Beta Burning (FT, TG for entry)

Postby Sarian Raider Clans » Wed Feb 03, 2016 2:56 pm

Beta Sector, EV Carinae

The air was filled with swirls of red, made from a super fine rock dust that got into everything. The wisps are not thrown up by planetary atmosphere but by the eternal bathing morass of flares and charged particles from the great red star that dominated half the world. The ground was covered in dull rocks that had been sand blasted to ruin and had never seen life. All of it was encapsulated by a horizon that was the sort of almost rolling pin flat only a few billion years of nearly zero geological activity could earn and was only now once again drawn to action as the stars tidal forces drew upon it.

The nameless planet was an old dead world, tidally locked around a star on its death bed. Of little use to anyone till it finally keeled over and far from trade lanes or anything passing as civilization.

The things sprawled on its surface were not local or natural, a great multi kilometer morass of miss matched antennae, dome like scanners and gaping waveguides, all apparently stripped from a dozen species starships and brands. All of these and a selection of shafts were in the spaceward lee of a supergiant blasted mountain range, the dull shape of half a dozen types of thermal convertors on crude terraces on its surface. None of it bothered to hide. It was after all passive and who would dare EV Carinaes world swallowing pulsations to find it, a star a thousand times more vast than the average G type, whose distortion wracked surface could surge out three levels in magnitude.

A pair of suited figures tramped across an elevated walkway between the towering antennae, caked dust pouring off the surfaces as they passed. Occasionally they would stop to seemingly twist a section of railing, or broadcast a specific signal or simply step on certain points before progressing. The suits were widely different, one was lithe, screaming motion, the other a bulky tool laden thing who’s worn surfaces said above all else that it had seen far too much of the void. Between them they slowly took down a plate from one of the towers that appeared no different to the others, replaced it and returned by a different path to where they had come from on the edge of the antennae farm.

The spindly legs of what could only be a somewhat modified Sarian Beheader class assault corvette sitting atop a rough grid of metal cargo slats formed into an excuse for a landing pad sat waiting for them, its dorsal turret replaced with the dull form of a box launcher, the hull and general condition far in excess of what was the norm. If one could read the swirling garish Sarian glyphs apart from the clear warnings of a heraldic craft the name Dancing knife was prominent.

The hissing of the airlock took longer than usual, the dust had gotten on and in everything, even the thick block of waxen putty the tool covered suit had proffered to get it out of crevices took effort to work out the fines before the overhead glyphs changed and atmosphere rushed in.

The slim suits helmet folded away in moments into a thick decorated back neck guard, the others hand undid with a heavy click of clasps. Unspeaking both assisted each other out of the heavy outer wear to reveal vastly different sets of clothing, one almost formal, and the other utilitarian with carefully organized sets of ribbons. Then the accoutrements, symbols of rank, tools, weapons belts, the thin metal survival torcs. Finally after inspecting each other the lithe figure grinned and opened the inner lock, one hand holding a bulky void proofed data storage device.

Mak R Sekth, Herald of the Sarian raider clan Sekth rinsed out his mouth with a shot of luke warm plastic flavoured recycled water from his suits dispenser before striding inwards, the fading green tone of his companions skin showing his by comparison relatively young age just as the brocade of thermal superconductor mesh was in contrast with the ribbons that showed their respective castes. The economical moves of the gun warden as he took the device from a proffered hand and went down to the avionics bay to gently ministrate to it at odds to his own impatient strutting up to the Beheaders cramped con.

“Time to the next flare?” snapped out of the side of his mouth that was already smirking as the skilled fingers of his second wife neatly began gently moving his hair back into position and carefully began inserting the half dozen blades that normally were buried in its depths.

“Four hours” The reply was a gruff thing, the tone and accent simple, its owner long accustomed to being far from the height of social strata.

He sat back in the command chair, neatly linking into its restraints in a motion long practiced then glanced upward again taking in the halo of displays now appearing around him.

“Time we were offski then, helm get us off this dust ball and back into the shadowland and plot course back to the Pai Sarav, Guthri I want a jump as soon as ready.”

Another hand snaked out and grasped warmed steaming drink as it gently tapped through another set of flickering glyphs as they began to cascade down one set of displays as the data began to be processed from the module, the whining rumble of the Beheaders engines building in the background.

“Good plenty of transit time for Guthri to set up the queries… run the numbers Van dear I want a nice little logistics line ready for the Prince”

He grinned again, a horrid mix of avarice and blood lust as his first wife gently sat and brought up the endless dancing data. As Dancing Knife reached orbit and then went elsewhere the array sat silent again. Listening.

Deep Space, three thousand light years above the galactic plane, Coreward.

Reality was forced to comply with will and technological contrivance. When Dancing Knife reappeared it was in the deep dark, no star close to warm it but she was not alone. At first it was a few moving points in the distance, then her brethren surrounded her in motion, most appearing worn, endlessly used and patched, the outcaste got little care more than basic utility. They danced around the Knifes smooth course like thrown rice, some in tight groups that could not be called formations, others disordered clouds, some even firing upon each other.

This cloud of murder and madness was thick and dense but not endless. The cavorting escort swiftly broke off as the first rings of real capital craft appeared, and a neat duo of Bladed gunships took up position, the princes sigil prominent as around them families fought out both stylized duels and the less pleasant bloody affairs of rivalry, politics and grudge without the simple honesty of the outcaste. The mass of vessels got more complex, re purposed destroyers, liners, dumpy cargo vessels and industrial craft, huge jagged edged cruisers studded with docking ports and covered in craft not to dissimilar to the Dancing Knife. Finally almost hidden by heavier craft something vast and glittering was approached and entered, the clan symbol clear and its aesthetics screaming of something from another age.

The Pai Sarav. A Sarian Juggernaut. Its hull worn with impacts and repairs, surfaces coated in half a hundred systems dust. A System dominator, the home of any self respecting Sarian clans Prince and his or her royals. A brutal slab sided beast of a void craft, twelve gigatons of haik armour, gunnery bays, missiles and vast hangers designed to make a mockery of smaller ships.
The Pai Saravs port great bay was the princes demesne rather than the clans, it was filled with well-ordered light and action, a line of bladed frigates overhead undergoing extensive work. No piles of scrap or constant shanty like markets or swirling ill ordered mass of figures making up for a lack of automation here, no here was filled with what could be considered industry.

The great bays angular columns were inscribed by generations of clerics and there brutish thugs moving the grey and silver bulk of medical gear or escorting lines of high bourne children between the bays various artifices and the gun and shipwardens who would teach them. The brightly dressed lower ranked gunwardens, there vac suits with their prominent torso trauma plates covered in a thousand ribbons and markings for kills singing to each other in guncant moved overhead on gantries that dipped into vessels, rail cart after rail cart of munitions and supplies in constant motion, and the ramping of the crew in general filled the air broken only by the dull thunk of the maintenance mechanisms and the dull constant background rumble of the Juggernaut’s drives that permeated everything.

As the Knife clunked almost silently into its well worn Herald marked spot on the bays left wall and unfolded Mak took a deep breath of ships air before proceeding keelward.

The ancient anti spalling padded black corridors positively were alive with traffic and much of it to his disdain the sort that even he, resplendent in his position had to stop to allow past for the good of the ship. A concept whose violation on any major sarian vessel would very quickly see one even of his rank trying to breathe vacuum before there corpse was thrown into the recycling towers. As he was preceded forward things became more official, guards now at every junction, great barriers that could cut even a grand corridor in half in a moment, turrets and even the silent trios of Forger armored knights standing watching the passing morass. The quality of the corridors fabrics went up, now decoration and great shock proofed cases containing antiquities, arts and treasures but most vaunted of all objects the captured remains of enemies, there banners or shards of ships, some still in rad proof cases. The great seals of Saria and the Sekth were now a constant, the decking no longer bare flooring tramped by a thousand feet and worn with time but clean and shining with fresh coats of lacquers, stains and even sections of polished marbles and stones.

Mak did a final check of his court dress insuring the polish on his pistol grips was to a high shine before his metal clad feet entered the prince's own presence. It after all would not be proper for a herald to be seen in anything less. The final void lock guards eyes glittering dangerously as they watched him pass through its great metal toothed vestibule.

The chamber was vast. Covered from top to bottom in the jingoistic remnants of something other as well as the instrumentation and mechanism to control a fleet considerably larger than the clans present offering. Huge stellar cartographic displays, cascading masses of local read outs on star ships, all were manned, while below in the cable sections many laid open dozens of the Forge Wardens female engineers hissed orders at each other as the entire edifice was readied for action. To its rear the great throne sat high above it all, the three hundred steps each marked with a dozen ship lords logos upon metal tiles, there positions in the hierarchy at least as the prince saw them carefully moved up or down the ladder as he saw fit. The great operations positions were manned by the children of ship lords, deft nimble fingers dancing upon their surfaces as behind them there tutors and executors should their parents turn traitor kept watch over their every move.

The prince himself was reclined on something expensive, dark and wooden in front of the main strategy pits displays. His finely wrought suit of metal, fabric and expensive old xantian league plastics attended by half a dozen of the finest broken and his own harem. Mak came to a stop as he entered the attendants field, and saluted. Without turning Xav V Sekth, prince of the Sekth and lord of every being he surveyed at least in the room waved him forward, the gaily if violently dressed crowd of ship lords, attendants and clerics parting before the herald as he stalked towards royalty. Xavs voice was dry, almost too dry, as if an artful removal from emotion and distance could elevate him from the petty goings on of those about him.

“So you bring me a prize only a herald can deliver then”

“Yes my lord prince"

The prince indicated the old man with the sharp amber eyes, not just a Gun Warden but at least in Clan Sekth, The Gunwarden. The old man stared at the herald straight in the eyes, his presence unwavering by the nobles who surrounded him. Those who crossed a Gunwarden soon found there ships less than well fed with munitions or worse surprises in wait.

“The arrays records match what the merchants and wretches we have already.. spoken to say. The entire sector is falling into decay my prince, ships fleeing without much if any order from a half dozen threats. Its ripe. But too ripe for just us alone.”

As he spoke systems, stars, clips of glyphs and the flickering morass of ship to ship and ship to thing action were played overhead.

“Herald?”

“It is as The Gunwarden states my lord prince, the Sector is bleeding but the rivers are too deep for us to drain alone and retain who we are. The orders have spoken on this my lord and they assure me that this is a most ..viable move upon your part.”

The prince withdrew into himself for a moment eyes dancing across the boards as Mak continued.

“Were we to try this against the Rexiani, the HSE or the damn Long Patrol …but they simply do not care here. It is too far away, too..too foreign to them my Prince.”

A grim smile broke across the Princes face and Mak inwardly at least sagged in relief.

Xavs left hand, encapsulated in a metal studded glove wove forth and the display changed to a sector, then sub sector then a single moon studded gas giant dominated system, a line of fleeing ships due to arrive, glyph estimates overhead neatly counting down. His voice for the first time showing the hint of something. Hunger possibly as from between his dry lips words flowed as he was almost lost in thought.

“Here. .yes Here. After all…”

His other hand wrapped around a long used and disturbingly for a Sarian green colored leather wrap on his own pistol.

“I do like to play with things before annihilation. Send the signal and dispatch your lesser’s Herald, and let them come. Let them all come. They will, after all be late."

Beta 879865R

The system was small, an M5 V dwarf star with only a few companions. CLosest was a rock world, barren and alone on it's orbit. Next an asteroid belt, not terribly dense. The remnants of another rocky planet. Farther out, a Jovian hung on it's orbit. Framed by dazzling rings, three large moons moved around it in a slow procession, seventeen smaller moons mingled closer. Either remnants of the same planet that created the asteroid belt or shattered moons from the Jovian's early millenia. Farthest out, a larger Jovian, this one sporting a full party of companion moons. One large body that had either smashed or dragged all others out of it's territory. Forty six smaller moons slung around on irregular orbits, evidence of their larger sibling's brutality.

Far above the orbital plane, a purple/black tear in space spread open, a swarm of drone craft exiting first, the tear growing wider and rounder. First came the drones, big enough to fit in a bottle rack and armed with a series of cameras. Dozens of them streamed through. The first vessel appeared from the writhing space within flanked by more of the tiny camera drones. The vessel' mirror finished hull shining in the star's glow. As it slipped free, another two emerging before the first had even cleared. Three more following almost immediately after, the six ships breaking off into a rough ring around the rift. No sooner had they cleared the rift than another two vessels slipped free, these nearly double the size of the first. A beak-like knife sharp prow all but cut space itself as hard points twitched, turrets slewing idly on their traverse. The two vessels, unmistakably warships, broke off from each other as strike craft dropped behind fanning into the void around the growing formation.

The opening in the void continued growing, the bow of a massive vessel sliding through. A Heavy freighter, engines burning a dim blue, behind it another vessel came into view. The MKI Super-freighter, roughly four kilometers of ugly metal stacks, prefaced with a dome, and ending with a pair of large engines. A series of heavy tethers trailing behind as the massive freighter's burden was pulled drudgingly on. Nearly fifteen kilometers of gleaming metal cylinder, rounded at each end and covered in symmetrical bracing dotted with small modules. As the ship cleared the breach, a second heavy freighter trailed behind, followed closely by four more craft, tiny by comparison, in close formation, the three smaller ships peeling away from a ship roughly the same size as the first two warships, but bearing a vastly different silhouette.

The nine small vessels set themselves up in a loose formation around the freighter and it's cargo. One of the leading two warships discharged a tachyon pulse, mimicked thirty seconds later by the second. A veritable swarm of the tiny drones began to spread out in all directions. About half the strike craft had spread out to sweep the system, the remaining craft stuck around in close proximity to the freighter and it's cargo. The smaller vessels maintained their formation. The convoy was aimed to slide into an elliptic equatorial orbit. Leading the convoy, the Karnack and Excursionist Flenser class destroyers trailing just behind them was the heavy freighter Old Shaky. The nine Wolf frigates encircling the super-freighter Cataphract and it's towed cargo. Bringing up the tail of the convoy, the heavy freighter Wandering Eye. Majestic Raving, a Kergerin class cruiser acting as rear guard.

Hellcat starfighter, Claw 1 Actual

Niveen flinched slightly when the gunship slid into formation with his flight group, seamlessly matching the fighter's pace. His Hellcat hummed beneath him, it's drives a dull buzz. His com crackled to life a moment later. “Our target is the first Jovian, we're going to sweep it before the eggs start their refueling run.”

“Copy that, I'll race you there.” Niveen cracked as he throttled his fighter up, the dull buzz rising like a thunderclap into a dull roar. Within fractions of a second the rest of his wing had followed suit, the gunship paused a moment before it snapped back into lose formation. He zoomed his tactical display out with a thought, bringing it to focus on the first of the two Jovians in the system. As his gaze lingered the display zoomed in further, detailing the rings. The three large moons and seventeen smaller moons were displayed along with orbital tracts. As if watching, the com cracked to life again. “Lets fan out and check the outer moons first. Claw four, take this moon, Claw five, take that one. Claw six, you'll hold back here till I start my sweep of the rings.”

“Copy that Claw Actual.” Niveen's voice was followed by three others repeating the same phrase. Checking the newly appointed objective markers on the tactical map, he corrected his course and maintained the hard burn. The formation started to drift slowly apart as they made early course corrections, the blue glow of fusion torches lighting his cockpit. Niveen watched the Shryyk gunship glint in the light of natural and unnatural fusion fire as it slowly drifted away. If he didn't know any better he'd have sworn Kyn was just another pilot like him, maybe a S'arr, or a fellow Icatan. The casual bored tone in the AI's voice sounded so natural.

Beta 879865R, Gas Giant II, Moon IV,

The ice covered worldlet was almost unbroken save for a few steaming crags and cracks, the torturous clouds of ejecta from a half dozen sections of sea floor vulcanism, the gas giants eternal pull not so gently stretching tectonic activity into existence, and with every orbit shrouding the moon in slow umbrellas of glittering ice crystals.

The modified Beheader cockpit was a darkened place of dull red readouts and few flashing lights, the sound of boiling water from outside muted. Its décor and family markings stripped save for that of the clan itself. A slow counter upon its cockpit giving its crew the time until it would once more need to tap into the thermal harpoon and pump rig that occupied its missile bay. A long line of thermal superconductor lined pipe that led into the colder waters. In its command position sat a figure in full void suit, the ticking of its backpack and the others virtually the only sound.

Fri S Sekth sat back, his heavily built frame tensing against the suits catheters and probes. Those were beginning to get through the numbing agent that he had the cleric dope there contact points with, there were after all some benefits to being even a small ship lord. For the tenth time in an hour he once again checked the battery status compared to the reactor startup power on a side display before gently lowering down the scanner output from its roof mount with one easy long practiced motion and again checks it is ready to go active. Other crews were not so obsessed. Other crews did not get access to the pleasure decks for as long.

A murmur fills the air as displays around the cramped space flicker and change and he gently slides the internal ship com open as now the flicker between the inbound hazy trail of squadrons becomes visible, glyphs and arcing spectrographs dancing around the visible drive plumes and the eddies of unnatural distortions along with hosts of output estimates.

“Shipwarden they are now within our passive individual acquisition, check the transmitter”

“Again?”

“Again Para!, we are the princes bladed eye, not outcaste! when we call the clan comes!”

Above the boiling waters, in the volcanic clouds lightning, actinic in intensity arced.

Beta 879865R

The convoy continued it's course, the vessels keeping a rough formation. The Cataphract cut it's engines, the rest of the convoy following suit, having locked in it's heading, the massive vessel settled in for what was to come... Across the system, three Flights of strike craft carried out roughly similar tasks. Flight Wind had been tasked with the first planet and the asteroid belt. Niveen, in Flight Claw, had the first jovian and it's orbitals. Flight Check was to repeat the same process with the second jovian.

Niveen watched the Jovian grow rapidly larger. Making a few final course adjustments, the rest of his wing following his lead, the five Hellcat's holding a close delta formation. He could see the gunship dart ahead of them in a streak of blue-red ending at the orbital plane of the ring. With the enhanced optics of his fighter, Niveen could just barely see the expanding cloud of glinting lights swarm from the dot of light that was the gunship. He watched the cloud mingle in with the soft light of the ring. His attention returning, casually adjusting course. The gun-pods smoothly adjusting to distribute thrust as he led the wing into a high speed orbit, burning off the initial speed as they screamed around the jovian's moon. The engines thrummed behind him as he watched the surface of the planetoid rapidly fill the majority of the cockpit view, shifting to fill all of it as the terrain became a muddy blur alternating rapidly between dark and light. The engine's clearing the orbital path with searing blue light. In Niveen's hud, the fleet-com up-link turned green.

A semi frantic voice crackled on the com "Claw Actual, I've got something!"

"Claw six, report?" Kyn's voice responded in an instant with a concerned inflection.

"I found a big rock." Niveen could hear the deadpan in the pilot's voice, and surpressed a chuckle. The rest of the Flight weren't all so successful.

"Cut the chatter boys, Master says check rocks, we check rocks." Niveen managed a stern tone, still smiling. Kyn's voice chimed in after. "Indeed, I'll update your nav markers..."

Niveen wasn't sure, but he thought he heard an exasperated sigh. He couldn't imagine how a ship could sigh, so he gave a mental shrug, adjusting course with fluid experience, leading his wing to their next flyby target.

The rest of the Flights did much the same, the Ice moon of the second jovian got an extra pass to verify the primary content of the ice. The database flagging it for possible future mining. A number of optic drones dipped into the jovian, sampling the atmosphere by gazing back out at the system's star. The final approach of the convoy, Niveen got to see first hand. The engines humming softly in his ear as he watched from high orbit. The convoy spread out, the escorts concentrating near the front of the formation. The strike craft peeling away on curving streams of soft blue.

Niveen watched the formation sail in, briefly disappearing behind the northern pole of the planet, before reappearing as a streak of orange light, tracing across the jovian sky from north pole to south pole, disappearing once more from his view. The path of the maneuver leaving a darkened scar across the otherwise tranquil cloudscape. The trail disappearing almost as fast as it had been made, giving testament to the roiling fury of the jovian's atmosphere.

The second pass was much less spectacular, and left the convoy parked in a low polar orbit, where they began the tedious process of 'mid flight refueling'.

"How long do we have to sit out here again?" Someone from Claw six, he didn't bother to read the name on his hud. He was about to drone a response when Kyn spoke. "Another six hours, provided none of you slip and hit a rock... We're being tasked back to escort, so pick an orbit that feels comfortable and prepare to wait."

Niveen couldn't help but laugh, shaking his head as he pulled the fighter into a bank and led his wing into a high orbit. Forming up in the orbital track of a wing of Dragon heavy fighters as he responded. “Shield two five copies.”

Beneath the boiling waves..

The glyphs and counters were now far clearer as the ponderous freighters moved into position and Fri gently stroked through the displays settings as his sat over their own consoles.

“Confirmed they have gone to geostationary station keeping shiplord”

Gentle strokes became harsh stabs at displays and controls as a too toothy smile filled Fris mouth as he dialed up the decoy system. The bladed eye may not have the most weapons filled Beheaders at their disposal but they did have some of the most survivable.

“Time for our lord prince then, dump the damn heat rig, helm I want us fastest possible ascent and jump synced with the damn drone transmission, right in the center of the plume. Shipwarden.. Para launch the drone when helm has it synced then give me full reactor output as soon as you can”

As the bladed eye sigil and stealth plate covered crafts second missile bay belched out something clamped on top of a missile body into the water she shuddered upwards, the reality compression drive restarting with a dull shaking thump before the craft began spiraling upward inside the mass of steam and gas. A moment later the drone would detonate, an omni-directional signal shrieking out.

The Pai Sarav

Xavs eyes alone smiled as the bladed eyes data burst filled his more than opulent private rooms with dancing displays.

“You notice they have kept discipline even during such a mundane task. An act to be respected. So first as we always do we sow a little chaos to take their measure, after all it would hardly do for them to be looking in the right direction…and grinders blinded eyes the outcaste are on there way now no matter what we do so, it will buy us time and if the D anchors work well … then we will have all the time we need and the wretches may as well earn their keep. Set our course for the pole.. and keep us subsonic in this muck. Start our ascent to launch height then orbit after we take our ..shot”

One hand gently dug into a bowl of something gelatinous and entirely too lurid orange that a well endowed male broken was holding out while the other waved at the displays now indicating the beak prow warships in turn.

“Well that just won’t do long term, Mak?”

“As we can tell they won't be burning through us easily but they are of considerable power curves ..perhaps Sai? My lord has been looking for him to ah give to the glory of the clan.”

“I knew I liked you for a reason Mak”

Xav pulled a data wand from one haphazardly thrown gauntlets inner lining and waved it through the field of light. As he did a series of images flashed, Fang and Feral class among them.

“We have reasonable estimates.. and grinder take that power curve..but we would do well to not engage them closely without clear advantage.”

He gestured and his fingers danced in mid air calling up the ships coms, the winged buoy trailing miles behind them briefly appearing as iconography.

“Yes .. they should be occupied by now.. Sai and ..ah yes Mara, she has been getting interesting in her blood games and I dislike interesting given someone that interested in the seat.”

A wave and a coms window opens, split, a set of capital ship bridges, red lit and obviously at delay, one command throne occupied by a weasel faced individual who's fur lined chair showed as little taste in aesthetics as did his garish clothing, the other a lithe female in battle dress, traditional shapeless thin grey war coats denoting rank and position worn in figure hiding layers that could not quite hide the obvious muscle tone beneath.

“Shiplord Sai my old friend you will perform a slash strike here, see if they singe, half salvo, draw them in when there occupied by the outcaste, concentrate on this warship. Mara the same with your squadron on the other but I want a pole on the other. Full salvo, empty your racks. Return to point mmm”

The prince gestured and a point twenty light minutes outside the system boundary appeared.

“Theta after a standard random walk and return when you can find an appropriate ..time but only after they have pulled away.”

Sarian First Wave. Two light minutes from polar orbit

Two hundred Beheaders appeared with the dull shriek of space ripping, from there hulls detached an unpleasant variety of things. Huge canisters of crackling obscurant that nearly all immediately burst open, dazzlers, screamers and a rag tag fleet of small craft that had been heavily modified. Shuttles, racers, personal yachts and lifeboats. Anything the Sarians could strap real space drive stacks onto at least once.

Unsafe end of life drives had been added, on top of that single use boosters cobbled far beyond tolerance from a half a dozen races missiles. Reactor shielding removed or added to the nose, systems stripped, most of the radiator mass removed. This swarm of cobbled together vessels from half a dozen races ships, some no more than a few missile drives and a life pod, others once aesthetically pleasing sixty meter in system luxury liners now laden with single shot munitions racks and guns and all surging carelessly inward, in some cases weapons already flickering, hopelessly small lasers stabbing out. The Beheaders took rough formation, though it was more of a mob behind these Reviled sacrifices.

Behind the roiling mass of interference and obscurants came a selection of breakers. Roaring on tails of fire and distorted space, each having half a dozen small crafts drives clamped on. Great logos and symbols harshly worn down their flanks. Once these had been wedge shaped heavy planetary assault shuttles, missile tenders, and small cargo tugs that had been gutted, slabs of thick Sarian haik armor added and packed with warheads and missile drives. Crewed by the honored son to be dead, the Radworn. Those who had done their duty and survived simply too long, or too many times. Those who had gained an illness the clerics deemed too expensive for their caste to have fixed. Those who had become expendable that the clerics had decided had to be informed they had months to live. Those who had strayed too close to a warhead detonation.

As they closed they went from merely swift to truly fast, crews roaring as they had depressed the final levers and that kicked in far more missile drives then there compensators could ever hope to hold back and their lives began to be leached from them. Some would shriek in horror and anger as there drives refused to respond and they began to tumble towards the gas giant, others would vanish in flashes of light as systems failed. Most however would cackle as the precious number of D anchors warmed up, ship's velocity gulped into the glowing morass of the technological insanity that made up the dire devices or the huge kinetic slugs or vast selections of bombs showed they were operational.

Over the com channels nothing but roiling drums could be heard from every ship.

Beta 879865R, Jovian 1, Polar orbit.

It was just around a minute and a half after the Sarian's arrival that the sensor-net picked up the emissions, and the sporadic laser fire. The first Niveen knew of the situation, his fighter disgorged it's supply of submunitions. He saw the wing of Dragon's ahead of him drop their hardpoint missiles, torch drives engaging with blue flashes. The cloud of warheads deftly fanning out and rising up, like a flock of angry birds leaving a tree, the tactical command having triggered a Flight wide launch. Almost simultaneously one of the frigate's discharged it's tac-pulse as the escort warship's tubes erupted with smoke and light. All manner of munition sizes climbed up, some on pillars of blue-white smoke, others seemed to simply accelerate in a chosen direction.

His tactical display started to grow fuzzy as the EMF systems of the task force ramped up to power, He adjusted the sensor intakes, optimizing for the interference. A glittering mist expanding from the warships, primarily a number of the warheads launched from them. The missiles in question bursting at varying distances and blast radius, the largest detonating last. Enveloping the convoy and a massive plume of the polar orbit with sparkling mist. The Jovian's magnetic field forming a brilliant aurora within seconds, the fog dispersing rapidly along the natural magnetic field lines.

Before he lost sight of it, he could see the nine frigates shifting to cover the top axis of the freighter. The entire escort effortlessly re-orienting their formation to face the attacking force while spreading out from the freighter, giving it, and each other, a bit of distance.

Niveen switched his sensors to active, along with the rest of the Shield Flight. He could see gunships forming into teams of three, his own HUD displayed his new assignment as Flight Sword, Three Actual. His radio com crackled to life once more, this time with drums. It took a matter of seconds before a number of voices joined in, humming softly, barely audible over the drums. Then, a chorus of voices broke through the din. ~I am the hangman's son...~

He followed the cue, throttling up to full, his wing forming into a loose standing X. Around him the drive flares of eight other wings illuminated his cockpit. The wrap around display dimming the glare of the torch drives. He joined into the chorus, his voice raising on the com along with the rest of Flight Sword. ~So! I'm the seller of souls, I'm heading for whom the bell tolls!~

Niveen took mental note of the formation around him. Settling into place with the three Shryyk gunships leading the Flight. On his hud he noted two Dragon wings settling in loosely behind. His own Hellcat wing, and the five others, formed into a loose cone following the three gunships. More pillars of blue-white smoke streamed ahead of them, the flashes in the distance illuminating the soupy silver haze around them with punctuated flashes of ambient light. He knew the first wave of munitions was arriving, the second would be right behind. Niveen knew that seconds after those hit, his job would truly begin.

Mingled in with the initial wave of sub-munitions were a slew of optic drones, which would fan out through the cloud and even mingle with the Sarian formations once the leading edge arrived. First the sub-munitions, swarmed en-mass aiming to intersect the trajectory of anything and everything. The proximity of the warheads causing a number of secondary detonations as enemy point defense set to work. The sub-munitions lacked much evasive capability, intended to overwhelm by volume, those that missed their targets would begin a sloping turn to come around for another pass. Mingled in behind however, an array of more traditional missiles of varying sizes. Some of which engaged terminal attack stages, breaking into smaller warheads. Others began firing a searing blue-white particle stream, illuminating space with violent white light.

Sarian First Wave

To be reviled was to be lower than the dead in the resyk tanks. To be reviled was to have failed at being Sarian on a most base level, some matter of faith, law or cowardice. Lower than the most low of non ethnically Sarian. To loose ones self at the dire ministrations of the clerics medical knowledge as memory was cut and locked away to only be released on the death in service to the clan. To be turned into nothing but a disposable tool. The Reviled did not receive pity or notice, faces branded and mutilated to remove identity, or simply covered by formless metal or cheap plastic masks. Forbidden even a moment’s peace when awake and apart from death in combat removed from any honorable escape from it and after the clerics ministrations unable to even consider removing themselves. Most end up dead in damage control parties or reclaimed for parts by the clerics or worse simply thrown into the resyk tanks to increase the ships nutrient counts. Of the reviled there only honorable escape was death in battle, and that was rarely granted. T

Today however hundreds would vanish in light, fire and blood, anti matter munitions marching through there formation as haphazardly armored craft were utterly vaporized, holed, radiated, cooked, shattered by their own mis firing drives and weapons or left gasping for air that would never come as there volatile tanks were ripped away. Even as the mass destruction marched through the swarm they spat a half dozen races directed energy weapons and hails of simple hyper velocity rockets at the enemy, the gravity well greedily assisting even the tumbling and still on vector wreckage ever inwards.

The Reviled did not break even if there ships did and in their final moments many would once more at least remember who they were, calling out there names over and over again across open channels in desperate and entirely too psychotically happy near shrieks. They simply had no personal violtion to stop, instead they continued on, their numbers devastated but they had done there last duty as the few that made it in range desperately attempted to drive themselves into enemy hulls.
There last duty to be ablatives for the unit of outcaste Beheaders whos swiftly moving force shuddered for a moment as half of them launched their anti shipping rated missile payload from underslung pilons. Dull space black pillars armed with variable shaped fusion heads roaring outward in serried ranks, jink thrusters haloeing as the reality compression drive fields built and harmonized, one by one there vectors increased the field intensity building as they far exceeded the drive performance of a single missile with their power curve.

These detonated in rippling nuclear walls and columns of shaped high energy particles, a silent flashing wall of detonations that marched ahead of the Beheaders, blinding both them and those in front of them in a brute force method of munitions clearance. It would not be entirely successful, advanced missiles and off arc targeting relayed data punching through and reducing beheader to glowing outlines of HAIK structural supports or monatomic charged particles as reality compression drives critically failed, trios and quads of them vanishing off the radworns command grids in instants. But they still closed.

The forward now exterior munition stripped group dived towards the small craft, each Beheader corvettes six dual mounted 57mm cannons spitting out a hail of cheaper simple proximity detonating fragmentary rounds, explosively forged penetrators, "dumb" ARAD seekers, metallic hydrogen squash heads, multi spectrum EM dazzlers and simple puffs of obscurant and dew consuming bright dust unless they had a solid lock. When they did however degenerate matter tipped rounds were brought into the mix. Designed to act almost as a capital ships system slaying needle beams the little shield punching hull penetrating ultra dense monsters ripped outwards in noticeably higher velocity bursts.

Mixed in with these and heading down range towards the capital craft, silently and dark however were a hail of taggers, there shrieking beacons silent.

As more beaders begain to die, holed by accurate energy fire that hit a patch or an exposed drive element rather than simply glowing into distortion on the haik the formations closed.

Sarian Second Wave, Feral Class Heavy Cruiser Murderchild

At one moment Sai had been reclining in his command chair, his own throne, master of all he surveyed, one hand slowly circling his second wife's midriff idly as he considered overhead jump and projected impact counters flickering on his personal displays. His amber eyes were drawn to slits as he observed the bridge crew in the dull red battle lighting. Hunched over their stations and deep in there display and control lined pits, private petty concerns and squabbles suppressed, speech for once at a respectable murmur. At least outwardly disputes would be kept silent for the good of the ship but now he watched both them and the position trackers. Waiting for those who failed, though they were few to live long enough to make it to a bridge, or those wishing to use or trigger the failure of others and thus endanger his ship and his lordship for their own petty gains and revenges. His gun wardens at least were trustworthy, more than even most of his own retinue, these and his forge wardens his eyes danced over as one would a valuable vase or artwork.

Out of the main watch pit a cry not of fear but of almost wishful urgency split the steady hum of activity, screens across the bridge flashing into action and the cascade of speech growing.

“First wave are fully engaged my lord, the majority of the in void small craft are now fully occupied in the third engagement circle.”

A dull thud and hiss could be heard as jink thrusters started to warm up, prepping to fire in sequence, the staccato hammer of MH2 capsules being fed into detonation chambers, volatilized and hurled outward by reality compression rings felt rather than heard even in his sanctum. Sai released his second wife, left hand fist forming a fist that gavelled down, right hand dancing across tactical displays as she vanished backward to slide with a sinuous grace into one of the jump seats towards the rear of the bridge, his retinue folding in around her in a triangular wall of armour and muscle, he sitting at their head could hear as their boots collectively audibly locked to the deck. His voice was smooth.

“Jump”

Even as he spoke, even as his fingers had already transmitted half a dozen other responses to various other parts of ships and his loyal agents the Murderchild and her escorts vanished in rippled space to arrive from sunward to the colony fleet, the small craft battle voidward.

Space boiled for a moment then was filled as his line of six Fang class cruisers, drives burning hard already heading straight for the colony fleet. At the rear the dagger of a Feral class heavy cruiser, its clan markings clear, all surrounded by a spreading pool of bladed Beheader corvettes, noticeably in better condition than the outcaste, however the assault shuttles were still firmly upon their external moorings. The aging Sirius republic navy shield generators rippled online, the bubbles of their effect unraveling in multicolored hues and discharges as ill tuned and overcharged emitters crackled.

Processing enemywards for a moment Sai watched counters and spheres of influence dance across displays he eventually as the ranges closed ground out a single word.

“Fire.”

As he did four of the eight Shadowfall capital class anti shipping missiles on the mounts on his ships flanks could be felt detaching before there drives hurled them dancing and bobbing towards the enemy, an escort of beheaders on huge stacked single use boosters in place of their own missiles following them into their fiery end. Ahead of him the Fangs copied his launch, but from there forward prow missile mounts only one of there two anti shipping missiles belched forth, already there lower masses showing in the cruisers movements as the weapons left them behind in awash of light and distorted space.

“Close and clear the way, concentrate fire on ..these two”

A dancing hand denoted targeting pips on two of the frigates Sai’s eyes and hands dancing across displays.

“Rotate our shields sixty forward, hard burn give me five pulses then switch to independent fire, Makeblood, Flenser! increase burn twenty, you will take spearpoint, eighty forward! Switch with Slaughters Daughter and Ripper every three hundred! JUMPTIMER?”

The last was a roar as the firing of weapons built to crescendo’s and the jink thrusters hammered away like a stampede.

“FOURTEEN MINUTES GREAT SHIPLORD! SIX TILL MARA!”

The ship shuddered as incoming fire now reached her shields but outside the angular hull of the Muderchild and the Fangs accompanying her and in part the void itself was covered in blue hues as the multi guns spoke in pulses. The Feral class heavy cruisers ripples of fire launched mixed ready shot far faster than any Beheader or even the Fangs turrets could hope to propel, her fire disturbingly accurate for such a seemingly slipshod construction. Solid sheets of degenerate matter tipped 56mm penetrators, multi spectrum screamers, flares and dupe decoys all escorting a 400mm round filled core of fusion warheads and transuranic sabots. Strange veins and mechanisms in the projectiles hearts flailing out shreds of reality compression fields induced into them by their guns launch rings ever so slightly to guide them on target, the smaller rounds responding in sympathetic resonance, almost as a school of fish that streaked towards the frigates and as the salvoes built in concert the munitions speeding ever more.

Beta 879865R, Jovian 1, Polar orbit.
Sword 3 Actual.

The two forces of strike craft met in nuclear fire. Niveen snarled as an ad-hoc fighter bodily intercepted the Hellcat beside him despite his own cannons putting a burst into the craft. The blue-white bolts over-penetrating soft skinned hull plates and detonating clean through the far side. The two craft erupting into blue-red fire as fused and molten chunks scattered. The twin light particle turrets gave a constant staccato rhythm, flashes of light exploding around him. Deftly handling the controls, he broke off from another head on attempt into a lazy spiral only to abruptly reverse, dancing around a Beheader's line of fire as rounds traced past, missing the cockpit but close enough the display feed dimmed their passing to cover the glare.

As the two strike craft roared passed each other, Niveen torqued the controls. Bringing the body of his fighter hard over using the wing pod thrusters to full effect. The gimbaled pods whining under the strain of rotating against the spin of the fighter. He slid across the stern of the larger corvette, close enough to register emissions warning from the Beheader's drives. As Niveen began the slide, he cut loose with the cannons. Engaging both triggers for full power, lancing blue-white bolts across the craft's engine block. He could see the corvette's turrets catch a fighter trailing just off his wing. Rounds ventilated the lightly armored craft, one of the wing pods erupting in blue fire as the fusion core overloaded. Throttling up to full power on all engines, Niveen broke off with a barrel roll that turned into a corkscrew, letting loose a stream of soft blue bolts at another enemy junker. The wing pods of the Hellcat twisting one way, then another, and back again. The fighter's deftly alternating between their hull mounted and pod mounted thrusters to strafe at unorthodox angles and make truly alien vector shifts despite the obvious use of torch drives.

Escort Lead Actual, Majestic Raving.

“Enemy strike craft are engaged, Sword flight taking casualties.” Reported a cool and gentle voice. The dark room was lit up by a central display. A hologram showing the area. The jovian's north pole occupying a good portion of the floor. The bridge stations and their attendant crew backlit by the same silver mist that had enveloped the fleet. The walls of the room displaying real time feed from hull mounted cameras. In front of them the fog flashed dimly with the distant combat. Ship Master Li'rea, a female S'kan, stood and stepped forward into the hologram. The lithe armored legs trailing through the jovian. With a gesture the display enlarged to show the battle. She watched for a moment, examining the fuzzy representation of a Beheader as it twisted and turned in the fight. Zooming back out, she turned away from the display. “All ships, hold steady. They fight well, but they are outmatched... Tactical, send up a spread of Zaps.”

The display flickered briefly as the gentle voice filled the room again. “New contacts, updating display with location and vector. 89% probability the primary force is engaging.”

Li'rea turned to glare at the display. The new contacts displayed on the newly zoomed out display. Their vector moving in a wide sweeping path. “Give them warning shots with the beams, have kinetics fire for effect. Escorts, use canister. Lead One and Lead Two, single cycle of nets then cobalts for two seconds and repeat until first effect on target, then concentrate fire at will. On my order...”

“Enemy fire inbound.” The gentle voice filled the room as hands worked in tense silence, on her personal HUD, Li'rea noted the confirmation from the other captains. She stiffened slightly, “Fire.”

The room was suddenly illuminated as light erupted around them in the mist. The colors pulsing and wavering, she could feel the slight vibration in the deck.

Sword 3 Actual.

Niveen broke from the engagement, thrusting hard and pausing on the edge of the furball to take account of the situation for a moment. The two remaining fighters under his command sliding in along side. He watched three streaks of blue/red light dance through the chaos. For brief moments the streak would stop, the Shryyk unleashing torrents of sharp blue particle streams. He could see the white glow of their charging spinal weapons. He was about to throttle back in, when the sudden white flash of the reflex cannon pierced the fog, followed by a ripple of secondary detonations from anything bigger than a marble in it's path.

In the distance, his optics picked up emissions spikes moments after his tactical display highlighted the location of what was indicated as the primary enemy force. He could see the flashes of light from their weapon's discharges, and found himself glad to be where he was and not part of Shield Flight. He could see the task force adjusting their position to orient the formation primarily towards the cruisers. His HUD indicating a wave of missiles were on their way to his furball.

A lonely optic drone.

Unthinking, unfeeling synthetic eyes watched the colors dance as it coasted along on it's trajectory away from the battle.

As if in response to the Sarian cruiser's attack, soft blues, intense crimson, and piercing white beams exploded from the cloud of mist enshrouding the convoy. A mix of continuous and pulsed energy weapons danced above, below, and behind the cruiser formation. The onrushing enemy strike craft could bask in the glow of energy discharges, proceeding apparently undetected towards the cloud. The staggered and sustained energy fire attempting to bracket the Sarian cruisers along their path while appearing as if unable to acquire a proper firing solution.

Far less noticeable, and moving considerably slower than the beamed and pulsed energy. The kinetic weapons followed along, also basking in the light of directed energy weapons. The hails of kinetics shredding past each other, anything larger than a few meters would be hard pressed to find a safe path through the onrushing cloud of relativistic grape shot. Following behind, the capture net's engaged on-board gravity pulse drives. The first net deploying in a glittering vortex before one of the anti-shipping missiles and it's corvette 'escort'. The round abruptly killing it's velocity while bursting out into a spiraled carbon-filament web. Another net deployed a split second later, flashes of light highlighting it's presence as an enemy kinetic swarm ripped clean through. The rest carried on along their path to intercept the enemy cruisers.

The rounds entering the cloud of fog leaving streaks of light behind them. Some of which curved away and eventually back out of the cloud. across the task force, Sliver point defense systems lit up the cloud with sweeping streams of glowing tungsten flechette. The two frigates that were the focus of the fire simultaneously erupted in blue-white light. The self-correcting Sarian kinetics were unexpected, but not unheard of. The vessels adjusted their formation, making some distance between them to allow for sudden sidesteps, dips, and rises. The vessels deftly shifting position while their main drive blocks remained dark.

Majestic Raving.

“Two subs em-kay, crew pods intact but unresponsive, adjusting defensive stance accordingly.” The gentle voice said with a flat tone. Li'rea snarled. “Prep Eos wings for anti-shipping, designate Flight Spear. Progress away and under.”

She traced a line from their formation away from the system's sun and around, under the jovian. The voice of her diplomatic officer came through her ear-piece. The male voice tense with concern. “Crew casualties are moderate, mostly just injuries from the jolt. Messenger took a hit to the bow array, Javelin took one straight through the port weapons bay into the main thruster. Both are evacuating to Old Shaky”

Li'rea flicked an ear in response, attention focused on the tactical display as muted flashes pulsed around the walls. All the while the singing continued to fill the radio waves with the choir of fervor laden voices.

Alpha-99-Aurek28 - Designated Mining Zone - System | Beta Quadrant

The Rockchester Grinder was one of dozens of vessels known as 'Leviathans' or 'World Devastators'. To believe that it could actually be a threat would be to take things to a comical length. A Leviathan could only be dangerous if left alone. The fact that it could harvest the raw materials from anything larger than the size of a TIE Fighter was what made it so valuable. By using massive, specially designed tractor beams the Rockchester Grinder could literally tear asteroids, moons, or even pieces of planets apart -- like a child tearing up pieces of wet bread. At the moment, the Rockchester Grinder was working its docking bay delivery systems to their maximum. A shoal of vessels, large transports, huddled around the massive ship like tropical fish surrounding a whale shark. Five at a time, Imperial cargo ships would dock and spend an estimated four hours having half a million tons of refined materials placed into their holds. Sometimes it was refined and stored hypermatter, blocks of processed steel or transparisteel, or duraplast. Other ships took on box after box of spare parts, necessary pieces to feed the Imperial war machine: TIE fighter solar panels, laser cannon barrels, engine mounts, computer consoles, and even full-production droids.

Standing on the bridge of the Rockchester Grinder and sipping a fifth cup of caffeinated stim-milk, Captain Rogers tapped through the continually updated transfer-processing-reports. Though they were delivering directly to the supply ships of the Imperial Navy, and enjoyed an Imperial Fleet escort, the Rockchester Grinder was not itself owned or operated by the Imperial Navy. The aptly and boringly named Imperial Mining Combine Inc. owned all that Rockchester Grinder was and could produce; which it then sold at a contract price to the Imperial military. Of course there were other Leviathans that produced and mined for civilian purposes only, but the greatest contracts and wealth came from Imperial military contracts -- not to mention the commission rates that crew earned for full deliveries.

"Norman, did we get an update on when the last rotation will be finished?" asked Rogers, not deigning to glance up from his file searching. "I'm not seeing it in the progress reports here."

The second of five crew members required for the bridge turned his head. "Uh, did you check file Besh-92?

"Did I check the -- are you an ingrate, Norman? I'm looking at it right now. Status on the completion of the last rotation is missing."

"I guess the dock chief forgot to annotate it?" guessed Norman, trying to shift blame away from himself in case it was in fact his fault.

Rogers seemed to consider this and took another draw on his stim-milk. "Suppose that could be the reason," he replied at length. "Anyway, get on the horn and tell Lieutenant-Commander Kantrel that we'll be done shortly. He and his band of do-gooders can go ahead and jump to the next system. We'll follow along shortly."

"Aye, Cap'. I'll get on that."

TIE Escort Force Kantrel

"Copy that, Rockchester Grinder, we'll be underway." Lieutenant-Commander Kantrel turned off the com link to the mining leviathan and tiredly sighed once again. He'd been in the cockpit of his TIE Defender for the past six hours, as had the rest of his squadron. He flipped over to his squad-channel.

"Listen up Skull Squadron, we've got new marching orders. All fighters report back to the Nuada," he ordered. A few sounds of cheering came through the channel, alongside some moans and groans. "Come on, try to act like this isn't the most exciting thing you pukes have done since graduating flight school," Kantrel half-joked, getting a few laughs and chuckles through the line.

The TIE Defender squadron had been spread out in wingman groups, patrolling around the system in oscillating patterns. They easily had up to three days of operational time, but Kantrel had learned to keep his men down to 8-hour shifts. Besides, the Nebulon-B Escort Frigate, the Nuada was also in the sysem helping to patrol, and there were always the other TIE squadron onboard to reinforce where necessary in the event of pirates or anything else.

"Nuada Actual, this is Skull Actual, requesting docking orders for return of squadron."

"Confirmed, Skull Actual. Captain Degrasse wishes to see you and your XO upon returning, Lieutenant-Commander Kantrel."

"Looking forward to it, Nuada Actual. Out."

When Skull Squadron was once again docked with the Nuada, the escort frigate began to push away from the mining leviathan and head towards deep space. On board, in the ready room, Captain Degrasse was speaking to Kantrel and his adjutant, Jyrel. "I don't understand it gentlemen -- why us!? Why in the name of all that's holy did we get this mission?"

"To be fair, sir, we'd been rotated out of active anti-pirate raid duty," replied Lieutenant Jyrel. "We needed a rest and refit."

"Besides, this gig will only last another two months, sir," added Kantrel, backing his XO up.

The portly escort frigate captain fumed a little more before calming down and nodding. "I know...it still rankles though."

"Where are we going next?" asked Kantrel.

"Some unnamed system. Last patrol log -- from four years ago mind -- has it being a good place to mine for stable gases and some other rare ores. Likely the reason why those IMC corp pukes want to go there next."

Beta 879865R | Outer System | Beta Quadrant

The Nuada came out of hyperspace on the edge of the system, following standard Imperial Fleet protocol: always dip into the pool without causing too many ripples, as they colloquially said. The Nuada had an advanced sensor suite, as suited to a ship designed for convoy patrol and anti-pirate raids. So when Captain Degrasse flipped on the active sensors before deigning to use passive sensors, the entire bridge crew of the Nuada were in for a rude awakening. Alarms sounded off all across the board, causing both TIE Defender squadrons, both Skull and Fury, to go instantly to battle stations. Kantrel, senior flight officer that he was, went to the bridge immediately.

"The hell happened?" asked Kantrel, stepping onto the bridge.

The deck officer on duty turned around, tinges of panic starting to form in his eyes. "Sir! We've got a battle going on by the looks of it!"

The ComScan hologram was going haywire.

"The best I can describe it is that there are a large number of -- well, ramshackle -- ships attacking and engaging another unknown, smaller group of ships. There seems to be -- holy Gaia, six ships just appeared from FTL! Wait...there's more behind the newcomers. It looks like a second wave sir."

Captain Degrasse stormed onto the bridge. "Status report!"

"Sir," the deck officer turned from Kantrel to his captain, "We've encountered a full on ship engagement. Aggressor ships appear, at least in their smaller form, to be ramshackle and ComScan is reporting all sorts of radiation and thermal readings on them. If they have any crew, they're likely not long for living."

Degrasse sat in his captain's chair and peered into the mass of information piling down the strategic plot that the ComScan hologram console was producing. "Range?"

"They're deeper in the system than we are -- but if they've got micro-jump capability, then they could reach us in moments," said Kantrel, looking up from the side console.

"But do they know that we're here? I mean, we didn't use..." Degrasse turned to look at the deck officer. "We used our active sensors, didn't we?"

The deck officer visibly swallowed and nodded in a jerking motion. "Yes, sir. You had ordered us to ignore Protocol 11-B: When entering an unknown system for the purposes of--."

"I KNOW THE DAMNED PROTOCOLS, ENSIGN!" roared Degrasse. Kantrel could see that the captain was obviously more angry with himself than we was with the ensign. The man was only following orders, after all.

"Bring us about and plot a hyperspace jump out of here," ordered Degrasse.

"It'll take a few moments sir, the Imperial Survey Corp hasn't been to this sector of the region in numbers great enough for us to do a quick calculation," the Helm officer replied.

"Just do what you can," ordered Kantrel, turning to leave the bridge. "I'll make sure the squadrons are ready for launch. We'll need them if they jump on us before we can get out of here."

Sarian First Wave

57mm beheader munitions ejected from the fur ball in bursts and graceful arcs, bellying the violence at their heart. Like columns of the dead clouds of frozen blood, ships fluids and congealed less pleasant masses drifted amongst the building haik plate strewn wreckage. Here and there a beheader hull floated merely holed or burned out and disturbingly intact in form. Occasionally the wreckage was illuminated by weapons fire as the reviled or remaining outcaste met there ends, the entire patch of flotsam still on target to pass into the main body of the enemy, some having the honour of in there last moments recalling just who they were, there named screaming occasionally rising above the roar of the outcaste.

The outcaste themselves were far from unscathed, whole squadrons of the most aggressive lay dead, some of those however still danced, guns flashing as they pushed their reconditioned ships to the limit. Some of those however had begun to make the jump to something more, acting not just in the position of squadron but in its actuality, co-operation etched into their genetics by Xant scientist kings a millennium dead now overriding raw Sarian aggression. Turrets swinging in arcs. Herding. Killing by pack. It would not be enough to save them in full or even in true detail but it would be an unfortunate development for those that they targeted. But then they were outcaste. It was there place to die so the clan could live.

In this case they were only to last long enough so that at least some of the wreckers D-anchors could detonate in range. Aboard those the crew were now long roasted by the horrific reality compression waves rippling from the rotten star drive cores that made up there prows. The turrets dotted along there flanks now spasmodically firing as the remains of systems rippled online for moments before failing. Horrific flashes of other ripping into space as failing xant tech and reality met in a vile marriage designed to slag star drive components.

Bladed Eye

Two point five light minutes from the Nuada

Fri S Sekth cursed his luck silently as warnings spread through the bladed eyes modified Beheader, the stealth systems steadily showing the estimated progress of sensor burn through compared to the drive charge, a depressingly negative number for their chances of jumping before detection or worse intercept. From the neatly squadron small craft around the oddly prow heavy vessel with high energy positively screaming out of his read outs to his prow it all screamed military.

“Para the warbook? Anything?”

“No shiplord, hull markings are unknown, and our optics at this range are ..”

Fri grunted and waved a hand. His Beheaders limitations were as known to him as his own frames. Limited without deploying the dust fountain which would light them up like a Christmas tree.

“The record?”

“Parity is good ship lord, but we will have to burn half the compression charge to send it. Normal space transmission omega report is good.”

“Bah, it’s not as if we’re going to be able to run in time from those damn fighters. Divert all power not on charge to forward stealth only and flush the rack aft. It should buy a minute or two before there baseline grows. I don’t give a damn if they see us in system . The prince’s arrival should gain all of their attention shortly.”

Behind the near turret less angular plate covered craft a series of tubes gently ejected, the plumes of simple gas showing their progress.

Murderchild

Whitened knuckles grasped the command chair as murder child rocked her reality compression field barely keeping up with the roar of the jink thrusters, the hole in space where Flenser had been Sai cursed quite audibly before slamming his hand down on the ship to ship.

“Ripper take Flensers place now!”

He released the contact then stared around the bridge before bellowing.

“REPORT!”

His third wife looked up from a console to his rear, eyes hard as they danced over read outs that illuminated her shipwardens robes, her voice rough.

“Drive plate malfunction due to stress as the shields went to combat maximum, Flensers shipwardens should have been spaced before they allowed a failure like that”

“Grinder take that old fool, I knew he was getting sloppy!., at least it will help draw their eyes to us ..but maybe just a little more is needed. Cant have them thinking were easy eh ?”

The sounds that answered this from around the bridge were less than civil.

His hand slammed down again now on the com contact. “Roll squadron, keep vector and present the damn broadsides and let their damn heavies have it. Time on target every six! Burn barrels if you must!”

As beheaders still forward of the mass of the squadron burst Muderchild lurched as vector thrusters roared before her turrets presented themselves en masse the silent cacophony of her gunnery erupting into a myopicly concentrated wall of blue flashes, her main drives silent now apart from the odd discharge as they added to the brilliant white flashes of the jink thrusters trip hammer.

Closer to the enemy now roaring on their second stages the warhead heavy Shadowfalls still on target or not expanding clouds of dense shrapnel now went to full burn, there space black light absorbing paint made useless as starlight rippled into eye watering ring lenses around there drives, the dull gentle leak of their huge masses of transuranics now becoming increasingly evident even as the variable fusion charges began to cycle active.

Sarian Third Wave, Feral class Heavy Cruiser Ferocities Venom

Mara Kal Sekth gently balanced forward, her great ship ladies intricately embroidered metal threaded robes flowing out to cover her still lithe figure. Shoving the final needle into the holster back of her gloved hand, the other gently grasped around her blades hilt her voice disinterested as she gently gutted the scaled thing held on a platter in front of her before spearing a section and shoving it into her mouth. Speaking around the section of organ, eyes missing almost nothing as they danced across displays and reports.

“Mppf. Kas squadron is to stay tight. I want launch no more than ten after we arrive. Mid course targeting, use Sai’s targets if you must and keep the Beheaders wide. I don’t want to be bracketed like that blow hard. “

She swallowed.

“I want us in line, release, full burn, and salvo. “

She then sat fully back in her chair, one hand waving away the platter.

“Jump”

Opposite to the Murderchilds offensive but still in the planetary plain Ferocities venom and her escorts appeared in a neat oblate sphere formation, moments later there missiles released.

The Pai Sarav
Xav sat on his throne, the steps below and the chamber now filled with darting reports and harsh displays at odds with the rooms opulent fittings and relic strewn edges.

“Mak I don’t know whether to be happy or to take your head, they are burning us.”

“Yes my lord prince”

“Time to burn them back. Begin the ascent to firing altitude. Slow. Three hundredth’s thrust.”

Xav then nodded to the gun warden, who gently inserted the princes own ornate blade and rotated it in a column to his left side. As he did a reticule slid out from the side of Xavs throne, complete with a pistol grip. Battle sirens began to blair across the great halls and throughways. Munitions rails swung out and across seemingly open passages, blast doors closed in brutal sequence, entire segments moved and entire segments of ship slid out of connection as the mono hull conducted the noise of systems in an almost never ending groan, audible only as the gas giants atmosphere bled over it even as in the two great hangers launch timing was vied over by rasping conversation and never ending gambling.

Outside slowly but surely the Juggernauts surroundings begin to lighten. The Pai Saravs bulk shouldering them aside even as her escorts cut through them, all lost in the biological scale in endless sea of clouds.

Our ambition got cast aside, thrown away when the batteries died
New Olivia, Beta Sector, fourteen degrees rimward of Beta 879865R

The world had been in its death throws for a millennium, a failed colony and a failed planet forming project by a failed empire. A long cold as the grave generation ship that hung over head as its worlds only ill-fated moon. The ship had been a bust, stripped out by the colonists to nothing but structural ribs and irradiated waste, even the walls of the conduits removed. The colonists themselves were nothing more than dried husks and scraps of bone as the never ending storms tore down what little was left of their towns. Little however did not mean all.

The voice was old.

“Eighty pounds he said!”

Deep beneath the roaring world covering brown clouds of a runaway volcanic driven green house effect that threw up sulfur laden ash, with visibility barely ten meters, lights vainly lighting the rushing eddies of rime and dust and radar doing little more a line of hard suits advanced through what had been a main street, muscle, pitons, ropes, cable and pneumatics struggling. The shattered remnants of vehicles scattered in untidy heaps, storm and earthquake having played there part in reducing the resource efficient objects into scatterings of wind etched carbon fiber blades and heavily rusted ferrous mechanics.

And it was irate.
“an easy days work and a nice stroll he said!”

The wind roar and constant patter of debris even through his helmet was almost deafening, heat warnings flashing but silent as his backpack whined in protest. Hand signs were almost useless but were waved from the narrow wasted black lined suit ahead that was virtually all he could see but the vague stubs of adobe like walls, the flaky plastic like substance at their core bent back in the wind like wax under a lamp.

“FOURTY METRES TO WAYPOINT” flashed up on his hud as one heavily gauntleted hand dug into what had been pavement, another showing rough outlines of what the suits ahead had seen.

This voice was different, strident, confident in the way only a herald could be.

“Shut it Chal, Rak, Im on top of it. Solid evercrete mounting, warhull equivalent alloy, good solid coating on it, still shiny when you rub it. Bring up the drill. The rest of you get the damn bag and panels ready.”

Step by step, hand hold by handhold, from grate to shattered lamp the gunwarden known as Rak Il Vesk pulled himself into the lee of a courtyard wall that had once been the central colonial government archive. The dessicated carbonized remains of ornamental trees in planters still pointing upwards like a set of skeletal hands, the lintel half buried in ash to one side still etched with the local glyphs. The figures one by one joined him, almost impossible to make out who was who in the one size fits all hard suits save for the Heralds, that was thinner, and even in this atmosphere he could make out the glaring decorative tracing.

Hull metal panels painstakingly lugged by the other figures were erected by piton and held in position before a great off white bag was clamped to them, Rak stepping into it and inflated over the mass of the buried vault.

Near silence in comparison to the outside until the wine of his drill cut arced into action.

“Time Rak?”

“Fourteen minutes my lord herald.”

“Well we will just have to wait and see just what the damn local pirate lords buried here before losing their heads to prince Vesk eh?”

Overhead the final search squadrons of Beheader's screamed, already spiraling upward to something huge that dwarfed the skeletal generation ship.

Simulspace
CIC
HMSS Intangible
B-space Transit

Commodore Andrew Oupis looked over the holo of the upcoming system hanging in front of his face. With a flick of his fingers, he'd scaled it out so that the hyper limit was visible on the screen as a slightly irregular eggshell around the system proper. His skeletally tight face tightened even further as he pulled his cheeks in, a frown of concentration deepening the wrinkles on his forehead into dark crevasses. Spinning it with a finger, he looked over at the other person in the simulspace.

Captain Memnon was short. That was the first thing which Oupis realised when he looked at her, every time he looked at her. He was not a tall man himself, yet he towered over her like a titan. And she always looked up at him in the same way, hazel eyes bright and alive and full of energy. Its how Oupis could tell that she was new. She found everything, even jobs like this one, interesting. It annoyed something deep down inside of Oupis, something which insisted that everybody should have figured out by their sixth birthday that the world was out to get them.

And this mission...he did not even want to think about this mission. Someone somewhere in the chain of command had decided that it would be an excellent idea for them to commit ships to clearing out this God-forsaken sector of space. Which was a brilliant idea. Oupis only disagreed with it when he was the one who had to do it. It was boredom of the worst kind: boredom where you couldn't stop being alert, in case a missile started screaming out of nowhere while you were on the lax. And sure, someone else in the system would pick up the slack for you, but if they didn't? You're dead.

His eyes returning to the holo in front of him, Oupis almost winced at its sparsity. There were three objects on there other than the primary: all of them were outer-system gas giants. Just the data which could be gathered from the system's hyper limit. He'd given up on sending one of their Frigates ahead weeks ago now: it took too long and he wanted to get everything done and get the Hell out of this backwater. Besides, he was convinced that someone in the Admiralty had gotten their coordinates mixed up: the only thing they'd seen which posed a threat to them was a micrometeor.

"Captain." He said simply, watching her stiffen to attention, "We know less than I'd like about the system: as soon as we translate back into r-space I want you to get Ilus and Myles on the line. We're splitting the Element into three groups so that we can poke around here and then head to the next backwater system. Understand?"

"Yes...sir." Memnon said slowly, brow furrowing a little, "But isn't that against protocol?"

"Yes." Oupius said with a small roll of his eyes, "That doesn't matter: I know the rulebook well enough that I also know when to deviate from it."

"Yes, sir." Memnon said, as if that explained everything.

"Good." Oupis nodded, partially to himself, "Dismissed."

Memnon faded from the simulspace and Oupis looked at the holo again. God, but he hated this job. Even being deployed into the plane was better. At least you had Battleships to back you up if the enemy had any Capital. Here he had - what? Three Cruisers and six Frigates and that was it. If the shit hit the fan, what could he do with that? Nothing. He could just sit back and watch the pretty lights as his ships detonated one-by-one and there would be nothing he could-

His mental ranting was cut off as the ships transitioned out of b-space as they hit the hyper limit, slowing from impossible speeds relative to the primary down to nothing. Instantly, QE lines opened up once again and the ships orientated themselves relative to the rest of the formation. They must have passed near to a deep-space asteroid or something, because their formation was a rough ovoid tapering off towards one side. Briskly, the ships re-formed themselves into a single formation before Oupis brought up the holo.

This time, it was filled with other objects, almost a dozen of them, all whirling furiously around the system's primary. Glancing over them, Oupis groaned internally. It would take a fair amount of time to go between them all, even with the ships splitting up. He checked the estimate which the ship had thrown up for him: twenty-one and a half hours total. Briefly, he toyed with the idea of splitting the ships down to pairs and singles before dismissing it. At least this way it didn't look like he was being totally negligent.

Memnon, Ilus and Myles appeared in the simulspace and Oupis briefly looked up from the holo, a number of lines already weaving between and around the planets like creepers. Over a dozen of them appeared, creating a thin tangle of light before Oupis waved his finger through the projection and removed all but six of them. Once he'd done that, his eyes finally came up to the officers before him and he began, speaking briefly and curtly.

"Ilus, I want you to take path Alpha, with your Recon Drones heading out along path Bravo." He began simply, indicating each track as he said its name, "Myles, take path Charlie with your Drones moving across path Delta. Memnon, we'll take path Echo and have our Drones going along Foxtrot. If you see anything, swing by and have a look at it before moving on and we'll meet each other at rally point Alpha in about twenty-two hours. That is all. Dismissed."

The Captains looked like they had some questions, but Oupis didn't have time for that. They would figure out what to do perfectly well during their patrol and what they would have to do was nothing. With a mental command, he detached them from the simulspace and their avatars popped out of existence. Glancing up at the holo, he brought up a timer, counting down the seconds until their Recon Drones would arrive in orbit around their first planet to check: four point three hours from launch.

A rumbling in his simulspace indicated that the six-shots were firing their payloads and, pinching forefinger and thumb together before sweeping them apart, he opened up another holo, this one a zoomed-in version of the main one which showed the nine ships of his Task Element spitting a swarm of Recon Drones out into the system. The small spaecraft powered up their gravitics and split into three streamers of two hundred and seventy each, optics coordinating from each swarm to act as a single telescope with excellent resolution for its size. But they would still need to get closer to their targets to actually get a decent picture - not least because his swarm had to travel twenty-seven light-minutes to get into orbit of their target.

One day, you'd think the asshats in R&D would figure out how to let us FTL within the Hyper Limit. He thought bitterly, But no. They never can, the useless wastes of oxygen. Well, It's time to get comfy. After all, it's only a...four point one eight hours until we start getting decent pictures. Not that long, now is it? Bloody useless R&D-ers.

Hammer of the gods, will drive our ships to new land. To fight the hordes, and sing and cry.

New Olivia Surface.

After the drill had dealt with the toys the supposed local pirate lords had left the gunwarden audibly sighed. He did so detest a lack of skill. Moments later the vault door irises open, his suit lights making out the small dusty chamber beneath, canisters and boxes strewn haphazardly about, the tectonic activity having long shifted them from careful arrangement.

“My lord Herald what shall I pack?”

“All of it”

He stared for a moment, the wind roar outside the bag and panels audible before he trudged inward.

A considerable period of back braking labor later the iris was closed again, the bag exited and wrapped for cary, the panels left to rot and the party now making considerably faster guide rope and cable assisted passage back to the assault shuttle that they had half wedged into into the remains of a grain silo.

Orbit, Clan Vesk Flag, Juggernaut 023 , The Orn Vesk

To Herald Maj Paor what the the Orn Vesk screamed of most of all was age. Its hull was strewn with attachments, gantries, projections leading nowhere and the marked off sections where once a barbette or gunnery had been. Even the HAIK was time worn with micro meteorites in places. It had been old a millennium ago when the Xants and the United Star Kingdom had their final dance. Many of Its corridors were of almost alien geometry, far more Xant than Sarian, this at least in the most populace and well-traveled areas was hidden under a morass of murals and resin work that forced the corridors to be tight and shadow filled. Mutiny, though the Xants would have referred to them as animal control baffle barriers still marked its internals between operations and the great mass of the crew or the great bays.

It had been old upon the fall of the Sirus Republic, republican naval banners dressing its walls and its many refits had left it a mixture of HAIK qualities and ages that baffled even the majority of its own shipwardens who’s oldest records were in pure Xant cuneiform parity three dimensional holo tiles rather than neat easily read battle ready Sarian glyphs. It had also changed hands more than once, half a dozen royal clans having taken it from time to time, there sigils and markings still in the rim corridors and hastily ablated from the Juggernauts endless flanks to be replaced by Vesks. Vesk however had held onto It since the sack of the Sirius republic. Vesk strength had brought it opulence and power and Vesk pride had thrown them into the front of this migration.

The chamber vast as it was packed, the lesser and greater ship lords moving in neat chevrons to their positions and cushion covered chairs. The walls, knee height dividers and bannisters were dark embossed resin work and metal filigreed that made up the main floor while the chambers sharp edges showing enclosed reliquaries every few meters. Above it all on a pneumatic arm dressed in banners a single platform sat, neatly presented bladed and alien mercenaries, to a person female were in both position and draped across it and the platforms main occupant, who sat in robes that cost more than a cruiser in what had once been an admirals shock chair. Though the chair still retaining much of those functions was now far more throne like, heavy alabaster slabs and towering high back seeing to that.

Pince Il Vesk. Vesk the Vile to his Sarian royal peers given his penchant for alien females and fathering a dozen illegitimate royal caste children. An act probably damming the clan to a brutal multi-faceted civil war after his demise. He, when it was as politely as possible brought up , seemed to almost relish the idea. Coaching it in terms of the quasi-religious purges of outcaste taken to their most obvious end rather than as asking for his clan to be brought to there knees . Maj internally cursed the months it had taken him to track the Vesk down after there last Herald had finally died of old age or incompetence. Not having had a constant heraldic voice at his ear had left Il Vesk to his own devices and vices for far too long.

Vesk the victor in his own mind and to his own clan mates. Though that may been more to his father’s extraordinary wealth (that Vesk had spent like water in a rainstorm) than any actual acumen stood up and gestured wildly as was his want at the great black sack now upon the center of the chambers tiles.

“Maj has brought us a gift! Lets see just what Pasook and his little friends left for us!”

With that mention he pointed at one of the reliquaries, its doors open, its racks and banners visible. Newer than the rest. The definitively non Sarian faces of half a dozen supposed pirate lords sitting preserved in thick plastic blocks within, a smattering of there ships already converted for Sarian use in the flotilla outside, newly minted ship lords in the pews below, there fresh change to noble caste still showing in there physiology and the odd snap of near outcaste rage in there voices.

Maj stared now and gestured with Rak to open the bag at the same time, the great tent sized object neatly rolling away. Overhead he could hear a whine and a groan and upon glancing upward he could seek Vesks platform lowering down. The prince wanted a better look did he.

“Rak. The cases .. open them.”

The aged gunwarden, his dress shirt covered in ribbons and garish color moved forward, pry bars and locks on hand. Clouds of dust rising as he did. A cough over head brought a well angle hidden smile to Majs face.

The cries of greed and avarice as the contents showed were almost deafening but this peace of Vesk pageantry and theatre internally sickened Maj's reserved Paor heritage which even with a heralds brutal training still was at his heart. but ..there compensations. After all he had already taken the greatest prizes. The information on a polity that had been raided for decades by the scum who's heads now lay in plastic. After all who was to say Vesk were to be the ones to replace the local riff raff. He certainly wouldn’t be recommending it, and what they did not know they would fly past would not hurt them… nore benefit Vesk to fill there already engorged treasury even after the princes ill advised spending sprees.

“Maj! Maj tell me of what this cups providence is Herald!”

Vesk’s voice cut above the din. Maj sighed. A heralds job was never done with that one’s ignorance.

Deep below the great conference chamber, once and still in some ways the task force planning room in the well trod operations centers dim light on a console that had not been bothered with by ship warden eyes for a generation a steady blue light blinked and a display began gently pulsing.

Chala was a very junior shipwarden, her robe still new and burgundy rather than bright red, hair held neatly back in a wire net, machinists gauntlets and padding showing her first earned specialty while the power broom she rubbed over the ancient shock absorbing material in the floors showed just how little ShipWarden Morissa trusted her in the Ops center outside of her teaching times, the buzz of activity and light at its heart, the well-dressed ship lords and high ranking ship and gun wardens ignoring the whine of her broom and her nearly entirely. The mantra of touch nothing hammering in her head Chala gently turned the corner around another bank of consoles, usually dead dark. The light though caught her attention. She did not know how long it had been flashing but It was definetly new and that shade was only ever for alert..

She drew close to the console, her power brooms whine switched off, its ancient glyphs cleary showing now, its larger holo displays long powered down or canabalized and only its read outs and status lights usually gleaming in reflected ship light. Now however it filled with movement and flashing. “Porstik H-wave Detector” she spelled out, lips moving as she moved closer.

Behind her the click clack of boots could be heard as she leaned in to see more detail on the steadily flashing console. Morissa’s voice was stern, her robe far brighter and her hair free flowing, her teenage frame a far cry more developed than Chalas waifish form, the recoil tendons in her arms beginning to be visible.

“Child you had better not be slacking on the ops deck, the disgrace of it would be..what have you done!”

A hand was already raised to strike.

“Nothing senior! Nothing I promise, it was blinking when I came around the corner!”

A gruff voice broke in and Chala almost fainted. That voice was known from its echoing over the ship wide PA, its vacuum burned tones could only belong to one person on the deck. No more garish gunwarden could be found, Mirk prime great cat hide covered shoulders, bald scar spotted skin and eyes that saw straight through most. Not just a gunwarden but The GunWarden, Song Il Vesk, master of the Juggernauts and the clans weapons, his approach had been silent.

For all that his voice was gentle as he addressed them.

“Now what goes on here eh lasses?”

He stared at the now frozen scene.

“Morrisa you know I don’t like a discipline scene on the bridge, if you must take it to the vestibules but what in the name of the Grinder offense could take you to strike Chala of all the ship bound devotion the child gives to ..”

His eyes dropped to the blinking light and just where he was.

The bellow that followed could have been heard across the roar of cannon.

“STATIONS! Bring us to Stations! Sound the grinder be damned sirens! Bring us to active!”

Captain' Quarters
HMSS Intangible
Uncharted System

Angelie rolled over as the insistent buzzing rang in her head, eyes springing open and searching the apparent darkness of the room around her. A bubble appeared in her vision, informing her that she'd set the alarm three hours ago and that it was time for her to get up and head to the CIC. Rolling out of her bed, she felt her hair curling into a short bob atop her head, pulling it back away from her eyes. Pulling the sheets off of her naked frame, she reached out and tapped the bubble which promptly disappeared along with the buzzing.

Groping at the peg next to her bed, Angelie's fingers curled around her skinsuit and she stood up, pulling the suit on. It settled on her figure like an old lover and zipped itself up, morphing into its full dress format at a thought. Glancing at herself in the mirror, Angelie nodded approvingly and set out into the ship proper, navigating the warren of maze-like corridors with accustomed ease. At several points along her journey, she had to duck under an open panel of wiring or a mass of cabling which had been temporarily re-routed through one of the corridors. Given the reports she received from Thule, she doubted they were really necessary: the ship was running at as-close-to-optimum as they were ever going to get out here. But then, Thule never let 'good enough' get in the way of 'perfect'.

Reaching the CIC, Angelie entered the first open space since she'd left her quarters. The roughly circular room was bordered by twenty-nine interlink pods: thirteen had any Human occupants right now, although that number would increase since they were going to have to go onto half-alert moving through the system proper, whatever the Commodore might say. And speaking of the Commodore, he was still in his tank, twitching slightly. It always fixated Angelie with a morbid fascination to see the lengths of time he would spend in those things: he'd spent ninety-three hours in a tank once before Angelie had pulled Article ninety-five and forced him out of it.

Still, now was Angelie's turn to enter the pod and she held her hand against the flat metal extrusion of the Captains pod, her skinsuit meshing with the nanny-alloy in the plate and confirming her biometrics directly. The front of the pod slid upwards, revealing the glistening, gelatinous interior. A rough cuboid of amniotic fluid filled the interior, wobbling gently as surface tension fought with gravity. Hanging, suspended in the fluid was dozens of wires and tubes, each ending with a different form of semi-surgical appendage.

At a thought, the skinsuit extended over Angelie's head and sealed away her body before she stepped into the amniotic. Sliding her entire body into the pod, Angelie tapped the inside and saw the door slide shut over the gel. A flurry of motion began, half-seen, above her as the wires sprang to life and began to swim through the gel and burrow into her skinsuit, sharp pricks indicating where they went further and burrowed into flesh. The pricks began in her arms and legs, before spreading along to her spinal cord and working their way up to the base of her neck and, finally, along her skull.

And then Angelie felt her perspective lift up. Now she was looking at the top of her own head in the pod as the first nanites entered the bloodstream and the wires attached to her aug hardpoints elevated her thought into the realm of computers. This was her simulspace, and she loved it. She loved the thrill of having a warship respond to her tiniest thoughts and desires, she loved the beauty of the void which she could now see with more than just the tiny sliver of the EM spectrum which nature had assigned her. She loved it more than anything and yet, she still couldn't understand the Commodore. He spent as long as he could in simulspace, but his was just an office. Where was the joy in that? If

Still, much though she could have exulted in the moment forever, she had a job to do. The Recon Drones should have finally gotten close enough to get a good picture of the planet they were headed to and she needed to be here to observe the results. And, should there be something of any import, act as best she could to ensure that her objectives would be complete. With that in mind, she accessed the Drones' footage and brought up the analysis Atkinson had compiled.

Well.

The planet itself didn't seem to be particularly interesting: they'd have to scan it from space to be sure, but it seemed fairly normal. But there was what appeared to be a floating hulk was drifting around the planet - and hulk it most definitely was. Although the Drones were still around thirty minutes away, the ghost ship was in a stable orbit and so their RADAR and LIDAR could probe it. And it measured out at four and a half kilometers in length. It was huge beyond anything Spindle had ever built.

And, for some reason, it's sitting there, cold and dead. A small voice in the back of her mind whispered, That begs the question: what killed it? And where is it now?

Considering the thought for a moment, Angelie stretched her perspective out to include the Intangible and her two Escorts, as well as their Recon Drones and the planet they were interested in. It took her a moment to decide what to do before she decided and a message was transmitted to her two daughter ships, as well as to the other ships in her formation to warn them about the potential for activity. Within moments, the two Escorts had bunched closer to the Intangible, their point defences meshing to cover the approach to the hulk, even if it was still...nine hours forty minutes away.

As she began to prepare a flight-plan to bring all of their ships in-system together, a half-corporeal ghost flitted in front of her perspective. Glancing up, she saw the furious face of Commodore Oupis and realised what must of happened. His face mouthed what she presumed was a request and Angelie fought back the urge to roll her eyes like a teenager. How had he forgotten the simulspace password again? She'd literally written it on the inside of his pod, for crying out loud!

"Swordfish." She said simply, watching as Oupis formed fully in the simulspace, cheeks slightly red.

"Sorry about that...could have sworn it had changed this week." He blustered for a moment, before pulling himself together, "You've seen the data?"

"Yes, sir." Angelie said with a smile, trying her best to not throttle someone. The only other avatar in this simulspace within grabbing distance was Oupis.

"Good." He said with a firm nod, "I want you to take us on a docking course with it."

"Um..sir?" Angelie asked, "Would it not be safer to send one of the Drones in first?"

"Well, yes, but it's dead and won't be coming back any time soon." Oupis replied, as if lecturing a child, "I want us to match orbits with it as soon as possible and get this over and done with."

"Sir, yes sir." Angelie said, "Shall we have the rest of the Element providing overwatch in case it has some residual power?"

"Memnon, that thing is deader than disco." Oupis told her, "It's not going to have any residual power."

"Sir, yes sir." Angelie said, already trying to formulate some plan which could get her out of this mess as she closed with the floating hulk. She couldn't find anything other than: 'Hope it's actually dead.'

Orn Vesk

Majs mind wandered as he moved through the ship. The stride. The first thing was to get the stride right, it had to say I have authority and don’t you even think about stopping me. The second was the clothing, for into every fairy tale told to a noble child or even be damned cleric indoctrination of outcaste was the clothing and the tales of never stop a Herald. He still had to leave his retinue behind, the ship lords and there’s positively clogging the exits for clawing moments as they rushed to the great bays or their own shuttles while he and the princes made for the operations centre.

The prince was just ahead, his retinue mostly of female and alien mercenary broken tightly packed, the Orn Vesks corridors forcing them closer than was seemly in places as they passed the final sets of mutiny and war doors of the ships citadel. The now fully illuminated operations center was no longer near silent, buzzing now as senior ship wardens and gun wardens filled its depths and great central displays flickered to life showing that the ships active scanning flank arrays were powering up. In the background the low thunk of beheader squadron launches could be constantly heard.

The prince made for the heart of it, by now Maj was only steps behind, his voice high pitched and grating, almost outcaste in its tone. For a prince to show such to the masses. Maj winced internally.

“Report!”

Song Il Vesk, surrounded by reports and read outs spoke, for once able to dispense with the dubious forms of address for his master spoke in rapid battle cant, his burred vacuum burned accent showing through .

“We have multiple jumps into the out system using a little used drive variant. They were not detected until Chala here spotted it on a long disused console in a dark sector. The bulk of the hulk was blocking our passive. Fleet is now going to full active. Line of sight relay from Havoc's Days squadrons in ten, multiple active capital grade reactor sources now closing. No warbook recognition.”

Prince Vesks eyes danced over the shipwarden girl in the corner for just a moment before moving on, surrounded now by gesturing great ship lords and ladies as they moved around tactics displays.

“BAH! If someone was trying they could not have approached more stealthily. I will have words with your junior watch standers and our much vaunted navigator after this Gunwarden. Now, bring us out of the lee of that floating mausoleum!!”

His reply was florid, and definitively not battle cant. No formation or vector prefrace, no neat tight sounds that cant allowed. Majs eyes catching the well hidden tell tales of disapproval from Song, not just for the lack of recognition of the child but braking cant. Back in the Paor or the Heralds it would have called for almost instant reprisal prince or no. Then he so very much was not in either and what had been unsaid, was that it was Vesks own orders that had confined the copious outcaste swarms of beheaders to ships hulls. It was Vesk who had had them sitting cold in tight formation, hugging the wreck like some misbegotten parasites rather than in a standard formation.

As the prince began to rant at his ship lords Maj moved over to the girl, one hand already in a pocket and then preferring a small metal token. Her glance down to it and closed fist over it showing she understood.

“Speak to me later child. You will be rewarded further. “

There was a dull rumble now as the Juggernauts great reactors finally came up to ratio and she began to change vector.
Ahead already half a dozen of the brutal forms of Alchemist and Thresher frigates lurched to open space, the Fang class cruisers backing them moments behind the beheader squadrons now flowing from all of them. The neat bladed and uncouth swarms of outcaste formed up and spread even as the clan fleet exited the shadows, the converted and captured freighters, pirate craft and patrol ships from half a dozen systems surrounding the Juggernaut like a host of the dead, there hulls heavily marred by clinker applied HAIK plate and there engines all gutted to make way for reality compression drives, now dotted with clan multi guns and reclamation systems.

Beta Sector
Orleania System
Severed Empire Remnant Sector Capital
Grand Palace Plateau

The introducing rooms ceiling was one massive single cast and grown crystal, perfect figures of mating deities of the locals at odds with the harsh angular figures of the Severed gods in perfect if slightly translucent form set in clearly superior positions, the floors polished fused melt glass from a colony lander site that was oxidised rust and ceramic dust a thousand years or more ago.

The punch could have been better. If it had not been outside their normal body language he would have grimaced. Rano slid his empty glass back on the tray, body motions mimicking the slightly overbuilt severed ship's commanding officer he outwardly appeared to be, the bio film lenses integrating into the flesh suit gently luminescing the correct colours of appreciation to the local server, the photoreceptor translator mounted on the control band around its neck speaking in almost sub vocal tones into its ears in appreciation of a well presented glass. It nodded in a hard mimicry of the old Severed bow to a worthy superior, the difference between that and to someone merely in command almost imperceptible save for one from the fleet family lines who still kept up the traditions.

The world count's voice on the other hand was both audible and definitively of the severed aristocracies local remnant upper class rather than the perfect photo manipulation of one born on the charred cinder that had once been the severed capital world, Sacristy or on the remaining fleets.

“Come captain speaking to the natives? Really I know our local fleet relies upon auxiliaries these days but I would expect more ..separation from someone of your pedigree”

Rano now did wince in the severed fashion, visible to several of the local militia boat captains who were trying to hide there faces at being called fleet. He had been hovering near them, there talk about who’s tiny patrol boat required more ingenuity to keep going genuinely entertaining to him… and the fact that there rankers were nearly entirely native an unsaid truth before pivoting and putting on a blank face of acceptance.

“I have always found preserving form and tradition to be vital to maintaining command in fleet and even in such salubrious settings most gracious host as this it is ..troublesome to brake from such formality fleet inculcates, service from birth and such.”

The world count, Mirabin by name grinned at that and the break between fleet formality and noble informal "wit” in severed parlance.

“Service from birth indeed captain Ansaid! The fortunes smile on us to find a cruiser captain of your caliber available for the retaking of south continent.”

Rano did not quite grimace at the count now eyes clearly rolling back to indicate the server still in obvious ear shot.

“Oh never mind them, been in the family for generations, come we shall leave my ladies to entertain the younger men while we get some business done before entertainment”

Rano sub vocced, the flesh suits hud gently bouncing the pulse message for transmission when he was clear.. “Almost as bad as a Sathari.” following the counts flamboyant flowing robes that would have seen him air locked on a fleet remnant station, his fleet greys at odds with the local nobles.

“Come come all now we celebrate the good captain Ansaid’s arrival and our fortune, soon gentlebeings south continent will once more be welcomed into our good grace and governance and ..”

As the count continued to ..preach at the crowd as he moved in something approximating “noble address” from the fleet guide Rano moved in strict fleet “formal movement” as they entered the planning room to discuss what the count referred to as “high strategy”

Two months later…

Severed Empire, Sacristy Fleet Cruiser Morgala had been a good ship when she had been built and was still solid, the severed had not carved an empire for a millennium without being competent shipwrights..and innovative ones at that, the fractal ablative armour that gave the ship it's comical but lethal flower petal like conical form.

Rano stood on the bridge, the count in an obviously ancient vac suit from the palace stocks overlaid with the ranting emotional colours common to all severed systems, his government rank overrides apparently playing the Morgalas systems like a fiddle.

“MY ENTIRE SQUADRON BURNED BY FUSION FLAME? AND WHO GAVE THE DAMN NATIVES STRIKE LANCES ! YOU ANSAID! YOU AND YOUR DAMN MARINES ! GIVE ME A REASON ANSAID! “

The Severed world counts guardsmen clearly thought he would not as they were already beginning to slide out their knives for the traditional execution of a world counts displeasure…the senior one neatly already holding his wrist in “accept your fate” alternating to “swiftly” almost as well as a member of fleet.

Rano shrugged in fleet fashion, the Ansaid flesh suit making it almost perfect in motion.

“I have my reasons. You will and would not accept them with good grace”

The world count spluttered in shock his motions showing outrage.

“DEFECTIVE! IS THAT IT ANSAID IS THAT WHY YOUR HERE IN THE BOONIES! DONT GIVE ME THAT LOOK! . ..WHY AM I EVEN BOTHERING.... DO IT!”

Mirabin turned away as the guardsmen advanced, unwilling to watch something he had last heard of his grand sire doing. It saved his eyesight. When the flash occurred it still made his optics drip and etched outlines of the bridge consoles on his mind, and as he turned again in shock, to the count it was if Captain Ansaid was mid melting.

In the captain's firm visaged place stood something else, lithe and green skinned surrounded by motes of Ansaid shaded goop, proper puce skin split open like a ripe melon and the entire thing wreathed in steaming gobbets of something other than flesh. The form was spinning, moving, blade and pistol flashing in a non standard blur, he almost thought he saw outgassing from the arms the motions were so fast..

So fast as the guardsmen fell , a well placed elbow, the crunching horror of a smashed ankle there and the icy white power blade humming as it sliced to disable leaving in a moment four of the most lethal killers in the system groaning heaps with lines of acrid smoke rising from the visible blade strikes. As the figure finished moving in an almost dance like fashion the count felt the still warm circle of the goop dripping figures pistol firmly under his chin.

The non severed all too alien eyes bored into him, too deep, too focus capable, the green skin pallid glistening in a gelatinous mass that was steaming off it onto the deck, the thin weave of metal like fabric bound to its torso, emotion seeming to ripple across its face in unrecognizable patterns.

It spat once, a foul gelatinous horror with certain rings in it splashing across his shoes, the accent afterwards still understandable but so alien.

“Now count..let's have a little talk without all that nasty talk about flaying”

It then turned and addressed the crew.

Then the language, alien, harsh short words in a long string , the bridge crew answering in perfect response and odd bows that fit no approved motion he knew.

“Are ..the crew of the Morgala.. I .!”

There was a harsh noise.. Laughter the count realised with a growing horror as he saw the cruisers primary weapon stations slowly light up.

“Nice to know you actually care. Oh don't worry, old Ansaid is quite safe being fictional, and these are the quite real crew.. And a good and loyal one to their captain” the alien pointed towards itself.

“They are here to witness as part of contract law as well. . ..but spacers have to eat after all..loyalty to a dead world is only worth so much and your fleet discipline was so very ..precise. And your fleet admirals do have such odd little ..appetites. Debts were inevitable. After all they're the ones who offered you to us as such a fine prospect for ..repayment.”

The pistol waving alien figure forced him into the command chair, so strong for something that barely came up to his shoulder. The familiarity almost like the fast flyer of his youth, its controls visibly shut down and its displays showing strange symbols even as the Mangalas main guns converted the planetary defence orbital to glowing shrapnel with the neat hammering of severed fleet c fire.

“You ..you MURDERING PIRATE!”

“Tut tut ..we are so much more and I thought we should watch from here. It's not often you understand one such as you gets to see this.”

The stars seemed to swell for a moment on the forward view before being filled with things. Ships. Miss matched terrible alien ships, there unsevered lines cutting at his sense of what should be as they hung above what he still thought of as his world.

The figures tone now was almost formal rather than mocking or manipulative.

“Welcome to be broken Mirabin. My name is Rano Saikarn, grand order of heralds of the Sarian raider clans representing clan Havk. Your world for a time will be ours..given by contract by those would guard you in return for payment of debt owed...Like all worlds taken we will return it to its ..occupants after we have taken what we wish”.

In a far more normal voice Rano continued, the pistol digging deeper in.

“Now just as you were saying in front of the not to be lamented militia flight captain Tasik last week about those DaGaus in your art collection being priceless...”

Blade

Twenty four years prior to Fall Day
Duke Sargoso Very Large Launch Facility, Ranca Province
Saria. New Rosa Republic.

The weather cowling sat like an offset seasonal decoration overhead, the bulk of the solar generators spread in huge discs on the clean rooms assembly floor. Weather Monitoring satellite twenty was a marvel of Sarian sciences and philosophy, a clean design good for centuries of operation.

The technician was almost alien to the modern sarian, rail thin but lacking in musculature, speed of movement or the too capable eyes, none the less his work was precise, as canisters were measured, measured gain, mixed and set into the device. Neatly inlaid the last selection of metal dust into the sintering system, he stood and stretched for a moment before sealing it with a click, double checked the extractor and then waiting, the dulled silica optical ports showing the barest hints of the actinic light within as the spar was manufactured.

Juggernought Pas Verak
Present day

Juggernaut Pas Verak was dilapidated, though of a late series and clearly of star kingdom manufacture rather than Xant her void works showing lack of care, sensor domes smashed and left to spall away to uselessness in the endless micro meteorite rain, whole gunnery bays left open to space and stripped. Even her Beheaders showed there age, more repairs than hull plates and almost bereft of markings or bladed banners. But as disposed as it was now it had once been a wonder, a dozen worlds stolen wealth poured into its noble quarters that pride had kept mostly unstripped. A dozen failures of princes before one finally with some competence who was still bound by clan pride and lore of past glory.

In contrast though much smaller the heavy cruiser Twisting Blade was in perfect condition, her hull immaculate, grim bladed squadrons moving in formations about her and her escorts and outcaste stretching back into the star scape.
But offers on this level must still be proven and in modern royal sarian parlance that meant blood lost or shared.

Metal striking metal. The hull grate beneath them reverbing, the harsh growth promoting lighting of the massive cleared green bay warming bared skin in a way that nothing else could.

The swords blade flashed downward in female hands, the ancient glyph covered metal hissing towards a male torso that lithely slipped away before a pair of twin power blades danced inward before being deflected in a shower of sparks and flashing light. Overhead and around them the crowd had grown silent with anticipation. A fight between bladed, or ship lords much less royals was rare. And a challenge like this … clothing and armor creaked as they all pressed to get a better view as the figures broke apart. Two crowds split by lines of armed bladed gaurds mixed from both.

Both figures were dripping with perspiration, both grinning in feral joy at the simplicity of it.

“Good blade Dasarin. I may even let you keep it if you loose.”

“Better than your two short toys Verak.. I hope they are not speaking to about you..”

They lunged towards each other again.

Xant interregnum, Fall Day +155 Years

The winds were cold. But then they were always cold now and there were always fewer people who had escaped north. The smith, for these days he thought of himself as nothing else had struggled to manhandle the warped mass of alloys and metal out of the near traders sled even with help. His hold was small, the stolid lump of piled rock permitted just barely worth calling the name.
The ancient lump showed the clear signs of antiquity, glpyhs nearly lost to time on its remaining perfect innards that had not been shattered showing the precision of the lost years. He sighed as he prepared the weighted sledge to try and brake it apart. All the artifice in the world showing as naught against Xant “requirements” and Sarian need. As he swung the sledge again and again he saw it. The perfect spar, seemingly unmarked by time and with his every strike resistant to his greatest effort. Eyes narrowing the smith stared at the walls rusty collection of blades and considered.

Juggernought Pas Verak

Verak bellowed as the blade neatly sliced through a previously struck and now oversensitive ear lobe, a trail of bodily fluids in the air twinkling in the growth lights.

“You are good Verak, your line was always good …but you just don’t think ahead often enough”

The twin power blades hissed outward missing again before both figures scurried backwards making space and time for the dance could not end this quickly.

Xant purging of X014B Fall Day +590 Years
Twenty third deployment of Sarian Clearance Forces
Porato Council Homeworld

Where the sun had been was a black nothing. Even the air was bleeding away as the world plunged onward into the void, its urban conurbations plucked into orbit beforehand to be examined and looted, leaving nothing but gaping chasms, the ground wracked by earth quakes the air growing colder, and unbreathable for weeks.

In the distance the long lines of council troops stood in environmental hard suits in earthworks made from the fields that had spurred their ancestors to a rather dire fate amongst the stars, while endless mass drivers and energy weapons discharged bringing the remaining atmosphere up by tens of degrees for miles.
They stood not out of patriotism or hope, not over revenge but out of grim resolve and confidence in there species that had spurred them to act where no one sane would and anyone who was would have already decided it was over.

Overhead the Xant spheres stood silent, there geometric weapons ports visible even from the surface, there size belaying the grace of their arcing movement as they had smashed the council fleets to ruin from visual range before simply removing there primary from existence as less a statement to the Porato and more to those who would dare interfere in the purpose that drove them. Now they simply watched there tools at work.

Every now and again a puffing mass of frozen earth would jump into the air, the smart munitions of both sides limited, but one with a seemingly endless mass of reinforcements coming from vast ugly transports, ships lashed together by Xant standards and crewed by there lowest to move on this organic tool of choice.

These tools moved, even if there thin transparent plastic skin suits and even more simple clip fed bayoneted rifles should have been no match for the council troopers they still moved. Some a rare few bore ancient weapons, blades, and high velocity devices at odds with the synthetics most carried into the grinder.
The Xants watched. Intellects that could perceive and predict sub atomic motion engaging in a distraction to them that was an opiate to the masses equal to a crude soap opera, unable to look away as a rubbernecker at a car crash.
Numbers tell and amongst the morass of ravening lunatics hurled onto Poratos steadily freezing surface some were more capable than others. Some were exceptional. Those lines were marked for reproduction. The rest purged from the programs ranks. After all the Xants preferred perfected tools.

She moved. She didn’t have a name, Xants despised such frivolities when one was taken. She always had to remind herself ..she had no name. Just the number vacuformed onto the pathetic synethic barrel of her rifle. The walk to the front had been grinding, resource posts, no more than a half dozen barrels dumped on a angular drop pallet and protected by a single twinkling laser from the council forces over the horizon fire, which at a moment could be swept clear by the Xants overhead but was instead allowed to lash into them leaving whole formations in ruin. Units, thankfully not hers had come to their numbered post to find it already a ruin, no choice but to slash their own suits, the wretched things only unlocking to each squad.

The horizon was unbroken ruin, a crazily canted maglev rammed into a grain silo like a madmans concertina making its only brake in the once perfectly kept farmland. Then it came. The hail. Council trooper munitions plucking them apart limb from limb, explosives and sabots ripping and tearing and blasting coming from the maglevs crazily skewed cabins.

They still advanced. There was no choice. No choice at all and they raged for they unlike the council troops had once been more than living automata and they recalled it all. It after all drew out more extreme actions. And the Xants so enjoyed viewing such.
She ran. Overhead she could see the sparking markers of the support squads mortars flying to dig into the enemy and cast as much smoke as they could, the bulky forms of entire council troopers tossed voidward as the xant provided reality compression warheads did there worst. The Xants ..though the mortar shells were seemingly unstoppable and destating ..the Xants seemed to make sure that there was only so much mass permitted for such even as there moon sized spheres gulped up entire oceans. They seemed to only provide so many even when what remained to them could have produced ten thousand times that in high explosives.
But then there was no choice.

She ran as men and women she had known since birth, had loved and cried with were converted to red mist as tracers deflected from rocks and zipped upwards. Suddenly chaos of dirt and mist as something huge blasted upwards from the frozen soil, all servos, angular armor plates shoulder mounted launchers and weapon.

Within minutes in the newly formed crater the rest of her birth mates lay dead and there suits leaking icy whisps, above her the council troopers huge bulky suited form swinging its ungainly but deadly tri barreled cannon at her to smash bone and crush organs. She jumped over it ..her blade outward as it cut another environmental line where one of her birth mates and pried off an armored plate before being cut down by a slashing counter munition gun. She swung and leaped again, the suits tiny warning systems whining in her ear about remaining scrubber time. The blade though she felt herself failing, the blade was not as another line snapped under its ministrations and through the very fabric of the council troopers suit as she cavorted on it in her murderous dance she could hear its groans.

The trooper would make it another twenty yards before he died as she lay breathing her last from a failing suit. The Xant multi d probe that would retrieve the blade and the organic samples from her frozen corpse for the next batch would be seen by no one on either side. The line would continue.

Retainers and trusted bladed opened up supporting chairs and tended wounds, ancient salves and bindings applied with skill by their contracted non Sarian medics, the ever watching eyes of the clerics watching for impurity of action while the heralds moved through the crowds like sharks chasing rumor and possibilities in the endless gossip and chatter. This after all was a moment of joy and bonding. The good stuff was even cracked open to flow, heady scents of aged real barrels filling the hall.

Arglant System Cometary Halo
Sarian Star Kingdom Forge Ship Aggravator, Fall +1380 years

The vast pyramid shaped Xant orbital burned, gout's of matter devouring reality devouring not flame drifting intact in geometric horror through the atmosphere of the once temple studded world nearby before carving destruction through its geology. No one knew why only the mad intellects on the orbital. They had turned on themselves and their vassals but then they had barely cared for those vassals for generations and the great deception was growing. Thin. Sarian and other vassal fleets keeping up the illusion of Xant unity and power. After all who would dare challenge them? Who would dare?

From the world a last set of refugee transports urged upwards and seemingly lazily a string of flame from the burning station reached out and they simply ceased to be. Around the system Xant spheres of all sizes hung motionless and dead or had already vanished in displays of destruction that blinded or drove minds to lunacy.

Morad Dos Saria, prince of the realm turned from the bridge display in disgust, his sheathed royal blade digging into one slightly too portly side and glinting in the long view sensors. There supposed masters. Mad. Mad for centuries and getting worse. The extremes of sanity and rational thought taken to beyond survival into a realm that could only be called mad to “lesser” intellects.

Beside him a gaunt figure stood in alien robes stood still staring at his home worlds destruction.

“Unlimited power and unlimited corruption come from the ultimate godless to infect the believer in its burning”
“Hah, I may not believe in your gods Oroas but yes I can see it. I am sorry old friend. There’s nothing more we can do for your people here… I cannot risk more of my transports and still if were to so much as step outside their new enlightened laws.. or if they saw this ship..”

The Arglant priest still did not turn as he watched his world burn.

“Indeed. I know we are not warriors your highness but is there nothing we can..”
“Not yet old friend. Not yet. The Reach fleet is still active and grinder take anyone rather than visit there home system still if you want to retain sanity”
“They never allowed us to see it you know… said it would corrupt our views. They always ..liked to hear us speak especially on temple day. I did not understand until I was a primus you know”..

Morad grimaced. “We know from our early days. When we tell our tales. Or we are taken to there latest ..fields.”
The high priest turned, hands winding into his cloaks before he joined the prince and the duo began striding towards the command citadels doors. “Would that we had similar ….but then we would not …entertain them so. Our greatest works now buried in your holds rather than our temple libraries. The mighty and the godly …reduced to no more than ..Entertainment"

The last words were hissed. It was the first time Morad had ever heard anger from an Arglant much less Oroas and even some members of the otherwise beyond professional command crew looked up in shock.

“Where will it end?”
“Nowhere good while they still live old friend. Nowhere good”

The blade sang as the power blades tried to bite into it, ancient superconductor weave diverting it into the hilts crystal matrices as the two figures struggled once more, now powdered and wounds bound, now moving not in raw fury but in neat proscribed step the floor strewn with petals and carefully inked glyphs by the joined clerics of both clans who’s incense burners filled the air and whose chanting reverberated it all the while the heralds seemingly suddenly absent from view if one did not know where to look..

Saria System Fall plus 1630 years, The Second Fall.
Battle of Saria

The hammer ships of the Arglant forward and heavy squadrons were nothing more than moth eaten remnants by something spewing into reality where once there protected fire lanes and formations had lay and the king wept but not for them. Shattered Xant spheres drifted here and there, there hulls spitting out horror no more. He certainly did not weep for them.. He could not blame them for failure. Maybe he had pushed too far too fast and his son ..his damned son. He gripped the hilt of his blade, the body of his progeny in front of him still cooling.

“we were not READY! And how ..how could we know!”

Doth Saria raged and wept around the room for nearly two hours before he was approached.
A fleet functionary stood from the command pit, admirals markings showing, years of service and his breeding should have made him unmovable but still his voice rang with emotion.

‘Sire I beg to report the sixth wave has left the surface, the Glorious Dawn is now in the Aspect .. sector. Sire it is ..hunting the remaining worlds and is expected in no less than thirty hours ..sire it ..it is reported that the Sorak systems worlds are …no longer there, the effect is ..spreading. “

He turned to look at one of the monitors.

Saria seemed to be burning. It burned under the light of a a thousand warheads spewing from his own juggernoughts. The remains of third fleet burning there magazines dry. Not to purge it of the Xant filth but to warm the atmosphere long enough to evacuate his people or at least those that could be saved. The Glorious Dawns primary weapon had not just reduced one star ..no in their final spit of revenge against their rebelling tools that had been finally pushed too far, the Glorious Dawn, the prototype of the Xant Rationalist factions galactic conquest warships primary weapon did not just erase one star with a fleets worth of weapons no it alone erased stellar clusters. The very cluster they called home.

He stood.

“Have the sixth fleet and the remaining forge ships and Arglanti escort the ..rest of us away …ready all remaining vessels. …Prep all warheads for …contact detonation and …set all ships on course for the Dawn..”

A feral grin.

“one last time into the fire”.

As the command crews struggled to comply he strode from the room followed by his guard as the acknowledgements came from the fleets of the allied stars outside. And so the Royal line of Saria strode from visible and known history.

A figure however from the ops pit followed his FI ops tabs prominent sashayed forward. No rank but a certain deadliness that made the royal guards seemingly stare as he caught up in the corridor out of ear shot and vision of the gathered admiralty.

“My king … then the blade must go with the sixth fleet as must your blood.”

Doth Saria turned as if on a pivot.
“Has that blood not failed us enough?” ground out like gravel.
“My king ..not ..quite yet. You did not listen.”
“No ..perhaps I did not… but he was my SON.”
“and our blood tells yes sire, but he cost us almost everything and we do not have that luxury and ..the line must continue and sire ..so was and am I. Purge him.”

The royal guards pivoted and drew blades stabbing just once, against their will, eyes rolling up in denial as commands etched into their nervous system overrode sanity all the while the lithe FI officer tapped on his com console. Eventually each guardsman stood and drove his blade inwards.

The figure of royalty on the floor began the slow process of bleeding out. The blades however not controlled by thought had been held with skill and had left him time.

The FI officer stared down a long and familiar shaped nose appeared as his face rippled and the holo mask turned off.

“Long live the king. Long live me”
“….. the hidden line.. I had thought it a myth.”
“No .. the Xants could have always burned you ..and ripped your mind. It was ..necessary for a backup to be present. I respected you and I will respect you in death but Im sorry ..my brother was a fool and he will be damned by us for millennia as was Asorak before him.”
"no..no it "
"Yes. Im afraid its ..neccesary for a scapegoat"
“the lords will never..”
“No ..but they do not have to know … we will ..guide them. And after all ..no one on this ship will see our people again”
“Coward!”
“Realist. Now come father ..it is time for your pyre soon and I have a flight to catch.”

As he spoke he reached down and drew the royal blade, staring at it a moment before driving it downward, wiping it on the robes and then sliding it into a neat backpack, the over jeweled clasps that had held it left on the floor. As more fleet intel staff began passing in the corridor, weapons glimmering with discharging heat he did not look back. He followed them almost but not quite blending into the crowd. Once the sleek black FI transport had left the flagship he called his command group over.

“If we are to survive this sunless void long enough to reach a safe harbor in numbers..we must be ..ruthless.. Target the Arglanti escort carriers that have remained once the rest of the fleets have left and have the marines prep to hit their cargo ships. Operation is go..pull out of everywhere but sixth.”

“yes Doth Saria!”
“No ..no I think not. I have never been that .. just ..just call me oh …”

He stared at a discarded Arglanti drinks canister on the transports floor for a moment before a nasty grin spread.
“Call me Dasarin.”

The cleric could speak she gave him that.

He sub vocced in reply

“Naughty”
“Oh I’ve only begun to be naughty after all a girls just got to have her own Juggernaut first.”

Light of Iras
Philip Gerson
Venti-class Light Freighter, Traveling through the Attek System, Punvar Belt, Beta Quadrant
April 7th, 2080

"Boss, we'll be translating back into real space in forty seconds, hyperwaves are ceasing, hyperdrive is being powered down, beginning translation."

Philip listened, sort of, as one of his two pilots was guiding the ship, a light freighter rated to carry 100,000 tonns of equipment, supplies and items, out of the hyperspace they had been traveling along since they had left Starbase 17, a decent sized Navy run port that was in the Tomas System, which is where Gerson found the cheapest fuel for his mag-fusion impulse drives; he still couldn't get over the fact that the fucker with the mobile refueling tank wanted 54,000 pounds for half a tank, things people charged for these days was outrageous.

Within a few seconds, the freighter would appear into the real space in the Attek System, an uninhabited system, officially anyways, that resided in the Punvar Belt, which was known as the 'new' frontier for Hibernian spacers, as it was a collection of passable systems in between the Pequen Cluster, the last colonized region of Hibernian territory, and the rest of the Beta Quadrant, so anyone making runs with other nations or states had to go through the Punvar Belt. Normally, that trade was pretty minimal but the formation of the Guild in the last five years, a private shipping company that had set a high standard for quality shipments, and quality of it's ships and the life of those aboard, and had increasingly gotten lucky at getting the best customers, so smaller private time shippers, often families, like Phillip had to go for more risky contracts, like the one he was currently running. Picked the deal up in a hub on Ragesi, he was shipping assorted metallic plates, mineral canisters, fusion tools and crafting components to a colony world about two weeks 'north east' of the Belt's exit, and they were already two weeks into the journey.

The freighter lurched as it slowed from its faster-then-light speeds and back onto normal sub-light propulsion, the six magnetic pulse engines in the rear of the ship, three primary thrusters with three smaller secondaries, turned on as they burned white hot and pushed the ship forward at respectable speeds. The ship wasn't large, only clocking in at under half of the weight she could carry, and was of a modular design. The propulsion block was at the rear of the ship and connected to the front end, which housed quarters, mess, bridge, and other facilities, by two spinal connectors, ontop and below, leaving a large space in between them. This space would be filled by SSC's, or Standardized Shipping Containers, large blocks, painted a number of colors and pockmarked with corporate insignia's or graffiti depending where you got them. The SSC's would be detached and handed over, or they could have their contents unloaded by attached docking systems, either route was possible. The freighter of this design could hold at maximum 3 of the largest variant of SSC's, and that's what Phillip currently had hooked up, each filled to the brim with the materials he was currently shipping. In addition to this, the rear 'block' that housed propulsion also housed a small hangar unit on top of the main framework in a trapezoid shaped structure that was integrated into the hull and more heavily armored. Inside was two shuttles, moderate size, mostly used for travel into a planetoid or carrying small shipments to destinations.

"Boss, we're getting some light contacts on the sensors, possibly a starport?"

Phillip scoffed "If you want to call a rusting hulk a port, sure. The freeholders on Attek II 'maintain' it, and I use that word very loosely."

"I thought there wasn't anyone out here."

"Everyone that doesn't want to be found, so no one." was Phillip's short answer.

His crew was relatively small, the main permanent crew consisted of himself, his brother James and a friend from his time in the Navy, Henry Artis. They made the informal 'command' staff of the ship, and were in charge of the other forty seven members of the crew. 11 of the crew worked in the kitchen, another 17 in engineering with Henry where they maintained the engines, reactor and hyperdrive, 10 more were 'work hands', which meant they helped unload the cargo, keep the holds clean, and do odd and ends jobs, and the other 6 members of the crew were his pilots, they flew both the ship and the shuttles and he had made good money for them to sign on; all but one was former Navy, and all had hundreds of hours in the cockpit, so they were experienced, which was more then most of his crew, who he considered green at best. A few, mostly his kitchen and some engineers, had been with him for a few years, and he in turn paid them a bit more, but he couldn't afford that much. Hopefully, this 400,000 pound contract would be over quickly, this damn Belt and the bad people in it made him feel uncomfortable and he wouldn't lose that feeling till they were back home.
