OOC: Hello again, Nationstates. It's been a while. I'm a returning player who decided to try something different rather than picking up with one of his old nations. Since people scared away all the terrorists, I think it's time that a new organization emerge, one that doesn't god-mode like most of its predecessors. In all the time I saw various criminal groups played on the boards, from communist insurgents to pirates to people who just liked to blow stuff up for no real reason, I never saw any eco-terrorists, despite the fact that there are some nations willing to violently defend the environment. Enter the Ecostasis Society.
IC: Excerpt from a recent International News Network online story:
In recent weeks, reports have circulated of mysterious men and women appearing at environmental rallies across the globe. These people were often charismatic and passionate orators who stood up to give a single speech or perform a single act of defiance before vanishing into the crowds. Several have been arrested, and any who were not released within three days committed suicide by a variety of means, most commonly cyanide tablets contained in hollow teeth.
Despite the fact that seven such deaths have already occurred, the frequency of the appearances of members of what was assumed to be some sort of internet-based cult movement actually increased dramatically until late last week, when an estimated three million pamphlets - all of them written on pieces of trash - were distributed across approximately three-hundred cities; in total, about twenty languages were represented. In addition, emails containing the same message were sent to countless governments across the world; when traced, it was discovered that all of them originated from various internet cafes.
A transcript of the message is below.
Your planet is in peril, and it's up to you to save it!
Global warming, deforestation, trash accumulation; these things seem distant to everyday men and women. With so much to distract us, and effective efforts by corporations that depend on our continued consumption of their goods to cover up the truth about our environmental impact, few of us think about the situation on a daily basis. Every so often, an enterprising journalist provides us with a huge number, a number far too remote to mean anything personal. We say "oh, that's terrible" and go back to doing other things.
Yet the problems facing our planet are personal for every human being, and it's important that all of us understand that. The world produces an estimated 5 billion tons of household trash every year, or around thirteen million seven hundred thousand tons per day. Suppose the average house weighs 500 tons, and four people inhabit the average house. That's enough trash to bury every house in Richmond, Virginia, and all of it has been produced within only 24 hours.
That frightening statistic doesn't even include industrial waste, or the fact that we may well choke on our increasingly toxic atmosphere long before we're buried in rubbish. If we persist in the direction megacorporations have set for us, we will soon flood our coasts and be launched into a new ice age. Humans will become extinct; Earth will eventually heal itself, but we won't be around to see it. Obviously, there has to be change. None of us want to die, and by extension none of us want to be murdered by corporate greed.
Unfortunately, the peaceful rallies held around the world by those who have seen the truth rarely change anything, and we're running out of time to reverse what's happening. We need to be able to put pressure on the root causes of this problem: corporations and governments that callously destroy the environment. We need to be true agents of change, and that requires a more forceful approach. Word will sweep through the world's cities by internet and mouth; when it comes to you, help us save the planet. Donations of cash and supplies of any sort will give us the ability to apply the pressure that leads to change. If you're willing to take the plunge and stand with us, power to you.
- The Ecostasis Society
Information has indeed spread through the internet; the Ecostasis Society has set up a global network of secret drop-points and communication channels that allow it to contact and receive supplies from sympathizers with very little chance of detection. Exactly how it plans to "apply pressure" remains unknown, but firearms, ammunition, and explosives have been among the items donated. The organization continues to send emails to various governments requesting more large-scale support.
