Captain Lorana Varcern

Lorana sighed. "I don't understand why the Supreme Commander would allow this. She adores the Terran Empire."

She does not know we ever left the Royal Cresian Empire.

Lorana looked down at the plot as Varro pulled up beside Repulse and Tharon. He 'pulled' Admiral Buchanan and after a moment, even the Emperor into the mental conversation

I'm afraid, the Supreme Commander, while a very nice and very good leader, was a bit naive. I, and every other living ship, have been told about the law from the Terran Empire regarding us being captained. To my knowledge, everyone intends to follow it to the letter because we don't want trouble for our Empire. Everyone else wants captains, some even lament their lack of captains because they just want to visit. Immortalis, on the other hand, did not seen to care, nor does it seem to hold the law of the RCE, or the Terran Empire in the same regard. Had this been the old universe, I would of protested your arrest my brother, Varro moved beside his 'brother' ship and Tharon was small enough to settle comfortably under one of his 'wings.'

But Immortalis scares me now. Honestly, I think its because he considers the Terran Empire and the RCE beneath us. Unlike the rest of us, he doesn't seem to want to find a captain, nor feel the need to inform anyone where he's going. StarNight has given the living ships free reign over the RCE, as long as they report where they are going to the nearest station commander. Except for the time he visited you out at Amdromeda, he never leaves Contrast. Varro said.

But every ship wants to find a captain, its built into us. Lorana is just as good a captain as any of my other ones, why wouldn't it? Tharon asked.

"maybe its because it's not a normal living hip." Lorana said, her voice easily heard in the conversation in which the Admiral and Emperor were linked into. She pointed to the plot as the large ship jumped back in. Repulse had just about been back in the dock, though not quite when the leader had come back.

And the large ship had changed.

Immortalis's smooth white-silver hull was gone, instead it was marred with dark blue marks everywhere, too many to count, scars from battles long ago marred its hull. The largest marking on the hull was a black diamond, with four large blue slashes across it.

Immortalis was the one that killed the last leaders?! Tharon questioned in shock, obviously not wanting to believe it, but here was the evidence, plain as day.

He's got enough marks not only to account for every ship that the rouge ship killed before 'Immortalis' killed him, but enough that it accounts for every living ship put out of commission since then. Varro commented, his voice scared as the larger ship stalked forward.

It came close enough to loom over the pair of brothers, close enough to be in range of some of Home Fleet. Though when fired upon, its shields contemptuously swatted aside even the most powerful broadside.

You have made a big mistake Tharon. I tried my best over the years the be a fair and just ruler despite the fact that my own death penalty was in error. I gave you chances because I was reminded of myself when I saw you, even if I felt I never should of let the yards finish building you. I bent over backwards for you and you still managed to fuck things up. Your captains will be your downfall. Just like they were for the first leaders. Immortalis growled and Tharon assumed a position in between the 'leader' and Repulse and his brother. The size difference between the two extreme but it was obvious that Tharon was not going to back down.

Immortalis changed to his attack form and Tharon raised his orange shield again, around his captains and his brother in preparation for an attack.

Suddenly the 5,000 meter long Enforcer was back, still damaged from his fight with Tharon, ramming Immortalis away from the smaller ships and setting himself in the line of fire.

I fucking believed in you Immortalis. We created those rules together after you 'killed' the rogue ship to make things fair and just for everyone else. Instead all its allowed you to do is murder ships who probably did nothing wrong in the first place! The Enforcer snarled, If anyone here doesn't deserve to live its you.

That penalty was in error and you know it! Immortalis snapped.

You killed an entire star system with 7.94 billion citizens and a fleet yard of 50 living ships demonstrating a energy draining technique that was and never will be safe! The Enforcer replied, forming up his 'stun' weapon and firing.

It hit, but Immortalis blocked it, in the same fashion as Tharon had with an orange shield.

You taking his side was a mistake Kimerio. Immortalis growled, its attention turning back to Tharon. I knew letting the son of the first leaders live was a horrible idea.

With that he turned and what could only be described as a sonic boom in space, producing small noticeable ripples in space-time, not enough to kill anything though, and it was gone.

Kimerio, turned back from his attack form to general, its weapons' powering down, unable to chase him in his current state of damage. I am sorry for the scene my Enforcers have caused Emperor He directed that thought to the Emperor, still in the conversation loop, as he limped back under the guns of home fleet. He sounded angry, with himself, I would understand if you do not me back in your space even with a captain, a ban would be totally justified.

"I'm more worried about Immortalis coming back." Lorana said and Kimerio turned his attention to her.

If it is smart, it will not come back at all. It could be halfway across the universe by now, live a life without any interference or trouble. We do not have the resources to chase it down. But despite trying to project the idea a fair and even hand, Immortalis is vindictive and hold a grudge. If he comes back, it will be after Tharon, not anyone else. Kimerio turned his attention back to the Emperor. If you do not trust me to relay a message to the SUpreme Commander, Varro has a captain and could do it instead. Obviously the Enforcer was taking up the mantle as leader since Immortalis revealed itself to be a traitor.

"Great." Lorana said, looking over at Nathan. "Nathan I wish I had stayed behind, this never would of happened if I had stayed back with Tharon, or gone to some on star system that was a little less important."

Captain Sir Nathan Wright KCS DSO IN
HMS Repulse
Mars Orbital Fleet Yards, Sol Star System
Monday 5th February 2694

“Don’t be daft, if he was determined to come after was as he must have been to come here, to Sol itself, then Immortalis would have found us anywhere and he would have tried to take Tharon away from us regardless of where we were,” Wright said firmly to his beloved. “At least here we had back-up if we needed it, and more importantly we had witnesses that ensure that Immortalis wasn’t able to get away with what he tried to do here, and if it wasn’t for Tharon then Immortalis would still be in charge of the living ships.”

“Sir Nathan is correct, Captain.”

The two Captains looked away from each other as they heard a new, but very familiar voice, and saw the telepathic projection of a young man in his thirties appear on the bridge of the Repulse. This man was, of course, Edward V, Emperor of Terra, who had been monitoring the situation even before the situation had started to be beamed into his mind. Both this ability to monitor, and his ability to protect his physical presence away from his body was only made possible by the fact that he was the grandson of the Immortal Emperor. He obviously looked best than pleased, but it was obvious who his anger and annoyance was targeted towards, and that it wasn’t either of the two Captains or their ships.

“This would have happened one way or another, Immortalis represented a threat to all of us and now that his true colours have been unveiled at least he will not be able to exert any influence anymore, indeed my fears of something like this was why I forbid any living ships without a Captain within my Empire,” Edward said simply. “Nor do I blame you, Kimerio, it was not your intention to cause a scene any more than it was that of Tharon, Captain Wright or Captain Varcern, once you have a Captain we would be pleased to see you, and any of your kind back in the Empire, the only one I will never welcome is Immortalis.”

Edward paused.

“I will be speaking with the Supreme Commander about all this, although if she knew nothing of these events as you claim, I do not foresee any problems, although we do need to work out a defence against a rogue living ship; that ship just stood off against the entire Imperial Home Fleet, and that makes me uncomfortable to say the least,” Edward continued. “In the meantime, let’s try and get back to something like normality in this system, the excitement is over for the moment at least, I do not think that Immortalis is going to be coming back anytime soon.”

The best defense against a living ship Emperor, is another living ship. Sadly, Immortalis was our largest and while Tharon aptly demonstrated the kind of power any size ship can bend, I'm afraid that I know of no others who could be stationed here who could replicate what Tharon has done. Kimerio replied. Overwhelming force can always be used, but as you can see, it will most like cost you dearly at attempt to overwhelm such a large ship. The ship hesitated for a moment. If I can get the Supreme Commander to approve and of course your blessing, I'd like to station a living ship without a captain here on Earth, in hopes that he, she or it will find a captain here and at least give you a fighting chance in the off chance Immortalis decides to come back here.

Wouldn't that be a conflict of loyalties? Varro asked.

If the RCE and Terran Empire fall out, then yes it would be. However given that the RCE gave up what equates to godhood for the Terran Empire, I doubt that will happen. Kimerio said. Anyways, at any one time Your Majesty, there might be 2 people who can bond with any one ship. I know a few back in the RCE who have been trying real hard and can't seem find a captain to save their life despite trying to get people on board to check them. If one of those is a grown person here in the Terran Empire and the other is a child still going to school, who do you think would be better for the ship? Anyways, you want a defense against a living ship, having one at your disposal would be your best bet. if only to look it over to see what you can do to it.

Lorana looked back at the large ship, what a difference. Kimerio was much better then Immortalis , he just sounded... realer she guessed.

Oh and Tharon? Kimerio turned to face the small ship, who came forward, face to face with the other ship.

What is it Kimerio? He asked. the large ship didn't reply for a minute before he moved forward and touched the smaller ship. Along his right side 15 tally marks, 12 black, 3 red appeared and then faded. His hull once gain its pristine white-silver. Tharon actually circled around himself as though trying to see something he couldn't. You got rid of my marks?!

Its the least I could do.

“That would be acceptable, as long as you vouch for the good behaviour of whichever ship you station here, and we’ll do our best to cycle as many officers through the ship as possible to see if it can’t find a Captain,” Edward replied with a nod. “Please do not take this personally, but after what happened if it is at all possible I would prefer it if you were able to send a Captained ship to escort the other one here, and to keep watch over it, if not a Cresian Naval Warship would be acceptable.”

Edward nodded his approval at the decision to remove Tharon’s marks and the exchange between the two ships. This new leader for the living ships certainly did seem better from what Edward had known about Immortalis. Perhaps at least part of it was the fact that, unlike Immortalis, this new ship was prepared to engage fully with the Terran Empire; something that was always going to encourage Edward to look favourably upon him. But also at least partially the simple fact that he was magnanimous and forgiving, two traits that a leader needed as much as they needed an firm hand and an iron will. It was odd passing judgement upon a living machine (such as they were), however it was the only way that Edward could think to sum up what he was seeing and feeling.

“I think this is going to be a good arrangement going forwards, I at least am satisfied,” Edward added, turning to the two Captains with a mischievous smile. “Now, you two, before you go swanning off back to Andromeda, I would very much appreciate it if you could come to Buckingham Palace as soon as is convenient.”

“Of course, Your Imperial Majesty,” Wright replied with a nod, knowing that when your Emperor told you to come as soon as was convenient, it effectively meant that you should be there as fast as physically possible. “We’ll be there within the hour.”

Kimerio gave an easily felt mental nod. i know just who to send out, though fair warning so far only some of the smaller ships have captains. So while I'll be sending one of my larger ships out here, a smaller ship with a captain will be escorting. Though first i need to rest, I took quite the beating.

Tharon's emotions easily showed he would be blushing had he'd been human and Varro chuckled.

you never cease to amaze me brother.

Lorana smiled at the scene she could see through her eyes, through Tharon's vision. She turned to Nathan with a nervous grin, fluffing up her feathers.

Captain Sir Nathan Wright KCS DSO IN
HMS Repulse
Mars Orbital Fleet Yards, Sol Star System
Monday 5th February 2694

“I think that would probably be a good idea, my dear, we have just been summoned to meet an Emperor here, ” Wright commented with a smile, just a hint of a friendly tease in his voice, before turning to Lieutenant Blackwell. “Please arrange for a shuttle to be prepared to take us down to Buckingham Palace in thirty minutes, and another ready immediately to take Captain Varcern to Tharon to get her uniform.”

With the preparations underway Wright and Lorana parted ways for a short time to get ready for their Royal Engagement. As he had indicated to Lorana, given that they were meeting none other than the Emperor himself only the most formal uniform was appropriate, and as such his steward had already pulled out his No.1A Full Dress White uniform. The Full Dress White uniform was the most formal of all the uniforms worn by the Imperial Navy; consisting of a high-collared white jacket with golden shoulder rank boards, full-sized betels worn on the left breast, sharply creased white trousers and white non-polished parade shoes, worn with white gloves and a full ceremonial sword. In addition to his medals, which aside from campaign medals and the victory medal from the Hegemony War included his Distinguished Service Order, he wore the distinctive golden warfare qualification badge, specifically that of a Space Warfare Officer. Between himself and his steward they checked over his uniform to make sure that he was properly presented, after all as formal as the Full Dress Whites worked they required a great deal of preparation to ensure they were presented properly, and given who they were meeting Wright wanted his uniform to be beyond reproach.

“I think we’re ready, Sir,” Chief Petty Officer Thomas Gold commented as he stood back and looked critically at his Captain.

“I agree,’ Wright nodded, looking at his reflection in the mirror as he pulled on his gloves. “My cap?”

“Right here, Sir,” CPO Gold replied, scooping up the peaked cap in question and handed it over. “Ready to go? Your shuttle should be ready by now.”

Wright nodded and settled his cap onto his head before heading for the door, making sure to keep a firm grip on the hill of his sword to prevent it getting trapped or caught anywhere on the way through the ship. He could tell from some of their expressions that his crew were most bemused to see their Captain in Full Dress Whites, however no one said anything of course as they braced against the side of the corridor to allow him easy access past. It didn’t take him long to arrive on the flight deck, just in time to watch as Lorana’s shuttle returned from Tharon ready for an Imperial shuttle to take them down to London.

Lorana watched as her steward went about fixing the medals on her uniform. Her flashy black and gold uniform gleamed in the light, the golden seams and rank insignia. Of course she still only had a few medals, given her very sudden elevation to captain this was unsurprising. Still it looked sharp, and unlike her other uniforms, she had a dress sword and one other optional piece she didn't want to put on. She reached up as her steward went to fetch her white beret to fix the Navy Star medal hanging around her neck.

So when she heard the distinctive rustle of chain jewelry, She fluffed up her feathers and turned around to glare at her steward. "I am not putting that on."

"Captain, you are going to see the Emperor. You need to look your best and these make your wings look nice. Anyways it compliments the uniform and you never wear it." Her steward said and she continued to glare at him. He returned her look levelly and after a few moments she turned back around and flared out her wings, grumbling about 'mother henning stewards'. Her steward went about securing the golden jewelry with a pleased smile, the thing gold chain accenting her black feathers perfectly. He then put her beret on her head and studied her.

"You look wonderful Ma'am."

"Thanks." She said dryly, a hand resting on her dress sword. "I know you like torturing me with this monkey suit."

"No I don't Ma'am." Her steward said oh-so-respectfully and she mentally rolled her eyes as she made her way out of the room and back to the shuttle.

As she stepped down onto the deck of Repulse she smiled as she saw her bondmate in full uniform. It was a stunning uniform.

Even if it was white.

She walked over with a bit of a mischievous smile and reached forward to brush off a invisible piece of dust.

"Going to meet the Emperor and you still let dust settle on such a handsome uniform? I had higher hopes for you Captain."

“I will have you know, Captain Varcern, that there is no spec of dust to be found aboard any warship under my command, any that do appear are promptly identified and speedily removed,” Wright replied with a teasing smugness. “Unlike some of us, I take great pride in the way my ship is turned out, regardless of how many crew I may have aboard at any given time.”

Wright offered her his arm with a smile, gesturing to the shuttle with the other. A pair of Imperial Marines, likewise in full dress uniforms, were present to render appropriate honours to both Captains as they boarded and disembarked the craft; no Marine Detachment Commander worth his salt would pass up the opportunity to have some of his Marines ‘invade’ the Army-heavy presence around Buckingham Palace. Throughout the years of the Hegemony War the Imperial Marines and the Imperial Army had fought alongside each other many times and had a great del of respect for each other; however none of that changed the traditional rivalry that existed between the Army and the Marines, one which commanders at all levels seemed more than happy to encourage, safe in the knowledge that the professionals of both services would prevent it from ever being a problem. As the two Captains approached the two Marines rendered crisp salute, which Wright returned with his unencumbered right arm, nodding his thanks as they climbed the ramp.

“Buckingham Palace please, pilot,” Wright called with a slight smile. “It doesn’t do to keep the Emperor waiting!”

Nathan I resent that slight against my cleanliness. Tharon replied to him.

Lorana smiled.

What did she do to deserve him? Not much. Hard to believe they started out hating each other.

As they flew down to Buckingham's Palace, she wondered what the Emperor would want. He didn't sound angry, but he hadn't said a word about why.

She was still nervous. After all this was the leader of the Terran Empire.

Buckingham Palace, London
Earth, Sol Star System
Monday 5th February 2694

“I don’t know any more than you do, unfortunately,” Wright replied with a slight smile. “I wouldn’t worry, the Emperor has a reputation for doing things like this.”

A brief FTL Jump and the shuttle had crossed the distance between Mars and Earth in the blink of an eye and was angling downwards towards the blue-green orb of Earth; a sight that Wright had not seen since being assigned to Andromeda, and one that warmed his heart. It may not be his home, but Earth was the Capital of the Empire and the Birthplace of Humanity, so it held a special place in his heart; especially considering how much blood had been spilt to reclaim it from the enemy that had occupied it and oppressed its population for so long. They were intercepted in orbit by a pair of Spitfire-II Aerospace Superiority Fighters which formed on their wing to escort them safely to Buckingham Palace, although given their destination this was far more likely to be in the event that they needed to be shot down than they they needed protection from any sort of outside force. It wasn’t long before they were speeding over the rolling green fields of England until they came up on the sprawling metropolis of London which had spread across a significant part of the South East of England over the centuries.

The Themes snaked beneath them as they overflew Whitehall, the seat of the Imperial Government, rapidly replaced by Hyde Park until they began their descent to a landing on the lawn of Buckingham Palace. The two Imperial Marines were the first to disembark, doing so with drill-square precision, specifically for the benefit of the Coldstream Guardsmen who were currently mounting the Emperor’s Guard at Buckingham Palace. The two Captains disembarked next, returning the salute of the two Marines as they stepped forwards, met by the Emperor’s Permanent Equerry, a Lieutenant Colonel from the Imperial Army, who salute them crisply and welcomed them to Buckingham Palace and began to guide them into the building and through the ornate corridors until they reached the Throne Room, which was the obvious location for an Audience with the Emperor. As they walked forwards towards the Throne they are able to identify the three figures standing by the Throne, and of course the man sat upon it.

Emperor Edward V sat comfortably upon his Throne, stood immediately at his left hand was his wife; Empress Jennifer, both the Imperial Couple were in formal civilian clothes, obviously of the highest workmanship and looked absolutely stunning. The Empress was sister of the man stood on the Emperor’s right hand, Lord High Admiral The Highlord VonGrippen, Duke of Geldan and Warlord of the Terran Empire; Darien Cain, who was wearing military uniform, with the distinctive insignia of two thick golden stripes on his sleeves marking him as holding the six-star rank of Lord High Admiral. The fourth man wore Naval Uniform as well, with the rank insignia of an Admiral of the Fleet, Sir William Carter, the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Navy, a man who was outranked only by the Lord High Admiral.

“Captains, thank you for making it so quickly,” Emperor Edward said casually, as if they had had any choice. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve asked you here.”

“The thought had crossed my mind, Your Imperial Majesty,” Wright replied formally.

“Well, I have been discussing the situation in Andromeda with these two fine gentlemen here, as well as consulting the Highlord Council in order to gain a consensus on how best to proceed, given your initiate involvement in the Expedition, I wanted to brief you personally how how things are going to proceed going forwards,” Edward nodded. “In short it is our decision that the Expedition has to continue, given the sociopolitical nature of Asgar Sovereignty we see it as likely that any withdrawal will be a sign of weakness, and given that they view us as heretics it seems likely that they would attempt to follow us back to this Galaxy and attempt to destroy us here, we feel that our best bet at fending them off is by a forward base in Andromeda.”

Edward paused and glanced at Darien.

“As such we’re going to start working up towards conducting a major campaign against the Asgar, and within two years we hope to station a newly-raised Seventh Fleet in the Andromeda Galaxy for that purpose, in the meantime however you and others we station out there are going to be tasked with harassing the enemy and gathering as much intelligence as possible,” The Warlord said. “In order to both accomplish this, and to protect Unity Colony, we are significantly strengthening the Unity Squadron, posting a full Battle Squadron of Battleships, plus a suitable screen and scouting element, to Andromeda.”

Sir William picked up the ball and continued.

“As such we are relieving you of your command of the Repulse, and assigning you to command the Flagship of this new Battle Squadron, Flag Officer to be determined, HMS Salamis, your job as Flag Captain will be to use your experience in Andromeda to keep this new Flag Officer up to speed on what to expect,” Sir William instructed. “Given your Court-Martial we cannot justify promoting you to flag rank at this time, however we intend to assign a Flag Officer who, aside from being more than competent in their own right, knows when to accept advice and guidance from those with subject matter experience, so that’ll have to do us for now.”

“You’re to take command of the Salamis immediately, she’s already completed space trials and passed FOST last week under her Executive Officer, so you’ve got a hell of a command team already assembled, as we need many of your senior officers for new postings of their own,” The Warlord added. “The Highlord Council has also decided that the public is to be informed with regards to the Andromeda Expedition, the losses we suffered at the Pearl Nebula, combined with the forces we intend to station there, mean that we can really keep it a secret anymore, so you shouldn’t have any issues with personnel or supplies.”

“Now, with business out of the way, I get to do the fun part of my job,” Edward commented with a smile. “Based on Admiral Harrington’s after action report, your two ships were standing off, pretty much alone, against and entire Asgar invasion fleet.”

“There was little else we could do, Your Imperial Majesty,” Wright replied. “We had the Colony to our backs, our only option would have been to withdraw and leave the planet to the mercy of the Asgar.”

“Perhaps, but your own logs indicate that you were intending to hold off the enemy long enough for the colony to safely evacuate, and your conduct to that point in the battle certainly indicates that was your intent, and your bravery in standing, essentially alone, against the enemy deserves recognition,” Edward said firmly. “As such it is my great pleasure to bestow upon both of you, the Military Cross, in recognition of your stalwart stand against significant odds to discharge your responsibility to protect the Colony, in addition, Captain Wright, I bestow upon you the honorary title of Colonel of Marines, with all the associated privileges of that title.”

“I… thank you, your Imperial Majesty,” Wright said, a little taken aback, but nodding his appreciation as the Emperor stood and approached to pin both their new medals onto their uniforms. “It is a great honour, Sire.”

Lorana had to agree with their assessment of the Asgar. They were too warlike and if they withdrew and the Asgar followed... All hell would break loose.

She could barely imagine what that war would be like. Bloody and brutal. Not to mention the billions of citizens at risk from stuff like the undead virus.

She was so distracted by the dark thought when the Emperor announced their new awards. She was surprised. She somewhat wanted to protest, she'd just been doing her duty. But Lorana didn't. She felt way too junior to be arguing with an Emperor.

Captain Sir Nathan Wright KCS DSO MC IN
Buckingham Palace, London
Earth, Sol Star System
Monday 5th February 2694

“It’s the mark of a smart officer not to argue with an Emperor,” Edward commented with a twinkle in his eye.

“Unless you’ve played an integral role in bringing back his Empire from the dead,” Empress Jennifer commented with a wry smile and a glance at her brother, Warlord Cain. “Then you can just about get away with it, as my dear brother likes to demonstrate oh so often.”

“Indeed,” Edward agreed dryly. “Well, Captains, I won’t keep you any longer, fair winds to you both.”

With that the two Captains backed away from the Throne; you didn’t turn your back on an Emperor, until Edward stood up and turned his back on them as he exited the Throne Room through another door. Once the Emperor was gone the turned and were guided promptly from the Throne Room and back through Buckingham Palace. The shuttle that had brought them down here had been replaced by one from HMS Salamis, which would take them directly to Wright’s new command where he would have to quickly get acquainted with his new command staff before they headed back out to Andromeda. Whether they liked it or not it seemed that their fates were going to be intimately linked with the success or failure of the Expedition; and given everything and everyone that was relying upon them it was a heavy weight to say the least; but one that both of them had been feeling in one way or another for the past two years. Fortunately with the general public being informed about what had happened and the threat that they faced it seemed likely that they wouldn’t have to worry about maintaining the strength to protect the system; if they needed additional ships they could openly be sent from any of the other Fleets in the Imperial Navy, or indeed the Royal Cottish Navy, without the need for secrecy.

Of course there was also the fact that now they weren’t going to have to hide their relationship. Sure, they couldn’t really afford to flaunt it publicly, or at least not excessively so, but they would not have to sneak around hiding it from everyone, and indeed they would, when the time was right, be able to get married and make their bond ‘official’ in the eyes of the Terran Empire at least. That they would be able to take that comfort from each other made Wright feel a whole lot better about facing the might of the Asgar; the simple fact that he wouldn’t have to do so alone.

“if you keep collecting medals at this rate, my love, you’ll be rivalling Highlady Harrington or Sub-Commander Larson before too long,” Wright teased gently as they climbed aboard the Imperial Shuttle, apparently ignoring the fact that he himself was gathering an impressive array of medals. “Although, on balance, let’s hope that the Asgar don’t furnish us with an opportunity to be awarded anymore for as long as possible, preferably never.”

At the Emperor's comment to her, what she had assumed had been private, thoughts she looked very much like she wanted to sink into the floor, she even blushed a little and stayed steadfastly silent as they left the Throne Room. It was only once they were aboard the shuttle she decided she had a voice again to speak.

"If I collect as many awards, medals and titles as either of those two, please remind me to retire." She said as she studied her newest medal. "Stayr I look up to both of them, they are great commanders both of them, but I don't like the price you have to pay to get those titles." Lorana looked over at Nathan. "You've already got an impressive set yourself Sir Nathan, if anyone here is going to turn out like Highlady Harrington, its you."

She paused for a moment. "I'm kind of glad that you didn't get promoted to Admiral though. I know you deserve it, you've certainly proved you have the skill, but I'd feel a little left out."

Lorana, you'll get promoted in time don't you worry. Tharon said and Lorana shrugged, obviously a touchy subject.

"Even with a war, the Admiralty has put an age cap on the flag ranks of 100 years for exceptional individuals to deal with the fact that the RCE is supposed to be at peace right now. That's another 80 something years for me and nearly 1/3 of Nathan's lifespan." She said before she clapped a hand over her mouth. She hadn't meant to say the last part out loud.

With good care and no accidents, Nathan would live to be around 300 Earth years old, a flash in the pan compared to her lofty 3,500 Cresian Years(around 42,000 Earth years, and that was after it was shortened due to the fact that military telepathic training tended to shave around half a Cresians life span off). Of course the talk of promotions (or lack there of) had brought in the thought of when after such a court martial he could be promoted.

And of course her mind had insisted to remind her that even with the delay his saving of her had caused in his career, his life would be over and done with while she'd still be a Commodore, not even an Admiral like any good officer wanted to be. And while she was at it, her thoughts decided to dig up the jem that while Prolong treatment had extended the RCE's humans lives to upwards of 900, the same treatment had only produced projected spans of 300 in Terrans. Despite efforts to get around it, no one had been able to get past that for some reason. It seemed to her extremely unfair that such a kind, intelligent man she'd fallen for would only live till she was a young adult

Tharon seemed unnaturally silent, running through the same math Lorana had already done. You could feel him flinch as he realized exactly how heartbreaking those numbers were, how unfair they seemed.

Nathan didn’t say anything at first; it was of course something that he had considered before, and likely would again, and he knew that she had the worst of it. He could, and would if the Universe was kind, get to spend his entire life with her, whereas she would only get to spend a portion, and a small one at that, of hers with him. It was simple biology; even if they were able to get the prolong treatment more effective before Nathan died, which wasn’t outside the realms of possibility given the lifespan he could now expect to enjoy, he would still die thousands and thousands of years before she did and there was precious little that anyone could do about that. He had wondered, more than once whether or not it had been fair of him to embark upon a relationship with someone who, despite being younger than him (by any reckoning), would outlive him so significantly. Was it fair of him to ask her to commit to a relationship in which it was more likely than not that she would lose him rather than the other way around, and to enforce that loss upon her.

And yet the crux of the matter was that he loved her, and she loved him; their bond was proof enough of that if they needed anything other than the obvious love and affection they shared. He could no more have rejected her or dissuaded their relationship than he could chopped off one of his own limbs (again), and he knew that she felt the same way. And he was more than prepared to sacrifice for their relationship, for her and their love. He had risked his career and been court-martialled for her, and didn’t regret it for a second. In the post-Prolong era, the standard time in-grade for a Captain in the Imperial Navy was a minimum of twelve years; although that could be shortened for particularly stellar service, as it likely would have been in Nathan’s case (all things considered), however his Court-Martial had effectively meant that his chances of being promoted ‘below the zone’, as any promotion before the minimum time in grade was known, was slim to say the least. He had held the rank of Captain for just over three years now, the best he could hope for was maybe another four or five years, however the full additional years was not outside the realms of possibility.

But truth be told he didn’t much care; he had gladly risked his life, his ship and his career to save her life, and would do so willingly again; besides it wasn’t like being an Imperial Navy Captain was exactly the least attractive prospect to spend the next decade or so of his life; as long as he had her by his side.

Nathan reached over and put his arm around Lorana and, despite the stiff uniforms they were both wearing, pulled her close to him, eventually resting his chin atop her head as he held her close to his chest; it wasn’t all that often that he got to do that to her, given the difference in height.

“You hear that?” Nathan asked softly. “It’s beating for you.”

Nathan paused to let that sink in.

“As long as my heart is beating it will beat for you, and if all goes well it will continue to keep beating for at least the next three hundred years, as short as that might be in your lifespan, doesn’t mean that we don’t get to share those years, and every month, week, day hour and minute that they are made up of together,” Nathan continued. “We don’t know what is going to happen between now and then, we are both naval officers fighting a war here; so we live every second as if its our last, as if every moment we spend together, every night we share, every kiss we exchange is our last, and we make the most of the time we have together, for they’ll never come again.”

Nathan reached down and gently tipped her head up with his fingers and looked down at her.

“I love you, Lorana Varcern,” Nathan said simply, leaning down and kissing her deeply.

Lorana didn't have the words to respond to that. She didn't want him to die. And of course given they were both naval officers their careers would and have put them in the line of fire.

But despite not knowing what to say, his words comforted her more then she expected. She would savor every moment with him. It hurt to think that one day she would be without him, but that was still a while off.

After they finished the kiss, Lorana smiled. "I love you too Nathan Wright. "

Captain Sir Nathan Wright KCS DSO MC IN
HMS Salamis BB-714
Earth, Sol Star System
Monday 5th February 2694

Wright stroked her cheek lovingly and kissed her again.

Before too long the pilot’s called back from the cockpit to announce that they were approaching the Salamis. Wright glanced down at his companion and jerked his head towards the cockpit and pulled her forwards towards the cockpit to get their first view of his new ship. The Trafalgar-Class Battleship had been in service since 2686 and served as the backbone of the Navy’s capital ship fleet, and had already proven themselves in combat during the waning years of the Hegemony War. The Trafalgar-Class Battleships follows much of the design lines of the Bastion-Class Dreadnought, albeit on a much smaller scale, as the gap between Dreadnoughts and Battleships had always been more substantial than between Battleships and Battlecruisers, by design. The Trafalgar-Class also follows its bigger cousin in terms of its armament scheme. It is the second Imperial Warship to mount the powerful new Zero Point Bore as its primary weapon, which are mounted in two duel turrets amidships on the dorsal hull, with her secondary armament of heavy and regular quantum disruption beams covering the forward and aft aspects, and a tertiary armament of fusion pulse cannons covering the flanks.

All told, despite the relatively small size increase, the Salamis was a significant improvement in terms of capability of the Repulse. Wright would miss his trusty Battlecruiser, but he knew that the Salamis would serve him well in the months to come, particularly if he had to fight the Asgar, which seemed likely. As they cruised alongside the ship Wright explained the name of the ship.

“She’s named for a major naval battle in the Ancient Period on Earth between the Greek City States and the Persian Empire under Xerxes; an outnumbered Greek force was able to overwhelm the Persians by a good use of battle site and tactics,” Wright explained, recalling his Naval History classes. “By defeating the Persians, the Greeks were able to prevent a Persian conquest of Europe, and the destruction of Western Civilisation in its infancy, the Battle of Salamis was one of the most decisive and long-reaching victories in human history.”

Soon enough they were coming in for a landing in the flight deck of the Salamis where a significant welcoming committee was waiting for them; a standard Marine Honour Guard and side part, as well as senior officers and a number of spare hands. Wright secured his peaked cap back upon his head and strode for the ramp.

“Commanding Officer, Salamis, Arriving.”

Wright stepped down onto the deck of his new ship and returned the salute of the side part as the Bosun’s Call piped the side to announce his arrival. He continued forwards towards his executive officer and returned that salute as well. As he did so he approved of the Admiralty’s choice of his XO; Commander Rebecca Wilson, protege of Highlady Harrington herself and one of the most respected officers in the service on the basis of her own reputation. Not to mention that bore an even more impressive array of medals than he himself did, although one look at her eyes told him that she bore their cost as heavily as any of them.

“Permission to come aboard, Ma’am,” Wright said formally.

“Permission granted, Sir,” Commander Wilson replied, equally formally. “Welcome aboard, Captain.”

Wright nodded and gestured for her to lead the way. It didn’t take them long to reach a turbo lift which ferried them promptly to the bridge, bigger than the one found aboard Repulse, onto which Wright stepped for the first time. After a brief glance around he stepped up to stand behind the command chair and held out a tablet, which the Emperor’s Equerry had given to him before he departed, accessed the appropriate file and began to read.

"From: Admiral Dame Laura Anderson, Chief of Naval Personnel, Imperial Navy, to Captain Sir Nathan Wright, Imperial Navy, Sir: You are hereby directed and required to proceed aboard His Majesty’s Starship Salamis, BB-714, there to take upon yourself the duties and responsibilities of commanding officer in the service of the Crown. Fail not in this charge at your peril. By Order of Admiral of the Fleet Sir William Carter, Supreme Commander of the Imperial Navy, for His Imperial Majesty the Emperor.”

Wright turned to Commander Wilson.

“I relieve you, Commander.”

“I stand relieved, Captain,” Commander Wilson nodded. “Orders, Sir?”

“Prepare for departure, I want to get underway by 0900hrs tomorrow morning,” Wright ordered firmly. “I’ll be taking a look at my new command, please arrange to have my gear brought over from Repulse.”

“Aye, Sir.”

With that Commander Wilson turned away to get on with her orders leaving Wright and Lorana to exit the bridge and soon enough they were alone again in the turbolift.

Lorana was, of course impressed by the new ship. Her dark thoughts banished as she took in everything, from the brief Earth history lesson (She'd have to ask who the Greeks were , or look it up, she didn't remember who they were. Earth history was a bit spotty at the RCE Naval Academy), to the crew. Nathan deserved it and as he formally took command by reading the letter from his Admiralty Though she noted, they used tablets. the RCN used old-fashioned parchment for that formality, where that tradition had come from she had no idea either, but it seemed classier, not to mention better fitting the feel of the 'fail not in this charge at your peril' business.

She could sense Tharon's curiosity as he crept closer to the battleship. Now Repulse, while still being larger then Tharon, had still been small enough that the two could be considered the same class. (At least in RCE eyes, since the power and weapons in a living ship made up for the lack of length.) Now Tharon was, technically, outclassed. The smaller ship could easily hide in Salamis's shadow, though even with the Zero Point Bore weapons, Tharon could, in theory, easily defeat it.

Good thing were both on the same side. Tharon
said to her with a chuckle. An impressive ship, though I will miss Repulse, her AI was always quite nice to me.

Lorana nodded, leaving her ship to continuing poking around the larger ship, probably annoying whoever would have to shut off the alarms once he got too close.

Once they entered the lift she looked over to him and despite the gold accent jewelry on her wings, reached out with one and pulled him closer to her, sort of keeping her wing lightly around him. "First off, what a lovely ship you now have and what feels like nice crew. Secondly, I don't think I've had time yet to say how handsome you are in that uniform Sir Nathan."

“She is a remarkable ship isn’t she, Tharon, but also very different from Repulse, she’s a ship of the line rather than than an up-jumped cruiser, one look at her lines is enough to tell you that, if the weapons didn’t give it away,” Wright ‘replied’ to Tharon with a smile. “You know the entire class nearly didn’t come about, there was a lot of debate at the height of the Hegemony War as to whether the Navy should bother with battleships, instead using those resources to build more Dreadnoughts, but I think it was the right decision.”

The debate had raged for months at the Admiralty, as those in favour of more Dreadnoughts pointed out that, with the resources ear-marked for battleship production, they could have produced at least four more battle squadrons worth of Dreadnoughts. The Battleship proponents had argued that in place of those four dreadnought squadrons they had been able to put into space thirty-four battle squadrons of Battleships, and whilst the ship’s might be individually less powerful the sheer numbers they had been able to put out meant that ships of the line could be stationed in far more places, particularly as there were colonies and operations and other commitments that simply didn’t require a squadron of Dreadnoughts; a Battleship Squadron was ideally suited to protect a frontier colony in a threat-light environment, whereas a battle squadron of Dreadnoughts would have been wasted. In short the use of battleships enabled the Imperial Navy to hedge its bets; keeping its core of powerful dreadnoughts concentrated either defensively or into offensive battle fleets. It was this reasoning, and the support of the Imperial Warlord, that had carried the day and the performance of the Battleship in the last two years of the Hegemony War had certainly vindicated the battleship supporters.

Once the decision had been made to build a new class of Battleships the job of designing the damn thing had fallen to a crack team of designers under the general guidance of Highlady Harrington herself, who had of course headed up Project Fearless which had produced for the empire its first Strike Cruisers, which played a vital role in breaking the long stalemate that had held firm in the middle years of the war. The ship that they had come out with was evolutionary, she didn’t break any particularly new ground, however it was a solid design that had opened the gap back up between the Battlecruiser and the Battleship, and provided the Imperial Navy with a ship of the line capable of holding its own without Dreadnought support.

Wright found his attention brought firmly back to the moment when Lorana puled him close to her. He smiled and reached up to remove his peaked cap, not wanting that to get in the way.

“Why thank you, Captain Varcern,” Wright smiled wryly. “Well, you know what they say about naval officers in white uniforms…”

"Being that I'm a Cresian, no I don't know what people say about naval officers in white uniforms, after all, I wear a much sharper black uniform." Lorana paused for a moment, to make sure she could feel that the lift wasn't going to be interrupted in its travel, before she wrapped her wing a bit tighter around him to bring him a little closer.

"The saying wouldn't have anything to do about said officer managing to attract the opposite sex now would it?" She leaned down and gave him a kiss. "Because it certainly is rather dashing, no matter how much I jibe at you for having dust on your uniform." She couldn't help it, with all dark thoughts banished from her mind for now, a new ship for Nathan, living through a fight with a traitorous living ship, getting awards from the Emperor, lets just say its was an exciting day for everyone. Not to mention the fact that no matter how much she might say her uniform was better or 'complain' about how 'dirty' his uniform was, Nathan was a rather attractive man.

And he was all hers. At least she could be very selfish about that. Since humans liked to be monogamous and all, so she never had to share him.

“Something like that,” Wright grinned.

A quick glance at the control panel on the lift confirmed that it wasn’t going anywhere, and they were unlikely to be interrupted, and Wright was more than happy to return the kiss she bestowed upon him with equal eagerness. It had indeed been a very exciting and busy day to say the least; so much had happened in the space of a few hours it was hard to believe, but then again it wasn’t exactly like such things didn’t happen. As such he gave himself into the embrace, kissing her deeply and allowing his hands to wander freely over her body.

Lorana enjoyed his touch and kiss, given this small private time away from the new crew and the Nathan's probably soon to be busy schedule. They might not need to hide it anymore, but they weren't going to flaunt it. Usually she would wait til they were safe away in one of their cabins, but this was as private as any other place, as long as they stopped before the lift hatch opened. She was too excited, maybe it was just her hormones, who knew, young Cresians could be strange.

As such she didn't really here the tone announcing the lifts arrival at their destination.

Captains might want to compose themselves. Tharon said as a warning and she pulled back from her partner in disappointment, noticing that, yes they had arrived, after a second to straighten everything she glanced backwards at her wings. The feathers and golden chain jewelry were still in place, she noticed they were slightly stiff. Not enough that they were flared far out, but enough to notice. Sometimes she hated her own biology. Human females got off so easy. She determinedly snapped her black wings to her back as the hatch finally opened. "Lead the way Captain." She said.

“Good afternoon, Captain.”

“Good Afternoon, Chief,” Wright replied, nodding his head to the Chief Petty Officer who was waiting to go into the lift as they were departing, he then glanced at Lorana once they were out of ear shot. “I was going to suggest a tour, but I think checking out my cabin might be a better idea right now.”

With a cheeky smirk Wright led the way through the corridors, following the outwardly incomprehensible series of coloured lines on the bulkheads that directed the way to various parts of the ship; the particular one they were following would take them to Officer Country, where Wright’s main Cabin was located. All things considered it didn’t take them long, their strides were both long and the distance from where the turbolift had deposited them to the Captain’s Cabin was not all that far. As they rounded the last corner they were met by the sight of an Imperial Marine, a Corporal by his rank insignia, standing post outside of the Captain's Cabin. It was protocol, and tradition, that a Captain have a Marine Sentry, and it stood to reason that the easiest way for said sentry to link up with his Captain was to wait for him at his Cabin, rather than chasing him around the ship looking for him. Once upon a time it had only been a requirement during wartime, however with the discovery of propylons, and other similar technology, it had been deemed necessary for the Captain to have a full-time bodyguard to ensure his (or her) safety. The eagle-eyed Marine spotted them coming of course and snapped to attention, bringing his right hand up to the brim of his beret as he saluted crisply.

“Captain, Sir, I am Corporal Matthew Woodman, I am your primary Marine Sentry, my relief during night hours will be Corporal Alex Garcia,” The Marine reported formally. “The Detachment Commander informed us of your appointment as a Colonel of Marines… if I may offer my congratulations, Sir.”

“Thank You, Corporal,” Wright replied, returning the salute. “I’ll be in my cabin.”

“Very good, Sir,” Corporal Woodman nodded, activating the switch to open the doors.

Wright nodded himself and the two Captains entered the cabin. It was larger than his cabin had been aboard the Repulse, perhaps unsurprising given that the ship itself was bigger, but it was as well acquainted as any Captain’s Cabin in the Imperial Navy. The unique artwork was a large oil painting, presumably of the Battle of Salamis. Once they were alone, Wright turned back to Lorana with an impish grin.

“So… where were we?”

Lorana took a moment to sweep the white beret off her head, the prospect of getting some alone time alone had made her wings stiffen right back out the second they were alone. (Oh the trials of being Cresian, while she was sure only a few people would understand what such things would mean (after all it could have multiple meanings), it was still embarrassing.) "I believe Sir Nathan," She said with a small smile. "We were somewhere near the point of taking the handsome uniforms off." Now her... excitement didn't work in her favor and she couldn't reach the clasp that would allow her to take off the wing jewelry adorning her wings.

"I'm going to need your help getting the jewelry off though." She said, turning so he could see the clasp holding the golden chain to her wings.

Wright smiled as she turned to allow him to help her remove her wing ornamentation and as he considered how best to do so he reached up to his own collar and began to undo the row of ornate golden buttons that lined his uniform, giving him more room to breath and, more importantly, making it possible for the garment to be discarded. He reached up to begin removing the jewellery from her wings, gently caressing them as he did so, knowing the effect that would likely have upon her, being careful not to hurt here whilst removing them. Once he had removed them he shrugged off his uniform, taking only a moment to array it properly onto the back of his sofa to ensure that it wouldn’t be ruined by being slung onto the floor; Full Dress Whites had a tendency to be damaged easily and had to be treated with the upmost care, even when you had other things on your mind. Once he had made certain that his uniform was taken care of he turned back to Lorana and turned his full attention on her, kissing her passionately and resuming the roaming of his hands all over her body.

Lorana was more then glad to get rid of her uniform, laying it out carefully and making sure to place the Navy Star somewhere it wouldn't be damaged before she turned back to Nathan.

With his captains currently occupied, Tharon settled into the shadow of the battleship. What a day this had been. He 'glanced' over at Kimerio resting in orbit, the scars on his hull already starting to stitch and mend. He wondered if Immortalis would come back, he shivered i fear at the thought. But he quickly banished the thought. He would not interrupt them.
