"Do you want the Montreal island to become an independent nation, cut from all ties with the United Athena Islands?"

However, the Athenian parliament passed a new bill, The Separation Act, the night after the election stating that separation must have 75% of the population's approval, therefore invalidating Montreal's victory. The people were outraged. The population quickly split into two groups: the federalists (ones who want to stay part of Athenia, and the nationalists, those who want to separate). Tensions rose, and the Athenian government sent troops to patrol the island. Things then got out of hand. Riots broke out, and the country was brought into a civil war. Citizens have been seen taking shelter in neighbouring Jamaica Island. The Montreal separatists claim that the Athenian military is conducting airstrikes on the island, but nothing has been confirmed.

The Montreal separatists demand:
- The continuation of the fair and democratic separation of the island
- That the government abolish the Separation Act
- That the Athenian government withdraw its troops from the island

The Athenian government demands:
- That the island remains part of the union until 75% approval
- The halting of the rebel attacks
- The return to the peaceful state that Athenia has been in since its creation

The two governments have not met to discuss the crisis, and nothing shows that it will happen soon. The Athenian government has put the nation under martial law until the civil war has ended. Both sides are requisition aid from the international community.

Are there cultural / social / political (etc.) differences between Montreal and the rest of the UAI?

This will decide what side I choose.

Montreal is a more French speaking island, with more capitalist views than the UAI. Montreal also wants to have a bigger army than the UAI and produce nuclear weapons. Montreal is also a more religious island, and wants to ban abortion and gay marriage, and wants the Church to control the education system. On the other hand, the UAI is a more socialist (but democratic) society, with a smaller but better paid and trained army. They also believe in more progressive and liberal ideas, such as the legalization of marijuana and abortion.

They consider themselves to be distinct from the rest of the country. They just want to have full autonomy in controlling the region.
