Abroad MY Timberscout

Prime Minister Carlyle frowned at the wide expanse of sea before his eyes, a small notepad beside him. He still hadn't fully recovered to his top shape after the mild fever. The effects on himself were of little importance, however, as what mattered was the end to the conflict that spawned from an inability to compromise of the participants.

"Your Excellency, we're almost there." His aide said firmly.

"Oh."

"Harbor Master, this is Motor Yacht Timberscout, transporting the Oakwood Landing Prime Minister delegation for the summit, we request permission to along side."

Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa
Bandaraya Kerajaan, Sekangkang Kera
30 July, 2017
10:00 a.m.

Her eyes were vacant, her mind busy visualising all the possible scenarios that may unfold after the summit, from the not-so-pleasant to the absolutely dreary ones. What about our people? Fatima ruminated, a look of melancholy shadowed her features. How will I protect them from what is to come?

Her worries may seem exaggerated, but they were not exactly unfounded. Of all the people aboard the plane, Fatima was the only person who had experienced first hand living in a country ridden with armed conflicts. She is – well, was – a native of the Golan Heights. At the age of 7, Fatima and her family had to flee the Golan as refugees, first arriving in Amman, Jordan before continuing their journey to the Netherlands and finally settling down in Southeastern Malaya, Hindia Belanda.

The day before, Fatima and her cabinet secretaries had cooked up a contingency plan, in the event that a war was to break out between the disputing countries. Southeastern Malaya has the geographic disadvantage of being located between these belligerent countries, so any armed conflict would undoubtedly affect the territory in a detrimental way. Fatima knew from experience, having been kicked around from one country to another as a refugee, that it was never too soon to prepare for the worst.

Optimism, it seemed, had vacated the premises that morning. Except, perhaps, for Brega Wardana, the Hindia Belandan foreign minister, who sat cross-legged across Fatima with relative ease throughout the flight. He had been engrossed in that morning’s issue of Srikunti Times, whose headline perfectly captured Fatima’s mood on that flight “Is War Imminent?”. He would slowly sip his tea every so often, without betraying any look of worry.

“Excellencies, good morning,” a confident, assertive voice from the intercom finally jolted Fatima Najib out of her deep contemplation and into the present. “We have just been given clearance to land at the airport. The current local time is 10:12 a.m. and the weather outside, as you can see, is very pleasant…”

The voice went on for another good minute, but Fatima had no interest in keeping her attention to the pilot’s announcement and began gathering her documents, which she realised had cluttered the mahogany table. She had work to do, a great deal of it and she was determined to do everything in her power to avoid any loss of lives during this conflict.

Fatima glanced at Brega and seeing that he had no interest in making any conversation with her, quickly shifted her eyes to the window; to the world a couple thousand feet below. She fixed her gaze on one particular red container ship which, she imagined, had sailed through the violent ocean before arriving safely on the shallow sea of Sekangkang Kera, joining the throngs of other ships making their way to the harbour in unison.

The sea, she noticed, was exceptionally sparkly that morning, like a shone fine-cut diamond. Fatima’s eyes carefully followed the glistening waves, a mixture of deep blue and azure, until they meet the approaching land. She quickly dug around her handbag for her makeup and methodically reapplied them on her face.

Realising that the plane was making its approach, Brega too readied himself, fixed his tie and gave an awkward, reluctant nod to Fatima, who reciprocated his gesture and smiled with equal awkwardness. She thought it mildly amusing that someone, whom she once considered a friend, had now become a stranger.

Long before the referendum, before politics had gotten in the way of their friendship, the two were a close bunch. They had gone to the same university in Groningen, the Netherlands, and essentially spent their youth within the same social circle. They would later grow apart and find themselves on the opposing ends of the Southeastern Malayan Troubles.

Brega, a stern unionist, had cemented his conviction that Southeastern Malaya belongs to Hindia Belanda and Hindia Belanda alone. Fatima, who migrated to the territory at so young an age, on the other hand, had fallen in love with her adopted homeland and thus supported the secessionist movement unhesitatingly. After the referendum failed, however, she began to tone down her secessionist sentiments, instead focusing her newly-acquired leadership on a constructive relationship with the Commonwealth Government in Jakarta.

After a short while, the plane gracefully touched down on the runway and quickly taxied towards the apron, where a small group of people, amongst them the Southeastern Malayan Consul-General, had been waiting all morning.

Fatima and Brega exited the aircraft, walked down the stairs and greeted each official with delight. An official of the Sekangkang Kera government walked up to them and respectfully shown themselves to a helicopter which later flew them to Pulau Pahat.

The small convoy of a black SUV's made its way through the streets towards the resort. Inside the SUV sat the Deputy Prime Minister Halabi, Minister of Defense Wazir Khalid Ibn Walid, Foreign Minister Wazir Sayyid Qutb, Deputy Foreign Minister for Region Affair, Maulana Rasul Ibni Khayyam, Chairmen, Bindu Foreign Affair Council, Maulana Dr Fatah al Arabbi, Dr. Sollehuddin Ahmad Kahar, Deputy III, Security, Intelligence & Cyberwarfare Council (SICC), and a few support staff to handle paperwork for the delegates.

The Sekangkang Kera Foreign Minister saw the Deputy Prime Minister Halabi enter the lobby and a warm smile appeared on her face as she stood up to salute him. They both exchanged smiles for a minute before exchanging handshakes. "Ah, my friend, it's a pleasure to meet you too", the Minister Suzana turned towards the Foreign Minister Wazir Sayyid Qutb and exchanged a handshake with her too "It's a pleasure to meet you too.

The vehicle motorcade carrying the delegation of the Thousandsuns arrived subsequently, and the journey was markedly smoother. Out of their vehicle stepped the Foreign Minister Joaquin Pigao, Defense Minister General Maicus, and his negotiating party including Dr. Palme du Vaross, Chief of Strategic Negotiators, Department of Defense, and also consisting of three civil servants. The government of the Thousandsuns was small, and it was difficult and incredibly risky to transport the entire administration.

Foreign Minister Joaquin Pigao walked in escorted by multiple aids. He smiled to all the other delegates "Greetings. I'm terribly sorry for the delay." He sat down in his chair, cracked his knuckles and sighed "On behalf of the Thousandsuns, I express my concern with the situation in the region right now." he sighed, giving a stern look to the other delegates "However, I hope the whole matter can be resolved peacefully."

Lord Jehannequin, the recently-appointed Ravencourts Representative to External Affair, disembarked from the helicopter not long after Ravencourts Marshall, Lord Otterspring, accompanied by two people who could only be their security detail. At an immediately glance, There's a lot to say about Lord Jehannequin, but if nothing else you should know he's amusing and patient. Of course, he's also disciplined, observant and sensitive, but they're in shorter supply, especially considering they're mixed with being power-hungry as well.

His amusing nature though, this is what he's often admired for. People often count on this and his playfulness whenever they need assistance or help.

Nobody's perfect of course and Lord Jehannequin has a fair share of lesser days too. His hostility and pompous nature are far from ideal and just affect all around negatively. Fortunately, his patience is usually there to help ends things when needed.

Brown, short hair neatly coiffured to reveal a skinny, lively face. Big, round black eyes, set dreadfully within their sockets, watch cautiously over the village they've bled for so long.

A gunshot left a mark stretching from the right side of the forehead, running towards the left side of his lips and ending on his right nostril leaves a grievous memory of his unfortunate upbringing.

This is the face of Lord Otterspring, a true opportunist among Ravencourtian. He stands seductively among others, despite his lean frame.

There's something bewildering about him, perhaps it's his sympathy or perhaps it's simply his attitude. But nonetheless, people tend to take pride in knowing him as a friend, while trying to subtly look more like him.

President Lucas Margarito Blend, was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dominique Kandice Lightfoot and Deputy Defense Minister Mr. Abraham Jewell Jansing. An armed motorcade had pulled up where the two were escorted into their limousines and taken towards Iskandarloka Resort. The President was reading over Fact-File documents when he glanced out his window. As they drove through the quaint streets of Pulau Pahat, the President was taken away by the beauty of the old city. He put his papers into his briefcase and as the limousine slowed to a stop. Two police officers opened the door and escorted the President and Foreign Affairs Minister from the courtyard and into the building where they were seated at the spot marked "Saltbridge Delegation".

The motorcade pulled up to the palace, President Blend stepped out and shook the hands of several officials from all over the world. He and his entourage were directed to the resort lobby, once there he took his seat and took a drink from the small water placed in front of him. He looked around the room on edge, he looked at his exits and then spotted a few of his Diplomatic Security Establishment agents. He then looked at all the government officials from the world in the room, he smiled at a few then pulled his notes out again and began studying again.

President Lucas was known as outgoing, social, great people skills. Good at getting people to have fun. Physically affectionate. Attention seeking loves crowds. Seductive, open, revealing, loving, empathetic, attachment prone. Enthusiastic, idealistic, and creative. Able to do almost anything that interests him.

Despite still a fever, the Prime Minister Carlyle refused to show his ill-health and stayed with the head of the delegation who was present despite being asked to reduce the activity by his assistant. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Crawford appears to be chatting with his colleagues from Thousandsuns, appearing to be the hot topic they are discussing.

“Oh verdomme, I think we’re terribly late,” Fatima muttered under her breath as she rushingly exited the helicopter with Brega and scuttled together towards the building. The helicopter had landed on a conveniently-located helipad, just outside the building where the first series of meetings were to take place, so as to allow the two officials a timely arrival.

Although they had missed the opening address delivered by Dr Earl Koppponia, the head of the CORP, Fatima and Brega arrived just in time for the First Plenary Session, which was being held in the Singgahsana Ballroom.

The two scrambled into the ballroom and approached the Foreign Minister of Sekangkang Kera, who had been busy greeting each arriving dignitary. “Selamat siang Yang Mulia,” Brega said in fluent Indonesian to Foreign Minister Suzanna as he shook her hand, firmly. “Terimalah salamnya dari Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuan Gubernur-Jenderal Hindia Belanda atas nama Hindia Belanda dan Malaya Tenggara.”

Fatima did the same and then handed Minister Suzanna what appeared to be a gift, a small jade sculpture in the shape of a lion rampant, on its paw the flags of Southeastern Malaya and Sekangkang Kera. “Your Excellency, I’ve brought you a gift from the Governor of Southeastern Malaya,” she said with a sincere smile. “It is not much, but I hope you may accept it as an expression of our respect towards your esteemed country”.

Fatima had been looking forward to meeting the Prianganian Foreign Minister, Suradiwangsa, whom she had met a few weeks before during her official visit to Dayeuh Bandung, but she could not locate him anywhere in the ballroom.

“Looking for someone?” Brega asked curiously.
“Erm… yes… do you think the Prianganian delegation will come after all?” Fatima continued to scan the room. She caught the eyes of the Bindunese delegation, whom she had received in Srikunti on the 27th during their visit, and smiled politely from afar. The two then took their seats and neatly placed down several manila folders and two space grey iPads on their designated desks.

Hi, how are you madame minister. My name is Earl and don't worry, you are not late. Our time is one hour behind you nation time and we not officially begin our program.

Please do have a drink and snack at our finest coffehouse, many of the delegates member be there too.

“Hello Dr Earl, I’m very well, thank you,” Fatima said, smiling. “Ah... if that's the case, then props to the pilot for flying us here so punctually and smoothly.”

“I’m sure you’re more familiar with my senior, Brega, the Commonwealth Foreign Minister,” she continued and motioned Brega to properly introduce himself. “He’s a seasoned diplomat, far more experienced than I am,” said Fatima playfully, trying her best to pretend that all was well between the two, to which Brega chuckled awkwardly.

“Now that you mentioned it, I think we both should head down to the coffeeshop,” Brega suggested and Fatima nodded in agreement. “We all need our daily dose of caffeine”

“Especially knowing the scale of works that we need to accomplish” added Fatima. “It’s going to be a very long day.”

"Greetings Prime Minister." The President Blend addresses the Prime Minister of Qorth, Sheikh Zayid Bin Hamdan Al Qorthi. "As a representative of both nations, we are keen to establish positive atmosphere with our region. Especially in light of possible territorial conflicts which may arise out of the Zeniyadh Issues."

President Blend then accepted a glass of mineral water. He began to look at the other guests as he took a sip of the water. his mind raced of what could come out of the first conference, and how this would all align with Zeniyadh interests. He only knew the other guests' names and where they came from. He knew nothing else, he just waited to continue.
