OOC: Role play is open to any who wish to participate. This will be stage one of an ongoing story line involving Angbhand. A little history first: Angbhand is a fairly large island nation comprised of several different ethnic groups. The Ang, the Duinn, the Hastat and, the Coroth. Prior to the establishment of the Empire each ethnic group controlled a portion of the nation and operated autonomously. Throughout the history of the empire the Ang and Duinn have been dominant, the Hastat neutral and the Coroth hostile towards the government. There has always been a slow burning insurgency within the Coroth native provinces but recently attacks have become more bold. OOC Thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=297859

Angbhand, City of Nacht 2014 AD

The President announced today that further development of the eastern Corothian provinces would continue despite resistance and protests from the inhabitants of these areas. In response to the demonstrations in the Corothian provincial capitol of Hyperion President Nacht has dispatched elements of the 4th Infantry Division for what the government is calling Operation Firebrand. Officially it has been labeled as a peacekeeping and police action. However, reports on the ground indicate that both sides have engaged in prolonged firefights in the streets of Hyperion and accusations of human rights abuses have been made by both sides. The Corothian insurgency continues to hold most of the city but Imperial troops are gaining ground. The government has barred journalists from entering the area so independent confirmation of these events is not possible. Most of the information from Hyperion is being posted by residents on social media websites.

Seeing to the fact that the original inhabitants of what you now call the "Corothian Provinces" have protested against your "development" of their territory, yet, despite their clear showing that they do not want you there, you invaded their capital city, Hyperion; the United Kingdom of Hayabusa is dispatching the 7th Royal Arkan Fleet to the coast of Native Coroth territoires to reinforce the resistance. We will also be sending the 256th Defense Infantry Division to Hyperion to fight against Imperial Forces. We will make our best efforts to keep the native lands free of imperialism and put a stop to the imperialist onslaught in the lands as well.

This is a blatant violation of our national sovereignty and any further provocation will result in severe retaliation. This is an internal matter between the citizens of Angbhand. The Corothi insurgency is a terrorist organization that does not distinguish between legitimate military targets and the civilian populations of our nation. We repeat: withdraw your military forces immediately or we will have no choice but to defend ourselves.

Fighting continues in Hyperion. Imperial forces have reportedly begun shelling the outlying districts in an attempt to flush out suspected insurgents. Reports from inside Hyperion put the death toll at over three hundred with many more wounded, though this could not be independently verified. Insurgent leaders have posted demands for the immediate withdraw of all Imperial forces from Corothi provinces and recognition as an independent state. The Imperial government has not made an official reply to these demands as of yet.

The Corothian provinces are currently closed for reasons of security. Food relief is a priority for all citizens affected by the turmoil in the Corothian provinces. Any attempt to enter Angbhand's territory will be viewed as a violation of our sovereignty. We will make all efforts to interdict any attempt to enter the Corothian provinces or the city of Hyperion until this conflict is resolved.

The situation in and around Hyperion continues to devolve into a stalemate with both sides digging in for a more concentrated offensive. The entire 4th Infantry Division with support from the 18th Cavalry Regiment are now massing for a major assault. Reports from inside the city are sporadic, but videos posted online show militants barricading themselves and preparing for the inevitable attack from Imperial forces. A large number of the civilian population has attempted to leave the city but has been turned back by Imperial forces for fear that the insurrection will spread to other provinces sympathetic to the Corothian cause. Shelling continued for most of the night as Imperial forces sought to soften up the entrenched insurgents.

Hyperion, Province of Coroth

Elements of the 4th Infantry Division with support from the 18th Cavalry Regiment have begun to push into the city, engaging militants in sporadic firefights as they attempt to clear a path towards the commercial district. The insurgents have launched a series of harrying attacks to try and slow the advance of the Imperial forces, using IEDs, mortars and various shoulder mounted anti-tank weapons. There has also been a fair amount of small arms fire exchanged between the advancing forces of Angbhand and pockets of insurgents. Civilians in the area are attempting to flee and many have become caught in the rapidly escalating crossfire.

Today at 0800 local time the Angbhand military was put on high alert in response to threats from various nations in the area seeking to intercede on behalf of the besieged Corothian population. All branches of the military began to mobilize in preparation for a possible invasion from external forces. Coastal defenses readied themselves and Angbhand's 1st and 9th fleet were recalled from peacekeeping operations in other regions of the world.

Anti-aircraft batteries in Nacht, Farholm and Duinnholm were brought online and Civil Defense forces were put on standby in most major cities.

Hyperion, Province of Coroth

As the rest of Angbhand readied itself for war the battle already raging in the streets of Hyperion bogged down into house-to-house fighting as the armor was immobilized by various anti-tank weapons and the close quarters of urban combat. A steady stream of injured and dead flowed back to the rear from the front line. In a bid to break the stalemate Imperial forces began shelling the city itself with total disregard for the civilians still trapped inside. The number of civilians attempting to flee the city continued to grow as the fighting spread outwards. Units from the 4th Infantry Division continued to do their best to halt this evacuation.

Angbhand's eastern coast was lightly defended. Shore batteries opened fire for a few minutes before being silenced by the bombardment from the hostile fleet. Local ground forces moved to within a few hundred yards of the beaches and began setting up their crew served weapons and entrenching themselves in preparation for the assault. They were lightly armed, nervous and commanded by relatively inexperienced officers. Word had been sent back to Strategic Command in Nacht that reinforcements would be needed immediately and Command had begun to divert several divisions, freshly mobilized, to the area.

As the Barsovich helicopters penetrated the air space over Hyperion they were met with concentrated AAA fire. The 4th Infantry Division had begun to pull back from the city in an attempt to regroup for another push. Within hours of the coastal bombardment Command issued new orders to the 4th: form a defensive cordon around Hyperion and wait for reinforcements.

Command began diverting the 8th, 7th and 15th Infantry Divisions to Hyperion, intent on squashing the insurrection quickly. Two armored divisions, the 3rd and the 19th were also re-routed to the besieged city. In the skies above Hyperion jets from the 41st Fighter Wing began to appear and hunt for targets.

The 7th Royal Arkan Fleet made its way through the night in complete stealth, complete silence in all elements. They every so slowly approached the coast of Anghband. At this point, the Arkan Fleet was just out of seeing distance.
Commander Drew Burns, at 11:46 PM, ordered the first movement of the attack to begin.
The Arkan Fleet wasn't attacking the Coroth Provinces, no - they were attacking the north coast of Anghband, in an effort to draw imperial forces away from Corothian Provinces.
It all began when a very silent and very low rumbling was heard approaching the heavily defended coast of Anghband. The night sky had an eerie dim light behind the clouds, barely illuminating the entire scene. Enemy spotlights shined through the clouds, but weren't able to detect anything. The B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers were flying at their highest capable altitude, and were virtually undetectable without high tech equipment.
The B-2 Spirits used laser guiding systems to drop their incendiary bombs over the Anghband coastal defense.
The fire lit up the sky, and it almost seemed beyond daylight for a slight moment. While this was happening, the 500 A-10 fighter craft of the 7th Royal zipped inward towards more inland defenses that may have been placed. Once the 7th Royal had control of the coast, the 256th Defense Infantry Division would be deployed into Hyperion.

I'm sorry, but you are a complete godmodder. There is no way a fleet can move in 'complete stealth' as you say. It's impossible. Second, your invasion force would make your economy buckle. The fact that you have 2,500 active Abrams tanks is insanity to be quite honest. You need to revise.

Meh. Maybe I should reword it differently. I didn't mean complete stealth, I meant silence. Silence: Radio silence, extremely slow movement, radar jammers etc. Basic stuff.
As for the tanks, I would have to agree. Revising that.

EDIT: Also changed the BMP force as well. Wasn't thinking clearly other night, obviously.

Official Message from the Valaran Empire

The Valaran Empire has decided that although both sides have conducted violations, it appears that the response of the Monarchy of Hayabusa and the Grand Republic of Barsovich is completely disproportionate to the problems within Angbhand. Therefore, we have decided to send a relief force to Angbhand to help stave off these attempted invasions, until they see sense and return to dialogue to end this problem. This shall consist of 2 infantry divisions (20,000 men), one mechanized division (10,000 men with rapid transport), and one armored division (120 tanks + support), along with aircraft, to be transported by the Valaran navy.

OOC: I didn't think hayabusa was god-modding that much; they attacked form an unexpected direction so it is plausible that they may have been undedected. The only thing is that altitude won't protect against radar, so there should be some form of interception by Angbhand aircraft once the sortie had been completed

OOC: It is possible to get fairly close to shore without being detected, depending on whether there are naval and AWACS patrols and such in the area (there likely would be). It extremely unlikely that a fleet could make it within sight of shore undetected. If Angbhand has radar stations or AWACS in the area, it's virtually impossible; if you're within visual range, you're well within radar range as well.

He might not use NSTracker or whatever for his economic stats, so he could easily be capable of deploying a force of that size.

The government of Angbhand claims that they're fighting terrorists to regain control of the city and restore order. Neither source is trustworthy enough to act on without more information. We need to check into this alledged terrorist group, and look into these allegations of corruption and oppression in the Angbhand government before we draw any conclusions."

"What we do know for certain," put in Lumiel Hayetir, head of military intelligence, "is that two other nations have attacked Angbhand with military force. They claim they're defending the people of Hyperion and the surrounding territory, but the speed of their response suggests ulterior motives. If we haven't been able to get the complete picture of what's going on over there, it's unlikely they've had time to conduct a complete investigation either. Their willingness to invade without a clear understanding of the situation is rather suspicious. King Eldahir nodded. "Not the most creative scheme, but it could be effective. Obviously, we can't allow this underhanded imperialism to go unchecked, but we can't ally ourselves with a violent and oppressive government either. We need to know if the allegations against the Angbhandian government have any truth behind them before we can declare our support for them."

"Not necessarily." Lumiel replied. "Regardless of any allegations against their government, Angbhand is a sovereign nation. These other nations are invading them without provocation, and we can't just sit back and let that happen. Besides, supporting Angbhand would make it easier for us to gather information about the specifics of the situation."

Admiral Arendil, commander of the Navy, nodded in agreement. "She's right. Even if the government is corrupt, we can't just let Angbhand be taken over. We need to stop the nation from being torn apart before we can work on any kind of government reforms."

"What do you suggest?" asked Eldahir.

"We do something similar to the Lolloh situation." Spoke up Air Marshal Vilyatair. "Secure Angbhand's sovereignty while investigating the internal situation. Once that's done, we can remove the old government from office if necessary, and help the people set up a democratic government."

"Deal with the external threat first, then handle the internal one." Lumiel summarized. "The invasions represent a clear and present danger to the people of Angbhand; we need to deal with the visible threat first. The presence of our troops will also provide some security against government oppression, just by being there."

Eldahir nodded. "Our first concern must be to protect the civilians." He agreed. "Arendil, how fast can we get a naval force to Angbhand?"

"The light carrier group attached to the Lalath is on excercise a few hundred miles to the northwest of Angbhand." Arendil replied, consulting his records. "They're with the 2nd Command Fleet, E21CL2. I'll reroute the Lalath there now, and have the rest of 2nd Fleet start mobilizing for deployment, just in case."

"Alright," Eldahir said. "I'll notify the Angbhandian government that we're ready to assist them, if they so wish."

Eastern Coast of Bratisva Province, Angbhand

The Barsovich assault would meet with little resistance initially. The few defenders scattered before the advancing Marine forces, engaging in sporadic close range firefights when the opportunity for ambush presented itself. The few armored vehicles in the area were quickly immobilized or destroyed. Several hours after the initial landing Angbhand's armed forces would finally rouse themselves from the shock of the invasion. As the Barsovich big guns opened up Angbhand's howitzers and self-propelled guns would respond as the combat turned from small infantry engagements into an artillery duel. Several Paladin guns were destroyed, as were a number of towed howitzers but the bombardment continued unabated as Angbhand's infantry dug in and awaited reinforcements and further orders from Provincial Command.

Overhead elements of Angbhand's 33rd Fighter Wing engaged the encroaching fighters and bombers, fighting a desperate but losing battle. Angbhand had been caught totally unprepared by the swift invasion and was struggling to organize it's assets to meet the attacks. The pilots knew they couldn't drive off the attacking aircraft but they struggled to delay them as long as possible. Twelve planes were lost in the first 24 hours of the fight leaving only a handful to contest Barsovich's air superiority in the area.

Hyperion, Angbhand

Ground forces quickly moved to secure the crashed helicopters, attempting to capture any survivors for interrogation about troop strength and orders. The damaged and unscathed helicopters might be able to find a safe LZ in the nearby farming communities some 15 kilometers from the ragged cordon that the 4th had built around Hyperion in an attempt to prevent any insurgents from leaving the city. A few short firefights raged during the long day but there was no major push by either side as they turned their attention to what was occurring in the rest of Angbhand, waiting to see whether or not Imperial forces would be able to drive off the invaders.

Province of Hastat, Angbhand

The 7th Arkan fleet would encounter little resistance in the sparsely populated north. Early warning systems had detected the fleet but there were simply not enough troops mobilized in the area to mount a successful defense. Pockets of AA fire roared up into the sky along with a few missiles but for the most part the coast was silent as the fleet closed in and bombed the abandoned defenses. Most of the troops had pulled back into the cities and towns within the province, using the civilian population as a shield against indiscriminate bombing. Word was sent back from Strategic Command that all Imperial forces were to hold, dig in and await reinforcements.

After the absolutely massive bombardment, Hayabusan Royal Soldiers looked upon the coast of which they were about to invade. The beach was preserved, but nearly all behind it was flattened and/or on fire. There were small areas along the coast of which there was movement. Imperial Troops.

Commander Drew Burns was ready to initiate the next step of the coastal invasion.
"Launch the infantry first. Once they hit the coast, then launch the BMPs. Once they hit the coast, send in the Abrams. All battleships and destroyers, await further orders."

The 36,500 Royal Marines promptly loaded into the massive deployment watercrafts, huddled together in the gym-size spaces. All was silent. Some were praying, some were looking at family pictures, some were doing their pre-battle routine, and some were just silent.

They lurched forward suddenly on the way to the Hastat beaches.

5 minutes later...
The watercrafts abruptly stopped, the gates slowly opened.

The soldiers hit the beach, charging forward towards the defenders in a bravado of commanders giving orders, and shouts all around the place.

A light carrier group operating a few hundred miles to the northwest of your coast has been directed to your assistance. They are already within engagement range of the Hayabusan fleet, and are only waiting on AWACS to confirm their identity. A larger naval force is currently being mobilized for departure to Angbhand. You may expect their arrival within 48 hours off your western coast. An Amphibious Assault Group is also being dispatched to assist your ground forces, and should be arriving in under 72 hours.

If you can provide us with an airbase, we can land a small airborne force in Angbhand within 6 hours. While this force won't be able to hold back the Hayabusan advance, they will provide valuable reconnaissance and tell our bombers where to drop their bombs. We will also send a small force to help maintain control of the situation in Hyperion.

Light aircraft carrier MNS Lalath:
"Captain, Hawkeye 1 just confirmed positive ID on the Hayabusan ships." called a CIC officer. "Twenty-five major warships: 10 carriers, 10 destroyers, and 5 unknown larger types – possibly cruisers."
"Very well," replied the Captain. "Comm, instruct the Calaren and our two destroyers to target the nearest 5 carriers. Launch Fëanars, 2 missiles each."
"Yes sir," said the Comm Officer, turning to carry out the orders.

The RGM-111 Fëanar was a long range anti-ship and land-attack cruise missile developed to replace the Navy's Tomahawk missiles. The stealthy missile was capable of striking targets out o 1,000 miles away. After launch, the missile would climb to 80,000 feet and cruise at around mach 0.9 for most of its journey. At a range of about 100km, the Fëanar would dive to sea-skimming height to avoid radar detection by hiding below the radar horizon, accelerating to mach 2 in the process. The stealthy design, combined with its supersonic attack run, made the missile very difficult to shoot down, as it left the enemy with a bare handful of seconds to react. Naturally, AEW aircraft would give the enemy a better chance to detect the missile earlier, but if not shot down, the Fëanar's 1000 pound warhead was capable of crippling almost any ship. A fairly recent development, this would be the RGM-111's first use in combat.

Aboard the Fëacir-class cruiser Calaren, six RGM-111s were keyed to the coordinates provided by the E-2D Hawkeye monitoring the Hayabusan fleet from over 300 miles away. Two missiles were targeted at each of three Hayabusan carriers. The two Telerin-class destroyers accompanying the carrier group each targeted 2 RGM-111 Fëanars at another carrier, for a total of ten missiles targeted at 5 of the Hayabusan carriers.

Abruptly, VLS cells aboard the three ships burst open. A column of flame roared up from each cell, and the ten missiles were on their way. In about 30 minutes, they would reach their targets.

Seven C-5 Galaxy transports and a pair of C-17 Globemaster IIIs rolled down the runway, accelerating until they finally lifted off. The formation adjusted its heading toward Angbhand, accompanied by a pair of F-15s flying escort.

"It appears, that in conjunction with the initial insurgency, there are now two invasions of Angbhand. One to the east, lead by Barsovich, and we now have unconfirmed reports of a large Hayabusan force to the north as well. The Barsovich force is the more immediate concern. They are closer to the insurgency as well as to our own forces. We need to drive them out before we can secure the area and conduct dialogue with the rebels and Angbhand govt. However, the greater priority for us at the moment is getting our soldiers on land safely. The invading forces may start to set up a blockade, and they also may have submarines, which could start to pick off our forces.We need to secure a beached with minimum casualties." answered Lieutenant Halstan.

"Enemy air strength?"

"It appears occupied, but they may also launch a sortie on us."
