Before I throw my support behind any new RP, I'd like to hear how it fulfills the recommendations I mentioned before for preventing PW roleplay death.

Hurtful Thoughts wrote:This appears to be an underlying problem with all our RPs, I suggest we address that.

I think people are posting when they can, and there's not much we can do to change how frequently people can post. Our problem is, though, that a lot of our RPs at least begin with a segment where nothing much is happening and everyone is just killing time until the OP starts the OP. Once we reach a point where all of our teams are on the ground fighting in a city, or our spec ops are kidnaping someone else's spec ops, or something similar, then we aren't relying on any singular person to move the story along, each participant can post what their team is doing without waiting for someone else. In the beginning stage, however, everyone is waiting on the OP, so if the OP is delayed for some reason IRL, it brings the whole RP down.

I'd say our biggest problem is that we rely on one person too much in any given RP, and that we should take steps to avoid that in future. For example:
  • Give a clear map of the location, so people aren't relying on the OP to describe the area.
  • Don't have a lengthy opening where everyone is waiting on the OP at the beginning.
  • Find a way to prevent the OP from having to roleplay all of OPFOR in addition to his own squad. For example:
    • Make OPFOR other players.
    • Allow participants to dictate their own random encounters with enemy forces.
    • Mark OPFOR on the map at the start and then let players roleplay whatever OPFOR their squad encounters.

I think that almost all of the deaths of our roleplays could have been prevented if the measures on this list were enacted. In Helios and Caesar, our squads made it into the action, but once they were there, we had problems doing things because we didn't have a clear map, and it wasn't clear how OPFOR was being controlled. In Dark Sun we are held up right now by an overlong opening (and almost all of our other RPs had very long openings too). Necropolis (I feel) was our most successful operation. It didn't actually finish like Olympia did, but it had the most posts on its IC, and it had by far the most posts actually engaged in action (by my count, only 19 of the 44 posts on Olympia occurred during or after the firefight, all the rest was briefing). Furthermore, I believe Necropolis was so successful because it adhered to the rules I mentioned above. It started with the zombie outbreak, so there was no lengthy briefing; it was on a carrier (which we all roughly know the interior design of), and the locations of zombies, enemies, weapons, and other things like helicopters were all fairly clearly dictated; and the majority of OPFOR was zombies, which everyone felt fine about roleplaying themselves.

I don't know if we would necessarily complete our roleplays if we tried to follow these rules, but I think they would go on for longer at least, and they would certainly have more posts involving actual spec ops action than our other roleplays (In Helios, we have 27 posts before anyone jumps out of the plane, and in Caesar nobody fired a single shot before the roleplay ended).

And now for something semi-related...

In Dark Sun, would it be useful for me to post what my Halian Spec Ops team is doing right now and where they are, so that somebody's team can go and abduct a member of them, and/or should other nations that are going to have their members abducted begin posting what their teams are doing?

It's AP season right now, and finals are probably coming up for some of us, so I'd say its more important than ever that a new RP be as death-proof as possible given the fact that at least some of us will be rather busy IRL for the next few weeks.

I planned for this to take place on Ontorisan soil/maybe one of their island territories (especially Ontorisa Nexus) where active insurgencies commonly attack military compounds and such.

For this, (hopefully on Ontorisa Nexus), a relatively large town is occupied by insurgents and all high ranking officials within the town are captured and held at gunpoint. Both OKR, OKM and ORSV forces respond to the matter but the situation is more dangerous than they thought. Taskforce Atlas would be deployed since the situation requires a more specialized force instead of regular soldiers rushing in and firing at everything. No, the town would have to be infiltrated and the Atlas forces would have to traverse the town, with the intent of rescuing the hostages.

Of course, this would link to one of the large insurgencies in Ontorisa Nexus where Atlas would spearhead an offensive against them and topple their power.

Boom. Who's with me?

EDIT: Aware about the IRL stuff. I should probably be getting ready for exams too instead of posting.

I agree with Cong, we should make the RP "deathless" in a sense. We should also have a backup OP possibly.

That's a fine setting, but it doesn't really answer any of my concerns (clear map, no lengthy intro without action, no waiting on OP to control OPFOR).
  • The map's an easy enough thing to do, it just has to get done before we go into action. All you have to do is find a suitable town on google maps and say "that's how this town is laid out".
  • Overlong intro is a thing that it is probably good to resolve ahead of time. Personally, I'd say that the opening post should be the entirety of the briefing. Have us show up at the edge of the town, the local commander explains the latest intel to us, and we head on in. People can describe their loadouts as they walk into the town. Some have complained about their forces being teleported before, though, and the argument "we might want to enter through some method other than walking in" is not without merit, so I'm open to debating this point.
  • As for OPFOR control, I think the easiest way to do it is to just give a basic description of OPFOR (e.g. "untrained militia using AK-74s, accompanied by a few mercenary officers with advanced Chinese gear") and then let us RP small squads of them as we make our way across town. You might want more detail on the final elite forces guarding the hostages, but honestly if we post working our way through a town filled with enemies to a specific location to rescue hostages, we'll have probably already accomplished more than in any previous PW RP, so we can deal with managing the final OPFOR when we reach them.
None of my comments here mean that your idea is bad, in fact I quite like it, but the untimely deaths of so many prior RPs make me want to be extra cautious when creating a new one.

I don't know who else would be behind this, but as far as a hostage situation I was thinking about a Rainbow Six: Siege type thing as part of it. Thoughts?

Yeah, I plan to do that. I already have the geography and the factions laid out in a previous thread. I'll come up with the town.

If we go through with this of course.

Hey, you guys remember the RP I proposed with the runaway AI? Well, I did say he would he holding a CO of mine hostage. Specifically the one in charge of the military. Why not use that one? Because it's DEN, we really don't GIVE a damn who you kill, and theres a couple thousand, so the first few posts will just be us in a Goliath transport awaiting drop. And It'll just be "Yeah, get this guy out alive, don't do anything stupid."

It wouldn't be really all planned out because, unlike our other RPs, there was NO time for planning. So the people who control it are YOU, not me.
