The Olah Isles War [OPEN, MT, IC]

Postby Tobiasia » Fri Mar 03, 2017 11:05 am

The Olah Isles are a small group of islands around 600km away from Tobiasia. The Isles were, until recent years, controlled by the Democratic goverment, the main party being the Olah Peoples Party. Tobiasia operates a small military base on the island. The island is temperate, with large amounts of the population employed in agriculture.

But last week, the commander of the Olahan armed forces, Field Marshall Irwak strode into the Parliament building in Lapra and shot dead 11 members of the cabinet. The remaining 89 MPs were arrested by military forces.

Irwak has now declared the isles as a state under his dominion, but there is fierce opposition in the North Island. Irwak's forces have mounted an attack on West Irop, and street fighting is now commonplace. Tobiasian troops have been relucant to intervene, but this week flew a squadron of fighter bombers over a Irwaki supply line, strafing the vehicles. The situation has escalated way out of control and both sides call on aid from other nations.

The emperor has pledged his support and the military of the empire behind Marshall Irwak and his forces. A detachment of missile submarines and an aircraft carrier has been sent to deal with this crisis, and they would arrive in a week at top speed. In the meantime, hundreds of high explosive missiles have been prepared for launching to deal with the case that this crisis blows out of proportion. A few supersonic speed reconnaissance aircraft have been spotted all over the islands.

OLAHAN ARMED FORCES STAGE COUP D'ÉTAT

The small nation of the Olah Isles has been subject to a coup staged by OAF Field Marshall Irwak. After having executed 11 MPs and arresting the remaining 89, Irwak declared the islands as his dominion. Loyalists to the democratic Olahan government have resisted the revolutionaries and currently have primary control over much of the island nation's northern half. There is a siege on the city of West Irop, but is currently in a stalemate for the revolutionaries. The nearest nation to the Olah Isles with World Assembly representation is the Republic of Tobiasia, which also possesses a military base on the northern end of the islands. Although participation has been small on their part as of late, a Tobiasian fighter-bomber force has strafed an Irwaki supply line.

When asked about the situation, most citizens of both the United States and the rest of AD01 with knowledge of the situation in the Olah Isles have criticized Irwak and his revolution. Since the widespread nuclear weapons usage in the infamous War of 2020, which was only two years ago, citizens of AD01 have come to hate the thought of war, let alone a military-run government. There have been calls for a nation to intervene on the behalf of the loyalists, especially after the pledge to assist Irwak was made by the Empire of Ruskland-Preuben. Adainia, in particular, has been subject to calls for participation. High Commander Cole Palmer, 2nd in command of the US Armed Forces, has currently not mentioned to the public whether or not the US intends to enter the conflict in full. The president, however, has officially denounced Irwak for his actions and calls for action.

An official message from the Honorable
PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES of ADAINIA

My fellow Adainians and nationstates of the world,

Last week, the island nation of the Olah Isles, situated in Cratal, has fallen victim to a coup staged by militant forces. OAF Field Marshall Irwak killed and arrested members of Parliament and declared the islands his dominion. I want to make it clear to our world, and theirs, that the United States of Adainia sees this act as distasteful and as a blatant attack on the principles of democracy and diplomatic & peaceful governance. No, we will not be barging in with a ship of nuclear missiles. We will not send hundreds of thousands of soldiers there to die literally a world away from home. We intend to address this problem diplomatically and with surgical precision. Only when it is confirmed that the aggressor refuses to peacefully return authority and power to the previous democratic government will we act with violence.

Thank you,

5:17 PM, Local Time

A small diplomatic envoy has been flown to the capital of the nearest nation to the Olah Isles with World Assembly representation, Tobiasia. Spearheaded by Ambassador Caroline Walters, the envoy is tasked with establishing relations with Tobiasia and sharing with then the fact that Adainia intends to support the loyalist cause. Currently, Walters privately offers and suggests that for the US to send in Dept. of Intelligence agents to recon the islands for vital intelligence pertaining to the civil war and possibly commit other acts of intrigue. Once a proper intelligence network is established, special forces could potentially be sent in as well to directly attack revolutionary forces with precision and deadly effectiveness.

West Irop, Behind Irwaki lines

Field Marshall Irwak stood with his personal staff behind a row of hotwilizers. Irwak gestured to his soldiers facing towards West Irop. "Today we rain death upon those fools who prevent our glorious revolution from taking our people into the twenty first century! On my command. 3, 2, 1, fire at will ladies and gentlemen". The artillery guns opened up, firing shells up into the atmosphere and down onto the city of West Irop. From Irwak's position he could see bright lights disrupt the fragile peace of the city. Down below, explosions ripped through houses, factories and shops. A Olahan loyalist tank was smashed apart, fragments of the Tobiasian-made armour ripping into the walls of nearby buildings. On the tracks leading from the station north, a train full of fleeing refugees was hit by another shell, knocking the train of the tracks.

Meanwhile, Irwak was given the news that a large nation by the name of Adainia had denounced the revolution. "Those fools, those weaklings" he cried, "they will not fight, neither will those Tobiasians. But shall we see if we can draw the bear from his cave. Send messages to all available sleeper agents, they are to cause as much destruction as possible".

Meanwhile President Jonathan Smith welcomed the news that an Adainian delegation would be arriving in Tobiasia. "I hope you will find yourselves welcome in the land of the Tiger, and we can discuss the situation in Olaha".

Behind Irwaki lines Field Marshall Irwak received another letter, from Rusken-Prebeun. The letter stated support for the revolution and the arrival of military troops to support the cause. Rubbing his hands with glee, he ordered the port at Lapra to be ready for any arriving naval vessels. "Soon this war will be over, and Olaha will bask in the glorious rebellion!"

President Jonathan Smith of Tobiasia denounced Rusken-Prebuan as "all bark and no bite", but does the arrival of submarines suggest something different?

A week had passed and arrive did the submarines and aircraft carrier, they were just a few miles away from Olah, but that was close enough for the missile submarines to fire their payload. A few missiles were already launched, poised to hit military bases on Olah. If all was successful, they would cause massive damage. The aircraft carrier has sent some high speed aircraft to make small attacks on enemy positions, all on the coast due to the importance of the clearing of the coast to be able to create a beachhead. Speaking of beachhead, the infantry that were to make that beachhead were now sent from the ports of Ruskland-Preuben, guarded by submarines. A few missiles from the mainland were also launched.

The empire recognizing the Irawaki revolution as an attempt to overthrow the government, and with the train of refugees being hit by shells.
The imperial council outraged by their actions, and disgusted by such actions of bombarding innocent cities,
the empire pledges alliance to the government, and offers:
1.Supply aid which will come through air and sea convoy's
2.troops which will also go through with the convoy's
3.A naval blockade of the revolution's ports.
We hope that you will respond quickly.

Order of battle:
50,000 troops, drawn from the Adab Army and Adab Marine Corps (50,000 on standby, for a total of 100,000 troops)
5 Qalawun-class dedicated troopships, each carrying 2,000 troops (total 10,000 troops)
10 Sargon-class attack transports, each carrying 1,500 troops (total 15,000 troops)
20 Ur-Nammu-class cargo ships, converted to carry troops, each carrying 1,000 troops (total 20,000 troops)
10 Almaikar-class "limited capacity" troopships, each carrying 500 troops (total 5,000 troops)
5 Weimar-class fleet carriers, each carrying 40 planes (total 200 planes)

Aboard the IAS (Imperial Adabian Ship) Salah ad-Din, Weimar-class
Somewhere east of the Olah Isles

Commander Karim al-Junaedi walked back and forth around the cabin to kill the time, as his most senior officers sat around that old oak table that occupied the center of the cabin. The connection between the sea and Adab City seemed to be pretty poor lately, much to the disappointment of Commander al-Junaedi, who hoped for the men in the capital to make his destination clear for him. "Gentlemen," he said, taking the cigar away from his mouth and letting the smoke fly gently from his mouth, "the indecision on the part of bureaucrats back home is, for lack of a better word, irritating and disappointing. The next time we do something like that, I would like to make sure that we are fully aware of where we are headed to before we actually start the journey."

The commander sighed and turned to the window, the great, endless open sea before his eyes. "You know," al-Junaedi continued, "I have never experienced something like this before. Hey, we're still waiting for the connection?"

"Yes, sir, still waiting for the connection, sir," one officer said, reaching for his daily cup of coffee, his eyes glued onto the black and blue screen of the laptop. Signals are pretty weak."

"The 21st century my-"

"Wait, sir, it's connected. We're connected now," the officer said, hastily running his fingers across the keyboard. The commander rushed to his seat and seized the laptop, turning it over so that he could look directly at it. A white, weathered face stared at him from the other end of the connection, his aged fingers emerging from the bottom edge of the screen. The background was that of red and blue, with lines of shiny gold. One of the palace rooms. He was too frail to make it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, al-Junaedi knew at that point. Al-Tikriti had to go to him with all his data and equipment.

"Your Imperial Majesty," al-Junaedi bowed slightly at the screen. The man on the screen smiled slightly at the sign of gratitude.

Emperor Tizqar III slowly bent forward to the screen, his fingers touching it softly. His eyes widened. "Commander Karim al-Junaedi," he said in the most authoritative voice possible. Frail and suffering from age he might be, but only a fool would think that he had taken leave of his senses... and of his power. "I believe you are on your way to this... Olah land."

"Yes, Your Imperial Majesty. The Olah Isles, Your Imperial Majesty." The other officers had gathered behind al-Junaedi's seat, eager to see their monarch for themselves, even if only through a shaky Internet connection.

"I have looked at the map that Mr. al-Tikriti gave me the other day," the emperor said. "This Field Marshal Irwak appears to be a brave, charismatic man. Ah, and I thought the days of glorious revolution died with the Soviet Union in 1991. Ah, Gorbachev, good man, although I didn't agree with him on everything. A costly sacrifice he had to make."

We are not here to reminisce on the past, old man, the commander was tempted to say. For now, though, he held his mouth. "Your Imperial Majesty, if it please you, I would like to know where we are supposed to be heading to. At this moment, if possible."

The old man smiled his usual, gentle smile. "If the reports that I have received are correct, then it seems that everyone is bogged down in or around West Irop. That man, Irwak, is there too, leading his men. No, we will not join them, Commander al-Junaedi. We will strike... from another place. There's a reason I ordered you to sail to the isles from the east. We will strike from another place."

"Which is?"

"East Irop. Once that forsaken place is under our control, we shall secure the land between East Irop and Gardal. Reinforcements will be sent around this time. Hopefully Irwak will be able to break through West Irop and march inland. I expect us to connect somewhere between West Irop and Gardal."

"And if he is defeated or still held at-"

"If he does not manage to secure West Irop in time, then we shall have to march all the way to West Irop from Gardal or somewhere around that. Unleash the full might of our forces. However, Commander al-Junaedi, for now you only need to focus on taking East Irop. We will see what happens from there."

"Understood, Your Imperial Majesty."

"And one more thing, Commander al-Junaedi."

"Yes, Your Imperial Majesty?"

"Remember."

"The Liberalterean Coalition, Adab and Higher Japan have all declared their support of you my lord", said one of Irwak's commanders. "Rusken-Preuben have launched missiles and are attempting to land troops at an unknown location on the North Island. It is likely the loyalists at West Irop will fall soon". "Excellent", replied Irwak, "see it that our allies are showered with praise and gifts, lets buy out the unknowing imbeciles".

Meanwhile the Parliament of Tobiasia staged an urgent meeting to discuss the situation.

President Jonathan Smith's speech to the Parliament of Tobiasia
"We have just received news that the forces of Field Marshall Irwak have launched an attack on the civilians of West Irop. As we have a stake in Olahan, we have a duty to defend our ally. Irwak would be an unacceptable neighbour, and we have worked with Olahan for many years to produce a better deal that works for both of us. The people of Olahan are our friends, and we must support them in their suffering. Because of this, we will support the Olahan loyalists in their war. From this point onwards, the Republic of Tobiasia is at war with the forces of Field Marshall Irwak".

The 7,000 troops at the base in Olahan were joined by an additional 13,000 arriving by ship. The troops would be sent south to West Irop as soon as possible. A squadron of 3 strategic bombers and 5 fighters was sent directly to West Irop airfield, landing in the sunset.

The situation in West Irop was still a stalemate...

Also east of the Olah Isles

The navy was stationed in this part of the waters around the Olah Isles, and aircraft from the carrier had spotted a fleet...

"Sir, just in," a ensign said to the commander in charge of the fleet, "We just spotted a fleet, a half mile from here.", "Hmm," hummed the commander as he put a hand on his chin, rubbing it, "Most likely Adabi in nature, prepare half of the subs, we have ships to sink.", "Yes sir." The ensign said, leaving and then telling half of the submarine fleet to prepare torpedoes and go to the enemy fleet, only to scout for a bit, fire as needed.

East of the Olah Isles

"Commander, you have to see this," said one of the officers, gazing at the window. The other officers hastily gathered around him, soon followed by Commander Karim al-Junaedi. Reports had started to come in that there were foreign ships nearby, and now those ships were starting to come into view. A bit distant, near the end of the horizon, but visible nonetheless, even if only barely. "We have company."

"Who owns those ships?" al-Junaedi demanded. "Are they the enemy?"

"They are most likely owned by this country named Ruskland-Preuben. It's their fleet, it seems," another officer answered. "They are actually on the same side with us, fighting for Field Marshal Irwak."

"Right," the commander returned to the table and took another sip of coffee. "Loyalty means almost nothing these days. This is the era of liars, duplicates, and deceivers. I mean, try to deal with all those bureaucrats back in Adab City. Anyway, stay on course and watch over those ships. Let's see whether they have something in store for us."

"Understood, sir."

"Admiral, or rather, vice admiral Yamato Tachi, the submarines are all within range of the coast, sending a transmission to get them to open up their air fields."
"Very well, launch the first wave of supply planes." He said, and soon enough floatplanes were being catapulted off the submarines, and were flying to the coast of the isles.

Supply planes fly towards the isles, carrying ammunition, food and other supplies needed to fight the war.

To the Olahan Loyalist
Do not shoot down the supply planes incoming, for they are carrying essentials.

Planes from the aircraft carrier were launched, and came in hot to intercept the supply planes. They shot at them with guns, then with homing missiles.

It seemed that the eastern part of the island was being focused on with missile fire, and right they were when the missiles slowly began to stop destroying the east coast. After that, about a hundred thousand troopers stormed the beaches, and for the navy, a reinforcement of submarines was their prize.

West Irop

The artillery guns situated above West Irop were still firing destruction onto the city, but some of the more observant members of the unit had noticed some black objects travelling towards them very, very fast. "They're coming!" One man shouted before the first missile ripped into the hillside. At once it was chaos. Artillery pieces were tossed around in disarray. Irwak himself was present, and his security staff crowded around him in protection. One soldier cried "we are done for! Let us run!" And bolted away from the battery. Irwak raised his pistol and fired it at the young man. The soldier fell as the bullet hit him squarely in the chest. "You have just learnt we do not run, we never retreat". As more and more missiles struck the group, the situation was chaotic. Suddenly a rocket ripped into a gun, sending shrapnel everywhere. A single piece struck Irwak in the leg, and his staff instantly reacted, placing him on a stretcher. He was escorted away to a medic.

Because of this the assault on West Irop looked more uncertain. The 40,000 amassed Irwaki troops were now worried as to their future. Facing them in West Irop were 30,000 troops, supported by 5,000 Tobiasians. If the Irwakis did not manage to destroy West Irop using artillery, there was a major chance they would lose this battle, and ultimately, the Olahan Isles War.

Meanwhile Tobiasia was shocked by a horrific attack in Manside City. A tram was destroyed in a grenade attack which killed 17. The attacker was a suspected Irwaki agent, who was shot dead by police in the resulting firefight.

Back to the War Room

The War Room — The Citadel, Foxborough Federal District
United States of Adainia
AD01

10:54 AM, Capital Island Time

HC Cole Palmer, his immediate generals, and Secretary of Intelligence Tom Haines were gathered around the War Room's sleek meeting table. They intended to discuss the possibility of boots on the ground in the Olah Isles War and other ventures related to it.
Palmer begins the meeting. "Ladies and gents, thank you for being here. All of us know that it's the President's intentions to keep as low of a presence in Cratal, to be specific Olah, as possible. However, since it has come to the attention of AD01, the Cobalt Coalition has handed this issue to us to deal with and us alone. We'll see where this goes. Secretary Haines, give us the SITREP as of now."
Haines nods and takes the floor. "The situation in the Olah Isles has become mildly complicated since our initial contacts with Olah and Tobiasia. Let's first of all go over the current players on the field." A chart appears on the tablets in front of each attendee.

Image

"The sides seem ... somewhat balanced. I have high confidence when I say that Adainia is the most powerful nation on BLUFOR in terms of potential output. However, Tobiasia is probably the dominant power primarily due to location and presence already neighboring Olah. Higher Japan has a presence in Olah. They attempted a supply shipment, but it appears that it may have been intercepted by Ruskland-Preuben forces. That leads me to our situation with OPFOR. It appears to be somewhat gnarly. Ruskland is clearly spearheading the offensive alongside the revolutionaries. The Liberalterian Coalition has promised a, and I quote, "a small navy" to the islands that should arrive within a week. West Irop is in a sham. We don't know if that city is even still on the map or not. It may seem pretty bad at the moment, but it's all talk. Here's why." A second slide appears on the attendees' tablets.

Image

"We have the standard triangle of forces that are supporting and against each other, but we've noticed that there may be potential fighting between Adab and Ruskland. There are reports of a potential skirmish between the two off the east coast of the islands. We don't know if it'll amount to anything or if it's a simple misunderstanding, but there's a nonzero chance of Ruskland being a wildcard in this operation. If we can have the two fighting each other, that can relieve some of the pressure on the islands conflict. We're not entirely sure whether Adab or Ruskland is more powerful, but Adab definitely seems to have the most experience as a nation. Perhaps we can negotiate something under the table with them—I have higher confidence that we can spar diplomatically with them than with Ruskland. Keep in mind that the previous statement is primarily speculation."
"Excellent material, Haines." Palmer says at the end of his SITREP. "Any suggestions of action?"
"Well first, we don't have an entire clue of why Irwak wants power over the Olah nations in the first place. To be entirely frank, it could be for a good reason. My opinion is that we need to know who we're fighting for before we send in any dedicated combat forces. We need to establish an intelligence network in the Olah Isles to keep tabs on both sides, see what they have to say. Let's send in, perhaps 12 agents—six to the loyalists, six to the revolutionaries. For now, have them stick around Tobiasia and let them do counterintelligence operations against Irwaki aligned forces. Speaking of Irwak, we need to know what he's fighting for and what he's up to. I heard that ABN wants to do a story on him and his forces in the first place. That should be a good way to get some information to work with diplomatically that doesn't require espionage tactics. Let's also send in one or two STORM squads to Tobiasia and have them ready at a moment's notice."
CoMAR Leonard Solomon, the US Armed Force's commander of the Marine Corps, decided to chime in. "That's all well and good, but we need a plan for the event that we actually send boots on the ground. I say that we prepare an MEU for the scenario. I have confidence when I say that it's entirely possible."
Palmer gave a nod of agreement to the both of them. "Very well, both of you have points. Solomon, send an MEU to Point Nemo. In the event that Roberts or myself call for boots on the ground, they should immediately be ready to enter Cratal and move for the Olah Isles. I will have our ambassador at Tobiasia ask for approval for two of our STORM squads and 12 of our ADI agents to be able to reside in Tobiasia for now until the order is given to enter Olah. Anything else? Domestic issues?"
"Potentially," Haines announced. "We're having some potential issues with domestic terrorism. A tram in Manside City in Tobiasia has been struck with a grenade attack. Police speculate it's an Irwaki agent. I've gotten word from Golf of Guinea Port Authority that someone was arrested attempting to enter AD01 with the intention of coming to Adainia. Seemed to have undeclared explosives and Cratal credentials. There isn't much we can effectively do in regards to regulation changes that is short of a full-blacklist on travel to and fro the Cratal region, but that's bad PR. I suggest heightened Dept. of Justice agent presence throughout Adainia, especially in the big cities. Have agents in Golf of Guinea and Point Nemo on alert as well."
"It will be done," Palmer replied. "I'll tell the Dept. of Justice to raise their vigilance on the homefront. I'll also make sure that staff in the region ports know to keep an eye on anyone coming from Cratal. Thank you everybody, dismissed."

ADJ has heightened their awareness within Adainia to keep an eye on anyone coming from Cratal, especially if they're known to come from the Olah Isles. Meanwhile, in Tobiasia, Ambassador Caroline Walters has asked for a private meeting with President Jonathan Smith. Walters relays the message to the President that Adainia intends to send in 12 ADI agents and two squads of the nation's top-tier SOF to Tobiasia. Current intentions are to provide counterintelligence and counterterrorism operations against potential Irwaki-aligned forces until they are given the order by Adainian command to head for the Olah Isles. All of this, of course, will only happen with President Smith's approval.

Fighting continues to ravage West Irop as Loyalists and Revolutionaries continue to fight within the civil war with a battle in a stalemate. Stuck in a critical position between current strongholds of both sides, West Irop serves as a vital bridge between the two and as a waterway control between the east and west coasts of the islands. Being one of five major cities in the small nation, control of this particular one is quite vital to the war effort. No word from West Irop has reached the ABN Monolith since yesterday, Capital Island Time. Much has happened since President Roberts's first public words on the situation. Two more nations from a variety of positions, being Adab and the Liberalterian Coalition, have taken side of the revolutionaries. The nation of Higher Japan has taken the side of the Loyalists. Higher Japan has sent Loyalists a supply shipment, but has been reported to have been shot down. Our analysts claim that the Revolutionaries may have an estimated total manpower of, as of now, within the range of 250,000-400,000+. This wide range is due to the fact that neither Ruskland or the Liberalterian Coalition have released or shown any information that may be used to show manpower.
Meanwhile, civilian sources on the east coasts of the Olahan Isles claim to have spotted military ships from both Ruskland and Adab approaching. The two fleets are rumored to be in relatively close proximity of each other, and supposedly may catch each other in a skirmish. Up next in today's Daily Report: "Whose Side are You On?, Part I": A segment on the six major nations participating in the Olahan Civil War.

The Adainian Broadcasting Network strives to get both sides of the story whenever possible. After all, democracy only works properly when its populace is informed. Director Luke West, leader of the ABN, is speaking with the lead reporting team that will travel to the Olah Isles. The team's objective is to travel to the Olah Isles and give coverage on both the Loyalists and the Revolutionaries. Having been short on Revolutionary material as of late, the Revolutionaries have been ABN's central focus as of late.
West directly talks with the 12-man team's leader and anchor, Anchor Annette Janvier. "Ms. Janvier, let's go over the plan one more time. You'll travel by plane from the Gulf of Guinea port out from AD01 into Cratal and into Tobiasia. From there you'll fly out to Ursec in the Olah Isles. We have a ship scheduled to take you from Ursec to Lapra, the major city that's definitely within Revolutionary hands. We don't know how the Revolutionaries are going to handle you and your team or how the border crossing process will go—being a reporter team from an potential enemy nation and all, but we've done what we could to make sure your trip is safe. Keep those press passes on you, and I know it sucks but don't hesitate to kiss ass if it means staying alive or getting the story. If nothing else helps, potentially this will: Adainia is only going to potentially help the Loyalists if that's the only side of the story they get. If the Revolutionaries want any chance of a wild card happening, they need a damn good reason for it." Let me remind you that it's not too late for you or the others to back out now. You're going to be entering a war zone. We don't know how the Revolutionaries or the Loyalists will handle you 12. There is a nonzero chance that you or anyone else will not come back. Are all of you still fine with going?"
The 12 look at each other for some time. There's no protest. "I believe all of us want to go," Janvier tells West with seriousness in her tone.
"Very well," West replies. "There's a bus for all of you down by the curb for the airport. High time to get a move on."

The 12-man ABN team touches down on Ursec the next day and boards their ship for Lapra. An encrypted message has been sent to Field Marshall Irwak ahead of time.

Field Marshall,

I am Luke West—director and leader of the Adainian Broadcasting Network. We are Adainia's and AD01's leading media network. We are a network that operates on the belief that in regards to the news, a neutral perspective must be committed toward and brought forth whenever possible. It is only possible for democracy to run when the public is properly informed of both sides, always. This is why we wish to interview you to an interview. We have heard much from the Loyalists, but to be entirely frank, it is not entirely known why you chose to commit towards revolution in the first place. For what we know, there may very well be a good reason for your cause. I have sent a 12-man reporting team to Lapra from Ursec by boat to interview you. I personally invite you to join our anchor Annette Janvier and her team for a professional interview that could very well change the course of your cause. I have included a list of all questions below that you will be answering. I hope to hear of Janvier's success soon.

Regards,

East of the Olah Isles

"Commander!" one of the officers bellowed, running his fingers back and forth across the laptop keyboard. "The Emperor, he's here again!"

"Great, what now?" Commander Karim al-Junaedi turned and walked over to the table. "He's going to ask me to bring home some coffee and tea from this place?"

"Commander al-Junaedi, I am sorry to disturb you so soon after our last session," the old man from the other end of the connection said, "but the circumstances dictate that I do this, no matter how troubling or irritating this is."

"I understand, Your Imperial Majesty," al-Junaedi said, pushing a button to enter full screen. "What news do you bring to me, Your Imperial Majesty? I trust that it is something important, indeed."

"We have received a stream of reports, still unverified but most likely true, about the situation in West Irop," the emperor replied.

"Tell me, Your Imperial Majesty, are they still bogged down over there?"

"Indeed, they are still bogged down, Commander al-Junaedi. No breakthrough has been made. It's still a stalemate. Pretty much status quo. Mr. al-Tikriti is now reviewing a few reports saying that our man Irwak has been injured over there."

"How severe is the injury?"

"Nothing severe, we believe. It seems that he is still very much in control of his troops."

"And where did we get all this information from?"

"Contacts, Commander al-Junaedi, contacts."

"Are you implying that we have spies in all those other armies?! Or the expats over there, maybe?"

"Contacts, Commander al-Junaedi, contacts."

Probably the expats. Whatever you say, Your Imperial Majesty, al-Junaedi sighed. "So, what are we supposed to do now?"

"We're getting closer to East Irop. Press on, Commander. Full speed ahead. Hopefully we'll be able to tear down the resistance there."

Commander al-Junaedi nodded, thanked and pledged allegiance to the emperor, and shut down the connection for now. Recalling the foreign ships nearby, he ordered one officer to help him set up the VHF radio. "This is the Imperial Adabian Ship Salah ad-Din to all ships of Ruskland-Preuben that have been reached by this transmission. Do not engage. Confirm your loyalty in the war for the Olah Isles. Repeat, confirm your loyalty. Are you for or against Field Marshal Irwak?"

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.
