Imperii Magna wrote:Wow DEN... Seriously? A turbofan, turbojet, and jet engine are all the same thing?!?!?! And they "work on the same principles"? Turbojets, and jet engines, are used for airplanes. I won't go into specifics, but a M1 Abrams, for example, runs on a gas turbine engine. This basically just works like a steam power plant. It just uses air instead of water. It's somewhat debatable whether an absolutely MASSIVE one could power a coilgun, but for a railgun, it definitely needs a nuclear reactor. (I know you're only talking about coilguns, but just putting that out there)

Alright, I was thinking of the wrong thing again.

Regardless, I'm going to wait for Vancon and Padnak's decision on this...

I suppose you have me to rights in the idea that an explanation of effectiveness necessitates an explanation of design. However, I stand by my statement that you answered an easier question than the one posed, as the main issues people took with your design were along the lines of power consumption, reliability, and more. Instead of addressing these issues and thereby putting the debate to rest, you chose to describe what a coil gun was and what size rounds you would use. Neither of these were points of contention, and neither of these resolved any aspects of the debate, so your description did not help resolve MGE's questions or any of the other relevant ones, and I believe it was an attempt by you to evade the question.

Also, what data did I misinterpret? MGE just stated that I understood his question. Did I miss part of your response?

On a side note, I don't actually care how it works or whether it goes pew pew pew. I'm letting others discuss the science, and just calling you out on one of your debate tactics.I'll only step into the scientific part of the discussion if everyone else gets tired and stops challenging you before you present compelling evidence to support your side.

It's just so frustrating when someone who has had multiple pieces of evidence to contradict them, still is very stubborn, and refuses to even do very minimal research. I really don't want to escalate this much further, but DEN, you've already been given a second chance. If I were you, I would take advantage of it and just try to let it go. Also, your signature is extremely ironic and completely accurate of yourself.

Now, yoga breathing time...

EDIT- I just now saw your most recent post, DEN, and while I have no idea what you're referring to when you said you were thinking the wrong thing, I take it as a sign of peace, and support your decision to wait for the opinion of Padnak and/or Vancon.

Oh and everybody, I'm sorry but I may have been ill-informed in an earlier post, where I said coilguns have a lower rate of fire than railguns or conventional guns, but now I'm not sure. It's hard to find information on this.

And the coilgun would be easy to knock out- shoot the coils, take out the wiring, give the computer that's calculating when to fire each magnet a bit of a bump, etc., etc. It just wouldn't be practical.

I use a smaller round because of that.

A capacitator will need ages to be recharged. Also lets not forget that the engine needs to keep all the systems of the tanks running as well as the tank itself. It would be a miracle if you manage to shoot 2 times in an hour. And lets not forget a tank does not have the space needed for a capacitator at its present size.

It's the same thing to a normal person. Turbine, Jet, Turbofan, Turbojet, they all work on the same principles.

That's not what I was talking about at all. I was not talking about the weight of the fucking round. That had no bearing on the conversation. There is literally no way you could have thought that except by deliberate misinterpretation because you knew you were wrong. I was explicitly talking about the viability of a coilgun/Gauss tank-mounted gun, which has nothing to do with how big or small the round is. You said you were using 75mm or 155mm shells, so this really is an irrelevant comment that shows you don't understand what I was saying.

It's the same thing to a normal person. Turbine, Jet, Turbofan, Turbojet, they all work on the same principles.

I've seen some dumb comments made on NS. This isn't the worst (some guy was claiming the greater the mass, the less gravity a celestial body had), but it stacks right up there.

This is PMT nimrod.

Borderline flaming and quite rude. Also, "its PMT" is not a magical password that lets you do what you want.

And Congreveopia... You yourself lack the inability to actually analyze and interpret the data that is in front of you.

Oh, you mean the almost-nonexistent data you've provided? Or the random stuff you've been going on about without any sources, which has little to no relevancy to the question that was asked? Please, tell me which you meant.

Also, this is rude and arrogant.

If you told me to tell you how a gun would be useful, would you want me to tell you how it works? Of course you would! No. Not you, though. You just want to know if it goes pew pew pew.

Yes, I would want you to tell me how it works, although in much more detailed terms than the very vague and broad outline you gave us that describes literally every coilgun on Earth. But I'd also want you to explain why it's effective, which you didn't do at all.

It's a bullet going through a barrel that's being accelerated by an electromagnet. That is entirely possible to put rifling on.

I'm not sure whether or not it would be possible to rifle a coilgun, but I have some doubts about that. I'm going to consider this bullshit until I see a source.
Also, it's not a bullet, and it's being accelerated by multiple electromagnets.

And another thing. I can use a generator to produce electricity, no? And could I not store it up in a rechargeable battery?

Also known as the tank's bloody engine, and a capacitor bank. If you're going to pretend you know about this, try and use the big words.

In conclusion, DEN doesn't know what the fuck he's on about and needs to stop arguing about it. It has been established by literally every other member of the thread and now the OP that your absurd COD-wet-dream weapons systems are completely impractical, PMT setting or no. If you want to use lots of normal-ish weapons and add technical IC shit about how advanced they are, fine. But stop trying to make them actually seem scientifically viable and more powerful.

I'm guessing that Padnak has a lot more influence over Vancon than DEN does, so I'm curious what DEN hopes to gain by rudley insinuating that Vancon is the only OP that matters.

Clarification upon rereading and deciding that my statement's point wasn't as clear as I wanted: Even if DEN thought that only Vancon had authority, it still wouldn't serve his interests to be rude to Padnak, and yet he is. I am curious why he would do this.
