I blame the inability for the USAF and Navy to strike real military targets (rather than just, you know, bridges they could replace in a matter of hours) as well as the Army and Marine's total lack of counter-insurgency competence. These factors dragged out the war to the extent where the constant media coverage swayed public opinion in favor of pulling out, despite the US military's growing number of successes and experience with COIN warfare (USAF Phantoms were being equipped with guns, bombing missions expanded to supply centers rather than just supply lines, cross border raids on the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail, etc. were getting to be very effective).

In my opinion, we should have never intervened. If we did, it should have been to replace the government of South Vietnam with a less corrupt and more democratic one. People would have been less willing to join the communists if they had a government that actually cared about them.
