continued from...

After discussions took place between Lord President George Fenwick (of Munkchester) and President Emily Spencer (of Luciala), their two nations agreed to negotiate a deal in which any Lucialan slaves would be returned in exchange for the slaveowners being compensated.

But then the Lucialans refused to compensate the slaveowners for lost profits, saying:

Emily Spencer wrote:Any lost profits could hypothetically cover an entire lifetime of labor. It would be in the seven figures and would not be a fair price at any of your own markets. These are not people legally enslaved. We are willing to compensate those holding them for their losses.

And George Fenwick refused to accept that:

George Fenwick wrote:Well, it's that or they stay enslaved. I don't make the rules.

And Spencer responded with:

Emily Spencer wrote:The rules? We are discussing people taken illegally. We are making inquiries into the welfare of our own citizens who do not belong with you but home with their families. You tell us smugly that they're better off but also that you don't know who you have. We are trying to settle this peacefully, not rush to war. You would charge anyone far less at any market in your country. Less than the initial sale price.

Fenwick hasn't responded yet. But he will in this thread, because now that's been moved here!

With:

— Hours of fun for the whole family!
— Quality roleplay that will most likely end in two dozen nations getting involved and starting a nuclear war!
— And more...

It's:

The Lucialans in Munkchester!

pretty neat, isn't it?

President Spencer,

Nobody has been taken illegally according to Munkcestrian law. And, as you are dealing with Munkchester and Munkcestrian citizens here, I must ask you to respect our laws. It will take some time to get a list of all Lucialans in Munkchester (which will have to include Lucialans who are not slaves), but I can assure you that we will find each and every one of them.

I would not charge anyone anything at any slave market. I personally disagree with the practice of slavery, but I am loyal to the Munkcestrian people and so will respect them and defend them and their rights. And if I was a slaver, I certainly wouldn't charge less than the initial sale price. That would just be bad business, especially when considering that Lucialans are a most wonderful, valuable, and hard-working people.

The Lucialan press was starting to go into a frenzy. So far, they entirely took the side of their own government. Slavers were monstrous to them. There had not yet been proof that a single Lucialan was enslaved in Munkchester but the press spoke as if dozens must be. Attention focused on Anna Flores and Alison Mason, two young women who had vanished traveling overseas after college because people feel most protective of attractive young women. President Spencer cut a heroic and, despite the Redemption States magazine, photogenic figure handing out instructions and pushing for more information.

President Spencer,

I would like to invite you to meet in Munkchester to discuss the matter further. If all goes well, and if it turns out there are Lucialans enslaved here in Munkchester, you'll be able to fly back home with them. And that would no doubt be considered a great victory for not just your country, but also you personally.

The invitation was accepted and it was with some trepidation that Spencer found herself on a plane to Munckestria. She tried to remind herself that the magazine that had discussed her as a slave was not Munckestrian, although she was sure they had read it. While he had started off hostile, Fenwick was being quite reasonable now.

Upon hearing that President Spencer had accepted the invitation and was on her way to Munkchester, George Fenwick took his phone out of his pocket and called his son, George Fenwick II.

"Hello," he said.

"Hey," said George Fenwick II.

"Is for horses," said George Fenwick.

"Do you really have to be such a fucking boome-"

"Language!"

"yes dad sorry dad."

"Anyway, I have invited President Spencer to Munkchester for a meeting to discuss the Lucialans allegedly enslaved by Munkcestrians. Only there's one problem - I won't be there. So you'll have to go. You're the best fit for the job, what with you filling in for me a few months back after some anti-slavery radical tried to kill your dear old dad!"

"Yes okay alright I'll do it. Don't know why you had to mention the assassination stuff, though."

"Do what you do best," said the elder Fenwick. The ;) could be heard over the phone.

George Fenwick II was, of course, already informed about the situation.

But he made sure to head to his father's office to talk with everyone and get updated and advised just in case. He had a few hours to prepare and get everything ready.

It was only a few hours later that the Lucialan Executive Jet landed in the Munkcestrian Republic. President Spencer was accompanied by her three top aides only. They waited as she led the way out.

A band played the Lucialan national anthem as President Spencer was escorted to a waiting car, ready to take her to the Robert Bell Conference Centre. There, in a conference room overlooking the river and Munkchester's many busy, impressive shipyards, the Lucialan president would negotiate with George Fenwick II.

Who, meanwhile, was getting in a helicopter to take him from his palace to the meeting.
