Bãi Cạnh Island

The Dutch forces continued their advance on Fort Delacouronne, their tanks firing their shells at the stronghold. They were shocked to see that the Deritain’s had artillery, though they had known they would have anti-tank guns after the Battle of An Giang. The tanks advanced quickly, mostly due to their light armor, but the land around them was becoming a firestorm as the Deritains set fire to the jungle and bombarded the beaches. The Infantry in the jungle, meet with a wall of fire, started to retreat back onto the beach.

Several miles north, the 39th Platoon was still scrambling to meet up with the rest of the invasion force.

Soga observed the battle with mild amusement. The Dutch appeared to have severely underestimated her forces on the Islamd, and this was just a fraction of it. Not to meant the Deritains had done the opposite, thinking that there were more of the invaders than there actually were.

“Mankayi.”

“Yes General?”

“I want you to fire on those tanks. Destroy them as efficiently as possible. And once they are destroyed, send in Jauffret’s regiment to clean up the rest of the Dutch.”

“As you wish General.”

The anti-tank guns, deciding to increased the chances of hitting the fast moving tank, moved quickly to take them out one by one, firing at the leading tank.

One of the tanks exploded as several shells smashed into it. It stopped in its track and was engulf with smoke, but half of its crew were able to escaped the doomed assault vehicle before it erupted.

Meanwhile the other three tanks continued their assault on the fortress, speeding past their fallen comrades. The infantry were now supported. By the rest of the invasion force, though a little over a hundred were now lost to the artillery of gun fight in the jungle. Fewer were injured and were being taken back to the landing boats as the rest headed for Fort Delacouronne.

Alexandre bursted into Aki’s apartments in the palace. The young daimyo was looking over himself in the mirror as a young pretty attendant was changing his bandages. Alexandre had to say, Aki looked much better with only one eye.

As Aki spotted him, Alexandre had to hold back a laugh, he jumped up and hid behind the attendant.

“What do you want you mad man?”

Alexandre rolled his eyes.

“Listen cyclops. You are going to send the Dokura Army into Seidang, or I won’t just pluck out your other eye. I’ll cut your tongue out so you can’t run screaming about it. Got it?”

Aki gulped. The towering prince was a madman as far as he was concerned. And madmen could not be negotiated with.

“F-fine.”

Alexandre smiled. He spoke in a way that was sweet, but clearly unapologetic.

“Sorry about your eye.”

The anti-tank gun switch around to focus on the new leading tank, coordinating their attack together. They counted down.

FIRE!

They shot at the new leading tank and moved instantly to the next tank in the line. Then the next tank.

Meanwhile the artillery fired on the infantry on the open beaches, carpeting them in explosive shells.

The Dutch started to panic. They were being outgunned and as they struggled to get through the firestorm of the beach. Their advance was halted and their tanks picked off one by one. They started to fall back from the fortress, back towards their boats. Messages were being sent to Cà Cái for assistance in retreating from the island. General Hautjie however refused to be bested by the Deritains and simply demanded that his soldiers press on, regardless of the cost of victory.

Mankayi ordered Jauffret’s Regiment out of Fort Delacouronne and marched onto the beach, cutting through the stretch of sand littered with the twisted burning wreckage of the Dutch tanks and the carnage of their fallen soldiers. They marched under the supportive cover up of the artillery as they meet the Dutch and opened fire.

Day 114

The Battle of Fort Delacouronne came to an end as the Dutch forces, seeing even more soldiers from the fortress coming to meet them and taking heavy losses and with General Hautjie’s outragous orders to continue the doomed assault, the soldiers had to take matters into their own hands. The only thing they could do at this point was surrendered. One unfortunate young man, a mere private, Justen Botteriete, was selected to lead the surrender, waving a white flag in trying to get the attention of the Deritains.

Phan Rong An, Seidang
Day 114

Seidang was in the midst of a crisis.

While the Battle of An Giang has ended in their favor, various new problems seem to be arriving across the nation by the hour.

The first problem was the utter lack of water that was in the country. It was the dry season in Seidang and there had been no typhoons for months since the rainy season. That, combined with the heat of the nation’s summer, was turning the entire country into little more than a dried husk. It was worst in the southern half of the nation as the rivers that flowed from the rich interior dried up. The mighty Hoadao River moving only half of its usual amount of water and its sister, the Ngoc Thổnhĩkỳ was moving only a third of its usual amount of water.

The Sekong River, the freshest and hub of commerce in the eastern part of the nation on the other side of the Chu Vương Mountains was almost completely gone, left to being only a mere six inches deep. In Paphon, Phan Rong An and Cà Cái there were large scale protests as hundreds of thousands called for more water to be disrupted to the people.

Unfortunately, President Hoàng was forced to decided between supplying water to the people or to the army.

The President chose the Army.

The response had become explosive. As the grass and trees died across the southern half of the nation, over a thousand people followed suite. This only made the situation worse as more and more people demanded aid from the government.

President Hoàng was in the midst of trying to figure out how to deal with the crisis when another arose.

Word quickly reached Phan Rong An of the fact that the Yoannes army had soldiers who were pillaging the village’s of the south, who were already suffering from the intense drought. Then, there was the horrid news of the murder of 38 men and the rape of 91 of Seidang’s women. The population of the nation was infuriated.

In Paphon, the key city in the route into the south that held the only road to everything south and east of the Chu Vương mountains, Mayor Võ Việt Cường has seized control of the city with the police and had kicked out the foreign armies stationed there and constructed with alerting efficiently a wall ringing the city. It was made up of cement, standing 4 meters high and blocked off every street into the city. Across the Ngoc Thổnhĩkỳ, Võ launched chains and nets to prevent ships from getting into the city’s large harbor. Of its millions of inhabitants, the vast majority were in favor of Võ’s policy. At 9:45 pm, the Council of the city declared themselves, the Independent State (Autonomous Region) of the City of Paphon, acting as a temporary government in the city for the duration of the. They appoint the mayor as their provisional executive, or president.

The newly acclaimed President Võ quickly made his intentions clear.

”People of Paphon. It has become clear that the protection of Seidang’s people can no longer be guaranteed by her government. This War is one of good cause. But it can not take precedence over the good of the people. President Hoàng has failed us in that respect , choosing his armies and over the good of Seidang’s people. Foreigners clutter our cities and rape our women, kill our men. What is next? The Enslavement of our children? No I say. No more. The Republic is a star, and we shall follow it, but we shall do what is needed for the good of Seidang and her people

President Võ has been planning his little coup for weeks. Võ, unlike Hoàng would not tolerate the foreign invaders, and he did not prioritize the war over the civilians.

And Võ was not alone. Across the southern half of the country, protests and riots broke out. And then came the straw that effectively broke the camel’s back. President Hoàng, seeing over 500,000 people marching on the Presidential Headquarters in Phan Rong An, ordered the cancellation of the National Policy allowing public protests.

Violence was rampant across the country as civilians turned on each other for water, the army for anger and the foreigners out of revenge. Cocktail bombings and shootings increased and the Seidanese Army was forced to virtually occupy and enforce martial law. The Yoannes soldiers were the ones targeted the most with a vengeance, and without mercy, as smaller groups raided the moving force and an independent paramilitary forces rose up and consolidated themselves and halted their movement and ordered their immediate surrender, or to face death.

Day 115

In Phan Rong An, President Hoàng, Vice President Sái Chiang Vu, General La Tường Anh and Minister of State Đỗ Nghĩa Hòa discusses the future of the nation.

“Mr. President,” Vice President Sái began, “There is great concern. The drought, the actions of the foreigners and now the outlawing of public protest... it may be too much.”

“Bah!” General La rolled his eyes at Sái. Sái had always been too passive for La’s liking. “These protesters are traitors. They are breaking the law and should be shot where they stand!”

“The war effort is important,” Sái scowled, “but it is threatening to tear the republic apart. The majority of the nation lives in the south. We can not afford to have them revolt.”

“Revolt?” President Hoàng gasped.

“Ridiculous. Not in a hundred and seventy years have we had an actual revolt. It is impossible!”

“I beg to differ.”

“Sir,” the Minister of State spoke up. “I am sorry to have to do this. But I must mention, what if your re-election?”

President Hoàng scowled. So absorbed he was in the war and this crisis, he’d forgotten the up coming election. Usually it would have been an easy win, but now? With his popularity so low? With so much falling apart around him?

“I want the National Diet to give me emergency powers. Suspend the election for next year. We can not afford to be fractured. Arrest those who opposite the greater good of the Republic. Remind them of the Army meant to defend them. ”

Sái looked at President Hoàng in stunned silenced. The general and the minister both nodded. Sái could see it. This was one of those great moments in history were everything that comes next will be traced back to what if at this moment. And in that moment, in that flip of a switch second, President Hoàng had effectively made himself Dictator of Seidang.

Day 118

Governor Quách Gia Cần, much like Võ in Paphon, had, effectively taken direct control over much of the island of Sudào Bac, which was still suffering from the drought but had far more water, at least in the city of Cà Tàu, than much of the country. Using his control of the island's water supply, Governor Quách had turned Sudào Bac into his own little fiefdom. And with so much control, Governor Quách looked to join the so called
Miễnphí Movement, those seeking to both end the war and remove the foreigners from Seidang's soil. Governor Quách ordered the soldiers on the island, now virtually his own personal army, to taken on high alert.

Nagakita, Asakura, Derita
Day 120

The Duke of Aumale looked over a map of Seidang, a stack of reports he had just read next to it. He had to get moving, quickly.

It appeared they’d found their sling.

Prince Alexandre scowled as he watched the Amperiale Army leave Nagakita, lead by Jérémy Vallotton, and, ugh, Aki Dokura.

25,000 soldiers were heading for Seidang, plans said they would be arriving in hours as they were shipped off. Prince Aki has relented and had released his army to be assimilated into the imperial forces. And then he had decided that he was personally going to be joining the army.

As Alexandre stood next to his brothers, the Duke of Normandy and Prince Antoine, saluting to the the marching soldiers going to fight for the Celestial Empire and their royalist cause, he scowled at Aki as he marched pass. Aki now bore an brand new eye that sparkled with the emblem of Asakura on it. He glared right back at Alexandre. He was doing exactly what Alexandre wanted to do more than anything, to fight, to serve in the military. And he was doing it all to spite him!

Alexandre snapped at him.

“Careful Prince Aki, you might accidentally die with some semblance of honor.”

Cà Cái, Seidang

A short few hours later, the Amperiale Army and half a dozen militaryships were just off the coast of Cà Cái, where General Hautjie has organized the assault on Bãi Cạnh and the Battle of Fort Delacouronne. They had over twenty-five thousand soldiers ready to hand. But they hadn’t come to attack just yet.

Ōyama Harada ordered the immediate surrender of the city and the forces stationed there, in exchange for water and foodstuffs. If not, they would attack.

Off the coast of Siktaya

The Victorieux was off the coast of Ratong, along with the Annabars, several Monarchs ready to take flight. The Duke of Aumale, much like Harada had given Governor Doãn a choice, though the Duke was harsher. His message was simple.

“Surrender. Or Burn.”

Cà Cái, Seidang

General Hautjie, seeing the forces of the Deritains, did what he felt was the only thing he could do after his defeat at Fort Delacouronne. He ordered a full retreat of the Dutch Army in Cà Cái and ran full force towards Paphon, the General unaware of the on going battle in Paphon. His plan was to let the Deritains take Cà Cái temporally and then with held, beat them back in a repeating the Battle of An Giang.

The Dutch in general were going under some leadership and coordination issues. They, like the Seidanese had elections coming up and the Empress had thrown herself into focusing on keeping her favorite, George Asbury, as prime minister least he be replaced by the hated Frederick Noorden. I’m doing so, she had forgotten to respond to the message from Yoannes. The Empress has never been one for war, and was sure that Hautjie would figure things however.

Ratong, Seidang
Day 124

Governor Doãn was dealing with a crisis when the message from the Duke of Aumale arrived. Siktaya had been badly hit by the drought, their fields were brown and brittle, the island’s creeks and streams having dried up. Over a third of people on the island lacked access to water. The actions of the people on the mainland and on Sudào Bac has disrupted contact between Ratong and Phan Rong An, to whom Governor Doãn continued to swear his loyalty to.

“Governor.” One of his aid said, informing him of the Duke of Aumale’s threat. Governor Doãn scoffed. It had been weeks since the Battle of Ratong. The Deritains has failed at their invasion of the mainland. They would fail here.

“Tell His Grace that my answer is simple. I will never surrender. He will never take this island as long as I am still breathing.”

Off the coast of Siktaya

The Duke of Aumale looked over the message from Governor Doãn. He sighed and tossed it aside.

“Very well Governor. I suppose then I must snuff out your breath.”

The Monarchs took off from the Annabars and flew fast and low towards Siktaya. They were in their element with this mission. The Duke of Aumale was not one to leave a problem be. He was a smart and. Strategic thinker, a pupil of the former Grand Admiral Mohammad, who had been known as the White Fox do to his cunning. He would take a enemy’s weakness and exploit it to its fullest extent.

Taking advantage of the drought that was crippling Seidang, the Duke of Aumale decided that the most efficient way to get rid of the old guard was to set them alight. He would not launch an invasion just to lose more lives. He would reduce the enemy to dust and trend over the ashes.

The Monarchs zipped over Ratong and dropped their bombs. They were firebombs, designed to cause much destruction themselves, but to wash their target in flames.

The squadrons spilt up, most of them heading south and in law to the countryside of the island, setting the dried fields of Siktaya ablaze.

The rest went for the governor’s mansion, firing rockets on the build and the surrounding hillside.

Ratong, Seidang
Day 124

“Governor! There are incoming fighters.” Governor Doãn’s aid informed him.

“Are their ant landing ships spotted?”

“No sir. There doesn’t appear to be a landing force coming.”

“Of course there is a landing force. These planes must simply be a distraction.”

“Governor,” another aide walked into his office nervously. “There ha: been attack in the countryside, though there haven’t been any death, but the fields are in flames. We-“

“Wait did you just say?” The Governor whirled on the aid.

“They are attack the fields. The people are just fine, but with the drought, the flames are spreading quickly. The fire department is tried to combat it air, but-“

“It’s is not an invasion.” Governor Doãn gasped, speaking more to himself. He turned to his window. “Đó là sự hủy diệt.”

The governor’s mansion exploded as enemy rockets crashed into the building, killing the Governor and much of the mansion’s occupants almost immediately as it tore through the old building. Flames shot up from the building like a torch into the sky.

Phan Rong An, Seidang
Day 125

Panic was spreading on the edges of the Republic. The people of Cà Cái and those in the Sekong River Valley, driven by desperation, had welcomed the royalists if only for the sake of the much needed water for the region. They had even turned against their Republican forces who enforced the strict rules of President Hoàng, for the help of the royalists. The Army had been forced to flee north into the mountains.

The Dutch and Fakratans seemed to be stumbling around aimlessly, twinkling their thumbs outside of Paphon, while the battle of the city had virtually come to a stalemate as a mix of militia and civilian guerrilla fighters strangled any attempt for the foreigners to move through the narrow roads of the concrete and metal jungle.

In Siktaya, more bad news arrived, the island was on fire. The winds had carried the flames caused by the Deritains in their bombings and had spread a wildfire sweeping across the island. Ratong’s fire department were, through drastic measures of tearing down houses and building been able to prevent the city from falling to the flames, but This left them trapped between fire and the enemy. The island’s council (acting on behalf of the vacant office of the Governor) with the beloved Doãn’s death leaving them distraught and him a martyr, debated surrender and survival.

It was not all terrible news however. The efforts of humanitarian assistance had started to work its magic on the far western side of the country, and though much the damage here hasn’t been as great, it was quickly recovering.

President Hoàng was in the midst of penning a thank you message to the humanitarian assistance people and the Field Marshal Coanda for their help in this time of crisis when suddenly everything turned blurry. President Hoàng gasped and put down his pen and touched his eyelids. His fingers shook and felt a sudden ripple through his body, the left side of his face feeling numb.

“Châuhong!” The President yelled, calling for his personal secretary. “Châuhong, I-!” President Hoàng stood up as he continued to yell. “Châuhong, get help—“ He chokes, slurring his words and he collapsed. Châuhong Thùy, a young woman who had worked for the president for the last two years, ran into the president’s office, finding the seventy year old man laying on the ground. She screamed in horror. The President of Seidang had had stroke.
