I did that in the 1950s...

"Despite many other nations switching to Semi-Auto Battle Rifles, or Assault Rifles, Norcourt was still stuck with it's old M1896 Bannerman-Croft Bolt Action Rifle. Experimentation during World War 2, led Norcourt to study the M1 Carbine, and the French MAS-46 Prototypes. Combat, was known to be taken place at 300 yards, average, while lighter and faster cartridges were were also something key to modern combat. They attempted to use the .30 Carbine cartridge, however, it was seen as two weak, and too restricted to import. The obvious choice was the new 7.62x39mm Russian cartridge, used in their new Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947, rifle. Considering how many Bannerman rifle stocks there were, along with fully finished rifles, Norcourt decided to convert the rifles to save money. All in all, the M2, saw service from 1953, all the way up to 1975, being replaced by a gun for another story..."
BUT perhaps we can still do that with a full rifle, and full rifle cartridge. Also, I'm still upgrading to another Bannerman-Croft, the M1896
