11:30am High above Camp Kroll, a Kunkengan military installation hidden in the valley of the Karpass mountains

A pair of jet fighters screech across a bright blue sky. Pulling a tight turn they disappear behind a colossal mountain range.

Inside a small open-air tent, a Kunkengan armor specialist and an army engineer sit beside a radio and listen to the news

"You're listening to Radio One, Radio Kunkenga. It's 11:30. Recent tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point. The ongoing military conflict between the Ottoman and Iranian armies has been inflamed by an intense verbal dispute between the nation's leaders. In light of these events the Kunkengan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has offered to send a diplomatic attaché from the Brakkawian Embassy to mediate the conflict. There has yet to be a response from either government. In other news, the Kunkengan Fourth Fleet..."

A tank rolls by the tent, the noise of its engine and tracks washing over the broadcast. Following the tank in a light job are six tightly regimented infantry men.

As the armor specialist turns to look at the passing tank, the engineer jumps towards the radio set and flicks the dial quickly. The opening chords of Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone" begin to blare as the distracted armor specialist snaps his head back to radio.

The armor specialist slaps at the engineer's hand, "I was listening to that you swine!"

The engineer swiftly pulls his hand back, just missing the armor specialist's swat, "What's the point, it's not like we're going to be sent there anytime soon. You of all people should know, our military is nothing more than a oversized civil defense force. Let's be real, the last Kunkengan that was deployed in active combat is probably old enough to be your grandfather."

"Well I value staying informed" responds the armor specialist, pulling the radio set towards him and turning the dial back to the news station.

"We're two days away from starting Soledad, you're going to be stuck in the forest for two weeks doing exercises, what's so important about missing one day's worth of news?"

Still looking at the radio and fidgeting with the dial, the armor specialist quietly responds, "If you wasn't to listen to music all day, you can go to the airman's club"

11:30am above the Persian Gulf

A squad of three Kunkengan jet fighters fly above a dense flotilla of massive warships. The Kunkengan Fourth Fleet is in movement.

"Roadkill, requesting check on Charlie, how copy squad leader?"

"Copy Roadkill, this is squad leader. Current time reads 1130 hours, Charlie stands at 2 plus zero, 1330. I know this area is kind of hot, but this is just a standard patrol we'll be back in no time at all"

"Copy squad leader."

The fighter on the far left of the formation begins to stray away.

"Bobcat, you're falling out of formation check yourself rookie."

"Copy squad leader, sorry"


8:00am the next day, aboard the carrier KNS Colonial stationed off the shore of New Sistonia

Deep inside the hold of the Colonial, a group of pilots sit in front of a black, transparent board. Standing at attention in front of the group is a tall man with a surgical airman's haircut. Colonial's KAC flight leader.

With the flip of a switch, the board displays a detailed flight map of the Persian Gulf with borders and cities colored in neon green

"Alright boys, see that little piece of land there"

The flight leader smacks a pointed stick with a miniature plane on its end across the board

"That's Iran. If any of you have been listening to the news you may know that they're involved in a pretty intense spat with the Turks."

The flight leader quickly smacks the stick upwards at the borders of the Ottoman Sultanate

"Now, the Iranians were aware of the Fourth Fleets presence in the area and we've made it clear to them that our mission in the Gulf is solely for escort of commercial ships and monitoring of military build up."

The flight leader whips the stick under his arm and begins pacing the length of the board.

"But in light or recent events with the 2nd Flight Group, and the actions of one Captain Kurtz "Bobcat" Schlueter, our mission has changed."


12:30pm the previous day, above the Persian Gulf, 700 miles off the shore of Iran"

"Roadkill reporting, patrol check green. All clear on this end."

"Bobcat reporting, patrol check green. We're good here too"

"Alright, lets pull back boys. Air boss this is squad leader, 2nd Flight Group is heading back to the boat, patrol check green on all ends."

Separated about 100 miles apart, the three fighters of the 2nd Flight Group begin making their way back towards a central regrouping point. However, midway through their flight, an anomaly is detected by one of the pilots.

"Squad leader, uhhhh. I think I've got someone on my six possible bogey, can't confirm yet.

"Copy Bobcat, do not engage. Roadkill is at your four to provide back up."

"Roadkill, copy that squad leader on my way."

"Squad leader can confirm, aircraft is an Iranian attack fighter, switching flight path. What the hell is this guy doing, I thought the Iranians knew about our patrols!"

Roadkill, can confirm Iranian FA-20. Jesus that thing is fast!"


8:10am the next day, aboard the carrier KNS Colonial stationed off the shore of New Sistonia

"Now, as yo may know the mission of the 2nd Flight Group yesterday was a simple patrol mission of the eastern expanse of the Gulf. We've done this type of mission dozens of times without a problem. But we didn't account for the poor piloting of Captain Schlueter that day. While Captain Rasvett and Major Udall had conducted their flight plans in accordance with the briefing, Captain Schlueter took a 130 mile detour into Iranian airspace. On his way back to the rendezvous point he was trailed by an Iranian pilot that was scrambled from a nearby base."

The flight leader slapped his stick along the southern border of Iran and began trailing Bobcat's path.


12:37pm the previous day, above the Persian Gulf, 200 miles off the shore of Iran"

"Smooth change Bobcat, break right I'm on his six."

"Rodger Roadkill, breaking right."

Bobcat's fighter screams to the right as the Iranian fighter slowly turns to follow.

"Alright, trail him Roadkill. Bobcat lead him to the carrier group, he's either gonna break off or follow us to the ships."

"Rodger."

The Iranian fighter flies stoically, sandwiched between Roadkill to his rear and Bobcat to his front.

"Holy hell, holy hell..."

"Bobcat, take it easy. Roadkill pick up speed."

"Copy squad leader."


8:13am the next day, aboard the carrier KNS Colonial stationed off the shore of New Sistonia

"So about here. The Captain Rasvett picks up speed to push the Iranian fighter along. But as he did so, it provided the Iranian the perfect position to break backwards and get behind both Rasvett and Schlueter."


12:38pm the previous day, above the Persian Gulf, 110 miles off the shore of Iran"

"Shit!, he's on our six!"

"For fucks sake, squad leader the fucker broke. He's behind us both, I'm pulling right."

"Stop! God damnit don't move, hold position!"

"Shit! Shit!"


8:13am the next day, aboard the carrier KNS Colonial stationed off the shore of New Sistonia

"Now, we don't yet know what happened here exactly. All we know is that Captain Rasvett ignored his squad leader's instruction and pulled right, leaving Captain Schlueter by himself. It was in this situation that Captain Schlueter dispensed his flares and broke heavily, colliding with the Iranian fighter and killing them both."

The flight leader pulls the stick away from the board, about 100 miles away from the Iranian coast.
