Today, at 3:05 PM, big news has come out of the nation of Brookside. The country, having previously been a colonial venture of wealthy British and American citizens, decided to declare independence from its mother country after having largely been left to its own affairs since settlers first arrived.
The official declaration is set to be read shortly, but until then, we have managed interview some Brooksiders of this occasion. Here is what one gentleman had to say:
"Oh you know, we're all in favor of it. We've been pretty much independent from the start, but this is just a formality. But hey, maybe this will lead to a bright future."
Most Brooksiders are in favor of this move, feeling that they've already been rather autonomous anyways, already having their own government and economy for quite some time. Brookside is optimistic about the future, and hopes that it can rise to be a respectable nation in the world.
Thanks for watching.
The Declaration
We the People of Brookside do hereby severe all political with our mother country and do therefore declare ourselves to be the free and independent Commonwealth of Brookside. This is not a declaration of hostilities, but rather a declaration of the obvious and inevitable, as it is every nation's right to attain independence and self-determination.
We have no grievances to list, other than than we as a people find it ridiculous for us to continue to surrender sovereignty to our mother nation, when we have long been pursuing a policy of self-governance and autonomy since our founding.
In light of this rather brief and to the point declaration of independence, President William Smith is offering a message of goodwill to the world in exchange for diplomatic recognition of the Commonwealth of Brookside.
