I... dunno? Again, I thought a lot of this would be decided in the roleplay. I rather do not like deciding how a roleplay is going to go before it even starts. I much prefer just letting things happen as they happen.

Otherwise, what's the point of making it a roleplay, and why not write a story instead?

I have a few ideas how to start out, but other than that...

I figured I'd start with a description of the Apocalypse happening. The moments right up to it, the portals opening, the description of how the portals "xenoform" the area, and some descriptions of the nasties that start popping out of them.

I suppose in hindsight, I might need to give out some actual descriptions of some of these nasties before we start, so you all have stuff to go on for your own posts. Crap. And here I was hoping to surprise everyone.

My idea was a Benevolent Corpotcracy/semi-topia of atheist ex Amish, doomsday preppers, atypical wide eyed heroes/teens with powers, and remnants of the Old World govt and military based around Niagra falls.

It certainly doesn't help that there are basically countless different kinds of monsters in DNM, so... that does make it a bit tricky. ^^;

And I understand. If you want, you could take over a RL nation for this. I think that's what Danceria is wanting to do?

Well, based off a real nation. But as you said, BALKANIZE ME BABY! So a small state near some iron, natural gas, lakes, and farmland should be okay for self sufficiency. Just gotta watch out for what's coming out of Toronto, Detroit and NYC.

Or just be an Angel worshipping Amish super state.

But as for the first portal, I actually do have an explanation for how, and why, it opens. The other portals are opened in response to the first portal. And that's what causes the Apocalypse(s).

Location, timing, abundance and severity of the portals is key to how long the CCLN (Confederated City-states of Lacustrine Niagara) has before it goes the way of the Dodo.

Also if it can boast having the first observed peaceful interaction between deities of different pantheons.

Since we seemed to have some miscommunication over my intended tone earlier. I hope it helps! (Yes it is kind of MN-centric in the description, but some of the information in there should cover the tone of DNM in general.)

Hey, uh... I do have a serious question for everyone. Since DNM is very much in the "hard R" territory, and I understand NS would prefer to keep things "PG-13", I know that some things will need to be toned down, or not actually shown, as explained in my OP for this thread.

Thing is, I am a tad fuzzy on where the line is exactly. Obviously, there is a line; I'm not arguing that. I merely want to make sure I can do this while avoiding stepping on the feet of any mods. I'm not necessarily trying to push the envelope here, though I would like to do this with as few alterations as possible. I do understand it may have to be altered a good bit, though.

Anyone have any suggestions?

If by "ancient history", you mean pre-Roman Empire, that works; so long as nothing particularly concrete was left behind. (e.g. there being oral, or even written history of it is fine. There being supposedly magical artifacts is okay, as long as almost nobody alive knows how to make them do their magic. There being anything around that could make serious historians rubberneck over and go "what do we have here?" would be a "nope".) Regarding anything magical from before the Apocalypse (and there were some magical things from before then, but...): The people who believe in them are not taken seriously by the greater public. Magic, as a whole, isn't just sufficiently advanced, it is sufficiently hidden. Not by some kind of "enforced masquerade", or even a "fog" that conceals magic from "muggle eyes", but by the magic users themselves. They don't want that kind of attention from non-magic folk, generally speaking. At least, they haven't wanted that attention for a long time. (You can safely blame the rise of Abrahamic religion for that, and later on, secularism for that matter. No mage wants to be hunted down for practicing witchcraft, nor would a demon want world-wide attention that would make it difficult to operate here anymore.)

If that isn't sufficient, as stated by Bengal, you could try RPing as a RL nation. If you want, I mean...

Go Hokou Shin Ken, change the colour of the blood to white for comedic gold. Censor smoking. Have copulation refer to as "really randy hecking". Lampshade it to the end.
