Actually, France, OMG said that Japan is currently a Regional Power making the transition to Solar Power status. I can't really take the credit for this, since they were largely in this position at the beginning of the roleplay anyway. All I really did was set up a colony (currently a frozen hell hole and a looong way off from being a self-sustainable and productive colony) and buy some old British dreadnoughts. Japan is still playing catch-up to the European powers, but it is already a match for most of the other Regional Powers. Persia is still some way away from making this transition, however.

Persia is currently occupied by two of the world's top powers, Britain and Russia. Russia should be willing to pull out of Persia if you are really nice to him since OMG is currently focusing more on extending his interstellar power, having seen that the Earth is really small game. Russia is the only really important nation, besides maybe France, that cares much about developing smaller nations, though Japan does have a selfish interest in building up Eastern nations to oppose their Western rivals, Japan being the only Eastern state with much hope of standing up to the West right now.

Persia does have potential, however. OMG himself stated that Persia is the Islamic state most likely to become the first interstellar caliphate, and you are a regional power which means you can interfere in the politics of your neighbours, though I'd keep away from the Eastern Roman Empire for the time being if you don't want Russian soldiers knocking on your door. With the Great Game in full swing, both Britain and Russia will be seeking your favour, as will France and Japan- France will want you to join the Cytherean Alliance, Japan will want you in its long awaited Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere (Persia isn't strictly East Asia, but with only four nations in East Asia Japan will probably be willing to extend its definition of Afghanistan and Persia).

Perhaps you could act as Japan's agent in the middle east in regards to the Reaper thread? Japan is currently profoundly frustrated not to be involved, so much so that a military force has been sent to Afghanistan. If the Shah wanted to gain Japan's ear, he could offer assistance to Japanese operations in the area. I imagine that the Shah shares the Chinese Empress and Japanese Emperor's views on the 'foreign barbarians' and 'Western imperialists'.

Just to make a quick point here in regards to Persia:
Historically, Persia was known for its export of glass and scientific instruments up until the mid 19th century. Persia was NOT a poor country. It was, however, about as stable as Somalia and had a tendency to engage in horrific civil wars. Persian Shah's had a lifespan rather shorter than the crazier sort of Roman Emperor.

I recall the story of one in particular who ended his days being castrated, blinded, 'violated' by the opposing army's stable boys in front of the enemy army before being thrown into a prison cell and left to starve to death. In summation, the Persians were not nice people. Any improvements to the country tend to get blown up and/or stolen by bandits or opposing rivals for the shahdom.

Your issue is stability, changing governments every few years, and corruption. Persia has a very last-gen military, probably worse than the Chinese military. Persian artillery is mostly ancient, heavy, and more or less immobile. Persian cavalry are the horse-riding sort.

Persia is a 'regional power' because they're respected to some degree by the Arab states and various tribes surrounding them. And they're fairly rich.

The occupation by the British and Russians is less colonial in nature and more of a military buffer zone set up by both states in case the other tries to invade through Persia. It's also intended to keep Persia from joining one side or the other. Both Britain and Russia probably support rival candidates for the Shahdom to keep the region unstable since, unlike the Chinese bandits, the Persians are content to rape and pillage each other, rather than their neighbors.

Persia also seems like the one nation on earth that has managed to, on a consistent basis, reclaim some of her glory and build a new Empire. Achaemenids, Parthians, Sassanids, Samanids, Timurids, Mughals, Abbasids, Tahirid, Seljuqs, Safavids, Afsharid, etc. Of course both the Russians and the British don't want a powerful Persian Empire as they kinda float into their current possessions and sell gaudy rugs.

Except the Chinese kinda take China and sit down chillin', not so much creating a new Empire so much as replacing it. Whereas the Persians constantly collapse then have someone rebuild an empire until it collapses.

Well, there were periods of collapse( Warring States comes to mine) or foreign rule (the Yuan were actually Mongols).

To be a solar power you need to prove your one by beating another nation around and taking their stuff.

The other solar powers to some extent have done this, Japan has not.

Seeing as Midwestern America has transferred over to the Swiss I would like to join once more, this time as Canada. I would like to have quite a bit of autonomy though, so that I can actually do things of my own accord and rely upon my own armed forces instead of having to run to the United Kingdom all the time.

Do note that I will be rebelling in the future, or simply politely ask to be granted full autonomy and continued close ties with the UK. That is a ways down the road though, I plan on being a faithful dominion for at least a fair while and supplying much needed food to the rest of the Empire.

If this is all okay with you NN, I will be using Ordinia to RP here once more and bring glory to Canada and the most benevolent British Empire.

I've had computer problems lately and have been out of touch (2 days). However, after reading all the threads one point comes to mind. Basically everyone here has a better than average backround in world history and we tend to keep the power structure to closely resemble 19th century power politics with some important differances (Space travel being the largest elephant in the room)

To really rollplay Persia I suggest hitting the Wiki for that country and getting a feel for what their general history was.

You may want to pay a visit to New Lisbon. The Portuguese have set themselves up as the major trading partner in the Eden Prime system. While undoubtably the other nations have ships, Portugal has the largest merchent fleet outside Venice in the system.
