RIVERSIDE – President Stephen Hayes has today called for a peaceful resolution to the brewing tensions in the disputed Seversk region. Sparked by the murder of an Elesarian family by alleged Stasnovan perpetrators, the crisis put the region on the brink of war with the downing of a Stasnovan fighter aircraft which allegedly strayed into Elesarian airspace, reprisal attacks by Stasnovan artillery, and the deployment of Elesarian tanks to the Stasnovan-controlled half of Cherkesk.
Hayes stressed the importance of diplomacy and offered to host peace talks in Riverside. "I call on Elesar to immediately withdraw from Stasnovan Cherkesk. Such an act, and others like it, is provocative and unnecessary," he said.
"Both sides need to exercise restraint and avoid further escalating the already tense situation. It is in the national interests of both nations to avoid war. Mr. Krasnov, Mr. Antaryanov: think about the young men and women serving your country and whether you are willing to send them to die in a war that can be avoided through constructive diplomacy. That, not bloodshed, is the mark of a true leader. The city of Riverside is always ready to host peace talks should both sides decide to demonstrate their commitment to diplomacy over violence and war."
Hayes, who has placed a strong emphasis on upholding worldwide peace during his four years in office, albeit to mixed results, also offered condolences and called for an independent, transparent investigation into the murder of the Tulev family and subsequent anti-Stasnovan reprisal attacks.
"Both sides need to aggressively prosecute any crimes against innocent civilians, regardless of the ethnicities of the perpetrators or victims," he said. "Anything less would call into serious question the impartiality of the relevant prosecuting authority."
