BREAKING NEWS: His Highness, King Wilbert XI has passed away!

March 12, 2019 | Gvardio de Monteto | 08:17

According to servants in the Castrio Castle, His Highness King Wilbert XI, who had been struggling with heart problems for years at that point, suffered a heart attack in the middle of the night, and passed away before anyone could notice. His body was discovered at 7:30 when a servant came in to wake him up in preparation for his duties. The possibility of assassination has not been excluded, according to the initial reports.

His Highness King Wilbert XI ascended to the throne in 1955 after radical elements attacked Castrio Castle and managed to kill Wilbert X. He started a crackdown on all radical elements shortly after his crowning, and thousands of terrorists were arrested during his reign, making Arideo much safer in the eyes of the citizenry. During the Insurgency of 1986-1987, Wilbert XI lead the Loyalist forces with skill and decisiveness, ending the unrest in just a couple of months and thoroughly crushing the radicals.

The funeral for the late King will be held on March 20, and Her Highness Crown Princess Amadelia II will ascend to the throne on March 18. When a La Gardisto reporter asked about her feelings on the death of her father, she only said "I have many things to say of my late father; Some great things, some things I would never say in his presence, but I have none I wish to be known publicly as of right now. I will state my full thoughts on the matter on the date of my coronation."

Crown Princess Amadelia II is the only child of Wilbert XI, and as such, the succession is expected to be smooth.

The Mad King is Dead!

Wilbert XI, King of Arideo, is dead! He passed during the night after a fatal heart attack, and although La Gardisto won't say it out loud, the authorities suspect assassination. Of course, if you've followed the news at all over the last few years, his death will come as no surprise; He had already been suffering heart problems for years, but refused heart surgery because "I live and die in the service of Arideo alone", which is another way of saying he was afraid the heart surgery would go wrong. No doubt the assassination motif may come into play later down the line, if the desire to take down Winst grows too tempting.

Wilbert XI, you may remember, was responsible for the brutal crackdown on dissenters both before and after the Second Civil War, which saw thousands of people locked up for no reason in the name of "national security", none of which have been released since because rather than admit he overreacted, Wilbert XI cracked down further on dissenters, throwing an extra couple of hundred people in jail for questioning him.

Amadelia II, the successor to the throne, has gone under the radar for most of her life (she surfaced for the Sunburn celebrations, which went poorly for everyone involved); Wether this is intentional or not is unclear. As such, if the Mad King's death will mean a radical overhaul in foreign policy or not remains to be seen, but more likely than not, Arideo will not change course in any significant manner.

According to our informants in GdM, opinions are mixed; Hardcore nationalists grieve the death of Wilbert XI, but how they feel about Amadelia II is unclear, whilst other groups we have been in contact with have not yet decided on a stance.

We will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

The Mad King is Dead Let Us Celebrate
March 13th, 2019

The enemy of all Republicans is finally dead. Wilbert XI has served as the figurehead of Monarchical Tyranny of decades and a great threat to the Republics of Lira. With his death, our Aridite brothers and sisters can finally achieve their long sought after goal that they have raised arms over countless times. It is time fellow Republicans to prepare for the revolution that will sweep across Lira soaking the fields in the blood of tyrannical monarchs and setting up a new age of Republican values. The continued oppression of the people cannot continue. Never has the time been so ripe for the coming revolution. The Wintonian government is in the hands of true Republicans, and ready to join our comrades in Achkadia in a war against those that would seek to destroy our proud traditions. The Jacobin spirit is alive after years of entropy and Wilbur’s death will serve as even greater tinder for the coming fire. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter as well as find helpful tips to ensure you can get around government censors. The revolution grows with your support.

Condolences and Censorship
Warezen offers regards to Arideo after death of King Wilbert the XI while silently ending official celebrations of Lavendel Day

King Wilbert the XI of Arideo is dead, and as thousands in the southern Liran nation mourn, Warezen plays smoke and mirrors. In a statement from the Directorate, the nation of Achkadia expressed its "deepest" condolences to the people of Arideo over the death of their monarch. "A truly trying time in the life of a nation" the memo goes on to state as it was released this morning to the press as Warezen continues its push for better relations with its southern neighbor. However, what the people of Lira have not yet forgotten is Achkadia itself used to have a monarch, though Warezen would rather that chapter in the nation's history fade away until its forgotten.

In a rare leaked memo from the Home Ministry today, the Directorate has issued quiet direction to all of its departments to stop official observation of Lavendel Day, a holiday as old as Achkadia itself. Lavendel Day traditionally was a time when Achkadian monarchs observed the first blossoming of the Lavender flowers surrounding the Residenz de Glöckner. But since the Achkadian Subjugation when King Klemens Glöckner was murdered by Lunderfrau agents occupying the capital, the holiday was rededicated in memorial to the Royal House of Glöckner, a celebration of the life and history of Achkadia under the fondly remembered monarchy. However, it seems that the Directorate found the people of Achkadia’s feelings towards the old Monarchy too fond, perhaps growing jealous their government took a back seat to a dead King in the people’s hearts. Since 2013 official celebrations of this holiday have lessened in their scale, until now just a month before the holiday, official observation of it has been scrapped.

While we can speculate to the motivation for such action, it is truly part of the ever encroaching scope and demand for reverence from the people for the military regime, there is little telling while such a staple in traditional Achkadian culture is being removed. More and more each year such aspects of Achkadian culture that tied its people back to the old way are being stripped, one of the many ways the Directorate employs its reach to suffocate free thought within the nation. While there are enough despotic monarchs in Lira, it seems the celebration of this one (long dead) monarch does more harm than good for a people who still struggle day-to-day under the brutal regime.

All of this being said of the Armed Republic, condolences to the people of Arideo at the passing of their monarch. While King Wilbert has been much criticized even in his dead, he is loved by his people. The circumstances of his death do not make this much easier as story of his possible assassination is beginning to spread, a troubling tale that could end up causing tension south of the Achkadian border…

Khunjulwa planted her palm on the back of the leg of the man in front of her, and a moment later, a space was made that she wriggled through. A similar pattern repeated itself until she was pressed up against the barricade, and she threw down the small wooden box she'd left the house with for just this moment. Hopping up atop it, her eyes appeared over the rounded steel rim separating the crowd from the military parade passing down the boulevard. Marching in uniform, rigid lock-step, the Impi formed a series of columns six abreast and a score deep. The girl's eyes popped as she watched the soldiers passing by, the vibrant, mis-matched dyes of different clans and company's dress uniforms, off set by the Imperial green of the Imperial Army at regular intervals was a cacophony of colours, as well as noise, with bands playing drums and pipes. It was all because a king somewhere had died, and the Emperor had called for a parade in his honour, but for Khunjulwa, it was an excuse to get out of school early and to enjoy the charity of drink-inspired benevolent Impi and Afada for an afternoon. Seeing soldiers was hardly exciting, but the dress uniforms were interesting, as were the big trucks and tanks, and the sense of occasion, with the thousands lining the Imperial Avenue cheering and hooting as the parade passed by, seemingly endless.

But in truth, it wasn't all that grand of an affair, only a few thousand soldiers taking part, and there was nothing left to see before the hour was out. Still, she managed to finagle a bag of ripe Marula plums from an Afada shaman giving alms at a street corner on her way home. She made sure to completely devour one and wipe her face clear before she took the rest home, so that she could share and still get another for herself. All in all, it was a good day for the children of Insikaphezulu. The death of a king half a world away was as good an excuse as any to throw a parade, and despite the sombre intent, for most of the citizens of the city, from the sweeping shanty towns all the way up to the gates of the Opal Palace, it was used more as an excuse to party, to shirk work, and to fraternise outside of the usual circles.

The emperor, at least, took the time to hand write a personal letter to the Aridean government, to be delivered to the heir awaiting coronation. A fairly predictable slew of condolences and sympathies offered, with the addition of a gift of a solid gold lion figurine. The purpose of which was quite unclear, but along it went to distant Lira. Gestures were made, and Insikaphezulu marched on.

Kiteahui Foreign Directorate makes rare appearance

Foreign Director Ludo Marpaung speaks to press in Awanui

- The State of Kiteahu is often called the Hermit Nation for it's near silence to international affairs, but this state of affairs may be changing quickly. Since his appointment eight months ago by the State Marshal Huatare Herewini, Director Marpaung has overseen the most active Foreign Directorate in decades, and has also drawn interest as the only Director from the Susila minority in the interior of Kiteahu. The increase in activity seems to be part of the wider "realignment" of policies under Marshal Herewini who is pushing the nation to become more participatory in global politics.

Eyes in Meniti were on Kiteahu this morning when it was indicated that the State intended to release a statement on the passing of Wilbert XI, the first death of a sitting head of state since the introduction of Kiteahu's "realignment" strategy. At 10:30AM this morning in Awanui, the Foreign Director sat for a press briefing and read aloud the statement that had been conveyed to the Aridite government, and took a handful of questions from the press. Independent observers noted that only Kiteahu's own state press reporters were present at the time, so no questions were posed on the silence of the Foreign Directorate to recent religious oppression in Achkadia.

Beyond the official response, the government appears to be utilizing the death for their own internal uses. State Media over the past few days has spent a majority of it's debate and discussion time theorizing about the assassination of King Wilbert, on how a war between Arideo and Winst would possibly go, and on how fortunate Kiteahu was to be insulated from the radical "anarcho-liberalism" that was surrounding the discussion of King Wilbert XI's life and death.

Foreign Directorate Statement

Directed Towards Kingdom of Arideo (in summa) | Public Accessibility Unrestricted | Subject Condolences on the subject of the passing of King Wilbert XI
Authorization Foreign Director Ludo Marpaung | Date Seventh April, 2019

The State of Kiteahu and it's people offer their unconditional and absolute condolences for the great loss suffered by your nation, with the passing of King Wilbert XI. This incalculable loss for the moral world will be felt in ripples across the globe, but with primacy in the Kingdom of Arideo itself. It will never be satisfactory, but our nation can do no more than offer unconditionally the embrace of international love and coexistence, and join in the mourning for a great man who has served his last, and now must move on.

The Kiteahui people shared with Wilbert XI a great many values, and from afar we could do nothing but approve of, and draw vindication from, the great successes of his Majesty in ensuring the security and stability of the Aridite nation. All nations and peoples must take their own path towards the bright future, and while at times divergences must be made to account for the individual needs of a people, Kiteahu has found comfort in the companionship of the peoples who occupy and trek the parallel paths towards the common goals of stability, prosperity, and happiness.

Eighty million voices call out their best wishes for her Highness, Amadelia II, in the assumption of the reins of ultimate responsibility. Our wishes that her Highness not be shaken from the path she is set on, that the Aridite people may flourish under caring and vigilant watch, that Arideo may prosper eternal, are universal and unconditional.

Haere i te ara o te kororia.
E kore te whakapono e pakaru.

The Daily Digest

Wilbert XI, King of Arideo, Passes

Written by Ruadh McLachlan

Wilbert XI, King of Arideo, passed during the night in the small hours of yesterday morning. A controversial monarch of the southern Liran monarchy, Wilbert had the longest reign in the country's history, ruling for almost 64 years, having ascended to the throne at the early age of 15. His reign is likely to be remembered primarily for the oppressive anti-revolutionary actions undertaken to maintain the autocratic state of rule in Arideo leading up to, during, and following the second Aridean Civil War in the mid 1980s. The Aridean government has declared a rapid funeral, coming on March 20th, which likely means that the coronation of Crown Princess Amadelia will be brought forwards rapidly in order to maintain stability of government in the trying political and diplomatic climate of Lira. Some elements of the local press have put forward the possibility of foreign-backed assassination rather than a death by natural causes, and there are concerns that the death of the king could further exacerbate tensions in western Lira, and march the continent one step closer to another great war.

For more details on the life of Wilbert XI, see the obituaries section, pg 29.

SPECIAL REPORT
By: Torinaka Ayaka, second writer of the Imperial Informer

Wilbert XI, King of Arideo, a legendary figure among his people, has passed away. He was well regarded by the Kotonashi, both our current and his predecessor. Kotonashi Kazuto Kurohiun II has officially declared a day of mourning for the loss of such an iconic leader, who while imperfect, was a strong proponent of the enlightened path of monarchism. The loss of such a leader though has led to whispers of assassination and black-ops from foreign powers, while not confirmed the suspicion remains. It is also said that our beloved Kotonashi will attend Crown Princess Amadelia's coronation personally. In these trying times it is important to show solidarity with our friends.
