Presumably, the SSBN has fired several salvos of missiles some time ago. There's now an ASW aircraft hunting for it. They might have a big, powerful radar that can find a sub at missile launch depth. A subs sensors are also probably sensitive enough to pick up the radar before it gets into detection range (plus if the ASW aircraft is using sonoboueys, they can hear those hitting the water on sonar).

An engagement would probably go like this:

1. The ASW aircraft reaches the area where the SSBN was last spotted firing missiles and begins using it's new radar to search for the sub.
2. The sub spots the aircraft closing in with it's big, obvious radar and sonoboueys.
3. The sub pops it's own bouey to find the aircraft and get target information.

This is the tricky part. As soon as the bouey hits the surface, the aircraft will immediately become aware of it. It's up to the sub's element of surprise to get the first shot before the aircraft begins an attack run.

4. The sub locks on and fires it's missile, before cutting the bouey loose and making best speed away. The bouey still has enough battery power to guide the missile to the target with as much accuracy as is possible.
5. Hopefully, the aircraft is destroyed and the SSBN can try to escape again before the ASW plane's friends can arrive.

Or better idea. 1 and 2 are the same. and then the following happens.

3. The sub drops everything and dives as quickly as is safe down below the thermal layer and then then sits quietly.

True, but I'd like more options. Littoral waters, for example, might not give the opportunity for exceptionally deep dives. Attack submarines could also use the deeper water to keep enemy subs at a depth where they can be spotted by patrolling aircraft or risk an engagement.

Radar is used to sweep the surface of the waters, and only baaaaarely reaches below the surface. The you have anything above the surface, it'll be spotted.

Well I know that. It's mostly because things breaking the surface of the water stand out more against the flat sea. I was thinking a really powerful active array might be able to see deeper and pick out dense objects like submarines out of the volume of water as though it wasn't even there.

Actually, it would go like this:

1. ASW aircraft spots the missile launch, radios coordinates in
2. ASW does a quick radar sweep of the area to find periscopes
3. If fixed wing, it would drop down low and drop passive buoys and does a MAD search. If rotary, would dip down sonar.
4. Sub now is on the run. Assuming it wants to fight and attempt an attack with your equipment, this would happen:

5. Sub launches buoy. ASW locates and drops depth charges, torpedoes, or ASROC.
6. By this time, the area is swarming with more than one aircraft.
7. Sub is destroyed before it can even launch a missile or lock on.

You wouldn't have time to get a radar lock, or even a radar sweep. You wouldn't be able to detect radar from a depth, either, simply because the radio waves needed wouldn't be able to penetrate the water.

Oh, don't be so pessimistic. You're assuming that the ASW aircraft is already looking there and has locked on faster than the sub. Plus, there's always the rapid-fire capability VLS allows for. And if we do spot that many aircraft, engaging probably isn't the best option in the first place.

It's not power, it's frequency. No amount of microwaves (standard for radar) will penetrate water because they are all absorbed by it. The amount of power needed to hunt a submarine with microwave radar is the power needed to boil away the ocean its in. You can switch to other frequencies that penetrate water, but they're not as good for small arrays of antennas, so you end up with bigger radars to achieve the same effect. Usually impractically big radars.

That said, the TRIDENT idea basically makes sense to me, and I think it's a useful system to be developing for your subs.

Thank you. Though you should be aware we do have a player who's gone and made such impractically large radars (the size of jumbo jets) for similar purposes.

Tactically, TRIDENT might be pointless. But Type 15 subs have plenty of space to spare for the system, so it shouldn't be too harmful to give it some kind of hard defense against aggressors.

This was an optimistic outlook. This was assuming that you weren't killed when they launched ASROCs, and wasn't already picked up by the MAD. Besides. You already set it up with the aircraft already there.

By the way, there is no "lock on" needed with ASW. I literally only need to find you. At that moment, you're dead. Absolutely dead.

That's called airborn early warning and control system. AEWACS for short. And the kind of radar you'd need to do that can't be fielded on that kind of aircraft.

I didn't. I don't think I'll actually be using TRIDENT this time around. Only if the opportunity presents itself. I'm taking your argument into consideration. That's why I asked about your ASW procedures, so I can refine it's use. Perhaps it could, instead, be used as an ambush weapon, targeting non-ASW aircraft in surprise attacks. Fighter jets on patrol, cargo aircraft, or VIP transport aircraft, perhaps...

Congreveopia's good at writing the software for autonomous drones. Hint, hint.

I use the AW609 (IC, that should probably be the Cell 609, given that it's made by Cell Helicopters in my nation) for fast local VIP transport.

Electronics happen to be the FAP's specialty. While Congrevopia's big on mechatronics and other robotics-related tech, the Ports focus more on computers and sensors like Radar and Sonar. As a result, we're very skilled in the realm of SIGINT and information warfare. We're also big on biomedical technology, like prosthetic limbs and surgical tools.

I think we might both benefit from a little cooperation in this sector~

Obviously, my economy does everything, like any good diversified economy. But that goes without saying.

In terms of specialization, electronics is a wide field. Nobody can really specialize in all of it at once. Congreveopia's major talents are robotic systems and software, with software being the more central portion of that. Our most outstanding industries are things like information technology, logistics management software, search engines, artificial intelligence, and such. All the "making a complete arrangement of computers do something useful" side of electronics. A corollary to that is that we also manufacture the most high level of complete systems that need complicated software, because it capitalizes on the software expertise. Things like robots, drones, automated warehouses, data centers, etc. The sort of big-ticket items that, once purchased, are going to need very complicated software to run on them.

What we don't do so much is smaller electronics, like a car's stereo system or the controls for a crane. We might write software for an autonomous crane or a car's stereo system that works with cloud services to pick songs the driver will like, but if it's just a simple software job, we're not so interested, even if it is mounted on very complicated hardware.

Additionally, we also don't do components much. Even the Pack Avenger, the pride of the Congreveopian Air Force and C-Nova Aerospace, is assembled off of international sensors, CPUs, radars, etc. Based on what you said, I believe your electronics sector is more focused on making high quality specific electronics components (like cameras, radar, cell phone antennas, etc.) If that's the case, then trade would be awesome, because that is exactly the sort of stuff Congreveopia imports most. (So, from whom do you import the transistors, wires, diodes, etc. that you use in those components? :p )

Free Asian Ports wrote:Also, my idea would have been for a Dassault Falcon-type jet with a layout similar to that of a Harrier (drooping wings, Pegasus engine and nozzle placement, etc). Actually, I really need something like that for my President's plane. Congreveopia will totally buy that if you come up with a practical plan for it.

Free Asian Ports wrote:Thank you. Though you should be aware we do have a player who's gone and made such impractically large radars (the size of jumbo jets) for similar purposes.

See, I never know what's actually unrealistic in radar. Sure this seems like too much of a reach to ever be useful, but then you look at something like this and realize that militaries really want better radar.

Free Asian Ports wrote:Well at least it's possible, if not the most well received idea.

I still think it makes sense. If a sub's being hunted by an ASW airplane, it's already [bleep]ed up big time, but that's no reason not to try and give it more of a fighting chance. And using a buoy rather than a radar periscope to locate the enemy aircraft seems to me like it would be useful (the whole underwater anti-air missile launcher thing is already being done IRL, if I remember correctly).

EDIT:

I'm revising my opinion on this in light of some points that DeN made to me on the PW Skype that I didn't get from his posts here. Basically, traditional radar mast techniques have the advantage that you can raise them, fire, and escape, all before the hostile aircraft has narrowed down the location of the radar return, offering more stealth than a buoy, which will be constantly available for radar to view. In light of this, I think there are still cases where TRIDENT would be useful, but not enough to usually justify the space it would take. It would be totally fine for the FAP navy to have different opinion on how useful it will be than me, though, and only time will tell who's right.

VIPs might be worth it. Generally submarines really care about stealth, though (one would almost think that they'd be willing to go to the trouble of moving the entire ship underwater if it would make it more stealthy -oh, wait, right). So I doubt a submarine would ever consider a mere fighter patrol or cargo plane worth compromising its position to kill.

Some things like transistors and diodes are made in the FAP, but mostly we get them from places like Esgonia or Equator, where the labor is cheaper and these parts can be made for less than a penny.

Yeah, I'm thinking something like the size of a Falcon 20 with a high shoulder mounted wing. It's going to have two or three upgraded Pegasus engines powering four lift nozzles (much in the same manner as the harrier). I think the main market would be for VIP transportation or electronic-type support for STOVL carriers. Perhaps VIP transportation to distant oil rigs, or to airfields with perhaps not the best runways, or in very large, but very dense cities. Low rate production should be sufficient, as I expect orders totaling no more than a couple hundred aircraft.

Congreveopia wrote:VIPs might be worth it.

Psychological warfare might also be good. But it might not be worth it...

A lie doesn't become truth, wrong doesn't become right, and evil doesn't become good just because it's accepted by a majority.
