David Florient took another sip of water, rubbed out a wrinkle in his charcoal grey suit, adjusted the knot in his solid red tie, did anything to convince himself that this was just another day, another speech.

Except it wasn't, because today Florient, the 55-year old with wispy grey hair and blue eyes that seemed to mesmerize everyone he came into contact with was announcing the birth of a nation. Of course he'd known that this would be his duty when his colleagues had elected him Chairman of the Constitutional Convention, a happy duty even; after all, he and the 94 others had labored for months to get to this day when they could announce their hard-won document and the country it created to the world. It was a great day, but right now, nerves were overriding his national pride, his conviction that this was the dawn of a great nation.

One of his aides gave him a one-minute warning, and then David felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see the contingent of four Convention delegates who had been selected to stand behind him and provide emphasis and heft to the message of new beginning and unity he would proclaim. Henry Claren, the 72-year old elder statesman with a comedic streak who had tapped David giggled, like a child who was receiving a birthday present they'd been waiting for the entire year and spoke:

"Just remember, I'll be behind you the whole time, making silly faces for the whole world to see. You're welcome."

David was slightly bemused by Henry's ability to make light of such a momentous occasion, but then he was plunged back into nervousness by the tug of an aide and the pulling back of the curtains that had separated him from center stage. He strode confidently enough forward, just confidently enough, not more, not less, he thought. The light bulbs flashed, and the cameras began rolling, as David took one, two, three, four, five steps to the simple black podium, unadorned with any insignia or flag because neither had been chosen yet. It was too skinny for his liking; it didn't provide enough protection. Regardless, he had to speak. Henry had just cleared his throat. Too loudly, David thought.

And so it began:

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight is a momentous occasion. This is a day which will be remembered for a long, long time, for today, the Republic of Welsh Cowboy is born, under a Constitution which I signed earlier today upon the unanimous decision of the Convention called for that purpose. Words cannot express my pride and happiness at today's development."

Here a certain somebody interrupted in a whisper: "But he'll keep blabbering."

"The Constitution that was agreed to has already been submitted to press agencies across the country, and I understand has already been distributed for public consumption. I encourage every single citizen to read this document, as ultimately it can only succeed with the support of the people of Welsh Cowboy. You are the real power behind this nation, you are the propellant which can push us forward."

"There will of course be detractors; there will be those who point to our size, or our newness. There will be those who point to the numerous crises and rampant unrest outside our own borders" - he'd inserted that last part late in the drafting process, since foreign affairs had never much bothered him - "These naysayers will seek to dismiss the monumental step forward we've taken today, but I have one more request to make of you, my fellow citizens of Welsh Cowboy. In the coming days and months, as we work to implement the outline we have produced today, do not listen to them, do not heed their criticism, do not fall for their trap of cynicism. Welsh Cowboy can, and will, be great, with your help. Thank you for your time and may the Republic prosper."

There were some cries from the assembled press for David to stay and answer questions, but as he'd made clear many, many times, a nationally televised speech was quite enough for one day. Besides, he was just a spokesperson, he wasn't a head of state, or even an elected representative of the people. There would be plenty of time for press availability in the future. Maybe with him, maybe not. He wasn't sure.

But one thing was certain. Today Welsh Cowboy was born.

Thalmath Joins SUN.

Postby Thalmath » Mon May 11, 2015 6:29 pm

Recently, Thalmath left MAT to join an alliance with many powerful nations known as SUN. This is what Empress Amaia had to say about the issue.

"After Unibearia left MAT, we, Thalmath, felt no reason to stay. It was in our best interests to join the most powerful alliance on the planet. I thank the other nations within SUN to allow us in to this great community."

Rogerbei, Saratoga -

Earlier today, the Airatanian government came out and "denounce Saratogan "aggression". When I saw this title and started looking through headlines from the previous couple weeks and was very confused by the claims of "Saratogan aggression". Let's go through a timeline of event leading up to this very idiotic claim. The nation of Promethius Prime enacted a Quarantine of Herargon. Moments later the Commonwealthian alliance gathered an invasion force of 46.515 million military personnel. In responds to the massive Commonwealthian invasion force, the Saratogan government enacted a naval blockade of the Saratogan Strait allowing only nations allied with Saratoga to pass through the strait.

In responds to this safety measure taken by the Saratogan Government, President Ward insulted the Saratogan Government, claiming "the actions of Saratoga, a member of the Syndicate of United Nations, are dangerously close to acts of aggression in the eyes of the Airatanian government." I wanna stop here and take a moment to process this. There is an 46.5 MILLION MAN ARMY heading in the direction of Saratoga and we are expected to stand down? What would any other nation do if a 46.5 million man army from an SUN nation approach a Commonwealthian nation, WWII would break out. Anyway, back to the timeline.

While making these claims, President Ward upgraded the military's alert level, the Force Protection Condition (FPCON), to FPCON Charlie, the second highest level. The FPCON is an alert level that adjusts the level of protection for Airatanian military bases across the planet. ANN military analyst Cole Brooks of Airatanian came out saying, "I think so far, their [NAFC officials] actions have been very measured, and are quite frankly what I think we need to see from the military at this time." This isn't warmongering at all, the Brooke continues on saying,"Right now, the military needs to have a forceful response, but it needs to also balance the risk of an actual military confrontation with Saratoga, which is a dangerous and slippery slope. They have to be careful in how they proceed here."

Not too long after this address, New Santiago is admitted into SUN. As this is happening Nedean contracted a mercenaries corporation, Harmony Inc., and New Santiago too set up a blockade of the Nedean-New Santiagian Pass to limit the amount of dangerous military ships around Nedean interests... or you know, to keep out a multi-million man invasion fleet. In responds to these defensive moves by Nedea, the Airatanian President, Madeline Ward, issued DEFCON 3 because, "Airatanian naval vessels were already in the area on their way to Herargon as part of the Commonwealth quarantine put in place last week." This nation is violating Nedea's territorial waters while crying about the chance theirs might be violated as well (sounds a little pretentious to me don't you think.).

Soon after that, the Leader of the Commonweath alliance, Promethius Prime orders a full mobilization of the entire Commonwealth alliance. A CMC spokesman cited this reason for the sudden military mobilization,

"The closure of a large area of international waters around Nedea, New Santiago and Saratoga are of grave concern. These are deliberate acts of provocation against the Commonwealth and the world at large and the Commonwealth is not prepared to sit idly by and allow the debilitation or weakening of our allies and members. Airatania is a valued part of the Commonwealth and is directly affected by this illegal closure of trading lanes. Though the waters in question lie between SUN aligned nations beyond 50 miles of the coastline they are in fact outside their national sovereignty; this is therefore seen as an act of aggression." Yet when I read the original announcement by Nedea about the blockade it clearly allows trade traffic to continue flowing through it. "All non-SUN military vessels will have to receive permission from the Syndicate of Corporations prior to entry. Any trade vessels will be permitted passage without any interference."

Ok...ok... So Nedea, New Santiago, and Saratoga are christened the "axis of evil" because they are showing opposition too an alliance who thinks they can just barge through our nations waters with 46 MILLION SOLDIERS. I bring up this point again, WHAT IF SUN DID THAT TO ONE OF THE COMMONWEATHIAN NATIONS? What SUN is doing is a defensive measure to prepare for a potential war because the Commonwealth Alliance is scared of some wimpy WMD's and is willing to plunge the world into WWII because of it. Are you kidding me? Prime probably has more WMD firepower than most of the minor nations (Unibearia, Casius, Vvarden) combined.

Moving on to later that night, the Commonwealth combined forces boarded a Saratogan cargo ship. While holding it's crew hostage, they ripped the ship to pieces looking for some "arms". (I spoke with a representative of the Saratogan navy who confirmed to me that the ship had weapons on it but these weapons were decommissioned handguns. Barely in functioning shape.) After this discovery of arms on board the cargo ship, Commonwealthian combined navies seized the cargo ship, robbing it of its content and "noting its worth", promising to repay the Saratogan government the value of the cargo but has yet to actually pay up. I didn't know that Promethius Prime is a nation of pirates and thieves. By the time morning came, the Commonwealthian pirates got three more victims. Still having yet to pay.

A few days after that whole incident, I awoke too this headline, "Airatanian naval vessels move through Nedean/Santiagan Pass in defiance of SUN blockade." Overnight, the Airatanian naval vessels off the coast of Nedea were ordered to move through the international waters of the Nedean/Santiagan Pass today, in defiance of a blockade put in place by SUN member Nedea. According to reports, Nedean and New Santiago, officials challenge the recognition of international waters in the area, claiming them as their own, and requiring all non-SUN military vessels to receive permission to pass through the area. Yet, Nedea, New Santiago, and Saratoga are still the villains here.

In responds to this, The Nedean corporations gave permission to Harmony mercenaries too "begin firing warning shots at all Airatanian vessels continuing without prior permission." This order is given because the reckless and idiotic President of Airatanian who worked in defiance and disrespect towards other nations national security. This is my favorite part, while all of this drama is happening, the Zaphironian government requests to pass through the blockade and is... allowed. See how common sense works, if you ask we are reasonable, if you demand... then screw you.

With the Ward administration continuing its warmongering and aggressive decisions, the Saratogan government ordered mobilization of its military. Senior Councilmen Adam Smith comments on this saying, "Much like it's Nedean Allies, the Saratogan Government doesn't want war but the Commonwealthians push for one. We chose to mobilize to show the world we will not back down from the Commonwealthian warmongers." The Saratogan government doesn't know when the Airatanian military will just invade Saratoga because of the colors on her flag bother them a little.

And know we get to today,

"Airatanian officials denounce Saratogan 'aggression', call for talks between Commonwealth and SUN.
The Airatanian government denounced the movement of troops and ships in St. Saratoga as "all out aggression" and called for all movement between sides to stop until talks can take place between the Commonwealth and SUN." This comes after everything listed above. Nedea, New Santiago, and Saratoga at this point are the farthest from "all out aggressive" after 46.5 million soldiers threaten then attempt to barge through 4 peaceful nations. So, I would like to write theses people a letter.

Dear Commonwealth alliance and President Ward,

Please think before you speak because otherwise it makes you look like the most barbaric and idiotic nations in the world. Logic is key and I hope you can find it in yourselves to just return home to your families before you instigate world war II.

Cheers,

President Derrik recovering in Arcadian hospital, doctors say that he is well enough to return

After a shocking disease almost killed President Johans Derrik - which many say was a mutated form of pneumonia, created when the Nedean air from the Gala mutated a pneumonia virus that lurked in President Derrik's system - Arcadian doctors have given word to the Vvardeni Government that President Derrik is now fully purged of the disease. The results came after several weeks in the hospital, being treated with a specialised solution. Only three days ago, he was reported by the Arcadian doctors as going for regular walks and talking to other patients, including a few undergoing surgery. Yesterday, he was said, according to witnesses, to be sparring with his husband Daxtarian in the bounds of the hospital while doctors watched, recording his recovery.
He will soon arrive back in Vvarden in a few days time.

Vice President Gran Eryite concerned with current events, calling for stability
In a recent speech, Vice President Gran Eryite has called for stability of the current situation between SUN and the Commonwealth, saying that although Herargon had indeed performed and had performed atrocities against people, she believes that there can be better ways to solve those problems.
It has recently come to my attention that the situation between the Commonwealth and SUN is spiralling out of control, with some saying that the Herargonese Government has performed atrocities going up against those who defend Herargon. Vvarden believes that Herargon has performed atrocities, such as the compulsory military training and use of WMDs, one of which was exploded off the coast of Herargon, killing several Vvardeni by accident, I am sure, the use of work and concentration camps to those who fail to comply with the government's laws, and the use of slavery which has recently come to our attention, still shows their disrespect. Though Vvarden sides with the Commonweath slightly, we call for peaceful ways to end this, rather than blockades. Persuasion goes a long way in changing ideals and systems. Some ways, and this is for example, is to, say, promote a peaceful slave uprising in the tradition of say Mahatama Ghandi's protests against the British, calling for a free India. This is what we should promote, not violence. We need a free Herargon and only peace can provide that without incalculable losses.

Mauric Lyndon, Man with bad cough spewed out a bug'

Graphic designer Mauric Lyndon, 52, felt the need to hack up what he thought was a "large flem ball" - but was amazed to discover what he coughed up was in fact a 5mm long bug.
Mr Lyndon, who now lives near Mzungthunch and could have inhaled it in his sleep told The New Erriel Sentinel: "I've had a bad cough for a little while and went to the doctors last Thursday.
"He gave me antibiotics and on Friday morning I coughed up what I thought was a big lump of flem into the toilet.
“I then looked a little closer as I could see something brown in it and it was wriggling.
"I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and fished it out.
"It had stopped moving by this point and I took a picture on my Holopad."

The Board Reacts To Allies blockade

After many days of heated debate between the corporations on the topic of the tensions arising between SUN members Nedea/St Saratoga and The Commonwealth, the head of the board Mr. Arviks has released a statement on behalf of New Wolfeinstein.

"After observing the actions of all parties involved in the minor conflicts in the south New Wolfeinstein has decided to mobilise part of its military for the purpose of defence. All of the Commonwealth nations actively trading with New Wolfeinstein merchant ships will not be harassed, however any military vessels outside of trade escorts seen in New Wolfeinstinian waters will be treated as an act of aggression and dealt with accordingly. We are so far north that any action beyond this was deemed unnecessary."

The WN has been mobilised and is patrolling Wolfish waters.

BREAKING NEWS
Continuing Coverage of the Crisis in the South

Navy ships hold outside exclusion zone, military movements halted while government awaits response from Nedea and Saratoga
NEW MIRACUS, Airatania -- President Ward ordered all naval ships in the area of the Nedea/Santiagan Pass to hold position just outside the Nedean exclusion zone, a move the government hopes can de-escalate the situation long enough for talks to take place between Airatania and other Commonwealth nations and SUN nations Nedea and Saratoga.

"Our second flotilla, the 81st Naval Command Division, has been ordered to hold in place for the time being," Admiral Thomas Maddox said in a press conference at the National Armed Forces Command (NAFC) earlier today. "The President believes that talks could still take place that would de-escalate the situation, but from my understanding, that all hinges on them [Saratoga]," Admiral Maddox continued, referring to the recend build-up of Saratogan troops and naval vessels just south of Airatania. Saratoga's move, one regarded as "reckless" by one government official, were made in response to Airatanian ships running the Nedean blockade earlier in the day, according to reports in the Santiagan media.

"Right now, our main concern is still the support of the Commonwealth forces near Herargon. However, we are committed to attempting to de-escalate the situation closer to home, but all sides have to want that, and quite frankly, Saratoga looks like they don't want to play ball," Admiral Maddox said. "I'm very surprised by their actions, they know we don't want a full scale conflict, but the fact is, the waters both they and Nedea claim as their own simply aren't, and the President has stated time and again she will not negotiate the free movement of our armed forces within international territory, the withdrawal of our forces from international waters in simply not on the table."

Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Meredith Tierney said she hoped to get Nedea and Saratoga to the table to discuss the demands from all parties, but, she added, that talk would have to take place on neutral soil. "I think Onza's offer is still the best option right now," Secretary Tierney added.

ANN Chief Foreign Affairs correspondent Cambria Miller said on World News Live that both sides don't have a lot of room to negotiate. "The fact of the matter is, this all comes down to Airatania wanting free space to move its military as it pleases, while Nedea and Saratoga are trying, in their eyes, to protect their interests," Miller said. "It's going to be a real challenge to make everyone happy here, and honestly, I don't see a scenario where Airatania comes away happy, short of securing those waters for international use."

Grand Duchy drops concerns over other alliances
Midgar,46566-With the recent clarification by the Unibearia and Airatania governments the Grand Duchy officially drops it's concerns over them receiving military grade tech and trade within the Commonwealth. With the Unibearian dissolution of MAT and Airatania clarification of leaving the RA there was no longer a concern about allowing the nations to use Commonwealth tech in their militaries and to start producing their own Commonwealth military goods.
The Grand Duchy will open up the possibility to sell the old armored vehicles formally used by the Grand Duchy military to the Commonwealth in general law enforcement agencies. The move is in the hopes of taking control of a little used industry around the member nations and the hopes to not clash with any other industries around the Commonwealth.

Arcadian Media Rip Into Saratogan Opinion Columnist Simon Wells
After the publication of an Opinion Article by Columnist Simon Wells in a Saratogan newspaper the Arcadian news media has begun analysing the so called 'facts' upon which it relies bringing into question the competence and reliability of not only the journalist in question but also the newspaper itself. Such has been the virility of the media's mockery of this piece that a government official commented on the situation during a late night interview.

"Well I think the important thing to point out is that though the article claims to be opinion it very much presents itself as fact and cites a number of spurious pieces of evidence the back up the numerous suppositions made by the author. If it weren't for the prominent nature of the newspaper within its own country such an article would probably have been dismissed as fringe media hokum; as it is the newspaper in which it was published is one of the main sources of news media in Saratoga and one would expect them to hold even their opinion columnists to a certain standard, which is clearly lacking here."

"First he refers to a nation called Promethius Prime, now I can only assume he's referring to the Union of Arcadian States since no such nation exists on Yukon, nor has it ever. We can draw this assumption of course based on two things, the existence of the State of Promethius within the Union of Arcadian States and the Promethian declaration, an archaic document dating back to Enkon. In any event he goes on to claim that it was we who were responsible for enacting the blockade when in fact it was a multinational force drawing troops from three Commonwealth countries and led by a mixed command group; certainly the man who oversaw the operation and ordered it is of Arcadian origin but he did this on orders from the CXC which is a multinational body. In additional he describes the force as an 'invasion force' something I find deeply amusing since it consisted entirely of naval, air and space forces with no ground invasion capability whatsoever; it was stated at the time that the intention was not to invade and as far as I know no invasion plans ever existed."

"We should next analyse this closing of the Saratogan 'strait'. Now I'm sure this will cause some confusion among members of the public throughout the Commonwealth since no such geographical feature exists. The area in question is usually referred to as the Core Passage or the Saratogan Way and is in fact a large sea that just so happens to have Saratogan territory on either side. Claiming that Saratoga has territorial rights there is about as logical as claiming Croxoco has territorial rights over the entire East Corallian or Great Divide. Besides the fact that any effort to block access to this area would prove about as futile as trying to light a fire with happy thoughts without mobilising the entire military force of Saratoga to the area to patrol 24/7, we have the fact that Commonwealth forces weren't using that route and wouldn't anyway."

"Now we logically move on to the next statement of dubious merit; that the Saratogan decision was not an act of aggression. They just closed off an entire sea directly north and east of Airatnian waters, which houses several international trade lanes... what is that other than aggression. The area of water isn't theirs to close off, they've basically invaded it and plopped an occupying force there to make sure nobody contests the claim; its water which up until now was free and open for Airatanian use. Their justification? That a 6.5 million man army is headed that way. It beggars belief; to be pedantic the force has no army units in it, but that's hardly relevant considering the force wasn't going that way anyway - in fact unless the entirety of the Ukoiic and Saiic Oceans are now SUN territory the force wasn't going anywhere remotely near there."

"A minor point to make at this juncture is that the Columnist seems to think Cole Brooks is a public official, making an official statement of policy... now I have enormous respect for Brooks as I'm sure you do but in the nicest way he just isn't an official. Like this Saratogan joker he's a reporter, one who specialises in military affairs, and he was doing his job - that is to say he was analysing the situation and reporting on it."

"Now we get onto the closure of waters between Nedea and New Santiago. Once again tenuous conclusions are made based on non-existent evidence. The waters in question are bigger than the Saratogan Way, so I don't think I need to illustrate further on the point - not only that but to restate what I've already said the main 46.5 million man 'army' wasn't even passing through that area, the only force which was was the comparatively tiny Airatanian complement. Now I agree at this point that there is an issue over whose waters are whose since some of the waters closed off are in fact quite close to Airatania but this is something which should have been handled diplomatically, not with a blanket ban on non-SUN movement through an area of contested territory."

"Once again he goes on to state 'fact' by saying that the fictional nation of Promethius Prime is the leader of the Commonwealth; well if we apply the assumption that he means the UAS then he's still wrong, because the closest thing the Commonwealth gets to a leader is Hanlon Ivo, the acting Secretary General and he's not Arcadian, but Midgari. I think he is in fact referring to the CMC Chief of Staff, Grand Admiral Nobura, who is the man in charge of the military branch of the alliance and is subordinate to both Ivo and the CXC in pretty much all matters. But I digress, finally he states hard fact by quoting a Commonwealth official directly, but he gets the interpretation completely wrong, which might be understandable since the original statement was issued in High Arcadian, but translation issues aside (Low Arcadian translators have accidentally been asked to translate High Arcadian before now) he fails to draw out any solid facts to support his case. When he refers to the closure of trading lanes he obvious refers to the Saratogan closure which was absolute; the Commonwealth does brisk trade with Onza through those waters and has an agreement to protect her interests."

"Now let's move on once more; no-one but Wells is referring to anyone as the 'Axis of Evil', even the most radical anti-SUN lobbyists and politicians in Arcadia refer to SUN as little more than 'misguided' and 'dissolute', hardly the 'Axis of Evil' Wells claims; I can't speak for other Commonwealth countries of course but no-one within the CXC has yet to my knowledge referred to SUN or its members as evil or anything of the sort. But in this same breath he claims that Arcadia (again he refers to it incorrectly as Prime) probably has more WMDs than many smaller nations combined; this isn't actually true. The UAS has always been quite open about the fact that it maintains the ability to manufacture a variety of WMDs but does not actually maintain a permanent arsenal; our standing military strength is derived purely from conventional weapons. I admit some of those weapons are frighteningly powerful and mounted on craft in orbit but they do not compare in scale individually to the power of a single WMD."

"Next we have the issue of ships and their crews being held 'hostage'; when the quarantine was set up it was made perfectly clear that all ships would be stopped and searched and that if any arms or military equipment were found then the cargo would be confiscated and the balance repaid to its owner. It was the Saratogan's choice to continue, it was their choice to carry arms which they knew would be seized and it is now their choice not to cash the promissory notes. The notes were issued in good faith and the Commonwealth has a policy of automatic payment; all a nation or company need do is present the note at either a Commonwealth bank, embassy or consulate and the balance will be paid in full. So if we haven't paid yet its because the notes have not yet been redeemed."

"Again we have another spurious claim that the movement of a few Airatanian ships several hundred miles away from any SUN held land, much less cities in any way actually threatened the national security of the nations in question. You tell me, if I were on a boat eight hundred miles away from you would you feel overly threatened by me? You probably wouldn't even know I was there unless you were looking for me with some pretty advanced technology. Now he claims that asking politely to enter waters which don't belong to anyone anyway would result in a reasonable response. I contend that making us ask to enter these waters in the first place is unreasonable and that choosing not to acknowledge the demand we were perfectly reasonable; we didn't demand passage, we just went ahead and did what we had every right to do in the first place."

Just Day Into Nation's Existence, Political Jockeying Begins

- DOYLEFORD

Just yesterday, David Florient, chairman of the Welsh Cowboy Constitutional Convention, announced that the group he chaired had unanimously adopted a Constitution, thereby creating the Republic of Welsh Cowboy.

Today, with celebrations still ongoing, the race to be in the new nation's first government commenced, with dozens of figures, unconnected by political parties or even ideological alliances, signaling their intention to run for one of hundreds of offices created by the ratified Constitution, ranging from President to seats in the bicameral National Assembly. Below, the Journal seeks to break down the top two offices, those of the executive branch, and the contenders:

PRESIDENT: As expected, there is heavy interest in becoming Welsh Cowboy's first head of state, and most analysts expect the race to be a crowded one. Here are some of the top candidates, in alphabetical order:

Henry Claren- Known primarily for his eccentricities and his vigor even at age 72, Claren, according to sources within the Convention, was a key force throughout, working to build consensus at times, while also fiercely debating those who crossed him on issues he considered important. Claren is considered solidly left of center on the political spectrum, and he would probably be far from a universally loved choice, both from delegates still smarting from his tongue lashings and citizens who might not share his ideology. However, his charisma and natural ability to connect with everyday voters would make him a force to be reckoned with. He refused to comment on his plans today when contacted by the Journal.

David Florient- The man who announced to the world the results of the Constitutional Convention and served as the same group's leader for over six months, guiding a disparate group of 95 delegates from across the country to a unanimous agreement has indicated ambivalence about his political future. The 55-year old Florient, considered to be a pragmatic centrist, refused to comment on his own ambitions, instead keeping focus on the work the Convention was doing. With that work now completed, many analysts see the Doyleford native as the favorite for the top job, if indeed he decides to run at all.

Dalton Foley- Young, handsome, passionate. These words define the 38-year old teacher who became a media sensation when chosen unexpectedly to attend the Constitutional Convention after heavy grassroots campaigning in and around his hometown of Chalmerston, in the north. His daily statements were quick to criticize anyone or anything he found incompetent or disagreeable; something that endeared him to as many legions of fans as it alienated. Insiders said though that Foley spent very little time working at the details of crafting a governing document, reports that served only to polarize the two camps of public opinion on Foley. What political views he has and has made public place him center-right on the spectrum, but his maverick streak makes him a wildcard. He responded to the Journal's enquiries about his plans: "I am eager to explore ways to serve this nation and take it forward. If I can do this in the Presidency, I will do so."

Karyn Stratham- One of 32 women in attendance at the convention, Stratham was the only female to stand behind Chairman Florient as he announced the Constitution's adoption yesterday, underlining her importance to the Convention, despite her low-key public presence, which is at odds with the well-timed leaks of potential interest in the Presidency, which analysts say are no accident but most likely efforts to gain her some name recognition before a future run. At 48, she's young enough to speak to a younger, hopeful generation, but also seasoned enough to campaign on experience and competency. Widely viewed as a moderate on most issues, she could serve as the center's chosen candidate if Florient declines to run.

VICE PRESIDENT: The Number 2 will be elected separately from the President, which, in the wide-open current political landscape, could lead to a free-for-all for a position that has the roles of presiding over the Legislative Council and swearing in high-ranking officials but few others, unless called upon by the chief executive's incapacitation or death. The leaders in the race are below, again in alphabetical order:

Henry Claren- Highlighted above as a potential presidential candidate, some analysts say that he could run for either executive branch position, with his independence and no-holds barred style potentially adding flavor to the undercard.

Jason Hammond- A 60-year old doctor from Doyleford, Hammond was recruited by several influential friends to serve as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, where his plain speaking and candidness won him admirers both within and without the halls of the Convention. He self identifies as "center-right", but his pacifist demeanor and approach make him an unlikely but not implausible pick for those seeking a competent but far from flashy no. 2. Dr. Hammond did not respond to Journal requests for comment.

Karyn Stratham- Also profiled as a presidential hopeful, Stratham could run unofficially as David Florient's running mate if the Chairman hops in the Presidential race, as the two seem compatible ideologically and many analysts say the pair developed a friendly relationship during the Convention.

Riley Willis-The only declared candidate for the Vice Presidency thus far, self-described socialist Willis cried foul after not being invited to be a delegate at the Constitutional Convention, with the 53-year old construction foreman leading several protest marches to the steps of the Convention's meeting place. These marches display a certain, passionate backing, but his abrasive personality and polarizing ideology probably move him into the "fringe" category.

A major aspect of both the presidential and vice presidential campaigns, as well as the legislative elections, has yet to be determined: when elections will be held, although the Constitution stipulates they must be held within eight weeks of ratification. Analysts say Chairman Florient is likely to ask for an election within a month's time, which will likely be approved by the Convention delegates as a whole. No doubt the announcement will turn up the dial on the inaugural campaigns in Welsh Cowboy even more.

Contact with Welsh Cowboy Government 'Welcome,' says Preside

Postby Onza » Tue May 12, 2015 2:34 pm

Elephantine, Onza - Following news that contact had been made for the first time with ancient Onzaian ally, Welsh Cowboy, President Khalil Sayyid made remarks.

"I think that I alone speaking on the magnitude of this contact does not justify it. The ancient bond of friendship that has existed between our two nations for centuries is unmatched by any other bond between nations in the world. We welcome this discovery, and wish the absolute best to the newly-elected government. We are quite excited to hear of the results," said Sayyid.

The President took questions, though they were primarily related to exactly what relations would be sought out, and all received a similar response - the administration is still investing time and energy into crafting a diplomatic proposition.

BREAKING NEWS
Continuing Coverage of the Crisis in the South

EXCLUSIVE: ANN's Brooks: Talks underway between Airatania and Nedea; letter from Simon Wells 'absurd, troubling'
NEW MIRACUS, Airatania -- Tentative talks are now beginning between Airatanian and Nedean officials regarding the removal of a blockade in the Nedean/Santiagan Pass, according to ANN Chief Military Analyst Cole Brooks. Brooks broke the news during an interview on ANN's World News Live.

"My sources are saying these talks have only just begun within the last few hours, so it's really too early to say if any progress has been made," Brooks said, noting that Saratoga and Airatania have not yet come to the table. "There is no official dialogue [with Saratoga], so far as I know."

The full transcript of Brooks' remarks can be found below:
Jeanine Triano (Anchor): Cole, I understand you have some new information for us?

Cole Brooks: I do Jeanine, apparently, according to my sources inside the Defense Department, Airatanian officials, just hours ago, entered into the beginning stages of talks with Nedea regarding the blockade. My sources are saying these talks have only just begun within the last few hours, so it's really too early to say if any progress has been made. But I can say that this does not extend to Saratoga, this is only with Nedea at the moment. There is no official dialogue, so far as we know. I've been texting with a couple of my sources, but right now they don't have anything new to add yet. This is all still to early.

JT: What does this mean for the situation as it stands now?

CB: Well, again, its still too early to say. But, this is a very promising sign, because it means there may still be a diplomatic solution to all of this. What that solution is, I couldn't tell you. But what's surprising, I think, is that Saratoga isn't included in this. I don't know if that means, if there is a simple, reasonable explanation, or if the situation with Saratoga is more complicated or more volatile, I have no idea. But it is quite peculiar, indeed. The movements of Saratoga and Nedea seemed coordinated, and I'd be very surprised if this was simply an oversight on the government's part. But, we won't know until official information is released later tonight.

JT: How long can the Airatanian government wait to allow a peace deal to come together?

CB: Well, not long. They need to get personnel in place to assist with the situation in Herargon, which is slowly improving, but is still a top priority for President Ward and her administration. The tricky thing here is, the longer this stalemate goes, the more likely it is the whole of the Commonwealth will get involved, regardless of if the navy runs the blockade again. THe longer we go with no solution, the more likely it is that the conflict expands. So I'd say they'll give it no more than 72 hours before the second group of Navy ships moves through the area.

JT: On to the letter written in the Rogerbei Times yesterday by senior editor Simon Wells. Mr. Wells had some pretty harsh words for both the Airatanian government, and you specifically. What are you thoughts on the letter?

CB: I, well, I think it's absurd, honestly. Very absurd, and very troubling. Look, I'm all for free speech, in its truest form. But this letter from Simon was simply vitriol, there's no two ways about it. The 'facts' that lists are absolutely ridiculous. It clearly shows that Saratogans are having a hard time understanding the reckless nature of what their government is doing. Airatania was peacefully moving naval ships through the area, something we do literally all the time. But, because of the circumstances in Herargon, Saratoga, and especially Mr. Wells, it seems, have felt, I don't know, threatened, by tactics and plans that have been in place for years. I'm disgusted by his letter, and I know it will do nothing to help the situation. If anything, it just increases the tension in the air, which is a tragedy, an absolute tragedy.

Florient Announces Election Date; Sparks Flurry of Candidacy Announcements

- DOYLEFORD

The Constitutional Convention made one of its last planned major decisions today, announcing that elections for the first government of Welsh Cowboy will be held four weeks from today for offices in both the national executive and legislative branches.

Convention Chairman David Florient made the announcement via press release, after a vote behind closed doors approved the date:

"Today, in a meeting of the Convention called specifically for the purpose of determining a date for national elections, the delegates approved a plan to schedule the elections for four weeks from today. The Convention felt that this date would provide enough time for an adequate campaign and exercise of the democratic process, while also ensuring that a stable and democratically elected government will be in place in our great nation quickly. Until that time, though, the Constitutional Convention and its delegates are committed to providing the Republic with a competent caretaker government."

The announcement was expected, and also as anticipated, the determination of voting day kicked the various campaigns into high gear. In the presidential race, young center-right, maverick Dalton Foley, a teacher from the northern town of Chalmerston, threw his hat in the ring, resigning from the Convention and making an announcement speech outside a Doyleford school, proclaiming himself as "ideally suited for the job":

"You know, I'm sure the pundits and the media will dismiss me as a fringe candidate, a 'polarizer', unfit to lead the nation. I ask all of you, and every citizen of Welsh Cowboy, to move past that, to recognize it for what it is: meaningless babble. Together, we can do something great."

Meanwhile, the vice presidential race doubled in size, with socialist construction foreman Riley Willis holding a rally in Doyleford calling for a "people's movement" and a "clear message to the elites; the people hold the real power". Willis was joined by a competitor, Karyn Stratham, the most prominent female delegate to the Constitutional Convention.

The 48-year old's resignation from the Convention and decision to jump into the race for the number 2 office in the nation clears the way, most analysts believe, for a Florient run for the presidency, since Florient and Stratham share an abiding pragmatism and moderate political views. Stratham attempted to chart her own path with an announcement statement:

"Today I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Vice President. It has been my pleasure to serve the citizens of Welsh Cowboy in crafting a Constitution, and I hope to continue that service. I feel I will bring a passion for building the nation to the office and eagerly look forward to making my case directly to Welsh Cowboy and its people."

Notably lacking in these early statements and candidacies, including the dozens of declared candidates for the National Assembly, are any semblance of political parties, and the dearth of actual policy prescriptions, with most choosing to instead utter platitudes like those listed above. Analysts say this is likely to change in the coming campaign, but most also agree that this election could be defined by the candidates and their personalities.

Unibearia leaves Kredit Union

In an effort to brake ties with Nedea, the Imperial Assembly proposed leaving the Kredit Union and selling its stash of Kredits or even burning it. The vote was 1560-440 for.

Then the Aristocracy was left to make a decision. Since the Commonwealth already had a reserve currency, it left Unibearia in a position where if ever Nedea was a potential enemy, Unibearia would not want their currency in use inside Unibearia or even as a economic backing. The Aristocracy passed the bill.

As of now, The Union of Bearian States is no longer part of Kredit Union and the Kredit is no longer accepted in Unibearia however, in every port and airport, there will be a currency exchange office to exchange Kredits for Unakoes.

BREAKING NEWS
Continuing Coverage of the Crisis in the South

Nedean blockade to end as deal is reached
NEW MIRACUS, Airatania -- After pulling an all-nighter during an emergency meeting, Airatanian and Nedean officials reached a formal agreement that will bring the blockade of the Nedean/Santiagan Pass to an end. President Ward's administration made the announcement moments ago in a press release to the media. A press conference will follow soon. The details of the deal are listed below:

From Airatania:
  • Airatania will send a formal letter of apology to Nedea for the government's reckless behavior and not considering talking to Nedea about the exclusion zone
  • Airatanian military officials must give Nedean officials a notice ahead of any military movements in the area
  • Trade negotiations will begin between the Commonwealth and Nedea
  • Airatania will allow for possible future joint navy operations in shared waters and never blockade or impede the pass of Nedean ships in the area

From Nedea:
  • Nedean blockade will be removed
  • Harmony will be ordered to stand down
  • Nedean administration will send a formal letter of apology to the Airatanian government for their unnecessary declaration of ownership of the pass
  • Nedea will never block or impede Airatanian ships in shared waters
  • Nedean military officials must give Airatanian officials a notice ahead of any military movements in the area

From both sides:
  • Mutual recognition of a pass, at least 100 miles in width through the area, that are "international waters" and cannot be blocked, by any nation, for any reason

UPDATE: Airatanian President Madeline Ward has released a statement to the Nedean people:
To the people of the Syndicated Corporations of Nedea,

The situation that has developed over the last week between our two nations has been regrettable, to say the least. For our governments to have come so close to the brink of war, and yet be able to come to a peaceful resolution, is a testament to the dedication of both peoples and both governments to making our world a better place.

It is in the spirit of this that, on behalf of the people of Airatania, I apologize for our role in the crisis this last week. The decisions we made regarding the Nedean blockade were regrettable and detrimental to the peace and stability in the area. While we still believe in the goals that led to the crisis, such as the disarmament of Herargon, we acknowledge that our decisions regarding our neighbor, Nedea, were in error.

Sincerely,
Madeline Ward

Grand Duchy looks to loan
Midgar,46566- The Grand Duchy looks to loan 20 trillion euros to the nations of Airatania, Vvarden and Unibearia. The loans will have a 1% interest on each loan and a 50 year pay back period. The 20 trillion will need to be paid back and the loans will have the requirement that 5 trillion of the loans must be used to buy goods from the Grand Duchy.Either a service from the Grand Duchy or for goods sold by the Grand Duchy. While not aid as either the UAS or Croxoco has given the Grand Duchy will offer it to each new nation of the Commonwealth. Should they choose to lower the payment of the loan the Grand Duchy will agree to basing rights within the country for the 50 year loan payment. The bases will only total 3 separate military bases at the choosing of the home country.

Unibearia and Arcadia to Construct Transnational Rail Link
Commonwealth City
Image
A rough map of the planned rail link.
The Arcadian and Unibearian spokesmen in Commonwealth City came together today to formally announce the construction of a transnational rail link between the two nations. This move should not be considered overly surprising since both nations are Commonwealth members and the treaty binding them together in friendship mandates the expansion of trade. The deal struck between Unibearia and Arcadia sees the overall management of the project go to the Arcadian Seneca Corporation which has been responsible for the construction of vast transport infrastructure projects since Enkon; however it was made clear that Seneca would be working closely with Unibearian engineers and would be utilising locally sourced labour forces to actually complete the construction. What this means is that not only will Arcadia be overseeing construction, but they will also be imparting valuable skills and expertise to the Unibearians.

The planned rail link shall run from the far western coast of Unibearia to the far east with a central railhead providing a link southwards into Arcadia; from here the rail line will separate in one following the western frontier line the other snaking through the east of the Cadian region; additional railheads hall then connect the link to Thedes, Promethius, Eketraine and the Ashima Isles. The link will then be connected at various key junctions to the internal rail networks of the two nations allowing for direct rail traffic of both freight and citizens between all key areas of Unibearia and Arcadia.

The link itself shall utilise state of the art grav-rail technology, providing a fast, efficient and reliable service. Grav-rail technology was first developed on Enkon, by the Seneca Corporation for the production of the Arcadian rail network there. Since then the system has undergone a number of significant changes and upgrades to boost speed, safety and maximum capacity. It is expect that a train will be able to go from eastern Promethius in Arcadia, to western Unibearia, in as little as 5 days if it is not delayed and does not stop for any significant period.

The system relies primarily upon a lattice of interconnected grav-pylons which, when set up in a hexgrid formation, creates the line - up to six hexgrid lines can be set up within close proximity to one another safely, without risk of the grids interconnecting. While travelling through rail junctions, stations or urban areas the system switches to a fixed position grav-line which runs either along the ground, a wall or an overhead ceiling. The trains themselves including the cars 'attach' using what is known as a grav-talon on a spin-rig - in short the talon rotates around the outside of the train car to point in the direction of the nearest grav-pylon or line, at which point an energy bond is formed which both holds the train suspended and propels it along the line. An added safety feature is an ultra low friction grabline which automatically activates should power to either the train or the grav-lines fail.

SHIPRECKS DISCOVERED

Wrecks of Croxoconian Star Cruisers, thought to have crashed into the sea 100 Years before the landing of the City Ships which brought the nation of Croxoco to Yukon, have been found off the coast of the Cluster of Croxoconian Islands located to the North of Vvarden. Once the discovery was made, Croxoconian Forces were sent to other similar sights across Croxoco. In all, so far 6 clusters of such wrecks have been found, with each cluster estimated to contain between 50 and 200 vessels. Salvage teams have been assembled to salvage the wrecks and seize any Croxoconian Assets of Value, on behalf of the Croxoconian Government. The Vessels are thought, from ancient records, to contain much of the Gold and Silver Bullion from the Ancient Croxoconian Star Empire, in addition to many relics of the Old Empire, previously thought to have been lost.

Gold and Silver Mining Operations Expand

Due to a surplus of labour, many idle miners and equipment have been transferred to the Government's mining operations across Croxoco. Due to this surplus of labour, mining targets are expected to be overwhelmingly exceeded, with many industrial experts now estimating that at the rate of mining, the amount of Gold Bullion held in reserves by the Bank of Croxoco will reach 105 Metric Tonnes per million of people, 20 Tonnes above the original target, though with the discovery of the Shipwrecks, this initial estimate may be dwarfed somewhat.

Final Constitutional Convention to Take Place

In fulfilment of pledges made by the present government and previous governments, the final preparations are being made to discuss the final form of government Croxoco shall have, now that various models have been tested. It is widely expected that the nation will choose a Federal Presidential Republic, due to the feeling that a Unitary State and a Parliamentary Republic allow for too powerful an executive. It is expected the new constitution will be based on limited government and constitutional rights, in addition to firm separation of power and a weaker executive, so that all branches of state are separate, but equal.

Foreign Ministry Makes Statement on Unibearia:

The Foreign Ministry assures Unibearia that Croxoco desires only warmer relations with Unibearia, and has no ulterior motive for the provision of aid, to the sum of 50 Trillion Croxoconian Lires per annum, to the United Bearian States, and would welcome cultural and educational exchanges between Croxoco and Unibearia, and, in particular, between Humans and Wolfen. Croxoco also praises Unibearia for the warmer relationship it has developed with Croxoco's closest ally, the United Arcadian States.

Grand Duchy to deploy some armed forces
Midgar,46566- The Grand Duchy has agreed to deploy 30 million troops from it's army to the nation of Airatania. The move is to help protect the country from potential invasion from St Saratoga. The move is in the hopes that by bolstering the defense of Airatania that St Saratoga can be forced to the table. The Grand Duchy asks other Commonwealth members to help protect one of the newer alliance members. A statement released by the government has stated the following:
"the troop movement is purely for the defense of our ally in the south west of Yukon and in no way should be seen as a potential invasion force of the Sartogan homeland. The troops are meant to help bolster the defenses of Airatania and no more."

The hopes are that a troop movement of such magnitude will not escalate the situation further.Though the belief is that such a show of force will force the government of St Saratoga to the table after Nedea made another deal to step out of any potential conflict in the area.At this point the Saratogain government seems isolated.

Saratoga reacts to 46566 slap in the face.

Postby St Saratoga » Fri May 15, 2015 1:25 pm

Rogerbei, Saratoga -

Soon after Saratogan Intelligence reported a task force of 30 million troops heading to Airatania, Prime Minister Quinnson lowered the DEFCON level to 2 (Wartime readiness). The Saratogan Military is preparing for an all out in invasion by Commonwealthian forces. Reports are coming out that the Saratogan Imperial Naval Command has order the 1st Imperial Submarine fleet to sea to start searching for other Commonwealthian invasion fleets while also charting trade routes.

The Saratogan Delegation in Onza who is currently discussing a solution to the international tensions has walked out of the talks and departed for Saratoga stating, "This is a sign that the Commonwealth does not want international peace. They are begging for a war that I'm not going to start." Rumors around the Saratogan Embassy in Onza are that the Saratogan Delegation was moments away from signing a compromised peace deal. The Prime Minister also sent a message to the Airtainian President Ward stating, "We will return to the peace table when the Commonwealth removes the 30 million [invasion] force from her nation."

CORE drops to 2 in Mobilization of 46566 Forces

Postby Moarfall » Fri May 15, 2015 2:00 pm

Moarfallian Broadcasting Company; New Babylon Station, Yukon Orbit -

With the recent news of 46566's mobilization of such a large number of troops, military officials felt they were left with no choice, a spokesperson told us earlier today. "46566's intentions are not completely clear. They claim peace while they deploy men to the footsteps of our oldest ally." The same official also stated that they have offered the Saratogans that they would be more than happy to position ships in low orbit over St Saratoga to assist in defense of the nation.

With tensions high in the southwest of Yukon, it comes as no surprise that Moarfall has lowered it's CORE (Combat Readiness) Level down to 2; Reserve mobilization. Reserve troops have been activated and have begun to bolster defense of the nation and run extra patrols. "With no quick resolution foreseeable in this situation, we find it best to raise our shield and be ready for the worst. I would hate to see it come to that, but I don't want to be caught off guard, nor see one of our allies attacked." Another official was quoted just minutes ago.

President calls for calm as troop movements take place, talks stall
ELEPHANTINE, Onza -- President Ward today called for calm as tensions ratcheted up once more in the Airatanian-Saratogan crisis with the announcement of troop movements by the Grand Duchy of 46566 into Airatanian territory. "The deal we have offered them [Saratoga] still stands, but Airatania must be ready to defend itself," President Ward said during a press conference at the Airatanian embassy in Elephantine.

National Armed Forces Command (NAFC) officials say the troops movements are defensive in nature, and had been planned before the peace talks began. Armed Forces spokesperson Adm. Thomas Maddox said that the move was necessary, because Saratoga's military had not shown any signs of standing down, despite the substantial progress during the peace talks. "With the large military of Saratoga on such high alert, right across our border, is was only prudent to make sure we had a way to defend ourselves in the event the talks failed," Maddox said. "We can't and we won't be held hostage with no reassurance of how things are preceding several thousand miles away. We have to be prepared here at home for every possibility."

President Ward, according to reports, has not ordered the Airatanian military to follow suit in raising their readiness level, which Saratoga did in response to the movements by 46566. Saratoga's DEFCON is now at DEFCON 2, which is considered wartime readiness, according to Saratogan media reports. "We won't put our finger on the trigger, so to speak, but we needed to be ready," Ward told members of the media. "We can't just move the troops back out, not with assurances from Saratoga that they will do the same. It's ridiculous to believe that we will just let our guard down now, with no real way to defend ourselves if Saratoga were to move in any way."

President Ward also referenced recent actions by SUN member Nedea, who signed a treaty with Airatania and the Commonwealth last week. "With the Nedean situation, our movements we severely limited before we had time to react. Thankfully, we came to a peaceful solution with Nedea, but I can't allow that same situation to happen again [with Saratoga]. We have to be ready for anything," Ward said.

"The forces from 46566 are purely defensive, there are no two ways about it. I can't be more clear than that," Ward concluded.

CMC Chief of Staff Denies Invasion Plans

Grand Admiral Nobura
The CMC Chief of Staff, Grand Admiral Nobura has today denied the existence of any plans to invade St Saratoga. In a press statement made by the Grand Admiral in Commonwealth City she stated in plain language that the CMC had no plans to mobilise or deploy and invasion force of any kind.

"I recognise that tensions are high, however at this time the CMC has no plans to engage in hostile action against the Saratogan nation or its allies. The deployment of troops from 46566 was purely a defensive measure, undertaken at the request of the Airatanian in concern for their national security. The Commonwealth forces deployed are defensive in nature with no long range offensive capabilities. Though the decisions to declare war or invade are not in my hands or in those of the CMC I must be plain in saying that we have not received authorisation from the CXC allowing us to come within 5 miles of recognised sovereign territory of Saratoga. Furthermore I am not aware of any discussions by the CXC on the subject of invasion; during my last briefing with the Acting Secretary General, Hanlon Ivo of 46566 I was assured that the notion had been entirely dismissed and that the Commonwealth remained devoted to a reasonable, equitable and honourable peace between our peoples and the people of Saratoga."

Emirates Seeks to Become Member of Commonwealth

Postby Onza » Fri May 15, 2015 4:41 pm

Elephantine, Onza - Controversy arose in the National Assembly chamber today after the Senate voted to pass President Khalil Sayyid's bill asking that the United Democratic Emirates be admitted into the Commonwealth - a large, popular alliance.

The controversy, however, stems primarily from the fact that the Commonwealth is a military alliance in addition to an economic one. President Sayyid had the following response, however:

"I'm not quite certain that I understand the controversy that has arisen over this issue. It is stated in our constitution that we will seek out other nations and strive to build relations in order to promote international peace. We as a nation obviously have no military, and thus have nothing militaristically speaking to support the Commonwealth. Instead, we've been granted an exemption from the militaristic side of the alliance, and seek only to prosper from the economic portion; and most of all, the ability to be present during the discussions of one of the most powerful international bodies."

The controversy from the National Assembly came primarily from the Liberal Party, who blasted Sayyid for what they felt was "warmongering." The Assembly, nonetheless, rejected an offer to review the bill as it went through the Senate.

In a press conference following the bill's passage, Vice President Zahra Mu'tamid addressed the crowd concerning the administration's feelings towards the exemption. "We are very happy to seek membership in this alliance, but we are even more grateful that our moral standing with the military is understood by the administrative nations in the alliance. This is, as with anything, work towards establishing a strong, international system of communications which the Emirates is a part of in order to represent the interests of international diplomacy and peace," she said.

President Announces Temporary Stay on Commonwealth Applicati

Postby Onza » Fri May 15, 2015 6:30 pm

BREAKING NEWS

Heliopolis, Onza - Amid controversy concerning the Emirates' application to the Commonwealth, President Sayyid announced a temporary stay on the application until a decision on the matter can be made.

"Unfortunately, it seems that our move to join the Commonwealth was not viewed how we intended amongst some of our neighbors," noted Sayyid. "However, after much internal reflection, we've decided that it is best that we do not jeopardize our existing relations with these allies, particularly when there is likely sound rationale behind their concern," he continued.

Following the announcement, the National Assembly immediately was called into session, and the President and Vice President are currently meeting with legislators to decide what the Emirates will ultimately decide.

"It's unfortunate that this indecision is occurring," noted Vice President Zahra Mu'tamid, who was an outspoken supporter for joining the Commonwealth. "However I respect our President's decision well enough to know that it was with good reason."

International Affairs Minister Baha Ahmed, who expressed deep concern over the application to the Commonwealth, indicated his rationale behind his hesitation. "In order for the Emirates to remain truly neutral, we should maintain a no-alliance policy rather than an all-inclusive one, as in some ways, joining an alliance is more of an offensive move than it is a defensive one," he said.

Prime Minister Jordan al-Maliki is expected to address the nation within the next two days with a final decision on the application, though critics have noted that if a stay was issued, it is unlikely that it will be removed easily.

"Above all, we're dedicated to peace," said Ahmed. "I think we jumped the gun on this one."
