Apikai is a large island, some ways off the coast of Canada, named for a native tribe's word for "Home". Since the arrival of British colonists in the 1600s, the island has seen multiple bloodbaths. In 1792, the nation launched a revolution for independence, which would last well into the 1820s before eventual independence. The 1800s would be rocked with hardship, and in the 1920s, a strongman leader was brought to power, a fascist who promised to finally stabilize the country. But in the 1940s, encouraged by the Allies in the grip of WW2, the people of the eastern half of the country revolted, leading to another brutal revolution, this time worsened by the realities of modern warfare.
The war lasted until a conclusion in 1977, when the nation was partitioned between the fascist regime in the west and the new democratic nation in the east. For a while, things were peaceful. But now, halfway into 2018, that seems a distant memory. The rise of extremism on both sides of the political aisle following a fraught emergency election led to Spokesman Peter Blume taking power with the help of the military. The resulting junta promised to bring democracy back, but it would not be enough to satiate the people.
We Must Dissent, an activist group with socialist leanings, spearheaded a massive wave of protest across the nation. When foreign governments interfered and caused the protests to turn violent, they were met with crackdowns and arrests. They quickly came to the conclusion that peaceful options had been exhausted and that violent overthrow of the junta was the only way to secure a future for East Apikai. The resulting civil war has led another group of affluent billionaires to create their own faction, the Civilian Union of Salutem, promising protection and refuge for citizens caught in the crossfire in exchange for loyalty to the cause of a conservative, free market oriented Apikai.
Now, these three factions go at each other, again spilling blood on Apikaian soil. Only time will tell who will overcome the other factions, and all three will see their rivers run with blood.
