OOC: For now focus on diplomacy and news reports please.

"There is a time where one must stand up for his nation"-Empress Theodora I of Thomaion.

ImageIt was middle of the day in small village of Utuzuk in mountainous region of Sheljuk, in province belonging to Thomain Empire. The village was small, about few dozens of people living here. But their peaceful existence was torn apart as platoon sized military unit entered the village. The soldiers dressed in so called "tiger stripe" camouflaged uniforms, holding HK G3 assault riffles - at least most of them - entered village in three columns, one quickly securing the village leader' s house, second securing mosque ( as villagers were Islamic ) third secured the main square of village. After shouts "clear" were heard, the platoon leader, lieutenant Konstantinos Likaros ordered to send radio transmission to the command. The commander of the unit came with APC very quickly. Officially, soldiers had to search the houses for members of Islamic People' s Party, muslim militia operating here. But what happened next terrified the young lieutenant. The company commander stood at the square, with the imam and his family. They were the only ones who were found with pamphlet being spread by IPP.

" We need to show this people that sympathy towards IPP will not be tolerated" said the major with strange grin on his face, like he was a madman " take them outside and execute them!"

" But sir!" shouted Konstantinos " we know nothing about connections between them and IPP, besides his fa...."

" You dare to question my orders" shouted the company commander " I will give you under military court if you do not execute them. Choose - they die or you die under execution platoon!" his voice was roaring, echoing like tornado.

Konstantinos had no choice. Imam and his family died moments later, shot in the back of the head. But he could not forgive himself it....

"Today' s elections ended in great victory for Republican Socialist front, which claimed over 49% seats in Parliament. Their victory was mostly caused by fragmentation on right wing scene with Monarchists and National Democrats crashing over whether monarchy should remain. In short, 28% seats were claimed by Monarchist Party, 13% by National democrats, 5% by Neo-Liberal party...."

General Konstantinos Likaros has woken up. He turned his head on TV which was still playing, being set on Imperial News Channel. Now, being in command of 10th Airborne division, one of most elite units in the whole empire, he was an important man. 10th Airborne was the elite. Wherever was hot, they were going in first, always securing important objectives. They were army's elite. Likaros thought for a moment of situation developing in county. He, alongside with military, hated republican coalition. The reason they won was because they had support of major media. But, he as whole military did, loved the Empress. Empress Theodora, now sole survivor of Nikophoros dynasty was reigning alone, with greedy wolves circling around her, trying to take all power away from her, and feast on the fact that everybody has abandoned her. Theodora has finished military academy and flew on Tomcat during her service. She ate the same bread as other soldiers did.

" What motherf****s from this Republican Socialist coalition" said in angry tone Konstantinos. Indeed, he was angry. Empress Theodora was a symbol for the military. And they won' t let her fall.

He dressed up in his uniform and headed for 10th airborne military base, which was 10 kilometers from his house at the outskirts of Alexandroupolis.

ImageThe meeting has begun. All military commanders took seat around a big table, with Strategos - short man with dark hair, with easy and peaceful looking face, but having enormous lack of mercy on his enemies. He spoke with proud voice, telling others what he intends the meeting to be about:

" My fellow military commanders, I address you as a soldier now. Soldier like you. Our county is at the brink of collapse. Republican Socialist coalition wishes to oust the monarchy. We shall not tolerate it. I gathered you here now to discuss what steps should we take to ensure continuity of our nation"

Likaros' s heart was now filled with joy. He has been waiting for such opportunity. For a chance to liberate his fatherland once for good form menace it fallen into. This was this chance.

" Whoever does not agree stand up" announced the Strategos. No one of officers stood up. They were loyal to the crown.

" I have nothing against killing few commies" smiled Radovan Dragovic, commander of Nikolian brigade, one of most elite units in the army " But how will the empress react on it?"

" The Empress will support you" said a female voice from behind Radovan. All looked into it's direction. In the doors there was a woman in ceremonial robes standing, with her beauty making her seem to be shining. Her blonde hair were beautiful, she was example of how woman should look like. But her eyes were full of strength and determination. She was the Empress, After all.

" ... and she will thank you for your deeds, brave patriots. I call you now to duty and to do what is needed to be done. If the republicans remove me, they will make this county hellhole. EYA confirms they are corrupted as hell, my loyal soldiers. It is time for us all to fight for Thomai nation."

" Your majesty" Konstantinos bowed. His dream was now finalizing. Liberation of his county was coming, and a chance to cast away the evil deeds he has committed in the past.

" If everyone agrees, then I will proceed to starting plan of assault on city" spoke the Strategos, revealing a big map of Alexandropolis...

ImageAfter long discussion classic concept was applied. It was called blooming flower - meaning that first echelons of the advancing force were to enter the city avoiding enemy defences and wipe out command posts as well as capture important objectives. Then all out assault was to be launched to wipe out encircled and leaderless enemy.

Police General Nikolaos Dionizios of National Police - formation which unlike military was loyal to the government - was reading a newspaper when a missile struck his police station. After the explosion passed he grabbed his gun and ran towards the window. Slowly, cornering he checked what was outside. It shocked him.

1NAT was trying to assault his station. They were advancing from Exóryxi̱ street and Metallourgia streets, in two columns, one with visible attempt to flank the post and enter through the hole which LAW round made in the wall.

Dionizos ran out and gathered his policemen to fight back. They gave powerful resistance to "traitors" and managed to make them pull back after some time.

" Are they gone" asked Dionizos to one of Policemen from MA, elite police unit assisting them. Then a loud explosion made him to go stunned for a moment, and when he woke up, he realized that he is being held by four soldiers of 1NAT. He realized also what happened: attack from the front was just a deception, real attack happened from the back, using first attack as cover to divert attention. In nearest moments major Police commander in the city was in military hands. The coup was beginning.

ImageTanks rolled into city, crushing any police and government protection services resistance under their tires. The resistance was weak. Enemy was now leaderless and disorganized, surprise attack and loosing of the commanders was big blow to the morale of defenders. But woken up by explosions and shooting, crowds gathered up on main square before the Imperial Palace. Soldiers were there, standing in full gear, prepared to cut the mob from Imperial palace. Then Empress herself - after she got report that the resistance was crushed - appeared on the balcony:

" My dear Thomai " she spoke with calm, yet strong as wind voice " I have enormous evidences of corruption in government which lied to you, which used you for themselves. Today, they are no more. Today you are free. This failed system will be removed. I announce that new era has come to restore Thomai empire! Ελευθερία ή θάνατος ( Liberty or death! )"
With this shout, she left the scene. New era has come!

The Office of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs
On Behalf of Her Majesty the Queen
The Dangish Empire

Dear: Your Imperial Majesty, Empress Theodora of the Thomai Empire
CC: General Konstantinos Likaros, 10th Airborne Division, Thomai Empire
From: The Rt. Honourable Nathaniel Osbourne MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Colonial Affairs, Dangish Empire.
Subject: Changes in Dangish foreign policy in response to the 2014 Thomai coup d'état
Encryption: Public access

Your Majesty,

I am writing as instructed in my capacity as Her Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign and Colonial Affairs, in order to express the displeasure of Her Majesty's Government to hear of the dissolution of civilian government and establishment of military rule in the Thomai Empire. From a legal perspective, no laws have been broken and Your Majesty remains sovereign in her own land. On a more fundamental level, however, the dissolution of civilian government entails the failure of Your Majesty to respect and consider the desires of her subjects.

Unfortunately, it is not within the realm of Her Majesty's Government to interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign countries where these affairs do not pose a threat to global well-being and stability. Nevertheless, it should be clear that a continuation of martial law and military government in the Thomai Empire, or its replacement by an absolute monarchy, will hinder the development of economic, social and diplomatic ties between our two nations. When news of the coup broke, Her Majesty's Government was in the process of persuading the House of Commons to implement economic sanctions on the government of the rogue state of Terra Azure, where Her Majesty's Armed Forces have been operating to maintain peace and order.

I can assure you that Her Majesty's Government has no plans to implement any form of sanctions against the Thomai Empire. It is nevertheless a fact that Parliament reigns supreme in the Dangish Empire and actions which dissuade the House of Commons and the House of Lords from their support of the Thomai Empire should be taken with the gravest caution. In both governmental and parliamentary policy terms, the ideal situation is the restoration of a democratic government in the Thomai Empire.

Hoping you are well,

Yours sincerely,

The Rt. Honourable Nathaniel Osbourne MP
Secretary of State for Foreign and Colonial Affairs

I must address your concerns personally, as they are of grave importance to me, my people, and my empire. I must inform you that no matter how much you will insist, monarchy is what makes us strong, and process of rise of Dominate is upon us. I am going to restore institutions which once made us great, led by our holy faith and great patriots like Gen. Konstantinos Likaros, who know that democracy - as defined by you - is a mob rule and failed system.

The time to replace democracy has come, as democracy allowed corrupt monsters like Anestasios Padouplos' s government ( the SRC leader ) to rise into power. Clearly, democracy represents not the people, but rule of political parties, which differ nothing from street gangs fighting for power. Only a monarch who can stand up upon the so called party politics and stand up for his nation can represent both GOD and HIS NATION. The time has come, the our of restoration of Thomai empire has rung. We shall no more tolerate vileness of so called republican system which once brought almost fall of our nation.

General Konstantinos Likaros as reward for his faithful service will be given title of Consul ( Proxenos ), and will help me change nation. He is one of most brave men I have even met.

I have no plans to dissolve senate nor shall I eliminate advisory organs that exist now: but there shall be NO democracy in Thomaion. Thomaion will rise again, being restored to what it once was: A mighty empire. Nothing else!

Military Coup in Thomai
A military coup sanctioned by the Thomai Empress dissolves the current Thomai government by force.
by Jean Dupont (@j_dupont) | June 5, 2014 15:41 HST

Image
Thomai Empire Forces on the streets of Alexandropolis

Alexandropolis, Thomai Empire - The populace Thomain Empire and all nations of Astyria were taken by shock today as the democratic government of the Empire was forcible dissolved by the nation's armed forces, a move sanctioned by Empress Theodora I of Thomaion. These events transpired on the day the Thomain Empire concluded its elections, with the Republican Socialist Front winning by one percent away from a majority government.

The coup began shortly after the election's results were announced. The announced outcome was that the Republican Socialist Front had won the elections with 49% of the votes, a victory attributed by many to the factionalisation of right-wing parties over the question over the monarchy's role in the Thomai Empire. The Monarchist Party won 28% of the seats, and the National Democrats won 13% of the seats.

Shortly after the results were announced, the capital of Alexandropolis witnessed a military incursion by Thomain armed forces, with many public services such as police forces coming under fire without warning. Witnesses report heavy armament such as missiles and tanks being deployed within the capital city. Within a few hours, the military overtook all resistance with minimal setbacks.

The Thomain empress has sanctioned the coup, promising major governmental reforms to fight corruption and "restore the Thomai Empire". These reforms include the abolishment of the current democratic system. The current government has been replaced by a stratocracy, however, it is unknown whether military rule is a temporary measure or not.

Reports of casualties and of public reaction are scarce, but tension is rising on the international scene as the Dangish Empire criticised the coup and called for a return to a democratic government.

Officials from the His Majesty's Government have not issued any comments on the matter.

Council Roll: All Present as Appointed (as per King's Council of 1995). Seat of the Archbishop of Haguenau is vacant.

HM King Stephen II: I would hope our first article does not come as a surprise to any members of the Council. I am, of course, talking about the Thomain Coup.
Sir Constable Duplessis (Constable of Haguenau): I don't remember the last time I've heard of the Thomains. For some time, I forgot they even existed.
King Stephen II: Yes, well, your incompetency aside, I think you will all agree that this development is completely unexpected.
HG Secretary Dupuis (Foreign Relations): I agree, however, I would wait and see how the populace responds before taking any sort of action. If the populace of the Empire are content with the change, who are we to oppose it?
The Most Hon Secretary Bellerose (Culture & Communications): Considering the outcome of their last elections, I don't think their subjects will be too happy.
Constable Duplessis: Will all due respect, Secretary Bellerose, democracy is a popularity contest. As a governmental system, it's a farce at best. I wouldn't use it as a way to gauge public opinion. If you ask me, their getting rid of their democratic system is nothing but a good thing.
Secretary Dupuis: I wouldn't jump to conclusions, Constable. It may not be a great government system, but as evidenced by some of our Astyrian friends, it can work pretty well under some conditions. I think there's still some merit regarding the outcome of the elections.
King Stephen II: I have to agree with Dupuis, we can't simply ignore the result of their elections. Frankly, I view the entire coup with suspicion. I can understand that drastic measures can sometimes become a necessity, but opening fire on its own public services? The Thomain forces engaged in open conflict in the middle of their capital, without any warning, putting millions of citizens at risk. It's too early to say if this stratocracy of theirs is a bad thing or not, but the way they came into power is... questionable, at best.
Constable Duplessis: They couldn't exactly ask public services to renounce their allegiance to the government, could they? It was a tactical decision to strike them by surprise.
Secretary Dupuis: A questionable tactical decision.
King Stephen II: Tactical or not, they endangered, nay, they opened fire on their citizens. In doing so, they betrayed their trust. I would hardly call that working in the interest of their subjects, and is it not the role of a sovereign to rule in a manner benefiting his subjects?
Constable Duplessis: Point taken.
King Stephen II: I am glad you agree. Now then, since I have heard the opinion of the Council, I shall publish a declaration after today's session. Unless there is further discussion, I move to postpone this article until tomorrow's session, in hopes that new information comes to light by then.
Secretary Dupuis: Seconded.
King Stephen II: How does the Council vote?
(His Majesty and all 11 councilmen vote in favour.)
King Stephen II: The motion passes unanimously. Next on the agenda...

To whom it may concern,

The Federate Duchies of Hagunau have always had a foreign policy where tolerance of diverse political structures is of utmost importance. Never have we seen a political system that can be said to be universally superior. With each set of conditions; culture, economy, geography, &c, certain philosophies prove to function better than others. This belief is based on a fundamental concept, one that defines what it is to be a legitimate ruling body; the consent of the governed. If a governing body is not working with accord to the will of the people it governs, it bears no right exercise any power.

Thus, it is with distress that I have received word of the recent actions of Empress Theodora I of Thomaion and of the armed forces acting under her. When a sovereign declares its own subjects to be the enemy as the Empress has, it betrays the people that have entrusted the sovereign with power over their lives, misled under the guise of a sovereign acting in their favour. How can the Empress claim to rule for the betterment of her nation when she labels her own subjects as enemies, when she treats the capital of her nation as an enemy-held city to be captured? And yet, the Empress is not the only one at fault here. Every military commander, every soldier, that decided to obey the order to attack its own nation has betrayed those whom they swore to protect.

The Empress speaks of liberating the people from those who care only for themselves. What of the families of those who died because they may have posed a threat to the Empress' rule? Has the Empress not become that which she claims to have chased away? In fact, has there been any indication that this coup was mandated per the will of the people, and not that of the Empress?

As a sovereign speaking to a fellow sovereign, and as a human being speaking to fellow human beings, I implore the heads of the current Thomain government to consider what they have done, and to what end. A great mistake has been made, but it is not too late to rescind it.

Greetings, on behalf of the Za'im of Riysa, Tawfiq al-Hiwari,

We are currently monitoring the situation and find ourselves taking a neutral position, although we applaud your decision to limit the spread of the socialists, who would have led the country into destruction had they managed to enjoy and use their newfound power.

Before we can make a firm decision on who to support, we currently wish to know more about is your domestic policy - what do you plan on implementing for your people, what types of freedoms do you plan on granting them, etc. After that, we can then declare our support for any side, but again as of now, we shall remain quite strongly neutral.

Thank you for your concern, but I must dismiss your claims about me making mistake or about the fact that the coup does not represents my nation. For the first: Thomaion was great when it was absolute monarchy. All astyrians were once talking about Thomai splendour: now, we are not even quarter of what we once were. In order to bring back the old days and restore the empire we must renounce thing that made us weak: Democracy.

I believe that democracy is rule of Hyenas over Donkeys, but that is not the issue. The issue is that Ambrosios Padopulos' s government based around SRC was corrupt and willing to remove monarchy, which will bring downfall of the empire. Our county is not ethnically one. There are diverse people in the Empire, and the institution of Monarchy is what is spoiling factor of our nation. Without monarchy, we will break. Now, we are one, diverse nations united in one big empire for common defence against evil. About 70% of us are Thomai, rest are Zhaymyrians, Cecilians, Mlekans.... I now united them all against evils of socialism.

More to come, government of SRC was corrupt. There were enormous bribes given to police commanders. SYP ( Military Intelligence Service ) is aware of this corruption and attempts to create secret network in my county to bring Socialist to unlimited power. I shall not tolerate it. Thomaion will rise again!

Thank you for your concern. My policies are based on Authoritarian Conservatism, Monarchism, Mixed economy and social justice. I intend to reject failed system known as democracy, which brought all plagues of Egypt upon us all, and replace it with authoritarian system which will serve it' s people. Monarchy will be that system. I do not intend to liquidate republican institutions like Senate, but allow them to remain as advisory bodies. All political parties except National Monarchist Coalition " Phalanx" will be ordered to dissolve. NMC will dissolve after being transferred into new Senate, which will help me in my rule.

In economic Sphere I intend to eliminate trade unions and replace then with vertical trade unions focusing on both employers and employees, and create true mixed economic system. My idea is to create dirigirist economy, where certain companies will receive backing from state in exchange for carrying my plans in key industries. Banks will be nationalized and loaning on interest banned, to keep our people safe from Banker' s schemes.

In social sphere I am aiming at eliminating poverty as much as I can. There will be religious tolerance, but Orthodox Christianity will be given status of special religion, as it is basis of our culture which I am going to preserve. I also plan on elimination of communism. However, no genocide shall take place and no death camps shall exist here.

Good Evening,
On behalf of Her Imperial Majesty, we would like to inform Your Majesty regarding recent events in your country.

Following the coup within your nation in which Your Person usurped the lawful powers of the democratic government, the United Kingdom is frankly disappointed regarding your decision in restoring order. While we have come to understand that to prevent the spreading tentacles of tyrannical socialism You must take extreme measures, we regret the actions by which you denounce democracy and freedom. Democracy, as an institution, is by nature neither efficient nor effective as a means of government. But it is most certainly an expression of the sentiments of the people. You may scoff at such reasoning, but there must be a fundamental reason why democracy in your nation has led to such disastrous consequences and it must be that the people no longer believe that the current democratic system is one that will best serve their interests and that reforms must take place.

Our sources indicate that Your government blames the corruption of the Socialists and their desire to further weaken your people by making them dependent on government for everything. You are right to prevent a total takeover of government by the Socialists, as such a move would be illegal by even democratic standards. However, Your Majesty has used this opportunity to wipe out democracy in totality, something which the United Kingdom finds disturbing.

By instituting Yourself as an absolute monarch, you leave the dubious issues of the quality of rulers who will succeed you. History has shown that absolute monarchies are only as strong as their rulers are, and not every leader is made of the same strength that You are made of. Greed, jealousy, and intrigue are often the biggest detractors to the functioning of an absolute monarchy.

Democracy alleviates such issues by making the office holders accountable to the public. If they fail to carry out their duties, then they are voted out. If Your Majesty believes that such a system cannot prevent the Socialists from taking total power, then something must have been wrong with the democratic constitution of Thomai even before Your coup. Therefore, stringent reforms must be put into place, for example independent accountability offices, proportional representation instead of a party system, safeguards on the monarchy as a permanently protected institution, and so on.

With this in mind, we urge you to reconsider sliding your nation into the hands of tyranny from military rule.

Thank you for your concern, but your claims are untrue. I can not say I agree with them, even if you raise few valid points, which are interesting in itself, but in my opinion simply untrue. I have been monarch living in democratic system and I know how democracy works like. First, democracy does not works like you stated. In many constitutions there is a statement that the elected are not bound by voter' s instructions. This was one of paragraphs of our constitutions ( which was few hours ago abolished by me, as it was halting our reforms ). Furthermore, how can you state that democracy is "rule of the people" when it are not people but parliament who rule. What about political parties who form their own mini-democracies, where you can not ascend without obeying party leader? Both party and representative are vulnerable to lies ( and thrust me, politicians know how to lie ) and corruption. Political parties differ northing from street gangs fighting for power, and will have no place in my county.

Excuse me, I do not intend to offend you: but how can you say that democracy is rule of the people, when not the people but Parliament makes decisions? If 51% votes yes, and 49% no, is this that "people's rule" or "tyranny of majority"? 49% will be oppressed, and this is many people. In democracy as defined by your majesty, only right people have is to choose which part of elite they want to rule them.

Since we all know that direct democracy is unachievable, and representative democracy is a fake, we must find system which represents not only people, but God. I stand above whole "party politics" which weaken the rule. My word is the law, because now nobody will be bothering me with their so called party politics. Even so, I do not plan to liquidate the senate, as it is integral part of our tradition. But if they want to be elected to act as my advisers, they will be elected by people from their themes ( OOC: Theme - administrative unit ), not by political gangs called political parties. I urge you to rethink my words. Democracy is neither a right nor the best system.

With that being said, we will continue to monitor the situation closely, as well as your actions afterwards to help us determine whether we must intervene, or stay isolated. As of now, Bankampar will abstain from conflict until given reason to act otherwise.

ImageUSG operators reached the Basilea kai Thomaion via plane. They landed officially as new gear for Thomai armed forces. Upon the dawn, the planes have landed on the airfield. The base was near mountainside, in beautiful environment. Majestic mountains were nearby, making them feel dwarfed by their size. USG operators felt also clear morning air. After they disembarked from the plane, hordes of technicians came to it, to refuel it. Then, a row of trucks came; they were driving towards the Uli mercenaries. Mostly military models, painted in dark green. They stopped in front of USG mercenaries. From the trucks a tall older man came, in uniform of Stratonomia, the military police. Stratonomia, unlike other police units, was loyal to the Empress. They were her sword on criminals, and always will be. Soon, the old man, who despite his age had a posture like he has been wrestling with Alligator for whole his life exchanged salutes with USG leader and ordered them to get on the trucks. Vehicles drove them to big buildings which was their temporary quarter, where they will sleep the night. After all, until planned coup one day remained. The Regular Mercenaries were ordered to get to quarters they were assigned. It were big four - five men rooms, where they could sleep this one night. The commanders as well as Sanchez were asked to go to the office of the base commander.

ImageThe office was big room, which could hold even a dozen of people. Not only it was enormous, it was also well decorated. On the walls one could see paintings of greatest victories of Thomai army, as well as ancient weaponry, serving now as decoration. In front of long table staying in the middle was sitting small man, with smile on his face which had oval shape, with his green eyes observing USG command team. He was famous general Karolos Lymaros, one who commanded 1st naval infantry brigade. One of most famous and bloodied thomai formations. With him was the same man as the one who talked with USG mercenaries to their quarters: his name was Nikiphoros Dukas, and was commander of local stratonomia regiment. Both of them expanded a big map on the table, and begun to speak:

Image"Gentelmen" smiled Lymaros "thank you for accepting our offer, we appreciate it. We will now go to details of the mission" Lymaros was professional and grim, that was his nature. He rarely showed emotions.

"We intend to use opening the lotous on this city. This tactic was successfully used by VCs, was tested and is useful in our situation. You, our dear contractors, will be entering the city as first echelons alongside our forces to capture most important objectives. We give you initiative how to do it, but here are the orders. You have to capture radio station in the centrum. I guess you know it, so I will go to the details: "
Here Dukas spoke:

"Radio station is three flour building in the rich district. It is mostly along row houses, which are small houses connected to each other via wall. They are usually not high when it comes to it. The radio is standing as last outside the row, but there is small open area in front of it, which you will have to cross somehow. Since they were incidents there, it is being guarded by Worker's Guard. Paramilitary units, not well armed but zealous as hell. Inside the building looks like that" here Dukas finished his speech and shown a map:
