Description: The Meridian Rebellion in the Martian Conglomerate that sparked the 'Great War', a disastrous civil conflict, has finally come to a close after nearly five years of fighting. While the Conglomerate secured a Pyrrhic victory against the rebellion and ended the conflict, the toll was too great for the already declining empire. Another war that was already being fought against the Nyteborne ended during the conflict when all of the Rsai Expanse, Martian colonies in Gamma, were overrun by the aggressor, thus ending Martian presence in that quadrant entirely.
Following the war, the nation has been undergoing 'Reconstruction' mandated by its allies. Former Grand Admiral Nerys Harlow was proclaimed the rightful successor and the nation's first Empress by the UIK. With the original government of the former Martian Conglomerate having completely collapsed, the new post-war administration is slowly getting off the ground to deal with the war's aftermath.
A refugee crisis has begun as millions were displaced by the successful Nyteborne invasion within Gamma. These refugees have sought shelter within the empire's interior, further straining the nation's resources. A Cold War now exists between the new Martian Empire and its rebellious counterpart in Delta, the also weakened Meridian Empire.
Unemployment and crime are on the rise in the empire as the economy reels from the conflict and the massive market shocks, spurred on by a crippled Martian navy and major territory losses that have reduced the nation's size down by two-thirds. Once spanning all four quadrants, the new empire has been left with half its territory in Delta, and some holdings in the Reaches. The Nalar Expanse was lost following the end of the conflict, with a weakened fleet and being stretched too thin to adequately defend the region, the Martians ceded the territory to the Phoenix Domain.

Description: The Kingdom of the Franks recently launched a large-scale assault, involving thousands of warships, on the Imperial System of Legacy and the Imperial Colony System of Texcoco. The few IJN ships defending Texcoco have already been dispersed and the Franks have landed ground forces on the planet, which is home to one of the few populations of felidaens left in the Jade Empire.
A far larger fleet has assaulted Legacy System, but the combined IJN Fleets present under the command of Flag Admiral Garcia are currently driving back the besieging forces. These acts of aggression directly contravene the Treaty of Yamsai which forbade the Kingdom of the Franks to remilitarize or to engage in acts of aggression against the Nalydyan Empire and her allies, and so a major campaign has been launched by the Nalydyan Empire with the objective of conquering the Frankish capitol system of Neustria.
Potential Greater Impact(s): This conflict is rapidly threatening to develop into a total war between several major powers. The Kingdom of the Franks have attacked the Jade Empire multiple times in recent history and it is unlikely that any of the involved parties will be content with a ceasefire at this point in time.

Description: The Ordean Empire has just ended it's period of isolation from the wider galactic community after successfully acquiring FTL power plant technology from alien artifacts found in the Kupier belt of the Sol System and equipping it's fleet of spacecraft with the capability to now make jumps into FTL for more distant travel beyond it's home system. It is still vague on what the newly emerged Ordean Empire wishes to accomplish on the Galactic stage however from its history of how it emerged as it's very own star-state, it's likely to take a very imperialist approach for the betterment of it's Empire.
Potential Greater Impact(s): Due to the emergence of a new player in the Alpha Quadrant it is likely that the Galactic community as a whole and other more established powers residing in Alpha will see the Ordean Empire look to expand its self beyond it's home system. Tensions may begin to fester in nearby localities neighboring the Ordean Sol System as the Ordeans look to become future aggressors in a move for power.

Description: The string of crises that brought down the Martian Conglomerate have been weathered by an interim administration under appointed Empress Nerys Harlow as she struggled to create a functioning post-war government in a shattered economy with unrest and skyrocketing unemployment. In recent months, this administration took form, with Harlow signing the Harlovian Accords officially declaring the end to the Conglomerate, and restructuring the nation as the United Republic. Furthermore, the Empress abdicated her position and handed her authority off to the new civilian government under Secretary-General Ewan Roth and his administration.
Thanks to Harlow's reforms, a joint effort conducted by the UR and the Phoenixi Domain has shown promise. Large state projects, infrastructure spending, coordinated anti-piracy operations, and more diplomacy with the UR's neighbours has started a recovery that many are calling the 'Martian Miracle'. A massive demographic shift is occurring in the nation thanks to resettlement policies with historical 'rural' parts of the empire's periphery becoming more urbanised and experiencing an economic boom. City's like Hypatia, historically considered backwater settlements in a stretched-too-thin empire, are now bustling and rapidly expanding metropolises rivalling the economic dominance Laconia, the capital, enjoyed for over a century. Domestic trade has once again picked up, and food shortages look to soon become a thing of the past after helping to spark some of the unrest in the Delta colonies.
Socially, the nation is coming to grips with the billions of aliens, who typically endured a stratified society full of distrust and disgust. But social opinions have begun to change as the state embraces more democratic reforms.
Potential Greater Impact(s):The United Republic is expected to hit an economic boom that may drastically increase trade and stability in the Reaches and around the Martian Delta. A shift in policy towards being more diplomatic with neighbours and taking a more active, less isolationist role, in foreign affairs could see the UR finally experience an 'awakening' of sorts. Whether or not this may reflect on Alpha's 'Old Money' perception remains to be seen, as the UR flexes its muscles in both diplomacy and security and takes a greater focus on its influence and trade within the Reaches and the Alpha Quadrant.

Description: The Legacy War has come to a conclusion after the retreat of Dread Kingdom warships from the Legacy System and the capture of Neustria by Nalydyan fleets.
Following the Dread Kingdom of Frankia's invasion of the Legacy and Texcoco systems, Texcoco fell almost immediately whilst Jade Imperial forces at Legacy fought a defensive action around key planets. The Imperial Jade Navy prepared a counterattack in conjunction with other members of the Laptev Axis, marshaling an allied fleet of nearly 9,000 additional prime warships drawn from the Jade Empire of Ingen, the Ystovian State and Aldia, led by the dreadnought IJN Rapuchefu. Assaulting the rear echelons of the Dread Fleet, this new force threw the besiegers into disarray. The Urlannan contingent of the Dread Fleet defected, and the Frankish force withdrew from the system, followed shortly by a general withdrawal from the Jade planet of Texcoco.
Meanwhile Neustria, the Dread Kingdom's capitol planet, came under siege from a force of Imperial Nalydyan warships following the Frankish contravention of the Treaty of Olympia. After Nalydyan troops landed on the surface and began a highly destructive ground campaign, the Dread Kingdom capitulated and began evacuating their territories in NS-1, resulting in the Jade Empire and Imperial Nalydya taking possession of several Frankish planets.
Potential Greater Impact(s): The Jade Empire lost approximately one in ten ships present sunk or disabled, and the colony of Texcoco suffered significant damage to its infrastructure. Allied losses were negligible, whilst the Frankish Navy, already depleted during its war with the Empire of Nalydya and the Mayan Confederacy several years previously, was unable to sustain the losses suffered in battle. The end of the Legacy War is hoped to be the final chapter in the tumultuous conflicts begun decades previously in MS-1 and FBN-1, and is a significant victory for the Laptev Axis and her allies.

Following a prolonged period of economic growth and prosperity in the years following its civil war, the Solar Cooperative Union has emerged as a stable and capable state in Central Beta. Bolstered by economic prosperity and a contented population the government has undergone a widespread rearmament and expansion of its naval capabilities. Analysts have suggested this expansion of capabilities is ultimately a means to incorporate the politically independent worlds of the Solarian Fringe into the body of the Union. With internal conflicts largely snuffed out, political discourse in the Union has increasingly turned towards bringing the Fringe worlds into the fold.
At the same time, the little known and hostile Oxakolk Empire has been searching for a new target in its never ending 'Flower Wars'. The Oxakolk hold conflict in sacred regard and believe every generation of young males must participate in a pitched conflict in order for society to function correctly. As a result, they seek out worthy adversaries to engage in these ceremonial conflicts with. In recent months they've intruded into the unregulated space of Central Beta and began establishing a foothold to wage war against their new target: The Solar Cooperative Union. They began their assault with a lightning attack on the politically independent Fringe Worlds, the first to fall being Dratha. Currently they've pushed nearer to the edge of official Union control. The Union leadership has been stuck in political squabbles regarding their response, with the upper echelons of the government hesitant to intervene on behalf of the Fringe. However, an interventionist party has formed among much of the admiralty lead by the charismatic Viseric Atalek. The Solarian populace has begun engaging in massive, peaceful protests demanding the Union intervene to protect their fellow Solarians in the Fringe.
Potential Greater Impact(s): The Oxakolk attack stands to test the mettle of the post-war Union and determine whether its stability and strength is genuine or merely temporary. The Interventionist movement has ignited a surge of Solarian nationalism and ethnic unity among the population, with Viseric Atalek rapidly rising as a leader of a new generation of Solarian patriots.

Spearheaded by researchers from the illustrious Pattala Normal University and backed by private capital and a plethora of state grants from the patchwork administrative divisions of the Golden League and the World School, a new scientific mission is being planned, drawing staff from across the galaxy. In light of the predicted transit of the so-called "thorax" of the Great Attractor through local hyperspace, the newly formed Galactic League for Advanced Gravitic Hyperastronomy (GLfAGHa) has announced its intentions to mount an expedition crossing the galactic plane and navigating through several nearby satellite galaxies to construct observatories and sensor platforms and monitor the transit. To this end, they have designed a vessel (for now known only as the Very Large Starship) capable of supporting a large research staff and their equipment for what is planned to be a multi-year voyage deep into remote regions of local space, built by the renowned Maeshiro habitat-construction conglomerate. Once the vessel is complete and the crew is assembled, it will begin its journey out, headed initially towards several promising sites which have been identified for observatory construction in the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy.
Potential Greater Impact(s): These observations should, hopefully, provide evidence for the advanced theories of hyperspace gravity that have been developed over the last several centuries by various astronomers across the galaxy (and particularly, the predictions of a notable team of researchers from the PNU Astrophysics Department). They will also enable a much-improved estimate of the mass of and distance to the Great Attractor in real space and to its "thorax" in hyperspace, which has the potential to allow for the calculation of more efficient hyperlane trajectories between systems throughout the galaxy. Some ancillary data about remote regions of local space will also likely be accumulated (charting some unknown systems, perhaps documenting a few new species on newly discovered moons and whatnot), and better archaeological lightspeed astronomy of some targets of interest in the main body of the galaxy may be enabled by the planned construction of large observatory outposts with the necessary resolving power.
There are also the potential political or social impacts of a collection of thousands of the galaxy's brightest scientific minds being bonded by searing shared experiences and interacting with hitherto unknown cultures... but GLfAGHa has publicly said nothing about such matters, and there's no reason to think anything could seriously go wrong, given the mission's significant funding and powerful backers. The galaxy should have full confidence that this mission will simply go to Sculptor, build some very nice observatories, and come home in one piece.
