"You don't know who we are do you?" Said Muse, fear welling up in her stomach. "You have no idea who we are. We were the crew of Atlas' UITU-13 Deadman's Express. We crashed here. We're just pilots," She said, gesturing to her jumpsuit. "We don't have any intel for you. Just hook us up with a Remnant VTOL, and we'll be on our way." She said sadly. Her mind flashed with images of Shura and Petya. The time Shura had gotten so drunk he passed out enroute to a dropzone, the time Petya had fixed the landing gear under fire from insurgents in Western Shyluz. She missed them terribly, they were her family. And now they were gone.

"Uh... Captain, we've got a problem. They're coming." said Yaro, loading his rifle.

"Shit, everyone, get in defensive positions behind the ROMULUS. Yaro, you try to get a hold off the Remnant flotilla, fire another flare if you have to. I don't care. Get us the hell out of here." Muse ran back behind her bricks, and charged her revolver. Yaro began yelling into the radio, screaming for evac, begging to have someone pull them out.

And then the screeching began as zeds ran up the metal staircase.

Platin swore in annoyance "I said an evac was coming." The group made a semicircle around the door and began firing, as the door burst open. Vemar and the boy had gone off to get something to hold the door shut. They had parts of a fence and were rushing back. The AMAT squad used up their ammunition in their magazines just as one zombie got through. It chopped down on Heinuburt's arm, thankfully not able to crack his armor since Frederick knocked it off with rifle and then smashed its head in. They slammed the door closed and had Vemar and the boy place the broken fence against the door. The AMAT squad piled against the door as Vemar and the boy ran to get more rubbish to use as a barricade. The zombies banged on the door and almost forced the AMAT troops off the door. However, they piled right back on, except one zombie was broken in half as they close the door. The "crawler" jumped onto Frederick who fell away from the door. He put up his arms but the zombie moved pass them and bit his shoulder. He screamed and hurled the zombie over the building's edge. Frederick dropped his assault rifle, for one of the survivors, grabbed his pistol and a gernade and ordered his team to open the door "It got me, let me buy some time!" They obeyed and he charged down, slowly turning into one himself, screaming in anger. His fired his pistol and dove into the horde, and hurled the grenade down onto the staircase stair panel. The grenade exploded, knocking down the staircase, blowing up the undead and Frederick. Except, the grenade had really saved the zombies and Frederick from a fate worst than death.

On the rooftop, the AMAT squad piled anything they could against the door. "I think that's it for now." Platin sighed. Vemar turned to the boy "Hey...um." The boy said "Alex." Vemar nodded "Okay, Alex, whatever. When the helicopter comes get in but leave the gun with us. We'll need it more." Suddenly Platin cursed and fired over the side of the building.
She swore "These bastards are climbing through a vent. The zombies pulled themselves out, on their backs, from a vent on the side of the building. It was like shooting fish in a barrel, until more came from other vents. "Circle up!" Vemar called and the Oblarenites and survivors made a circle in the center of the roof and shot at the incoming zombies. Johnston was in the middle of a reload when a zombie suddenly charged her. In a flash she raised the rifle and slammed it into the zombie's temple. For a woman who normal didn't go into the field she was quite brutal. Suddenly, music rained from the sky as an Oblarenite helicopter playing "Ride of the Valkyires" came in, guns blazing. The zombies imploded into bloody corpses as 4 ropes were lowed. The group on the roof quickly grabbed on, the helicopter still spraying lead. Once everyone had grabbed on the helicopter pulled into the sky toward the carrier to regroup and consider a new plan.

Over Landing Zone

Jolly clearly heard the scream for an evac over the radio headset he'd had on. Jolly walked to the front of the airplane and tapped the pilot's shoulder, who looked back quietly, expecting some kind of update. Jolly made eye contact with the pilot so the pilot could also read his lips as his voice spoke over the plane's intercom channel in case he couldn't hear it over the din of the aircraft's dual engines.

"Hey, what VTOLs are currently up?"

The pilot checked the control panel, "Um, our VTOL, and then 1, 3, and 4. 2 never lifted off, and 5 and 6 were the ones who crashed."

Jolly nodded, "We have the Shyulzan team needing evac. I want us to stick together, so all four planes will move in formation and we pick them up in this plane, understood? Move."

The pilot nodded and said a quick "yessir" before he relayed the orders to the three accompanying VTOLs. The four aircraft turned slowly and sped off across the city as Jolly listened to various other comms over the task force radio channel. The trip only took a few minutes to get within sight of the building. Jolly looked out the cockpit window of the aircraft and saw the Oblarenite aircraft pick up their team and take off. Jolly ground his teeth in furstration; He'd have to address that issue when the mission was over, everyone was on the same team in Atlas, and that meant you helped other teams.

The three assisting VTOLs turned their tails to the roof, their loading ramps opening as the planes' crew chiefs emplaced their machine guns on the ramps and assisted the Shyluzan team's fire suppression of the dead. Jolly's VTOL, VTOL Leader, lowered down to the roof slowly, but didn't quite land. The ramp lowered and hung open, lip of the ramp about three feet off the top of the roof. The crew chief carried a light machine gun and kneeled on the ramp, aiming but not firing, the engineer came to the ramp along with Jolly, both waving at the Shyluzan team to get aboard, Jolly's voice carrying over the roof, "Get the fuck abaord, now! C'mon!" The three assisting planes were providing enough cover fire that the Shyluzan teams could turn tail and retreat to the VTOL Jolly was on.

Crew of the Express

Muse's day was looking up. The whoever-the-hell special operations troops picked up and left, only to be replaced by four Remnant VTOLs. The ROMULUS sentry was firing away, and it's burps of fire combined with the snare-drumming off the Remnant chainguns produced a pleasant sound. She tapped Yaro on the shoulder, notifying him it was time to go. The zeds were beginning to overrun the position anyway. They ran towards who Muse could only assume was the leader of Atlas. A man named Jolly. He was yelling something as the two Shyluzan VTOL crew jumped aboard, ducking under the automatic gunfire. The bay doors closed, and one could here the ROMULUS pecking away at the zed horde charging up the building.

"You must be Jolly. I'm Captain Muse Doubek of the Deadman's Express. Over there," She gestured at the tall man with a stocky build carrying a backpack size radio and a large revolver, "Is Airman Yaroslava Horvatincic. My flight technician, Petty Officer Petya Hiroslak, and one of my gunners, Airman Shura Cervenka, are KIA. We managed to ensure Shura's not coming back. Petya though... Petya might. What's the situation boss?"

The short woman with brown hair wearing the Shyluzan flight suit wearily saluted her CO, smiling giddily at the fact they'd just been rescued.

"Those damned idoits refused to come with us!" Venat cursed. "So ungrateful! We lost a man saving their arses! This always happens to us Oblarenites! No one cares." Heinburt added angrily." Vemar ordered "We'll stay here and protect them until they get aboard that other craft." So while the troops from Shyluz pulled out the Oblarenites rained lead on the undead. But as history proved they went unnoticed, unthanked an most of all unrespected.

Jolly returned a quick and sloppy half-salute to the woman before running a hand through his greying hair. He waited to speak until the loading ramp was fully up and the crew chief had stowed his light machine gun on a lock strap on the wall beside the back rows of jump seats. His stomach moved and lurched as the VTOL gained altitude away from the building's roof, and he could only assume the other three aircraft had done likewise. Once he was sure the planes were in relative safety from the undead, unless they grew wings and flew after them, Jolly spoke to the woman, holstering his pistol as he spoke,

"Yeah, I'm Lieutenant Colonel Jack Rogers, but I see you already know my nickname, so that helps. Nice to meet you, Captain Doubek. I'm sorry to hear about your crew, but if you didn't already know this, it's been a rough and costly operation for a lot of teams. The situation is this: WE've got several teams en route to place nuclear-level bombs at two locations in the city. After they are placed, all teams are to extract within a safe time window in order to detonate the weapons and hopefully destroy large poritons of the city and eradicate a large portion, if not all of the undead. From there, we RTB." Jolly walked towards the front of the aircraft to look out the front windscreen and saw that they Oblarenite helicopter was still on-site as well, maybe Jolly could get them to follow up. He looked back at Muse and yelled, "The real question right now is, whether you want to go home now or give to paybeck to some of these infected by sticking around?"

Crew of the Express

Muse smiled devilishly at Jolly. She had just the thing to get back at those bastards for Shura and Petya.

"Sir, I have just the thing. We know that the plan is getting soldiers to the boom-points yes? The only real issue is a horde of zeds getting in the way. Have you heard of Khrabrost Station sir? The Shyluzan space station?"

She had a ominous glint in her eye as she spoke.

"We have a second station. Khrabrost Square. We have some... loud noisemakers that might serve to get the zed concentration to this positions, that is, if the ground teams can stay quiet enough." She gestured briskly.

"It has a very simple name. The TITANICA Project. It was designed to be a standard ordinance pod similar to the ROMULUS and REMUS drops, but with an entirely different purpose. The only issue is the shockwave. We'd have to move a fair bit away for it to be a safe drop, which of course is priority one." She looked expectantly into Jolly's eyes.

"Sound good boss?"

Jolly

Jolly turned and smiled at the Shyluzan captain and shook his head slightly,

"That happens to sound a lot like something my military has... But I'm going to have to deny that. There are too many teams scattered around the city for that to be safe to employ as a tactic. The potential for one of the task force's teams to get caught up in the shockwave or killed by the blast is too high and to risky for us to attempt, so the answer is no."

Jolly turned and spoke into the pilot's ear, telling the VTOL pilot to send out a radio request on an open channel that the Oblaranite helicopter would hopefully pick up, telling the helo to stick close to the VTOLs. Then Jolly turned back and walked back to Muse.

"If you have any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear it, but currently, we have some other teams to assist if they call for it. An Exantonian aircraft has gone down carrying their team and a couple other teams have gone to SAR. I'd like us to be on site in case they need an airlift."

Muse frowned slightly. She really did want that building to go 'boom' in a rather spectacular way. Oh well. She gathered up her thoughts, what else could the sat-net do?

Drop mobile ammo supplies and turrets.

"Do any teams need a resupply, or a suppression device? Khrabrost Square can do both." She smiled thinking about the ROMULUS turret's sixty-thousand rounds in a barrel with robotic accuracy and a fire-rate of far to much. "You saw the minigun, that was a ROMULUS drop. We have more of those, if a team calls us for air support, and we're to far out to help, a ROMULUS can be there in a short amount of time. Also, what team was that who literally helped us, and then flew off? That was rather odd."

She looked quizzically at Yaro, who was casually chatting with one of the VTOL's crew. She shrugged, and returned to Jolly.

"Other than that, we're a bit useless. But give us a rifle and we can assist in extraction operations as well, I suppose." She looked gloomy, as if she hated the idea of using a small arm. After all, she was a trained pilot with a reputation to uphold.

"Got something on the open channel." The pilot called to Vemar. Vemar took a pair of headphones and listened to the request. She frowned a frustrated frown. "We're going to follow them." Vemar said. Platin hissed "Has Oblaren really just come to servicing the needs of the weak? And of those ungrateful of our help?" Vemar said "Look they want our help so we'll give it." The Oblarenites rocked their helicopter a little to tell the other craft they were following.

"This is Viper Squad, requesting evac,"Pence said while firing at the undead that had broke the buildings door. He was low on ammunition for his M16A2.

They had already witnessed the death of their former squadmate, with another member suffering minor burns.

There was now a mere 40 or so undead waiting in the buildings main floor, and that led to the stop of firing. They were going to wait there for a reply,or would be torn apart by the surrounding zombies.

"We have low ammunition, and are surrounded by around 50 zombies,"Pence spoke into coms, while also listing his coordinates.

Placing the only C4 on the hatch that allowed the team on the top of the 3 floored building, they were giving up their last explosive to blow the undead bastards up. "We have about fifteen minutes. If we dont get off this building by that time, were blowing the C4 with us on it."

Jolly

"That was the Oblaranite team, they're new additions; just vetted and sent in, actually. As for helping out, you can grab a rifle over there, but there's not much else you can do. Maybe a resupply pod, but you'd be wasting them by calling them in unless you drop 'em at a safe zone."

Jolly pointed Muse to a rank against the wall that was partially separating the pilots from the crew and cargo compartment of the aircraft. On the rack were a couple R17 rifles, the basic rifle of the Remnant Military. As he did that, a hand automatically went his ear, reflexively pressing the earbud closer to his ear so he could hear the transmission coming through. It sounded like the CSN's Viper team was being overrun and needed evac. Jolly pulled his tablet from off the bench seats and looked at the satellite overview to get their approximate location. He went back to Muse and spoke loud enough she could hear,

"Looks like we've gotta move out quickly, another team's being overrun. You wanna help out?" Jolly turned and jogged away, not waiting for an answer to the rhetorical question. He made his way to the pilots and relayed the information. The pilot then relayed the information to the supporting trio of Remnant VTOLs while sending a support request from two aircraft.

The first request was quick, "Oblaranite aircraft, this is Atlas VTOL Lead, over. Request assistance on dustoff of CSN Viper Team. They're under heavy contact."

The second request was a second later, "Hurtian gunship, Atlas VTOL Lead. Request immediate oversight. CSN Viper Team in heavy contact. Request CAS on surrounding areas and building. Coordinates are as follows."

Jolly listened to the support requests even as the aircraft tilted and veered towards the building where Viper squad was being swarmed. The report was fifty Z's, but there could be more outside the building as well. An entire horde. "Viper Squad, Atlas 1-Actual. Support en route, ETA five minutes on support and dustoff. Mark location with smoke if possible, as air support will be coming in trigger heavy."

The VTOL pilot heard Jolly's response and added something else to both the Hurtian and Oblaranite helos: "Friendlies will be marked with smoke, avoid firing on smoke, repeat. All surrounding areas considered hostile, fire at will upon range."

Adrian sighed.

Seemed like a lot of the squads were calling for an evac just as they were getting their feet wet with zombie-giblets.

It didn't take long for him to nose the armed Mi-6 around and towards the fiasco, giving Lt Hayes enough time to line-up the remotely-operated turrets and start unleashing an 82mm shell, followed by a volley of 23mm light-cannon fire (pretty much this or an XM307 that traded payload for velocity) and a follow-up of 35mm grenades from the rear-ramp to soak-up any walkers that managed to shamble back into the breech in their line as Adrian circled around for another pass with the 82mm.

Looking at the fuel-gauge, Adrian radio'd back.

"Atlas-1 Actual, this is Overwatch. We've got enough fuel and ammo to stay on-station for another 45 minutes. Requesting dustoff for Viper-squad as soon as applicable."

Sierra Team, Southern District

Progress was slightly faster now. Marc had driven off the main roads and was using the side roads now, which were less clear clogged with abandoned vehicles. An occasional small group of infected would take notice of them and try to pursue, but with more room to move, the Humvee easily gets away.

Hart monitors the civilians an radio wavelengths. It's likely any survivors would take notice of the recent military activity and would try to contact them in some way.

A weak, static-filled message comes in over the radio.

"Hello? Can anyone hear us? Please, we're survivors and we need help. We're holed up at an old warehouse on the corner of Carson Street and Cherry Avenue, near the airport."

"This is Captain Michael Hartman of the ADF, we have heard your message and are moving to assist. Over."

"Oh thank god! We heard the helicopters and hoped help was on the way."

"Stand by, please. ETA is fifteen minutes. Over."

"Yes, thank you. We'll be waiting."

Hart switches from the civilian channel to the air support channel.

"Viggen-6-2, this is Sierra-1-Actual. We have made contact with survivors. Requesting a recon flyover of the area. Over."

"Roger that. We are five minutes out. We'll buzz the area and see what's happening do an there. Out."

"Sierra-1-Actual, this is Viggen-6-1, we are back on station. Standing by for orders. Over."

"Roger that. Continue to standby, we may need your assistance depending upon how many survivors are found out here. Over."

"Roger that. Entering holding pattern. Also, just a heads up, some one pulled the chain for support, Viggen-6-3 and Viggen-6-4 are enroute. ETA is about an hour and a half, they'll be stopping at the carrier offshore to refuel before arriving on station. Over."

"Roger that. Thanks for the heads up. Out."

Hart isn't sure why more aircraft were getting sent in under orders from the ADF. This was an Atlas operation. ADF assets wouldn't be getting deployed unless-

"Ms. de Mazelle, you wouldn't happen to be the one calling in those Ospreys, would you?" Hart asks, eyeing the quiet Section-8 operative.

"The teams have already lost several aircraft. It only makes sense to request reinforcements to replace them," Reina replies, cocking her head to the side. "I've been listening in on the radio chatter, and it's quite clear more air assets are required."

"I see... Next time, it would be better if you cleared that kind of thing with the commanding officer first."

"I suppose you're right."

Hart sighs slightly, and switches to the Atlas channel.

"Atlas-1-Actual, this is Sierra-1-Actual. We have some unexpected air assets arriving in the area. My team has enough support as it is, so I'll vector them in to work with you when they arrive. Over."

"This is the Oblarenite aircraft. We'll assist in taking out your undead problem. Our machine guns are basically still full and we have a resupply crate in here for our rifles. We'll follow and take them out with our guns. Should there be too many we will fly at a slow height and play music to get their attention and lure them away. Over." Vemar said into the radio.

Near Disneyland, Union City
"KEEP ON MOVING!" Nikolai yelled.

They had been running for their lives for the last fifteen minutes, with no help in sight. The horde was hot on their heels, and gaining. The cars on the highway helped to slow down the horde, but Nikolai knew that they would all be zombie food soon without help.

"As if.... we didn't need... any encouragement." Vladek said.

"Don't waste... your breath." Viktor replied.

They finally reached Disneyland, or at least the road to it, but Nikolai suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.

"Hide!"

The squad looked confused, but then they saw a red dot. Right on Igor's face.

BOOM. A report of a sniper rifle resounded across the empty entrance to the park, but Igor ducked just in time. Before the sniper had a chance to fire again, they were hiding behind some parked cars.

The horde was getting closer.

Nikolai swore into the radio, and then yelled:

"Hostiles at Disneyland park and a horde of necros at our rear! We are surrounded! Need backup immediately!'

The horde was within 200 feet of them.

"Come one, Nikolai what are we going to do!" yelled Alexander. He pulled out his gun and started shooting at the horde. The rest of the squad did the same.

Nikolai raised his head slightly. The soldiers were now rushing across the parking lot, ready to shoot anything that moved. Just then, he saw a group of Congrepovians in the distance, their distinctive uniform gleaming in the sunlight.

"I'd rather get shot." Nikolai said to himself, and threw three smoke grenades. They exploded in a burst of blue smoke, which he hoped would signal to the rescue team that they were friendly, and yelled:

"Move, comrades, move!" The squad charged across the battlefield while the Congrepovians started laying down suppression fire. A group of Black Ops teams were waiting behind a van in their way. They popped out, but the team literally pushed them out of the way. Confused, the soldiers looked behind them, and saw the horde of zombies. They were devoured shortly after.

Nikolai could see the Congrepovians up ahead. "Come on!" one of them shouted. "Hurry!"

Bullets whizzed around them. Just then, one of bullet hit Igor in the knee. "Shit!" he yelled, and fell. Viktor, who was behind him, picked him up in a fireman's carry.

Moments later, they reached the van and hopped, just in time to escape the horde and the angry soldiers behind them.

“They in?” called out Leighton from the van’s driver seat as he fired on the approaching zombies with his pistol.

“Almost… yes! Go!” yelled John from the back as the last Ukrainian climbed in. Leighton dropped the pistol on his lap, floored the accelerator, and the van shot away.

“Were those other soldiers with you?” asked John. One of the Ukrainians shook their head.

“Nexus, any ID on them?” asked Leighton.

“No, nobody with a good camera got a good look at them.” answered Nexus. He deliberately spoke through the mic on Leighton’s PCU so that the Ukrainians could hear too.

“Well, they aren’t a threat anymore, and we’re okay. That’s good enough for now.” said Leighton.

“Actually the Ukrainians are a man short.” said Nexus “There’s nothing you can do now, though.”

“Crap, I’m sorry.” said Leighton, before focusing on driving again.

A couple minutes later:

“Gah!” yelled Thomas as Leighton swerved a clump of cars by less than a foot. “Slow down! I do not want to die from a car accident before I engage the enemy!”

“Sorry!” said Leighton “Charles is the one who’s good at this, and he didn’t have to contend with all the zombies we attracted driving along this road multiple times!”

“Slowing down will get you killed.” said Nexus “Thomas, unclip camera four from your chest, peel off the yellow paper on the bottom, and stick it to the dashboard so that it is pointing forwards.” Thomas followed his instructions.

“Thank you.” said Nexus. Seconds later, a multicolored line appeared on Leighton’s HUD, showing the optimal path down the road. Leighton followed the path as well as he could as it wound its way around the abandoned vehicles and the zombies that had shambled over to check out the noise.

“Leighton, drive the course exactly as indicted.” said Nexus to Leighton “A path will be made.”

“Thomas, get ready to fire your rifle through the windshield.” said Nexus to Thomas.

“Okay, why?” asked Thomas, readying his gun and aiming it forwards.

“Certain upcoming zombies will flash an orange outline.” said Nexus to Thomas “Shoot them enough to drop them to the ground before the van reaches them.”

“Shoot, it’s the pincer again.” said Leighton, seeing a pileup of cars with only a narrow lane through it. The vehicles had had to slowly drive through it in single file on the trip out from the landing site. Now that they'd driven through a few times, the place was crawling with zombies.

“Do not slow down, or the van will be mobbed.” said Nexus to Leighton. “Drive the course at speed, Thomas will clear the zombies.”

“Fire.” said Nexus to Thomas, highlighting the nearest zombie in the middle of the opening. Thomas dropped it, and Nexus instantly highlighted the next. The van barreled forwards, as all of the zombies among the wreckage turned to face the source of the gunshots. Thomas focused as hard as he could on firing. Each zombie turned orange on his HUD in turn. He pointed his gun at it. Three rounds. It began falling and the next was highlighted. Three rounds. It was still highlighted. Three more. The next one was highlighted. Three rounds. They were getting close. He’d dropped maybe five of twelve? Six of twelve. Seven. Ei-

The van slammed into the remaining zombies and plowed onward. It lurched over the bodies Thomas had shot, skidded through the gap in the wreckage and rolled onward, swerving wildly. Leighton managed to avoid slamming into a truck in the middle of the road, but couldn’t dodge a mid-sized sedan, which the van broadsided.

Leighton instinctively closed his eyes before the impact. Less than a second afterwards he opened them. There was an airbag in his face, slowly deflating, and he felt about sore. Other than that, he seemed to be uninjured. He could wiggle his finger and toes fine. He reached down to unfasten his seatbelt, and looked at his chest armor.

“Crikey.” said Nexus. The seatbelt had dug a deep gouge in Leighton's armor. It stopped about an inch into what Leighton suspected was two inches of chest armor.

“Don’t worry, it’s meant to do that.” said Nexus as Leighton unfastened his seatbelt and dug around in the mass of airbags for his pistol. “The outer layer is compressible to absorb bludgeoning impacts like a baseball bat hitting you. I guess we’ve found a second use for it now.”

“Right.” grunted Leighton, finding the pistol and slamming a clip into it. He reached over and grabbed Thomas’s shoulder. “You good, man?” he asked.

“I’m alive.” said Thomas. “Dead doesn’t hurt. So this isn’t dead.”

“Oh, what hurts?” asked Leighton, satisfied that Thomas wasn’t about to die. Leighton shifted around and pushed on his door with his feet. The door looked jammed, but not immovable.

“My right arm.” said Thomas “The airbag designers apparently did not consider the use case where someone is aiming a rifle through the windshield when the vehicle crashes.”

“It’s not meant to bend that way.” said Nexus “You definitely broke something.”

“I gathered as much from the pain.” said Thomas. “Speaking of the pain…”

“Yes, it would be nice if this armor had localized painkiller dispersal systems.” said Nexus “Regrettably, it does not. Grit your teeth.”

Leighton kicked out the door and hopped out into the street. He dropped a couple nearby zombies with his pistol and then reached into the van and grabbed out his rifle.

“We should be mobile now.” said Leighton, looking at the horde walking towards them from the way they’d come. “John, you good?”

“Dandy.” said John. “Thank R&D for the extra padding around my solar plexus, where my rifle decided to nestle up in the crash. Still a bit short on breath, but I’m fine. I wore a seatbelt.”

“Laudable.” said Leighton, dropping into a firing stance and popping off bursts at zombies as they approached. He satisfied himself that his side of the van was safe for a bit, and ran around to the other side. He fired at a couple more, reloaded, then helped Thomas out of the van and handed him his pistol. John climbed out the back of the van and joined in firing at the zombies.

“Charles, status.” said Leighton “Helicopter evac here would be nice about now.”

Leighton waited for a reply and none came. “Charles?” he asked again.

“I lost contact with him in the hospital.” said Nexus “I’m currently waiting to hear from him again.”

“Is the hospital clear?!” asked Leighton.

“No, b-” began Nexus.

“We need to get there then! Ukrainians, you ready to move?” called out Leighton. “We’re at, um, Santa Ana Freeway near The City Drive South. Goal is St. Joseph Hospital. Let’s go!”

Jolly

The four Remnant VTOLs arrived shortly after the Hurtian gunship started opening fire, the Oblaranite aircraft in tow right behind the VTOLs. The VTOL with Jolly and the Shyluzans aboard slowed and started to descend towards the roof where Viper Squad was holed up. The other three VTOLs took a position much like they had when they rescued the Shyluzans.

Jolly got multiple reports nearly at once and tried to respond to them all. He got the Hurtian gunship on the channel and tried to speak even over th edeafening sound gunfire and explosions from several platforms and sources at once, "Overwatch, Atlas-1 Actual, copy. We're lowering down now. Remember, just don't hit any of us, please. That's not adviseable nor acceptable in the current situation."

The VTOL lowered to the top of the roof, the ramp slowly descending, the airraft's crew chief unhooking the LMG and aiming it down the ramp as cover, the engineer pulling his pistol out of a holster on his hip in order to provide a second source of cover fire and a hand if anyone needed the help. Jolly switched channels to reply to Sierra-1 Actual, which he remembered was the ADF team, "Sierra-1 Actual, Atlas-1 Actual, copy. Air assets acknowledged, however, they are not needed. We currently have five aircraft on-site. They can come if they want, but it's not necessary."

Jolly looked behind him to see the ramp. The CSN team was moving towards the ramp, "Oblaranite aircraft, Atlas-1 Actual copy. Go wild."

Finally, something was going right. Sure, there were some bumps, but at least the rescuing was going al- "SAM incoming!" Jolly couldn't hear the whoosh of the rocket engine as the shoulder-carrier surface-to-air missile took off and targeted VTOL 3, to the left of the group. Jolly also just barely made out the thin white line that had sped from a rooftop a few buildings over. What Jolly did notice was the explosion as the missile impacted the aircraft's front windscreen, the aircraft instantly began to spin and swirl out of control as the pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft were killed instantly. VTOL 3 luckily spun away from the rest of the aircraft as it lost altitude, the crew chief falling off the ramp where he stood with his machine gun, dropping the hundred feet to the pavement, the impact killing him instantly. The engineer, in the middle of the aircraft, was restrained against a bench seat in the craft as it spun away and then spun back, hitting the the building across the street before bouncing back into the street, clearing a path of destruction before the aircraft's fuel tanks exploded, enveloping the plane and the undead around it in a fireball.

Jolly looked back to Viper Squad and waved his arm while speaking into the comms, "All aircraft evade, now! Hostiles on roof three buildings down! Overwatch, move to engage, cover the VTOLs and the Olbaranite helo!"

The Remnant VTOL pilot was impressive, to say the least. Though, he had nothing on Muse. The loading bay was down, VTOL 3 was also down, and Muse held a rifle with disgust. The VTOL was a scene of utter chaos, and Jolly himself looked to be panicking a little. Not good. Muse grabbed another rifle and called for Yaro before hurling it at him.

"Yaro! Helmets on!" The two Shyluzans donned the metal helms near simultaneously. The HUDs inside blinked into life, and Muse, despite her small form, was incredibly intimidating as the custom graphic which adorned her helm was the symbol of the infamous 73rd Air Cavalry, or more commonly: The Flying Bears. Muse motioned for Yaro to move onto the loading ramp, and they both ran.

Now, for a bit of lore. The 73rd Air Cav is not just a standard VTOL assault flotilla like most other Air Cav units. The 73rd are the single best pilots that Shyluz has, and as such are handpicked to become a member of UITU-VTOL. And even then, your performance must be admirable for you to be sent to UITU-13. However, unlike most pilots, who, when downed, lack necessary combat skills, all members of UITU-VTOL are trained in the use of many weapon systems, and are generally trained alongside the UITU teams they'll support. In essence, they're only slightly more specialized UITU operators.

"Jolly, can you get your pilot any closer to that building, we don't have a shot from here!" Yelled Muse, as the rangefinders inbuilt in her helm showed the huge range between the two forces. She grimaced as another SAM shrieked through the air, thankfully missing them.

"Bloody bastards!" Heinburt shouted as a SAM shot by the craft. The Oblarenites opened fire instantly, machine guns and small missiles (or rockets, not sure what a heli usually has) "Pilot set us down on the street, we'll kill them all." Vemar ordered. The crafted dripped down low to avoid being shoot at and dropped off the Sterbens (squad name). Vemar kicked in the door and the Oblarenites ascended the stairs, weapons ready. Any survivors from the downed aircraft were taken up with the heli. Then the helicopter began to circle the roof, shooting as it did so.

The Hurti Mi-6 responded to the flash from the MANPAD almost without orders to engage, quickly slamming an 82mm willie-pete right down its spider-hole; the damage was already done, another VTOL went down as Adrian had to decide between taking evasive maneuvers or keeping the helo level for accurate fire support... he chose the former, but insisted to lay-down suppressive-fire all across the entire square and probably every single building they would have to fly over or around on the way out with the Remnant air-support, viper-team, and whoever else they managed to pick-up before calling for their help.

Things were getting way too hot for sustained helicopter operations, but if that big 'ol bird's number was up, it would go down swinging, kicking, and screaming like a banshee on PCP.

More missile-warnings, and Adrian popped enough flares to briefly turn the night into day as the big fat fucking plane picked-up speed and started to buck and yaw. Although this blinded Hayes's sight-picture, this did not stop him from shooting. His orders were clear: kill zekes. It didn't make much difference whether they were designated or not, realy; even if anything other than zekes happened to be making sweet-necrophiliac-love with them in their final tender moments.

Meanwhile:

The ground-crew managed to get their train up and moving, encountering minor obstructions that required the train to slow-down and shunt its way through intersections with an improvised plow fitted to an flatbed-car full of scraps to check for some of the more explosive kinds of hazards, behind that was another flatbed, empty, just there so that if they hit something that would cause a de-rail, that it would decouple and crush itself on impact. Behind this sat the actual locomotive, and a flatbed carrying a set of ramps and various useful-looking automobiles they managed to get up there from the industrial parking-lots, they even found a motorcycle...

Even moving slowly, most of the undead weren't exactly coordinated enough to make the hobo-leap, and more often managed to get themselves caught between the rails and several hundred tons of locomotive... More of a threat was the living kind, for which the vastly outnumbered squad kept a sharp lookout for as they crossed the second railway-bridge, placing all rivers on the path to their objective behind them.

Here is where they would have to dismount.

Kayora informed Nexus that they found a suitable drop-off point for any combat-evacuees who wished to rejoin the fray, and that said location would become the fall-up-point for the carrier-team to make a speedy helicopter-free evacuation.

From their location, it was a nearly straight-shot down Florence Avenue to the stricken carrier, a mere 20 klicks away.

Viggen-6-2
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Arnold Matson was flying his Osprey over the reported area of the survivors when he saw the distant explosion of the SAM hitting the Remnant VTOL and the ensuing storm of gunfire.

"Shit, I knew there were reports of MANPADS in the area, but who'd have thought they'd be true," mutters his co-pilot, Warrant Officer Wesley Vaughn.

CW2 Matson accesses the Atlas radio channel. "Atlas-1-Actual, this is Viggen-6-2. What level of ADS threat are we facing out here? If it gets too hot, we might need to bug out till the threat is neutralized. Over."

Staff Sergeant Trevor Danwick, the crew chief, calls back to Matson. "Sir, I see movement down by the warehouse. Looks like those shamblers are congregated around it. There must be survivors inside."

Matson banks the Osprey around, circling the warehouse.

"Yeah, I can see what you're talking about." He contacts Captain Hartman. "Sierra-1-Actual, this is Viggen-6-2. It looks like the location the survivors gave was good, but there's a hell of a lot of infected around the building. Over."

Sierra Team
"Roger that, we'll deal with them once we get there. Thanks for the heads up. Out."

Hart addresses his team. "Alright, you heard the report. There's a heavy concentration of infected around the target area. We'll use remote charges to draw a good number of them away and deal with the rest of them ourselves."

Viggen-6-2
"Alright, let's get some altitude. We're a little low for my liking right now," Matson says more to himself than to his crew.

He feels an almost comforting pressure pushing him into his seat as the Osprey accelerates upward. Leveling out, he circles around, setting a course to the area the other aircraft are operating in. Danwick shifts his grip on the Mk3 Gatling gun nervously, watching the rear quarter of the aircraft, scanning the ground for signs of hostile activity as the rooves come closer and closer with the increasing height of the buildings.

A sudden flash of smoke on a roof top catches Danwick off guard. An unknown hostile on the roof launches an RPG at the Osprey from the rear at an almost equal height. As the projectile narrow misses one of the Osprey's engine nacelles, Danwick swings the gun onto target and mashes down the firing button with his thumbs. A throaty roar cuts through the air as 1200 rounds per minute of API, API-T, and SAP-FRAG rounds tear up the roof top, literally cutting the hostile in half.

"We need more altitude, now!" Danwick shouts over the intercom.

Matson grabs the throttle controls and pushes into emergency power, sending the Osprey rocketing skyward. Rattling noises, like pebbles hitting a tin roof begin echoing through the aircraft.

"Taking small-arms fire from the rooftops!" calls out Vaughn, taking control of the chin mounted Mk3 with his helmet mounted gunsight.

Both guns open fire on the hostiles as the Osprey maneuvers to get out of range.

"This is Viggen-6-2. We have multiple warm-body hostiles in the southern district. Confirming small arms and RPGs. Possibility of MANPADS as well," Matson announces on the Atlas channel. "Sierra-1-Actual, hostiles are confirmed to be between you and the survivors. Watch yourself down there. We are breaking contact for the time being. Out."
"I don't know everything, just the things I know"

Jolly

Jolly watched the Oblarenite aircraft fly off to refuel without picking its team up before it had to pull out. At least the roof was cleared of enemies and incoming hostile fire thanks to them. He looked and saw that the CSN Viper team was aboard the aircraft. As soon as the last man's boot left the roof, Jolly's stomach lurched and the aircraft lifted off, hopping a couple buildings over to lower enough for the Oblaranites to hop on.

The two supporting VTOLs mirrored the movement, their ramps closing, crew chiefs packing up their guns in order to stay safe from any other fire that may come from other as-of-yet hidden hostile trying to attack them. As the lead VTOL lowered, Jolly looked over the Shyulzan and Shadownian teams as the Oblaranites were ushered aboard by the engineer and crew chief, "This place is becoming a bit crowded, eh?" Jolly cracked a small, strained smile to try and put the others at ease, even though his own stomach was churning from the recent firefight and threat of his life, not to mention the deaths of yet another Remnant VTOL crew. While he walked up to between the pilots, Jolly realized that he couldn't hear much; his ears were still ringing from the Hurti gunship. He glanced out the windshield and saw that the ringing was worth it, the Hurti aircraft had laid waste to the streets, turning the area basically into a puddle of gore scattered around the burning wreckage of VTOL 3. At least this rescue had gone right... Kind of.

Vemar turned to Jolly and said "Thanks for the lift. Our guys would have gotten us but there was still some fire and they had almost no gas. They're probably going to send another heli." Vemar clicked her radio and said " ONS Camours, do not send secondary helicopter. We got a lift." Ryans scanned the nearby buildings with his sniper's scope, he was good, not maybe not enough to pick off men from a build while in a helicopter. He was a sniper not a miracle worker. Platin asked "So...what's the plan now?"

"Damn,"Reatha sighed into her brown-green bandana that was coveirng the lower part of her face. She untied it,grabbing the cloth with her left hand and holding it tightly. "Ey Kill, the wound still covered?"

"Rah,"Killebrew replied, feeling her wound from the car crash. She pulled out her pistol, jammed and the hammer damaged. Her rifle's ammunition was also limited. Reminding her of where she had lost some of her supplies, she told Hagmeir to blow the C4 inside the building. Hagmeir nodded, peering out the window as his thumb clicked down on detonation stick. It collapsed the remaining of the the building.
