The State of Ruthenia
Poltava - May 9th 2025

"That fiasco was in general quite embarrassing." General Matthias Laberenz spoke from where he stood on a small bluff overlooking the collected force of the Ruthenian 5th Army. At the moment a vast sea of tents and pre-fabricated buildings built up on the plains outside of Poltava, the eighth largest city in Ruthenia over the course of the last eight months. The fiasco to which he referred was the now relentlessly mocked 'Belkan War', proof that yet again the Imperials were neigh unstoppable when someone bothered to get the Old Empire moving. Eleven million men from the Empire alone had marched on the Commonwealth of Birkaine and her allies and before even a month had passed some diplomat from Mu had through some true miracle of God negotiated a peace to the conflict before it could even start, thus becoming the next in the long list of the wars that had failed to become the Second Great War.

Now of course, Laberenz ruminated on darkly, Birkaine was in a state of civil war that had seen Ruthenia move the 8th, 6th and 2nd armies to the Rusyn-Birkanian border to secure it from spill over fighting while the occasional horde of refugees were granted asylum, as was proper for the Rusyns to extend as the Birkanians had lifted them from perdition a mere eight years before. There were rumors among the soldiery and the people about invasion, to create a buffer zone in the Far East Oblast of Birkaine to prevent fighting directly on Ruthenia's borders, it was incredibly ironic how the mighty had fallen, really. He chuckled darkly as he went over some maps for the upcoming operations while he reminisced. The general consensus had once been that the most dreaded alliance in the world would have been the world superpowers of the Federated States of California, the Birkanian Commonwealth and the Mu Empire, that alliance had come to pass, and it had died with a whimper.

Of course, that was not the concern of him in the now as he once more looked out over his troops in a distant review, the bulbous bodies of T-80U main battle tanks sat guns angled upward in an awkward mechanical salute as they sat idle, waiting on the inevitable orders from the Generalissimo in Kiev. Not far from their staging area he could barely make out some of the outer perimeter of General Klavdiya Stanislava's 4th infantry army, his primary support element for the upcoming Operation Silverfish, the first of a series of operations involving the Eslovakian-backed Republic of Pripyat to the north, in theory a democratic republic, in reality a puppet-state with some glorified devolution of power for domestic affairs. Eslovakia had seized the region in the late stages of the Ruthenian Civil War to assist the Rusyn people or so they claimed and to their credit had gotten the northeast of the Ukraine running again. All they had to do to maintain that prosperity was the Nordgeld, perhaps not a physical tribute any longer in the form of gold or jewels but a payment of protection none the less and the moment they stopped, Eslovakia would let the Evil Fascists in southern Ruthenia overrun them. Having heard the propaganda himself endlessly since his posting here eight months prior over hijacked television signals, radio waves and simple loudspeakers when close enough to the border he had no doubt the Pripyati Rusyns had been thoroughly turned against their brethren here in the south, filled with visions of monsters and demons likes of which the Sunese had instilled into their peoples regarding the Californians many years before in the Adrianic War.

At the insistence of the Ministry of Communications, countermeasures had been set up along the border and it was a constant battle of wills for the hearts and minds of the Rusyn people, one side proclaiming the fascists to the south to be daemonic entities straight from the darkest pits of hell and the other side proclaiming the same to be their saviors from the Norse invaders. Laberenz looked skyward as the distant shadow of a sonic boom filled the air, a grim smile graced his Belkan features as aged but capable Su-25 strike fighters from the Ruthenian Air Force made their first trip of the coming war northward, a fast journey lasting mere minutes where entire flights would rake down the border annihilating forward border defense posts and open up the way for the army units. He wordlessly for a reasonable paranoia of spies had his orders to his section commanders handed out via simple paper which was deployed by runners, from here on though radio transmissions would make up the majority of communications for the army's units.

Some time passed before a satellite telephone rang, distantly hearing it the general after taking the proper encryption procedures answered the device. "It's time." The two words came from General Mark Valshannar, Head of State and Government for the State of Ruthenia, supreme commander of the armed forces etc. Laberenz nodded, mostly to himself. "Understood, sir." While the two officers were fire-forged friends from the civil war, a rigid chain of command demanded professionalism and the former mercenary had never deviated from that professionalism. The phone was disconnected a second later before Laberenz took up a radio. He neglected to give any speech, instead calling for immediate mobilization which he could see was being undertaken from his position above the assorted units, though he did give a small piece. "Soldiers of Ruthenia, beyond the distant hills so well known lays the so called Republic of Pripyat, where your brother Rusyns are cruelly denied their right to self-rule and determination by distant overlords in the North. You ride forward now to deliver them into true liberty, and all the Ukraine rides with you."

State of Ruthenia
Senior Airman Taras Sewick - Ruthenian Air Force
May 9th, 2025

Contrary to the mainstay policies of the Californian Air Force, or the Belkan Luftwaffe, not everyone in a plane was an officer in the Ruthenian Air Force. Such was evidenced with twenty-four year old Taras Sewick, a young man from Donetsk in the south near the Zhongren Border he had been serving in the air force since his initial conscription at 16, not quite ten years back he had proven himself to be supremely skilled at essentially whatever he did along with his other duties and was due for officers candidacy owing to his ability and competency, not to mention it would skip him up entire pay grades (of course to temper that his responsibilities would effectively quadruple).

SA Sewick was currently musing over the fact he was about to start a war, not personally but his hand would be the direct ones that started the long list of casualties that would from that point forward mount until one side or the other yielded, and he very much doubted that the central government in Kiev would yield. Pripyat, the Eslovakian puppet-state to the north had too few forces to effectively resist them, and the Democratic League was far enough away, excluding Eslovakia, that the Ruthenians could overrun their oppressed brothers and force a peace before their masters could arrive to bring them back into the fold. "Three minutes to battlespace, final preparations." The somewhat garbled voice of Lieutenant Colonel Olexiy Pasternak came over the radio, on muscle memory and instinct SA Sewick ran down a final memorized list before, like the rest of his flight and in similar motion to other Ruthenian flights headed to the Pripyatan border, switched their weapons systems on. "Hey, that feeling of unease?" He muttered to his weapons operator, Anatoli Gavrilyuk who was busy running last second motions like he had done. "Yeah, I know the feeling." Gavrilyuk finally responded as they reached the very cusp of the battlespace.

"Commence targeting, begin combat operations." Lt. Col Pasternak's voice came over the radio again.

"It's gone now." Sewick said as the Su-25 began its combat run.

"Home is where the war is." Gavrilyuk responded simply as far below them the first bomblets released by the other members of the flights made impact with their targets on the ground. Their own Su shuddered as they released their own payload over the first targets... Operation Silverfish had begun with no fanfare and little warning save that the Pripyatan absolutely had to see the large formations of strike fighters and medium bombers coming at them, and this turned out to be true as they were answered seconds later in the form of missile chimes from SAM batteries ground side.

The latest in a long list of wars on the planet of Rostil had begun.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Border Post 'Dane' - South-Central Pripyat
May 9th, 2025

The Norgeld, they called it in the west, the benefits of working with, as opposed to against Eslovakia and the Democratic League. They called it slavery and said that they had sold their will as a people. That they had given their souls up to their 'viking masters'. Their government went off on rants about the inherent deviousness of the Eslovakians, of how they would surely abandon the Pripyatans after they had tired of them, or that they would increase their Geld as the Krone of old did to the petty kings in Britannia until they were bankrupt and usurped. No such thing had occurred, no motions were made by the Eslovakian Parliament to annex Pripyat, or to increase a burden upon it to look after itself or any such motion over the count of years since the Eslovaks had established Pripyat as an independent entity from the rest of the Ukraine. Of course, that mattered little at the moment.

Smoke and fire filled the air where Border Posting 'Dane' had stood mere minutes before its present condition, a stout little building that served as a customs office had been reduced to a pile of rubble by the bombs of a Ruthenian Su-25, while the surrounding support facilities had met a similar fate. The border with Ruthenia was completely fortified, Eslovakia had invested millions in a six foot thick, fifteen foot high reinforced concrete border wall with the fascist state to the southwest. Postings like Dane had a fortified gate that guarded openings in that wall, which was now on fire, reduced to little more than a smoldering reminder that in the modern day, walls did not do much to defend the land from foreign invaders.

Behind that now pockmarked and collapsing wall was the relatively flat terrain of the northern Ukraine, in the relative distance of around 80km there was the city of Skvyra to the direct north-east, while the city of Luhansk was to the south-east. Some fifteen kilometers behind the border wall was an Eslovakian Blue Star humanitarian camp, which in contrast to the border wall and its pummeled stations, had been left unmarked in this first wave of enemy contacts. Placed somewhat away though still in the immediate vicinity around the ruined border posting and others like it up and down the border a number of Birkanian constructed 9K37 surface-to-air missiles in addition to a number of Eslovakian LVSR-10 surface-to-air missiles shot upward towards the offending aircraft after a lull period of about ten of the longest seconds in human history. Several scored hits on the Ruthenian planes, fireballs flashing across the sky as the flying machines became falling coffins for the men inside them. This repeated for a second volley before with a sudden abruptness, the SAM sites were silenced by a series of furious explosions from the impacts of bomblets that rendered the positions destroyed.

The skies were contested a moment later with the arrival of multiple flights of Eslovakian JAS-39X Ragnarok fighters, more than a match for the ground-oriented Su-25s flown by Ruthenia, as well as being able to content with their MiG-29 escorts. The aerial battle was as swift as it was decisive as the stealth Gripen derivative tore the vanguard of Ruthenia's air force into pieces, though it was not a total victory, two of the Gripens were likewise shot down without ceremony by the heavier MiG-29s, stealth or not. Those who were able ejected from their failing planes and deployed chutes, drifting earthward the two Eslovakian pilots were greeted from their vantage point the miles long lines of Ruthenian soldiery that were headed towards Pripyat's shattered border.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
DLFOR Base 'Irene' - Northeastern Pripyat
May 9th, 2025

Lieutenant General Pavlo Wasylyshyn was the highest ranking Pripyatan officer in Pripyat. As of five minutes ago, his splendidly boring day had been officially ruined and he was now running around like a chicken with his head cut off as he relayed orders (via radio of course) to the brigades of the one-hundred ninety-six thousand Pripyati Defense Forces to full mobilization, reserves included, as the state of Ruthenia launched their invasion into the sovereign republic. He was legally subservient to one General Jan Kjellsson of the Eslovakian Army but in a contrary position to those of his predecessors Kjellsson had allowed the 'Ukrainians' as they called the Rusyn people, to handle the majority of their own affairs since his stationing in Pripyat two years prior. General Kjellsson was at the moment likewise in a mode of organized chaos as with powerful presence relayed orders to his subordinates who relayed those orders to section commanders across the country wherein the Eslovakian backed Pripyati Defense Force would receive the support from heavy weapons and artillery they would no doubt desperately need in the coming days and weeks to repel their Ruthenian brethren as it was the Eslovaks who operated armored vehicles heavier than an APC bought from Californian overstock and then handed off to the Pripyatans for their meager armored corps.

The plan was for now that there was no plan, the Pripyatis and their suzerain were reacting, not proactive in the current moment. Planes were scrambling from NAS Falkinge outside of Odessa in the north to counter the influx of Ruthenian MiGs and Sukhoi aircraft that had interdicted into Pripyati airspace, while on the ground units who had trained for this day for years found themselves going into motions that had long since become muscle memory as they mobilized across the country. The response itself was uniform, though in places ragged, especially along the border where the initial defensive forces had simply been overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the Ruthenian offensive. While base Irene had gone on lockdown with the first shots fired due to it being situated in a direct path from Chernivtsi Border Posting the first marshaling of Pripyatan and Eslovakian forces would take place at Camps Kallax and Ronneby that guarded Pripyat City, the dejure administration centre of the country (though most was carried out at Irene).

Whoever it was who said massed sneak attacks couldn't be done in the twenty-first century? They lied.

From Kallax and Ronneby the 4th and 8th Brigades of the PDF and elements of the Eslovakian Army in Pripyat or EAP would forward deploy to defensive positions around the cities of Berdiansk, Severnaya and Kivorohad. This initial force within thirty six hours would be reinforced by heavier elements primarily from the EAP along with smaller PDF support units. In the air the Pripyati Aerial Defense Force (PADF) would deploy their flew flights (there were six) of JAS-39 'Gripen' light fighters alongside a compliment of Eslovakian JAS-39 'Gripen' light fighters and JAS-39X 'Ragnarok' light stealth fighters as well as Kalberg 42 Natteravn heavy stealth fighters to contest the airspace above Pripyat.

Along the shore of Pripyat primarily deployed from NAS Falkinge the very small Pripyati Naval Defense Force (PNDF) alongside the Eslovakian Navy's contingent in Pripyat would deploy to counter the Ruthenian Navy's offshore operations, though in the current moment they were scrambling to gather their personnel to their ships and get underway.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Border Post 'Ternopil' - South-Central Pripyat
May 9th, 2025
Corporal Maria Jozić, Pripyati Defense Force
Border Patrol Unit 37

The Ak5 shuddered again with recoil as the automatic rifle was emptied in the period of around four seconds. It was poor trigger control and poorer ammunition conservation, she knew that, and in that exact moment she didn't exactly care. Corporal Maria Jozić dared to stand up in the next second, running with hopeless abandon across a five yard stretch of ground that led into the wreckage of what used to be a building. There was a difference between cover and concealment absolutely, and the thinnish walls of the former border posting wouldn't offer much in the way of the first but at this exact moment she did not object to having literally anything between her and the enemy downrange.

Downrange from the Corporal's position was a combination of fast moving armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles in addition to soft bellied transport trucks, the things she'd been aiming at, of the Ruthenian army. These were the spearhead to the first ground units of the Ruthenian invasion. The trucks stopped first, give or take a half-mile out disentangling their attached infantry units, mobile riflemen by the hazy looks of them, she didn't have much time to ascertain with great detail before the chaingun of the BMP-3 started shooting at her position.

"On me, on me!" Those were the words of Lieutenant Sigvard Eriksson of the EAP in the clearest Rusyn imaginable as the ridiculously tall blonde man rallied what remained of the defensive detail that had been Border Patrol Unit 37, of the 100 man contingent (a small force, really), forty of them were left, the rest having been lost in the damage caused by the airstrikes that had ended what felt like seconds ago (though it was more like two minutes). The LT pointed hastily at Private Viktor Kozel, one of the closest things they had to a heavy weapons specialist with his Californian made M239 light machine gun. "Kozel! Get that MG set up and lay down suppressive fire!" Without a word more needed Kozel dropped the bipod on the MG on a relatively stable rock that used to be part of a concrete wall, working quickly to clear and load the weapon before in the span of about five very long seconds a stream of 5.56mm Californian rounds started firing off. The first stream of fire was accompanied by the fire of a few of the Ak5 rifles that most of the others were armed with into the side of one of the closer APCs, a BTR-4 domestically produced in Ruthenia after the Civil War had ended. The 8x8 swiveled its main turret, a 30mm autocannon towards the entrenched soldiers before as though someone's silent prayers had been answered, it and its compatriots exploded in a fury of fire and steel, the supersonic boom of a JAS-39 following it with no ceremony. There was a very short celebratory whoop before the Pripyatis and their Eslovak commander began a very hasty foot-mobile retreat to a predesignated fall back point that had a cache of ammunition and a few antitank missiles and a launcher for them which would very quickly come in handy.

The State of Ruthenia
Poltava - May 9th 2025

The three dimensional map of the northern Ukraine complete with settlements and infrastructure markers was a gift from the Commonwealth of Birkaine before the start of the latest Birkanian Civil War. General Laberenz stood over the table that formed the map, glowing lightly with its various colorful markers, like a God almost. His most simple motions directing tens of thousands of Ruthenian soldiers forward, into formations, through engagements, the entire thing was eerily disconnected, impersonal, mechanical. This ritual of mechanical rigidness was emulated by other general officers and their subordinates across the border front to varying degrees as the Ruthenian line advanced in as close to lock-step as grand formations on this scale could manage.

General Stanislava's mechanized and motorized infantry units followed as well as spearheaded his armor commanders' units into the Pripyati interior, so far clashes with border guards had been going well with no major turn-backs or upsets in the overall strategic command. The Pripyatis had driven off a few in tactical maneuvers however those units reinforcements overran those positions shortly after. It was as was said long ago, quantity was a quality all its own, and in this case both were true, the numerically superior Ruthenians like their Pripyati counterparts were some of the most veteran soldiers anywhere on the Earth, and unlike the child-soldiers of Africa, every single one of them was worth his or her weight in literal Nibelung gold.

The chattering of somewhere around half a million radios reverberated in the room, men crying for air support, medivac and the simple request of retreat proved that their smaller adversaries were by no means lightweights and had every intention of making Ruthenia bleed for disrupting their tenuous peace. There was no problem with this, pieces on the board were moved forward, backward, to the flanks, where they were needed. Pripyat would run out of bullets before either Eslovakia could reach her or Ruthenia ran out of sons ready to kill and die for her. It was a macabre thought though, to fight war as the Imperials did it, undulating the enemy until he simply could not make up for the body count of the forces arraigned against him. Reducing the men to statistics was not hard, no, it was the subtle knowing that each of those men had seen the worst humanity had to offer and had survived it because they were stronger, wittier, simply luckier than anyone else, and now they were going to die to a pharmacist or a baker. God above he hated citizen-soldiers.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Ruthenian 5th Army - May 9th - 2025
Private Ivan Zelenko

Ivan Zelenko was not a life-long soldier like many in the Ruthenian army, he did not see the civil war, or rather, he did, but from the other side. He was the prey among the predators, the sheep thrown amongst the wolves. He recalled the era of banditry and strife just as much as every other Ruthenian to be born before or during The War, the only war that had ever mattered. No, Private Zelenko was not a life long soldier, he was a fresh recruit, sent through a rigorous training course ('boot camp' as Californians called it), He was hunkered down with his kit (he was a rifleman in the infantry) in the back of one of the soft-bellied trucks used by the Ruthenian Army to transport their motorized infantry brigades across distances that were unrealistic to expect mobile infantry (men who walked) to do so and where mechanized infantry (men accompanied by tanks and IFVs in APCs) wasn't present.

Their advance force had been a mechanized unit who had struck against the Pripyati defensive line that was the border, it was more well defended than originally suggested but still fell, within an hour and a half, the Pripyati Self-Defense Force had wisely retreated to consolidate their forces while in the skies above the Eslovakian Air Force harassed the Ruthenian Air Force as Pripyat had no air force of its own. It was a hotly contested grappling contest in either threatre, while the Ruthenian Navy was still yet to enter combat operations zone off the coast, Ivan was unlikely to see any of their work however owing to the fact that he was some miles inward. "Dismount!" Lieutenant Yaroslav Chownyk's voice shouted across the integrated radios that were perched on each soldier's shoulder in a pouch. He was further back in the collection of trucks which had halted.

They would be reverting to the heel-toe express from here on out for about twenty 'clicks' overland, working to dislodge remaining Eslo-Pripyati resistance in the area, pacify the region, establish ground control and over all be the rearguard to the advance vanguard which had slown further inland to allow the time for the logistical trains to catch up. Those bulbous bodies hurried along with all the speed that was logically necessary to avoid both groundfighters and the bombs of the Eslovak Air Force above them. So far, Zelenko had noted, they had not seen any of Pripyat's defenders be they Rusyn or Varangians. There were sprinkled ruins of what had once been jet fighters of both Rusyn and Eslovak make, there were the ruins of buildings and of course, the bodies of those who had stood to their last breath dying to defend their homeland, even though they were slaves. Zelenko noted bitterly that such noble men should not have had to die.

No one spoke, fanning out in a sort of bladed formation across about half a mile of territory the soldiers were alert enough but not so much so that they were paranoid.

Which was when the gunfire started.

Zelenko dropped to the ground bringing his rifle up as he did so in a uniform motion that he'd perfected to the point it had become muscle memory, down the line this was repeated by many. "Where the hell are they!?" Someone cried over the now pervasive silence, a single shot only meant one thing, Zelenko realized with dread, a fucking sharpshooter.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Pripyat City - May 9th 2025

President Fedot Popov, elected in 2024 mostly as proof that nations did not need martial law to function in the face of a crises, stood behind his desk in the presidential office of Pripyat's small executive house as the situation, still developing as it was, was explained to him as a courtesy by an Eslovakian General. The Eslovakians had no legal obligation to inform the president of anything they were doing, they did so as to maintain the illusion that Pripyat was an equal partner in its defense even though everyone was well aware that was not the case. Their relationship had progressed since the establishment of Pripyat almost ten years ago, the young country had gone from a place of martial law to a functioning democracy all while under threat from internal rebellion, foreign invasion, and the Wrath of God himself. The Ruthenian region had been lucky enough not to be hit by from on high, though the ensuing earthquakes had done much to damage the three nations, in addition an unwelcome Iron Sea tidal wave slammed the nation's seawalls which, thank God held. Further north, the nation of Eslovakia was barely touched, dealing with the event much like the Federated States of California had, handing out aid to the nations in need, though of course prioritizing their friends and those they believed had the capacity to become friendly.

Pripyat had needed no money itself, though the deployments in Pripyat also decreased as the Pripyati Self-Defense Force was brought to the fore of defense for the young nation. The Eslovakians still maintained a sizable presence in the country, and were two days away uncontested if they needed more. Two Eslovakian Divisions, mostly support elements but with a few combat arms, would move into entrenched positions around Pripyat City and around DLFOR Base Irene, the center of operations for the Pripyati government and military bodies in the nation.

The Eslovakian Air Force was more proactive than the ground forces on the account that while lower in number they made up for it with their obvious effect on the battlefield, that and Pripyat had no air force of its own so they quite literally needed to support the PDF if they expected it to do well. So far, it had been doing well. Though it was still the initial stages of Ruthenia's invasion, the PDF Border Guard had, under the guidance and support of its Eslovakian friends, managed to win a few piecemeal battles, but sensibly most threw up a fighting retreat while the Eslovaks and the PDF's other, proper units, made ready for the fight. While in the air the aforementioned E.A.F. was performing well against Ruthenia's MiG-based air force, the bodies of planes from both sides littered the ground alongside the burned out hulks of vehicles and of course, the bodies of men, all of which would grow in number.

The commander of DLFOR Irene, a tall blonde man that President Popov had only met twice, by the name of Jan Kjellsson had already phoned Yekaterinberg, who sent a simple message to their commander in the field; Hold the Line. They were coming, though they were not magical, everyone's spirits were lifted in that instant to hear that the Eslovakians would defend their smaller friend. It was now only a matter of lasting until Eslovakia arrived.

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Severnaya, Pripyat - DLFOR Base Ronneby
May 9th 2025
Corporal Leonid Kozel

Severnaya was one of the larger cities in Pripyat, home to some seventy thousand people it was fairly small as cities world wide went but large for Pripyati standards, getting the barely inhabited half of the country had that affect. Leonid Kozel had lived in Severnaya his entire life, and though he was only 19, he knew well the stories of The War, the only war that had ever mattered. How the Imperials came, and how the country collapsed in the aftermath. He also knew how the Eslovakians came down from the north and saved them from their selves, though they told it differently in Ruthenia as he understood it. They decried their saviors as foreign devils, invaders into lands not theirs. Kozel had no reason to believe this line, every Eslovakian he'd ever met had treated him decently.

Currently the Corporal was ducked inside the drivers assembly of an Eslovakian built Panzarvagn 1, an older model that was seeing its way out of Eslovakian service as it was being replaced by its sister, the Panzarvagn 2. While older it wasn't obsolete by any means, it sported a top speed of 50km an hour across country, 70km an hour on paved roads, had armor that could shrug off the rounds of a Californian built M-1 Abrams and a 120mm cannon with which to engage armor and land hard targets with, as well as an M806 heavy machine gun. Two other men were in the tank with him, a fellow Pripyati, Private Kyrylo Shwetz and their commander, an Eslovakian by the name of Stefan Olsson who wore a lieutenant's bars on his shoulder. They were the lead tank in their platoon of four, all of which were the same, the tanks, manned by three men, had two Pripyati crewmen and one Eslovakian officer or NCO, as it was elsewhere in the forces.

"Takes us out, Kozel, nice and easy." Olsson said in his thick Eslovakian accented Ruthenian, as he sealed the hatch above him, the other two men followed suit and got into position, the tank's engine roared to life a few seconds later as Kozel shifted it into gear, the lumbering armored beast making its way out of the vehicle pool of DLFOR Base Ronneby, the closest army station to the city that hadn't been bombed to smithereens. The city itself was a distant gray line just on the horizon, not close enough to make anything out but close enough to know it was there. From their rallying point they would advance to the opposite side of Severnaya, setting down a defensive line, the first of many being set up across the country and in similar manner as the Eslovakian Air Force tried their best to slow the Ruthenians down by bombing their formations relentlessly. Corporal Kozel's formation of twenty tanks, the entirety of the 3rd Regiment it was a bit heavy, the bog-standard was fourteen tanks, based on the Californian model, the six additional were actually belonging to the 5th Armored, which they would link up with later if possible. They would've been under the 3rd Regiment if they were using the old Communist Ruthenian and current Birkanian models.

Behind the tanks a collection of other vehicles began to move, artillery units, logistical support trucks and armored personnel carriers that were carrying the 4th Shock Infantry, one of the few mechanized regiments in the PDF. It wasn't a sad collection, it didn't belay that there were only a hundred ninety-six thousand Pripyati soldiers, severely augmented by half a million Eslovaks, or that they couldn't legally conscript to further augment their numbers. They marched out with the same pride and conviction that the Ostenbelkans did to defend their lands when the Belkans reunified their homeland before Skyfall. They were scared, too, of course. Two million three hundred thousand Ruthenians were coming at them with all the wrath their nation could muster behind them, singing marches and dropping bombs and artillery shells to precede their tanks and their men.

It was what it was going to be, a bitter and desperate fight of a small nation fighting for its very survival. They just prayed, each of them, the atheists too, that Eslovakia got there soon enough to make a difference. If Pripyat City capitulated before they got there, then there was no point, Ruthenia would have won. But Kozel didn't think like that, neither did many of Pripyat's defenders, their language was the same as the Ruthies, but they were not the same people, not anymore, and they would fight bitterly and long for their independence.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Ruthenian 5th Army - May 9th - 2025
Private Ivan Zelenko
Forward Operating Base - 5KM inside Pripyati border via border posting 'Dane'

If is what war was, he had seen enough of it to last him two lifetimes. Besides the mind-numbing boredom of the rear echelons he got to see first hand what the Pripyatis were capable of via the broken bodies of his countrymen. It was a horrible feeling being unable to do anything about it, watching helplessly as they bled to death despite the best effort of combat surgeons. The sun had sank and the initial hours of the invasion were fading away, the Pripyatis and their overlords had rallied considerably since the first thrust, and while the skies were still contested it was clear who was winning, and it was not the forces of democracy. Ivan sat down on a crate of ammunition, wondering why it was there until he looked down at it, 5.56 Californian imprinted on the side and he gave a bitter laugh at the thought that they'd brought a single case of the wrong bullets with them. Around him the rear echelon units of General Laberenz's 5th Army were entrenching, thousands of hands moving as one digging trenches which were followed swiftly by fencing postings wherein chainlink fencing was run between them and then electrified across an area roughly two miles squared as a Californian measured things. Guard towers and check points in the two north-south cardinal directions served as gates. Roving bands of men patrolled, much like Ivan's squad would've been doing, if they had still been alive.

The Private himself was lucky enough not to be caught in the explosion that had rendered his unit non-existent which was what had led to his simple hanging about. An Eslovakian plane had bombed their supply convoy nicely and reduced man and metal to burning heaps of goo and scrap. The offender himself had been shot down a second too late by a passing MiG-29, though the pilot ejected. Whether he was captured or not Ivan didn't know, he had been too busy looking for anyone still alive.

"Oy, you." He looked up from his melancholy. "Sir?" A young man about 23 or 24 stood in front of him with lieutenant's bars on his shoulder. "What unit are you with?"

"None, sir. The 212 Logistical Command Squad got bombed to shit. I'm the only one left." Zelenko said plainly, he could've used a few more minutes before someone found him.

"You hurt?"

"I'm slightly deaf in my right ear at the moment, it'll wear off in due course." The Private replied sarcastically which caused the LT to frown.

"Come with me, we'll find something for you to do with your ass."

"Sir." The private replied as he gathered what was left of his kit, his rucksack and been peppered with shrapnel while he was praying to the Almighty not to die and that effectively left him with his rifle and a canteen, the water bladder had likewise been destroyed by flying bits of metal. If he never saw another Eslovakian in life again, it would've been far too soon.

The Lieutenant walked him across the base to the "command center", a glorified tent really, where he handed him over to the Quartermaster who gave him the dubious honor of handling supply movement and refueling for the 12th Mechanized Regiment from Stanislava's mechanized army. He almost wished he was still dealing with that sharpshooter that his platoon had never found prior to being eviscerated, but if this was his war, he wasn't going to complain, not getting shot at was a hell of a lot better than getting shot at.

The State of Ruthenia
Poltava - May 9th 2025

In the ensuing hours of the steamrolling that was the invasion of Pripyat, General Laberenz's lowest point was simply that the Pripyatis did not roll over and die, not that he realistically expected them to, though he had to admit to himself on the inside that it would've been nice had they just capitulated. Stanislava's troops were moving forward without difficulty he noted going over the digital map before him, provided in real time via a complicated array of sensors aboard the advancing forces as well as aerial UAVs and composite satellite imagery, though that last one was only so useful due to the speed of which the satellites orbited the planet. His own forces were moving with similar speed, they aimed to end this war quickly, before the Vikings could bring their forces to bare, if Eslovakia had to fight for Pripyat they would've been less willing to try and liberate the land no matter the PR value to the Pripyati-Ruthenians. Eslovakian mothers wouldn't let their sons die for some foreigners they'd never met, at least that was the general hope once Pripyat was completely overrun.

The southern front around Skyvra had given up without a fight, in the case of that single city. Luhansk had been encircled and was under siege while further south everyone with a brain avoided Chernobyl like it was made of death, which it was. A third of his personal forces were slugging it out on the outskirts of Severnaya, he made note to shift more units to that area with impunity, if the third largest city in Pripyat could fall swiftly then it was a literal clear walk to Pripyat City. Yalta in the far south was being pounded by the 5th Artillery Division under the direction of a colonel whose name he was forgetting, while in the north it had been the reverse. Kremenchuk and Chernivtsi were closer to the shoreline and where Eslovakia's naval presence was in Pripyat based out of Odessa.

The Eslovakians peppered the advancing forces up there with naval munitions and of course, Army Air Station Irene was there, the beating heart of Pripyat, General Pylyp Kohut of the 7th Army had made it his priority to knock Irene out as soon as possible but it had been proving difficult, as the center of force concentration in Pripyat two full Eslovakian divisions sat in that base, complete with all the high technology approach of the Eslovakian army, artillery ranging from cannon and howitzer down to mortars harassed Kohut's advancing line while aerial forces bombed their rear with impunity. Panzarvagn 2's met the aging T-80Us of the Ruthenian Army blow for blow and knocked more than than the Ruthenians did, to the annoyance of the high command in general.

Laberenz frowned considerably, plotting his moves out in his head, considering the sheer density of his own forces over that of his enemy's at the moment before he guided two divisions towards Severnaya in support of the vanguard of the 5th Army, the 129th Guards Tank Regiment. While he desired to order Irene and Pripyat City bombed, the intact aerial defense network of the enemy side halted any such notion until the Eslovakians were dealt with promptly.

Ruthenian Aircraft Carrier Kyiv
Kiev-class Aircraft Carrier
Iron Sea - May 9th, 2025

Admiral Yosyp Wasylyshyn's 2nd Fleet was of the two operational "fleets" of the Ruthenian Navy, the more modern of the two. While his flag flew on the Kyiv his formation was made up of six Udaloy II-class guided missile destroyers, seven of the navy's Krivak-class frigates, 20 Tarantul-class Corvettes, 6 Project 945-class submarines and one of the navy's two most impressive vessels, the Kirov-class cruiser Admiral Lazarev. This obese flotilla which was trimmed down as needed was currently well off the Ruthenian-Pripyati Coast, while the 1st Fleet stuck closer to Ruthenia in order to keep the waters safe from the eventuality of Eslovakian intervention in the war. The Second Fleet under Admiral Wasylyshyn had a simple enough job, contain the Eslovakian fleet at Odessa, and be prepared to deal with the inbound Eslovakian fleets from Eslovakia itself.

Combat air patrol in ancient Yak-141 VTOL aircraft was above his fleet, he secretly desired a proper aircraft carrier but one, and the only one that the Ruthenians had ordered, was under construction in California, the Ruthenia would not be completed until 2027, though she had been ordered in 2020 when Skyfall had occurred the project had been side-lined by the F.S.C. who were both rebuilding and billing the rebuilding of the rest of the world.

"God preserve us." as the Admiral's only thought when it came down to it, he knew his men were well trained and supremely drilled, he also knew the same of his enemies.

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Severnaya Defensive Line
May 9th 2025 - 00:00 Hours | Midnight
Corporal Leonid Kozel

For over a decade when it came to the nights, the Ruthenian steppe was utterly devoid of nearly all light, with the exception of fire and moonlight. It was an odd sight to many, the hazy lines in the distance that were the spires of cities rising from the earth, lit up for the first time in a generation. The nearest hazy line to Corporal Kozel was not hazy, the buildings of Severnaya were clearly defined against the backdrop of the man-made light and the blackness of the early spring night. They were only five miles outside of the city, in what the Californians would call the suburbs where the first defensive line of Severnaya had been set up. The Blue Star was doing what they could to evacuate the city of civilians as quickly as possible while the Pripyati Defense Force was trying to assemble a force of parity in the face of the Ruthenian 5th Army, a force of nearly half a million by itself that was augmented by even more. Sandbags lined streets, machine gun nests, sniper roots and anti-tank missile pits had been set up everywhere, vehicle and men moved with a speed that was nearly inhuman and somehow in the middle of all the chaos, no one screwed up, because they couldn't afford to screw up partly and also because they'd trained and trained for the day this would come, everyone knew their job, period.

Corporal Kozel brought his crew's Panzavagn 1 to a halt next to a line of sandbags that were manned on either side, a shallow ditch was behind the bags that almost resembled a trench from the Great War, it was narrow enough that the tank stretched across the breadth of it without issue and was little more than something to duck into when the bullets started flying. A machine gun squad of two men manned a Californian made M2 Browning, several heavy boxes of ammunition were down in the ditch all of them marked 12x99mm in Ruthenian, Eslovakian and Californian Britannic. On their other side there were a brace of rockets for the Birkanian made RPG-7, they ranged from older rockets that wouldn't do much to anything to newer and much rarer V9 rockets that still posed a threat to the armored units constructed before Skyfall. The launchers, two of them, were held by terrified looking young men in Pripyati fatigues.

The situation was familiar up and down the line that stretched for nearly ten miles in this one area before breaking to allow unit maneuvering before reconstituting to begin encircling the city. Berdiansk to the northwest was similarly being dug in around, the Ruthenians wouldn't be able to leave them open while they advanced so the Pripyati and Eslovakian high commands were reinforcing both positions as best as realistically possible while also attempting to not neglect the rest of the country. Ternopil, which sat directly on the border had gone black almost immediately, while the cities of Skvyra and Luhansk had surrendered without a shot fired to invading forces. Something about artillery came out of Yalta but not much more, while the northern cities and DLFOR Irene had repulsed several attempts by the Fascists to take ground there.

"Button up." Lieutenant Olsson ordered as he closed the hatch above him, the others following suit where necessary. "Load." The Lieutenant was remarkably calm for the chaos around them but really he had to be, the officers couldn't afford to fall apart or the men who looked to them for direction would likewise be disheartened. There were a short series of loud clanks as the 120mm gun was loaded, as ammunition belts were checked on machine guns and so on. Down the line the situation was again similar as they readied themselves. On the black horizon away from the cities the barely visible bulbous figures of the 129th Guards Tank Regiment of the Ruthenian Army had moved forward to speadhead the advance of the Ruthenians 5th Army. "Hold." Olsson adjusted targeting data and made quick calculations. "Hold." The Ruths were fifteen hundred yards away. "Hold." At that point everyone sucked in a breath.

"Fire!" Down the line there was an eruption of fire from the Panzarvagn 1's, several impacted down range with their targets, while some shots glanced off others penetrated the Ruthenian armor, this did not deter them however, even as the Pripyatis readied and fired again the Ruthenians responded by returning fire. A rolling blanket of artillery fire started in on their line, which was answered by more distant counter-battery fire. In the air above JAS-39's tangled with Ruthenian Mikoyans and Sukhois, preventing the line from being bombed. "Fire at will!" came over the radio, the gunner didn't need to be reminded by Olsson before the 120mm fired again.

This repeated down their line as the Ruthenians closed, small arms fire joined the tanks as men moved up between them, BTRs spewing their infantry squads on the field as the Ruths advanced, RPG fire joined the tanks when they had closed enough, heavy machine guns rattled. Against the back drop of the night the tracer rounds firing from both sides with the nearly harmonic explosions erupting all around could have evoked images of the Apocalypse, but that had already happened. A steady chant rose up as the fighting continued past a few mere seconds, "Severnaya preserves!" the Eslovakian officers who didn't speak Ruthenian left thoroughly befuddled at the statement.

"Armor, advance!" A rolling barrage of heavy artillery and mortar fire came from the Ruthenian's own lines for once as the armored spear head of the 3rd and 5th Armored Regiments began advancing, their tanks engines kicking to life, spewing black smoke across the sky to join the white smoke trails of rockets, missiles and expended munitions. As they rolled forward they fired again, the Ruths responding blow for blow and proving right all those theories from the old Cold War that eastern or western, the tanks were roughly equal. Infantry surged up behind the Ruth tanks and were met with a hailstorm of .50 BMG from the entrenchments, or from the heavy and medium machine guns aboard the advancing tanks, leaving many of them scythed down like wheat in a field. The advance halted after several hundred yards and across the distance it became a slugging match. Pripyat had proven quite definitively, it would not go quietly into the long night.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Severnaya, Pripyat | 00:20 Hours
Ruthenian 5th Army | 129th Guards Tank Regiment

For fifteen of the longest minutes possibly imaginable the Pripyatis held their ground against one of the most elite formations in the Ruthenian Army. They traded blow for blow against Ruthenia's T84BM 'Oplot' tanks, launching all manner of rocket, grenade and shell down range to where their enemy crawled forward. Ultimately however it had not mattered. They had fought hard, with valor and courage and it did not mean anything for they lacked the most simple, necessary component of war; men with which to fight it. Twenty four Pripyati Panzarvagn 1's had rolled out to meet them, six of them had left the field under a barrage of mortar and rocket fire to cover their retreat. Smoke lingered on the field still, which had become almost silent, interspersed by the low rumbling of the engines of tanks that had halted more than two thousand yards from the edge of Severnaya's cityscape where the enemy had dug in during the precious moments bought for them by the blood of their armored corps. Sharpshooters littered the skyline as evidenced by the occasional crack of a singular gunshot seeking out a fleshing infantryman, sometimes they were lucky and the armor held, other times their were reduced to a broken collection of scarlet colored goo as medics scrambled to do all they could to assure their lives. Logistical vehicles dared to creep up behind the tanks, delivering much needed fuel and ammunition to the armored vehicles that had been expended during the previous battle. Armored personnel carriers crept forward as well, discharging infantry squads and retrieving the wounded for transport back to the rear lines. Men milled about with care, moving from shallow impression to shallow impression in the holes made by tank shells and mortar fire.

No one smoked against the black night, the single points of light among the gray haze of the fog of war would have sold them to Pripyati or Eslovak snipers, though more than one desired a much needed cigarette in order to calm his or her nerves. Others drank greedily of their water and more nibbled at chocolate bars, utilizing the sugars to offset the jitters caused by their adrenaline running down, all of them regardless were waiting. Each loathed the thought of the next advance into the avenues of the city before them, many had been veterans of the Civil War and the reconstruction and knew all too well that the brightly lit horizon represented little more than a death trap. For the moment, high command agreed with them, and there was no advance into the city, though all of them knew that would not last, units were still moving into position all around the city's three encircled flanks and units were moving to close that gap as soon as possible, a task proven difficult by the ever present Eslvoakian Air Force. For the moment everyone simply waited.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Ruthenian 5th Army - May 10th – 2025
00:20 Hours
Bvt. Corporal Ivan Zelenko
Forward Operating Base - 5KM inside Pripyati border via border posting 'Dane'

Newly minted Brevet Corporal Zelenko crept behind a stack of crates that were scattered around, many of them open revealing the supplies within that ranged from bandages and bullets to rations. The commander of the FOB had seen fit to battlefield promote him primarily for being the endling of his unit but also because he needed someone to legitimately give a set of hands to the Supply Sergeant who was overseeing the finalization of the paltry fortifications of the FOB. Zelenko himself had been overseeing the moving of supplies for the front line for hours, seeing that proper requisition forms were filled out in the procurement of everything from cough syrup to chocolate. It had slowed down for now, and if this was his war then he didn't mind it overly much, he'd been shot at, bombed and blown up enough for any number of lifetimes and was not desirous of rushing to the front any time soon, if he got lucky he would be attached to this unit and see out the remainder of the war from the, extremely relative, safety of the rear echelons. At the moment though as fatigue dragged at his bones and his eyes dropped and despite the very conscious knowledge that he was going to pay for this in the long wrong, he ducked behind a few of those crates and shut his eyes for a few, well earned, seconds.

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Severnaya Defensive Line
May 10th 2025 - 01:00 Hours
Corporal Leonid Kozel

They had fallen back with all the speed their tank could muster, under Kozel's less than careful direction the mad dash for the skyline in reverse had seen them alive while their brothers died. The infantrymen had fallen back or fallen in place. The 5th Armored was completely gone and the 8th Infantry was not doing much better. The man in overall charge, Lt. General Lars Tjäder had ordered a general fall back into the city, which was only 20% evacuated, people were terrified and not moving quickly enough despite the absolutely mad scramble they were making to escape. The PDF had wasted no time between the battle or the fallback however and roads were lined with roadblocks formed by sandbags, quick-crete fortifications, machine gun and anti-tank nests, sharpshooters dotted the skyline at various intervals, snipers even higher to grant them a clear view of the blue-black battlefield of the early morning.

Men moved in the shadow of the buildings with the same nearly insane quickness that others did, every plausible position was being used for defense, from the lowest to the highest. Mines littered the streets and a few enterprising explosives experts had turned a few cars into IEDs the likes of which not usually seen outside of Azhadstan or Africa. There was a tint of desperation in the air as Tjäder ordered any able bodied man capable and willing to bear arms to be armed and as a result Ak4 and Ak5's were being handed out to everyone from the fresh into manhood who looked barely able to sweat, to the very old who had seen more violence and war than any man should have and yet still had it in them to fight and man the walls.

From the north the 8th Eslovakian Armored Division, part of the 3rd Corps that was stationed in Pripyat as a garrison force, smashed through Ruthenian lines like they weren't even there and opening a corridor to the city before it could be properly besieged. The modern railgun equipped MBTs of the Eslovaks practically melted the Ruthenian T-84s like they were made of clay. A full infantry division of Eslovakian regulars spread out across the city and manned positions alongside the Pripyatis, no one bothered to think of the political ramifications that the Ruthenians screamed about in their propaganda, today the enemy of democracy was here and it didn't matter who was manning the walls, because Eslovakia had been right, the fascist horde was spreading, it had lost in Belkaland and had no intention of losing in Ukraine.

The Ruthenians advance had begun at 00:35 Hours, it was meant with an unceasing barrage of anti-tank fire, artillery fire and small arms fire as each became relevant. The Panzarvagn 1's of the PDF were joined by Panzarvagn 4's of Eslovakia, which cavitated Ruthenian armor as they advanced in a slugging match between one another. It did not stop the advance, artillery traded shots with one another, mortar fire rained down and the clatter of automatic fire was constant, in under eight minutes the Ruthenians made it to the first line of buildings in the city proper. In the winding twisting streets of the city, the Pripyatis and the Eslovaks had the advantage, no amount of numbers mattered when a force tried to take a city, the Imperials learned it in Port Aurick during the Belkan War, the Birkanians learned it during the Schayne Plains War in Bergenbel and the Californians had learned it in the Adrianic War during the battle for the Sunese Home Islands, in a modern fortress, which a city essentially was, all advantage was given to the defenders.

Cries up and down the lines were all variations of the same words, stand and fight, defend the line etc. The joint force had dug in and would not easily be driven out.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Severnaya, Pripyat | 01:00 Hours
Ruthenian 5th Army | 129th Guards Tank Regiment
Captain Anzhela Belyakova

"Reverse! Reverse!" The T-84 lurched harshly to a stop before it began clanking backwards as quickly as its driver could manage, the facade of a building fell on them judging by the sudden clanging of heavy rock against the hull and the periscope going dark for a moment. The multi-ton armored vehicle was around a corner after a few sparse seconds, in the next second a sheaf of super heated air turned plasma shot passed them at more than thrice the speed of sound. "Vikings, huh?" The gunner smugly remarked. No one answered, his wit and humor were usually appreciated by the crew of the Kiev Express but not today. "At least they gave us ETC before sending us up against god's own armored brigade." The man continued, motioning to the mounting of the 125mm electrothermal main gun of the tank that had been part of the post-Skyfall upgrade package.

"Shut up, Vasily." The commander, Captain Anzhela Belyakova said bluntly. She was scanning the outside world via the periscope, the tank could only look in so many directions but opening the hatches in urban combat was as tantamount to suicide as staying in one place for too long. The 129th had already lost a brace of six tanks in the initial thrust, two from tank fire, one from mass rocket fire and three from cars that had violently exploded after being packed with explosives.

"Orlov, take us backwards, he's coming up." They could hear that much, no tank could sneak, rubber or steel treads the massive things were simply too heavy to do so. The gears kicked to life and the Oplot showed its weight as one of the fastest MBTs on the planet still and skidded backwards down the street. "Turn right." They did so, sliding however tightly into an alley way halfway, the forward bustle and cannon of the tank sticking out. "Load." Vasily engaged the autoloader, cursed when the piece of shi---machinery proved to have broken and loaded the 125mm shell by hand.

"Make your Peace with God, gentlemen." The Panzar IV's turret swiveled around the corner where they'd been, a sheath of super heated air zipped passed them again. She pressed a button silently releasing a sabot round from the main gun. The active defense system on the Panzar went into action and the round was deflected. "Reverse!" The Oplot skidded backwards once again, the buildings around it unable to withstand the girth of the tank as it traveled ended up collapsing as the armored vehicle plowed through their supporting outer walls. Vasily didn't need to be told to reload the cannon again, he'd done so.

They spilled out into another street, a sudden and unwelcome guest of an ensuing firefight between two platoons of Ruthenian and Pripyati soldiers, the remote control heavy machine gun was put to work supporting their comrades for a few seconds before the turret swiveled in the direction of the building they were holed up in. It didn't fire, a sabot round was useless against fortifications and they had more pressing concerns. They backed out of the avenue between the two opposing forces and released a brace of smoke grenades for the benefit of both themselves and their advancing compatriots who'd been inspired by their appearance. Their own quarry however had yet to be completed so as to not endanger their fellow Ruthenians anymore than they already were they stalked passed them from the direction they'd came from.

"Stay ready, Orlov." The driver didn't need to be told twice but he nodded all the same. They rounded the corner from the rear, a mistake but one they didn't have a choice in owing to the combat ongoing in front of them. The Eslovakian tank was nowhere to be seen...

Pripyatan Airspace
01:00 Hours | Suvorov-2000M 'Korona'
Lieutenant Colonel Olexiy Pasternak

In the initial hours of the war the Ruthenian Air Force had made headway into Pripyat's airspace with no small amount of struggle. Eslovakian fighters from across the country and as far away as Eslovakia itself scrambled into Pripyatan airspace. The light fighters of the garrison force in Pripyat were limited primarily to the JAS-39 models of aircraft, including the infamous 'Stealth Gripen' JAS-39X. While Eslovakian aircraft sortieing from the Eslovakian mainland in the north included among others the K-41 Natteravn, an Eslovakian domestic stealth air superiority fighter that was easily a match to the Californian made F-22A Raptor or other similar models and generations of aircraft such as the Birkanian made Su-2000 Korona that Lt. Colonel Olexiy Pasternak was piloting through the black early morning air of the Pripyati Republic. The Commonwealth of Birkaine was not keen on sharing their crowning achievement even with their allies in Ruthenia, at the end of negotiations they had agreed to supply a mere thirty of the aircraft to supplement the Ruthenians conventional inventory of Sukhoi and Mikoyan aircraft, of course with the fall of Birkaine that had been amended.

The night was no more quiet in the air than it had been on the ground so far. Sonic booms interspersed the sky every few seconds as jets sortied in and out of combat zones, alarms screeched in the ears of pilots on both sides of the conflict. Missile trails streaked across the sky scarring the inky blackness with stark gray-white. Col. Pasternak had lost half of his flight so far after the ground-strike craft fell back when the air became too contested for them to continue safely they'd been replaced by MiG-29 and MiG-35 in the air superiority role. Both capable aircraft who had scored victories against light Gripen fighters and in a few instances the heavier Natteravn. The Colonel himself had returned to the airspace after returning to base for refueling and rest before rejoining the fight. The controls of the plane around him were as smooth as glass and the engines were powerful enough to justify using the plane in place of the An-V-21 that the government in Kiev had developed a love for, though it was primarily meant to tangle with other AS fighters in a dog-fighting role.

His plane pitched right with a motion of his hand, his wingman, also in an Su-2000 following suit some yards behind him. Well behind them were a mixed flight of Su-24 and Su-25 attack craft that were moving forward to try and relieve the ground forces a bit as they slugged it out in the winding pathways and avenues of Severnaya. Though they couldn't hear it in the distance a fireball flashed across the sky, another plane, foe or otherwise going down. In the next several minutes it became an utter clusterfuck. The 2000's banked hard left after radar contacts came screaming in splitting their ear drums, the CAS craft made for the deck before applying afterburners if they had them to get the hell out of dodge if they could, many didn't.

Parachutes erupted across the sky along side SAR beacons as several of the attack craft were downed, their escort swinging back around to better ascertain the situation. Faint radar signatures appearing on their own radar arrays, amplified by a distant AN-100 AWACS. Aside from a few basic orders there was silence between the three pilots, one lower than the usual FSAF flight of four but when you only had thirty planes you had to modify a little. With a practiced hand the Ruthenian pilots directed their planes in the direction of their low-observability adversaries. Seconds passed at the longest before missile locks shrilled in their cockpits again, the Ruthenians undertaking deft aerial maneuvering releasing chaff and flares as they did so, the missiles spinning off into oblivion. It had quickly become a very deadly dance as the Korona pilots shot forward again after correcting their aircraft.

They zipped passed the Eslovakian flight of K-42 Natteravn's forcing their quarry to break off from their attack on the retreating ground attack craft and pursue them careful to maintain that they were not out of range of their AWACS craft. Now that the craft were in close proximity to one another relatively speaking the stealth of their aircraft mattered far less than the individual skill of the pilots. Pasternak rolled his aircraft to the left as his warning systems went off again signalling another missile lock on his plane. Thinking quickly he forced the nose of his plane downward which forced the aircraft on to its back before he committed to a half loop, leveling out at a lower altitude to disengage the Eslovakian plane for the moment. One of his wingmen uttered a cry of victory over the radio, shooting down one of the Eslovakians and decreasing their number to three, making the fight more even now, bitterly however seconds later their other wingman ejected, canopy exploding with his seat shooting away before a missile slammed into his plane. A duo of parachutes joined the others headed towards the ground as the Colonel forced his plane hard to the right, the on board systems in conjunction with his electronic support working to gain a missile lock on one of the K-42's, a second later he released one of the Korona's Vympel R-27 air-to-air missiles. The Eslovakian broke off, releasing his own chaff and flares as Pasternak followed after him, waiting several seconds for another missile lock before firing another missile, a more advanced Vympel R-77 which shot forward before impacting the Eslovakian fighter several seconds later.

Now down to two K-42s the Colonel re-positioned his aircraft to assist his remaining wingman, gaining a missile lock on another of the Eslovakian planes and releasing another R-27 the missile missed but forced the Viking to break from his pursuit of Pasternak's wingman, who released a missile of his own which impacted the other K-42, this prompted the final Eslovakian pilot to break from combat, performing a Split-S of his own and applying afterburner to quickly leave the combat area. In no fit condition to follow the Eslovakian and low on fuel and ammunition the Ruthenian pilots left the field themselves, two of the ten kills necessary to gain Ace status under each of their belts.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Ruthenian 5th Army - May 10th – 2025
01:20 Hours
Bvt. Corporal Ivan Zelenko
Forward Operating Base - 5KM inside Pripyati border via border posting 'Dane'

Brevet Corporal Zelenko had woken from his nap thankfully uncaught be his superiors before he extracted himself from the supplies he'd hidden himself among and returned to the 'main' staging area for the FOB. There were a collection of logistical vehicles gathered, surrounded by men who were lading them down with proper supplies for the front lines, most, Ivan noted, seemed to be medical supplies. He found a stack of requisition forms properly filled out on top of a crate with a sticky note stuck to the top one 'Welcome to the 212, don't sleep against the MRE's it smashes them flat and they suck enough already'. He laughed but nodded, going over the paperwork for his own records and glad to see they were filled out correctly. If this was his war, he was happy enough with it.

Autumn 2023 - Nicolae Dumitrescu is re-elected to a second term in the office of Prime Minister. Tensions between Mennova and Eslovakia continue to rise.

Spring 2025 - As war breaks out along the Ruthenian-Pripyati border, tensions reach an all time high between Mennova and Eslovakia.

April 2025 - The Mennovans prepare for war.

To no one's surprise, following their earlier intretigence, the Eslovaks declared an unjust war on the Ruthenians. Clearly, the Eslovaks intend to gain more territory from the Rusyns. But our brave brothers in arms will not be intimidated. They stand vigilant along the Pripyati border, their resolve unquenchible, and ready to help our Rusyn brothers...

"It was inevitable... Our Rusyn brothers were being oppressed and we just couldn't stand aside and let it happen. We were like a coiled spring, ready to throw ourselves into the fray; all we waited for was one word: "Attack!" Spirits were high and the troops joked about how we would crush the Rusyns that remained loyal to the Eslovaks with one fell stroke. But the older officers didn't laugh. They witnessed the Mennovan Civil War... They knew war."
- Journal entry by Lt. Alexej Sykora, Free Mennovan Army - 2nd Army - 14th Mechanized Division, just prior to the Mennovans taking part in the Ruthenian-Pripyat War on the side of the Ruthenians, May 2025

9 May 2025 - 0403 Hours
Lt. Alica Láska

A small group of Voron commandos approach a pair of patrolling Eslovak soldiers in a small forest. The two Nordic soldiers are completely oblivious to their stalkers. Then without warning, the Voron commandos slit the enemy soldiers' throats from behind and stab them to make sure the Nords are dead and continue on their reconnaissance mission.

For Listening

"Lieutenant Láska. Your squad is to make a forward recon of- Wait... Stand by for the Colonel."

A moment of silence followed, Alica and the other commandos in the squad realizing that something big was going on. As they were wondering what's happening, the voice of their commander, Colonel Oldrich Ungur bellowed quietly on the radio.

"Lieutenant, this is Colonel Ungur, call sign 'Vlk-1'. There will be no more reconnaissance. You are to execute Plan Rianske. The air defenses must be destroyed before the main assault begins." Alica and the rest of her squad continue toward their newly assigned objective, realizing that the Mennovans will be entering the war on the side of the Ruthenians very soon. "Your objective is to destroy two anti-air emplacements. Weapons are free and we are now at war. Good luck, Lieutenant. 'Vlk-1' out."

The Voron commandos await Alica's order to advance, "We are to enter the Zelenko Army Base. We will start by clearing the entrance and neutralizing the guard tower. Be ready to move on my command." Alica instructed to the rest of her squad just before ordering, "Move out." As they approached the base, the Voron commandos fired their noise suppresed AK-12s at the guard tower. Upon neutralizing the guard tower and nearby patrol with deadly accuracy, the commandos proceeded into the base. "Base entrance entrance cleared. Proceeding to the first AA emplacement." Alica informed the Colonel on the secure radio link. "'Vlk-1' to Lieutenant Láska. The first AA emplacement is located to the southwest. Move swiftly."

Approaching the first SAM emplacement, Alica fired her noise suppressed AK-12 at a nearby guard. Upon arriving at the emplacement, they began to place explosives on the SAM site in a very well hidden place. Once done, Alica reported to the Colonel, "Explosives set. Proceeding to the second target."

While en route to the second emplacement, the commandos took out another guard tower; upon approach, they took out three more guards. "Guards neutralized." Reaching the second target, Alica placed the explosives; once again, the explosives were well hidden; before reporting back to Col. Ungur. "Second emplacement is primed for demolition. Moving to the next emplacement."

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Severnaya
May 10th 2025 - 01:25 Hours
Corporal Leonid Kozel

"Brace for impact, firing for effect." The garbled voice on the radio said from somewhere more distant into the city's skyline that blazed with fire and the symphony of war. The air screeched ungodly sounds in the next few seconds, the sounds inhuman and nearly ethereal, the air glowed hot from the plasma state forced on it as the super-sonic shells passed through it, slicing through the friction like a knife. The detonations fell two hundred yards away in an area that used to be commercial-residential. The symphony's notes were added to, screams of pain, terror and agony rose up from the area that was struck alongside the sound of buildings crumbling and fires burning. The artillery strike had the desired effect, the Ruthenians halted their advance for the moment, the distant booms of counter-battery fire added their own note to the song.

"Enemy armor at twelve o'clock, two hundred meters!" The Panzarvagn I shuddered as its cannon discharged down range to a Ruthenian T-84, the round glanced off the explosive-reactive armor of the other vehicle, the cells discharging and destroying the round. "Reload! Reverse!" Kozel engaged the gearbox of the tank and the tank rumbled backwards as the gun was reloaded. "Halt!" They stopped moving immediately, fighting in a straight line was suicidal nearly but it was necessary, and under the intense barrage of rocket, small arms and machine gun fire the Ruthenians didn't counter-fire with anything except their own armor. The Panzar I shuddered again as once more its cannon discharged, the 120mm HEAT shell impacting against the distant T-84's frontal armor. The Ruthenian tank was wreathed in smoke and fire, but the bark of it's 125mm cannon answered the question of was it dead or not, that answer being 'not'.

The ETC shell slammed against the Panzar I's own ERA, the cells of the defensive implement exploding outward and neutralizing the shell's impact, though the kinetic energy from the strike and subsequent explosion quite literally forced the Pripyati tank back several feet. The gears of the treads ground in protest before they relented with a sharp metallic snap, the right-hand track falling away snapped. "Fire again!" LT, Olsson bellowed, the tank's cannon erupting in flame as it ejected another HEAT round down range, a brace of anti-tank rockets joined it, fired by an antitank squad supporting the defensive position they were manning. The Oplot fell silent in the next second, fire erupting from holes that swept clean through the Cold War tank. "Sergeant." Olsson was on the shortband with the infantrymen outside the tank. A garbled "Sir?" responded.

"How badly damaged are we?" The Lieutenant asked, precious time was being wasted but the information was necessary.

"Your right track is completely snapped off, it could be repaired in field sir but it won't hold for battle it doesn't look like." Olsson cursed softly in his native language.

"Thanks, Sergeant." There was a curt response before silence fell again on the shortband. "Alright, let's get out and fix it." He finally said, Kozel sucked in a breath before he opened his hatch and winced. The most immediate thing was what he heard, screaming, explosions and the rattle of guns, he saw fire, the skyline was alight with flame, the skyscrapers consumed by it, on the streets there was rubble from collapses but all that was secondary to the broken and battered bodies of men, women and children. It filled him with a quiet rage as he clambered out of the Panzar I, the LT retrieved a toolbox and they set to work with a spot welder and quickly and dirtily fixed the track on their tank, it wouldn't hold through battle, that much was evident with the crude welding that was more like soddering. "For our sake that'd better hold." Kozel said simply as they climbed back into the tank and buttoned the hatches once more. "Alright, Corporal, back us up easy, then we'll make for the vehicle depot on the north side of the city."

"Yes, sir."

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
May 10th, 2025 - Severnaya - Western District
01:30 Hours
Corporal Maria Jozić, Pripyati Defense Force
Border Patrol Unit 37

It had been an impossibly long day for Maria Jozic and her unit of light riflemen as they'd evacuated the border to the Ruthenians. Sporadic fighting had occurred the entire way as they essentially ran away from the enemy whose numbers increased with each passing yielded mile it felt like. The sky was filled with streams of white smoke at first as planes dueled far above, the incessant screeching of weapons systems likewise had not ceased. They'd been lucky so far, everyone was still alive but no one realistically expected that to last forever, or even through the night. They had been deployed in the western district of the city along with the 12th Infantry Regiment, fresh from the north they were alert and awake while the 37th BPU were trying simply not to collapse at this point. They manned machine gun emplacements and snipers dotted the skyline.

Pvt. Viktor Kozel had his M239 propped up against some rubble that used to be part of a store front while LT Eriksson was further back from them in the backyard of what used to likewise be a shop. Owing to the residential nature of the western districts the skyline was low enough to set them up 'close by' for direct fire support. The 12th's Pbv 302's provided a very light definition of armored support for the position with their 20mm cannons but the majority of anti-tank fire was to come from Vasliy Company's anti-tank platoon equipped with AT4's and RPG-29s. As with elsewhere the sounds of war were everywhere, explosions, screaming and the rattle of gunfire conjoined with rocket and artillery fire.

"I wish that were a target, it'd be a nice landmark to aim at." Kozel whispered hoarsely, referring to one of the Scars, gigantic rocks that jutted up from the ground, a remnant of the Proteus Event, Skyfall from years before. Distant barely visible shapes milled about in its shadow, seemingly infinite and limitless. "Fuck my life..." The Private muttered taking in the immensity of their enemy's force.

"At least you still have yours." Maria said plainly as she stared down the CS red dot sight atop her rifle, 'requisitioned' from a fallen comrade hours before when they were still at the outer defensive line. She released a breath and pulled the trigger, a single round finding mark on a 'distant' Ruthenian soldier who crumpled to the ground in a shower of red mist, fairly impressive for the 5.56C round. Somewhere in the back of her mind it occurred to her that she'd just killed a man, in the present however she didn't care. What disturbed her instead was the enemy's relentless advance. It didn't seem to matter how many mortar shells dropped down on them, or how many times they were bombarded with artillery or small arms fire, they just kept coming as though they were as mindless as Imperials, though unlike those murdering bastards they didn't take as many casualties thanks to actual tactics beyond 'charge'.

"Here they come in earnest." Viktor said mostly to himself as he let a stream of MG fire loose down the road, he was joined in seconds by another machine gunner and several riflemen. Above them were methodical cracks of more powerful semi-automatic and bolt action rifles. Wordlessly bayonets had been fitted hours before, just in case, for now though the enemy was distant enough to not worry. 'Distant', anyway, 300 meters.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
May 10th, 2025 - Zelenko Army Base
04:05 Hours

What the Pripyati Defense Forces regarded as an army base many other nations would have regarded as a forward operating base, albeit a well protected one. Small or not however Zelenko Army Base like the rest of the Republic of Pripyat was on high alert. Klaxons were blaring and men were milling about with purpose in the lower thousands, uniformly Rusyn for a change there were no Eslovakians present on PDF bases, mostly for propaganda purposes but also for the practical fact that the Eslovakian garrison simply didn't have enough officers to babysit every Pripyati emplacement of their own. When a perimeter patrol didn't report in, the base instantly entered lockdown with the same professionalism that any 'proper' armed force would. The milling men became roving squads armed and primed to engage foreign threats, or if need be, domestic ones. While unaware of the charges planted so far it was not hard for one squad to follow the trail of bodies left by the Mennovans straight to them, a quiet radio call resulted in no less than a platoon of Pripyati soldiers surrounding an anti-aircraft emplacement on the edge of the base. "Attention; Enemy infiltrators; this is Major Alexander Petrov, throw down your weapons, reveal yourselves and surrender, you are surrounded and outnumbered, do not waste your lives on delusions of grandeur! You have five seconds!"

Free Mennovan Army - Voron Special Forces
Federal Republic of Pripyat - Zelenko Army Base
9 May 2025 - 0417 Hours
Lt. Alica Láska

Hearing the klaxon blare, Alica and the rest of the Voron commandos scattered and went into hiding; some of them hiding in empty barrels; others hiding in other places to ambush the PDF. "Attention; Enemy infiltrators; this is Major Alexander Petrov, throw down your weapons, reveal yourselves and surrender, you are surrounded and outnumbered, do not waste your lives on delusions of grandeur! You have five seconds!" the radio call bellowed quietly, to which Alica replied quietly in her hiding place, "How original." Waiting for the PDF guards to walk into the commandos' killing zone, Alica throws a smoke grenade and turns on her night vision goggles. Once the smoke started gathering, the killing began.

The Mennovans fire their noise suppressed AK-12s with the intent to pick off the PDF guards one at a time, starting with their immediate highest ranking guard. Their intent now was to sow confusion and panic. They each aim for the PDF guards' heads, and pull their respective triggers.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Severnaya, Pripyat | 01:30 Hours
Ruthenian 5th Army | 129th Guards Tank Regiment
Captain Anzhela Belyakova

"We're out of shells, Captain." Vasily said he loaded the last one into the bustle. The majority had been expended on buildings comparative to the amount of enemy armor they'd knocked out. If they were fighter pilots they'd have been double aces. The T-84 started forward through the shattered bones of what used to be a building of some sort, a storefront or a house they weren't sure. The machine gun was likewise running low, "We withdraw after this." Belyakova said. "Ma'am." The other two members of the three man crew responded. They rounded a corner with a rumble, supporting infantrymen moved along their flanks. Mortar shells screamed in occasionally in advance of their movements, artillery counter-battery fire filled the air with distant hollow booms. The broken facades and apparently unending scattered bodies both of vehicles and men were not so dissimilar to the Siege of Patronovsk during the Schayne Plains War and in testament to the steady advance of the technology of killing, while that siege had taken over two years to break, Severnaya's grapple had only been ongoing for hours and the conditions were already similar.

"By Klava, what the fuck is that..?" Belyakova uttered primarily to herself as they came to settle in the middle of the avenue. It was downrange by perhaps 900 meters, low sitting and bulbous it wasn't quite a tank. "Fuck, back up! Back up!" The shell propelled to supersonic speeds cut through the T-84 scant seconds later, if there were more ammunition in it it would have possibly cooked off, instead it sat there silent, fire shooting from either end like a gout.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
Severnaya, Pripyat | 01:30 Hours
Ruthenian 5th Army | 551st Guards Infantry Division
Private Olena Holub

Still alive, still alive, the words played over again in her head as the woman ran for it. What had once been the 3rd Squadron of the 8th Platoon had been reduced to nothing in the span of about ten seconds. They'd walked into a building to secure it. Judging by the furniture it had been someone's house, disturbingly intact considering the raging war. Then all hell broke loose. The mine leaped up into the center of the first room like a rabbit out of a hole and exploded with a fury. Those who were killed immediately were the lucky ones, reduced to a finely ground puddle of what used to be a man. The ones who didn't die immediately were reduced to gibbering wrecks that also used to be a man before they in a period of seconds to a swift minute bled to death from the innumerable puncture wounds, not to mention the pressure blast from the explosion itself.

Olena Holub had still been outside the house, though the explosion had shaken the walls of the building and the ensuing collapse had sent her sprawling into the street. About twenty seconds after that an Eslo-Pripyati section came rushing around the corner to respond to what had in obvious hindsight now, been one of their many traps sprinkled throughout the city. Rounds skipped off the pavement and asphalt the caliber difference of the 5.56 and 7.62 being evident in the cracks given off by whoever fired their rifle. Still alive repeated in her head again as she dove behind a pile of rubble that used to be another building that by the way it was splayed out across half a city block she guessed had gotten hit by heavy mortar fire. Thinking quickly she raised her rifle over the rubble and fired off a wild stream of ammunition, there was no aim to it and the only tell that she'd hit anything had been a cry of pain. Olena released the lock on her rifle's magazine and moved as quickly as possible with shaking hands to replace it, slamming it into place before she pulled a grenade from her belt with her now spare hand. Yanking the pin she chucked it in an arc over the rubble and into the street, huddling down into the rubble further before the sound of an explosion joined the air. Several cries rang out next, calls for medical officers in Ruthenian and something in Eslovak she didn't recognize but from the sound of it was someone crying for their mother.

She dug her heels in and sprang up a second later when her enemies were still reeling from her assault and tore down the broken street back towards where she hoped was friendly lines as quickly as her feet could take her.

The State of Ruthenia
Poltava - May 10th 2025
01:30 Hours

"Do you feel like someone out of the Great War yet, my friend?" The call was on a secured digital line that beamed directly back to Kiev, on the other end of course was General Mark Valshannar, whose grim sharply defined face was on a crystal-liquid screen a few feet away from General Laberenz as he went over motions in his head and again on the area maps before him, currently he was zoomed into Severnaya, one of Pripyat's larger cities via way of battlefield cameras carried on vehicles, on helmets etc. "There is a certain callous grimness to the endeavor, sir. However we advance well with little in the way of delays. I expect this will change soon. How are things on the homefront?" The Belkan man said as he continued to mind his maps and troops movements, the other officer hardly minded, it was bad enough he was calling for a status report so soon into the campaigns but he had his reasons.

"The Blue House has already declared a state of war." Valshannar said curtly. "Naturally, I have reciprocated despite the stress in our declaration delivered to the Executive House in Pripyat was that this was an internal matter. The Navy is en route to block the Eslovakian Navy, I have the utmost in them." Not exactly a lie but not the truth either. "Home forces have been put on heightened alert, any Eslovakian flagged vessel or plane is considered hostile. Just like that we are at war with a so-called superpower." The ancient Ruthenian continued.

"And the League?" Laberenz questioned without looking up.

"We must resolve this matter quickly and with decisiveness. There is little in the way of doubt that they will rally their forces and be here soon. I suspect with a good guess we have about a month, General." The dictator of Ruthenia said with the same curtness.

"I make no promises, war is far too chaotic for such a juvenile thing." Laberenz said just as curtly. Mark shrugged visibly on camera.

"I do not have unrealistic expectations, my friend. Whatever resources you require that do not detract from the homefront will be allocated with expediency. We must take ground quickly, foreign mothers are far less likely to let their governments have their sons die for equally foreign lands." Mark said with a plainness before the feed cut abruptly, discontinued.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
May 10th, 2025 - Severnaya - Western District
02:00 Hours
Corporal Maria Jozić, Pripyati Defense Force
Border Patrol Unit 37

"Get down!" Someone yelled two seconds before the first shell impacted, the next second the grapple began again, the Ruthies had been kind enough to give them thirty minutes to dig in at least. It meant nothing as the Ruthenians surged forward again. Assault and sniper rifles barked, machine guns sent out streams of white hot metal, mortars landed so close to the Pripyati Line it may as well have been on top of them. Ruthenian tanks bellowed, shells knocked out the armored personnel carriers with laughable ease, then..? "Fix bayonets!" Maria felt her blood run cold at those two words from her Eslovakian officer. Sivgard Eriksson was less than a dozen yards away from her at that point, service side-arm barking at every Ruthenian who came over the berm of rubble and instant-crete that formed the defensive line that the light infantry of BPU-37 were manning.

She never realized how short he was in that moment when the blonde Norseman seemed absolutely gigantic, unerringly calm despite the carnage all around him. The junior NCO turned senior had no more time to ponder such things however as she brought up her rifle in a snap, literally beating off an armored Ruthenian before driving the bayonet attached to the rifle into his throat. She had a creeping suspicion as she watched fascinated and horrified as the man gurgled on his own blood as he died; if she wasn't dead before the dawn shone, she'd be very good at killing, it was a thought that unsettled her more than a little as the soldier backpeddled along with several of the men around her, only to be halted by the points of bayonets behind them, confirming they'd reached the second line, and there was no retreat beyond that point that didn't end with a bullet, how like the Birkanian Union, the thought occurred. The second line, along with what remained of the first, put up further resistance as heavier artillery, howitzers and heavy mortars, began to howl and land among the advancing Ruthenians.

Then suddenly it became very quiet. The Ruthenians retreated in good order, even while harassed, retrieving their wounded who could be saved and those who could not accepted it quietly, the dead on both sides littered the street in the ensuing silence. No artillery rang out again, no sounds of planes or attack helicopters played across the air, it became thick, prophetic almost in its nature as the very air became heavy with trepidation and anticipation. "What the fuck is that!?" A voice sounded out simultaneously with the loudest most inhuman sound Maria had ever heard in her life, all consuming, bellowing and sounding almost like thunder, but so much louder and worse. Then, she knew nothing.

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Severnaya
May 10th 2025
02:00 Hours
Corporal Leonid Kozel

The northern half of Severnaya was open still, manned by rigorously paranoia Pripyatan and Eslovakian defenders a combination of trench lines and more fluid defenses ringed the entire area, crossfire zones consumed the ground as the approach to the city from either flank was one gigantic killing field. Ideally, anyway. Instead the roads leading out of the city were clogged to the point of stopped, overflowing with a steady stream of terrified people who were running for their lives, carrying little to nothing none were foolish enough to try and pack anything more than perhaps one change of clothing, if that. It was also where the PDF and the Eslovakians had set up a Forward Operating Base, where Leonid Kozel found himself standing alongside his tank as it underwent repairs beyond the level of which the crew was capable of in the field. "How far away is the Eslovakian Army?" He idly asked his commanding officer, LT Olsson shrugged with honesty.

"Your guess is as good as mine, Leo." It was an affectionate diminutive, Leonid hated it as much as Birkanian Muslims hated being called Isha.

"Think we can win?" The Corporal finally said after a stiff moment, the Lieutenant again shrugged.

"Maybe we can bleed them enough for the regular Eslovakian army to get here, but if you're asking if I think can we win in field? Not really, it's not that we don't lack the zeal, we lack the men and the equipment. The PDF is too damn small to be anything more than a police force." Olsson wasn't wrong, but it hurt to say it, it admitted to the truth that Pripyat was not really sovereign.

"Fair enough, sir." Leonid finally said after another moment.

"You're not a bad sort, Leo, we live through this, you get my recommendation for advancement to sergeant." Olsson said offhandledly as a ground tech came up to him and reported that the tracks on the Panzar I had been repaired and reinforced, the ammunition count replenished and the gas tanks refilled, all very good things. "Looks like we're back in the wa---" Olsson stopped speaking as the ground started shaking more violently than anything either man had ever felt before in life, it was an earthquake, but not a natural one, Pripyat was not along any fault lines. "What the fuck!?" Someone cried amid the sound of falling canisters, crates and boxes, pointing towards the western side of the city where a fireball had risen up in the most iconic, and dreaded, sign of warfare in human history.

"BUTTON UP!" Olsson bellowed as he clambered into the tank, the remainder of the crew did the same, sealing hatches and praying to whatever God they did, or didn't before that exact moment, believed in. "I cannot fucking believe that just happened." The Lieutenant said blatantly as Kozel brought the engines online and the tank began moving forward. "Now shit gets very real, gentlemen." The Eslovak said with a tone in his voice that was nothing short of a combination of blind terror, and loathing.

Ironically Fitting Theme

Ruthenian Aircraft Carrier Kyiv
Kiev-class Aircraft Carrier
Iron Sea - May 13, 2025
06:00 Hours
Admiral Yosyp Wasylyshyn

Trepidation danced in the Admiral's heart as he paced the deck of his ship, she as a fine ship, of this he had no doubt, strong and durable, well armed and with good pilots and seamen. But she was outmatched, out here, on the glistening blue of the Iron Sea, illuminated like steel in the dawn light, the sun rising for the new day. It was as beautiful as it was poetic as all around him, separated by many miles between them, the Ruthenian navy steamed northward with the best possible speed, that of their slowest ships, to engage in what would be the first naval battle that the navy had had in over two decades, and this time, they intended to win it, unlike what the Red Navy was incapable of doing against the Empire. A quiet sort of pride did swell in him to a small extent, knowing that the reinforced Kyiv, upgraded generously by their Birkanian cousins, could support more than the simple Yak-38 fighters originally purpose-built for what the Federated States Navy or Kaiserliche Marine would consider a light carrier. The admiral had absolute faith in his pilots to make up for any technical deficiencies however.

"Admiral!" A voice called out to him in the early morning deck, a scream owing to the noise of the flight deck. The aged man looked up and saw a midshipman, most likely running messages. "You're needed on the bridge, sir! The combat air patrol just made contact with the Eslovakians!" The old man's face betrayed nothing, he remained completely neutral and nodded before following the young man unnecessarily through the superstructure and to his own station before the younger buggered off to his own battlestation. The bridge was a stark thing, digitized during the extensively upgrades given to the carrier, it had much in common with its foe's more advanced Yekaterinburg-class carriers though it remained somewhat smaller even after her modifications in comparison to the giants of Eslovakia's navy, which of course had been unbashedly based on the giants of the Californian navy, not that that was a bad idea, the more distant RNS Ukrayina closer to Ruthenia at this point was also built along 'fleet carrier' lines.

The old man could almost feel the Red Army's Choir singing as the ship's flights of MiG-29K, Su-33 and Yak-141 fighter jets took off from the deck in successive order, all in the shadow of a modified Tupolev AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning & Control) aircraft that was providing electronic support to the smaller fighters. It was a very grand affair, a triumphant return to relevance after the many years of woe begotten unto the Ruthenian state and her peoples. "How far are we from the Eslovakian fleet?" He finally asked as he came to stand just behind the helmsman's station, there were no captain's chairs on Ruthenian vessels, they'd ripped them all out.

"Some hundreds of miles yet, sir, however our forward units should be making contact within the hour, we've scouted extensively and we're fairly sure of their location." The radar officer replied, the Admiral nodded slightly, that innate feeling of anxiety that all the Rutho-Birkanian peoples felt at a constant point in their lives was beginning to dissipate, home was where the war was. Radio silence to this point had been strictly enforced, only enough chatter to keep everyone coordinated, Admiral Wasylyshyn finally decided to break it, he gave no grand speech, but spoke a few lines. "Men and women of the Ruthenian Navy, we go into battle against the Norsemen, who force our countrymen into slavery and keep them entertained with the falsity of their so called state in Pripyat. We are currently moving towards their fast action response group, and if naval intelligence is correct, we are going against the most veteran ship in the Eslovakian Navy, the EAS Yekaterinburg and her escorts along with whatever assets of reinforcements they bring with them to the Ukraine. It is our sovereign duty to stop this enemy from going a single nautical mile further. God be willing, we will succeed, not through divine providence however, but, through your superior skills and the simple fortunes of war which favor us greatly. For the glory of our country, commence operations against the Eslovakians!" There were a few here-here's but nothing more than that, it was a somber business filled with waiting for those on the ships and in the planes alike.

Iron Sea - May 13, 2025
09:00 Hours
Captain Roman Lagunov

"Brace for impact!" Came the frantic cry of a younger man, most likely a midshipman, as the imposing Kirov-class vessel, one of the prides of the Ruthenian navy, tried to heave her lumbering body in a zig-zag formation not unlike that of the cruisers of the Soviet Navy during the days of the Cold War's Schayne Plains War. It was for naught, as streams of bullets from CIWS systems, close in missile batteries and vast amounts of chaff were shot skyward by both the Petrov and her escorts to confuse the incoming wave of Eslovakian missiles. The cruiser shuddered along her length when the impact finally came, the vast majority were dealt with, but no matter how tightly woven the net, a single mosquito always found its way in. "Fire control crews to deck eight!" An officer ordered hotly over the intraship radio. The floating death trap that was a Kirov-class cruiser caused more than a few moans among the crewmen for that alone, never mind the enemy!

"Return fire!" The Petrov's captain bellowed over the symphony that was collectively known as 'war', screaming men, alarms and computer beeps. The ship shuddered again along its length as the weapons officer confirmed the captain's orders, though this time in a very different way as fire erupted along the length of the vessel. The Kirov, fully outfitted with the newest missiles available in either Ruthenia or Birkaine, saturated the air with a vicious combination of long and short-range surface to air missiles, and all of these were a smoke screen for the bulbous and heavy figures of six of her eight granit anti-ship missiles were lobbed up, out and away towards the distant viking enemy. Though few had any disillusions about the heavy subsonic missiles making it through the plethora of anti-air defenses that were among the Eslovakian fleet.

"How long until we're capable of another wave!?" Captain Lagunov screamed over all the noise, outside, the chain guns and missile batteries for point-defense activated again as the second part of the Eslovakian wave came into range to be engaged.

"Five minutes!" The weapon's officer, Alexander Poroshenko, a Birkanian, said hotly as the ship shuddered again as a missile detonated entirely too close for their collective comfort.

'Outside', the naval battle was a stark contrast to the last engagement the Ruthenian Navy had so many years before against the big-gun battleships of the Imperial Estainian Navy. Aside from missile contrails across the sky and the roar of jet engines, where that was even applicable to be heard, the venerated Iron Sea was apparently empty, admist the streams of bullets and the lithe bodies of missiles, there were no visual sightings of the enemy's fleet, it was an entirely 'modern' engagement, something first laid down when the Mu-Californian Combined Fleet obliterated the Sunese Imperial Navy off the shores of Midpoint Island during the Adriannic War.

Ruthenian Submarine Novaya Birkania
(Victor) Project 671-class attack submarine
Iron Sea - May 13, 2025
10:00 Hours
Captain Ruslan Sewick

Silence. Nearly in totality there was complete silence aboard the Novaya Birkania, a 'Victor'-class submarine far ahead and out from the carrier-battlegroup of the Kyiv and much much further down below the surface of the ocean than submarines normally traversed at. Silent running in combination with the immense depth of their current operating status the Ruthenian commander, a young and rogueish man named Ruslan from Odessa, had a plan that the Birkanian and Ruthenian Unions had proposed as possible during the Cold War but had never had the opportunity to actually try. He sat there, with his SSN and a simple idea in his head, plotted out on tactical maps of the Iron Sea located in his vessel's equivalent of a combat information center (CiC). He was going to sit there and wait for the Eslovakian Navy to float by him, so far, after many close calls and cold sweats, it had worked. The first vessels, fellow, enemy, submariners through divine providence took no notice of them. The destroyers, frigates and two cruisers came next, it was remarkable how similar the fleet structures of the two nations were, these moments were far more tense, half-breaths and prayers to whatever God the crewmen happened to believe in until at long last, someone said it, after hours and hours.

"Sir... She's right above us." He could've died from a heart attack right then just because of the sound of the man's voice. Now, things got much harder.

"For the glory of our country..." Captain Sewick said very simply. The torpedoes, the most modern in Birkaine's inventory, had been preloaded and the tubes flooded before they started out from the fleet, they knew they were doomed, and that they only got one chance. "Torpedo room, make ready." The Captain ordered, they were making noise now, but it was too late for either party involved at this point. Steadily, slowly, the submarine began its ascent towards the appropriate depth.

"It has been an honor, my brave men. Fire when ready!" The submarine shook as the supercavitating torpedoes shot away from the submarine at fifty knots before igniting ramjet engines to engage speeds up to two hundred knots. Eight such torpedoes fired in braces of four in a span of twenty-one seconds erupted from the submarine ultimately, all of them headed towards their destiny with the Eslovakian aircraft carrier Yekaterinburg!

"Brace for impact!" Someone cried, and then, they knew nothing as the Eslovakian torpedo slammed into the submarine, and the Iron Sea tried to empty into the vessel.

The Federal Republic of Pripyat
June 9, 2025 - Pripyat City
02:00 Hours
Corporal Maria Jozić, Pripyati Defense Force

From her prone position on her back upon the medical cot she could hear its approach. The sound outside was one of impending disaster, the death of democracy was coming, heralded by the unceasing thunder of guns and there was nothing they could do to stop it! They had fought bitterly, making the Ruthies pay dearly for each step, but the flow of bodies and the string of defeats kept stacking up. The Might of Eslovakia was dealt a harsh blow in the early days, when a single Ruth submarine sank the Pride of Eslovakia, the ENS Yekaterinburg, rumor had it that her crew saluted the vessel as it sank. The ship had had her revenge though, even as the no less than six supercavitating torpedoes were sinking into her hull, her aircraft were sinking the RNS Kyiv and several of her escorts, though the heavy cruiser Admiral Petrov and its detachment had escaped relatively unscathed.

It was a hearty blow to make up for the calamity of the ground campaign, and the loss of the flagship of the Eslovakian Navy. Irene had fallen, the base commander fought to the last blonde Norseman to defend it. Now, the Eslovakian soldiers who remained in Pripyat were like their counterparts, without a point of strength and surrounded on all sides by enemies, as the traitorous Mennovans had crossed the borders only a scant few hours after the fighting began. The PDF, already unable to fight a single front war, was spread dangerously thin on two fronts that saw it encapsulated by enemies. Only one thing had been 'good', owing to the shared language of all three Ruthenian states, the Eslovaks had no problems going over Mennovan ORBATs and other intelligence gathered by the forces of MITHRIL among others. President Popov had begun breaking his own laws, declaring emergency conscription of every able-bodied man in the republic to sally to her defense, people were afraid it had come too late, or worse still that it simply wouldn't help. There were millions of Ruthenians and Mennovans, there were less than six million Pripyatis.

The air was palpable with a stink of defeat, or blood, she couldn't tell anymore, probably both. She wondered sometimes, if this was how the Belkans felt in Dinsmark all those years ago as from the single narrow window, and the shaking roof, she could hear and feel as the shells fell on their once beautiful city.

The larger-than-life Lieutenant Eriksson and herself were all that remained of their unit, he'd bodily pulled her from the wreckage of the defensive lines of Severnaya, obliterated by the horrendous power of that damnable weapon whose power she could still see in her dreams. He was not far away on a cot of his own, bandaged from bullet wounds that had finally taken him down outside of the town of Brovary about half-way between Severnaya and Pripyat City. Finally, amidst the low moans of pain, the screeches of jet engines and the thunder of the Ruthenian artillery she asked a question.

"If we live through this, can you take me back to Eslovakia with you?" It hung in the air for a moment, but the tall Nord obviously heard her as he shifted with a groan of his own, coming to a sitting position, something immensely difficult for him at the moment.

"Yes." The LT said simply as he lit a cigarette, the nurses had long since tired of trying to stop him or anyone who did the foul thing.

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Pripyat City
June 9, 2025
02:00 Hours
Sergeant Leonid Kozel

At this point, newly minted Sergeant Kozel, was almost certain that God Almighty Himself really fucking hated him. In the days since the war began his unit had gone from being one of the most novice armored companies in the country to now being yes, the most veteran, but also the only. The six tanks of the 2nd Company of the 3rd Armored Regiment were all that remained of the PDF's native armored corps. The Eslovakians had fared better, but they hadn't many of their ominously powerful Panzar IV's in the country to begin with. Those that remained, like his unit here along the western face of the very heart of his nation, were spread across the defensive lines where they were spending endless hours cavitating the approaching forms of Ruthenian and Mennovan tanks ranging from the old T-85s of Ruthenia to the much newer and more competitive T-14s and T-195 Mennovan beasts.

Leonid's own tank shook down her length as the cannon fired for the most recent of innumerable times that day alone, it had been replaced twice since the war began, now there were no more replacements for it so when it went, if they weren't dead already, they'd be reduced to machine guns, and while there was plentiful ammunition for the heavy M2 Brownings, not much remained in the way of a strategic reserve for those either. The explosive-reactive armor had been replaced with its non-explosive cousin when it was quickly determined to be a detriment to the supporting infantry, though that word had to be used very loosely at this point. The President's order literally had PDF supply depots handing out rifles and ammunition to men, boys and old men who'd never handled a weapon before, which even in Ruthenia did exist. The bolster in manpower came at a cost of competency and even basic marksmanship leading to the wise decision that the militias should only be used to augment what professional forces remained.

"We live through this, I swear to God, I'm moving to California." The voice from the new loader/gunner, Corporal Jun Hu from Yalta came from the relative back of the vehicle's crew compartment.

"Here-here, Corporal." Lieutenant Olsson said in luke-warm agreement, everyone in the tank was sick of war quite thoroughly, and not many had the balls to attack places like Eslovakia or California, and live anyway. "For now though, let's concentrate on the here and the now." Kozel hated to admit it, but he was starting to like the giant Norseman, he actually looked out for them, albeit he was less warm after Severnaya and the Route at Brovary, everyone was. That terrible weapon the Ruthenians had kept screaming across the skies, it was harrowing and nerve wracking all at once, especially knowing there was nothing they could do about it.

"Armata, 300 meters down range, twelve o'clock, load!" The Lieutenant said suddenly, the constant reminder that they were outnumbered so extremely as to be fighting Imperials again. "Fire when ready!" The tank shook again, the ETC gun releasing its shell down range, the munition splashed against the frontal armor of a Mennovan T-14 Armata which didn't even slow down. "Fire again!" The process repeated, the tank suddenly lurching to a stop as fire bellowed from its innards, smugly, the LT merely smirked when a few of the crew managed to escape, on fire. A few bursts from Kozel's machine gun put them out of their misery, he didn't relish in it like some did though, as the fighting became increasingly more desperate, the noble defenders of the Republic, some of them anyway, were becoming more and more like their Soviet counterparts from many, many years before during the Schayne Plains War.

"What the hell is that sound?" Olsson said quietly, the fighting hadn't died down, it simply outstripped all other sounds present on the battlefield. It wasn't the sound of the distant Ruthenian superweapon, either, the sky didn't scream. "Lads." The Lieutenant poked his head up out of the tank by maybe a quarter of an inch and wasn't immediately sniped, a good sign. "The Eslovakian Air Force has arrived!" He practically cried with joy, the multitude of lines before them were in retreat as above them without any semblance of mercy or compassion the Eslovakian pilots bombed with impunity. "Wait a minute..." The large Norseman caught barely a second's view of the roundel of one of the planes as it flew low, far too low and impacted the ground not far from the front lines, a chute dangled higher in the air than he could see. That wasn't the Eslovakian roundel, it wasn't even San Cristobellan or American...

"Well I'll be damned." There were Eslovakian fighters up there to be sure, the tank's radio squawked with Eslovakian, Rusyn, and was joined by Cristobellan, Sunese, American, Saracen, the Latin of Acrium, Britannic (both British and Daemyrtian) and Gorgashi as the Ruthenian lines receded into the distance, in the skies overhead the aerial battle reached a new level of intensity as Ruthie planes fell out of the sky. He recognized the sound now, it was panic. "So that's what an angel looks like." The Norseman lifted the command radio in the tank.

"DLFOR air forces, this is Lieutenant Stefan Olsson of the Eslovakian Army is there any air support assets that can be spared for the western quarter of Pripyat City?" He spoke in his native Eslovakian, the response came back in a thickly Cristobellan accented Eslovak

"Olsson, this is Che Santorez of the Cristobellan aircraft carrier San Cristobal reading you, roger on air support, mark your targets and we'll take care of them." Kozel could've cried at those words, in fact, he was pretty sure he was.

The Democratic League had finally come.

For listening to 1:20

Free Mennovan Air Force - 22nd Guards Air Division 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron "Akula"
Free Republic of Mennova - Galasa Air Base
9 June 2025 - 04:00 Hours
2nd Lt. Alžběta Vlasák

"This is General Vratislav Jelen, commander of all aerial forces in the Western Military District. Everything is proceeding according to plan on the front line. Our forces, in conjunction with our Ruthenian brothers, have made substantial efforts in gaining territory. But we must not waver. The Democratic League have already joined the conflict, sooner than we thought too." This revelation produced some murmors in the room. "Which is why we are bringing our new aircraft into front line service ahead of schedule. Your mission pilots, is to take your CFA-44 Nosferatus into the air on a combat air patrol over the front line. If any PDF fighters try to intercept you, your orders are to destroy them at any cost."

With that, the pilots stood and saluted General Jelen, and headed out to their planes. Among them is a headstrong pilot named 2nd Lt. Alžběta Vlasák. As she stepped out onto the apron, she saw her Kezmichal CFA-44S Nosferatu, hers, like the others, painted in a PAK-FA air superiority camouflage. The Nosferatu was designed as a successor to the older Mikoyan MiG-29SE 'Fulcrum-C' and Sukhoi Su-27 'Flanker' fighters in service since the 1980s. Everything about this plane shouted "new" and "high-tech" to her.

As she stepped into the cockpit and went through the checklist, Alžběta couldn't help but wonder how today's mission would go with this new machine. Upon starting her engines and taxiing out to the runway with the other members of the squadron; the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 22nd Guards Air Division.

"Galasa Towar, this is Akula Flight at Runway 18 Left. Ready for take-off." Alžběta's flight lead hailed the tower as she and said flight lead lined up on the runway. "This is Galasa Tower, you are cleared for take-off." The two fighters go into afterburner and take off, turning to the west to engage any PDF, or if possible, Democratic League, aircraft.

Pripyatan Airspace
June 9, 2025
04:00 Hours | Su-2000 Korona
Lieutenant Colonel Olexiy Pasternak

Alarms blared in Colonel Pasternak's ears as his Korona zipped across the skies of Pripyat. It had been going so well, Ruthenia's impending victory was but an arm's reach away from them when those damnable democrats and their incessant alliance had begun their counter-offensive. It had begun here, first, in the air. Spearheaded by Eslovakia's long-range fighters the K-41s plowed the road to make way for the less stealthy bodies of Cristobellan F/A-18 Hornets, Amerii Rafale's and the plethora of other jets flown by the Democratic League's International Allied Forces Fleet. He felt the G-forces pushing him further back in his seat as he sharply turned the Korona, yanking the nose of the plane up and instigating a so called high-g turn until the jet was on its 'belly' and he engaged the afterburners, jetting out of the most immediate airspace.

It was not a relief, and something out of his nightmares came up behind the Su-2000 even as he was already undertaking evasive maneuvers, it was terrifyingly close, a literal slogging dogfight the likes of which not seen since the Schayne Plains or the Talaman Civil War. What scared him though was not that, it was that his adversary was not in an Eslovakian K-41, but an F-25A Sea Raptor, and only two nations used that aircraft, and of the two, one was no longer among the legions of the republicans... "Oh dear Jesus." The Colonel whispered as a missile lock screamed in his ears and the Korona pitched downward though too late, the impact with the cloud of shrapnel as the missile exploded occurred, peppering his aircraft and he knew immediately by the lack of response in the stick that he was combat ineffective at best, going down at worst, which was confirmed scant seconds later as the plane suddenly, and violently, pitched downward at a sharp angle as the engines failed.

On instinct as readily as breathing he ejected, far above and over hostile territory.

Ruthenian Ship Ukrayina
Ulyanovsk-class Aircraft Carrier
Iron Sea - June 9, 2025
04:00 Hours
Admiral Radomir Petrov

Smoke filled the skies above the largest vessel in the Ruthenian navy. Streams of bullets flew with fury into missiles and other munitions fired from on high while far below the vessel her escorting submarines fought an even more deadly duel with a brace of the League's own submarines. Beyond the sight of the men aboard the Pride of Ruthenia, her escorts, the two immense Kirov-class battle-cruisers as well as numerous smaller vessels sent up waves of missile strikes against the League's distant planes and ships. The smaller sister ship of the sunken Kyiv, Kharkiv's taskgroup was guarding the 'flank' of the larger fleet carrier's taskgroup, the pilots and seaman of that vessel having one thing on their minds for the democrats they were arrayed against; revenge.

From his position on the bridge of the Ukrayina the Admiral of the Fleet of the Ruthenian State oversaw the affair. The collective might of so many nations forestalled by a single fleet, it was humbling in a way, as well as brash and worthy of smugness in another. Radomir Petrov however was not proud enough, not possessing of enough hubris, to proclaim anything before he was able to ascertain victory against the enemies of his people and nation. It was a grand affair, he decided as he stroked his salted and peppered beard thoughtfully as he overlooked tactical maps and went over things that were changing by the minutes, the seconds, with his bridge officers. Orders were given by those appropriate, he had no need to interfere except where necessary, which was not yet. His ship was in good hands, his men were the best there were, and as the battle was proving, they were the ones winning, though he knew that could change it did not seem likely at the present moment.

The Admiral never saw the Fasthawk cruise missile that killed him instantly, after it plummeted through the fleet's defensive screens, a lucky blow from the Cristobellan Destroyer Zacates as it plowed through the bridge of his vessel, incinerating him and a good deal of the flag officers in the formation. Owing to the clear lines of succession however, the flag command switched to the lighter Kharkiv

The State of Ruthenia
June 9, 2025 - Kiev
04:00 Hours
General Mark Valshannar

Things had moved faster than expected, he admitted that to no one but himself, of course. Yet, the angular momentum of the conflict had not yet turned against Ruthenia nor her forces. Most obviously, the naval battle ongoing as the supreme commander of the armed forces of Ruthenia paced his office in Kiev, was critical of the war. It would decide ultimately who controlled sea access to the Iron Sea, and the aerial corridors over Ruthenia's coasts. Information came in constantly as it became available, he was not President MacArthur of the F.S.C. who tried to micromanage the entire War in Viet Mai from his office on Bright Hill. Instead he ruminated, dark thoughts playing across his mind as he recalled the lawlessness of the civil war, and before that the tyranny of the Ruthenian Union, and worse, the Birkanian Union before that. He resolved, quietly, inwardly, that those days would never return. He was not Patronova, he was not her successors, he would not lose to these ragged democrats like they had lost to the Belkans, to the Imperials, he would not join the lists of history of the dictators who failed to provide his people with unity, strength and purpose.

No, General Mark Valshannar, The Savior of Minsk, would not allow himself, or his people to lose this war, it was integral to their survival as a nation, they had just escaped self-conflagration, he would not see them returned to that state, invaded, occupied, left to rot afterwards. A quasi-demonic smile played across his features, his dark eyes flashing with danger as the air outside screamed its inhuman sound as Sokil fired again, so distant, but still so loud such was the immensity of the weapon system. Finishing that weapon was the best decision he'd ever made as an administrator, not only did he win the public relations war by its abilities to blow Protean fragments out of the sky, it was the most devastating weapon in the world with the destruction of Excalibur and Stonehenge. Combined with his conventional forces, the Ruthenian State had no reason to lose... "I should really sleep." He muttered to himself after a long moment of his thoughts, it had been a couple of days since he had slept, waiting eagerly and with a touch of impatience to hear of Pripyat's capitulation as much of their country was overrun, though so far even with their setbacks both slaves and master fought exceptionally well, a fact he was loath to admit at all.

Ruthenian 4th Army | 14th Guards Infantry Division
June 9, 2025 - Brovary, Pripyat
Sergant Andrija Jozić

Digging in here, at Brovary, was actually mildly impossible owing to the impact crater caused by Sokil's giant shells, called Stauros had rendered the small city non-existent in a large extent. Damage was beyond considerably, most buildings were rubble, if there was even rubble left to be viewed. Yet enterprisingly enough, the army's engineers had managed to fortify what remained of the once prosperous township. Quickcrete emplacements, machine gun nests, SAM batteries deeper in, off for the moment, piles of rubble... It looked very much Patronvsk from the Schayne Plains War, a thought that was not lost on the Sergeant as he dared to smoke. The enemy were not advancing on land yet, the shattered Pripyati Defense Force was marshaling out of its capital, the Eslovakians were landing en force along the coast in various places, but for now, he was 'safe', or as safe as he could be in a war zone. Idly the late twenties man scratched a wiry blonde beard, not at all lost on the irony of the fact that he was an Eslo-Ruthenian with an Eslovak father he had actually been dumb enough to listen when the Savior of Minsk called out to all loyal Ruthenians to return to Rodina. The political officers never let him forget it either, looking over his shoulder, he was pretty sure at least one of the fresh-faced privates in his unit was one of them, the fucking GRU. Patronova would have been so proud of General Valshannar, though at least he didn't have them kidnap people in the night, as far as the Sergeant knew anyway.

Bitterly, as the grizzled soldier adjusted his ZHV-22 rifle; he found himself just wishing that his sister wasn't still in this godforsaken country, that through some miracle of God their father had had the decency to get her and his mother out. "Sergeant!" He would have jumped if he wasn't remarkably good at controlling himself. He turned to see one of his Privates, Juliya Sewick a thoroughly uninspiring woman in her early twenties; who was literally a national hero because her brother had managed to sink an Eslovakian ship of some renown, he was doubly as hard on her because of that.

"Do you intend to let us continue being bombed, sir? The men want to know." He sighed outwardly at that.

"If we turn on the S-300, we get bombed to shit even faster, private. So yes, we are going to continue to be bombed to shit. Until the VVS can get their heads out of their asses and actually fucking cover us. Understood?"

"Yessir." Sewick ran off before he could do more to her, it was a legitimate concern regardless, they'd enjoyed aerial superiority for so long they weren't used to being bombed anymore.

"God I just hope this debacle ends soon... With our victory, of course." He added quickly in cause there was a commissar nearby.

OOC: Short on purpose

Pripyati Defense Force - 3rd Armored Regiment
Pripyat City
June 9, 2025
05:00 Hours
Sergeant Leonid Kozel

There was another impregnation to the air as the Panzar 1 lurched forward under his by now nearly artistic touch. The tension was as overwhelming as it was 'quiet', the beaten and ragged Pripyatan Defense Force was for the first time since the beginning of the war, advancing. A thought not lost on anyone as the tired soldiers reformed their units in haste and drew up more reservists for the very first offensive by the PDF of the war, a two-pronged assault against the withdrawing Ruthenians and their Mennovan allies, both of which were currently feeling the immutable wrath of the Democratic League's finest pilots. Radio squawking further confirmed that the days of endless retreats were at an end as in the Crimean Peninsula the besieged Eslovakian forces there had been reinforced en masse and had broken out, mauling the Ruthenian army's containing unit there, while if the rumors were to be believed, the greater part of DLFOR was landing troops down the Pripyatan coast, and the Bear itself was landing men in Ruthenia after mauling their navy alongside San Cristobal, diverting a vast amount of Ruthenia's reinforcements to the front lines in Pripyat.

Leonid couldn't begin to imagine the sheer amount of noise outside of the tank, which was aside from the clanking of machinery, relatively quiet. Bombs and rockets exploded with a constant fury, planes fell from the sky and tanks exploded like they were made of petroleum and a match was held next to them. The Ruthenians were in full, but unfortunately organized retreat, while the Mennovans had dug in and formed a defensive line within Pripyat's hinterlands near their border, trying to preserve their territorial sovereignty when the inevitable came when Kiev had capitulated, though there were no signs of that yet. The war had only just begun.

Ruthenian 4th Army | 14th Guards Infantry Division
June 9, 2025 - Brovary, Pripyat
Sergant Andrija Jozić

Support soldiers it was said, were not meant to end up in direct combat with the enemy. Normally, this had some truth to it. Today, that was complete bullshit as another Eslovakian, or Ruthenian, it was genuinely hard to tell which, plane exploded violently overhead and careened downward in a cloud of flaming debris. Their S-300 battery was fully manned and operational on orders from those above them, the inherent danger of their position wasn't lost on the troop as the missile platform shook and smoke erupted as another missile jettisoned away and skyward, leaving the immediate area soaked in gray-white smoke. Whether a distant explosion was their work or not, the soldiers didn't particularly care, the sky was such a target rich environment they were already re-calibrating to fire again. On the ground, the sound of gunfire had become more pronounced as the Ruthenians halted their orderly retreat and to the dismay of their enemies they were neither broken nor routed.

Quickly the Ruthenians moved to set up a defensive ring around the former city of Brovary. The hollowed out landscape provided an oddly defensible position relative to the flat and rolling plains of the northern steppe that the Ruthenian States consumed, in addition to the remnants of buildings, the earthen embankments of various shell holes provided cover, however minimal, from enemy fire and it was from these alongside a combination of quickcrete fortifications that the Ruthenian army made its first stand in rather than advance in the war so far here in the center of Pripyat.

It was a scant few minutes that passed by before the battery loosed another missile from a different S-300 system that was about fifty yards away. That's when everything went to utter shit, "Incoming!" Sergeant Jozic heard it, processed it, looked for it and fell on his face the next second as his battery exploded violently behind him, shrapnel, white-hot and propelled around with deadly force scythed into several of the surrounding men and women with predictably deadly effect and he gave praise to God on High that he wasn't one of them in the back of his mind.

Thankfully the missiles themselves had been pulverized and thus were unable to explode themselves which would have added even more to the cloud of debris that settled quickly and was spread out for several hundred yards in every conceivable direction. Adrenaline running and his hands not quite shaking yet the sergeant pulled himself to his feet, remarkably unharmed considering the circumstances around him. His ears were ringing so terribly he was certain he was partially sure that he had been deafened, only for the symphony of war to rush back in after a moment of bleary eyed pained blinking. He felt hands on him, steadying him and sucked in a breath of smoke and haze, bringing him back to his full senses.

"Alright, sir?" A voice called out through the haze, he recognized it as one Private Sewick as the extremely level-headed woman ran down the lines not a second later, lifting and righting men were able, the voice of reason and comfort in this bloody place of the world. He turned to the right, facing in the direction she'd gone and watched as her head exploded. A red misty vapor formed a puff of cloud as the body fell, and then another, his own blood ran cold as on muscle memory the rifle on his shoulder was levied, he looked actively for threats, as did others by this point, it was for naught.

The sergeant was dismayed as his men fell like wheat to a scythe for a few seconds, and that was all they needed for the breach. Shapes at first out of the haze on the right flank, at the same time the firing on the lines in front of them, perhaps a mile, maybe more, grew in intensity as cannons and mortars barked, machine guns prattled and rifles clamored one and all for the blood of the enemies of the Rusyns. He felt the impact of the first round on his vest, his own, finally having a target that was semi-visible at the least, responded and down range something fell, he took to a knee and returned fire as best as he could, others did the same but it was clear who had won this battle as a grenade, likely launched from an under-barrel pattern like that Californian model, exploded with a fury against the side of what had been a supply truck carrying a rack of missiles for the defunct batteries and reduced it to slag, along with the men who'd been nearer to it with its explosion.

Ruthenian soldiers were the most veteran in the world, no one could doubt that, not even the ironclad discipline of the Roman Legion. In that moment though? They were running, the men who were not immediately killed by enemy fire or who did not make the stand against whatever spectre was haunting them simply broke and fled, these were the younger generation, the ones who'd not seen the most terrible days of The War, who had not seen the Savior of Minsk when he was nearly a broken man subsisting on canned bread before his miracle victory over the warlord Anton Yaroslavl had occurred. Then he felt the second round, and the third, the fourth, the vest gave by the third one and the last slammed into his upper chest, burying into his flesh in a flash of red. Then, the soldier no longer knew anything as blackness took him.

Ruthenian 4th Army | 14th Guards Infantry Division
June 9, 2025 - Brovary, Pripyat
Corporal Myronovych Tymoshenko

"Round up!" Private Yaroslav Yakovych bellowed from behind the broken autoloader of the T-84 Oplot as the tank's machine guns, along with the other munitions of the defensive line at Brovary, lit up the early morning air as the democrats advanced again. The metal beast shuddered as the main gun discharged, the round glancing off the nERA of its opponent, an Eslovakian Panzarvagn IV, who responded in kind with an electromagnetically propelled round of its own. The lance of death deflected, barely, off of the Oplot's own armor, the ERA cells detonating viciously, making the tankers inside glad the infantry wasn't near them but behind and away from them in a shattered line of buildings. Their commander, Colonel Ruslan Chernyak was already readjusting the targeting computers as Yakovych reloaded the gun with astonishing speed for a man fueled by adrenaline and fear. "Take us to the left!" The commander bellowed, Corporal Tymoshenko moved to obey, engaging the controls of the driving mechanism for the monstrous armored contraption that was outdated prior to Skyfall and now was facing one of the newest tanks on the planet. It lurched rather ungracefully but did as it was told just as the Panzar jettisoned another round, this one missing by the nearest fraction of a centimeter to slam into a building behind the tank, men bellowed and were suddenly silenced, buried by debris.

"Round up!" The Private yelled from below them, Colonel Chernyak fired again, the 125mm main gun discharging with a thunder. "Reload!" The man shouted with barely contained glee as the Panzar went up in flames, already he was aiming to another DLFOR vehicle when the university educated officer felt his blood run cold at the encircled star on the forward bustle of the next tank. "Jesus Christ." "Round up!" The tank discharged again, only for some invisible force of nature to scythe the round out of the air as the top of the enemy tank glimmered deceptively, an active protection system that protected against gunnery!? "Reload! Move, move goddammit move!"

Again the Oplot lurched forward, its powerful engine, one of the best in the world still, propelled the tank with astonishing speed out of the way of a crack that shattered the sound barrier and left a sheaf of plasma in its wake. The private again, more tiredly, repeated that the cannon was reloaded, without hesitation Ruslan fired again, the splash of fire against the side of the tank earning a yelp of joy from the senior tanker as again Yakovych moved once more to reload, it was tiring him quickly the size and weight of the shells but he could keep it up for a few more minutes.

The enemy tank was still moving when the private repeated his exclamation, the Colonel did not fire again before the 135mm electromagnetically propelled sabot lance cut through his tank like a hot knife cuts through icy butter, the shells in the ammunition compartment cooked off and exploded violently, but prior to that the turret exploded from overpressure, leaving the Oplot another burning ruin on the field.

Ruthenian Ship Kharkiv
Kiev-class Aircraft Carrier
Admiral Viktor Lysenko
June 9, 2025 - Iron Sea

"We're positive the Ukrayina is lost?" The voice of Admiral Viktor Lysenko had a way of cutting through the chaos of the ongoing situation in his CiC within the depths of the Kiev-class light carrier, now apparently one of Ruthenia's last remaining in the Ukrainian Fleet, though others of some renown and skill were available from the Birkanian fleets, which were making their way to the battlespace as they spoke.

"No, sir, we aren't, but we have confirmed that she took a direct hit from an anti-ship missile that has caused extensive damage to her superstructure. The last we heard she may be trying to withdraw."

"That will leave us exposed to the north." The Admiral said glumly, the other man to whom he was speaking nodded in silent agreement.

"This is folly, we cannot fight every naval power in the world." A lower officer said quietly, Lysenko stared at him for a moment and then shrugged, little more than that.

"Perhaps, but we will try. These democrats are weak, they are used to their comfort, their peace, we will outlast them." He had no idea that those words would one day become prophetic. "Besides, these are not all the powers of the world, these are northmen and drug lords, nothing more." Fair enough, now explain the burning supercarrier.

"We are aware of the location of our current flights?" Lysenko questioned, another man, Lieutenant Commander Stefan Kzlov nodded severely.

"We are sir, they are currently engaged with forward elements of the Eurasian Navy, our other flight, CAP, has reported also engaging Sea Raptors in Californian colors." That made more than a few go completely quiet.

F.S.S. Endeavor
Bernard Holloway-class Aircraft Carrier [CVN-87] | 9 June - 2025
04:00 Hours Local Time
Iron Sea - Democratic League International Allied Forces Fleet

'This is an Eslovakian initiative', Admiral Benson Hays of the Federated States Navy laughed derisively at the thought from his position within the CiC of the immense aircraft carrier Endeavor. The second of her name, the Endeavor was the direct successor to the first Californian nuclear fleet carrier, which had been retired and slotted for museum status prior to the Proteus Event. A member of the new Bernard Holloway-class carriers the 'Big E', carrying on the nickname of her predecessor, was one of the newest vessels in the Californian navy, launched in December of 2024 after Proteus, a testament to the might and wealth of California that even when she was ravaged, the Arsenal of Democracy remained ahead.

The Endeavor, and her escorts, a full carrier-battle group from the Federated States that filled California's obligations to the Democratic League was a harsh fact alone that was telling more to the shape that recent events had left nearly every nation in the world in, even the mighty and wealthy Californians now had to lean on and work with an intricate interwoven connection of allies, including their once former enemies of San Cristobal. That the Ruthenians could go to war now was perplexing to many in the civilian world, while so many nations were still devastated and rebuilding. God Herself had struck the world with Her righteous fury and now in the wake of that devastation there was, in addition to the winding down of the Imperial Civil War, one final conflict to fight for the Old World, to put one of the last tyrants to his grave. In the moment that the Light of Freedom was flickering, as the last forces of tyranny, left alone and largely unaffected by the untold devastation of the Proteus Event had struck out to conquer and enslave. Already they had annexed the great majority of former Birkaine in the immediate aftermath of the war, now the 'mighty' Ruthenian Union, reborn and forged in fire, was moving with expediency to reunify the last of its lost lands. At least, that was what the Ruthies thought was going to occur, the Democratic League however had one singular unified answer to such folly. "No."

Thunder sounded across the sky, distinct from the sounds of war as the sky began to darken just as the sun was set to rise in but another hour or two. Lightning streaked across in a multifaceted display of pure white light, the air itself burning in a spectacular way before the first drops of water began to fall from the heavens, thick and heavy at first before becoming smaller and smaller, a driving rain that fell without pity or remorse, heaven set itself to weep long and hard as distantly, well beyond the horizon and across the steel gray seas, the various aircraft of the DLFOR did battle against the Ruthenian Navy.

Streams of data were fed through a complex system of sensors from massive radars and sonars on the ships to their smaller equivalents in the various electronic support craft that loitered in flight in the wake of attack craft and fighters, back to a central hub aboard, in the case of the Californians and Eslovakians, their fleet carriers where they were melded together by supercomputers to form a battle management network from which the admirals of both fleets disseminated information to the less electronically integrated ships of nations such as the Boxer-class CVLs of San Cristobal or the Vietmaiese Petrya frigates. This in turn, while taking time, allowed each vessel in the disjointed multinational flotilla to act as one unit, with common direction.

Thanks to such interweaving, a Cristobellan destroyer of all things had managed to lob a fasthawk missile into a Ruthenian carrier at the very edge of its engagement abilities, a commendable effort to be sure, while Californian and Cristobellan aircraft worked to chip away at the carrier's flight wings. The aged Yak-141s and MiG-29Ks had yielded the skies after a prolonged period of firing back and forth beyond visual range, guided by AWACS units such as the Californian E-2 Hawkeye on the DLFOR side and the Yak-44 on the Ruthenian side of things. Dogfighting had occurred over the 'near' skies of the Eurasian carrier Fort Grace, ending in the Eurasians chasing off a flight of mixed MiG-29Ks and Su-33s with more than a few kills (and losses) of their own. All in all, the naval field was going well due to a combination of well drilled sailors and airmen, an interconnected force information center and in the case of the more veteran DL members, years of cross national training ops that had prepared them for such a day.

F.S.S. Amerigo
Nergal-class Ampibious Assault Ship [LHA-8] | 9 June - 2025
04:00 Hours Local Time
Iron Sea - Democratic League International Allied Forces Fleet

Lt. Colonel Richard Jones chewed a stick of gum with apprehension as he and his men awaited their hour. They comprised half of a Californian Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU, their other complimentary half was aboard a sister ship of theirs the Rhalesia, a fellow Nergal-class amphibious assault ship. Above them, though the vessel was insulated, they could hear the sounds of the battle that raged at sea, or at least the sounds of it at their end, the sound of planes landing, being refueled and sent back into the fight and the occasional engagement of the surface to air missile batteries or close-in weapons systems of the "miniature carrier" as civilians called the LHAs present in many modern naval forces.

Driving the enemy into a route was, in his opinion, unlikely. Likewise a retreat at this point was equally unlikely, they had just begun to bloody them, whereas the Eslovakians had landed in the north in Pripyat, the Californian, Cristobellan and Eurasian flotilla had another, more difficult in its way, job, to land in Ruthenia itself and relieve pressure on the Pripyati Defense Forces and the Eslovakian, Viet Maiese and Acric armies. The Daemyrtian flotilla, a smaller collection similar to the Cristobellans but far higher in quality of tech, was being held in reserve by the Eslovaks along with another Eslovakian fleet and army corps. For now, it was about waiting for the navy and marine pilots to do their job, smashing through the Ruthie navy and the VVS when they were close enough for them to come into play. Most importantly, as the Colonel and his men had been over every projected plan and landfall scenario, he turned his attention back to possibly the last game of five-card stud he'd have in a while.

Roger B. Inglebard Air Force Base - United States of Euro-Asia
03:00 Hours Local Time | June 9 - 2025
Federated States Air Force - 384th Air Expeditionary Wing
Captain Marcus 'Warlock' Lambert

The Ruthenians, as it was to be expected, had mobilized a large portion of their not inconsiderate military-industrial complex to this war with their neighbors, units from as far west as the Belkan border were either fighting in, or traveling to, Pripyat, to snuff out the PDF and the DLFOR and put an end to this thing, an independent and democratic Rusyn state. As they no doubt expected, the Democratic League would be doing the same, one such example being this, one of a few joint Usean-Californian air force bases in eastern Usea where the Federated States Air Force operated a flight of the venerable Rockwell B-1R 'Lancer' strategic bombers, built and designed to carry ordnance to anywhere in the former Birkanian Union, this 'new' Ruthenian Union was a suitable substitute for the exact same missions. Capable of carrying either nuclear or non-nuclear munitions the bombers of the 384th were armed to strike at ground targets along the Ruthenian coast in former Birkaine. A variety of ground-penetrating and submunition armed munitions had been loaded into each aircraft, a total of eighteen, to strike ports, rail hubs and motor ways to slow Ruthenia's ability to bring its reserves in Birkaine to bare in Ruthenia itself. The idea of bombing ships was ludicrous of course, the ocean was too vast and ships too swift, even the slow ones, to send out witch-hunts with heavy bombers. But a few of the bombers did carry air-to-surface anti-ship missiles just in the event that they ran across a ship still in port, or the Ruthenian navy's coastal defense vessels.

The final stages of pre-flight checks were being gone over by the flight crews of the lancers, men such as Honolulu native 30 year old Captain Marcus Lambert who were checking off repetitive and seemingly petty but entirely important measures before setting to take off on their missions to strike at the fascist menace, a shot that, if no one were lying about, California had geared towards for a long time coming, though they had been expecting to fight Birkaine, not Ruthenia. The 384th was due to be escorted by a joint Usean-Californian flight of fighters as far as was reasonable, as well.

The board that Ruthenia had set had its pieces in movement now, and only time would tell who was successful in this, the latest, conflict to scar the surface of Rostil.

EAS Fort Grace
Kinnear-class Aircraft Carrier [CV-12] | 9 June 2025
0400 Hours
Iron Sea - Democratic League International Allied Forces Fleet

'Dammit! There's no end to them!' While the GR-built JS-38C Ascender IIs of the Cocoon Squadron and F-22N Sea Raptors managed to chase off the most recent wave of MiG-29Ks and Su-33s, Rear Admiral Juozapas Simonis, in the radar room, was hearing of anti-ship missiles inbound. Thankfully, there were F-14E Ultra Tomcats already being launched to intercept them out at range. He knew that his airborne defences and the fleet's onboard defences won't be able to hold out much longer and that the aging Fort Grace would be fatally hit if this kept up. No... He had to keep up the pressure and make sure the Ruthenian airborne threats were kept well away from the DLFOR fleet.

EAS Fort Grace - #4 Catapult

Valerie and her RIO, 1st Lt. Hubert "Asteroid" Schröder, sat in their F-14E while they waited for take-off clearance. Then they heard the following: "Launch the Alert Five aircraft immediately!" And with that, their interceptor fighter was launched off the deck. The Ultra Tomcat formed up with three others and turned in the direction of the anti-ship missiles. They each get a lock, and fire their AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. "Fox Three! Fox Three!" As the heavy missiles dropped and fired off toward their targets, Hubert got a series of faint blips on his radar. That meant only one thing: Stealths. He informed Valerie, "Comet, we've got a problem here. We've got faint blips on the radar and they aren't ours." Valerie replied, "Alright Asteroid, we keep handling the missiles. You just let the rest of us know when they get a lock on us." before getting a lock, "Target lock! Fox Three!"

Just then, the missile alerts shrieked throughout Valerie and Hubert's headsets. The stealths had fired a missile at them. Dumping chaff and flares, they managed to confuse and lose the missile. They then got a visual: CFA-44 Nosferatus. The F-14Es enter into the merge and begin a classic dogfight.

The People's Frigate Dinh Tien Hoang
Iron Sea - June 9th, 2025
Democratic League International Allied Forces Fleet

The Gepard-class frigate had come at a time of much needed modernization in the Viet Maiese People's Navy, which had subsisted on old Soviet-Birkanian hulls since its foundation in the 1940s; when Birkaine, like Viet Mai, was a bulwark of the People's Revolution. During the 1970s civil war in Birkaine, Viet Mai had toyed with the idea of sending Patriotic Volunteers to assist their communist allies, but such a thing did not come to pass before the war had ended, and led to the Fall of Communism; an event that shook Viet Mai to its core. The economy was left shattered, and after the earlier resurgence of vile, reactionary monarchism in Zhong Wenming, Viet Mai was left politically isolated, separated from the Last Bulwarks by Zhong in the case of Ruthenia, which itself would fall to the vile Fascist Horde like Birkaine had, and first by Maha-Bhrata and then the Sand Sea from their Sieenese brothers. San Cristobal would fall to democratic bloodless revolution, and though they remained friendly to Viet Mai, mostly due to mutual (former) distrust in the Federated States the Viet Maiese could no longer count on them as a true ideological brother, which left Gorgashia, separated by sea and a disturbing closeness to the enemy that was the Californians. Finally, many Viets wept when Alisonia, the beacon of communism, the influence on all subsequent popular revolutions, had fallen to the reactionaries. This had led to a series of unpatriotic, otherthink, unsocialist reforms to bring the Viet Maiese state to a more viable form of economic prosperity so as to provide for the entire reason it existed, the People's benefit.

When the Democratic League formed in 2015, Viet Mai was interested, suffering from long years of political isolation and economic stagnation, and signed on a few years later in 2018. They were not the largest contributor to the organization, being surrounded by richer, vile capitalists, but they paid their dues both in money and as proven by the small Viet Maiese flotilla present off the coast of Pripyat, men. The Viet Maiese flotilla was closer to the Eslovakian formations who were off-loading men and materials to port cities of Odessa City and Kherson, where the Viet Maiese would be joining them with a force of two brigades, one from the People's Army of Viet Mai and the other from the People's Marines, all of whom were already under-way on leased Eslovakian transports, while the combat fleet of Viet Mai, consisting of the navy's six Gepard-class frigates, three Tarantul-class corvettes and a logistical train of again, leased Eslovakian vessels, ran screening and interdiction against the Ruthenian Navy. This was evidenced in the fact that the missile batteries of the Dinh Tien Hoang (named for an emperor of Viet Mai's old and superstitious days) were expended and for the foresseable future empty, leaving them in a situation that was comparable to uselessness with the ship's guns the remaining offensive weaponry which of course were useless in a modern battle, but made for decent close in defense weapons against the inevitable barrages of Ruthenian missiles.

Quietly, more than a few Viets wondered what would happen when their ground troops reached the shore and staging points to sally out and meet the enemy, as their AK-74M rifles and T-54/55 tanks were of the same factories as the weapons of the enemy, though the Ruthenians had advanced more steadily than their long lost South Tianxian former ideological brothers.

Navalis Sextus Rupilius Trajanus GR ACR DMO
A.R.S. Vindicta, Reprisal-class CVL
Iron Sea, in formation with DLFOR
June 9, 2025 - 1:39 pm

Despite the heavy armor, reinforced glass, and the buzz, yells and order being tossed around his bridge, Sextus still could hear the sounds of the raging battle outside, or well, as it slowly was being concluded. The remnants of the Ruthenian naval task force, fighting with the, in his opinion, overtly gigantic DL naval force that walked their land transports into the Odessa port and and now have turned their full attention to clearing the Iron Sea of hostiles.

Unlike what was stereotyped in the movies produced both domestically and aboard, he didn't command his entire battle group, or even his carrier, from a single chair. Rather, Sextus found himself towards the back of the elongated rectangular room, where there was tables of map boards, electronically lit display boards that portrayed the position of both friendly and hostile ships, planes and any other information that was tactically, or strategically, relevant.

His eyes were quickly strolling over the map board to the left that had three blue icons that were executing standard battle maneuvers, the three icons representing the three Narvik-class destroyers that were engrossed in swatting down air or naval launched anti-shipping missiles, and then firing back some of their own, formidable in their own right; the only reason the DL even held an upper hand was because of sheer numbers, and the fact that their integrated software across the dozens of platforms they all used really gave them an on the battlefield advantage.

He noticed his chief Signals officer monitoring the progress of two of the many ships under his purview, and sending signal traffic to one of the frigates "Lieutenant, update."

"Narviks are engaging in aerial umbrella operations and our Type 45's are moving into to close with Ruthenian vessels, I'm coordinating with callsigns Thunder 2 flight and Horse 5 flight to reinforce them, and also maneuvering our frigates into position to lay down cover for monitoring for submersible traffic or to aid in engagement. At best, 45's get a better AA shield while they close."

"Roger that, keep the Narviks close to us, I don't want to have to use our ordinance unless it's needed to be."

Sextus tried to ignore that despite the DL possessing overwhelming force in this theater, he already knew his anti-air defenses had been rolling off shots for hours now. He turned his attention towards another one of the comms officers who was furiously listening towards signal traffic.

"Ensign, what's the status of our birds?"

"Sir, CAG reports 25 in the air, they're currently supporting the suppression of remaining naval and air assets over the Iron Sea. We have a further five on standby should they be needed."

"Let's do that, send that Alert 5 in, and then have the next fifteen pilots get ready, we'll start relieving the planes that have been in the air the longest so we can get fresh birds and fresh pilots out there. This is going to be a long battle"

Milites Titus Mummius Murena
3rd Century, 7th Cohort, Legio Prythraei XXVIII
South of the city of Rivine, Pripyat
June 9, 2025 - 4:30 pm

The low sound of the engine on the large patrol vehicle idling was the most dominant sound, or atleast the one that Titus was selecting to not tune out too, though it was difficult even for him to eliminate the background sounds of the dozens of differing artillery systems, each side pounding the other, the screaming jets releasing their deadly ordinance or being blown out of the sky by an opposing airframe; or even the rumble of tanks, autocannons and small arms fire.

All of it wasn't foreign to him, he had been through hundreds of field exercises in his nine years with the Legion, yet this was the first time in war, and unlike his counterparts across the League armies now bearing down to save the withering Pripyat state; that did not bother him.

Titus and the rest of his contubernia, or squad as he had explained for the thousandth time to the ignorant DL forces, were gathered around the backside of their M20 patrol vehicle, a wooden crate approperiated from places unknown was being used to hold canteens and magazines as the men prepared for battle. Titus himself was pushing the brass colored 5.56mm rounds into the grey polymer magazine in his hand, a large ammo can open on the table with loose rounds that were being gathered. They had been informed by their Decanus, a man named Vuso, to expect orders by the end of the hour, so for the last half an hour they had prepared for battle. Refreshing magazines after their initial conflict with forces as they moved towards Rivine, breaking out of the now firmly held Odessan Peninsula,Titus and his comrades had their minds on preparing for the battle ahead, and keeping focus. No one mentioned how heavy their Pretal armor system was, as with the Level IV embedded protection and the shoulder pieces, extended arm and leg coverage it weighted approximately 15 more pounds then other conventional systems, combine this with the fact that each was equipped with a personal radio system, grenades, flares, basic medical supplies, food, maps, and other essential items as designated by the Legion, their overall capacity was in excess of what other DLFOR nations would consider viable, but unlike others, the Legion wasn't bred to produce Citizens who knew how to handle weapons or salute or drill; Titus, his comrades and every other one of the men and women in the Legions knew how to be incredibly masterful at a singular task; combat.

As Titus grabbed another smoke grenade, standard yellow color, and slipped it into a pouch on his belt that was designed to hold four of the long cylindrical smoke grenades, and then made sure that all six of his magazines were firmly secured in their pouches, his brain was suddenly put into alert mode as the earpiece in his helmet was activated as the voice of his Decanus came over the radio system "Alright men, new call sign, Junker 8, acknowledge over."

All of the eight men quickly replied with an "Acknowledge Junker 8-Actual", quickly finishing their resupplying efforts as they all knew that if a new callsign was being handed out, it meant a move out order was incoming within moments. The men closed up their cans of ammo and tossed them into the back of their Helvarg patrol vehicle and slowly began loading up into their vehicle, the driver restarting the engine and the assistant driver spinning around the remote-controlled turret, which was a tri-barrel gun. As Titus climbed into the back bench seats, he could hear Vuso as he spoke again on the radio "Alright pay attention all Junker elements, fresh wires incoming, over."

"Orders are as follows. We're going to proceed towards gridref 180905, moving east of Rivine. There is a settlement at 181542, which we will secure and set a perimeter around for use as a FOB. We are going to be doing this with the entire century, century command is callsign Arrow, over."

The men replied with their acknowledgements and with this the driver activated the drive system and began pulling the vehicle down the rocky road, joined in front and behind by a number of armored vehicles of all shapes and kinds, all belonging to the same Legion. Their orders were not only radioed via the radio, but also the the driver's tablet which was embedded into the dashboard, his first direction to head towards the COP site a few hundred meters down the road where the Decanus was, to retrieve him and then join in with the rest of III Century for the journey towards the town. The short trip would only take a few moments, as the M20's topped out at seventy miles an hour for speed usually, which the driver hit easily on the asphalt paved roads, and quickly the site of a few hastily erected pre-fabricated sites and signage, in various stages of construction/deconstruction, with the Decanus waiting on the side of the road in front of a truck that was being relieved of its ammunition cargo, and the driver slowed the patrol vehicle so the Decanus could climb into the door side seat on the left hand side.

Once inside, the soldiers went from empty stares to laying every eye and attention on him, as he pulled a tablet out of his carrier and began accessing it, pulling up the relevant battlespace on a real time feed, which was being gathered from a number of sources and composed by the Legion's command apparatus, and Vuso zoomed the display in to reveal the settlement he had mentioned, which was a mere 1.2 kilometers from the city. "Alright, UAV overflights do have civilians still inside the AO, so make sure we check our targets before we prosecute. Initial intelligence suggested a simple motorized squad or two, however we are now certain of a solid two companies of field infantry with possible mechanized or static support, and a possible armor contingency of unknown size."

"To this end, 3 Cohort is joining us in the assault with their some sixty Panzer's, so they will aid in the suppressment of any armored assets, and any potential fortifications. Our entry point will be along this path, and this route here, on the north end of the main road, while two other contubernia's are going on either side of the village in our attempt to squeeze them. We will dismount 300 meters from the initial contact point and truck the rest in, vicks will stay back and await potential radio calls for possible suppressment duties."

The men all nodded and began checking their weapons, or inserting a magazine if they already hadn't done so. The man sitting next to Titus, a shorter blonde-haired lad named Ameriu, was cycling his FSW-38A and chewing some gum, and briefly looked at Titus "Whatcha think Mum?"

Titus shrugged "Seems like a solid plan, but we'll need to move fast to entrench or risk being over-run from reinforcing elements from the city, since the brief didn't mention potential units there."

Ameriu nodded "Indeed. But those Panzers should be coming in from the curve of the road behind us, if they line up on the embankment of the road, their arc of fire will cover the entire village, even with the slim hulls on those T-models."

"Guess we're going to find out."

The entire century proceeded along the road, all embarked aboard the M20 Helvarg, with the front and back of the convoy being escorted by Panzer C's, who then split off at five hundred meters to go and positioned themselves in firing positions. Shortly enough, even over the roar of the engines, the sound of incoming artillery and tank cannons could be heard, and Vuso called out on the radio to ensure his men heard him "Stay alert, tanks are TIC at the settlement already. Ameriu, I want you on a swivel with that weapon once we're footbound."

As they reached their disembarkment point, the M20's wheeled off of the road and hedge boned in their formation, the drivers shutting off the engines but the battery was kept running as the guns on all the vehicles continued to scan the nearby lands. The troops disembarked from their vehicles and began trucking up the sides of the road in a column formation, slowly jogging as they rushed to get to the settlement. Titus and his contubernia found themselves towards the back of the right column, with the centurion leading at the front. Their pace increased as the sound of the combat grew closer, and suddenly the century wide comms net got louder, reporting contacts up front, the sounds of combat were now truly in full effect as Titus and his contubernia prepared to climb the final elevation crest and come into view of the settlement.

"Mum, Atroci, Ameriu go left, rest on me!"

They split out of their column formation and began flanking towards the opposite directions as the backsides of houses came into view, and Titus was both trying to absorb the new incoming terrain, and not become distracted by it. The road into town was a wide two lane road, with houses on either side, and approximately four hundred meters in a half roadblock had been set up, which is where most of the contact was coming from, either there or from occupied buildings. Most of the legionnaires were either prone on the grass, or taking up firing positions inside one of the buildings on the outskirts of the town. Titus and his contubernia however were flanking around the sides to try and find a good vantage point, clear an occupied house to gain new ground; they knew that two contubernias were also advancing on either side, and the sounds of their engagements could be heard as well, all blending into the roaring audiosphere around the many men, on both sides.

Titus's focus was scanning his entire field of view, the man called Atroci was taking point on their three man team and he was quickly leading them around the edges of buildings, each door and window being passed over with a muzzle and steady eyes before quickly moving on. Atroci called their group short as they passed their third building, a cluster of houses down an l-shaped road was ahead, and they had paused right before coming into view of them, on the backside of another house. Atroci motioned with his hands, indicating there was atleast three hostiles in the house ahead. He grabbed the handle on the grenade launcher which was attached as an underbarrel addition to his CR-8 rifle, and he quickly turned the corner and fired off a single forty millimeter round through the front door of the house; the door fragmented entirely and the explosion sent flames, body parts, dust and dirt flying through the windows and now empty door frame. They quickly entered through the door single column style, finding the shattered remains of the Ruthenian's all over the room, but they ignored them as they quickly moved towards the backside of the house, where windows faced the main road and further back into the town. Titus quickly set up on a window which faced the main road and through the sight on his rifle quickly found a house on the opposite side of the house where a Ruthenian was taking cover behind a garden wall, and he quickly sent four of his own rounds into the man's torso and head, not waiting to see the body spasm and collapse, but instead quickly moving his sight over to the roadblock, his finger changing his fire mode from single fire to semi-automatic, and began firing off rounds towards the dozen or so men hiding behind the stacked debris. His first four rounds exploded a man's head in a spray of red mist and sent three more to the ground, before Titus himself had do duck down, avoiding the smacking of the high caliber rounds that impacted with the concrete wall of the house. He could hear the rattle of Ameriu's LMG as his high caliber rounds easily penetrated through the makeshift fortification and Titus took a quick breath before he popped back up and retrained himself on a Ruthenian attempting to fall back, popping off four rounds into the man's back and legs, and then rolling to get out of cover as more rounds impacted into the side of the house or flew through the wall. He quickly slid his rifle out of the window and fired off the last five rounds of his magazine towards one of the few men still on the roadblock, and noticed the whole fortification suddenly transformed as two missiles from a handheld launcher from one of the legionaire's impacted on the debris. The moderate explosion sent out a large flash and broke up the entire fortification and Titus could see the legionaire's now pouring into the rest of the town, while right across the town one of the houses was vaporized as a Panzer, which had just climbed over the hill and into the battle, fired off a round at the defenders inside and remodeled into into a ruin with half a wall.

Titus moved from his previous position towards the back left corner of the house, where there was a back door, tossing his old mag on the group as he grabbed the rangerplate of another on his vest and rapidly reloaded his weapon, and having it re-steadied as he kicked open the back door and quickly gunned down a Ruthenian firing off from the house window right in front of him. Just as the first fell down, Titus had advanced forward towards the door, Atroci right behind him as he had noticed Titus's movement and they both quickly stacked up on the door before Atroci kicked it in and they both flipped the corners, clearing it just for a moment before two Ruthenians charged from the kitchen, the room being engulfed in a hail of gunfire before the Ruthenians fell. As Titus moved to clear the rest of the house, he noticed Atroci recovering from the floor "You okay?"

"Afirm, vest took it."

With his head blaring with a number of analysis's, proposed moves and him just trying to keep focus, Titus cleared off the sill of the kitchen sink, and smashed out the small window before he fired off a few rounds at a Ruthenian defender before he had to duck to avoid rounds. Just as he did however, a large explosion erupted throughout the battlescape, and then moments later, three more. Over his radio "Our fucking armor is down, we got a T-84, T-......."

The radio transmission was cut short and suddenly the whole house Titus was in shook and a swarm of dust blinded him before he could even process a thought. He coughed and waved his arms trying to clear the dust, turning on the kitchen sink for a second to clear off his combat goggles, and as his vision was restored he noticed the once intact house he had been in was now almost completely destroyed, the entry room and living room completely exposed to the open, revealing the Ruthenian T-84 sitting in the middle of the road, it's machine gun on top rattling off and it's main cannon slowly turning as it engaged something down the road. He got off of his ass and moved towards the half wall in front of him, propping his left shoulder against it as he slowly poked his head around the corner, observing Ruthenian soldiers surging forward with their tank, including two of them who were half inside of the ruined house and completely oblivious to Titus. He quickly raised his rifle and, with a flick setting his gun to auto, simply held the trigger down until they were on the floor motionless. He quickly surged forward, as he had been specifically elated with these two hostiles as one had been trucking an RPG carrier bag on his back, which is what he went for immediately, grateful blood didn't ruin warheads. He quickly let his rifle hang from the strap around his torso and picked up the launcher and three warheads, loading one up and popped off a round at the T-84, impacting on it's sideskirts and sending out explosions everywhere as the warhead and the reactive armor detonated. He wasted no time reloading a second warhead which blew a hole through the turret before he spent the third on a clump of Ruthenian forces further down the road, before he dropped the launcher and recovered himself towards the back wall, which was partially intact.

"Junker 8-Actual to Junker 8-3, sitrep over."

Titus quickly scanned his surroundings, and saw the body of Atroci half buried under some rubble. He moved towards the man and took a single dog tag and jammed the other in the man's mouth, before he replied to the radio call "Junker 8-Actual, Junker 8-3, Junker 8-2 is KIA, I lost 8-4 in the moveup. I'm in a half-collapsed house across from the burning Ruth MBT"

"Junker 8-3, Junker Actual, acknowledge. Fall back 100 meters and link up, over."

"Wilco, out."

Titus began moving through the rest of the rubble, making sure not to loose his footing and induce a foot injury and made his way back out onto the street, noticing the Legionnaire's surging forward, a Panzart IFV cruising down the road and slowly turning around the tank, it's main gun firing off rapidly. He found his Decio leaning against the wall of a building, the rest of his contubernia there, all on a single knee and nodding their heads as he approached, with Vuso speaking "Atroci, damn shame. That armor was apparently a outbreak of an armored engagement to the west, they took out a decent number of ours." jerking his thumb at the many smoke pillars to the left and to the burning wreck of a Panzer half on the road, on it's side.

"With this secured, we're going to move up to the edge of the town and hold our spots. Hopefully someone will bring us chow."

Sergant Andrija Jozić

"This one's dead, too. Do these morons all fight to the death like fucking Esties?" Andrija heard a voice above him say, distant and farther away than his rational mind was okay with admitting to. His surprise, besides that he was apparently dying, was that the language being spoken was Rusyn, Pripyatis were in the vanguard, that was in itself, troubling for other reasons. He did not dare to breathe, "No, idiot, this was the rearguard, the guys who died so the rest of them could run." In the even further distance, there was a sound not unlike thunder. Vaguely, Andrija was thankful for his heavy armor hiding the shallow, ragged breaths that were being drawn into his lungs shakily. Fuck it, he finally thought, better to be bayoneted than bleed to death, and he let out a long, agonized groan as he tried, unsuccessfully, to push himself up.

Immediately, Adrija was met with a boot to the chest that pushed him back down. "Stay down, or I finish what someone else started." The voice was cold, calculating and utterly serious, he opened his eyes blearily and was met by the visage of a boy, at best, tall but scrawny, wearing a kevlar vest much too large for him and holding a Kalashnikov rifle that looked horribly proportioned to the comparison of his body. "They're sending out the children now?" The Sergeant dared voice, the collected Pripyatis glared at him and gave no answer. "Medic!" Another of them, older, maybe nineteen and wearing a corporal's insignia, bellowed as the four of them, he noticed the other two after a moment of trying to collect his vision, leveled their rifles on him. Andrija gave an absurdly weak smile and drew a ragged battered filthy white cloth from his vest with great difficulty before a duo of men scrambled him onto a stretcher and carried him off, one of the many to be taken prisoner barely breathing, and like that, his part in the war was over. ...

Lieutenant Colonel Olexiy Pasternak

He'd scarcely breathed as the sun came over the horizon, the golden hue of the early morning illuminating the broken land beneath the sky. Lances of white smoke still scarred the clouds, lithe bodies of silver were still trading blows with increasing number and ferocity from both sides. From the silhouettes he could make out, Oleixy saw everything from Su-2000s and Su-49s to MiG-29s and Va-36s beating against a combination of, and he was presuming as he scurried under a disabled vehicle that was once a tank, F/N-22 'Sea Raptors' from the Usean navy, possibly the Californian one, he remembered reading an intelligence report that had covered the FSC joining the democrats shortly before planetfall. As well as sorted Eslovakian Griffons, Cristobellan Dassault models from the stone age of aviation, F-14's, F/A-18's etc ad nauseum but frankly he didn't care overly much about the men so far above him, and was more concerned with the ones he was surrounded by.

By his map, and the last news he'd had of advances and withdrawals, friendly lines were in either direction, Ruthenian or Mennovan, about two hundred kilometers away, give or take a few for his parachuting down. By his common sense, he knew it'd be hard going for more obvious reasons, as well. He was an enemy combatant deep behind enemy lines, lightly armed and unarmored, with only a day or two's worth of emergency supplies, not a condition to anything more than crawl along the ground like a rat in the mud. For now, he opted to sleep. The hard ground was a stark change from the slightly more comfortable cots he was used to, but it was a necessary risk lest he die of exhaustion, besides, moving during the day was probably an idiot move.

Iron Sea
3rd Fleet of the Ruthenian Navy
Troika-class Aircraft Carrier Admiral Yeltsin Danilovich
Admiral Vladimir Yermolayevich

Fifty-three year old Admiral of the Ruthenian Navy, formerly of the Birkanian Navy (though in his opinion only the name changed) Vladimir Yermolayevich paced a short three by three area of the combat-information-center aboard the Troika-class carrier Admiral Yeltsin Danilovich, so named for a Hero of the Soviet Union during the Schayne Plains War. Communist or not, Birkaine did not relinquish the memory of its warriors lightly; the immense vessel, a small floating city, was the command ship of the 3rd Fleet of the Ruthenian Navy, out of Arkhangelsk in northern Birkaine, one of the larger port cities of Birkaine and one of the anchorages for the immense fleets of the world's third superpower.

He paced, because for the last eighteen hours, his pilots had been engaged with elements of the Californian and Eurasian navies. He paced because his screening vessels were doing the same, and because the older, loaned Ruthenian vessels were crumbling like a tissue house before the Birkanian fleets, with their newer, modern ships such as the Troika-class CVNs and Gorshkov-class DDGs, could reinforce them. They had been at combat readiness since the preparations of the reclamation of Pripyat had been finalized, with the immensity of the Birkanian navy spread across the breadth of the coastline of the Union. Being the nearest fleet, the third had mustered out from said coast with haste when confirmation had come through that the stone-aged Ulyanovsk-class Ukrayina was withdrawing after suffering immense damage to her superstructure and great loss of life, providing an unwelcome opening in the naval lines of the Ruthenian fleets, and providing the DLFOR an avenue of landing troops in Ruthenia, or worse Birkaine themselves, an unacceptable recourse of events that the admiral nor his captains nor their crews between them intended to simply let happen.

"Where the hell are those bombers!?" The Admiral bellowed in frustration, it was not that his men were losing, quite the reverse, as he understood it, the MiG-29Ks from the Ukrayina had played merry hell on the Useans Fort Grace and his own Su-33s were pounding on them hard enough to force the FSN to redirect their planes from supporting actions overland. The additional firepower of two flights of Tu-160 White Swans would be a welcome note to the symphony of war and with good luck, would force the Fort Grace and her escorts into withdrawing, if only to preserve their lives, bringing a parity to the forces arrayed against one another, each having one carrier either sank or in retreat.

"ETA 8 minutes from drop point, Admiral." ...

Ruthenian 5th Army
192nd Guards Tank Division
Corporal Anastasia Zakharovna
15:30 Hours

The hulking beast of steel and composites that surrounded Nastya Zakharovna was not an aged T-80U, or T-72BM, nor any other ex-Soviet thing that the Ruthenians had dragged out of warehouses, often literally. No, the low profiled 'Western looking' BT6-R main battle tank was a pride of the Commonwealth of Birkaine, and the 192nd Guards Tank Division was full of them. One of the many fully Birkanian divisions, it was a Guards division under the Commonwealth as well, and was showing why as Natsya engaged the tank's autoloader while her commander, Captain Maksimilian Makarovich punched in calculations to the targeting computer with a practiced ease. The 125mm gun, formerly chemical, upgraded with an electromagnetic cannon by the Commonwealth prior to the Proteus Event, discharged by a press of a button and down range, though Nastya could not see it, an Eslovakian tank lurched to a sudden stillness as its innards were supercavitated by the shell that simply kept going through its armor at almost incomprehensible speeds, a sheath of plasma enveloping the BT6-R in its wake. Already, the turret was traversing and adjustments being made before in but a short few seconds later, the tank spoke again, that shell passing through an aged Belkan made Panzer C belonging to the pseudo-Romans of Acrium.

The 192nd had been called up from the rear, holding in place a DLFOR break-out force that had mauled the containing forces of the 14th Infantry with childish ease, as armored units tended to do when running into squishy infantry and their light armored contingents. To the general displeasure of the democrats, since the arrival of the Birkanian 192nd, they had not moved forward in a broad, sweeping arc that went from the borders of the sea to south of the near-by city of Rivine, where fighting was particularly harsh with units from both sides pushing hard against the other to dislodge them. There was little in the way of speaking, like a well oiled machine and nearly telepathic understanding of what one another wanted, the two man and one woman crew of the BT6-R began moving forward, in tandem with others of its kind, as well as BTR-90s and BMP-4s which had disgorged their infantry contingents, who were moving carefully up alongside their vehicular support in a supporting role, behind them all, a great sheath of red-white smoke erupted along the Ruthenian lines before mere seconds later, the immense explosions born of multitudes of rocket launches, high-explosive in variety, scoured the democratic lines. The Ruthenians gave a whoop to the gods of war at that, their artillery had been bogged down and largely exterminated in the center of Pripyat by the DLFOR's relentless bombing campaigns, combined with the PDF's counter-attack, concentrating on Ruthenia with their limited, now augmented, numbers while leaving Mennova to the democrats.
