I've got to weigh in here guys.. .What? shooting planets? one should not have the power to shoot planets at a whim, that's beyond mind numbing. However one could turn a planet in to a "free planet" , with the right tech (my people have muddled with that idea) but its... Complicated (lensman reference).

Without using a 'mass effect relay' to jettison the planet around, why not attach a hyperspace to a planet and it could be a moving home/fortress ... it would take maybe a long time, but West-Tek Research could always help kisian contractors ... (This idea was taken from the yuuzhan vong in the star wars galaxy)

Just build a Death Star and cover all the exhaust ports with planks of wood. Problem solved.

Covering the exhaust ports with planks of wood would either cause said planks to catch afire and burn away or build up heat in the Death Star and thus frying everyone inside into nice human pasta.

Edit: You are forgetting Ozymos, the Death Star worked by the power of plot. Trying to figure out ways to make it work are really a futile exercise. Not to mention, building a Death Star took a galaxy's worth of resources. I don't know about you, but I don't have an entire galaxy to suction funds and resources from to build the damn thing.

I find Vader's lack of sense to use a good building contractor disturbing. Imaging the excess on insurance when it came to checking the Death Star for potential hazards.
