Are you a member of Ajax and want to participate in a character-driven story full of drama, political intrigue, and bears trying to eat your feet? Then you're in luck: a character-driven story full of drama, political intrigue, and bears trying to eat your feet is about to begin called Indomitable. The story is based around a team of academics and researchers from around the region who take part in a doomed scholarly expedition into the mountains of Cynereth, only to face a nightmarish ordeal of survival in an inhospitable and hostile wilderness. If you're looking for a cool and relaxed-pace story to jump into this summer, Indomitable may be your cup of tea! We'll be using this thread as both a sign-up thread for character applications, and as a discussion thread once the story kicks off proper in a couple of days. Feel free to ask questions here, communicate with other region members joining up, and spitball different ideas that you may want to see incorporated. Some important information has been provided already for you here in this thread, and more will be coming in the days and weeks to come. A.) Brief Synopsis

In an unusual display of openness, the Imperial See in Laeleath has given permission to the Sydra Academy of Anthropological Studies (SAAS), a prominent academic think-tank in Raeda Sathalis to host an international team of archaeologists, scholars, and other researchers on a two-week expedition to the Caemden Ruins, an archaeological excavation deep in the rugged Cailor Mountains of western Cynereth. En route to their destination however, the expedition encounters disaster when their plane is shot down by a terrorist cell seeking to bring international attention to their growing rebellion.

The survivors of the expedition must band together in the remote, hostile wilderness to survive, braving dangerous wildlife, inhospitable surroundings and militant foes of varying ideologies looking to prevent them from reaching salvation.

B.) Background of the Storyline

Indomitable takes place in the "present-day", roughly around July 2019 CE by the Cynerethic calendar. The story will stretch out over a 60-90 day window, and will range in scope from the story of the survivors of the plane crash trekking through the hostile wilderness to the political drama unfolding elsewhere regarding the fate of the doomed expedition, and the growing consternation from regional leaders over the apparent unwillingness of the Concordance government in Laeleath to provide information on the potential for survivors.

I.) The Macro-Setting
The majority of the story's action and exposition will take place in the mountainous terrain of the Concordance of Cynereth, a despotic and autocratic theocracy that is currently embroiled in suppressing a long-simmering insurrection in its southernmost provinces, Caenara and Illewei. Long considered a quasi-hermit kingdom and repressive state, the Cynerethic government has begun the process of slowly liberalizing a staunchly-conservative political hierarchy in an effort to better integrate the Concordance into its regional economic marketplace. Despite these small overtures however, the Concordance remains a highly-regimented, fiercely strict and xenophobic society where academic curiosity takes a back seat to the sanctity of the national religion and philosophy, Anaryssia. The archaeological site chosen for the expedition was selected in large part due to its suspected connection with the religion's founding matriarchs in the 10th Century CE.

II.) The Micro-Setting
Excepting entries that may take place in the political courts of participating nations (i.e. diplomatic posts regarding the recovery of foreign nationals), the vast majority of the physical storyline will be taking place in the Cailor Mountains, a subsection of the larger Cauzen Range that serves as the geographical border and bulwark for much of western Cynereth. Analogous to a cross between the rugged Andes of South America and the Urals of Eurasia, the Cailor Mountains range from rugged, rocky outcroppings overlooking densely-packed evergreen forests and uncharted wilderness. Vastly underdeveloped and without much in the way of natural resources, the barren mountain peaks provide little in the way of means of survival. Because of their inaccessibility and the scarcity of resources, little development exists for hundreds of square miles in the Cailor Mountains, making it both a morbid place to be marooned... and an excellent place to hide for militants looking to strike out at the government.

Through happenstance, the survivors begin their odyssey from the crash site on near the southern summit on the Krenzu Cwm of Rith Molga, one of the highest mountains in the Cailor Mountains and one of the highest overall in all of Cynereth. At over 7,300 meters in altitude, the high crash site on the Cwm presents dueling problems of low oxygen and exposure to the elements. Even in the middle of summer, temperatures above 7,000 meters can reach into the single digits Celsius. The survivors will be forced to navigate the treacherous, icy Setze Face down to the Kruztuk River Valley and the Tehu Forest in order to escape their ensnarement in the high peaks of western Cynereth.

III.) The Themes
Indomitable is a survival story, primarily; a survival story generated through political intrigue. A suspense-thriller by concept, the story will be an endurance test for the characters involved - some of whom will not survive to find salvation out of the mountains. In addition to hostile humans looking to capture and/or murder the crash survivors, the rugged and inhospitable mountains will provide their own challenges in the form of altitude sickness, exposure, dangerous wildlife and starvation. The moxie of each individual character will be challenged, leading some to become heroic in the support of the larger team while others become villainous cowards looking to escape. All the while, the survivors of the doomed expedition must come to grips with dueling mysteries that unfold over the course of the story: Why were they shot down? And why is no one coming to their rescue?

C.) Summary of the Storyline

The story will be moving at a very relaxed pace: participants shouldn't feel obliged to have to make long and detailed story entries every single day. We'll be taking our time to make this story a great one: to that end, it should be stressed that not every character that participates in the story will be surviving to the very end: some will perish in the initial plane crash, and some will perish on the long journey back to civilization. The idea behind the story is to tell a great story, and so the author behind Cynereth will be coordinating with individual members in the writing process to create some epic twists and turns along the way.

The primary storyline, at least in terms of the main plot, will center around two competing areas: the story of the survivors of the plane crash and their attempt to escape from the mountains, and the story surrounding Cynereth's diplomatic response to the terrorist attack (their attempt at a cover-up and their seeming unwillingness to engage with the countries who sent delegations to the doomed expedition). So while the story will largely focus on the trials of the crash survivors, a good bit of political drama and intrigue will also be involved. This is not a war story per se, but there will be fight scenes scattered throughout, so this would be an important point to keep in mind for those thinking about joining.

While the main plot is advancing, it is important to note that individual members participating in this story will have a certain degree of autonomy when it comes to telling side stories with their characters. Whether this involves interactions with other characters in the context of the larger plot, or storylines involving participating characters that tie into other stories or the member-nation's mythology, participants in this story will be given some latitude in crafting their own unique contributions to the plot. The goal is for people to not only tell a great story here, but to have fun doing it!

D.) Rules for Participation

Most of the rules for the story are pretty straightforward, and only need a cursory mention here. We obviously don't want to post any content that violates the site's terms of use, so please be cognizant of posting offensive material that could cause any problems. This story will certainly incorporate adult themes, depictions of violence and coarse language, but we want to self-moderate our content on some level so that moderation doesn't have to moderate it for us. As per usual, please don't take control of other peoples' characters without their explicit permission, etc. etc. All very standard stuff.

The big thing that needs to be addressed here is the plot: there's some autonomy for each writer participating to craft their own sub-stories, but there IS a primary plot that the story will be following, and the writer behind Cynereth - aka me - will be using submissions to help move that plot line along. It is extremely important that participating members in the story keep me in the loop as to what they're planning to do as it pertains to any side stories. I want to be as accommodating as possible to allow for maximum creative flexibility, but I also don't want to be forced to handle crazy side stories that become part of my national canon that give me a headache down the line. If you're participating with us, please dialogue with me and keep me in the loop on what you'd like to do; we'll be using this thread to discuss story ideas, but you can also reach me via telegram or through the Ajax regional Discord server.

In order to participate in this story, you must be a member of the region of Ajax. Apologies to those who are outside the region and wish to participate: I would however heartily suggest considering Ajax as a potential home for your writing endeavors here at NationStates. Any nation within the region is welcome to participate in this story, no matter how big they are or when they were accepted into the region. You are allowed up to THREE main, named characters on the expedition proper: you can have as many people involved as you want in diplomatic posts set in your own nation, and you can have up to ten support characters on the flight - be mindful though that any support characters that accompany your main characters will not survive the crash, so be cognizant of this when deciding on making your Minister of State a support character.

One last thing: as annoying as it may be, I want to try and keep as much information collected as possible here in this thread in order to provide a resource for participants looking to write with us. I'll collect each application and create a 'roster' post that gives everyone easy access to the background of characters in the story to help the writing process go a little easier.

Having found a passion for history in secondary school, Tania quickly became one of Cynerethic Academia's young standout-scholars, having won a prestigious fellowship at Sydra prior to becoming a tenured professor there.

Briefly describe your character - who they are and where they're from: A competent constable in the Bataan Garrison, Rol's appointment to the position of Deputy Chief of Special Operations was seen by many as a political appointment, if not one signifying some shady backroom dealing. The respected officer has neither the temperament nor the disposition of a conventional Deputy Chief of SpecOps, and was certainly not prepared for such a role during his schooling in Ramath.

Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Even-keeled, polite and charming to the last, Rol Riya is the definition of a genuinely good guy, at least on the surface. He is on the trip not as an academic, but as the official government liaison through the national constabulary, in charge as much of keeping the expedition safe as he is making sure they don't break any laws while on the ground at the archaeological excavation.

She took to learning more about the faiths practiced around the world with keen interest on how they compare to her own, alongside finding an ease in learning the martial arts associated with the groups, a trait aiding in earning her title of Nakkha Uhlam. Not desensitized to brutality, or the need for it, she’s happy to be intimidating, and doesn’t plan to stop.

As such, he’s far more timid than usual, having gone on this job to try and distract himself from the weight of his own loneliness, yet blaming his own choice to push himself into the craft as the determinant for his failed marriage. While not quiet, Sri is certainly reserved, and will often fixate on work rather than brood in his own thoughts.

She took to learning more about the faiths practiced around the world with keen interest on how they compare to her own, alongside finding an ease in learning the martial arts associated with the groups, a trait aiding in earning her title of Nakkha Uhlam. Not desensitized to brutality, or the need for it, she’s happy to be intimidating, and doesn’t plan to stop.

She’s leaving the country for one of the first times in a while, and took upon the trip to impose not only her wisdom with religion, but to simply relax, and perhaps intimidate a few researchers along the way if it proves entertaining enough. There's a rumor that she might be a hired assassin, but she laughs it off constantly, citing that she's a monk, and what kind of monk would kill for profit?

So it's important to note that we won't be jumping straight into the actual expedition in the IC thread: this is by design, so that people have plenty of time to get everything in order for when they participate. Several people have expressed interest in joining the story, but need some extra time to get ready, so we'll be moving at a very relaxed pace to give everyone a chance to join in that wants to.

Having said that, this thread is now considered OPEN, so anyone that's already signed up to join the story is free to post their opening posts in response to the missive that the Concordance of Cynereth sent out at the end of our opening post. I'll be making an additional post in the next week or so to introduce the third main character that I'll be using in the story. Feel free to consider the letter in my opening post to be canon, and you may use it to respond with your characters in their respective home countries.

He got a job at his alma mater, where he garnered respect on account of his historical prowess and priestly title. He lives a strictly regimented life of prayer, reading (scientific, historical and religious texts), research and fasting.

A couple of different posts are either complete or are nearing completion for the thread and will be coming up shortly. Several different people have been working on solo posts and collaborative efforts with others, so there will be some more content coming in the next few days.

The big thing that I wanted to mention is that we'll be trying to organize a collaborative post with everyone participating in the thread in the next few weeks. I'll be individually telegramming the link to an open source doc where individual characters can get the spotlight and get prepped for the story to really kick off. Since most everyone involved is on the Ajax Discord server, we'll be using that as a base to plot out the storyline as well.

16.) Briefly describe your character - who they are and where they're from: Atiq was born and raised in the far reaches of Kaayhltaa Tlag, where few but other Nunaaqqinimmiut can hash out a life. After spending her first 20 years trapping seals and collecting cloudberries, she traveled all the way to the bustling city of Kuyeidi to get a college education. She chafed under life in the city, retreating to the country after finishing her undergrad to work as a park ranger -- when presented with an opportunity to earn a Ph. D near her home studying wildlife conservation, she jumped at the opportunity, and has taught the subject in the field ever since.

Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Often perceived as aloof and remote to those just meeting her, Atiq's personality reflects the stark and isolated environment she's made her home. While she's not quick to make friends, though, she's very quick to turn friends into good friends, sometimes downright charming around people she trusts. Studying the wildlife of ruins a continent away is admittedly far removed from her normal workload, but she's got an insatiable curiosity and couldn't resist the opportunity when the university presented it to her.

16.) Briefly describe your character - who they are and where they're from: Dorje was born in a small lemon farm in 1966 in the rural southwest of the Jheng SPR. While in school, Dorje was noted by his teachers for his keen interest in history and natural science, and spent almost all of his boyhood as a member of the Young Pioneers, a sort of political youth scout group. When he was 16 he voluntarily began his 4 year conscription term early, being stationed at a garrison in the capital as a cook. At 18 he received membership in the Jheng Communist Party and began studying anthropology at the University of Kalapa, where he remains to this day.

Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Like many of his generation, who grew up during and in the immediate aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, Dorje is a reserved and taciturn man, rarely speaking and choosing his words carefully when he does. When the university received a larger-than-expected grant from the ministry of education for field research, Dorje used his sway to secure funds for his expedition to Cynareth, far away from the strict routines of the university and the paranoiac surveillance of Party membership.

Briefly describe your character - who they are and where they're from: Jorge is a veritable renaissance man within the human sciences, holding degrees in cultural anthropology, linguistics, history, and comparative religion, specializing in Ottonian religious history and pre-historic Ottonian peoples. He is a member of the politically-connected Filius family, although he is only a distant cousin of the more prominent members of the family, although the ties do seem to help get funding for his organization. Filius is also a member of the Eonese people of Ottonia, and he's an enthusiastic Ottonian nationalist.
17.) Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Jorge's academic interests are real enough, but he is also an agent of the Ottonian government. He is part of a team being dispatched to survey the area of southern Cynereth, to prepare at least a basic report on its geography and its people for the benefit of the Ottonian Federal Defense Service. Filius is, on top of his academic accomplishments, a trained covert operative, focused on his mission. Although he presents a jovial facade, there is a ruthlessness about him that makes him an effective, if somewhat frightening team leader. He's also very aware of the privileges of his position, and there's a certain unthinking sense of superiority to him.

Donal actually enlisted in the Federal Guard after his undergraduate degree for four years before beginning his graduate studies.

Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Like other members of the Ottonian Heritage Institute, Donal is employed by the federal government to survey and prepare intelligence reports on the southern regions of Cynereth for the benefit of Ottonian national security. His academic pursuits are not a fabrication: he really is a graduate student, but he is also putting his considerable fitness and observational skills to good use for his country. He's young enough that the real danger of what he's doing hasn't quite sunk in yet, so it remains to be seen how he'll handle real adversity. In a vacuum, he's outgoing and personable, and certainly not averse to having a good time.

Briefly describe your character - who they are and where they're from: Clara is from Innusburg, is Eonese by birth and is a life-long history enthusiast (and, to a lesser extent, Ottonian nationalist). From a middle-class family, and did well in school from the beginning. Served in the OFDS Army reserve while in school, before getting her doctorate in Corvik and being hired by the OHI. Clara has worked with Filius for a while, and though she resents having to work for him and for the federal government, she accepts it as a necessary evil to securing funding for their studies and research.
17.) Briefly describe your character - their personality, and their motivations for coming on the trip: Clara is even-keeled, prone to bouts of irritability. She doesn't care for her expeditions' ulterior motive, although she is also employed by the federal government on an ad hoc basis. She is much more interested in the expedition's academic aims, but accepts what she needs to do to continue getting funding. Clara is inquisitive and very much an academic at heart, even if she's a little more physically active than many other examples of the profession.

Indomitable Thread Update — Wednesday, 30^th October, 2019

The roster of participating nations has been updated to reflect all the entries. The characters from New Kvenland, Communist Xomaniax and Allamunnic States are now added, so everyone should be up to date.

A collaborative roleplay for all participating members of the story is in the works. Keep a check on the regional DIscord server for Ajax for discussion. We'll be working on it for the next little while, so there's plenty of time to join in the discussion and participate - it'll be a great "jumping off" point for people to get into the story for those that haven't posted yet.
