Gholgoth Region, Telrosian Compact Mainland, Capital Geo-City Fellegvár, Anax's DomainThe capital city of the Compact, Fellegvár, is one that has stood, if one can call any underground city 'standing', for hundreds of years, since the founding of the states of the Compact, Katona and Kereskedő, in their proto modern forms. While it was originally an above ground city, in past decades, the choice was to move underground as a way to get away from the sheer cold and worsening weather of the climate, but even with this change, the city was as lively as it always was. The low murmur of people moving, interacting, conversing and living their lives could be heard, along with public transportation and personal vehicles roaming the various accessways. And in the center, the Anax's Domain, the estate of the two rulers of the Compact; each had their own estates within the primary city chosen as the states capital, but Fellegvár was the agreed upon national capital, due to its proximity to Katona's and Kereskedő's main territories. As the administration was the first in many decades to pass a variety of reforms, rebuild from the Duskflower Rebellion and secure an alliance with the Kylarnatian Imperium, it had become a busy place as of late. Bureaucratic and logistical departments expanded and evolved, as more and more they had to handle issues.
As they expanded, the state governments began pushing back, putting pressure on their Anax's to curb the expansion, or focus it on their interests. And such pressure forced the Anax together, and in ways they didn't appreciate it, leading to the Domain being much....
louder then normal. Arch Priestess Isteni Hatóság, leader of the Telrosian Sacerdotium and head religious figure in the Compact, did her best to ease her headache, downing two ibuprofen and nursing a water as shouting could be heard from the other end of the table. All the other staff had left, at her direction, as she realized this was one of the arguments they had to blow off steam from the growing conflict with their constituents. A bang on the table drew her attention, as the glass threatened to leave her hand. Eshmun's voice accompanied the physical strike, continuing his own barrage.
„-and this expansion of the military you have proposed?! We have a large population to draw on and we are concerned about the Kravenites, the Scandinavians and other Gothic threats, but the levels you are proposing are ludicrous! We are not the Kylarnatian Imperium, Adon, we are not the police of the Gothic region, nor should we be!”
The other woman, back straight and face hard, her military background showing itself as she restrained herself from exploding on the other, her diplomatic training helping her try to keep the conversation from escalating. Isteni could see, however, it was fraying; Eshmun had a particular talent in angering anyone in the room within a sentence. She took a step forward and stabbed a finger into a stack of paperwork on the desk, showing graphs, calculations and images within the region.
"It is a cost, yes, and a draft has not been issued since the Rebellion, I know this is not something your constituents in Katona are eager for. But we both agreed, we-
be quiet Eshmun, I am not done speaking, we agreed that the Dephiran Emperor Tristan was completely right at the Summit in one regard: That not all of the Gothic states have done their part for the maintenance, protection and general well being of the region. There is an active, lethal, constantly growing cancer in the Kraven Reich; there is no debate to be had on this. While I understand that, no matter how many pictures, videos, testimonies we show, that not everyone will understand this, this is not an excuse to do nothing like before. They feel its so far away, and with so many states in between, we are safe. But, we must do something; we made an oath to the Caesar herself about what we intend to do; while the past couple years have done wonders in cooperation with reforming and improving both our civilian and military sectors, we need to do more and not have it be something the Kylarnatians guided us to do. We need to stand on our own two feet as soon as possible, Eshmun!”
The balding man rubbed his head, hands shaking in frustration, as he tried to keep the rage from going black and saying something he didn't mean.
"I understand that! You think I don't? I am as committed to my promises as you, but we have to have limits. How many dictators and totalitarians have used such crisis' to their advantage, citing 'the greater good' for so called reforms that restricted their liberty and gave more and more power to the government. We have been constantly expanding the national government in the past two years; while many reforms were necessary and even vital to the new era we find ourselves in, we're pushing too hard, too fast. The last one regarding having the Compact to have the Anax, even if it require both of us to agree, to be able to declare martial law without consulting the state government's first, we barely managed to pass. You had to appeal to the unity of the Grand Mother so many times, I thought she'd descend from the heavens to see why people kept shouting her name. We are losing our political capital at an accelerating rate, Adon! Soon enough, both states will dig in their heels and make this a lame duck government, unable to do anything. We need to give them time to adjust, adapt and work on getting supporters in strong positions. We can't change everything overnight!”
Both continued to go back and forth, the anger swelling more and more, Isteni realizing they were just about out of constructive arguments and would soon enter the spiral of arguments going nowhere and just getting angrier at each other, so she moved to intervene when the door opened. This drew the attention of both Anax as well, and all three looked to see a sharply dressed woman, wearing a primarily black suit, but with silver inlays, and a well-kept set of blonde, hair kept in a ponytail. In her hands, she carried a tablet, and the other was putting away her ID card back into her coat pocket. Upon seeing all three, she straightened and inclined her head,
"Honorable Anax, and Her Grace, I apologize for my intrusion, but Director Rejtett said this was Priority One intelligence that you needed to see immediately.” Isteni's eyes glanced to her shoulder and saw the emblem of the reformed intelligence arm of the Compact, the Strategic Intelligence Bureau, or simply known as SI. Adon and Eshmun looked at each other, anger still smouldering in their eyes, but the Arch Priestess had other plans. A loud thump took their attention once more, her staff having been brought to strike the ground, drawing a concerned gaze from the agent.
"The business of governance can wait, my Anax's. Too much said in anger can undo the bonds of fellowship we have, and not show what we truly meant to say. Patience is a virtue we endeavor to have in all things. We must first attend to this report, don't you agree?”
Adon nodded, Eshmund staring at Isteni, whom returned it calmly, before following suit and coming to the edge of the table. "Report.” The woman nodded and began to speak again.
"I am Agent Húsz, assigned to our Varathron Operations Command, to keep watch on the auxiliary Gothic territories and report back anything we see. We have been seeing a flurry of activity as of late and the Director focused our resources to find out what is happening. In short order, this is what we found and we believe there is a growing concern to both Gothic and Compact security. If I may?” She held out the tablet, and Eshmun waved for her to proceed. She connected it to the hub embedded into the table and its screen displayed the Varathron region. Two states were highlighted, identifying as Nannasia and North Ozbekskinia, coming into focus with known reports, geographic maps and satellite imaging of the areas.
"In the past twenty four hours, reports began coming in of increased activity from the Nannasian regime; while we known they are under the auspice of the Solisian Union, we are still unsure if this is being coordinated and ordered by them or this is a local endeavor. We are seeking diplomatic and other archival records on the Union to get a better understanding of the situation. Back to the topic at hand, they moved an influx of troops, vehicles, and airborne assets to the border with North Ozbekskinia and in short order began to move across.”
Adon's face changed, taking on a thoughtful aspect. "Any declaration of war, or any communication of any kind?”
"None, ma'am. They just built up and then pushed across; it could be a message they are sending, or they didn't want to waste time on diplomacy which would have given the Ozbekskinians time to prepare, or there is an objective they need quite badly. We are unsure, but we have assets working on gathering information on this. This is not the primary concern of the report, however; around this time, we detected movement from a certain state.”
The map pulled back and zoomed in on a section of the ocean, coming into focus to show a fleet, averagely sized for a naval asset, but it was the flag shown next to the image that took the warmth from the room for all three of the occupants. A skull-headed black eagle with thunderbolts across its wings. Only one nation had that as their flag.
"The Kraven Reich is on the move, my Anax's, and Arch Priestess. While we do not believe this is their first incursion into Varathron, we believe this effort is more direct than normal, and the information about the Reich from the Imperium matches this fleet to what are known as Reich Subjugator Fleets. It is the belief of the Director, and of Strategic Intelligence, that the Reich intends to take territory in Varathron. It's first expansion in decades.”
Adon and Eshmun sat down heavily in their respective chairs, while solemnity emanated from the Arch Priestess. The former spoke first, "It doesn't make sense. Silvier had spoken to us, discussing a war wit the Reich is to come in the future, it has been too long since the last and everyone has built up and tensions are rising. But this still feels too early, not to mention what they have committed...it's too small to be the start to it. Something else is going on, do you have any other information, Agent?”
"I do, ma'am, however I'm afraid it's not good news.” The map changed to focus on the waters outside Nannasia. "The Reich was moving its fleet through this area, shadowed by a Mian fleet and possibly others, warning them away from their 'operational zone'. The Nannasians, either out of fear, desperation or ignorance of what they faced, launched an attack on the Reich ships.” Satellite footage indicated the launching of the missiles and pictures were shown after, the damage and smoke coming from the Reich ships.
"By the Sons...” Adon's face was gray while Eshmun turned his attention to the agent, waving for them to keep going, knowing there was more.
"Shortly after, we detected an entire Naval Arm leaving from the Reich and heading in the direction of Varathron. It is our belief this is the Kravenite response to the attack, and shows that whatever operation the Subjugator Fleet is on, it is one they cannot allow to be interrupted. Shortly after, the Mian fleet engaged the Nannasian one briefly, firing one wave of missiles, and then another but that was detonated before striking. It is our belief from these actions, and the diplomatic communique sent by them, that a Replicant may have been involved. In response to the Kravenite buildup, other Gothic powers are beginning to stir. We have seen increased activity in the Empire of Jagada and the Most Serene Republic, as well as the Kylarnatians.”
She put down the tablet and resumed her straight posture. "That is the end of my report. The Director is already reaching out to Imperium Intelligence to confirm certain facts and get more information, but he wanted to provide what he had and ask for further orders.”
The Anax and Arch Priestess all sat for a moment, digesting the information. The Reich was on the move again, and with the Nannasians stinging their hide, a full Resource Fleet was on the way, with a damaged Subjugation Fleet maintaining their course to whatever their objective was. They were beginning to move, if it was another step in the chess game the Gothic region played with the Reich or the beginning of another attempted Reich expansion, it was not certain. What was certain was their response to it. Eshmun and Adon leaned over, briefly conversing quietly with each other before leaning back and speaking to the agent.
"Inform the Director he was right to contact us as early as he did and that he is to perform the following actions...”

Province Khonsia, Varathron"..And that is all that is known currently, Major General Vas, Fleet Admiral Alatti. We are in progress of contacting the Imperium for more information and to coordinate our efforts. Current orders are to prepare for military operations and await further instructions. If you have any last minute supply needs or tending to your commands, I suggest you get them done now. The Reich waits for no one.”
The transmission from the mainland ended, but the two men remained in their seats, as the screen shut off and the lights came back on, their staff a mixture of fear, eagerness and trepidation. Vas turned to face his naval counterpart. Hair cut short per military protocol, white as snow to indicate his advanced age, but strongly built and tall.
"So it begins, finally, it seems, old friend.” The Fleet Admiral was a younger man, with only flecks of gray in his hair to show the effects of time, who was pouring himself two cups of coffee, before pushing one to Vas.
"So it would seem.” His voice lowered. "You know we're not ready for a full scale conflict with the Reich.”
"Of course I know, Alatti. But we won't be alone in this; Kylarnatia, Mian, and Jagite forces are already consolidating their forces to meet this threat. And while we certainly aren't enough for our own participate, the political climate back home doesn't lend itself to being able to send much more in aid. We'll probably get more supplies and support elements but not much else. So the 25th Division and the 4th Fleet will have to do for our contribution.”
The Admiral shook his head. "We've been doing these wargames for the past two years, developing and mastering the technologies, arms, and armor the Imperium has granted us. Never did I think we'd be caught in a conflict with the Reich, so early to boot.”
The general nursed his coffee for a moment, eyes faded away. "It was only a matter of time, everyone in the military knew this as soon as we were briefed on the Reich threat. In a way, we're lucky; we don't have the terror of those who have faced them before to bog us down. We still have the optimism of the green and the young, to hope this will just be another war, nothing special.” Downing the rest of his coffee, enjoying the feeling of the warm liquid heating him up, he set aside the mug and stood up.
"Well, we have a job to do and probably very little time to do it in. I suggest we dredge up any and all briefings on the Reich, what they are, their tactics, everything we've got and run them through all the drills we have. Prepare them as best we can.”
Alatti finished his own and matched the general. "Yeah, hopefully the other Gothic states bring much more, or we could be dealing with a bloodbath.” He gripped the other mans arm, murmuring a chant from the Libro Testamentum, before leaving. The general followed suit, opening the door to the sound of boots stamping on the ground, cadences being called and the engines of vehicles; they had ordered the division to ready themselves and now he went to address them on what was coming.
