War in the Grand Sands
The Socialist Democratic People's Republic of Tissemoult, officially ruled by a military junta but in reality under the rule of General Hasim Wadoud, was generally an international pariah diplomatically. It however did not do much to seriously arouse the anger of other powers. The discovery of several oil deposits in neighboring Kano, conveniently located near the border with Tissemoult, proved very tempting to take. In light of these discoveries, made in the mid-20XXs, Tissemoult started a couple of border disputes with Kano. Although these disputes were made over patches of desert that would seem pointless to the uninformed observer, the only really notable of these being over the status of the town of Ain Ghat East in Kano, they would have massively benefited Tissemoult if it could have obtained access, much to the detriment of Kano's economy.
The rather bland Republic of Kano was for the most part still the unsettled wasteland it had always been, many of it's people nomadic and the country having a small number of villages and towns outside of the region where the capital was situated. A hotbed of ethnic strife, the leader of the Republic, Mbuyu Koando, struggled to find a way to unite his nation. A resource expedition sent by foreign companies did uncover a small oil deposit outside of the contentious border region, but those following up and prospecting found much more worthwhile deposits. Those discoveries lead to the current situation today. In response to Tissemoult's claims, Kano made one in the informally named 'Wodo Jut', given how it was believed that one particular oil deposit might have extended into that region. The scene for a conflict was by now just about set.
█████ - Under Tissemoultan control. █████ - Under Kanoan control.
- al'Aswad Mintaqa Airbase: Recently constructed airbase, finished about three years ago. Rather minor in size, main purpose is to provide a sort of staging area for Tissemoult's air force. About four MiG-25RBTs and six MiG-29S's based here.
- General Qudamah Sadi Airbase: A more major airbase, Qudamah Sadi has been subject to several improvements. Two dozen MiG-27M bombers and six MiG-31BMs are based here along with three S-300 batteries positioned in the surrounding area.
- Ouled Said Airbase: The largest airbase in the region, Ouled Said was built relatively close to two towns which have been turned into military bases, M1 and M2. It is currently staffed only with cargo aircraft, the fighters and bombers normally stationed here have been moved to airbases closer to Kano. Plans have been made to ship supplies from Ouled Said to border towns to help supply the garrisons of Tissemoult's remote towns and assist in a ground occupation of Kano.
- Ain Ghat: A remnant of colonial times, with a highway running through it that extends throughout much of northern Tissemoult and Kano. It was a reference point used when the borders between Tissemoult and Kano were drawn. The second largest town in the area, compared to N'Haoud. Garrisoned by 600 soldiers.
- Asla: Built from scratch two years ago. The town basically exists so that it can supply nearby operations by Tissemoult to extract oil from Kano's oil deposits across the border. Staffed by 300 soldiers, mainly to protect the oil well workers.
- M1: Village built around an oasis a long time ago. Now used to house military personnel from Ouled Said Airbase.
- M2: Much like M1, built around an oasis. A large training base and firing range is now located here.
- N'Haoud: Once the center of a large iron ore mine, the reserves has since mostly depleted. However, N'Haoud is the administrative center of the region so much of the population still remains. About 400 soldiers are stationed here.
- Oum El Khoudir: A small oasis village. Not much of note except camel herders.
KANO
- Ghazoudou Airbase: A small airbase used to prevent violations of Kano's border in the center of the Great Sands Desert. Staffed by eight MiG-23's and a few Igla's. Also garrisoned by about 50 soldiers to prevent sabotage.
- Umon Airbase: Kano's main airbase in the region, it is better built and more better maintained. About nineteen MiG-25PD's are located there along with several civilian recon planes. Garrisoned by 300 soldiers with some anti-air.
- Ain Ghat East: Like it's neighbor Ain Ghat, Ain Ghat East is a large town in the region. Kano finds security of the highway particularly important, and has assigned 400 troops, the majority of it's forces in the area, to protect it.
- Kora Tora: An oasis village, the largest one in the Kano side of the region. Small dirt airstrip there, but not much else.
- Mbot: A sizeable town that mainly serves as a resting place and point of congregation for the local nomads.
- Wodo: Newly built boom town populated solely of oil workers and their families. Arguably the most important Kanoan possession in the region, guarded by about 150 soldiers with a few tanks. Directly claimed by Tissemoult.
