Special Anti-Piracy Court Formed in Response to International Anti-Slavery Movement
URBS DOOMANUS- Earlier this afternoon, Magister Iudicialis* Servius Antonius Aruns and Magister Nuntiorum** Quintus Livius jointly announced the formation of a special court, whose purpose is to prosecute individuals suspected of piracy against Doomani-flagged vessels. The announcement comes in the wake of a growing trend of international state-sponsored piracy against the commerce of nations that permit slavery.
"As one of the few left on this Earth to allow its citizens the full, unalienable right to hold property, it is the duty of this government to preserve the peaceful, free commerce of the Doomani people in the face of barbarian tyranny. We must remain vigilant in the face of a growing threat of state-sponsored piracy; deterrence is more important now than ever, and the Special Anti-Piracy Court is one of the ways the Magisterium Iudicialis is contributing to our efforts to curb this threat,” said Livius at the press conference on the steps of the Basilca Iustitiae.
Magister Livius also announced that private security contractors currently in the service of Doomani shipping companies would be legally permitted to detain piracy suspects as temporary officers of the law pending their transport to Doomani soil to stand trial.
The newly announced head justice of the Special Anti-Piracy Court, Urban Praetor Marcus Cornelius Domitianus, was also present at the press conference. Praetor Domitian was selected for his own extensive experience with Imperial law pertaining to international commerce as well as the prosecution of foreigners. According to Domitianus, the court will try foreign nationals accused of attempting to abduct one or more slaves from their lawful owner in addition to those accused of piracy.
“Aiding and abetting the escape of a slave and piracy are both capital crimes under Imperial law,” Praetor Domitianus said at the press conference while taking questions from the press. “I fully intend to see that individuals guilty of these crimes, foreign or otherwise, are punished to the full extent of the Emperor’s law.”
Currently, there have yet to be any suspects arrested for piracy amidst the latest wave of international anti-slavery attacks.
