I am very busy nowadays due to my school and all that but I will sign in once or twice a week to work on stuffs such as the military history of the Isles. It would be a great pleasure to listen to your ideas, fellow TWIslanders.

In the Military History of the Isles, I have added a few battles of Isles history and intend to add many more. I hope that we all can work together for perhaps one of the bloodiest conflicts in the Isles history and use it on our nation-building goals.

For now, we should preferably focus on medieval and some ancient wars of TWI.

Heavenly War of Hangates

Image

"And there was war in heaven: the great beasts fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought back."

Two centuries after the formation of the Khas-Kirat Empire, the Khas-Kirati tribes - once bounded to just their homeland Kaski island - had control over a vast territory spreading across the Isles. However, the Khas-Kirat Empire also garnered long-time rivals, in particular, the Holy Empire of Caber.

In the aftermath of the Yakthumba Civil War (1094-1098), Chemjong Hang, the Sixth Mahang of Khas-Kirat Empire, decided to grant larger tribes with their own semi-independent hangates to ease administration. His successor Kulung Hang continued the administrative reforms to keep the Khas-Kirati realm united. However troubles started brewing when Yengdem Hangma was crowned the next Mahang of the Khas-Kirat Empire in 1168.

The Xiangu Hangate of Wellsia had monopoly over trade between the Mesder Sea and the Southern Sea. The Xiangu clans employed Aziri privateers to disrupt trade supply of all other nations, including the other hangates in the Southern Sea. Despite repeated pleas by the rulers of the Kilat Hangate in Samudera, the Kheno-Madu Hangate in Linaviar and the Kachee Sultanate, Yengdem Hangma refused to intervene, knowing that the trade power of the Xiangu clans and use of privateers would benefit the Khas-Kirat Empire overall. Thus, one of the bloodiest conflicts in the history of the Isles began. The Heavenly War of the Hangates, that would involve almost all Isles nations directly or indirectly, and have death casualties of over 2 million began in February 6, 1196.

Working Concepts

And the great dragon was cast out, the evil beast that threatened the whole world: the dragon was cast out forever, and his minions were to wander forever these accursed lands.

  • The War in Xiangu lands - Throughout much of this bloody war, I imagine much of the battles taking place in Xiangu Hangate (Wellsia). This rich hangate positioned between the West (Mesder and other areas) and the East (Southern Sea, Gael, Kajvu regions, etc) was a trade power and it employed pirates - even if that meant destroying ships of others hangates. When other hangates took their complaints to Yengdem Hangma, she refused to do anything and instead said - "Solve it out yourselves" (or something akin to that). The other disgruntled hangates start this war by invading Xiangu lands and the Khas-Kirat Empire's huge army is engaged there. Other nations (Caber, Keomora, etc) are bound to take advantage of the fact and plan their invasions of Kaski island (modern-day mainland Athara Magarat). The Xiangu Hangate changed sides in the middle of the war when their hang was captured and killed and his cousin replaced him. This changed the entire balance of the war for Xiangu Hangate was arguably the most powerful hangate (in terms of military, economy and whatnot); and the Khas-Kirat Empire was forced to seek allies.
  • Enter Noronica - On the other hand, a war party of the Khas-Kirat Empire comes in contact with the powerful Noronican Kingdom. The two nations quickly became allies when Queen Magaidh and Emay Hang (brother of Selling Hang, the then Mahang of the Khas-Kirat Empire) were married. The Kingdom of Noronica entered the war as an ally of the Khas-Kirat Empire. Noronican soldiers would take part in campaigns in Kachee and Xiangu lands. However, the Noronicans were to enter too late into the war. Despite being on the side that lost, the demise of the Khas-Kirat Empire meant the gradual rise of Noronica as a great power of the Isles.
  • Successor States of the Empire - In the aftermath of the great war that lasted for nearly two centuries, the Khas-Kirat Empire was disintegrated forever. Instead 18 different small hanagtes rose in Kaski island as "direct successors" of the Empire. These hanagtes were always fighting against one another whereas the hangates that had fought against the Khas-Kirat Empire themselves would gradually decline - giving rise to various "indirect successor states" that would still dominate the political situation of the Isles for several more centuries to come - with Linavian Empire and an unstoppable trade giant in the form of Xiangu Hangate (free of paying heavy taxes and trading goods to Khas-Kirat Empire) being the two most prominent examples.
  • Really? You fought in the Heavenly War? - Historians still debate over which nations were involved in this long war. While significant battles did take place in nations such as Townside or Negarakita, they were neutral and independent for most of the time. I also need many different kingdoms and states of those times to have been involved in the war directly or indirectly.
  • Modern implications - I would really like to know how your nations would see this war today. In modern-day Athara Magarat, it ranges from being horrified of the death casualties to some blaming this war for everything bad that has happened ever since from Khas-Kirati people becoming minorities almost all nations of the Isles to portraying all generals and Mahangs during this 185 years time period as demons who brought nothing but death and destruction. Rarely do they have statues or portraits of Yengdem Hangma and Selling Hang even in Arun Valley - the cultural center of Athara Magarat.
  • Refugees with rifles - Okay, not exactly rifles...but the Khas-Kirati tribes, now spread out across the Isles more so than ever due to the instability in Kaski island in the aftermath, would go on to introduce gunpowder, advanced mathematics, astronomy, shipbuilding, etc to places they would call their new homes. This was most prominently visible in Vaenland (modern-day Vancouvia).

A pivotal implication of the War of the Heavenly Hangates would be the development of the nobility in the Ilse. During and after the war, Lortik mercenaries rich with plunder bought estates and began settling down, and taking titles and control of Ilsan territories. This ended up weakening the Lortik empire first for the Magarati Colonial Realms Empire, and then for Maximilien I.

Kaski Island Wars

Image

"Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and no town or house divided against itself will stand."

After the city of Liba Hang, capital of the Empire of Magarat, was captured by Miklanian-allied troops from various nations in the Imperial War, any hint of national unity the dictatorship had kept was gone. The Empire of Magarat lost their holdings in San Montagna and other nations directly during the occupation and just two years later Kaski island was divided was once again. And again into 18 different hangates like in the era of constant wars after the dissolution of the Khas-Kirat Empire.

The 18 hangates in the divided Kaski island (they were more like city-states to be exact but each had a hang ruling over it) were as follows:

Image
Not pictured: Sultanate of Kachee

  • 1. Liba Hangate (comprising of modern-day city of New Libang and areas surrounding it plus Myagdi Island - the dominant ethnic group in this hangate were the tribes of the predominately Whindist Christian Four Kham Horde plus the Chhantyal)
  • 2. Hangate of Sinja (the dominant power in western Kaski island and had Khas plus Taurot majority)
  • 3. Chuli Hangate (the highest altitude hangate in the Chuli mountain range; they had to fend against aggression by the Western Tamsaling and Marubhumi Hangates)
  • 4. Marubhumi Hangate (centered around the Marubhumi desert near the central Chuli mountain range; and the fact that the ruling Tharu landlords called zamindars treated the hangate as their personal property is cited as the reason why it was the first to be toppled by communist guerrillas)
  • 5. Western Tamsaling Hangate (the dominant power in central Chuli mountain range; saw themselves as the spiritual successors of the Tamsaling Hangate that their Tamang ancestors had long gone founded in Linaviar - it is often alleged that they gave free passes to communist guerrillas to remove their enemies - the Tharu zamindars of Marubhumi Hangate; although they themselves were highly friendly to capitalist states at other times)
  • 6. Hangate of Newa (arguably the smallest hangate, they were centered around the little island west of Sinja and a trade power among the divided states almost to merchant state status; the Newa people were among the most friendliest to capitalist countries in suppressing the rising communist threat)
  • 7. Hangate of Tiwe Sivn (this Doman-majority hangate in the northeast was mostly neutral in the border wars its neighbors often engaged in and the also unaffected by the communist insurgency until the last stages - they were perhaps the most stable hangate in the chaos of a divided Kaski island)
  • 8. Sultanate of Kachee (another error naming since the Kachee as an island is not even in Mesder but next to Charbagnia...the only notable factor about this hangate was that it was the most populous among the hangates and Muslim)
  • 9. Santhal Hanagte (they were prevalent in the southwest and often victims of aggression by their more powerful neighbors for almost their entire existence)
  • 10. Hangate of Khumbuwan (they were the first hangate to covertly adopt communism and export it...most of the communist guerrilla groups thrived within the borders of this hangate on the eastern foothills of the Chuli mountain range)
  • 11. Second Tamuwan Hangate (this Tamu-dominated hangate was known for being aggressive about its borders; the hang prided himself as a successor and envisioned himself as a unifying force for Kaski island but was assassinated by his own communist-influenced brother)
  • 12. New Forest Hangate (the Magarati Nyssics were the majority in the city state of New Forest and led this southeastern hangate)
  • 13. Western Linavian Hangate (this hangate in southwest was actually formed by Linvian tribes to protect themselves)
  • 14. Mesderi Sanggar Hangate (the Samuderan tribes living in Kaski island incorporated various Ipachi tribes of Mesder by allowing them to immigrate to their state; leading to a population boom that ultimately led to instability)
  • 15. Akari Hangate (the southern Kemori tribes inhabiting in Kaski island formed the bulk of Akari Hangate with a noticeable minority from Khas-Kirati tribes like Thakali and Four Kham Horde, etc)
  • 16. Central Hangate (contrary to its name; this hangate was dominant in northern parts of Kaski island and composed of Lortiks, Vucarians, Ipachi and smaller Khas-Kirati tribes being buffer states to aggressive hangates of the east and the west)
  • 17. Mun Hangate (the seat of the High Kumari; the so-called Living Goddess's state was untouched by much of the war but it too agreed to join the Athara Magarati Demcratic Hangate in a referendum)
  • 18. Hangate of Arun Valley (the dominant hangate of the east; it was a center of culture and arts until the takeover by communist guerrilas)

These 18 different hangates were constantly at each other's throats (except for sometimes making common cause or exceptions such as the Mun Hangate and the smaller powers at the island). However by mid-way through the wars, they were actually fighting various communist groups breeding in the territory of the Hangate of Khumbuwan. In 1963, however the petty reasons for the wars changed as the Marubhumi Hangate fell to communism and it joined the folks of Khumbuwan as a communist dictatorship despite having a hang and all that. And a thank you for allowing communist groups and their official army to enter Marubhumi, the folks in power at Khumbuwan turned Western Tamsaling Hangate into their puppet and enforced communist ideology. By 1965, the three "communist hangates" (calling themselves People's Civic Congress) openly announced a People's War to unite all of the islands through communism...Needless to say that sent shock waves among leaders of the other states; who called in foreign support.

Finally, a referendum was held in May 1976 with mediation by foreign powers. The result was the reunification of the divided nation and the formation of the Athara Magarati Democratic Hangate (aside from the Sultanate of Kachee) through Comprehensive Peace Accords in which the communist guerrillas promised to give up armed revolution. The People's Civic Congress became a democratic-socialist political party. A few other parties also popped up they could not compete against the People's Civic Congress and their candidate Lil Prasad Armaja. He was elected as the first democratically elected Hang of Athara Magarati Democratic Hangate on August 9, 1977 and helped push for rapid economic growth, which earned him a reelection in 1980.
