The battleship sliced through the water. The Ultimatum, fourth of the Halfway Point class battleships, was sleek and elegant. Boasting four 16-inch turrets with three cannons each, the ship's maximum speed was an amazing 60 knots, thanks to modern technology. The ship's cruising speed was 45 knots, however, and that was what it was going at. The U.S. may have removed battleships from their strategy, but that left a niche that Valdiu was eager to fill. On either side were two cruisers, the Riot and the Rampant. Behind them, the troopships Parcel and Posthaste, carrying 1,000 men and 30 tanks, as well as a few attack helicopters. The cruisers Trinity and Anarchy protected them. Leading was the destroyer Capable, and trailing was the destroyer Sight. Below them, the submarines Slice, Slender, Swipe, Sidearm, Switchblade, and Spotter. The Valdian task force was a sight to behold. Battlefleets contained over twice these. The submarines formed a protective barrier, the cruisers' guns pointed outwards to protect against any attacks. Gunners were kept on constant alert, anti-aircraft batteries pointed upwards, searching the numerous radars on board each ship for any unidentified craft. A small detachment of aircraft from the Air Force flew overhead, keeping watch and circling around the convoy. Captain Carter Masle was at the helm. Admiral Richard Simmons had stayed behind in Valdiu. "Nothing on radar, sir." XO Lt. Commander Marcus Telbage reported. "Thank you, Mark. Engine room check," he said into the intercom. The in-ship radio crackled. "Engine 3 is two Fahrenheit above normal. Most likely nothing. All other engines nominal," the reply came. On radar, the task force looked like a small island on the move. Those not on duty were either sleeping or playing cards. The ships were silent. "War Room, Ultimatum. War Room, Ultimatum." "Ultimatum, War Room. Come in, Admiral." Simmons' voice crackled over the inter-ship radio. "All halt. Alert up." Masle was taken aback. "All halt, sir?" "Yeah. These guys are preparing for WAR. We don't want to be in their way for the first strike. After somebody else strikes, we move in." Masle sighed. "Yes sir."
