Christoslavians only friends are the oceans
A saying with historical significance in Christoslavia, as old as the country itself, even the unofficial motto of the Imperial Christoslavian Navy. Since its inception, Christoslavia's neighbors were anything but neighborly. Surrounded on all sides by hostile states, the syndicates of Christoslavia turned to the seas for dominance, to expand an empire and exert influence in an environment where it was easier to assert one's claims than on land with the most aggressive of neighbors.
Even with the saying, it was never all that true. If it wasn't the Chen with frequent border incursions, abductions of citizens, and acts of terror, then it was constant pirate raids on the coast, on Christoslavian flagged ships, life and property. The Board realized early on that in the lawlessness of Aurus, you had to play the game to survive. Cutting back door deals with pirates in exchange for money or protection, in return for their loyalty, was a key tactic in the nations early history. The promise of intervention on behalf of anti-imperialist forces in efforts to slowly remove Wankan, Ummayad, and Aemen influence from the continent and surrounding seas, while replacing them with Christoslavia itself, proved equally strategic. Whether it was by treaty, paying pirates to raid rival ships, granting letters of marque, or otherwise dastardly and suspicious means, the Empire expanded its grip by working simultaneously in the shadows and in broad daylight to secure Aurus and the Aeged and Estour.
As time went on and diplomacy became a more viable (and sensible) tactic, situations changed. Soon the regime found itself surrounded again by communist and socialist aggressor's, and so the regime maintained a policy of striking first in oft covert means to deter the inevitable red expansion, their existence a threat to a methodically cultivated system of power, part kleptocracy, part oligarchy, part pseudo-capitalist tyranny. The mere existence of neighboring states threatened to collapse the society as a whole.
Even with the socialist inspired revolution in the 1970's and the rise of SUPREME OVERLORD, Christoslavia's neighbors remained hostile elements to a nation they viewed as exploitative and illegitimate. Even ideologically similar states remained constant threats to the integrity of Christoslavia and defense was pursued more heavily than ever.
One state, more than any other, always stood out in terms of sheer aggression and backward savagery, the Chen Empire. The Emperor and his lineage had for centuries refused to modernize, never yielding to the influence of outsiders to preserve their grip over ever aspect of life in the nation, doing whatever was necessary to preserve power first and foremost. In the Christoslavian Civil War, the Chen took advantage of a new and fragile chaotic state to end an illegitimate presence, and failed. In the years following, two more border wars in the 1980's and 1990's again tried to reclaim "lost lands" from a power they claimed tried to subvert their system. Since the last war, tensions remain high between the two empires, with diplomatic back channels and no "official" communications being the only means of avoiding outright war.
After a spate of calm, lulling those on both sides into thinking that hostilities had finally died down, border incursions picked up once again. Weekly reports of artillery exchanges, or of several squadrons of soldiers crossing the border striking government positions or kidnapping civilians, only to retreat back across the border, then followed by similar retaliatory actions; came in droves. Interior Ministry and Military stations border wide remained on high alert, contingencies issued from the highest chains of command to the lowest ranks, war seemed inevitable, or did it?
The Chen played the game. For too long Christoslavia had been focused on its foreign commitments, in Ummayah, Mamluqstan, New Phallia, Wanka, Tenochte, Gauliscia. The Chen Emperor knew this, he knew to test how well prepared his most dangerous neighbors were in the face of their extended commitments. What came next was only anticipated in nightmare scenarios. Like a sweeping flood, on the night of August 4th, they came. Were the defenders prepared? To an extent. They never imagined the scale, the ferocity of their assault, the tactics they hadn't planned on. Intelligence had failed and people were dying. In a desperate reorganization of forces to the front line, to relieve beleaguered and overwhelmed border units, SUPREME OVERLORD and his cabinet had to ask themselves, how could we have let this happen, and what now?
The remains of some 360,000 Interior Ministry soldiers, gendarmes, and military personnel who have not already been routed have already begun to implement Contingency Operation Divide and Conquer, retreating to pre-planned areas of resistance from which to hold out and stage counter-attacks, or at least slow the Chen advance, until a significant force can be mustered to the front lines. While ready in their traps and defenses, it appears the Chen are soon to overwhelm the battered ad hoc 4th Frontier Army. Now their only friend is time.
