SDFS Sealgaire.
"Missile launches!", the radio officer shouted from what he heard from one of their ASW-helicopters.
So unfriendly after all..., Curadh thought - they had detected the fleet approaching them a while ago - or rather their AWACS aircraft, detecting, but not attacking. It was an arrangement of the kind You don't attack me, I don't attack you, but apparently, the other side thought differently.
Of course, a Utility helicopter was not a full fledged AWACS aircraft, but one could do one thing or the other with it. For example aiming missiles and Electronic Countermeasures.
Radar said, that it were around two dozen missiles launched at them, fast approaching the 9th Corvette Squadron. Five Scoth-class Corvettes.
"Let's send them to Calib.", Curadh ordered with a frown.
SDFS Criosantamam.
The SDFS Criosantamam was a new ship, originally stationed in Scilly, just before transferred to Wembury.
Captain Liam Nua of the Tribe of Galway, commander of the squadron and its flagship, received his orders with a nod.
That nod served as the signal for his officers as well.
The ESM systems were working continuously, collecting data, listening to the electromagnetic waves of the AWACS and now missiles. The missiles were apparently guided by the AWACS aircraft, which they couldn't really jam with the Scoths, as those lacked ECM-systems - what they had, though, were MASS.
Multi-Ammunition Softkill Systems.
Thanks to the helicopters, they knew, that the missiles were coming, but could not establish target locks onto them as the utility helicopters were not really part of the Battlescape Network.
As the corvettes turned to face the enemy with their bows, the highly advanced decoy launchers went to work. MASS dispensed decoys operating on all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to confuse guided missiles and the sensors guiding them.
The first decoys went into the air, confusing a few of the missiles, but not all by a long shot.
Meanwhile, the first missiles went into the air as well, from the VLS-shafts - long-range surface to air missiles, aimed at the AWACS aircraft, two for each. Selkie ship-mounted SAMs could switch between being active radar homing and infrared homing, exploding once being close enough and sending out 200 high-velocity tungsten shrapnels, shredding any enemy hit to pieces.
Then the corvettes' radar finally got a lock onto the incoming missiles, finally enabling them to act against them.
The Ceantar C-84 Mark Is, two on each Corvette, five Corvettes, plus small point defense missiles from the VLS went to work, shooting down missiles, including with support of the other Selkie-ships.
Two passed through the first line of corvettes: A second later, the SDFS Balla was hit by one of them, causing massive damage to the older Sciath-class Corvette, effectively taking her out. The other missile was destroyed in the air by CIWS-fire from closest range, scattering shrapnel onto the SDFS Maev, killing a sailor and wounding three others, while bits and pieces of shrapnel punched into the ships of the 9th Corvette Squadron, wounding eight sailors. Besides scratches on the paintwork, SDFS Anamóine lost her radar, but not her datalink, so she was mostly fine, as long as she staid in the group.
The game was on.
SDFS Cnoc.
The Flagship of the 15th Fast Gunboat Squadron provided cover for its charges, 18 Faolchu-II-class FACs.
Thanks to the enemy opening fire first, there was no doubt about their intentions, so they could return fire as they pleased - and that was their forte.
As the last incoming missiles were shot down, as the SAMs went up towards the AWACS, the 15th Fast Gunboat Squadron turned to starboard, while SDFS Rós and SDFS Maev were moving forward to make up the vanguard. The Fleet Oiler Wadebridge began with rescue operations onboard the heavily damaged Balla.
With their move, the game continued.
On nearly all relevant frequencies for open broadcasts, a call went out: "This is Vice Admiral Amy Curadh of the Tribe of Wicklow aboard SDFS Sealgaire. Whoever just fired at us, be aware, that this was an act of aggression and that we will reply accordingly. If you want to retreat, now is your chance."
