Kora Conference

The Iconian government showed interest in attending and oversee the Kora conference between the honourable nations of Sverna with the intention to affirm our common interests and goals in the future regional development.

Among other news, the Baydorian state visit has been confirmed for the weeks preceding the imperial coronation ceremony to discuss the matters of our fishery industry and tax relief on its imports.

Agiosan Ministry of Defence and its Office for Acquisitions has requested to trial our newly developed USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) with their own weapon and other systems. The new USV development project was won by the winning design developed by the IKZ and the programme has encountered various problems since. It is meant to function as multipurpose vehicle mainly for transporting and fire support tasks.

Vasek yawned and slumped deeper into the couch as the TV screen flickered to life from across the room.

"-Seems that the Fokser delegation has arrived safely in Corticis and a security force was seen escorting the group from the train station to their hotel." The newscaster shuffled papers on her desk as the accompanying image inset switched from a picture of the Corticis train station to a collage of the flags of each nation attending the Kora Conference. "In addition to the talks surrounding a peace treaty with Kolonia, discussion of a potential Fokser-Barkadian union is planned."

"Huh, at least I wouldn't be paying international to call the cousins anymore," Vasek muttered to himself.

"A press release from the New Government has stated that the potential for unification stems from a 'desire to promote socialist unity and cooperative struggle, reduce unnecessary infrastructural redundancy, and create a more efficient defense force.' It is currently unknown what exactly this will entail or how such a change would be implemented. The report has also urged citizens to express any concerns they may have regarding possible unification by submitting a report to the Ministry of the Transition through their website."

The TV flashed static before showing the progress of a local tennis match as Vasek got up to grab a beer. He could hear the neighbors shouting through the wall, Vasek had noticed that the two men who lived in the apartment next to him both had Kolonian nationalist tattoos going up their arms when he'd had to ask them for help with his plumbing.

Midway through a TV Programme, the screen turns to black. A message appears on screen

[WELCOME TO THE TUNGUSKAN WARTIME NEWS SERVICE]

[PLEASE STANDBY FOR PRESIDENTIAL SPEECH]

A slight pause. A beep tone plays three times. Then President Smirnov appears on screen

"After the vicious attacks by Suroig all along the border this morning, we can confirm a state of war has been declared between us and Suroig. I am afraid that this means we will have to send the young men and women of this beautiful country to die for the liberation of Suroig. It may be bloody and will almost certainly end in tears for many families, but we have something special that they don't. Courage and compassion. The training, resources and support we give to our troops may be what make our troops so effective at eliminating the guerilla troops of Suroig, but courage and compassion is something else entirely. Courage and compassion is how Bazinov and his men held off waves of enemy troops. Courage and compassion is drilled into every serving soldier. It's what makes them run under fire to treat a wounded comrade. It's what makes them step out a defilade to charge at an enemy position. It's what keeps the hearts of injured soldiers beating. If your son or daughter dies as a result of the fighting, cry not for their death, but for their courage displayed and compassion shown."

[END BROADCAST]

Oversynosk, Kamyshov Oblast, Demitor

The small, usually quiet coastal town on the coast of Demitor was never really a hive of much activity. Mostly a rural farming community for most of its history, the inhabitants kept to themselves and subsided on what they farmed. They only ever went into the nearby city of Anayev to trade with the merchants or buy what supplies they needed. Life was simple, and it was only recently so. There still were the craters that the shells of forty years ago had left behind, there still were red triangles dotting fields where the mines still lie. All memories of an era still fresh in the older generation.

The Demitorian Civil War was a massive conflict spiked by the rise in both far left and far right extremes vying for power in the vacuum left by the collapse of numerous failed states in the early twentieth century. A failed coalition government finally broke the tensions that had been growing in one of the rump states, and boiled over into armed militias and fighting on the streets. The resulting destruction and death crippled the nation's economy, it's industrial might, and the population. The victors of the conflict, the National Revolutionary Front, did not celebrate when the fighting ended forty years ago. The decades of fighting had left the country with little more than men, guns, and broken terrain.

The rebuilding has been slow, and steady. Oversynosk and the villages surrounding it were relatively untouched, the war having forgotten it to move on to bigger cities. People go to work as they normally do, children go to school, people go about their business as if nothing had happened. Shops and markets handled daily business, and people chatted as normal. Nobody took any notice when government authorities or military personnel showed up. They learned long ago to let them pass and do what they please, and the government will respect their freedoms. It's a new age for Demitor.

"Today will be a nice day dear !" said DIna, gazing at the orange morning sky while sipping on a cup of coffee on the terrace of a small pub. Her husband, sitting on the other side of the small round table, nodded, seemingly more preoccupied by his newspaper than his wife's socio-meteorological report.
"Aw, come on, get your nose out of this ! Anxiety is all you'll get out of this paper !" she exclaimed, trying to seize said stress inducing item. The man, after a swift dodge, rolled his prized possession and began slapping the head of his wife with his improvised weapon under the laugh of the few customers around.
Two streets away, however, a small crowd was about to demonstrate how false Dina's first statement of the day was. All dressed in black despite the increasingly hot temperature of the shifting season, they had been standing, sitting, some even camping here for two days now. People passing by did so quickly. It wasn't that protesting, sit-ins and occupying streets was forbidden in Nostrapais, quite the opposite in fact, but there, none of the variously red flags, motto, symbols of the syndicates were to be seen. This protest wasn't about a rise of salary, better working conditions, lower taxes, better structures or whatever the anger of the day was, it was against the system itself, and that was something new. Even the government stood startled for a few days at these news. After that, the initial response was to send representatives speak with the crowd. The debate did not last long. Ten minutes in, the few Party members were kicked away from the place, sprayed with the smelly content of various pots. Still, their motive was now clear. Down with the Party was their motto. The government decided to not act at first. After all, freedom of speech was a guaranteed right in Nostrapais, ideas, no matter how bad or stupid, were allowed to be expressed so long as they were not forced onto people. The Party itself decided to stand back despite the obvious insult suffered by its envoys, reasoning that trying to retaliate would only prove the point of some of the banners erected by the disgruntled crowd accusing the party of suppressing any form of opposition. Soon enough though, it changed. The walls of the occupied plaza were covered in graffiti overnight displaying inventive ways to turn a Party official, a police officer or a soldier into cold meat, suggestions for the government's members sexual life involving their parents, animals or various long and often spiky objects as well as anarchist symbols. A few workers were sent to scrub away the markings, accompanied by a small police force, only to be stoned with dislodged paving blocks and empty bottles.
There, the Police Department of the city, in accordance with the Government, ordered the area to be evacuated in virtue of the laws against violent protests. The protesters were given two days to go back home, after that, the police forces would intervene, leading us to the very day we started on. They were still here and the authorities held onto their promise.
Six police vans pulled over and blocked each of the three road leading to the plaza. Out of them came policemen clade in riot gear, wielding shields and for some, tear gas launchers. An officer with a megaphone warned all citizens living nearby to lock their homes, close their windows and ordered the protesters to line up and present themselves to the officers, giving them five minutes to do so. Pass that delay, the police would charge them. The protesters answered quite quickly with a wave of stones and bottles crashing onto the shields and the cars.
"You have chosen poorly, we are sorry for you." were the only words the officer with megaphone calmly uttered in answer. Then, it all tumbled into hell. Another wave of bottles flew, but this time, it wasn't only glass. Flaming silhouettes broke off the ranks of the police as, in the far, the sirens of ambulance and firefighter vehicles almost instantly echoed. The untouched officers discharged their grenade launchers into the screaming and growling crowd peppering them with stones and more Molotov cocktails. White clouds and screams answered to the projectiles and, nightstick clear, the police charged as reinforcement hastily arrived.
Giving an account of the ensuing brawl would be quite a daunting task. Figure a chivalry tourney of old, or better yet, an antique battle between legions and barbarians, all of that in a dense, irritating fog illuminated in short intervals by the blue flashes of the various responder cars. Despite the relatively small and constrained area, the battle went on for nearly an hour.
As the tear gas slowly fell back to the ground, a spectacle nearly never seen before in Nostrapais was revealed to the various journalist cameras. Two dozens people were on the ground, on their bellies, hands cuffed onto their backs, surrounded by policemen. Their faces were swollen, red and purple, their clothes thorn. Around them, debris of tents, boards and flags but also five or six bodies, weakly screaming or crying, with limbs bent in unnatural ways. Two, in riot gears, were lying amidst pools of blood. Around, white and red uniforms were kneeling besides blackened corpses wrapped into glittering covers.
Thus began a nice day in Nostrapais.

Two hits against the lock and the door broke open. The man with the crowbar entered first, turning on a flashlight. Five other persons followed him. They quickly swept through the first floor before taking on the second one. There they found what they had been looking for: a bed which sheets where slowly moving up and down with the breath of its two owners. They didn't give them the time to scream, or even to properly wake up. Strong tape was applied onto their mouths, their hands and legs restrained with zip-ties and their bodies rolled into their bed-sheets. With that done, the group divided, methodically looting the house of all its valuables. TVs, jewelry, computers, fine clothes, expensive perfumes, luxury food... In a matter of two hours, the house was emptied, only the furniture too large to be easily moved was left behind. Everything was packed with extra care into bags and fabric covers to be loaded into the trunks of the four high end cars they found in garage on the house's side. Said car's keys were quickly snatched, their owners still packed and rolled into their blankets ruthlessly shoved on the rear seats and the group took off.

________________________________________________________________________

The first sun-rays of dawn illuminated the Halls district. The streets where still dark, shadowed by the high concrete buildings housing hundreds of families. Many were starting to wake up to this lovely scenery, the same each day, the grey, tagged, facades of the poorest area of Monchastel. There lived those who worked in the heavy industry belt surrounding the city and which fumes often rendered the air here nearly unbreathable without a mask. Needless to say, the life expectancy was ridiculously low and the cancer rate record breaking here.
This morning however, something a little different awaited them. On the hardened sand ground of the Grand Jardin, a flurry of luxury items was scattered, more than any of this place's inhabitants would ever see outside of advertisement and movies. Informatics material, sporting equipment, cans of caviar, rare meat and fruits, ebony wood and leather, design and ancient furniture, glittering gold and silver jewelry embellished with stones featuring enough colors to make a rainbow jealous, ornate decorative weapons, statues, books, fine drapery and clothes... And four high end cars were parked in the middle of this. On their roof, two half naked, squirming persons, were tied and on their sides, in bright pink and green ink was tagged: "THIS IS THE PEOPLE'S PARTY" followed by the names of the two individuals, two of the highest ranking personalities of the moderate branch of the Nostrapaisian Socialist Party.

Just inside the border with Kolonia

All along the border with Kolonia, just after the border checkpoints, small complexes in border cities stand out from the architecture of the surrounding area. The design is built in the standard government style, with the only identifier on the outside of the structure reading the address of the building and the insignia of the State Health Service. All foreigners who enter the nation must report to their nearest facility to go through a small health screening before entering the rest of the country.

Something many people would notice would the rooms blocked to anyone but special staff upon getting taken for their screening. Due to the prevalence of street drugs, the government has began a program of safe use zones in hospitals. Government staff monitor the use to make sure no health complications happen.

Drugs in Demitor are decriminalized save for the highest drugs such as fentanyl and prescription pills. THC is fully decriminalized, and commercial operations are allowed by the state. "Middle class" drugs such as mushrooms and acid are decriminalized, but production of them is heavily targeted by the state. Users of these drugs are not punished by the criminal system, but sent to government rehabs to hopefully kick their habit. Special police officers of the Специальная служба по наркотикам (Special Drugs Service) of the Civil Security Agency handle all drug crime, and are trained in mental health. They don't arrest, they rather forcfully commit someone to a mental health facility.

This is surely a difference for many other countries.

Return of the LRA!

An Anti war protest turned violent last night, with mobs clashing with the police and shots being fired on both sides. Protest have started since the start of Tungsta's invasion of Suriog, where Baydor has given support, with 2,000 Baydorian military personnel engaged in the conflict all ready and the PM speech where he vowed to give support to the war effort. Many of these anti war groups have links to the New-LRA like Tescluto Larnen who was a major organiser in the protest as well as a terrorist in the early 90's for the LRA. 2 Police officers are in hospital following the night of violence as well as 9 other people who where caught in the protesters cross fire as well as 4 fatalities. 812 people have been arrested for shooting, assault and vandalism. This afternoon the ministry of defence announce that they thwarted a bomb plot in potstone what could have killed dozens of people. The parliament is expected to have a discussion on the matter tonight.

I was sitting on a bench, on the sidewalk, sipping on a cup of cold tea brought a few minutes earlier at a snack-bar. The day was good, sunny and hot, perfect for the kind of walk I took. The cars were swiftly passing by a few meters away from me, their buzzing annoying but nothing more. I was a city man, used to that almost as much as to the smell of the exhausts on the busy roads. A red light regularly jammed the traffic at the end of the street and it is thus I came to here the following, on a radio of a car stopped in front of me.

"... now, onto the last part of our legal segment with rather interesting news for the Nostrapaisian diplomacy and international relations."

"This is right Jacques, just today a new law regarding extradition of Nostrapaisian citizens has been passed just yesterday."

"Now, could you give us the meat of it ?"

"Of course, very quickly said, this is a game-changer for foreign lawyers looking to judge deeds perpetrated by our citizens on their lands. Before, as you know, Nostrapais absolutely refused any form of extradition, no matter what was done. Now, this can happen under some specific conditions. The foreign court has to prove the guilt of the Nostrapaisian citizen involved on the wrong side of the bar through a regular trial in which the suspect must be defended by a lawyer mandated by the local Nostrapaisian embassy but isn't obligated to be present. There, the full dossier and proofs must be sent to the embassy for consideration and, unless the dossier is dismissed on the ground of irregular procedures, the involved citizen will then be arrested by Nostrapaisian police if he is still in Nostrapaisian ground and be transferred to the plaintive country.

"But are there exceptions to this ?"

"Yes there is, two to be exact. First is the case of a crime warranting death sentence, in which case, a second trial will be conducted in Nostrapais based on the dossier transmitted by the other country and the criminal, if he is, will be prosecuted according to Nostrapaisian law regarding the crime committed. The second is military perso..."

The car took off again and my day was ruined. Some very unpleasant souvenirs were brought back to my mind and I was left wondering if this was retroactive. You see, quite a few kilograms of weed passed various borders thanks to me. That is, until a blue gloved guy found it all.

Demitorian Foreign Affairs Agency issues protest to Nostrapais extradition policy

In the nightly news broadcast on the Demitorian state owned media network, it was anything but normal. Weekly, at the end of the week, the main departments in Demitor give updates on recent events, comments on happenings, or issue statements. Every single one of the eleven main government departments gets thirty minutes for their prepared statements and another ten for questioning. Most of the time, the only departments to even feature are the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Agency on Economic Affairs.

As the time came, a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade made some opening remarks before the People's Commissar for Trade, Foreign Policy and Intelligence stepped up to the podium, greeted the press, and made the following statement:

"Members of the press, citizens, and colleagues around the world, I appreciate you listening to this following announcement. It has just come to my attention that the Nostrapaisian government has come out with a new extradition policy, one that the government I serve must protest. We are a nation of laws, and our laws are what we decide. The current policy of this government is that any and all crimes will be punished according to our laws. A lawyer sent by their government is not accredited by the State Internal Security Service, the Civil Security Agency or the Civil Affairs Agency. Therefore, they are not allowed to practice law unless supervised by a attorney appointed by the Office of the People's Commissar for Security and Domestic Preparedness. The lawyer sent by a foreign government to represent their citizen will have to be present, as any lawyer should be. The extradition of a criminal to Demitor will be demanded regardless of any procedure. Criminals are criminals, and should be punished, not used as diplomatic leverage. The Demitorian Government still declares it's law over it's own land, and will see violators punished according to it. Criminals will face trial here no matter what."

OPINION

Etienne Dumont, Nostrapaisian Socialist Party Elected Attorney for The Morning Courrier - International Edition - 03/04/2021, 13:17, Last edited 03/04/2021 13:49 - Translated by M. Belloeil

In Defense of the New Extradition Law against Demitorian DFA&T statements - In a world ever so fractured by regional alliances, opposing political, religious, economical and social conceptions and outright armed conflicts, one reasonable person would find strange for someone else to wish for even less international cooperation and compromises for better worldwide relationships. In this regard, the declarations from the Demitorian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade came as highly surprising to a large majority of Nostrapaisian people with interest into world politics. In a deranged exercise of national egoism, they wish for Nostrapaisian due protection over its citizens to be ignored, attacking our national sovereignity in favor of their own. In their words, no nation but themselves can rule over their own matters. This is a most reasonable take, until a foreign element comes into play. There, instead of favoring discussion, agreements, they stubbornly stay on the previous idea but only for themselves, going as far as interfering with other sovereign countries's duty to protect their own citizens, thus violating the very credo they set themselves on. Wouldn't it be a more reasonable approach to still try and further reciprocally good entente in economical, diplomatic and judicial terms instead of turning a blind eye to one nation's efforts to instead push a blunt nationalism ignoring the very rights of others ?
These efforts furnished by Nostrapais to open itself to the world are completely ignored in what one could very reasonably call a mindless rant. Instead, it is a litany of "I", "my", "our country", "its law", "its land" and "they", "their", "them", not a single "we", "us" to be seen. No matter...

Cadenza Announces Switch to the Serrian Lira

By Kelli Oleoin

This evening, President Daniel Kerman has finally signed off on the long-debated and often controversial topic of our nation's currency. Representative of Finance Ulian Klaski first put forth the proposal to switch the currently outdated Cadenzan Cadzen form of currency to the Serria Lira back in February 2020. The proposal received support from the Council of Trade due to their long-standing relationship with Serria but was immediately shut down by the Council of Commerce. Representative of Commerce Plaski Kerman first retorted the proposal mainly due to the high costs and the enormous effort required to perform such a feat. They also cited the obvious fact that Cadenza would not have control over their own currency anymore.

It's true, the change will have a massive impact on commerce within the country short term, but the statements were countered by the Council of Trade stating that the long-term effects of switching currencies would far outweigh the short-term losses. The Council cited that this change will greatly reduce trade barriers on a macro and micro level, and that Cadenza would still have control over the currency within Cadenza. Similar arguments were brought up within and between these 3 councils for the next 14 months until just this evening when the councils finally came to a unanimous decision and President Kerman signed off on the proposal. About an hour after the signing, Representative Klaski held a speech dictating what the transfer of currency would look like for Cadenzan citizens. In his speech, Klaski states:

"The transfer will be a rather simple process for most. On December 31st, 2021 at 11:59 PM all digital currency will be automatically converted and exchanged to Liras. After the start of the new year in 2022, the Council of Finance will begin replacing paper Cadzens with paper Liras. We expect this to be a slow process and should take upwards of 8 months to a year. During this transition period, both currencies will be accepted by banks and businesses. Citizens will be given the option to convert their paper Cadzens to paper Liras at random. By the end of the transition period, businesses will stop accepting Cadzens, but they will be available for conversion indefinitely."

The response to Klaski's speech has been mixed at best. While most citizens will benefit from the transfer, especially long term, there are worries about the availability of Liras to convert to, and some die-hard Cadzen fans do not want to give their precious currency up. Either way, the switch will greatly help in both domestic and international trade, and will further tighten ties with neighboring Serria.

OFFICIAL MESSAGE OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF ICARIA

Image

Two wonderful pieces of news have made their way into Icarian headlines today! The Federal Icarian government, having working tirelessly to achieve these goals, proudly announces the following:

-> Edessa has become the fourth Icarian city to reach a population of 1 million, as of the final results of the 2021 Census. The entire census leads to a current estimation of the FRI's population at 18,000,000. The city's growth since the end of the conflict is largely in part to our previous allies in the Meridan Treaty, and our great Svernan friend Kolonia. Large infrastructure development allowed for the growth of the city as an area for shipping, and excellent work opportunities provided by our great country led to an influx of many people from all over Icaria. Foreign investment and citizens have helped to grow the population of the city even more. It is truly a great day for our country to hold 2 of the 4 larges cities in Icaria.

Image

-> Excellent progress on the economic growth and recovery of Icaria is to be reported today! Economic predictions from the Mining Sector have far exceeded their goals, and the GDP of the whole country continues to grow at an ever increasing rate. The GDP of the FRI is expected to pass $50 billion this year, and there are no signs of this growth slowing any time soon! The great companies and their dedicated employees continue to break records, and productivity goes further up across the board, with workers working for longer and more fulfilling hours across the country.

Stay tuned for more news to come!

A house south of Sochos, the FRI

April 4th, 18:48

The sun was still way up in the sky on what was becoming a particularly hot afternoon. The southern outskirts of Sochos stretched far away from the calm breezes off the lake that usually made the springs in the city pleasant. They were far more pleasant before the war came. The city, building its economy up from mining, like much of the rest of Icaria, still had a long way to go.

A few men sat in around a coffee table in a small house near the end of a dirt road and on the edge of the start of the rolling plains in the center of the country. It was a particularly nondescript area. The war had come through, like it had everywhere else, and with the arrival of foreign forces, it had left. Skirmishes in the region lasted through 2018, but those forces were loyalists of the previous warlords that had existed around what was now the ever-growing capital of the FRI, Evdilos. After a series of raids and counter-terrorism operations executed first by the Kolonians and, later, forces of the FRI, things had sort of become peaceful in the region. When the opposition across Icaria was finally eliminated, the foreign armies left their puppets behind to find bigger fish to shoot dead.

In this room, around this coffee table, though, were people who wished to change that.

"My friends, we must face it. The Icarian National Liberation Front is gone. We have been on our own for more than a year, now, and I am saddened to tell you that my final contact in Ostreich has gone dark."

Sighs spread around the room. This was the last of a long list of signs that there was no hope for the rise of the Ostreich again. Their funding and resources were gone. Dreams of a unified Icaria had long died.

One man stood up from his chair. "Brothers! We must not sit here and sigh. We must make a new plan forward, a new way to achieve our goals. I have been thinking - We cannot get support anymore in the format we exist in. There is far too negative of a connotation to the INLF. We must change our name along with our goals."

"People still will never get on board with us!"

"That's exactly what we will get them to do," He exclaimed, "We get them to support us the whole way through!" This got looks of confusion from the table.

He was confident in what he said, though. "We must highlight the exploitation and foreign occupation that exists in this country. People are being forced to work horrific hours for minimal pay everywhere in this country. They line up behind the foreigners because they pay better than the government, and they become no better than slaves to their interests and objectives. If we change our name, and our objective, we can use them to propel us into power."

"We must use 'People' somewhere in the name."

"No, even better, Popular. The Popular Movement for Icarian Liberty."

"Icarian RIghts!"

"Even better!"

"We have to eliminate the government in Evdilos. The warlord fucks, they must go. People will rally behind this!"

They poured a few shots of barely diluted liquor amongst themselves.

"To fallen brothers! To a new Icaria! To the PMIR!"

The cheer and following clink of the glasses were a whisper to the kids playing a rugged game of football outside. The afternoon carried on.

All along the coast and the border with Kolonia
Many reports by radio hobbyists along the coastline and border of Demitor have begun reporting strange noises on several different frquencies, audible, but still as if nothing was being said. The Demitorian government has been known to use so called numbers stations in the past, though operation of them has been quiet from the known transmitters ever since two decades ago. The transmitter for this time around have not been located, with the transmitter switching several times a second in between broadcasts to help eliminate any attempts at localizing where it's origin point is.

TRANSMIT VIA ORIGIN-KEYHOLE, FOR OWN EYES ONLY

"This is transmitted at the request of the Civil Security Agency and the Department of State Preparedness. There has been a small outbreak of disease among citizens at a border town with Kolonia. All border entry points are to be closed at once to everyone but Demitorian nationals, and the Department of State Preparedness will be enacting it's emergent situation directives to contain the spread. It is unknown at this time what is currently the ailment affecting these citizens, but all precautions must be taken. If any foreign government inquires as to the reason, direct all questions straight to the Office of the People's Director of Border Security or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's International Affairs Office (DFA&T IAO). All persons with this message are required to keep silent until further directives are given."

This morning, an unusual spectacle awaited the inhabitants of Gravetières, a border town to Nari. Early, the whole industrial district around the freight train station was blocked by a massive deployment of military vehicles, including a high number of heavy duty transport trucks. And the train arrived. Despite the tarpaulin cover, nobody could be mistaken by what was sitting on the flat wagons, specially when long barrels where sticking out. When said cover were taken off, the eyes of some of the soldiers and station workers glittered in envy. Twenty main battle tanks sitting low on their platforms, featuring highly angled front glacis and bulbous, red eyed turrets, both covered in small armor blocks. The newly installed cranes were of great help to get the steel monsters out of their platforms and onto their trucks.
In a corner of the station, two uniforms where discussing. One khaki, featuring silver medals on the chest and a red and green patch on the shoulder representing a loaded mule walking, a soldier of the transport division, the other all in dark red under his safety vest and white helmet, the station chief.

"That's quite a fuss, the second said, blocking the whole station for that... The railroad syndicate ain't gonna be happy."

The soldier waited a second, thinking before answering.

"Not my issue pal, you should see that with the military governor of the district. You'll probably get some money in indemnities anyway with how tense the government is these last days."

"You don't say... Guess we ow some thanks to these anarchists afterall."

"You're not the one cleaning up that mess..."

"Ha ! True ! But anyway, how many more can we expect ?"

The soldier shuffled through his papers.

"Probably one more train of tanks, then a couple of planes in parts and maybe more stuff I can't tell you about. You'll be warned a day prior anyway."

"Again ? Just a day ? For God's sake... You see the mess around here..."

"We can't really risk any leak of equipment like that, you wouldn't want your little station to be blown up by an anarchist Sukhoi twenty-five, wouldn't you ?"

"Yeah, yeah... So anyway, what does all this stuff means. First the Barkadian guns, now this... You must know something right ? Nostrapais's going to war or what ?"

"As if I'd give that kind of information to a border town train station chief..."

"Oh c'mon, you know me, I'm no snitch !"

The soldier sighed.

"Truth be told, we don't know. Higher ups said it's just they had a good deal with Kydzhariston to renew some old stuff, and by Allah, we need that. Some of these militias in Verkimlund are better equipped than us... So yeah, guess their explanation makes sense."

"But you, what do you think that means ?"

The soldier looked around him quickly.

"The government's shitting themselves with these anarchists, that's what I think it means. They want to show some muscle and ensure ties around if things go very bad."

The station chief nodded in silence before going on his rambling again.

Ensuring the Peace

Postby The Empire of Chikara » Fri Apr 09, 2021 2:36 pm

Location: Situation Room of the Binh Thu-ong Palace

Head of Karan Intelligence: “As you can see from the report sir, the media campaign in Nostrapais has been a total success. Pastors, Priests, and Imams all across Nostrapais are shifting the tones of their teachings. We have seen massive spikes of concern over the alarming number of atheists within the anarchist movements throughout the religious communities of Nostrapais. It is now commonplace for religious leaders to warn about the dangers of anarchism and atheism throughout the country. As well, it is quite common for them to be warning their congregations to begin making plans just in case things get worse. As of now the majority are still in favor backing what they view as the most stable option which appears to be the government, many churches and mosques are organizing collections of water, food, and medical relief to be donated to the police and military in a show of support for their efforts. We have also seen spikes in large public meetings of Pastors, Priests, and Imams which indicates an increased level of Abrahamic unity on the matter.

Furthermore, while still not common, we have begun to see the formation of religious based street action groups which are taking a stand against the anarchist movements.

I am advising that we move to phase two and that you authorize my staff on the ground to begin making first contact with some of the country’s most prominent religious leaders as well as Karan unionist movements and begin assisting them in forming a more well connected communication and leadership network, as well as assist them in the formation of “just in case” planning and the gathering of basic domestic supplies in preparation should the anarchists become a major threat and the need for phase three arise.”

Emperor Kuvet: “See that phase two is initiated immediately. Gentlemen I don’t think I need to remind you how important this operation is. Should the anarcho movements gain sufficient support in Nostrapais we will have no choice but to intervene directly in an effort to ensure the continued survival of our brothers and sisters across the border. Not only that, but public polling is already showing drastically high levels of approval for the use of action against what they view as “anarcho atheism”. If we cannot keep this threat contained we may find that we have no choice but to go to war against these rebels, a war which would threaten the delicate peace we have held with the CCSR states. We must contain this, whatever the cost. We cannot afford a general war on the continent.

I also want General Kami Sori and the Third Army brought up from the south and stationed along the border with Nostrapais and Nari. Do it quietly, I don’t care if that means it will take longer. We don’t need the CCSR panicking and believing we are preparing to invade. This is to serve as extra defense and manpower should the tentative peace breaks.

Finally, get me the Anderian President on a video call immediately, I want to get his opinion on the matter, see if he has any intelligence about these rebel-rousers, and ensure our ties continue to hold."

(Friendly Reminder: Emperor is just a title, Kuvet's office is a presidential one)

The Dolfik Kingsrike is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy located on the planet Kerbin from the game Kerbal Space Program, taking influence from various European cultures, primarily those of the British Isles.
Note: the nation's canonical name is Dolfikland, "Dolphiland" stems from a time a few years back when I was bad at naming things, and is canonically a mistranslation.

The Rada Building, April 4th

Vincent Čiernik gets up from his office chair and prepares for the walk to the Hľadisko. The Council majority member is right behind him, following as Vincent shakily opens the door and steps into the hallway. It suddenly stretches and seemingly goes on infinitely. He stops and stares, confused and then worried that something is not right. But he forces through the infinite hallway and makes it down to right outside the auditorium. He had been here before during other big moments, like when he was inaugurated, or when he was presenting his first ever bill, which was passed easily. But this was obviously different. His signature was not approving some military base or nuclear power. It was ending a decades long conflict, one where tens of millions served over the years, a decent minority of which never got to go home, or came home a completely different person than they were before. It had gotten to the point where there was almost a nuclear war. But it's all ending today. His final signature would end it forever. The efforts of Sverna have paid off, and now, instead of fear, hope will dominate the minds of hundreds of millions of great people here and around the world. As much as he was anxious, he was proud of himself and others for their work this last month. The Svernan Cold War will now be over within the next few minutes.

He swings open the door with the council member right behind him. Cameras began flashing as he sticks his right hand up and gives a subtle wave. He walks over to the table where he usually sits during meetings and quickly plops down on the chair. The folder sits open in front of him, and there are already four other signatures on the paper, all from the people he has been talking to and making friends with for the last month. The biggest space, left for him, is staring back at him. He looks back up at the camears.

"We are here today, a very important day, to finally end the conflict weighing down on all of our shoulders for decades. The work the diplomats, politicians, and others have poured into this massive treaty cannot be understated. And now, with my signature, it will be final. No longer will we think about our cities being destroyed by missiles. No longer will we lose our sons, daughters, and others on the frontlines fighting over mere kilometers of frozen land. No longer will people be missing the basic items needed for a good, long life. And not only will we not fear war. This will be the start of an entirely new era of cooperation and freedom upon the content. Even just what is outlined in this treaty will set the stage for aid and projects across the continent. We will not fight against each other's growth or prosperity. I cannot thank the other governments enough for participating and making this a successful endeavor. This will help all of us forever.

His pen hits the paper. The ball rolls ink into a sloppy cursive signature. He holds the folder up on the desk, showing off the signatures on the paper. The cameras start flashing and there is applause across the auditorium.

This is Pine Station, bringing you all news Barkadian since 2005.

"Good evening, and thank you for joining us on this historic evening. The new True Pine Vincent Čiernik made his intentions for peace clear ever since his inauguration, and the results could not be more clear. He has been working hard with the other nations on this great continent to foster a new era of growth and prosperity, and it has been more successful than anyone could've ever imagined. Not only has peace been achieved, but it has been in our favor decisively. Eastern Barkadia, an occupied Kolonian territory with millions of ethnic Barkadians, has been officially signed over to us. Kolonia has recognized that we are the rightful owners of the lands, and millions of Barkadian citizens celebrate across the country. This success alone has massively bolstered Vincent's popularity, and may lead to his reelection if he ever pursues it. Other important agreements, like the binding non aggression treaty with all nations of Sverna, gradual WMD disarmament, and the reopening of the Kolonian border, will lead to an unprecedented era of peace across the continent, one not seen since the end of the 19th century. Cooperation with our Faulksnian comrades was also established, and Vincent hopes to continue strengthening bonds and supposedly might even move towards a union with the Faulksnian people. Other features, like acknowledging the valid democratic systems, and high speed rail projects to aid further cooperation with Svernan countries, were laid out over the last month. One thing is clear, people. Vincent has won the peace in Sverna, and in only four months of his term, has made history. This is all for now. Later tonight, join us for learning basic greetings in Stractan and Slavian."

Binding Non Aggression Treaty

Acknowledgement of the validity of other democratic systems

Acknowledgement of Stolska and territories west of Bily Lesk as renamed Barkadian core territory in exchange for reparations and aid for HST stuff

Gradual WMD disarmament with regular inspections from Stractan personnel

Groundwork set for high speed rail, funds and materials to aid cooperation

Reeducation to reverse prejudice and ethnic tensions

Reopening of borders to allow trade and travel

Groundwork set for the Barko-Faulksnian Union along with reassurances

Increase in cooperation for other projects across the continent

A church in Zgienicza, the capital city.

For many years, religion in the nation was hardly suppressed due to the focus of the government on containing the many crises that had arisen over the decades prior. With those issues now solved or quieted down, work continues. Churches generally are small, nondescript establishments, with many churches choosing to not be elaborate with their exterior. The population of Demitor was mainly agnostic or atheist, with a small minority of Abrahamic religions and a extremely small population of ethnic native religions. Generally, the religious kept to their own neighborhoods with their own shops and societal customs. The normal, larger population had a blind eye to them, but under the surface tensions were growing. The religious community feels stifled by the general indifference and hositlity towards their beliefs, while the agnostic/atheistic population feel like the religious are radicalizing everyone they touch, and are dangerous.

In a house in one of the religious neighborhoods, a group of prominent Abrahamic religious leaders gather. They all generally get along well, and talk amongst themselves about theology and other general conversation. They gathered in the living room while food was prepared in the kitchen, music stifling any outside noise.

They wouldn't have noticed the four SUV's with government plates pull up in front of the house. The occupants of the SUVs disembarked, wearing full body armor with the insignia of the Internal Security Service's Office of Special Enforcement (ISS OSE). Parked further down the street were marked police cars of the Civil Security Agency Police. Some of the agents of the OSE walked up to the door while some went to the back door of the house. The team at the front door brought up a handheld battering ram, and swung it, knocking the door clear off its hinges. The back door was kicked in, and they stormed the house.

Immediately, the religious leaders were taken by surprise and forced to the ground, handcuffs being placed on them. A police transport van was already backed into the driveway. They were marched out and placed into the back of the van, being told they were being arrested for ""Sponsoring Terrorist Actions and Conspiring to overthrow the General Secretary and promote disunity by the population."

Several minutes later, TV programs were interrupted by a message from the People's Commissar for Security and Domestic Preparedness. No longer in a suit, the Commissar was in a full uniform akin to that of the military. He spoke from a prepared statement, which was kept brief and to the point.

"Citizens, I am before you now to announce that this government is no longer going to tolerate disunity and discontent within the population. For far too long in our history, religion has caused countless wars and struggle. We today recognize that any and all religious activities can lead to radicalization and therefore lead to terrorism. The General Secretary and the State Revolutionary Committee have a duty to not allow this to happen, it is our responsibility to promote brotherhood and unity among all citizens of this nation. Therefore, in the name of Brotherhood and Unity, all religious establishments are hereby stripped of all protections from search and have their sanctuary status revoked. Religious threats to national security will not go unpunished. I believe my colleagues in the Armed Forces will also adhere to that. Furthermore, all religious specific clothing is hereby banned without express permission from the Internal Security Service. Violators will be expelled from the nation. As far as international religious organizations go, they will only be allowed to operate with oversight of the security services. It is time to stand up to terrorism. If you see something, immediately call 155. We can stop this menace together."

FOR OWN EYES ONLY

REPORT ON REPORTED ANARCHIST CELLS OPERATING ON THE CONTINENT OF CANCODIA.

All Concerned Persons,

reports now have been coming in of anarchist elements operating within southern cancodia, spanning the nations of Nostrapais and Verikimlund. Intelligence on this matter is currently slim to none, but assets will be working to understand the goals of these cells, and will continue to monitor the situation as sees fit. Recommend the Naval Signals Intelligence Vessel Sânvaci be sent to assess the situation further and keep tabs on the situation at hand.

If contact is made with these anarchist cells at some point, work with the General Political Department to understand and evaluate how they should be treated. Continue to remove all religious terrorists, and monitor all incoming ones. Recommend a travel ban for Nostrapais, Verikmlund and Chi-Kara be prepared, and staff more Aircraft Protection Directorate units on flight orginating from those countries.

Into the large amphitheater holding the monthly Party Congress, the silence was heavy. For two hours, several member have been debating the anarchist question, pondering whether they should offer them a place in the Party or not. Many arguments where thrown back and forth without much advances on either side. The Party did hold a small anarchist minority but they were much more moderate than those who stirred so much troubles in the streets lately. Seemingly counterintuitively, their representatives argued energetically against the inclusion of a more radical anarchist political formation within the Party, voicing out their disagreement with their violent actions but likely more interested in not being swallowed by another group and becoming even more irrelevant. In the end, little to no progress was made on the matter and the session regarding the country's internal issue was closed to open the one onto international matters. The current Minister of External Affairs climbed onto the stage, followed by the representatives of the Nostrapaisian Church and the Nostrapaisian Islamic Foundation, the two major religious associations within the country. The presence of these two figures caused some surprise among the spectators. The Party had for policy to never intervene in religious matters as long as they weren't threatening the Constitution and the Country. The Minister immediately cut down the protests.

"Comrades, I see your surprise but fear not, for once, we are all speaking with the same voice. Today, I have come here to tell you about a joint resolution taken between the Government, the Church and the Islamic Foundation. All together, united in our disgust for hatred, segregation, united in our love for freedom, in our longing for equality, we will firmly condemn the Demitorean government."

On the large screen behind the stage, the images of security officers arresting priests in various attires appeared, followed by the discourse of the Demitorean Commissar for Security and Domestic Preparedness, subtitled. After some minutes of silence, the Minister resumed his speech.

"In a sickening display of ignorance and intolerance, religious figures and fidels were arrested all around the country. The government, pretending to act upon the people's will, deemed that any and all religion unchecked by them would be the root for terrorist organization. Forgetting everything the dark age and recent tragedies taught the world on the matter of international terrorism, they themselves acted against the very interest of those they swore to serve, likely creating what they pretend to protect the people from. Indeed, had they questioned themselves, had they acted in coordination with religious figure and experts, they would have known that, when the very belief of the people is threatened, they rise to protect it. The Demitorean government, by its unjustified authoritarian derive, is responsible for the blood of innocents to be spilled and thus is illegitimate in its very existence, condemning its people instead of protecting them, tyrannizing them instead of serving them, strangling their spiritual aspirations instead of allowing them to blossom ! It is a shame that such an agreement between politics and beliefs in our country is only to be found when there is suffering for others to denounce but we do hope this marks a new beginning in the relationship between the Religions and the Party."

The two religious leaders nodded and, under solemn applause, the government and the two majoritarian religions in the country held hands for the first time in decades.

The Congress of The Socialist Union of Northeastern Cancodia

The large hall was in uproar, every delegate arguing over the resolution. “Christ, it’s always like this...” Valerie mumbled to herself. The big news in the Meridan, beyond the fallout of the Kora treaty, was Demitor causing another damn stir. Someone had proposed a resolution to condemn their latest mess, banning religion and arresting some leaders (Valerie couldn’t be bothered to read up on who) because of terrorism or some other claim. But now that it was before the Congress, it was her problem. She raised her voice as best she could, hammering her fist on the desk. “SILENCE.” The room quickly quieted, the former partisan hero imparting fear and respect in the older delegates, and a more begrudging quiet in the younger delegates. “Thank you. Now that our initial opinions have been voiced, we will allow time for speeches.” The first to seize the opportunity would be Denise Atsem, member of the Libertarian faction. While young, they had quickly grown to be one of the largest of the youth factions. She took the podium.

“Companions! Today we stand looking upon a great injustice, and choose whether we shall stand on the side of right or wrong. With Demitor banning religion, they have exercised far too much control over their people! We must condemn this governmental overreach! The people have the right to believe whatever they might want, or join whatever organizations they might wish! Does any member of this council truly believe this action is in the best interest of the Demitorian worker?” There were murmurs throughout the hall. “We must condemn these evils at once, and take further action to encourage them to reverse these wrongs!” She stepped away from the podium, the congress satisfied with a fairly typical speech from a Libertarian. Next was Colin Fisher, a Kerthenian immigrant who immigrated after becoming enthralled by the ideas of the Internationalists. Approaching the podium, Fisher would begin his statement.

"Workers of the world! Look to your sides. You are all children of the revolution! We may have different genders, or races, or ages, but we are all united by our goal to make the world a socialist place for all to live. We mustn't let our petty squabbles over differences in ideology hinder that vision. Though it may seem unreasonable to you, Demitor clearly had its reasons for this decision. Issuing a condemnation only proves to further fracture the already disunited left in the world! We must be building alliances, not tossing solidarity in the Meridan to the wind! One must respect their differences so that we may come together as partners in the world revolution!" As he returned to his desk, some would cheer, others would shift uncomfortably in their desks, agreeing with the concept of socialist fraternity, but not to the extent he preached. In the awkward atmosphere, a smaller, glasses-toting man would make his way to the podium. One of the younger members of the Congress, Sergei Zarotsy of the Futurist faction would adjust his suit before beginning his short speech.

"Comrades! We live in the greatest age of mankind. We pride ourselves on our progress over the rest of the world! Why are we condemning Demitor for casting off the chains of the past and moving forward? We all know the troubled history the church and us socialists have. It is not inconceivable that they could be plotting to undermine the revolution and keep the people locked in the past. To move forward and create a great socialist society, these traces of antiquity must be cast off as we accept the future. We cannot fault Demitor for something that they have the right to do! They have taken a step into advancement, and we should instead be commending them!" As usual, the Futurist was met with mixed response, but returned to his seat pleased. But all debate over his speech would disappear as an elder man would stand from his desk. With a scar running along his face, and blind in his right eye, Konstantin Chernoko of the Red Army Faction would take his time reaching the podium, his footsteps the only sound as the hall grew silent.

"Children of the revolution!" Konstantin began to cough from the strain of the shout, before taking a sip of water and continuing. "Listen to yourselves. Arguing over whether we should let just another dictator crush his people under his boot. I gave my youth fighting for the revolution. I gave my eye for freedom. And I would do it all again. Where did that revolutionary spirit go? The spirit that carried us to victory, to our great union? Instead, you see fit to defend the despots, the totalitarians, in the name of "progress" or "unity". If the worker is kept quiet and submissive, then neither of those can happen. Standing aside as freedoms are crushed... you are no better than the monarchy or the capitalists." Chernoko stepped back from the podium, returning to his desk as the hall continued its silence. The debate would continue, though with far less passion. The opponents would relent, agreeing to pass the resolution, so long as they got a say in the committee.

On Recent Events in Demitor.

Recently, Demitor has begun a crackdown on the religious leaders in their nation, as well as banning the public practice of these religions.
Although the SUNC acknowledges the national defense reasons for these actions, we must condemn them as a severe overreach by the regime of Demitor.
The church and the revolution have had a past of conflict, but that is no reason to tread on the freedoms of the people. The liberation of the worker is the cornerstone of socialism, and this is far from that.
Taking these factors into effect, The Congress of the Socialist Union of Northeastern Cancodia demands that Demitor gives these religious leaders a fair trial, validated by outside observers, and that the restrictions upon religion be lifted.
If you're wondering, yes, Doxia and the SUNC are not the same. Try your best not to get confused.
