The Police Superintendent had evacuated Aestorian-aligned civilians, and there were a dozen fortified Aestorian air bases, spaced from the targetted cities, from which the Commonwealth was free to strike. What chance did Munkchester have?

Well, if they had the sense to take refuge in urban areas, they might never be stamped out...

Separately, because this downward slope has been predictable for some hours now, we have reached the position where we can evacuate pretty much all remaining Aestorian and Rhinoceran civilians within half an hour and the remainder, and all military personnel and equipment besides, within six more.

The Azadistan State Government has asked whether we would consider their independence. They are clearly bonkers.

We have two options: (1) clamp down on the country. This would oppose self-determination, be impossible, and be barely tenable; so this option is nonsense three times over. Therefore the only option (2) is to continue with the evacuation and grant independence in a vaguelly orderly fashion.

It is Bluewell all over again: we intervene in a country, and then they decide they do not like us. So we leave them to the wolves to encourage the others. Regrettably Ralkovia showed restraint, but in this case I think the lesson will be short and clear, Azadistan is in no position to defend itself.

We have been left somewhat out-of-pocket by Azadistan, but the safe evacuation is our priority. After that is fixed we can transfer debts incurred to the name of Azadistan. We will of course be providing safe harbour to Azadistanis taking refuge in the Commonwealth.

Hopefully the conflict will not extend to the Aestorian Commonwealth. I see no reason why it should and we should be on even stronger ground internationally.

Then the antennae ceased to be and the planes once again became truly stealthy. They only knew each other’s location as their computers were in constant chatter by short-range lasers, which served as high-speed spotlights signalling between the computers in code, leaving the planes happily datalinked and happily operating in a bubble, five kilometers wide, of their very own, cut off from the outside world, only turning on an antenna for a hundredth of a second, every few minutes, for quick updates, such as the latest satellite intelligence on where the fleet had got too.

To port the F-70s were closing in to join after their final refuelling. The seas were turquoise, a vast tranquil expanse that the EA Shark and Shadow zipped over, with all the impact of a neutrino.

Combat air patrol shortly, probably, probably five hundred km or so from the carrier. They were a thousand kilometers out; and the two aircraft had separated to fifty kilometers.

The lasers counted down three seconds to each other, ensuring synchronization of the clocks. Then, the bulbs flashed, turning the semiconductors into antennae. Over the horizon; up to a thousand kilometers away, the EA Shark emitted a very long wavelength pulse to pick up ships; followed a few milliseconds later by the EA Shadow emitting a medium wavelength pulse to try to pick out any planes. For a hundredth of a second the radar bounced off everywhere and back to the receivers.

And then the two aircraft gently turned back together again, and, once forty kilometers closer, they starting exchanging laser signals again to triangulate the positions they had just detected...

The Decis Commonwealth and Confederacy, as the Decis regional single market, has been the mainstay of Ausitorian trade for decades, ending centuries of hostility between states in Decis. Slowly growing in authority, and led by a Liberal Minority government for some years, the Decis Confederacy has been hailed by some as the Outer Commonwealth, under avowed Liberal President Bernard Sunion, who, in a move shocking Decis nationalists, especially the Subterran Axis, was granted an Imperial title as Delegate.

Bernard Sunion, as a Jevoan, is an instinctive peacemaker, having sought time and time again to defuse the situation between the Aestorian Commonwealth and other regional powers, to such an extent that there has been suggestion that a Peace-maker class Carrier should be named after him. However, as of yesterday the Aestorian Foreign Secretary, the Maharaja Kazpia, has requested an urgent meeting to discuss the current cyberwar, with delegates from the 19+8 states (including Bvordexa, Pania, the United Braemar States, Jevo, Ailanor, the Imperial Caliphate, Pollia, and New Austrailanor) and the Panessos and Decis Governments currently meeting in Unity City, with disruption to external internet networks and trade top of the agenda.

It is expected the parties will issue a joint communique at the end of the summit referencing their shared values, and, if the Maharaja Kazpia has his way, an ultimatum.
