The AFS had won.
Smoke billowed from the skyline of Delados, the capital of the Republic of Monandi. Technicals full of armed men cruised through the dusty streets, as more flung the corpses of Kalan and Monandian soldiers into burning heaps. The stench of death dominated.
The Armed Front for Our Saviour had assaulted the city a day earlier, almost immediately wiping out the Monandian military garrison. Various foreign forces had attempted to retake Delados, but retreated after a matter of hours due to stiff AFS resistance. The only nation that had remained in Monandi, Kala, was now crippled, and its forces lay licking their wounds a few kilometres from the city boundaries.
Despite the defeat of the foreign armies, the AFS's main target, Delados' Catholic population, remained defiant. Fire fights continued to rage in the north of the city as the last remaining elements of the civilian resistance battled the relentless waves of AFS soldiers. A purge of the AFS's opponents was also being carried out. Doors were being kicked down, men and women were executed on the streets, blood ran through the gutters.
Sergeant Gogi Maladwe stumbled across an empty street, clutching his side, his green camouflage fatigues drenched in blood. He rolled the last few metres into an alcove and leant against the wall, gasping for breath. He checked his AK-47's magazine; empty, just like his ammunition belt. He rolled his eyes and swung it over his shoulder. The revving of an engine could be heard round the corner of a low sandstone building, and Gogi ducked just as the militia-filled technical swerved round the corner, music blasting from its radio. It seemed he was the last surviving Kalan soldier in the city. Though, he thought, that wouldn't be the case for long.
