Elections Held in Taranima

The 2023 General Election was held today under surprising circumstances. Despite the Crisis surrounding Bill AA52, and the Assassination and manhunt for perpetrators of the Assassination of Late Prince Sergiu Silva d’Elisa, no premature elections were called. After a tumultuous campaigning season, Taranimans have had the chance to make their voice heard at the ballot box.
As of this hour roughly 82% of districts have reported their results, and the results appear to herald a significant change in the balance of the Parliament. If current trends hold, it appears that the Unity and Justice Party, which had shocked the nation with their breaking from the ruling coalition to support Bill AA52, has suffered severe blowback from their voter base, going from over 10% of the vote to just 1%. Similarly the Voscoi Agrarians who, after the fallout of Ion Gorvescu's capture at the hands of Gaulish authorities and revelation of links between ranking party members and Erdőtestvérek, have seen support for their party collapse almost completely. Other regional parties have also suffered losses in proportion of the vote share. The biggest winners so far have been the Worker’s Parties, the Greens and the Bread and Roses party which may go on to form the first majority government since the collapse of the Bread and Roses coalition in 1982.
Exit polling indicates that the most important issue for voters was the cost of living crisis, with the overwhelming majority of the population believing that left aligned parties would be better on resolving the crisis. It is widely believed the support and campaigning of Princess Alexandra may have had an impact on this outcome. Other major issues include the nature of the Confederation, with Federalists from both the right and the left winning out over the Confederalists, particularly after the outrage from the Gorvescu Affair; and foreign policy with voters ultimately divided on the matter of Taranima’s outward face.
"I will remind our Coalition partners in the Bread and Roses party that we will still be here if they work with us or not."
We have reached out for comment from party leaders on all sides and have thus far received a few statements:
“We are elated at the results so far, it was a difficult campaign but I think we successfully made the case that austerity cannot resolve our economic issues. Hopefully we can work with other parties to build a more prosperous future for us all.”
-Natalia Alexandru Văduva, BRP MP from Maikop, Ilcharest, and Prime Minister
“The results of tonight have been quite difficult for us. While I hope the remaining votes will be enough to put us in a better position, I must concede we’ve been beaten. We will have to redouble our efforts to provide an effective opposition and make a better case for 2028.”
-Corneliu Ionescu Mihalovich, Party Leader Liberal-Conservatives, MP for Cour d’Elisa.
“I will remind our Coalition partners in the Bread and Roses party that we will still be here if they work with us or not. While I hope to continue working with them, they shouldn’t ignore us even if they can form a government on their own,”
-Elizabeta Kosma Donescu, HMWP MP for Nordumar
At this time the Royal Palace has not responded to calls for comment.

Following disastrous results for his party, Filip Zahari Daskalov has announced his resignation from leadership of the Voscoi Agrarian Party. Without a clear successor, the possibility of the Voscoi Agrarians recovering seems unlikely. Similarly, the UJP, a longstanding fixture of Taraniman democracy, finds itself in troubled waters with several members stating an intent to launch a leadership challenge against party leader Georgios Illianescu Fardumo. Thus far no additional changes to party leadership have been announced, though as the results of the election are confirmed, it is likely further challenges and resignations will occur, as this election marks another in which the Center-Right has failed to win, and indeed has consistently suffered the loss of influence to Far Right parties.
As always we will continue to cover the ongoing events as we obtain more information.
