Betharan Palace
Fineberg, New Edom

The King-Emperor stood looking down over an avenue flanked by neatly trimmed shrubs in the shape of pyramids. The path was made up of neat paving stones in the shape of diamonds. This path was part of a cruciform that led to a fountain celebrating the triumph of his ancestor, David the Landstrider, a fierce figure on horseback wearing 16th Century armor, his sword brandished high.

His valet, Chief Quartermaster’s Mate Maroth, skillfully finished brushing any last bits of lint or dust from the King-Emperor’s shoulders. The Monarch wore a parade dress uniform that was standard for officers doing duty in the capital, of navy blue with his two rows of ribbons and the epaulets signifying his rank. While this was happening, his principal secretary, Post Captain Hadoram Peleg, a man of rough features whose face was speckled with small scars from burning fragments, was reading him the news of the day and a summary of state matters. Like the King-Emperor, the secretary was in uniform.

Elijah nodded to them and they began to leave the room. As they did, Mara entered, yawning and quite naked, her raven hair tumbling down her smooth muscled back, padding on bare feet past the three men, svelte hips swaying, followed by a slim Elwe maid and the pattering paws of her little black Pommeranian. Captain Peleg and the valet both bowed.

“Good morning, honey,” said Mara sleepily. “What’s going on, why are you up so early?”

“I’m going to receive reports regarding the security of the city and review the overall situation,” Elijah replied. She approached him and put her arms around his neck and leaned in for comfort, and with evident reluctance he put his arms around her and stroked her back. “And I do not wish to delay this at all.”

“Oh poop, there’s always time for a hug, mighty Griffon,” she chided, reaching up to stroke his jawline. “You know what, I had this dream, and I thought it would be really cool if we fixed all this by inviting everyone to take part in the investigation of what happened. I can totally see it,” she let him go after giving him a kiss on the cheek and moving over to a table where she poured herself a glass of water from a carafe. The Queen-Empress moved with a kind of supple athletic grace, her body a mix of voluptuously curved and tautly exercised. “I can see that jerk Misabel conniving the whole thing just to get a bigger budget and more power. I can see Weber just reacting like a total meathead. I mean I like him, Perrin loved him, so he’s loyal and all that, but I can see those two looking for an excuse. We shouldn’t have soldiers acting as police, it’s a mess, right?”

“My dear, that would not be acceptable. These are not the days of the 2nd Civil War when we could barely govern the country. In fact, what you do need to do is put some clothes on and talk to the rest of the family, keep them calm and make sure they all perform their duties acceptably. Prince Enoch will be on hand to advise you.” Elijah replied. He picked up his service cap and tucked it under his arm.

“To mind me, you mean,” Mara said with a grimace. “And I don’t want to put any clothes on today. I want to work in the garden and pray. Let Mama and Sissy handle the family, I can’t bear the thought of them all sitting there like soap bottles not caring that people…” she paused, her eyes filling with tears.

“That’s not a bad idea. The garden and the chapel.” Elijah said.

“I thought I would go to the cathedral…”

“The garden and the chapel,” he said firmly. He inclined his head. “My dear.” Seeing her pensive expression he paused and gave her a last embrace and kiss gently upon the mouth. “When your spirit is at peace, we shall speak again and heal our city. Be of good cheer.”

He walked out briskly with Peleg accompanying him, and when he left the chambers he found Prince Enoch leaning against a wall smoking a cigarette.

“Morning,” said Prince Enoch.

“Morning. Keep an eye on Mara, make sure she doesn’t leave the private part of the residence today. Let her pray out her grief and worry, and when she’s calm I’ll see her then.” he said brusquely. “No private communications. The rest of the family are to issue no personal communications. Put Jocasta on a plane for Gavinium along with Michael. The Dowager is to return to Shiloam Palace.”

Prince Enoch looked pensive. “I don’t...well, sir, I don’t like treating the Queen-Empress like a child.”

Elijah stopped and stared at him. “Then she shouldn’t act like one. Master of Offices, is there some part of your duty you have difficulty carrying out?”

Prince Enoch looked at him warily. “No. And there’s no call for that.”

“You are right, forgive me,” said Elijah. “Your loyalty is beyond question, as is your devotion to Mara. I am grieved at Thomas’ bitterness, by this distraction when there are other issues of greater moment that require my attention. But this event is like a fault in a fuel line. So small a thing that could wreck everything. And it also grieves me that Mara is so...emotional….in her responses.”

“I will look after her and the family, Sharra will deal with the other policy matters,” reassured Prince Enoch. He smiled. “You don’t have to do everything, sir. You may count on me.”

“Of course.” Elijah placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed gently.

He entered an elegant sitting room where several people were waiting. One was General Ashdod, wearing a black dress uniform of the Council Police, another was General Merari, short, peppery, with a small neat moustache, in an Army parade dress uniform, another General Unwerth, dressed similarly, and the last being Deputy Minister of Justice Peter Misabel.

“Where’s the Minister of Justice?” the King-Emperor asked drily, as the men rose and bowed to him.

“I believe the stress of last night required a sleeping pill, Your Majesty,” said Misabel with sadness in his voice.

“Very well.” Elijah sat and nodded to them, whereupon they sat as well in a semi-circle facing him. “I hope you have all had a good breakfast?”

“Oh yes, Your Majesty, we were provided for by your people when we arrived,” said Ashdod with a smile. “And may I say, it was a delicious combination of flatbread, peppered eggs and capybara sausage with goat cheese and served with sweet mint tea.”

“Ah,” said Elijah, smiling for the first time that day, “And how was the sausage?”

“Exceptional, Majesty,” said General Unwerth, a smile back cracking his hard face. “A little grittiness and little fat, but enough for it to be juicy without coating the mouth excessively, salty but the presence of the coriander, basil and cumin bringing out the natural best flavours of the meat.”

“Well, that’s fine,” said Elijah. “I am glad to provide hospitality for the gentlemen who serve me so loyally. So, General Ashdod: what is happening with the investigation of the Homofront possible connection?”

“We have obtained intelligence from the New Visayan Embassy of a list of persons of interest, both within and without their embassy.” He presented a folder which listed the persons of interests and their photographs, though one, ‘Rainbow Warrior’ was clearly a pseudonym and had a cartoon image of the Invisible Man’s iconic bandages, sunglasses and hat. “This woman, Angela Michaels, had her apartment investigated. A Ministry of Police raid on her privately rented apartment discovered the following: Five RPG-7's with 50 rounds of ammunition, an MP-40 with 500 rounds of ammunition, a sixty millimeter mortar with 10 rounds, and 25 pounds of C-4.”

“And what is this proof of?” Elijah asked.

“Thus far, merely what it says on the paper,” said Ashdod. “But in fact she had been arrested already by Deputy Minister Misabel’s people and they have turned her over to us, and she’s in Stonehaven. There could be connections to other groups. The woman thus far claimed to have no knowledge of the materiel found in her apartment.” Our investigation is ongoing.”

“Make a note, Captain,” said Elijah to Peleg. “An ongoing investigation as to a possible connection to Homofront. What about the activities of the demonstrators themselves?”

“What I have discovered thus far,” said Misabel, “Is a definite intention of radical wings of the Peace and Harmony and Intellectual Parties to use the organizations involved in the march to promote the march to challenge the law. Some of it is sympathy for the homosexual issue, but really it’s an attempt, as far as I can tell, to push for an elected Council. As I say: the radical wings, not the main body of either party.”

“I see,” said Elijah. “How do you come by this intelligence?”

“Approximately 3 dozen Deputies were among the demonstrators or directly involved with them, sir, and many academics or philanthropists supported the march as well. We are still investigating the internet connections.” Misabel replied.

Eljjah nodded. “Very well. General Unwerth, what is the overall security situation in Fineberg and the surrounding district?”

General Unwerth replied, “The Military District controls the roads, ingresses and egresses from the city. The Air Force, with Major-General Foliot in operational command, is conducting operations as follows: 4 Blackfly UAVs are assisting an E-15 Early Warning craft in monitoring all air traffic and some signals activity. A P-20 is also monitoring air activity at a range of 700 km beyond the capital, and a flight of 4 GM-20 ASF are supporting this activity round the clock. Our Kometa fixed array is monitoring all communications in and out of the capital.

Python is the hub of our naval security, Admiral Count Amalek controlling boath surface, subsurface, air and ground operations from Python as operational command center backed up by Tyrannis Naval Air Base. The wider hemispheric range of our naval operations, including the light carrier, LHD Reme, two destroyers, four frigates, four Type Ha submarines, 1 minesweeper, 4 corvettes, 4 patrol craft, 4 LCACs for vessels. There are one Type 12 Shotokan battery, one NO. 27 CIWS battery, one TYPE 7 CHU - SAM battery, and one Tora Coastal Defense System Battery.
“Land forces defending Fineberg and the general district include the 14th Hussars, 2 squadrons of the Royal Cavalry Guards, the 1st Military Police Regiment as well as support units attached to the Military District.”

Elijah glanced at Captain Peleg, who was making notes and then said, “Very well. Then let us prepare a plan. Gentlemen, let me be absolutely clear: I do not feel that New edom actually needs any help. However, we have enemies and rivals. Let them see first of all that unhesitatingly our allies rush to our aid at the slightest concern. They will be forced to negotiate with us fairly. And at the same time, let us demonstrate that it is we who are in control.”

“And these radical deputies, sir?” asked Misabel.

“Keep an eye on them. We may be in control but...let me tell you something, Deputy Minister. I have spent most of my life before I became Monarch in the Navy, when I was not undertaking administrative duties. Even the most formidable vessel is subject to many attacks on its integrity--weather, shoals, reefs, wear and tear that only a shipyard close examination can find--and which can tear it apart. I have never forgotten such lessons, and never forgotten that no matter how assured your commands and drills, the unexpected may reveal vulnerability. We do not, therefore, know what they are truly capable of. Let’s not underestimate them. I rely upon you, Deputy Minister, and you, General Ashdod, to get to the bottom of why this happened.” He turned to the Minister of Defense and the commander of the Military District of Fineberg. “Gentlemen, I would like an operational plan for cooperation with our allies on my desk as soon as possible. Thank you all.”

Agrea, Kingdom of Vionna
Ikonae Airfield

Colonel Sir Christopher Davenport had little to complain about, besides the heat. Agrea was Agreeable enough, and his surprise knighthood was, in fact, a long time coming. Davenport had seen service in almost every campaign of the Imperial Air Service for the last twenty-five years. He had fought in Abbas, Holdaria, Zaea and a list of other, lesser conflicts since. He hated to admit it but he missed flying. He had flown huge reconnaissance aircraft and the nippy little aircraft carried by Dauntless-Class Battlecruisers and pretty much everything in between. In recent years he had proved a skilled interceptor pilot but had had no chance to fly one in actual combat, just wargames and training exercises.

Now he sat in an office at Ikonae Airfield learning just how boring it was to return to administrative duties. In the last two years, he had been offered around ten commissions in foreign air forces, where he would doubtlessly have a higher chance of action, sometimes he regretted his dutiful refusals. As he signed another requisition paper (the supply officer was on leave for three days) there came a knocking from the office door.

"Enter." Davenport granted access, haphazardly.

His door guard entered. "Visitor for you, sir." He reported, holding the door open for a suited individual. He snuck out, closing the door behind him, once the figure stood ramrod stiff in front of Davenport's desk.

"You know who I am?" The man asked, sitting down opposite the Colonel and adjusting his tie.

"Yes, Minister," Davenport replied. He'd recognise Percival Mercer anywhere.

"Good," the Minister of Defence offered Davenport a cigarette. Davenport refused, opening his cigar box with a smile. "Do you know why I'm here?" Mercer asked.

"Well... I doubt it's to warn me about the dangers of smoking..." Davenport joked, lighting the cigar and clamping it mercilessly between his teeth.

"Correct. What do you know of New Edom?" Mercer looked at Davenport. Davenport looked at Mercer, they both knew exactly where this was going.

"Do you mean geographically?" Davenport quipped. "Or," he continued, putting on his serious face, "Do I know that the situation in Fineberg is up shit's creek without a paddle? A bit like Frankenlisch, eh, Minister?"

"A bit like Frankenlisch, Colonel." Mercer wasn't a humorous man, but he recognised the Davenport's veiled points. "Now you do know why I'm here."

"Yes, I think so, sir."

"Good. Then you'll accept?" Mercer thought it might be best to actually explain himself a little, rather than relying on telepathy. "We need to nip this situation in the bud. You are the best Air Service officer we've got, that's a simple truth. You'll have a steady command and an escape from this desk."

"It'll just be exchanging one desk for another..." Davenport mused, cynically.

"It might well be your last chance to see action, Sir Christopher," Mercer replied, coldly. He held out his hand.

And Colonel Sir Christopher Davenport, smiling, shook that hand.

Frankenlisch, Kingdom of Frankenlisch
Ministry of Defence

"Well then, we have Colonel Davenport to command the air units and Rear Admiral Barret to command the naval elements." Percival Mercer was already aboard his quite comfortable helicopter and on the way back to Frankenlisch. The conference call had a dodgy signal, virtue of the Minister being in mid-air at present, but it was stable enough and there was little time to wait for Mercer to return, a journey that would take multiple hours.

"And General Buckingham will lead the ground elements?" Arthur Astron asked from his seat in Mercer's office.

"Yes, ground elements will be small. Perhaps a brigade. A little smaller than General Buckingham will be used to but it should be fine."

"I'll be alright, sir." Buckingham affirmed.

"Good. I suggest we get Tristram to get on the blower with the Edomites and tell them. We'll have to ask before deploying anything anyway."

"Very good, Percival." Dochlov Zimmermann considered it his turn to speak up. "How long will it take you to get back."

"I should say five hours, perhaps, sir." Mercer wasn't sure but decided to give an optimistic response.

"Right then, gentlemen." Dochlov decided to wrap things up. "Percival, I need you to arrange what units to commit with our commanders. Larry, you need to speak to the Edomites, tell them our intentions and ask permission to deploy. Arthur, I need you to inform the top dogs in your party and get them on side. And I'll address the House tomorrow and tell them what's going on."
New Edom wrote:Unwerth laughed. “Such hen lobsters are the Vionnans. But then, every Vionnan is half a sodomite."

To: SACTO, Imperium of Arbites and Imperion allies
Security Code: Most Secret, Eyes Only
Froim: General Jonathan Unwerth, Minister of Defense
Subject: Operational Order Proposal Delilah

1. Situation: Unlawful demonstrations leading to riots and civilian deaths, anticipation of possible Homofront or Homofront sympathizing attack on Fineberg. Bombing attacks on the Palace of Justice, Central Metropolitan Bus Station and Municipal Militia Headquarters have resulted in heavy casualties of civil servants and militia as well as damage to command infrastructure for the city, requring military units to step in to provide law and order and command and control.

2. Mission Concept: conduct of allied readiness operations combined with improving of crowd control conditions to prevent further public disorder

3. Intelligence
At this time it is not known who carried out the bombings as Homofront has mysteriously not yet taken credit. While approximately 275 persons were arrested as a result of the demonstration and riots, 24 persons who are 'persons of interest' to the Ministry of Police are currently in custody at Stonehaven Prison.

The following are civilian organizations and NGOs involved with the demonstration:
The Order of the Purple Cross
(Provides free medical services for humanitarian purposes, regardless of faith or community, a politically neutral organization funded by private citizens and by international donations)
National Director Dr. Obadiah Nethilim
Suspected sympathies to anti-government activities: Neutral

The Organization for Free Expression
(An organization that encourages freedom of political assembly, known to support the right to protest and to speak on behalf of LGBT interests as well as marginal political and economic views)
Executive Director Rhea Wither
Political Affairs Director Joshua Orpen
Suspected status of anti-government activities: Believed to contain both LGBT, feminist, Leenic Matriarchal and Homofront sympathizers

The Ecumenical Council of New Edom
(This organization supports religious groups open discussion of peaceful cooperation and believes that non-Christians or Christians who do not support the Morality Act should be able to openly discuss moral issues free of any persecution. They advocate release of all political prisoners in the country.)
Council President Augustine Gamaliel, Archbishop of Bara
Suspected status of anti-government activities: Misguided loyal verging on neutral. Possibly contains anti-government moles from liberal nations such as Ghant, Adiron, Novitera.

The Fineberg Petition Group for Civil Rights and Freedoms
(This NGO wishes to expand New Edom’s legal civil rights and political freedoms to include a nationally elected Council of Ministers and to have more open and less restricted political discourse. It is led by men and women of public and private prominence including members of the Chamber of Deputies, the national legislature.)
Chairman Simon Silvanus, Deputy of the Chamber for North Reme
Suspected status of anti-government activities: This group wishes to change the constitution to allow for an elected council of ministers. It may be that this group wishes to create disorder and chaos in order to step into a power vacuum.

Church Human Rights Interests Syndicate of the Tabernacle
(This organization includes several representative churches which propose that human rights issues should be championed by the churches of New Edom. While similar to the ecumennical coucnil, this group openly champions feminism, anti-colonialism and LGBT+ rights. It has a terse relationship with the Ecumenical Council as it is more radical.)
National Chairman Father Matthew Crispin
Suspected status of anti-government activities: It is believed that this group has had finances and insertion of foreign influence and agents intended to deliberately forment chaos and disorder in order to bring down the government. The influence of foreign gynocratic, communist and atheist governments cannot be underestimated.

The Edomite Freedom Coalition
(This is a more secular, socialist human rights group strongly suspected of being very pro LGBT, which in fact it is. A number of its members were sentenced to penal service or are awaiting trials in Stonehaven Prison.)
Suspected status of anti-government activities: This organization is relatively new, and while it largely consists of students, academics and artists, it may have been directly influenced by the international organization and alliance, the International Freedom Coalition. As yet, no such evidence exists, but the organization is being investigated.

4. Execution
a. Requested that allied air and sea operations widen the zone of control to include international approaches towards the Fineberg Greater District on the Edomite coast of the Province of Bara.
b. Requested that Imperion forces prepare to act to respond to any attempts to land any forces on the Baran coast and that they should conduct anti-amphibious or air insertion forces.
c. That assisting police and urban warfare units provide training and intelligence gathering support for Fineberg Municipal and Bara Provincial militia units.
d That combat engineer units include EOD assist with investigating and responding to the bombing attacks on Fineberg
e That special forces remain on standby and conduct training exercises in anticipation of raids on Homofront or other terrorist cells.

5. Area of Operation
The City of Fineberg and Greater Area, including Maritime District and Military District of Fineberg of the Province of Bara
Municipalities including Benjamin, Aphek, and Quality Bay.

From His Imperial Majesty, the King-Emperor Elijah IV
To
Caesar Silvier Catherina Silvanus IV

I hope that this letter finds you well, and that you have awoken after a good rest. To be honest, I often awake in some physical strain due to a stroke which I had two years ago. Nevertheless I have excellent private care, a loving and devoted wife and co-Monarch, and loyal palace staff, and enjoy many other blessings of God besides. I am fortunate to be in otherwise good health and to have a well trained mind which enables me, through God’s grace, to deal with crisis very effectively. I do not know if you are aware but I spend much of my life s a Navy officer before I became ruler of my country after a series of unfortunate tragedies.

As you may or may not be aware, Homofront is merely the latest of the threats my country has faced. Before Homofront, our nation has had a long history of violent opposition, intrigue and plotting by the neighboring nation of the Matriachal Empire of Deadora. Unlike our friend, the Matriarchal Empire of the Shrailleeni Empire, Deadora is an expansionist and violent nation. While it is currently in the throes of disintegration, it’s aggressive and militant feminist policy included a deliberate undermining of Christian values and morals, which included homosexuality. The same has applied to the forces of international communism, which included deliberate financial and material support for a series of Anarchist uprising s in my country, which have included bombing campaigns deliberately intended to destroy infrastructure and cause human suffering.

Nearly five years ago, the late King James III, along with many members of our national legislature and other leaders was murdered by another series of bombings carried out by the nation of Damoclea, a Regional nation which supported terrorism and aggressive communism, including attempting to force this LGBT agenda upon our country. Damoclea was defeated and conquered thanks to our late Presidents of the Council, the late Perrin Pahath-Moab and the retired General Adam Nicanor. I played a modest role in that conquest and the defeat of our Marxist enemies.

I do not tell you this, however, to justify harsh actions or brutality. As I am sure you hope and can imagine, I do not wish to see my subjects punished merely for speaking their minds, and if they are, not to the point of their harm or death where they offer none to others. I am a Christian man and Monarch, and I believe it my duty to protect and guide them. Nevertheless, I must take very seriously the threats that have left so many of them dead before, including my own dear consort’s father and comrades of mine.

I recognize that your officials must uphold their honour, and yours. We Edomites are in the same position. I am prepared, at this time to offer you this compromise which I hope will suit us both.

First: while you must process asylum request, you must of course also investigate the backgrounds of the persons seeking that asylum. I ask that your people in your embassy and appropriate ministries not at this time extend that assistance to allowing any of the persons who have claimed this asylum to leave the city of Fineberg.

Second: I ask that you release to my government all the names of those seeking asylum who are currently seeking it from within your embassy.

Third: I ask for your agreement that should there be substantial evidence of collusion, cooperation or active support for any terrorist organization be found regarding any of the persons staying at your embassy or, indeed, any association with organizations found to be so tainted that your officials will cooperate by handing over those persons to my officials.

I look forward to our future correspondence and to building excellent friendship between our countries.

I have the honour to be,
Elijah IV
King-Emperor of the Holy Empire of New Edom

Presidential Palace,
Presidential Study

"What an utter mess! It's a clear reminder of why we don't permit parochial schools in our country. Too many people are brought up in religious superstition and never quite seem to even consider that there might be another worldview that is as, or even more, valid than their own. At least our society doesn't punish love between two or more people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Anyway, perhaps it's time to offer to be part of this whole 'emigration pipeline' of theirs. We can even offer to trade citizens, getting rid of the troublemakers who are rotting in jail cells for trying to run parochial schools in defiance of the law of the land," Vice-President Pierre Tsavatsa observed to his niece, President Jeanne Tsavatsa, who had barely been in office for just two days.

"Foreign Minister, Justice Minister, what are your thoughts on this?" the President now asked her sister, Jacqueline Tsavatsa, who served as Foreign Minister, and her ex-boyfriend, Andre Tardis, who was the Justice Minister (admittedly, he was qualified on the merits, having been a departmental prosecutor and judge).

"We need to get them out of New Edom as quickly as possible, and in the process, get rid of our own dissidents, for sure," Andre announced, getting a clear nod from his wife, Jacqueline.

"My husband speaks correctly. This whole clusterfuck is a scandal and one that reeks of human rights violations of the worst caliber. Humanitarian concerns matter most here, but after that, dumping some troublesome religious fanatics off would be a great bonus," Jacqueline cleared her throat in accord....and discomfort over what was clearly a homophobic campaign disguised as anti-terrorism in her eyes.

That Jacqueline was now married to Andre just made things more surreal at times to outsiders, but inside the tight-knit inner circle or cabal or whatever one called it, of the ruling National Popular Movement, everything had worked out very companionably. For one thing, both ladies were pregnant to Andre right now and both knew about it, with surprisingly little awkwardness about this, whereas many women in many countries would be very catty, perhaps insanely jealous, about such situations. The fact that Jacqueline didn't change her maiden name for a married one was another unconventional practice common to the party elite, not keen on embracing foreign traditions related to marriage that many had just accepted in the past.

Yet, for all of their egalitarian talk, the Tsavatsa and their friends were an elite and a political dynasty, a very public-spirited family committed to service to their fellow man. The Revolution, the brainchild of elder brother Louis from his days as a colonel in the Army, had brought them wealth, influence, power, and clout, even as it benefited the people, by any measurable standard, in spite of some glaring errors and mistakes. Of course, Louis's blood relationship to Uncle Pierre, a general, had helped his cause, as had many other advantages in terms of consolidating the power of the regime prior to opening up to free elections, a constitution, and other liberalizing measures.

Now, nine years after the Revolution, the country and its government looked outward a lot more, and what it saw reinforced its own sympathies, policies, ideology, and its anti-clerical leanings. Having embraced secularism to such a large extent, the leaders of the post-Revolutionary Mivango found it difficult not to want to intervene in some way to rescue victims of sectarian and ecclesiastical tyranny from its clutches, albeit in a way that didn't involve instigating some kind of conflict.

This prompted the following missive to the appropriate authorities in New Edom. Anti-monarchist tendencies aside, it was clear that the power rested with the Crown in New Edom, so it was best to deal directly with the anointed sovereigns of that country. That the monarchy was a vestige of feudalism and classical despotism was not germane here and would naturally be ignored at this point.

From: President Jeanne Tsavatsa of the Republic of Mivango
Re: Refugees; Dissidents; Exchange
Encryption: None

Your Majesties,

I will attempt to be concise here. My government, my people, and I have watched with growing alarm the events of the recent Fineberg fiasco regarding the massacre of protesters and demonstrators, as well as the rather dastardly terrorist atrocity committed against your people. It has come to our attention that your government has created a process by which those discontented with your moralistic, sectarian laws can emigrate to another land and live freely as who they wish to be. I wish to propose an exchange, whereby those who have flouted our own statutes regarding the ban on parochial schools can emigrate to New Edom if they so choose, as a swap for those who wish to seek asylum in Mivango. They will mostly be Roman Catholics, but I believe that they can harmoniously adjust to life in New Edom, just as your dissidents can in our secular republic.

If you are so inclined as to agree to this proposition, please contact me, either directly or through my Foreign Minister, my sister Jacqueline Tsavatsa, who is also interested in possibly normalizing diplomatic relations, which I believe lapsed some time during your first civil war with the rise of the Free Congress regime. It was no doubt due to our own Revolution as much as your internal warfare, when the previous regime was deposed due to its failure to serve the Mivangese people adequately. My brother, former President Louis Tsavatsa, might have corrected this had he not had a myriad of internal reforms to undertake in the meantime. Having been recently elected and inaugurated as the democratically chosen leader of my country in my own right, I wish to attend to both matters posthaste.

Sincerely,
Jeanne Tsavatsa, President of Mivango

Morson had continued participating in the protests, even helping people supply camps and such for a sitout near the governmental centre; they were ready to fight for their right to love, for their right to be free. When not coordinating the supply or helping out and motivating people, he had recruited more, talking to people earnestly. He, like many other protesters, were determined to fight for freedom, through thick and thin, and resist whatever bullets came their way, whether literal or figurative. They prepared themselves for another day of fighting, of another day of recruiting. He had already gathered the 'backline' to recruit and help supply people on this protest; it was going to last for days, weeks or even months, because not until every soul is free to love and do whatever they want. Because, as a man once said: "While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.". Morson was ready to take that principle to its extreme, to set free those in chains, to set free those who are beaten for something they cannot change. To set free the human soul.

A Long Road To Ruin

The Militarized Federation of Lanorth
The House of the Chancellor
1,109 Miles From New Edom

The time was 06:30am in The Militarized Federation of Lanorth, and inside the Chancellor's Palace in Zhaburn, Lanorth, the Chancellor, Katadel Aylasar Miedran Synrush, had just awoken from her 10-hour sleep. She felt calm and refreshed, and knew that her 4 children would not wake up for another 3 hours. She hoped that she hadn't woken up her husband, Brenmar, a famous actor and boxer. She was making herself a cup of tea when she heard her bed creak next door. Brenmar had awoken. Only then did she notice that she was wearing only a brassiere and underwear.

She continued, ignoring the fact that he had woken up. She pretended she hadn't noticed, and continued, though was watching carefully out of the corner of her eye. He walked out, and gazed for a moment at Katadel.

"Morning, babe." Brenmar said, redirecting his gaze to the rows of cupboards.

"Good morning, Brenmar." Katadel said, continuing.

"Did you sleep well?" Brenmar said.

Katadel turned on her heels and looked at Brenmar. "Better than you did." She said, laughing. She turned around again.

Katadel heard light footsteps behind her, and before she could turn, Brenmar's arms were wrapped around her chest. She smiled to herself, and lowered her head and rested it against his hands. This was a Tyronian way of expressing deep affection towards the person, who they must be very passionate towards. He stepped away, and got a box of cereal out of the lower left cupboard. He stood up straight, and approached the kitchen counter.

Katadel tapped gently on Brenmar's naked shoulder, and he turned. Katadel locked herself in a tight embrace with Brenmar, who returned the favour. They then kissed for a longer duration of time than normal, adjusting their heads around every now and again to suit themselves. Around twenty-seconds later, they had finished.

Katadel had made her tea, and waited for it to cool down. She walked into the bedroom, grabbed her towel and took a long, warm and soothing shower. She dried herself and got dressed into a formal suit. Brenmar did the same after he finished his cereal.

Katadel finished her tea, and made herself cheese and tomato toast she had grilled. She added a light sprinkle of white pepper, and she ate it. She loved these kind of combinations. Though, the breakfast she had today was her favourite.

She stood up, and went to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She had some mouthwash, applied make-up and grabbed her handbag. Brenmar approached her, and caressed her cheek. Katadel smiled at him, though not revealing any teeth. They kissed very briefly. "Look after the kids, babe." Katadel said. Brenmar nodded and smiled. Katadel tied up her hair, and departed the building.

As soon as she walked out of the door, four men in black suits formed a square formation around her and walked alongside her. There was a black and private car for the Chancellor to travel in. She walked in, and sat in the middle. "You know where to take me, Kling. The Parliament." Katadel said, placing her bag on her lap.

"Right away, Ma'am." Kling said, turning on the ignition. The car started to drive, following the speed limit of 30mph. The Parliament was only a few miles away, and thousands of people had took to the streets to see and wave to the Chancellor. Katadel pressed a button, which folded the roof away. Kling slowed down, and Katadel stood up and waved to the people. Her people. They all cheered and screamed with delight. Katadel smiled, showing her shining, white and stainless teeth.

Katadel briefly looked infront and behind the car, and saw around 2 cars full of bodyguards infront and behind her. She seemed satisfied with this. She then sat back down and returned the roof to it's former place. She looked at her feet. She was worried. It was a serious meeting of the four major parties ane all members of the Parliament, concerning the LGBT+ protests and the attack upon them in New Edom, and possible Tyronian intervention. Would they intervene? It was likely.

Domestic Reaction

Across the Tempesta in Adiron, the media and political scene were reacting to events in New Edom and Bailey’s statement.

Activists tended to assume the worst of New Edom and generally were supportive of Bailey’s statement, or at least what they thought its intent was.

Academics who supported LGBT rights tried to justify Bailey’s actions. On a morning radio show, Grace Vaughn voiced her suspicions about the events in Fineberg. “I’m not saying this is necessarily happening now, but this is how purges can start. We’ve seen it with the Imperium. Governments like the Imperium use terrorism, riots, or other violence as pretexts for cracking down wholesale on minority and opposition groups—well beyond punishing the criminals involved. We’ve seen the Imperium claim that entire minority groups are potentially a threat and therefore subject to incarceration and persecution.”

“Wait, how would you know that’s what’s going on?” the host asked.

“I’m not saying that happened in New Edom. The official response appears to advocate inquiry and restraint—although we’ve seen that before as well. At the same time, look at how many other nations were so quick to hop on the bandwagon, the Imperium included. The Secretary is taking flak for jumping the gun, but how many other nations were just as hasty in casting blame on Homofront? If New Edom received nothing but support for a crackdown, they might assume they’re in the clear. I think the Secretary might’ve hoped to preempt that. Who knows, maybe she and other nations did?”

An online video taken from a protest outside the Edomite embassy summed up a different activist perspective more succinctly. A journalist from a left-leaning news site happened to interview a recently graduated—and nominally employed—Julia Xi. She was amid a generally orderly if noisy crowd with picket signs taking up a long stretch of sidewalk. New Laconia police could be seen just outside the embassy’s perimeter. Cars continued to drive past on the road. “They’re just shooting LGBT individuals in the street now,” she said angrily.

“Did you know their government claimed it was a mistake?”

“Yeah, likely story,” Julia replied, rolling her eyes.

The Opposition took an opportunity to criticize both Bailey and her party. “This is just embarrassing now. What is she doing?” exclaimed talk show host Eric Gannon. “The head of our diplomatic corps doesn’t seem to understand diplomacy, and she once served as an ambassador! You know we obviously don’t know everything, but it does make you think…why did she leave that position? Or did she lose it?”

The Liberal Party, meanwhile, was still in the grips of its own leadership challenge. Both Saito and Fisher used the opportunity to criticize both the government and each other. Saito was followed by reporters in the halls of the Assembly.

“Yes, I have seen the pictures. Of course I deplore the loss of life and injuries that occurred in Fineberg,” he said, still walking, only glancing at the reporter. “I do hope that King Elijah will faithfully carry out everything he said in his address.”

“What about our own government’s response?”

Saito shook his head, stopped, and turned to face the camera. “I honestly cannot tell you what the government’s foreign policy is here. They go to great lengths to get this deal mediated through New Edom, now they’re criticizing New Edom. The Secretary issues a statement, then has to clarify and re-clarify one gaffe after another. Adiron is in the weeds. We need to know our priorities and the President just doesn’t seem to.” A couple of clarifying questions later, he added “Well you know, Mr. Fisher has asserted I’ve been too unwilling to compromise with the government. After this week though…” He shrugged.

Fisher appeared on a talk show the same day. “I have a lot of questions about this statement. Why make any open references to intelligence? Why couldn’t it have waited until there was an official statement from Fineberg? Couldn’t this have been settled through our embassy? I could go on. It just isn’t adding up and is rather irresponsible in my view.”

“Well, the Secretary must have felt we shouldn’t ignore a possible human rights issue,” one of the other commentators pointed out.

“We honestly don’t know much at present other than eyewitness accounts and King Elijah’s address. I have no doubt that what happened on the streets of Fineberg must have been harrowing, and the loss of life there is terrible and regrettable. There are other, arguably more effective ways to address the concerns of the protestors though,” Fisher said, folding his hands on the desk. “The Secretary—and her whole family, really, who I do have great respect for—she represents the left wing of her party. They want to see social justice front and center, they side with the Greens, and they want to see these demonstrations. I’m not sure if that’s the wisest basis for foreign policy, and I’m also not sure it was wise for our present Opposition Leader to try to work with them.”

George Rowan was sitting on his couch in his office reading a newspaper about the unfolding events when there was a knock at the door. “One moment,” he said, folding the newspaper and reaching for his eyeglasses on the end table. He went at sat at his desk, brushing off his suit jacket and cinching his tie, then said “All right, come in.”

Snyder was first through the door. “Well now we’ve had it, it’s the straw that broke the Green camel’s back,” she said bitterly.

Rowan raised a hand as others filtered in. “Yes, I’ve seen the papers. It’s another wedge. I’m aware.” As the door closed he said “Right now we have a choice to make. One way or the other the future of the Republic is at stake. Each of you, go, one at a time. Kevin, you first.”

Martin ran a hand through his hair and blew out air. “Let her go,” he said. Snyder looked over at him. “It’s more than just this one gaffe. If we want to come out on the right side of this conflict, we need stronger alliances, stronger trade ties, more influence outside of Ceti. We can’t do that with a Secretary of State who’s constantly putting her own ideals over the immediate interests of the Republic.”

“Is that what’s going on?” Rowan asked.

“I heard it from Hugh Atkins himself. Her statement wasn’t completely impromptu, there was a release planned, but she moved the timetable up and didn’t allow planned revisions. The result, well, the whole world saw.”

“All right. Dana?” Rowan asked, looking at Snyder.

Snyder immediately replied “Mr. President, we’re stuck with her until the next general election. If you fire her you are guaranteed to lose the left right away. Bluford will say we broke our word, the Greens will say we can’t be trusted to uphold our values, it’ll be a mess. In spite of everything, keeping her on is the lesser of two evils.”

“She’s the lesser of two evils if our only goal is to win at party politics,” Ferrain said stiffly, before noticing Rowan looking at him over his glasses. He sat up straight again.

“Anything further, Dana?” Rowan asked.

“If we’re heading towards a minority government, then we need as much of the party behind us as we can. John Pendergast is still very much in this game. I’ve been looking into it. A lot of our members going off on their own and pushing back on the left? They’re his friends,” she explained.

“Should get rid of him instead,” Cruise grumbled, sipping on a can of soda.

Snyder was pulling a pack of cigarettes out before catching a few looks from around the room and pocketing them again. “We can survive if we lose the left. We’re cutting deals, doing damage control. We’re finished if we lose the real base of our party. Pendergast will pick the center up in a heartbeat if we fire him.”

“All right, thank you,” Rowan interjected. “Guy, now what do you have to say?” Rowan prompted him.

Ferrain crisply replied “Mr. President, our goal has been and must be the security of the Republic. We must deal with the Imperial threat either through force of arms or through a lasting, feasible peace settlement. We are currently are pursuing such a settlement. Since President DeGroot turned to the Edomites to mediate this, we must maintain our relations with them, and Secretary Bailey does not seem like the right person to do that. This statement all but openly states she distrusts them. Constantly contradicting and correcting our own Secretary of State will make us look confused and ineffective—that is, assuming we aren’t.”

Ferrain appeared finished, so Rowan looked to Ober. “What do you think?”

“Don’t think we should do anything until we have someone else on deck, Mr. President. I don’t know of any replacement who would keep us from coming unglued all at once,” Ober said plainly. He nodded to indicate he was done, ignoring looks from some of the others.

"Alan?"

"It's a tough one," Cruise said, smacking his lips. "We break our deal with Bluford and it's like Dana said. But if we run our foreign policy like fascist New Othman, then the whole country's in the barrel. The Republic's gotta be the priority. The ideal fix is to keep Bailey but rein her in. I dunno, a few stiff drinks or a spanking before every appearance to straighten her out or loosen her up."

"I'm not volunteering for that," Snyder quipped.

"Then my answer's the sack," Cruise concluded before polishing off the last of the can.

That was everyone in the room, so Rowan thought a moment. “One more thing. Kevin?”

Martin looked at him. Rowan asked “What do we really know about what happened in Fineberg? And I mean for a fact, not in these wild statements or in the media. What do we know?”

Kevin thought about that a moment. “That there was a demonstration on embassy row, riot police dispersed it, and there were a number of deaths and injuries.”

“Government personnel witnessed this firsthand?”

“Embassy staff, yes. Anything else about the demonstration before the police arrived mostly comes from that journalist who broke the story...or the demonstrators themselves, but they have their own take on it,” Martin said.

“Nothing else?”

“Not with any degree of certainty. The embassy won’t know everything obviously,” Martin said.

“We don’t know who was planning what or what groups were involved. We don’t know their intent. We don’t know anything, really,” Rowan said, looking briefly annoyed. “Here’s what I want to know: who are these people in our embassy? Are they actually asylum seekers? Were they invited? Were they vetted?”

“I spoke to Director Atkins. They’re apparently demonstrators who pleaded for shelter in a panic when they heard gunfire. They were put through security as they entered but no time for background checks. They’re all confined to the lobby while on embassy grounds, and they're free to go home whenever they wish. We already sent away any who needed medical attention. I’m not sure if any have actually requested asylum.”

"If they do, I want normal procedures followed. We have laws, we have a system. If they do seek asylum, the embassy should simply follow that system. Otherwise, our embassy should not indefinitely house people who are not there for a stated purpose . It's not safe to my mind, would you all agree?" Rowan said.

Ferrain replied "They are, in fact, a security risk. Any among them could have extremist ties, and now they have seen the inside of our embassy, been through security. As terrible as it was on the streets, it was reckless, even dangerous to admit them."

"That can't be helped now," Rowan said. "In this matter and generally, I think we need to make it clear to the Secretary that the Ambassador should be allowed to run his embassy as he deems fit. Is there anything else about Bailey or material facts about Fineberg?"

His staff shook their heads or said nothing. “Very well. I will take everything said here into consideration,” Rowan said, looking at each of them. “Thank you all.”

His advisors filtered out of the room.

To All And Sundry Regarding This Matter Of Our Former Adversary, the Holy Empire of New Edom, formerly the Allied States, the Kingdom, and the Theocratic Republic of New Edom, to wit, verily,

The Consuls have voted to reaffirm the following official protocol regarding National Sovereignty:

We, the Consuls Marius Salvius and Gaius Curtius, as the new constitutional government of Samnium, hereby proclaim that 'national sovereignty' is absolutely sacrosanct. No matter how oppressive, corrupt, or malevolent a regime might be, it is an issue for the population themselves and perhaps their own armed forces to overturn. Neither the World Assembly nor any other international body has any legitimate authority to 'revoke', 'restrict', or 'regulate' the acts of any government, person, or faction within a sovereign nation. The Consuls will not approve of even economic sanctions, for to punish ordinary people for the acts of their leaders is misguided in the worst way. It is the considered opinion of the Consuls that those who condemn internal oppressions and injustices should look to their own abuses and failures to redress them first. War is for the sacred purpose of defending one's home, nothing less tangible than that. So say we all.

Alternate Samnium that never fell to the Romans during the Social Wars. Often uses Roman practices and customs borrowed from the SPQR.
Demonym is "Samnite," not "Nova Samnite."
The "Nova" in the name is just necessary because of game mechanics. It is not canon anymore. Yes, I am aware that the gender is wrong. Latin isn't my first language.

From the Office of the Monarchs

(Most Secret Encryption as Appropriate to Officials Relevant)
To Admiral Ghazan Quardya, President of the New Yaman Junta of National Restoratio

Your Excellency,

We are very grateful for your letter of support. Naturally, as Christian rulers it is hardly our intention to order our officials to shoot or otherwise harm our own people. Our policy for homosexuals is to urge them to behave, regardless of sinful urges, with Christian character and morality at all times. If they cannot do this, they must either be subject to our laws or leave the country, which we have been working on treaties to make possible in the most peaceful manner. If, however, they resort to rioting and terrorism they will be treated as enemies.

We are glad that you and your government can see the wisdom and clarity of this, and look forward to future continued good relations.

We have the honour to be,

Elijah IV, King-Emperor
Mara I, Queen-Empress

To Melissa Onarici, Ambassador of New Othman to New Edom

Your Excellency,

Thank you very kindly for your letter of support and friendship. We would, at this time, appreciate your government’s cooperation with any information regarding any expatriate Edomites who sympathize with the pro-LGBT movement or with the freedom of speech focused NGOs operating in our country. We do not suggest that your government arrest them or any such thing, but rather that if possible your government could offer any information as to any suspicious associations or financial transactions that they commit.

We urge that you communicate with the Foreign Minister any further concerns, and we also of course are still committed to investigating and bringing to an efficient end the conditions of the Treaty of Beaulieu as its conditions have, to the general view of our government been fulfilled.

We have the honour to be,

Elijah IV, King-Emperor

To Raymond Nelson, Ambassador to New Edom

Your Excellency,

I hope this letter finds you well. It is unfortunate that before you could be formally invited to a soiree or enjoy the lovely delights of our beautiful city that so unfortunate a series of events should take place. I hope you will not, however, judge it by this particular incident.

Regarding these unfortunate events: at the moment our primary concern is restoring order and peace, as I am sure you can well understand. Therefore, any official inquiry is waiting on that restoration of order. To date, the Militia headquarters in Fineberg was badly damaged by a terrorist bomb, in addition to a large bus depot and the Palace of Justice itself. It is puzzling to me why your greater concern is citizens losing their lives as though our Militia and Army are in some way directly responsible rather than in all likelihood caught up in a disturbance which may have had the unfortunate necessity of the use of deadly force. As I have said, however, no inquiry has actually been launched yet.

Regarding freedom of expression: your own government has constraints upon this notion, and I would like to bluntly state that it is not a priority for our government. Freedom is expressed, in New Edom, by freedom from sin and disorder, and the rights of political assembly and dissent are limited in character within those boundaries.

I am sure you have heard His Imperial Majesty’s speech regarding the intention of receiving citizens’ petitions and groups to hear out their concerns and grievances. There will, however, be concerns about law, holiness and loyalty which any number of emotional appeals cannot overcome, which are for the greater good of our people and the faith that protects our nation by God’s grace. To put it bluntly: the “LGBT Agenda” will never be acceptable in New Edom. It is against our constitution, against the laws of God and is essentially a rejection of the Christ. What can be done is to reform the character of homosexuals and other aberrant individuals or to enable their peaceful emigration to accepting nations, a compromise which I am sure you will agree represents the mercy and generosity of our government.

As to Secretary Bailey’s unfortunate remarks, the Holy Empire’s government is not entirely satisfied that they referred to your own domestic intelligence. It strains credulity that she was merely referring to unlikelihood. Her view expressed is an entire refutation, and yet the bombings took place. Furthermore, we have not heard a complete statement from your government that there are no spies on our soil. We would like to receive a promise that your government is not spying on ours in the form of a public address by someone suitably senior in your cabinet to reassure ours. I would like to point out that our Imperium allies were very alarmed by the implication of Secretary Bailey’s words and expressed the concern that the trust in the peace process has been shaken. They too require reassurance on this point.

Finally: in keeping with His Imperial Majesty’s policy, I remind you of the importance of removing our citizens from your embassy unless they have business there as per our bilateral diplomatic agreements. I look forward to hearing of your government’s compliance and the maintenance of the amity which our governments have purused thus far.

I have the honour to be,

Hosidius Geta, Foreign Minister

Your Catholic Majesty and Excellencies

The love of the resurrected Christ be upon Garza and its people, upon Your Catholic Majesty and His Excellent servants. May holiness, peace, love, faith, and truth guide you forever and always.

We very much appreciate that you perceive that any deaths and injuries in the latest unfortunate incidents do not constitute any national policy, but were just that: unfortunate incidents. We will be making a full inquiry as to the cause of these disturbances and the tragic deaths and injuries that occurred, but of course we also have a great deal of concern about the terrorist attacks. Are they connected? Who might know? At this time, none but the Almighty.

We hope, fondly, as always, to continue to be assured of our country and kingdom’s loyalty and friendship, and that any information of terrorist activity that reaches your security services’ attention will be shared with ours through our Ministry of Police.

Your Excellency,

I am greatly aggrieved to hear of the bombs that have been detonated in Fineberg, and I would like to offer the assistance of the Enlightened Matriarchy in caring for the victims of the attacks. As I stressed in my previous correspondence, my government is concerned that the instability in Fineberg provides opportunities for evil and dishonorable people to launch attacks against your country. This seems to be horrific proof of these fears.

In confronting this threat, naturally I refer to sources of intelligence located within New Edom. Our embassy is actively involved in screening our own citizens as well as those New Edomites who wish to journey to Shrailleen for noted criminal or terrorist affiliations. Since we work closely with your own security services in this regard it can scarcely be construed as surprising. We also consider the media of our journalists and reports from our citizens as important sources of intelligence in this regard, as well as information offered by those individuals who took refuge in our embassy during the violence. We would be happy to share our analysts' reports on this incident with your government at any time. As for "active intelligence," your government is of course already aware of SISI activity in New Edom as part of our few joint operations, and this is of course the extent of it.

Our concern is that the unrest which has preceded and characterized both the riots and these attacks is a symptom of underlying instability that must be addressed. New Edom has made great and honorable strides in confronting these concerns, and this cannot be denied. The emigration policy has doubtless functioned as an important "safety valve" for internal unrest surrounding this issue. But as you said yourself, a violent confrontation was inevitable. No opportunity existed to discuss where the demonstrators would march or what their concerns were, because such demonstrations are not permitted by your government in the case of homosexuals. Nor does it appear that your government has successfully deported the problem to other locations.

The NISA and Her Enlightened Majesty are concerned by these facts, and it is apparent that your government is as well. I feel that it is obvious that current New Edomite policy in this regard will continue to be a source of unrest and instability unless new policy is formed and put into practice. I do not propose that solutions will be easily reached, but I believe that Her Enlightened Majesty's proposal which I have previously outlined forms a solid first step toward addressing these concerns. Her Enlightened Majesty has been greatly pleased to hear that the King-Emperor may intend to pursue precisely this avenue of inquiry by meeting with the demonstration leaders. It is her hope that this wise meeting will prove fruitful.

I feel I must also address the unpleasantness of this task, it is not in the nature of our culture to question the practices of others, especially not those who we consider to be friends. However, this ongoing issue is quickly becoming a focus of strain between our two venerable cultures. I hope that yourself and Their Majesties will understand that our concern comes from a place of sincerest empathy and goodwill.

May the Light of the Mother smile upon the people of New Edom, and may those who would do them harm find only destruction without Her guidance,

Foreign Minister Zattem Resbruck,
On behalf of the National Imperial Shrailleeni Assembly, and,
On behalf of Her Enlightened Majesty the Mother Empress Chella Resyanna fe Shrailleen

Fineberg, New Edom
Shrailleeni Embassy

It had been a long and tiring night at the embassy. The staff worked on a mixture of coffee and the kind of energy that comes from confronting a crisis. Many of those who had taken refuge in the embassy were unsure if it was safe to leave, they voiced fears of being killed or arrested in the streets for their participation in an illegal protest. When the bombs went off in the city, this only exacerbated their fears. The embassy was not at all equipped to host this many people over night, and not much sleep was had. In addition, the staff was busy taking frantic calls from Shrailleeni citizens concerned about their loved ones and making inquiries into the status of those possibly detained or killed by the New Edomite police.

When King-Emperor Elijah's speech was broadcast, some of the New Edomites still expressed worry that they would be arrested. But many more, being tired and uncomfortable, began to return to their homes. A few of them had provided important background concerning the protests to the Shrailleeni staff, including the names of the organizations involved and some of the organizers. These people were given special consideration in exchange for their cooperation, if the Ministry of Justice asked for them the Shrailleeni would not be able to find any record of them having stayed at the embassy. When they left, it would be at times when the embassy conveniently noticed smaller police presence outside. If any of them seemed well-placed within these organizations, they were noted as potential future contacts for active intelligence operations in New Edom. Arrangements were made as soon as possible for the most critically wounded to be transported by emergency services.

After this had been done and the situation calmed from that of an emergency to one of underlying tension, indeed, thought Katara, perhaps the norm for the Shrailleeni embassy in New Edom, the ambassador spoke at length with the Foreign Minister in the Imperial Palace about where the Enlightened Matriarchy intended to proceed from here. It was apparent that this incident was seen as a point of opportunity. Even since the collapse of the New Day Party, New Edom had become increasingly intolerant of feminist and LGBT perspectives, perspectives that Shrailleen had always viewed with a kind of quiet, imperious approval. In the end the feminist issue had been resolved through the formation and independence of Gloria Regis, with no small amount of Shrailleeni planning. But the LGBT issue was different, many of New Edom's actual LGBT people had emigrated to Shrailleen or other places already. This was not a matter of a dispossessed people, but one of the ongoing cultural cold war between Shrailleeni and New Edomite values. An increased space for the LGBT in New Edomite public discourse was to be seen as an increased space for Mother Goddess Worship, and therefore to be promoted.

It was Ambassador Katara's idea to reach out to the other embassies which had opened their doors to the protestors. For the Shrailleeni doing so had been a matter of conscience, but for others it may have been a more direct expression of political dissent. Their public statements provided insight into who the most likely candidates for cooperation were in this regard. Adiron, Ru, and the New Visayan Islands were considered particularly likely to work with Shrailleen, to have the power and influence to produce results, and to align with the Shrailleeni position that diplomacy was superior to violence.

Greetings to Your Excellency,

I would like to congratulate you on your appointment, Ambassador Redstone was always a valued neighbor and colleague here in Fineberg and I hope that we will be able to continue such a relationship.

I know that your embassy was one of those which opened its gates to protestors seeking refuge from the fatal violence that resulted from the illegal demonstration. Although it is now apparent that our honorable New Edomite allies did not intend such a disastrous response, I believe that both of our governments see that this is an issue of grave concern. We do not wish to alienate our allies, but my government believes that this incident is an opportunity to apply pressure on His Majesty King Elijah IV to pursue meaningful policy change that will both save lives and improve the condition of what few LGBT individuals remain in New Edom.

It is my belief that this can be accomplished through coordination on the part of we few nations who are of like mind on the matter. My suggestion is this: that we share between our embassies information regarding the incident and our evaluations of it, and coordinate a united front of public concern regarding current New Edomite policy. This should be directed at increasing legal protections for freedom of speech in New Edom, which should encompass the ability to debate publicly about LGBT concerns.

I look forward to your response, and may the Mother watch over you,

Her Excellency Ambassador Katara Telta fe Vangarra,
The Enlightened Matriarchy of the Shrailleeni Empire

Greetings to Your Excellency,

I believe this to be our first formal correspondence since your appointment to Fineberg. Allow me to offer the greetings of Her Enlightened Majesty the Mother Empress Chella Resyanna fe Shrailleen, who I represent alongside the women and men of the National Imperial Shrailleeni Assembly. May the Mother of All smile upon you.

It is no secret at this time that the embassy of Ru has been among those who opened its gates to those New Edomites fleeing the violence which resulted from the recent illegal protests. In doing so despite the quite difficult political situation which would result, you have demonstrated your commitment to the ideal of compassion which is honored greatly in my own society. It is therefore that I write to you as one whose government would like to ensure that this recent tragedy is not one which can be easily repeated in New Edom.

It is clear now that our honorable New Edomite allies did not intend for their response to the illegal demonstrations to become as violent as they did. However, that such an accident could take place is greatly alarming to Her Enlightened Majesty and to the Shrailleeni people. As we have recently experienced such demonstrations in the Enlightened Matriarchy, it is our wish to recommend upon our New Edomite allies a similar solution to that which has worked for us, which is to say greater legal freedom for public expression. Unless I am mistaken, your government appears to view the situation in similar terms.

My suggestion is that our embassies should share between us our reports on the incident, and coordinate a united front of public concern regarding current New Edomite policy. This should be directed at increasing legal protections for freedom of speech in New Edom, which should encompass the ability to debate publicly about LGBT concerns.

I look forward to your response, and may the Light of the Mother smile upon the people of Ru,

The Enlightened Matriarchy of the Shrailleeni Empire

Greetings to you Your Excellency,

Allow me to extend to you the warm greetings of Her Enlightened Majesty the Mother Empress Chella Resyanna fe Shrailleen, and that of the Shrailleeni people expressed though the National Imperial Shrailleeni Assembly.

It has come to the intention of my government that Your Excellency has entered into talks with our honorable allies, the Holy Empire of New Edom, regarding the situation of LGBT individuals in this nation. This demonstrates a certain level of compassion and understanding on the part of your government which the Enlightened Matriarchy finds most honorable. However, I would submit to you that the result of such talks, the so-called "Rainbow Pipeline," is not an effective policy in this regard.

To explain, the Holy Empire has for many years allowed the emigration of LGBT individuals from their country to more hospitable nations. The Enlightened Matriarchy was one of the first in the region to welcome the LGBT of New Edom into our country. Therefore in view of the long history of such agreements, it is evident that the troubles which afflict New Edom do not lie with the simple existence of LGBT individuals. Rather, my government beliefs that this latest incident is reflective of difficulties whose base lies in the current policies of New Edom regarding freedom of expression.

It is clear now that our honorable New Edomite allies did not intend for their response to the illegal demonstrations to become as violent as they did. However, that such an accident could take place is greatly alarming to Her Enlightened Majesty and to the Shrailleeni people. My suggestion is that our embassies should share between us our reports on the incident, and coordinate a united front of public concern regarding current New Edomite policy. This should be directed at increasing legal protections for freedom of speech in New Edom, which should encompass the ability to debate publicly about LGBT concerns.

I look forward to your response, and may the Mother of All smile upon the people and government of the Confederation of the New Visayan Islands,

Her Excellency Ambassador Katara Telta fe Vangarra,

The Shrailleeni Embassy

Sister Beatrice wept while she watched the television news film of the dead and dying of Fineberg, observing it on the screen with other asylum seekers. If the wretched souls hadn't already died from the brutal blows to the head, trampling, the giant nets dropped by helicopters or the bullets, they might be dying in the overwhelmed city hospitals. Perhaps those who were dead were the lucky ones.

A comforting hand was placed on her shoulder, and she saw as she turned, startled, that it was Abigail Carmon, her friend and colleague. Both of them worked for the Ecumenical Council, but Abigail was one of New Edom’s few female professors of history and economics, and was also on the Inter-City Development Project. They had been lovers for four years, two respectable middle aged women who most associated with good works and gardening. They lived apart, Abigail in the small urban house she had inherited from her late husband, Beatrice in a private room at the Convent School.

“Awful, just awful,” murmured Beatrice. “I am sorry, my dear, I must focus on the important realities..”

"While the project...the Rainbow Pipeline...is in its present mess," said Abigail, "there's going to be nothing but problem after problem. We haven't quite worked out the international legal implications yet..."

"International legal implications?"

"Any project that aims to simplify security and passport controls at airports is bound to have countless international legal issues. The Imperium, as usual, is dragging its feet and raising all sorts of objections. And with Count Lalery out of the office of the President and Count Sharra in, who knows what he will advise to Their Majesties? The King-Emperor is a good man...but not a compassionate man."

The Shrailleeni were as ever floating nearby, seemingly serene short people, soft voiced, courteous and more kind in their gestures of generosity than in their genuine warmth, which was subtle and hard to grasp for the more openly passionate Edomite commoners and middle class folk who had flooded into their embassy. Sister Beatrice sighed. “We should get back to helping the Purple Cross distribute the goods,” she said softly.

Abigail embraced her. The two women held one another and smoothed hands down one another’s backs, stroked arms, laid cheek to cheek and were comforted. “We should,” said Abigail, breaking away with a smile.

Sister Beatrice was aghast to find that most of the people who had remained within the walls of the embassy were either injured who had been afraid to go to hospital and had concussions, broken bones or possible internal injuries, or else were genuine refugees: activists who had been underground and afraid for their lives. They included some pale looking LGBT activists who had been hiding out and had been waiting for a big public disturbance to try the trick of running to the embassy. The final lot were a bunch of disorganized, stubborn but unclear students. They all wandered like lost lambs when they were not just lying on cots or huddled against walls sipping tea or coffee looking miserable.

“The Purple Cross will be here soon,” she reported to Shrailleeni official and refugee alike. “I know you are all worried. I would like to lead everyone in prayer. I represent the Ecumenical Council, and the Archbishop of Bara supports us. I am going to ask the officials here if we can get into contact with him and figure out how to keep us all safe. But first, as I say, we should pray together. Let us remember that time is vast to us but in God’s eyes it is a mere moment.”

“The God of our fathers cares little for us,” one young man said bitterly, holding a friend, whose face was bandaged, by the shoulders, their thin naked bodies looking very vulnerable.

“Is God man or woman?” countered Beatrice. She smiled as several looked at her with surprise, others a bit more hopefully as they had attended meetings where this issue had been discussed. “Are we not made in the image of God? Male and female God made them in His image...yet we assume the He. It does not matter. Indeed, there is an old word for the title of God the Provider as ‘the great breasted one.’” She spread her hands. “God is greater than the wisdom of men. Let us focus on this: we know that God is great, God is generous, God is merciful, and God is good.”

The Feohhord, Goldwing Finance Head Office, Contawaraburg

"I told you New Edom was a risk," grumbled Klaus von Verden into his beard, sullenly. Eanflead of Ceastre rolled her eyes and tapped the tabletop with her stylus. "Yes, you did, but these riots haven't actually affected our business, have they Klaus?" she replied, her educated and clipped voice ringing through the room. In a modest hall decorated in traditional Brytisc style, with dark wood panelling and lamps fashioned to look like horn candles, the senior staff of the international Goldwing Finance banking corporation were sat around a long table with a smooth black surface which, when tapped, revealed itself to be a touchscreen, or rather a series of touchscreens. The windows were currently darkened to provide privacy and reduce glare on the long table.

The thick bottle-green carpet on the floor muffled much of the sound from below them, and there was a faint rustle as Klaus glanced at the CEO in irritation. As Director of Security, his job was no easy one - to ensure their banks were proof against physical attack or infiltration. Luckily, the concern had long ago created a partner position to take care of digital and cybersecurity, so the more common threats of the 21st Century were handled by someone else, but the escalating violence and threat of war in New Edom had been dumped firmly in von Verden's lap and he was not thrilled.

"No, not yet. And I'm not suggesting we take a principled stance, although it would probably sit the headlines nicely at home. But we have employees and accounts over there, and I'm not sanguine about doing business in a nation that is so paranoid that it deploys tanks against unarmed civilians."

"So what do you suggest we do, Klaus? Close up shop?"

"Not exactly..."

Goldwing Finance, Nass City Centre Branch, New Edom

Harlaus Hellmann scowled. He had taken the position of branch manager in New Edom because it represented opportunity. With so many positions opening up at once, it was a chance for those who had been waiting in the wings to seize promotions and prove themselves, rather than waiting for some old man in the Contwaraburg suburbs to retire and free up a seat at the table.

But that had been years ago. Three years, to be exact. Since then, he had come to despise New Edom. Bara was not too bad, with its modern commodities and lack of enforced nudity, and he travelled to cosmopolitan Fineberg when he could, though he preferred to travel abroad. But Nass. Gods be good, Nass. A backward province of a backward country, a huge sprawl of industry populated by people even other New Edomites considered backward and unrefined. At least he wasn't in Hillel, he supposed, surrounded by a bunch of militia lunatics with rifles, however polite they seemed. And so many people wandered around naked! In Hillel, people lived active rural lifestyles, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but here in the grim concrete jungle? Edomite unmentionables were just another thing he was sick of looking at.

And now this. Gay terrorists or something had committed crimes over in the capital, and in response there were tanks on the street mowing down protestors like it was going out of style, and suddenly nations were threatening to invade, others were mobilising troops to support New Edom, and the mood on the streets had become notably more ugly.

Goldwing Finance did surprisingly well given it was headquartered in a pagan nation that was relatively tolerant of homosexuality, but then again Brytene was also famously tolerant of its own Catholic minority and Goldwing Finance was a sleek, reliable and successful enterprise that valued discretion, neutrality and dependability. Personally, like many Brytons, Harlaus thought there was nothing wrong with gay people, though he was a little more skeptical of the myriad of new definitions and labels people had begun giving themselves - a lot of it seemed inherently contradictory, like calling yourself 'genderfluid' because you 'present' as a male or a female at different times, but then simultaneously getting angry when people suggest that there are aspects of your physical appearance that can look, or 'present', as more male or female.

With the recent tensions, however, he had noticed his customers acting far more tense. Only a couple of people, a tiny drop in the 8,000 or so customers his particular branch was proud to serve, had actually closed their accounts so far, but if things came to open warfare he knew it would get worse. Not only that, but he happened to know that one of his tellers, Sara Eichenhart, was a lesbian. With her artfully curled brown hair, perfect manicure and sleek business attire, she didn't fit any of the 1980's stereotypes of a lesbian, and it hardly came up in daily conversation, but she had privately come to him and asked for a transfer several weeks ago because, unsurprisingly, she felt somewhat lonely here.

Startling him out of his reverie, his phone began to ring...

En Route to New Edom
Amphibious Group-HMS General Zadok Hespernius

“Thank you very much.” Macnarin was in his room, his ready room. A place where he could relax, the SIS had been considering sending people into the radical feminist Empire that was in essence a failed state. Deodora was on its last legs, the Santiago Alliance should have contingencies in place. The area was prime for Homofront to set up. Admiral Macnarin looked at the report that was handed to him by an aide, he watched him go, the boy had potential, could make Commander, and Macnarin would put him up for a destroyer or something. A good posting, he was from a decent family.

Now to the report, the MRC was going to be deployed. The reclusive and somewhat elitist national Police force of Mcnernia was in theory a military force. Meant to be deployed to handle things when the Army was unnecessary or when the local Police would not be capable of handling the situation. Black painted vehicles and black uniformed troops. Save when they needed to be in the field. Then it was camo and they were indistinguishable from the Army, Or Marines.

“Send me across thousands of Kilometers, with so many ships and troops, and then say that we may not be needed….” Macnarin chuckled for a moment, he wanted to get in good with Elijah, the man had his respect. Macnarin was always eager to impress. He had said the right thing in the right ears to be getting this far. After the civil war if you did well then you were made an officer. Knighthood and a name like Macnarin certainly helped. The Vice Admiral looked at the report and wondered what was going on at home.

Greetings

Our deployment is to fulfill the need for crowd control and the need for training. The Fineberg Militia’s retreat in the face of the Protest. Shows that you have a need at least according to the Ministry of the Interior Office of Police Analysis for well trained riot personnel to disperse unauthorized gatherings of people. The MRC comes with water cannons and LRAD sound devices. We could bring in chemicals for the water cannons, but I gather water will be fine, that and CS Gas, also taser rounds, etc. We have a lot of tools.

The Havenians have served in New Edom before and they will provide CBRN capability in the event of a Chemical attack. Gothic powers have been known to provide chemical weapons on the low to any buyers. The Parthians primarily.

The Green Palm Cafe

Outside the cafe, three two and a half ton trucks bearing loads of Municipal Militia rumbled by, the men inside wearing riot helmets with visors. Districts were being sectioned off by roadblocks and identity passes were required to move around. The Ministry of Transport had shut the trains going in and out of the city down except for vital emergency services, apparently the transport battalion attached to the Military District of Fineberg had taken it over. A pall of fear hung over the city, and business was bad.
Abner, the owner, moodily watched a football match playing from Nass and ignored everything. Abner only tended to converse with regulars and only helped out when someone important came in. He also worked the coffee machine and waffle machine, but other than that did little. A mood, olive skinned man with a thin moustache and a white apron over his rolled up shirt and pants, he sat on his stool and stared with his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands. The television broadcast kept getting interrupted by news flashes.

Rebecca and Tabitha were waitresses, and they wore light blue sundresses and aprons and pink sandals as part of their uniforms. Business was a little slow, because of the bombings and riots. People cautiously went to work but a lot of areas of the city had been slowed down by Militia and Army roadblocks. A tension was in the air. The main customers they had were a couple of men who had come to Fineberg on business, apparently from the small town of Benjamin, who were anxious about being held up as they sought permission to get a license to convert some farm warehouses into a factory to lease to a foreign manufacturing company.

“What’s a GLBT?” one asked as he scanned a newspaper.

“They're letters for parts of the cause. G stands for Gay - that's men who are attracted to men. L is for Lesbian - those are females attracted to other females. B stands for Bisexual - people who are attracted to both male AND female genders. And T is for Transgender - people who identify themselves as the opposite gender instead of how they're born." the other replied.

“I heard about stuff like this. I mean I get the idea that it’s all code,” replied the other, shaking his head. “Bunch of perverts. Wanting to be a woman when you’re a man, or a man when you’re a woman? Not only sinful, but crazy. City people and foreigners are really weird.”

“I have never understood why one man would covet another man’s hairy ass when there are finer gardens to plant your seed in,” agreed the other, pausing to leer at Rebecca as she crossed the floor to approach the single man's table, her bottom swaying prettily against the thin cloth of her dress. “Never mind, my friend, we’ll just be here a few short days…”

“I’m not staying a day longer,” declared the other, putting his newspaper down and then reaching for his coffee cup. “Bombs going off, riots in the streets? It’s like the Civil Wars again…”

"Some mess they created, wasn't it? Homofront, was it, or perhaps it was a foreign country that wants to spread homosexual propaganda for its own purposes. Can you think of any country that would want to do that? Not mine, of course. My government's godless and secular, sure, but has bigger concerns, you know, what with enforced disarmament and the talks to end that," Barca asked Rebecca, flirting with her as subtly as he could without making it impossible for her to realize what he did.

“I’m afraid I don’t know much about that, Your Honour,” said Rebecca warily, offering him a refill of coffee (which cost half price). “But Your Honour should like this as it comes from your own country. I’m just thanking Christ that we have a firm hand at the wheel, you know what they say about His Majesty, He sailed his ship on the seas and now He sails the ship of state..." she whistled the popular folk tune."Will that be all sir?" in spite of her friendly demeanor, the big strange man frightened her.

Simon and his girlfriend Helene, from Lazodiria, were the other two patrons of the nearly empty cafe. Simon was working on a laptop. He was a graduate of 3 years at the University of Fineberg, and had until recently worked for the Ministry of Cultur composing music for educational films.

“What would you say my influences are, hon?” he asked the young woman. The girl wore rose-colored granny glasses and had a blue bandana tied over her blond hair. The paisley skirt and filthy bare feet suggested strongly that she was a modern day hippie. She was very attractive in spite of this, her firm bosom loose and free beneath her beaded halter top.

‘You think too much,” she said in excellent but very francophone accented Latin. “Who cares what your influences are? You want to compose from the heart, the struggle of the people...this is your mind still stuck in the Ministry, under the patriarchy.”

"I dunno," said Simon. "I'm in a position to be an influencer. Trusted musical voice. I got named as an answer on a quiz show last most. But if I am going to be an influence, shouldn’t I report on who influences me?”

“Only in the political sense,” she agreed. “Listen…” she leaned in towards him, affectionately pinching his nose a moment, “Don’t get too hung up on labels. The only thing good about the LGBT thing is that it wrecks the shackles that bind us. It’s freedom. All for freedom, baby.Let your music speak from the heart, break the chains, like in that Gloria Regis anthem.”

“Break the chains, yeah…” he began typing on his keyboard. “That’s good. Yeah….”

Helene stared around the cafe and then whispered, "Hey, you think that guy is a government agent?"

"Who?" said Simon, barely glancing up.

"That big guy over there with the goofy fake Othmani accent and the moustache. It's like, obviously a disguise, man. I bet he's Ministry of Justice or Council Police or something." she nervously sipped her tea.

The Tyronian Decision, Reaction And Outcome

To: The Edomite Foreign Ministry, The Edomite Ministry of Defense
Subject: Tyronian Parliament Decisions
From: Foreign Minister J. Zarapute

To whomever it may concern,

The Tyronian Federal Parliament of the Militarized Federation of Lanorth have voted amongst themselves yesterday in an urgent meeting of Parliament to discuss your nation's recent attack on LGBT+ protestors.

Chancellor Synrush, though wanting to continue neutral relations, is appalled. She has been condemning the Edomite Government for the past twenty-four hours, and has also halted some of her daily routines, in her free time, to formally decide Lanorth's possible or inevitable involvement or intervention in what we call the 'Edomite Homosexual Crisis'.

Many possible decisions have been proposed, such as the withdrawal of embassies, military intervention and, though very unlikely, war. Chancellor Synrush has removed the war option, leaving two decisions. She has considered risks, has looked at possible reactions, yet has chosen military intervention.

Chancellor Synrush wrote to the Chief of the General Staff of the Tyronian Armed Forces and has confirmed the decision. The high commanders within the Tyronian Armed Forces have decided that 22,500 troops shall be deployed to secure order and peace, whilst in the process calming the protests down and offering them help and support. The troops being deployed shall not take any sides, but shall act as a peacekeeping force.

The withdrawal of troops will begin once homosexual riots and protests have ceased, and peace is secured. We hope this will not cause any problems or decrease our current relations. We Tyronian all want peace in the world, and will do everything to make it happen. This is a step closer to peace, some say.

Until then, we wish you all the best, alongside good health and prosperity. We hope to speak again soon.

Kind regards,
Foreign Minister J. Zarapute
The Tyronian Government

Montz City, Cossack Khanate

Sergeant Razor led the small group of about 8 through the darkened lower-class section of the city. One couldn’t call the area a slum, since the rich only earned about 6 times more as the poor. Either way, the streets got narrower, the buildings got denser, and more suspicious areas emerged. The other 8 men, including Captain Jagat, were armed with S&K-19 SMGs and pistols, while Razor had chosen a CF-20 A-SMG, usually aa weapon chosen for close-combat and intense missions.

The group entered a narrow alleyway, and ascended a metal staircase. The early morning sun was shining, and melted the light snow that had been there earlier. As a soldier reached the top of the stairs and looked through a frosted window, he motioned for everyone to duck. Razor moved forward and put his ear to the door…

“I don’t care about your commitments I care about the job!”

“Shut up Hocking, you’ll get us all rounded up”

Razor flicked his gun to full auto…

”Daniel, will you let me talk? You two, you are going to take the luggage now, yes now, and going to the targets. You two are already late. Move!”

Upon “Move”, Razor stood and fired a burst through the window. A yell emanated from within, and return fire clanged against the cold metal railing. Jagat pulled the pin to a grenade, and threw it, followed by a flashbang. Razor shot open the lock, and threw the door open. The four people inside were crawling on the ground, covering their ears. The soldiers stormed the room, killing three people, but the woman reacted quickly. She grabbed a bag and fled the room, followed in hot pursuit by the whole Cossack team.

Jagat opened the terrace door to find her missing. Meanwhile, the soldiers opened the remaining bag and found several explosives.

“Sh*t!”, Razor swore, throwing his gun down in frustration. Jagat had nothing to say…

The Selvik Times

Montz City, Cossack Khanate

Today at 8:15 a.m, a car skipped a red light, swerved to a sharp right, and drove through the front of a shopping mall. A passerby reaching out to help was blown off his feet by the explosives.

Several ambulances, police, and NSG vehicles arrived soon after, to find 10 people injured and 3 killed. A social media statement was delivered minutes after the attack claiming that “the recent attack in Montz City was a message to the oppressors that we will not stand idly by”.

The police cyber security division quickly took down the account that made the post and tracked the user, whose device was in Montz city perimeter during the attack. The device, a smartphone, was found abandoned on a sidewalk approximately a half-kilometer away from the site of the attack. Public cameras have failed to identify the shadow that left the smartphone, but was identified as a woman. Montz city limits will be guarded by police today and until the perpetrator is found. However, the driver of the vehicle has been identified as an illegal immigrant and a person of non-Cossack or Kyrian heritage.

Ambari limits, Vaishalle, Cossack Khanate

Yesterday, a group of volunteers executed a wanted homosexual criminal that has only been identified as Marie D., wanted since the 2017 riot in Selvik. It has been made clear that “Marie” was living along with her partner Ana F., also wanted since the riots. “Ana’s” name and photograph was released by the Department of Police, along with a profile for general use by the public and any volunteers. The volunteers who acted bravely within Ambari town limits have been identified to be from CALO (Cossacks Against Liberalization Organization). The execution seems to be within Cossack law and punishment, and the town Majorem has considered gifting the leaders of the group with monetary reward for being vigilant. Local police has said that they are actively hunting for “Ana” and will appreciate civilian cooperation and vigilance similar to the Ambari volunteers.

The Office of Transmarine Affairs
The Foreign Ministry,
Fineberg, New Edom

Melzar put his tea down, smacking his lips slightly. “I see. Lieutenant, if you’ll excuse me for saying so, you make an unusual emissary. You are a junior officer. Are you perhaps connected to someone in a high position, able to direct policy?”

He let that sit a moment, and then said, “My government’s policy concerning such issues, is thus: nations which have alliances or treaties with us may, under circumstances that are acceptable will we permit any foreign military or police units on our soil or in our waters.”

He poured more tea into his cup. “The easiest way for your country to participate would be to join SACTO or to establish a bilateral agreement with our country. Which would be entirely possible. The situation is a grim one, and we can certainly use allies who are proactive and have professional comradeship to offer.

“There is one concern however: a news report…” he reached for a folder on his desk and opened it and examined what lay therein, frowning. “About what appears to have been an act of vigilante justice against an LGBT activist of some sort...well it’s a news report, and I’m sure you know what swine journalists can be…” he smiled faintly, “But our government does not have the goal of killing homosexuals. Our government’s position is conversion, adherence to our laws and faith, or emigration.”

The Foreign Ministry,
Fineberg, New Edom

The Foreign Minister, Hosidius Geta, was a man slightly below average height, of Cornellian origin, with a rather blunt, big nosed face and a manner that belied his height; brisk sure movements, regular march-like walking each morning giving him a lot of endurance. He also swam vigorously three afternoons a week. Even though he was not a tall man, often his staff would have to keep up with him as he walked through the building. Right now he was charging out of the building, on his way to Betharan Palace for a meeting of the Council of Ministers. This was always something of a game to those in question--you wanted to not be late, of course, but on a case by case basis it was key to determine how much on time or lsat minute you wanted to be there for. The late President of the Council of Ministers, General Pahath-Moab, had had a knack of arriving after everyone else, picking one or two officials present to talk to like it was a personal favour, and force everyone to follow him to sit down so that he always had the initiative. Geta had decided to have an informant alert him as to when Count Sharra left his residence so that he could coincide with his arrival and get him alone without Lalery, Ashdod, Unwerth or Baalim.

"The Minister imagines that this keeps everyone on their toes..." Elizabeth Corbulo, the Senior Undersecretary, had remarked to Basil Jerome, the Undersecretary for Transmarine Affairs.

"Whatever keeps him happy, I suppose," said the balding plump undersecretary. The two of them were in Corbulo's own office, about to discuss Regional affairs, each of them seeing the current crisis as important, but not, well, important

"Happy? He has all the happiness he deserves," said Elizabeth Corbulo with a disdainful rise of a dark eyebrow. “Shall we get down to business? I anticipate that in the Adiran response…”

To Foreign Minister J. Zarapute

Dear Minister,

I apologize for my uncharacteristic bluntness, but I think that the concerns your letter raises require it, unfortunately.

My government takes issue with the following language in your letter.

Our government’s “recent attack on LGBT+ protestors”. Our government intended no attack, and the protestors involved consisted of civil rights demonstrators and ecumenical demonstrators as well. Any attack was not a result of a deliberate policy, and the matter is being investigated as a possible unfortunate incident for which particular individual officials or officers may be responsible.
The term ‘peacekeeping force’ is also hardly appropriate as our government has not agreed to your deploying of this force in our country, and therefore their arrival would be seen as an invasion of our country.
The term ‘military intervention’ is therefore seen as an intent to declare war on our country as no negotiation has taken place and there has been no acceptance of your government’s intention to use military force to occupy our capital.

I should advise you that if you send any military force into our territorial waters or airspace without our government’s explicit permission, they will be attacked and driven off with the utmost aggression.

My government is prepared to discuss your government’s concerns about our conduct towards our own citizens in the spirit of friendliness and honesty. If you have specific concerns about the recent incidents or our government policy, you are quite welcome to present them and I will be happy to respond with the greatest clarity I can offer.

I have the honour to be,
Hosidius Geta, Foreign Minister
