INTRODUCTION :: GALAXY :: LATEST REPORT :: GALACTIC REPORTS

Image
Carl Sagan once wrote ''...Your own life, or your band’s, or even your species’ might be owed to a restless few—drawn, by a craving they can hardly articulate or understand, to undiscovered lands and new worlds.'' We've long been fascinated with the ideas of alien life - their societies and culture, their governments, and their history. What do these far and unknown civilisations of old and new do? Do they debate philosophy like that of the Greeks? Wage grand campaigns on a scale that would make Rome tremble? Create large and expansive federations of inter-diplomacy on a scale unseen in our time?

Welcome to GALNET.

As a community of roleplayers, we have long danced across a cosmic stage of our making - occasionally together, and occasionally alone. The stories we tell are often unique, and distinct visions created by our own imagination of what we believe interstellar life may be. Yet, an aggregate of these stories into a central galactic repository has not been done to the satisfaction of everyone. In truth, it is a hard feat to manage. GALNET seeks to bring the community aspect back into the overall galactic narrative of the NSFT community. Inspired by the older State of the Galaxy projects (SOTG), GALNET'S role is less reliant on the need for an exclusive circle of editors, and instead relies on you, the RolePlayer. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who can best tell your story.

GALNET's approach will utilise two threads. GALNET's Galactic Report thread, and GALNET's Community News thread, which is where we are right now.

Image
GALNET's community thread will allow anyone in the NSFT community to write up news articles of the current events in their nations. The advantage of this allows the rest of the community to keep tabs on international affairs by scrolling and searching for related news articles. It also allows RolePlayers to express what they want people to know about their nations without the concern of it being funnelled or misrepresented by a process.

Format guidelines are lax for the Community thread, though articles should include what quadrant is being affected, and include (if applicable) at least a hyperlink to the relevant RPs the editor's article is covering. This allows other users to read RP threads and further get a grasp of galactic affairs, especially regarding the editor's nation. Beyond this, formatting is to the editor's taste, but as a reminder - NS' site rules still apply for content.

Image
Each month, I will take all of the news stories players have written and create a meta-narrative that represents each quadrant in a monthly 'Galactic Report'. The Galactic Report will serve as a summary of galactic affairs, and quadrant tension and always include not only hyperlinks to the community's articles, but also coverage of their stories. No-one will be excluded. This is why mentioning what quadrant is being affected in your articles is important, as it will allow me to more accurately summarise each quadrant's report. We will cover quadrants in the next section.

Image
The MilkyWay Galaxy, which is where the central part of the NSFT community and its events takes place, is immense. Sagan said it best, ''Billions upon billions of stars.'' There are also a lot of us, the RolePlayers, who lay claim to a few of these stars, but we are also spread out across vast areas of the galaxy. Within the community, the galaxy is generally accepted to be divided into four quadrants. An example map of the NSFT community (there are many maps), displays not only the quadrants but also the intricate storybuilding of a number of RolePlayers marked on it. The quadrants are as followed:

Alpha Quadrant (bottom left quadrant) is home to Sol, and often considered by the community to be NSFT's 'Old Money' region. Things here are generally quiet, and very old interstellar powers such as the Republic of Sunset exist within its realm. The region is dominated by gunboat diplomacy and trade between these powers.

Beta Quadrant (bottom right quadrant) is considered the 'New Money' region. Newer and more mercantile powers such as the Phoenix Domain often settle or can be found here vying for resources and trade that helps fuel the rest of the galaxy. While not as quiet as Alpha, the region is relatively stable.

Gamma Quadrant (top left quadrant) historically a literal manifestation of the phrase 'Here Be Dragons', Gamma has retained a troubling and eldritch history within the community. This region not only is prone to conflict but was also the center-piece to the rise and fall of a number of plagues, Lovecraftian horrors, and diabolical empires. It is also dominated by long held powerhouses such as the Galactic Republic of Alexzonya.

Delta Quadrant (top right quadrant) is widely a militant region prone to conflict like Gamma, though exhibiting less eldritch abominations historically until late. The region is often dominated by imperial powers such as the Huerdaen Star Empire, and seen as a sort of new frontier within the galaxy. Recently, however, the region has seen a revival in conflict and has been stealing Gamma's crown for creating Lovecraftian nightmares.

PAIX with significant gains; Polar MilTech announces new contract

Yesterday, when the PAIX (Peninsularischer AktienIndeX) closed down for the weekend, a historic goal achieved - the stock index went a total of 290 days without decrease, the first time in its history it has done so. Yesterday's total gains of over 2% can mainly be attributed to the Big Four branches of industry once again. Especially Polar Military Technology AC, the Federation's largest pure arms company, had reason to celebrate, as it secured a multi-trillion dollar contract with the Alexzonyan military over the purchase of the MIC-8 APC/IFV.

The MIC-8, already used by the Federal Defense Forces, is Polar MilTech's most prized vehicle. The news of the success and the testing report also disspelled long-lasting concerns by military experts over the effectiveness of its design in comparison to foreign technology, most importantly hovercraft. The success is seen as further proof that the Federation is on par with the galaxy in terms of military technology.

According to the report, the Alexzonyan military intends to use the vehicles ordered as transport and combat vehicles for their embarked "cavalry" units, which operate together with tank forces similar to the PGDF's doctrine. The MIC-8 especially impressed with its survivability, easily withstanding anti-tank missiles, explosives and cannon-fire no other entry in its category was able to. The test vehicles even took several hits from MBT main guns before finally being knocked out.

With the contract monetary value exceeding the 5 trillion Dollar mark - equal to about 4.5 trillion Principen - it is the largest single contract Polar MilTech has ever had. A total of 1.5 million vehicles are to be produced and delivered to the GRA in the span of 5 years. The company's head disspelled concerns by some that production capabilities of Polar factories would be fully occupied with the production: "With our new industrial grounds in the Nordostbassin opening next month, we will be able to fulfill all of our current contracts and still have space for other orders.", CPO Kessler told the press in a conference. The Nordostbassin is home to the largest construction site on Firis, of several large production facilities for all branches of industry: In addition to a new large military factory complex owned by Polar MilTech and M&C, the industrial sector will include scientific and production facilities for Rebell Material Sciences, a new complex run by Northern Pharma, a scientific lab by PenMed, and several more installations owned and used by various other companies.

Dornie News Network

Hello, this is Gracie Liang, and welcome to NDBC News's Foreign Desk. Tonight’s top stories:

Stocks Soar on Alexzonyan Contracts

In what is being hailed as a massive boon for various Dornalian firms, the Galactic Republic of Alexzonya has reportedly entered into agreements with the China North Industries Corporation,Tadanobu General Services Corporation as well as Ford Motor Company's Defense Division to engage in significant purchases of Dornalian military equipment. NDBC News was able to obtain copies of the contracts on request, and from what can be seen the contracts themselves are quite significant. For example, TGSC's contract to supply modified copies of the Zohan Mark IV main battle tank indicates that TGSC will supply the GRA with 1,800,000 units, to be spaced out among 90,000 units per quarter, of multiple variants of the tank.

The news has been welcomed by investors of all sorts. In particular, TGSC (as well as the stock of its partner/parent corporation Tyrol Industries) stock soared in recent days due to the revelation that the megacorporation to supply not only the Zohan Mark IV tank but also 2,000,000 units of the M3A1 Blaster, spread out amongst 100,000 units a quarter, and at least one other product from a division of Tyrol Industries--the M9 Shotgun--is undergoing testing with the GRA's forces. Additionally, Ford shareholders greeted news of licensed production of the M89X series of vehicles in the GRA with great enthusiasm, with some speculating that this may lead to further licensing and expansion for FMC--particularly the Ford Defense Division, which will produce the M89X series.

"This is a good day for everyone," CEO Tereza J. Tadanobu of TGSC said, speaking proudly in front of the Enfield plant, holding the first M3A1 Blaster to be sent to GRA hands like a proud mother with her newborn. "Because for us here at TGSC, it's not just about the money. It's about why the money's being spent--and right now, our new business partners in the GRA are facing some rather nasty gribblies." Holding up the blaster and giving it a gentle shake for emphasis, Tadanobu then said, with a smile and a defiant cry, "And I can guaran-damn-tee you this, my Alexzonyan brothers and sisters--the weapons we sell to you are going to make sure those gribblies will go away. Satisfaction guaranteed!"

The contracts come amidst continued Dornalian economic activity abroad, following on the heels of the newly commenced Evenstar Gate expansion to the Co Prosperity Sphere of Auman. Analysts note that it appears that even with the effects of the Karax Crisis and the rise of various militant factions, the Dornalian Republic's economic clout is looking fairly vibrant.

President Haggar Condemns the Welded, Promises Support to Anti-Welded Factions

And in other news, President Haggar's office, responding to recent events, has condemned the actions of the militant technomagical faction known as the "Welded". Speaking at a press conference outside the Ford Defense plant in Detroit, Michigan, the President left no doubt as to the Dornalian stance on the situation. Speaking in an impassioned, strident tone, the President had this to say:

"Let me make this absolutely clear, to all those who are listening. I have heard and read reports, about the Welded.

From what I can tell, I do not like the Welded.

I do not care for what they have done to innocent women and children.

I do not care for their ravenous, monstrous appetites.

What I do care for is taking every single one of these monstrosities and sending them back to whatever Hell they crawled out of.

Because if it is one thing I will not abide, it is rapacious technomagical assimilators who pose a threat to the galaxy.

Now I know what my detractors will say. The galaxy has plenty of challenges already. Karax/Golden Flower Syndrome, for instance. These detractors also say that the Dornalian state cannot afford to be the galaxy's policeman, and that the Welded are so far away. To that, I say whether we are meaning to be the galaxy's policeman is irrelevant. What is relevant is that we know here in Dornalia that a threat to the freedom and safety of one group of sapients--especially one which would enslave them and turn them into fuel for more technomagical horror--won't just stop with that group. They will not rest until all are under their thrall, and if they decide to come for Dornalia, they will come. All reports indicate they are rapacious enough and inscrutable enough for this to be not just a strong possibility, but a certainty.

Effective immediately, I pledge that the Dornalian state will continue to do its part to battle the threat of the Welded. Our allies know we do much already--much which cannot be said here. But I feel it is time to note that the Dornalian Republic will continue this crusade, until every Welded is stopped. As such, we will do much, and then some--with technomagical means, direct action, cybersecurity--any and all measures to fight the Welded will be undertaken.

Now, if you'll excuse me, the time for talking is over. I've got work to do."

Reports have indicated that the President is making good on his promise. Congress is set to approve a major increase in funding for defense and intelligence needs (including cybersecurity and Empowered Warfare). Additionally, unverified reports indicate that various members of the Dornalian Intelligence Community--most prominently, ERIS as well as the Postal Inspectors' Service--have begun increasing already busy dialogue with various foreign leaders as part of planning a response to the Welded crisis. More information will be forthcoming.
Thank you for watching the REAL NDBC news--New Dornalian Broadcasting Corporation news--not those jokers at National Dornalian Broadcasting Corporation. We now cut to commercial.

"New Dornalia, a living example of anomalous civilizations."-- Phoenix Conclave
"Your nation has always been ridiculous. But it's endearing."--Skaugra
"It's a magical place where chinese cowboys ply the star lanes to extract vast wealth from trade, where NORINCO isn't just an arms company, but an evil bond villain type conglomerate that hides in other nations. Where the apocalypse happened, and everyone went "huh, that's neat" and then got back to having catgirls and starships."-- Olimpiada
"...why am I space China, and I don't have actual magic animals, and you're space USA, and you do? This seems like a mistake." --Roania, during a discussion on wildlife.

Milestone legislation passed by parliament after plebiscite

Alpha Quadrant -- Togris, Liaso, Arret, CFP -- In a historical vote, seven years after the introduction of the CFP to the galaxy, parliament has passed the first ever Peninsularian AI law. The vote was preceded by a several hour long debate, building on the results of the recent plebiscite. The plebiscite conducted a few months prior resulted in a victory for pro-AI laws as well, as the legislation proposals A) and D) garnered a clear two/thirds majority. In the following final ballot, proposal D) came out on top and won. Parliament voted 69% for, 28% against the proposed legislation and 3% of members abstained. Now, the law has been made official.

The two years leading up to both of these votes were filled with debates and discussions about AI rights. As the voting results show, the initiative "KI sind auch Leute!" managed to persuade much of the public. The initiative, launched in 2314 NC (three years prior to the votes), advocated for at the very least certain types of AI to be fully recognized as persons and to be eligible for Peninsularian citizenship. The initiative consisted largely of younger politicians and law practicioners, though elements of the military and diplomatic services also were at the forefront of the campaign.

The new law, titled the "Bundesgesetz über die Rechte, Pflichten sowie die rechtliche Stellung von Künstlichen Intelligenzen", BGRPRSKI for short, largely accomodates a number of demands by pro-AI-rights groups, such as personhood for types of smart AI, as well as Article 37 BGRPRSKI, which allows for AI citizenship under certain conditions. In addition, the legal status of non-citizen smart AI has been elevated to that of other non-citizen persons.

The law also is integrated into the parliamentary decrees on the topic of the years before, in order to be able to fully cover the many additional regulations needed in case of citizen AI. According to several comments though, in a number of cases current Peninsularian law can be used as an analogue.
