Yeah absolutely. My group is willing to side with any of the poaching factions operating in the park. The only real issue for them is that they still don't understand just how big this whole situation is becoming lol. So any groups that do want to ally with them might have to approach them first. My group would also probably let their allies know of my nation's government which could lead to a fun extradition crisis for any poachers that do make it over the border.

Unit backstory: Founded in 2019, this loose band of poachers, mercenaries and misfits serve as irregular cavalry for the poachers. They find and kill large animals and assassinate rangers. They are known by locals by their use of horses, and the unit effectively finds its origins during the war of independence, where desperate measures enlisted the help of horse trainers during the war. About 73 men and women took up the call, and 23 men were eventually selected to serve in combat roles. Those responsible for the operation tried to look at the Rhodesian Grey’s Scouts, whose anti-guerilla operations and recce capabilities were surprisingly effective during the African Bush War in the 80s. Just when the horsemen would be used in combat, a ceasefire was signed, and the program rapidly lost funds.
In mid-2019, Captain Georges “Burnham” Roertens, the former commander of the 23 cavalrymen and figurehead of the experiment, looked at the difficult poaching situation in Zoungo National Park, Vernon Bluff. Knowing that the training that he and his men had received previously was based on the tactics perfected in Africa’s wild bush, Roertens was convinced that his men could play an important role in the fighting and poaching there. The Limburgian government, faced with serious financial decline and a surplus of military equipment from the independence war, proposed outfitting an expedition, and Roertens jumped to the idea. Of those that were mobilized in the war, Roertens managed to convince 13 to come with him. The financial gain that horse breeders and trainers once had in the Kingdom of the Netherlands had passed, and many felt that poaching was a legitimate alternative.

The government of the Free State started talks with the local German colonial government in Africa, and due to close cultural bounds that the Limburgians enjoyed with their Prussian brothers, an agreement was found, and Roertens’s mounted rifles were transported to what the horsemen now considered “The Frontier” – the German North-East African border with Vernon Bluff. Roerten’s thirteen quickly bought local horses. Strong, speedy steeds of the Arabian horse breed. To glorify his mission, and to poke fun at the Germans and their complicated imperial unit names, captain Roertens named his unit according to the old Prussian Jäger-Regimenter zu Pferde, and put his own spin on it.

Aside from horses beneath them, the men had old G3s and FALs on their backs, mostly to make themselves look like a mercenary group rather than a government-sanctioned poaching party, and, most importantly of all, the Limburgian volunteers had a good sense of what to do in their heads. They had been trained in guerilla warfare. Sharpshooting, psychological warfare and expert horsemanship had been marks of the famous Rhodesian Grey’s Scouts, and the Limburgians shamelessly copied these martial feats, whilst also injecting their own. Navigating, scouting and working with explosives were two skills that were valued highly during the independence war. Whether they will pay off in Zoungo Poaching War is not yet clear.

Commander: Captain Georges “Burnham” Roertens
Commander backstory: Roertens is a 46-year-old Limburgian military officer and a trophy hunter, nicknamed "Burnham" by his men after the famous American scout Frederick Russell Burnham. He hails from an upper-class family in Maastricht, and though some of his family is from Holland, he chose the Limburgian side due to his own opportunist tendencies. He spearheaded the development of a guerilla cavalry unit similar to the Rhodesian Grey’s Scouts, but the unit never saw action. In an effort to test out the cavalry that he had set up during the independence war, he volunteered to travel to Zoungu and poach the local wildlife, in an effort to raise money for his opportunistic self, and for the financially ruined Limburgian Free State.

Notes or anything to add: If one pays close attention to the buildup of the unit, one would find the absence of additional non-combatant support units. There is no support, as the bankrupt Limburgian state cannot afford to expand operations in Vernon Bluff. For one, the detection of a support unit could lead to international sanctions, and secondly the Limburgian state does not have the monetary funds to support additional troops in the area. Having said that, these “wannabe Grey’s Scouts” will have to survive in the African bush, with the only help that they will ever receive from their home country being the vaccine shots that they got when departing Europe.
