Expansion! (FT, semi-open)

OOC: Please no uberfleets, at least not without my prior permission. That being said, feel free to send something diplomatically,

IC: Talyth had grown, as was her wont. But undergoing a permanent population explosion was not easy. For one, the price of food rose dramatically; Talyth could not feed a billion people, let alone the billions forecasters were saying she would have in under a century. Her second problem, of course, was resources. Talyth had to trade for both food and heavy metals; and shipping in both was proving a strain on the economy.

So it was that a small expedition had been dispatched to the nearby Lazaro system. Enough was known about it - four planets, though only one inhabitable. Jericho, as the planet was named, was a beautiful planet. Abundant Earthlife, one-point five gravities, plentiful oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere, no untreatable viruses or bacteria, and temperatures that stood between a balmy twenty and an enjoyable thirty-five.

Oh, and a scattering of demihuman pretech natives. Not that they were really considered. After all, initial scans showed a total planetary population of under two million, and they could be simply removed to less suitable areas, or removed permanently should they resist.

Six Guardian-class frigates had been dispatched, along with a single hired civilian converted transporter, with over fifteen thousand colonists aboard. They came into orbit fairly rapidly, and the Guardians moved so that the entire planet could be seen. No sense having incomplete data, after all.

The planet below was verdant and beautiful. As the transport descended through the atmosphere, friction-lit flames made it a beacon to the natives. Fleeing it rapidly, the ship slowed and settled upon the earth, militiamen moving out, clearing the area quickly. The air was quite breathable, and as the natives approached, one of the militiamen recoiled in horror.

"Sweet Jesus, look at that thing. All scales and fur and... "

He raised his rifle, as the creature approached. It grunted curiously, and shuffled towards the man.

Of course, the militiaman wasn't having any of that. With the clawed hands and the pointed ears, it looked to him like a beast from hell, and being a simple man, he knew precisely what that meant. He pulled the trigger, holding it down until every round in his magazine had been fired into the demihuman. As if it were a signal, other of the creatures emerged with spears and bows, firing at the militiamen, a few of whom were taken unawares. Despite their superior firepower, hundreds of the creatures converged on the ships.

"Back! Back to the ship!"

Covering their retreat, the militiamen backed up the ramp. They could have won, perhaps, but that seemed unwise. Inside, the commander gasped.

"Johnny, fuck those creatures. Open fire with the security guns."

"Aye, Captain Genner."

A few small guns emerged from the ship, and bullets were spat from them at a rate that turned the barrels red. The miniguns butchered the demihuman force, who, with spears and bows, were unable to pierce the ship's relatively thin armour. A few minutes later, the few who survived ran, returning to their tribes to tell of the demons that had descended from the sky.

Of course, there were only more to come.

Within a day or so, the colonists had set up a base camp. Trees had been cut down and turned into a rough palisade, turrets set up at towers along the palisade. Vehicles were dispatched to hunt down more of the creatures, who died in their scores. More colonists would come, emigrating to Jericho at a tremendous rate. The world was more habitable, after all, and had an abundance of almost all materials. The natives didn't stand much of a chance against such a force.

But then again, such things did not always go unnoticed...

Battlestar Durga

The Colonial Battlestar Durga winked into existance as it completed it's FTL jump. The newest ship of the Colonial Fleet had, apparently, parked itself into orbit of a planet that was undergoing somesort of 'Aggressive Colonization'. The new Nav-Computer appeared to have malfunctioned, and they were frankly lucky not to have jumped into the planet, which would have natuarlly, killed them all. As the Durga got it's bearing again, it noted the ships in orbit, as well as the activities on the planets surface, but seeing as they had no idea what was going on here, they were hardly in a postion to make any judgements.

Therefore, the ships CO; Commander Lila, ordered the helm officer to start moving the Durga out of orbit, although she severly doubted they would get far, at least not before one of the unknown vessels noticed them and attempted to contact them. Whilst she had full confidence in her ships abillity to fight, she didn't want to pull the colonies into a bloody war over a misunderstandment. So, whilst she ordered the ship to Action Stations, Condition two, and the Main batteries, and Flak, Anti-Fighter, Anti-missile batteries were manned, loaded and prepared for combat, the VIpers were kept firmly in their launch tubes as the Flight Pods were never the less extended as the calculations for FTL Jump were begun, and the FTL drive was spooled up once more, in case the Battlestar needed to make a quick Exit

Combat Information Centre

Lila glanced up at the DRADIS screen nervously, she didn't like having her ship out-numbered by enemy forces, even if they were only Frigates. One of her Previous CO's had made that mistake. The Gunstar Tribulant, tasked with fighting of a raiding party of Pirate Frigates, foolishly went up against all eight, and the Gunstar took heavy damage, the CO dieing n the Battle. Lila had taken command, and led the crew into holding ground until a larger Battlestar, the Galactica, could be scrambled to assisst them. After that, she had been noted immediatly for command training, eventually leading her to where she was today.

Lila figured that it was only a matter of time before one of the unknown ships contacted them, but she figured that she had better at least try to get out-system before they did so. She paced the CIC as she waited for the next move.

"Aw, Jeez. We've got an inbound. What are the fucking chances?"

"Pretty good, apparently."

The two navtechs sat at the console, one of them grabbing a phone and speaking to the captain.

"Sir, there's a large ship at forty-four degrees horizontal, sixty-seven vertical. Tracking. Must've just jumped in. Orders?"

The captain spoke. It was his first command, and as commodore, he was also in charge of the mission. Starting a war now would be unwise.

"Send a message, in Galstandard. Tell them this is our territory, and to fuck off. Say it politely."

A moment later, the ship's intercom came on, and the captain's voice across it. "There's a possible hostile contact in-system, gennelmen. All hands to battle stations. I want missile tubes loaded up and point-defense guns ready to fire if they decide to attack. Batten down the hatches, 'cause it looks might we might have a storm on our hands."

The intercom off, the first tech laughed.

"Jesus Christ, we're in trouble now. Not as if we have an entire fleet waiting to back us up."

Battlestar Durga

Sure enough, it wasn't long before the Durga was contacted. Lila moved quickly back to the Centre table as she monitored DRADIS. She noted the incoming transmission as she was handed a Engine status report on the ships FTL capabilties. The Prognosis wasn't good. The Nav computer was pretty badly Fraked up, seemingly it's malfunction had fried out the relays that conected it to the drives themselves. Although the Battlestar could manvour at Sub-light, for the meantime however, it's FTL capabilites were out. Therefore when she listened to the incoming transmission, Lila growned.

'This is the HMS Regency, of the Royal Commonwealth of Talyth. This system and world are the sovereign territory of the Commonwealth, and you are at present intruding on this territory. We request you give a reason for your being here, and leave if you are capable'

She sighed softly as she rested her arms on the Centre table as the CIC staff around them discussed possibilites. It was generally dediced that there best bet would be to stay in-system, so that if they came across a major issue, they would have some help, even if it was a suspicious star-nation. Lila silently cursed her luck at the Shakedown malfunctions the new Battlestar had decided to lay upon her. She missed her last command. She pulled down a head-set from the DRADIS console and nodded to comms.

This is the Colonial Battlestar Durga, we are undergoing Navigational difficulties and are unable to perform an FTL jump, Stand-by.

"Aw, hell. They telling the truth?"

"Sir, I've never seen their FTL drive, but they're not putting out much heat for a ship their size. Most of their systems are probably offline."

"Fine. Tell 'em they can stay. But keep their distance."

You may stay in-system, as long as you remain at least twenty-five lightseconds from our ships and worlds at all times.

On the outter edge of the system, a lone Lenin Cruiser waited, it was powered down, with only Life Support and Sensors operating to help prevent detection, hiding in the shadow of the fourth planet as often as they could to decrease their chances of being detected quickly.

A brief sliver of light illuminated the ship's upper hull for a brief moment, showing CPW Saratov before it was shrouded once again by the darkness of the planet's shadow.

Sergei Demidov, a tall middle-aged man with a clean-shaven face, a head of cut short black hair that was showing signs of grey at the edges, his ice-cold blue eyes glared out from the front viewport of the bridge, his crew working in Control Pits on either side of the long catwalk that lead out of the bridge...His black Uniform, resembling that of the Soviet Naval Officers from long ago, his cap with a crimson star on the front sat proudly upon his head as he gazed out into the stars, a medal of a Brown Crow hung from the right side of his chest, about the size of the former 'Iron Cross', it showed his rank as a Captian in the Kaderbian Coalition People's Navy. A young looking Sub-Lt walked up behind the Captain, a PDA in his right hand with the reports their sensors briefly pick up every time they peek out from the shadow of the planet, handing it to the stern captain the middle-aged man smirked.

"A new Contact within the system...How interesting..." he whispered before looking to his helmsmen in the pit on the right side, who was conversing with the Navigator beside him, talking about a skirmish several weeks ago near the Kaderbian Border Worlds.

"Helm, keep us in the planet's shadow...We don't want to give away our position as of yet." he whispered softly, getting a nod in return from the Helmsman who returned his attention to his console. Keeping the ship hidden safely in the world's shadow.

Battlestar Durga

Lila frowned, they were certainly up to something, and she decided that she would do everything in her power to find out that was. She also noted their apparent concern about her ship being there, which probably wouldn't go down well when a Half Dozern Colonial Gunstars jumped in-system looking for the missing Battlestar. She figured that they had about six hours to get their FTL drive fixed before the Colonial Fleet could trace their location and dispatch the wayward Battlestars, Battlestar Group to escort it back home.

She turned to her comms officer.
"Put us Severn and a Half Billion Klicks away from all known contacts, Launch the CAP, but keep it tight into the ship, we don't want to spook these people" Lila ordered as she returned to the Control Station. The DRADIS screen promplty detected the launch of the Six-Viper Combat Air Patrol as it assumed a postion around the Battlestar, just in case. The DRADIS screen bleeped again as it detected a trace, behind the fourth planet. Lila then ordreed her staff to split sensor time between finding out what was happening on the surface, but also what the potential Contact was behind the fourth planet.

KMKI vessel David Hume

The David Hume sped through inter-stellar space. A Helios Class Trade Spaceship, it was the epitome of Kriegmoglichkeiten International technological excellence. Onboard, in a state of decelerated consciousness, the manager, Ptolemaios Lysimachus was playing a game of three-dimensional draughts against the computer.

Twenty five objective days later, Ptolemaios made his next move. He was about to respond to the computer's move when a small sensor started pickng up some interesting things. This was passed to the main AI, who reported it to Ptolemaios. Glacially slow, his mind worked over the possiblities. A few subjective seconds/18 objective hours later, he instructed the computer to bring him to normal consciousness.

Whilst he was slowly waking up, the David Hume turned and entered into a transfer orbit to the planet that looked so promising. Indeed, the spectroscope had indicated atmospheric consentrations consistent with a post-industrial society: a perfect trade partner.

Alas, however, on entering orbit around the planet, it soon became obvious that there were no trade oppertunities to be had. No matter, he could always wait a few millenia until a society suficciently advanced to make trade worthwhile evolved. Shutting down almost all of the systems, Ptolemaios slept, the spacecraft in a parking orbit in the asteriod belt.

Until automatically awakened only 2 objective years later by the computer.

"Computer, what on earth is going on? Sensors indicated no sign of advanced culture."

[Ptolemaios, I am detecting high-energy sources consistent with advanced space-farers.]

"Native or otherwise?"

[They appear to have appeared from outside]

"Hmm, well, take us in. They may have something intersting."

So the newly reawakened David Hume slowly fell towards the planet.

On the planet, the colony was rapidly expanding. Maglevs were laid down to a second camp, and irrigation systems were being built. The colonists obviously intended to stay.

The demihumans were in a fuss on-planet, hundreds of them converging on one great hut, leaving spears and bows at the door. It seemed to be the only concentration of them remaining near the colony.

In space, Captain Jerran spoke.

"Status?"

"Readings show smaller craft disengaging from the main, sir. There's also a flicker on the radar near the fourth planet. Not sure if it's just a mechanical error, I'll get information from the other ships."

"They're launching fighters?"

"Looks that way, sir."

"In our system?"

The navtech shook his head, and spoke back into the microphone.

"Sure as hell looks that way, sir."

"Give 'em a taste of buckshot. Fire a kinetic round within a few kilometres of their present position. Accompany it with a message."

The ship's main gun whirred into action, firing a round at the fighter closest to them. Of course, it was unlikely it had a chance of hitting, but the message would be clear.

Launching offensive parasite craft from your ship does not speak well of your peaceful intention. Re-dock, or leave.

"The sensor shadow is on all the radars, sir. There's something there. Energy state too high for an asteroid. Possibly a ship, though I can't say for sure."

"Prep missiles for firing. Once this first ship is dealt with, we'll see about this 'shadow'. For now, let's concentrate on the problem of hand. If it stays where it is, ignore it. Tell me if it starts to move."

"Yessir."

Everyone were at their stations now - shields raised, weapons running hot. If the Battlestar chose to engage, it would find itself against an enemy well-prepared indeed.

[OOC: Throwing a bit of a curve ball in your way here, Hyperspatial. If you think this is simply too stupid/silly/outrageous to work or simply fraks up your ideas beyond recognition, let me known and I'll erase this.]

IC:

The expanding Talythi had not, however, been the first FTL-capable civilization to go by the planet now known as Jericho. In high orbit around the garden world, a lone dormant satellite had activated as its sensors picked up the ion trails, blips of communication and other background noise that were associated with space-capable travel.

Not long after the settlement had been established, three ships made the jump into the system, close-range to the planet. Close enough for one colony ship to catch a glimpse of their gleaming hulls. Cruisers, two light and one battle cruiser, their hulls marked with patterns of white and blue.

On the deck of the battle cruiser, the KATK Gonzalo, the small fleet's commanding officer, captain Andreas Kovane, frowned deeply as he saw the ship approach the planet surface. Not to mention what he heard next.

"Captain, our sensors are picking up an on-going colonisation process planetside", the sensor officer said. "We are picking up at least two standard seed bases, as well as noticeable increases in ion emissions."

"What of the native population?" the captain asked, not liking this at all. This was supposed to be a meet-and-greet, the lone satellite having established that the native population had reached a technological level where they could be contacted, as per the guidelines of the Far Fleet. The Fleet's explorer vessels were always looking for planets to settle on or civilizations to trade with, but the idealists in the top brass had insisted on leaving pre-FTL-capable races alone. Hence, only the lone satellite had been left on orbit twenty-six years earlier, to monitor and wait.

"We cannot tell for sure, captain, not without active scanning. But it seems unlikely that first contact hasn't already been established."

"Goddammit", Kovane snarled under his breath. "Contact the Diligent and the Enduring, and begin active scanning of the planet. Start with the seed bases and the nearest known native settlements. Comms, patch me through to military and governmental frequencies, without encryption."

"Channel open, sir", came the answer from the communication officers panel after a few blips on the hard light keyboard.

The first inkling that all was not as expected was when two messages were recieved:

Launching offensive parasite craft from your ship does not speak well of your peaceful intention. Re-dock, or leave.

Followed shortly by:

"Computer, what the heck is going on here?"

[It appears that there are three factions in the vicinity: one colonising the planet and two in space. All with considerable military resources. One at least with the ability to perform superluminal travel]

He swore inwardly. If there was one place he'd rather not be in, it would be in the middle of an erupting conflict between three advanced alien cultures. Unfortunately, company policy was to establish contact with any and every species encountered, especially those with FTL technology. Oh well.

He despatched a small drone containing his last will and testament, in addition to a few messages, to lurk in amongst the asteriods, in the event that it did all go pear-shaped. Then, having fired an alien contact message beam back to HDS Prevania, he fired the main engines to establish a transfer orbit.

Battlestar Durga

Lila watched in amusement as the original ships fired a round, close-by to a Colonial Viper. She was even further amused when a threat came across the airways. She ordered the Battlestar to Stand-Up to condition one, the vessels armamant was fully prepared, and firing solutions began to be prepared, the rest of the Vipers were placed in their launch tubes and readied for combat, as were the SAR Raptors that lined up on the flight deck.

Lila stalked back across the CIC , as if a Predeator, but this time, looking for someone to court martial for incompetence. She considered her crew, some of the best in the fleet, and she didn't accept anything less than the finest on her ship. She returned to the Control station and dictated a message to her comms officer, who promptly dispatched it.

A Combat Air Patrol is required as per Colonial Fleet regulations and they will not be recalled. Any further aggresive action against this Battlestar will result in a responce of due force.

You should well note this is not Colonial space, captain. Attempting to apply your 'regulations' in defiance of another nation's sovereignity does not reflect well on you. Given your refusal to stand down while remaining in Talythian space, we are taking said offensive act as an unprovoked hostile act against the Royal Commonwealth. I am not sure about how the Colonies feel about causing such an incident, captain, but rest assured it will not reflect well on your people.

"Their FTL is down, they said. If they're not lying, we're going to have one hell of an advantage. We have more than enough energy for a few hops, so our maneuverability will outpace theirs by orders of magnitude. Fire direct at the battlestar, saturation. I want every possible position it could take saturated with kinetic fire, so it takes at least one hit. Let them know we're serious. If it moves to engage, drop in behind it and open fire on the fighters. It has superior firepower to any one of our frigates, so provided we simply drop in and take out the fighter screen, we can easily retreat any ship once the fighting gets too hot. Relay the orders to other ships. We have an advantage here, so let's prepare to exploit it."

Every frigate opened fire, saturating the area around the battleplate with kinetic fire. No matter where it chose to move, being hit was quite likely. Of course, the kinetic rounds were not ship-killers, but this was beside the point. The point was simply to ensure the battlestar knew the Talythians were not bluffing.

"Second set of ships just dropped in, captain. Different from the first set. And there's a message from a... merchant."

"Hell. I want a message sent through to Fleet Command on Talyth. Drop local FTLi to make sure it gets through. I want Talyth informed of the situation, and I want more of these pretty little frigates."

"They're three days out at current speed, Captain, though there's a second convoy escorted by another six frigates due in eighteen hours.

"I know. But if we lose here, the colony is at risk. This world is crucial to Talyth's economy and to her future strength. I won't see it taken from us by a group of idealists who think a group of pretech furries are more important than civilization."

This is Captain Orlais Jerran of the His Majesty's Ship Regency. This planet has been claimed by the Royal Commonwealth of Talyth, and both the planet and the surrounding space are now under the sovereignity of Talyth. Your jump so far in-system is understandable, given that this status was not previously known, but must now be respected. Either remove yourself to a safe distance, or be judged as having hostile intent.

Battlestar Durga

"Someones touchy" Lila commented dryly before nodding to her crew to put the plan into action as the now-hostile vessel opened fire on the Battlestar. Their mistake. They had fired on a Colonial Battlestar, and said Battlestar was required to retaliate. Her fully-functioning sub-light engines kicked into action and the Battlestar jumped forwards as it took it's first hits. It's prepared weapons immediatly opened fire, targeting the nearest hostile vessel. As the Flak field was fired, providing the Vipers with the cover they needed to launch. Within thirty seconds, the remaining 114 Viper's launched from the Flight Pods of the Colonial Battlestar. The non-SAR Raptors were also launched, loaded to bear with Raptor-Borne Anti-Capital ship missiles, although the Vipers could be outfitted with similar, smaller weapons, until enemy strike craft were destroyed, they were kept with only their KEW's, although these were just as effective against enemy ships if used in co-ordinated assaults. Meanwhile, on the Battlestar, the Nuclear missile were prepped for launch.

As the Battlestar moved to engage the hostile forces, they broke the regulated radio silence, to directly contact the colonies, a breach of protocal, as they were required to remain under radio silence until found. The Battlestar reported that it was under attack, and requested what assisstance was in range.

"Jesus Christ. One-hundred and twenty fighters. Prep for jump. They're running at STL speeds, we should be able to jump out of the way. Every ship shield the front, accelerate towards the battlestar. Launch all fusion missiles at the battlestar; one should be enough to seriously fuck it up. We've got thirty in the tubes."

Thirty missiles found themselves launched towards the battlestar, each one containing enough destructive power to punch through armour and systems alike. As the fighters descended on the frigates, the frigates began deaccelerating, moving away from the smaller craft, and using their superior range and firepower to pick them off one by one. Engaging them at close range would be disastrous, but, if the captain had thought this out correctly, the fighters would simply never reach his fleet. It wasn't going to be an easy set of maneuvers, but it was really their best shot.

Battlestar Durga

Lila recalled the fighters as they began to take casualties from the enemy frigates, and it becamse clear that the enemy didn't have any fighters at this point. The fighters joined the Flak and PD guns in thinning out the incoming swarm of enemy missiles, as the Battlestarr continued to rain it's fire towards the enemy hostiles. Major Harrison, the Commander Air Group, flicked his viper around in his failed attempt to take out the last enemy missile.
"Durga, CAG, you've got a incoming missile, it's gotton through the Defense grid, not eneough coverage, role to port 45 Degrees for next attack pass" He advised as the missile sped towards the Battlestar.

"Brace for contact my friend" Lila said to her XO, and good friend Colonel Mace, who joined her, and the rest of the Battlestar's crew in holding onto whatever they could as the ship rocked under the force of the explosion. Lila took his hand and allowed him to pull her to her feet.
"Damage report" She demanded.
"Direct hit to the port flight pod" Lt Halloran reported grimly "We've got fires along the entire pod, flight ops are out, the armour kept out the heavier stuff"
"Roll 45 degrees, all Batteries target the enemy frigate and blast them to hell" Lila ordered launch Missiles One and two as we enter optinum range, keep the Vipers on interception and get me a full damage report by the time the first enemy frigate is destroyed"

"We've got missiles inbound, sir. We're taking heavy fire from the battlestar and her fighters. The Boxer is reporting fires all through the engineering section, she's struggling to contain them. The captain is requesting permission to jump, or else he's going to have to vent half the ship to space, or risk losing his ship."

Captain Jerran winced. He knew that was going to happen, but still. They'd done some serious damage, but he didn't want to engage the battlestar this closely. His ships would be cut to shreds in minutes.

"Distract them. Get them to focus their firepower on the Swiftlock. Send this message to the captain of the Swiftlock.

.--. .-. . .--. .- .-. . / - --- / .-. .- -- / - .... . / . -. . -- -.-- / ... .... .. .--. / .. -. / - .... . / -- .. ... ... .. .-.. . / -... .-. . .- -.-. .... .-.-.- / -... . ..-. --- .-. . / -.-- --- ..- / .-. .- -- --..-- / . -..- . -.-. ..- - . / -- .- -. . ..- ...- . .-. / -... .. .-. -.. ..-. .-.. .. --. .... - .-.-.-

"He'll know what to do."

The Swiftlock accelerated massively towards the battlestar, preparing, as it seemed, to ram it where it was now most vulnerable. It seemed an obvious maneuver - the loss of one frigate for an entire battlestar. In the meantime, another flight of missiles were launched alongside it, as if giving the battlestar a choice - finish off the Boxer, at the cost of its own integrity, attack the Swiftlock in order to prevent the ram, or engage the missiles. It seemed doubtful the ship could do all three.

In the meantime, the remainder of the frigates focused their fire on the battlestar, each of them taking damage in turn, but not so much now the battlestar had different targets. Hidden behind the Swiftlock, as well, were a third flight of missiles, nosing in below the ship's drives, barely visible, if at all.

The Boxer dropped back, attempting to contain the fire that was now spreading through towards the engines.

Battlestar Durga

The Battlestar continued to pound away at the enemy ship that appeared to be most heavily damaged. The Battlestar wanted to make sure that the enemy paid dearly for attacking a Colonial battlestar. With the situation getting more hectic, the Battlestar began to split it's assests. As the main guns continued on the enemy ship, the hundres of Flak guns and PD guns focused on taking out the enemy missiles, wth the assisstance of the Vipers. The Raptors meanwhile moved and rained the incomming enemy ship that appeared to be attempting to ram them. Lila had made a call, she hoped that the enemy was bluffing and only commited the Raptor wing, which although capable, it was not to the same calibre of the Colonial Main guns, but also ordered her helm officer to prepare for evasive manvours, that would hopefully push the Battlestar out of the way.

Indeed the Battlestar couldn't handle all three threats effectivly, but then, hopefully they wouldn't have to.

"Sir, they're continuing to attack the Boxer. They've lost the lower gunnery section, and they can no longer calculate firing solutions, both of the navtechs are dead."

"Damn. Order the Swiftlock not to spread her wings. Get the Boxer to withdraw. Given she's so close, it'd be a waste to do this any other way."

The single advantage he held over the colonials was his ability to send his ships FTL - and, as such, he utilized it.

The Boxer, flames spurting from her underneath, disappeared, randomjumping - as there was nobody left aboard to calculate a precise FTL solution - almost three AU away. She was well outside engagement range now, though she was certainly out of the combat. Her fusion-plant was stopped, and her lower decks vented to space, corpses and oxygen leaving together. She might fly again, but not now. She would not be destroyed, however, which was something.

The Swiftlock sped towards the colonial battlestar, accelerating and matching maneuvers with the battlestar as not to miss it. While her shields were flickering, her armour was still mostly intact. It seemed very likely that she would be able to hit. Behind her, the missiles continued in her wake, well-protected from fire by the Swiftlock herself.

You have, at best, fifteen seconds before you are rammed by my ship. If you power down your weapons now, I guarantee you that you and your men will suffer no further harm.

"What in the name of Gid's testicles just happened?" Captain Kovane cursed when the battle suddenly erupted in space, the Talythian battle plate and her accompanying vessels suddenly engaging the retreating battlestar.

"It seems like the battle plate opened fire as a response to the battlestar's fighter escorts", answered the calm, mechanical voice of Huey, one of the ship's three hydran crewmen. Essentially an amorphous, silicon-based blob with a central node and pseudopodium-like extensions for limbs, the hydran could not sit in a chair comfortably, but he - technically 'it' since hydrans were parthenogenetic - had his cradle by the sensor station he was manning. "A Talythian frigate is moving in towards the battlestar, likely attempting to ram", his translation device continued.

"Good God, do they have a death wish or something? Engaging a frickin' battlestar? When it's already retreating?" the XO murmured.

"Hell if I know", Kovane muttered and sat in his chair. "All hands, battle stations. Raise shields and ready weapons. Dewey, do you read me?"

"Yes sir", came the mechanical voice from the comms.

"Give me all power you can give on shields. Open comms."

Attention unknown battlestar,

This is captain Andreas Kovane of the Principality vessel Gonzalo. If you plan on retreating, do not engage. I repeat, do not engage. We will provide suppressive fire. Do you read me?

At the same moment, the Diligent, the Enduring and the Gonzalo opened fire, their purpose to disrupt as many missiles as possible in-flight, instead of engaging the vessels. The Gonzalo, however, began to pick up speed, apparently aiming to intercept the Swiftlock.

Captain Jerran,

this is Captain Kovane of the Gonzalo. Cease your assault on the battlestar and allow her to leave in peace. We will not fire upon your vessels save for self-defence, but we will intercept the ramming ship if need be. There is still a chance for a peaceful solution.

OOC: She's not retreating. Just taking evasive maneuvers.

IC:
The battlestar has been given ample opportunity to retreat while in our space. She has refused these chances, and launched craft with only one purpose - for combat. Given the colonial refusal to return her parasite craft to her hangar and keep a peaceful intent while in our space, we have interpreted these acts as acts of war, and have taken measures to defend our space. No civilized nation would do any less. If a Talythian ship arrived in Principality space, refused to leave, and began disgorging parasite craft in preparation for an attack, what measures would you take? We are not so easily intimidated as to not defend our people.

"Goddamnit, we're in trouble. We're not taking down all those ships. Not a chance."

"Captain, there is the third option."

"I didn't want to do that. Seems shameful."

"Fine. But make it sound respectable. Talyth can take care of her own, they're just... closer."

"Of course, Captain. Sending on frequency 243.0 now."

The message was sent off quickly, as the Swiftlock got closer and closer to the battlestar..

Captain,

The question of jurisdiction is still open. However, we repeat: we will not engage your ships if the battlestar is allowed to leave without chase.

OOC: Just an OOC side-note to ensure your captain knows this; the battlestar hasn't actually attempted to retreat.

OOC: *dinks his own forehead* Dammit. My apologies, then... my reading comprehension apparently still needs work. Oh well, consider the three cruisers holding their position for now. Seein' as Durga's out for today...

Sergei read the latest reports, apparently there was some action occuring near the Imperialist's Colony, Sergei didn't act yet. For his orders were to observe the Imperialist's actions within the system before returning to the Crimson Veil near the Galactic Fringe...

The Saratov, while being a Heavy Cruiser and being heavily armed and shielded by the most advanced technology the Coalition had to offer, didn't stand a chance against the combined might of all those ships. Even with their support ships in the hanger. Thus they would continue to observe until their position was compromised and blast their way out.

Sergei light a Cigar, Tobacco was a rare commodity in the Coalition, only a few plants were brought with them after the Exodus from Earth all those years ago, thus it was a jealously guarded commodity. As a cloud of smoke exited his mouth and nose it was sucked into the Saratov's Air Scrubbers which purified the air they were breathing as part of the life support systems.

The Sub-Lt from before walked up to him once more with a new report in his hands, after reading it briefly Sergei nodded.

"Hold position, no unnessesary energy-usage, they may already suspect we are here from our brief exposure from outside the safety of the planet's shadow..." he ordered as he took another breath from his Cigar, the smoke being sucked into a small vent above where it was purified by the Air Scrubbers...
