That's what I was mentioning. I was saying use it as a coolant to save weight.

Then. It's realistic. What's your problem with it, then?

Radioactive shielding, and using it as the gas that keeps the airship up, along with using armor, and needing more fuel. Oh, and freezing it.

Thin lead and water? Don't need gas with the jet engines. Fuel is negated due to... Nuclear energy. Don't need to freeze it.

I think the real issue is diverting the nuclear energy into energy for the jet engines... Which... Could be possible with a nuclear reactor.

I'm living on earth.

Ever heard of Chernobyl? No? Three Mile Island? No? Steam explosions? No? Bikini Atoll? No? Any nuclear reactor? No? Nuclear submarines? No?

What world are YOU living on?

The one where swimming in nuclear reactor pools is safe... and where reactor personnel aren't pumping radioactive steam through turbines, they use radiated heat from the reactor to heat water in shielded pipes which then proceeds to turn non-radioactive water into steam which then turns a turbine, condenses and runs through the system again.

They're two different systems, one's a conductor for heat, and the other isn't. both boil and condensate into two separate systems.

Two types of radiation get through vacuums-- light, and electromagnetic. A nuclear reactor produces neither.

It's an aerostat. The lift gases produce enough lift to make it weigh the same amount as the air. You're right DeN. It does have to much drag. It is slow. It is cumbersome. Sounds like a flying naval craft, right? Besides, I'm pretty sure though that dirigibles aren't known for being aerodynamic, or speedy for that matter. The goal wasn't those two attributes, though. The goal was a durable airship suitable for combat against sea-borne or land-borne combatants, and the ability to act as a mobile command position.

URA, no one drinks ammonia. Nor will they breath it. Or swim in it, for that matter.

In a sense you might be.

>steam rises to top of tank and condenses into water again
>ammonia meanwhile becomes floofy gas

Thin lead doesn't work around the actual reactor. Now, using the heat energy in the jet engines is possible, but now you need to somehow direct it into the engines.

You do need to freeze the ammonia. If you want to reuse it for ballast as Shyluz wanted to.

Did you actually read the part where it said that he wasn't going anywhere near the actual irradiated parts? Or that there WERE IRRADIATED PARTS? That he had to wear a protective suit? That there were sectioned off parts? That there was a MASSIVE POOL OF WATER JUST TO KEEP RADIATION OUT?

I'm starting to think you didn't.

Uhh... Heh, that's funny. Because the radiation that comes off nuclear reactors? Well, that's Ionizing. That's electromagnetic. And know what else? All radiation can go through vacuums. Except heat radiation.

Sorry, got to get my two cents in because this is going to bug me otherwise. I'm just going to run a rough pass through and point out anything that I think is wrong based on my knowledge. If I make a mistake, call me out on it, I probably mis-remembered something. Then I'll give my estimate of the feasibility of Luftships.

Shyluz wrote:Thirdly, the ships themselves are not literally balloons-- think more along the lines of a submarine.

Dangerous comparison to make. Submarines and airships are very different because liquid water isn't a gas[citation needed]. Water is incompressible, so as you rise and sink in it the density doesn't change, and density controls buoyancy. Air follows the ideal gas law, so density varies with pressure. So, a submarine can dive as deep as it wants and it won't encounter the "we're too buoyant to go deeper" problem, just the "oh god, the hull caved in" problem. Whereas an airship can have either the "we're not buoyant enough to go higher" or the "oh god, the envelope just exploded" problem.

Correct, for all types of radiation being discussed.

Given all the working reactors, I assume there's a way to deal with gamma waves. You're right that it might be heavy, though.

Light is electromagnetic. So are Gamma waves (alpha and beta particles are particle radiation, but they'll go through vacuums as well). And a nuclear reactor produces both the visual light from Cherenkov radiation (which looks epic) and other electromagnetic radiation.

Isn't that just a word for airship with connotations of being tethered?

I'm always in favor of more airships, so I want to encourage the Luftships. But I'll take it to TGs with Shyluz, because it's not really a PW thing I guess.

Armor is a waste on it. Not that it's feasible, just that you're wasting resources. If your airship has gotten so close as to be taken out with flak cannon or you can no longer rely on active air defenses, then your airship has striven to close. It's the same with a CVN in the water. If your aircraft carrier has gotten so close that it can be taken down with conventional cannon fire, then it's gotten way to close, or your entire defense picket has been wasted and you've already lost.
