IC
“In an honest service there is thin commons, low wages, and hard labour. In this, plenty and satiety, pleasure and ease, liberty and power; and who would not balance creditor on this side, when all the hazard that is run for it, at worst is only a sour look or two at choking? No, a merry life and a short one shall be my motto.”
- Bartholomew Roberts
Backstory
We write the year 1795 IC (Inno Canoni). In the Estour Ocean, the dominating power of the seas for over a century, the Kingdom of Aemen, lies embattled on multiple fronts. A power struggle at home is endangering their grip on the lucrative gold trade in Aurus with the West Exploratory Trust growing ever more rogue. The rise of Wanka, newly united, has the previously unchallenged Royal Aemen Navy tied up attempting to blockade the Kriegsmarine in the Meridian Sea.
The waters are calm. While Wanka gained significantly in the last war, the peace is more a truce, both sides manoeuvring into a better position for the next clash.
Though war or peace, trade still flows. Tons of gold, silver, silk, spices flow yearly from between Aemen, Wanka, their colonies in Aurus and Hespera, as well as the Ummayad Caliphate to the south.
On two forgotten islands, its combined population of barely a thousand suddenly find themselves outnumbered by the recent arrival of curious, temporary immigrants, rich and looking to replenish their stocks of rum.
You are one of these, a cutlass in your right hand, pistol in your left, and your crew and ship behind you, ready to plunder the seas. Away from the rigidity and oppression at home, where the corrupt nobles and clergy will happily tax what you have earned away, there is liberty, democracy, and a world ripe for the taking.
You can be of any nationality, from anywhere in the world, for I have no doubt your sailing abilities easily let you arrive in the Hesperan Gulf. From here, the opportunities are endless; seize shipping of any flag, rob and plunder coasts, compete with rival gentlemen o’ fortune build up your fleet.

Name of Captain: Mattheus Mullawath
Nationality: Ummayan/Wankan
Background:
Born to an Ummayad merchant and a Wankan woman of poor origins, Mullawath exhibits an unusual mix of two rather far-flung nations. Grew up at sea together with his father and took over following the latters death trading rum, wine, silver and silk on the Wanka-Chen trade route. During this time he borrowed large loans to invest in a stronger merchant ship and hiring an experienced crew to man it following lucky scrapes with sea robbers; however it was at this time that trade slumped with the outbreak of war and the Chen market closing. An unhappy accident left the ship in urgent need of heavy repairs, plunging him further into debt. He could not return to Wanka, as his creditors- an influential bank close to the royal authorities- could not be repaid.
With the outbreak of another war between Wanka and Aemen Mullawath managed to through convoluted means obtain a letter of marque (as legal proceedings were pending at home) and sailed against Aemen shipping. Successful in capturing several valuable prizes, amongst them an Aemen sloop-of-war which he named The Prophet’s Avenger (though he was irreligious) following the end of the war he turned to indiscriminate piracy, robbing any ship of value and became notorious for his callous brutality, which was well known, as well as his merciless treatment of those who stood in his way. It is often remarked that he combines the determination and hard working ethic of a Wankan with the natural and barbaric instinct for violence of the Ummayad. Reputation aside, he was not particularly skilled at sword fighting though he was an excellent shot and relied on his ability to command and derive loyalty from his men as well as his navigational skills.
For unknown reasons he arrived at Prince’s Island in the summer of 1795 with only one ship while he was known to have commanded a pirate fleet of six ships. Various rumours have been floating around as to what happened to the rest.
Name of Ship: The Prophet’s Avenger
Type of ship (sloop is highest): Sloop
Guns (carriage, max 20): 18 8-pdrs, with 32 pdr carronades
Crew: 140 men in total. Notable are Quartermaster Baron Knochenmark, who has a claim to the Wankan aristocracy, and Boatswain Pepper Jack who as the name suggests loves and knows all about the pepper trade. There’s an eccentric cook by the name of Short John. Crew are most loyal and several have served with Mullawath since his entry into privateering/piracy.
