Julien Pannier, famed television star, was the master of ceremonies and host of the event, his fourth time to do so. While there was much to revel in and celebrate, the Castillian Film Society did take several moments in the beginning to pay homage to former President Michael S. Faring, who was assassinated months ago while visiting Béziers. According to Michel Lenourier, President of the Castillian Film Society, an invitation was extended to President Harvey Hershey, Faring's successor, but Hershey declined to attend. Hershey has been noted to have attended the awards ceremony in the past, including last year while he was serving as Vice-President of the Castillian Federation.
Speculation over the awards process had been buzzing for months leading up towards the announcement of the nominees in December. "Un Autre Tireur sur-les Plaines" (Another Gunman on the Plains), the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Bouvier-esque epic "L'homme-armé dans-les Plaines" (The Gunman on the Plains) starring Laurence Le Roux and Zsuzsanna Petrovna, was widely expected to sweep the awards ceremony, garnering a nomination eleven categories, more than any other film in the history of the Castillian Film Society Awards, including Best Picture and Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress for Le Roux and Petrovna respectively.
Among other heavy contenders were "La Fin des Temps" (End of Days), a spy thriller starring Thierry Lemaire, "Comment Enseigner la Cuisine dans une Zone de Guerre" (How to Teach Cooking in a Warzone), a comedy drama starring Emmanuelle Rossignol, and "Départ dans une Heure" (Departing in One Hour), a crime biopic chronicling the life of Crimeorganisé hitman Giancarlo Urso, played by Orazio Schillaci. All three films garnered eight nominations each, creating quite the competition amongst the Juries of the Castillian Film Society.
However, these films were all surprisingly undercut for the biggest award by "Au Revoir Oiseau" (Bye Bye Birdie), a musical comedy spoofing the real-life conscription of famed rock musician Jean-Lves last year, depicted as "Oiseau" Chatel, who is inducted into the Castillian Army and is due to be sent to fight in Asadabad. In the film, Oiseau Chatel, played by Stevidian actor John Connor, is scheduled to play a final concert and give a farewell kiss to his biggest fan Marlène Pécresse, played by Anna-Michèle. Directed by Jorge Sauvadet, the film echoes Imperial 1960s culture within a contemporary storyline. Sauvadet opted to shoot on 35mm film with Couleurtechnique Traiter-4 in order to emulate films from the Golden Age of Cinema in the 1960s as well as to remain faithful to the plot setting.
Au Revoir Oiseau won Best Picture as well as earned Anna-Michèle her first Castillian Film Society Award for Best Leading Actress, considered the most prestigious in the film industry. The picture also won Best Music Soundtrack for its numerous musical numbers including the title number and Quel est le mot, Colibri? (What's the Word, Hummingbird?). It was only nominated for those three categories, despite positve reviews from the critic circles. A teary-eyed Anna-Michèle fleetly ran up to the stage to accept the award as Pannier read her name from the envelope, as cheers and applause rang from the crowd.
After the awards, Pannier expressed his surprise towards Au Revoir Oiseau's remarkable success. "I personally could not believe my own eyes as I read the words from the paper," Pannier remarked at the exclusive awards after-party hosted at the Palace Monceau Hotel across from the Théâtre du Châtelet. "However, I could not have thought of a more worthy person for this year's Best Actress award. The girl really deserves it."
According to industry insiders, juries were deadlocked for days on whether Au Revoir Oiseau or Un Autre Tireur sur-les Plaines would win both Best Picture and Best Leading Actress, with critics praising Petrovna's performance in the latter. On condition of anonymity, one insider stated that the decision was settled by organizing an exclusive screening for François Hulot, the Secretary of Public Health of the Castillian Federation, who is renowned to be an aficionado of film, and allowed him to be the tiebreaker for both categories. Hulot's office declined to comment when contacted by Poste Cosmopolite.
