Gavin Asterius Is Slain by Senators!

Pro-slavery senators, while in the minority, have assassinated the long-respected, freely elected Praetor Maximus Gavin Asterius on the floor of the Senate House. The Senate has voted to expel the suspected assassins pending their trials. Some 23 senators are believed to be in on the attack.

New elections are being held for the new Praetor Maximus, but it is foregone conclusion that Maximian Regis, the late Praetor's one-time deputy, will get the job. He is running unopposed, in fact.

The new Praetor Maximus will take office on New Years' Day. In the meantime, an Interrex appointed by the Senate will fill the vacancy.

The body of Gavin Asterius is to be publicly cremated tomorrow at dawn. Attendance at his funeral will be free and voluntary, and the senator Maximian Regis has offered funerary games and free grain for the masses in honor of his mentor and sometimes rival. He will also give the main eulogy for the slain leader. The nation is a state of mourning and all senators have taken the unusual step of wearing black togas. The Senate and People have voted to fund the funeral out of the public Treasury, except for the games and food, which Regis himself will donate.
