United Mercenary Company: NS' Latest MilSim Experience
"War never changes. Men do, through the roads they walk." - Cemeralian proverb.
//FILE: WHO WE ARE
What is this? This is the latest military experience on NationStates. Not just a thread about one political crisis, one war, one major event, but a series of connected stories revolving around brave men and women of your creation, united by the one common bond of making a living together. It's about war and tension, but also about the camaraderie and the bond formed between soldiers, and about the hunt for glory and riches that has drawn in different types from all across the world. It's about facing improbable odds and working as a team to defy expectations. About toppling governments with unseen actions and sometimes knowing that only you, your clients, and your squad are the only ones that know what you have done. Sometimes it's about fighting to survive, in situations where victory is a far off goal and where just making it out of hostile territory or where scrapping together enough supplies to take action is a win.
It's about all of these things, and it's about more. It's about military conflict that's uninhibited by borders and banners, where things have been boiled down to simpler terms; the client, and the enemy. The allies, and the OPFOR. The objective, the people standing in the way of that, and the people caught in the middle. This is not about high tech, well equipped militaries that have all of the modern luxuries that can now be found throughout the world. This is another kind of story; the story of the rise of a new group, one that goes where the former group can't and is willing to do the things that the former group doesn't want to. This isn't about nation against nation combat, while that is what makes up the bread and butter of this story. This is about mercenaries.
And about the rise of the UMC.
//FILE: HOW DOES THIS WORK?
It's simple. This is, as the above states, an interconnected series of stories following some unconventional warfare and a group of mercenaries from across the world. They might all have different backgrounds and believe in different ideologies, and may all have their preference for what jobs to take, but at the end of the day, they're all here for whatever reasons and all of them are focused on the goal of making a living with the United Mercenaries. There will be a couple of IC threads. One will be a daily life thread for conversations around the camp, and one will be an operations thread. Actual combat and field work goes into the operations thread, and there may be more than one operation running at the same time.
Early on, most operations will likely be run in NPC countries and created by the GM. In the future, if there is more interest, operations will likely branch out to become player created and may take place in some of the more famous locales on NS. But what about life outside of combat? There's also a setting that's somewhat of a sandbox for character development and for open world type gameplay in between operations. This setting, of course, is the country of Qasirstan, home of the Qasir people. Most closely mirroring Yemen, this place hasn't had a semblance of true government authority for a couple of years... Making it the perfect location to set up a PMC that's in a legal gray area in some countries. The capital city of Jidarah, home to seven hundred thousand people, is where Headquarters is, and over there, you'll find apartments for your mercenaries and also other accommodations to make your stay here tolerable.
//FILE: HOW TO JOIN?
Does any of the above interest you? Well, joining this is a little different than joining another type of RP. You aren't going to apply for characters, and you aren't going to apply for a nation. Your application doesn't even bind you to continue to use the same loadout, etc. To put it simply, the UMC is broken up into branches. UMC-Seryu might be different than, say, UMC-Qasirstan. Each branch can have their own units and decides what operations to send those units on. For example, UMC-Qasirstan may withdraw units from an operation targeting an organization friendly to Qasirstani interests. What you're applying for is one of those branches, which lays the groundwork for your participation in the thread. Here is the application for that.
- Code: Select all
[box]BRANCH APPLICATION
Nation Name: (Delete all in parenthesis)
Branch HQ Location:
Strength: (Should be around one company, or lower than that if you wish)
Commanding Officer:
Executive Officer:
Technology Level: (Cold War, Early Modern, Current, etc)
Typical Equipment:
Background: (How did a group of mercenaries come together and end up joining an international corporation?)
RP Experience:
[/box]
In the future, there will also be applications to put your locales into the thread and make it possible to conduct operations there, and applications for the operations themselves. Keep in mind when filling out your application that mercenaries likely won't have too much backing or be equivalent to real armies. Think of this as something closer to an asymmetric warfare RP than a true conventional warfare one. With that in mind, you might not want to outfit your men in the same way you would for a conventional war. Also, please read these rules before you submit an application for a branch.
THE RULES
- While this thread should feature a lot of user created content, the OP/GM still has final decision making power. Co-GMs have a similar amount of power, and are to be listened to.
- Keep every other rule on the site in mind. Not saying we won't end up with over the top violence at some point considering that this is a thread about mercenaries who have no accountability, but let's not get ourselves banned, okay?
- Writing is important in this RP. If you're looking to post one liners and the like, you're in the wrong thread. This is grounds for being rejected or removed from the thread.
- Realism is also important. This is a thread in the style of military simulation, so while you may not be perfect at doing things realistically, blatantly unrealistic actions like using infinite ammunition and 360 no scoping will be invalidated.
- It's also important to maintain the theme of the thread. This is about mercenaries, who often operate in the third world. You aren't going to be set up like a NATO army and you sure as hell aren't going to be taking out enemies with tanks, long range artillery, and air strikes. Think of a ragtag band of soldiers of fortune, not a shiny new national military. There will be some powerful branches allowed, yes, but these will be given to players that are trusted and proven and will be limited in number.
- On that note, no special forces characters. I know IRL there's an overlap with PMCs and special forces, but let's not do that in this RP. You guys are better than needing to make a hyper skilled commando to do good in a war RP, and I don't want this to be 'easy' because every soldier has extreme training.
- This should go without saying in a realistic thread, but your actions will have consequences. Remember that, always.
- Have some fun and don't think you need to be perfect. We're going for realism, doesn't mean we'll have it at every single moment.
