Chirping of Birds [Closed, Sondria Only]

Region: Sondria
Nation: Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanor
Coordinates: N/A
Specific Location: Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa/Paraksani Border

Birds chirp near the border. You can hear them wherever you go, much of the area is dense woodland. All sorts of creatures that call the forests home can be observed and studied. For several decades much of this area was like a honey trap for all kinds of researchers. They would come to study the flora and fauna, and then they would never leave. Because they were often in the ground. The local 'militias' never appreciated people having a look into what they considered their woods. To them, it wasn't controlled by either Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa or the Republic of Paraksani. But, the kidnappings and killings of several Māori researchers a few years ago had drawn the intense ire and hatred of a nation that would not allow such a thing to occur, to allow some 'freedom fighters' to get away with something so disrespectful. When it had primarily been foreigners it wasn't a concern, although the occasional retribution killing was often done to make up for it.

But for the children of Tane-Māhuta, for one of their own to be taken, such a thing could not be allowed. Paraksani had never been too concerned with these groups, they had some kind of ethnic connection with each other, and they rarely took people from the other side of the border. But Paraksani had failed to even attempt to mitigate the problem. Broken promises lay on the diplomatic floor as Paraksani simply shrugged and claimed it wasn't their problem. It reached a tipping point when they had refused to let Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa perform strikes in Paraksani territory, since that was where most of these milita bases were based. As a result, Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa simply shrugged its shoulders in return and started moving forces to the border.

Originally, this border had been lightly manned. Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa had never feared an invasion by the Republic of Paraksani, and there had never been a need for large concentrations of troops there. Kaitiaki had often found themselves there, as this kind of warfare had been best suited to them, and they had been successful. The inability to move across the border though meant they could never fully demolish the enemy. Although every time they engaged in a fire fight there was little left of the milita forces, they never had the opporunity to finish their mission to a satisfactory conclusion. Now, however, they would get an opporunity.

And not just the Kaitiaki would be able to take part in some aggressive action. The entire Ngāti Tumatauenga would have a role to play in this upcoming conflict. Besides two hokowhitu worth of Kaitiaki to take part in the initial phase of the war, three Taua Groups were deployed, as well as innumerable assets from Taua Ea and Taua Moana. Equipped with the latest equipment, many of these forces would begging for blood, straining at the leash. The Taua Ea had some new toys it wanted to unleash, but the Paraksani Air Force wouldn't even be a match for the FM.29A in service, so the new F.25M wouldn't be used in this conflict, at least not initially. The designers still wanted to tinker with it as they always do, although it had reached combat capability some months ago.

Still, the FM.29A, known affectionately as the Pīwaiwaka in service, was to begin this operation. The backbone of the Taua Ea, the FM.29A would serve as the tip of the spear alongside the Kaitiaki on the ground, who were responsible for removing the ground-based early warning radars and SAM systems. Once those were eliminated, the assault could begin in earnest.

---

Birds chirped that night, but the men weren't sure what it was, they weren't really paying attention to it though. The noise just faded into the background orchestra that is the night life of a forest. Just as they disappeared into the surroundings. Paraksani Army personnel were sitting around, having some smokes whilst they gazed at they gazed at the stars and talked about there poor rations, as they usually did. It was a complaint that pretty much every member of any armed force was well aware of. But despite this sloppy showing, the equipment the Paraksani forces were protecting was certainly no joke. The S-300 was a very potent system, and would have to eliminated. Paraksani was said to have over 30 S-300s in service on the border, and as many as a dozen S-400 were also in operation. They had to be eliminated as quickly as possible, to ensure that the Paraksani forces would have minimum time to react tot the sudden elimination of much of their Air Defence structure. The Taua Ea should be able to handle the Paraksani Air Force should they decide to throw down in the skies. These men were protecting this S-300, a platoon of roughly 30 men. Originally a whole company, the Kaitiaki had made sure to destroy those forces stationed further afield.

There was a quiet cough, and one of the Paraksani men slumped over. He had been asleep, and it appeared his comrades thought he had simply fallen off in his slumper and laughed. One even pulled out a smartphone and took a selfie with him and his now apparently sleeping friend. The laughter stopped however when selfie mans head decided to explode during his photograph taking. While his phone was falling the Paraksani forces started looking around, getting agigtated. To be expected. The rest of the Kaitiaki opened fire with their standard-issue LY21 AHLAR, the assault rifle of the entire Ngāti Tumatauenga. They never even had a chance, with less than 10 seconds passing all 30 men were dead, or so severely injured they would die very quickly.

The smartphone lay lying on the ground, on its cracked screen an image of a Paraksani man and his apparently sleeping friend. He had never known his friend hadn't even been alive. The roar of turbines could be heard overheard as the FM.29A moved into Paraksani airspace to destroy any multitude of targets.

The birds chirped that night.

Sondria;
Telrania;
Northwest of Baratan Peninsula
Far East Command;
Crontorian 135th Combat Fleet:

The Crontorians had left Telrania. With the closure of Fort Bastion and Fort Artemis, the deconstruction of defensive assets, and the pullout of forces previously stationed at the aforementioned installations an agreement previously brokered with the United Empire was terminated. Soldiers and personnel were also pulling out of their bases, having secured rights to base forces at a handful of Crontorian installations both on the mainland and in the Anchli Isles, bases that would now host only Crontorians or Triad forces. But the strategic loss for the CAF was far greater than any benefits enjoyed by the UE. The United Empire benefitted from extensive holdings on Telrania which the Imperial Federation or its allies in the Triad could not match.

For a nation determined to maintain peace and security within Sondria, bases spread far and wide were vital to this mission. As useful and flexible the deployment of naval forces could be to any political or military situation, military installations stood as permanent reminders of the Crontorian presence in any given region and reminded locals about the steadfast Crontorian commitment to not only their security, but to that of Sondria as a whole. But politics and budgetary concerns had led to the closure of Bastion and Artemis, robbing the CAF of a great deal of their operational capacity in the Far East. The Operational Combat Command (OCC) designated to the geographic area was FARECOM or Far East Command, formally based at Fort Bastion, had been effectively terminated. These forces were distributed among Eastern Command, Southern Command, and Southeastern Command while FARECOM’s commanders and staff found their new headquarters temporarily assigned to Fort Bahren, which was now the Imperial Federation’s easternmost installation.

Fort Bahren was one of the largest Crontorian military installations in Sondria, the entire 275 square kilometer island belonging to the CAF and hosting the headquarters of Southeastern Command responsible for operations in and around Aerus and the expanse of ocean to the east. With FARECOM assets now being hosted here, Bahren’s strategic importance to the Imperial Federation had just increased drastically as had its status as a potential target to enemies of the Imperial Federation.

Even though FARECOM had moved and its forces been appropriated to different commands, it was still responsible for its Regional Operations Area (ROA). The ROA for FARECOM included the continents and islands of Sondria’s Far East, a command area larger than any other in the CAF and manned by far less personnel than most of them. Supreme Commander Crogden, although recognizing the importance of the area, regarded the New World in general as not particularly worthy of much Crontorian attention. The stint in the Pearl Sea had been one of the last breaths of an empire that had grown to regard the New World as a symptom of imperial overreach.

But that had not stopped the deployment of the Crontorian 135th Combat Fleet to the Utaran Sea on what would be a routine patrol to meet up with elements of Western Command off the coast of Eagleland. But with news of the outbreak of war in Telrania, as the Ngati Onekawa Nukanoa made an offensive thrust into the little known nation of Paraksani, the 135th Fleet had been diverted to running active combat patrols northwest of the Baratan Peninsula. Their mission was not to get embroiled in combat, but to standby and observe the course of events. The Imperial Federation was incredibly curious as to how this action would be perceived by the powers in this region.

And there were a lot of unknown powers.

Basti Ramzān, Republic of Paraksani

Basti Ramzān is a busy coastal border city located in the Paraksani-Onekawa-Nukanoa border. A city of 342 thousand, it was part of a favoured route towards its southerly neighbour.

Maria Blanchett is one of the many residents in the city. She manages an international branch of the Royal Imperial Bank of Gristol-Serkonos, one of the Empire's largest banks. Her fiance is Demetrios Marinos, an Eaglelander national who works as a Plant Manager at one of the city's industrial factories. She goes to work every 0730, and ends at 1600 for five days and spends the weekends with her partner. She loved playing sports with her Paraksani friends and, along with her partner, are frequenters of the city's restaurant situated above the city tallest building. But aside from being a branch controller, she also held a second position, where her other identity works for. In fact, the identity Maria Blanchett, a Serkonosean from Santa Elva, is a cover for her real identity.

She is an sleeper agent for the IMI-6, the primary intelligence agency of the Sovereign Empire. She was assigned as group leader in Paraksani's southern borders. Along with five other agents, they send reports to her, who relays and encrypts the information to Fort Cortana, the headquarters of the agency.

Marie cuddled closer to her partner as they lay down on their shared bed, she woke up to a sound of explosions that rock the city as the Ngati Onekawa-Nukanoa mounted an offensive into the city. "Stazi." she cursed in her Serkonosean tongue as she jumped off her bed and dashed towards her computer. She read through the reports, all of them reporting a major offensive by the Ngati Onekawa-Nukanoa. She has been anticipating this for a while, and now it has happened she is stunned at the speed of the invasion.

Agent One: Major offensive in Ben Adin, will vacate to safehouse. Connection Check Up: Online, as of 3 minutes ago.
Agent Two: Heavy artillery shelling at al-Haji border crossing. Moving to safehouse. Connection Check Up: Online, as of 5 minutes ago.
Agent Three: Paraksani and Ngati Onekawa-Nukanoa armies clash at Tāra Haveli. Moving to safehouse. Last Connection Check Up: 20 minutes ago.
    Agent Four: No Status Report
    Agent Five: No Status Report
So it's happening. Marie thought, wondering about how the Empire is going to respond. But then she thought about Demetrios, who might be looking for her right now. She knew he wouldn't forgive her for keeping this information, but she has to have her complete trust if they are to escape the country. She then typed a report to Fort Cortana with an addendum stating that she is pulling all the agents out of Paraksani.

    Alert:// All Agents

Situation in Paraksani has deteriorated. Eagle has flown away.

Every agent must reach the territory of the Empire on their own.

Due to lack of orders, individual action is authorized.

"Maria, we need to go!" Demetrios walked into her office, pulling his coat on him. He saw her fiancee bent down looking at her computer. "Sweetheart, what-"

Maria stopped him, placing a finger at his lips as she wrapped her arms around him. "Maria, what's going on?" She was silent for a moment, gathering the right words. She spoke silently, whispering; "Deme, do you trust me?" she planted her forehead on his shoulder.
"O-of course I do." Demetrios wrapped his arms around her "But what's all this?" he glanced at the computer with the emblem of the IMI-6 on the screen. But then he realized that she has been hiding something from him.
"It's something I haven't told you, because the security of my country is at stake." she pulled herself from him and looked at him in the eyes. "But I will tell you everything once we reach Imperial territory."

Demetrios' face hardened for a moment, angered by all the developments that has happened. But he slowly understood what was going on as distant bombardment of artillery rock the city. Choosing to trust her, he kissed her in the lips which Maria gladly returned. The kiss was broken when an artillery barraged close their apartment building. "Let's go. Now."

He nodded.

Amalinbourg Palace, Rien-Stadt, I.D. (Imperial District)
The Sovereign Empire of Gristol-Serkonos
Region: Telraina (New World), Sondria

It was early in the noon when they received the intel.

As soon as the base received it, the Fort Cortana swarmed into action. Royal Operatives in Paraksani were given a choice to either continue their information gathering or escape into the Sovereign Empire. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the first one notified, who then informed the Imperial Government of the current situation growing in Paraksani.

Upon notifying the Royal Diarchy, the monarchs summoned the officials of the Rieshistagi to Amalinbourg Palace, the shared residence of the two monarchs and their immediate families. The Palace is located at the heart of the capital, two blocks from the Palace of the People, where the Rieshistagi is seated. Empress Annika I Felvaron and Emperor Lorei IV Esteria, monarchs of Gristol and Serkonos respectively, took their seats at the head of the round table. The rather heated discussion between the members of the Rieshistagi and the RGSDF soon died down as the two monarchs entered. Despite their positions of authority, the Diarchy is still the supreme authority in the Sovereign Empire.

With executive powers ranging from dissolving parliaments to dismissing officers in the military without parliamentary approval, showing disrespect to the Diarchy is certainly not an option.

The two monarchs stared at the members of the Imperial Government and the Military for a moment. The silence was soon broken by Empress Annika, who told the Lord of the Consei-Estadi and the Imperial Chief of Defence Staff to resume the summit. The two monarchs has often left most of the executive decision-making to the Royal Executive Council, made up of members of the Rieshistagi and advisers of the Royal Diarchy. As this is situation is of national importance, the Diarchy has chosen to involve themselves into the decision making.

It will be a long summit before any decision is made.

It is referred to in a variety of ways. From “passing through the gates of hell”, “seeing the elephant” or even “bloody initiation”. Many soldiers never have to experience a trial by combat. Not all of them are in the kind of roles that actually require them to lay down their lives. The work they did was far more likely than not still beneficial, but some men never got the opportunity to engage with an enemy in the greatest game of all. Call it war, conflict, armed aggression or any other number of names, it is still the same. Yet for something that involves so many, often millions, so few actually have to deal with the rigours and hardships that battle offers.

But some get to see enough to take the slack. The initial two hours of the offensive had progressed very smoothly, losses were at minimal levels while casualties inflicted were enormous. Although it would take some time after the conflict to run the numbers and make the assessments, it was estimated that as many twenty thousand people had become casualties by the effect of the artillery and air strikes alone. Most had likely been civilians, but then the Ngāti Tumatauenga had never been terribly concerned with such casualties. It never went out of its way to inflict such damages, but it never took particular precautions to minimize them. If people were in the way, they were in the way. It was as simple as that.

And people were in the way now. The entire offensive involved nearly two million combat troops, yet a surprisingly significant amount had fallen onto the two formations of Kaitiaki which had been deployed. With the initial neutralization of the border defences so the Taua could move in and properly tangle with the stunned Paraksani formations. Although the clashes were still so far not finished, the conclusion was practically already set in stone. The Taua had caved in Paraksani formations with minimal effort. The FV790, the primary tank of the Taua had torn the Paraksani T-series of tanks apart. Predominately composed of the T-72B, they had faced little chance. In all other areas of combat the Taua had also shown this level of overmatch. Anything the Taua touched, they destroyed.

The Kaitiaki were already at a point were they were encountering their first major targets. Several cities all across the border were to be captured quickly. They were major hubs for transport into and throughout Paraksani. As a result, their quick capture would enable the forces to proceed forward more smoothly by enabling logistics to be performed with less hassle, more quickly and more efficiently. Plus, if the major cities can be neutralised quickly, then its just a matter of time rather than an actual conest between the armed forces of two nations. The only issue was if someone else decided to get involved, but that seemed unlikely. The Kylarnatians seemed to engrossed in affairs overseas and lacked the capability in Sondria to be little more than a nuisance, whilst the Soverign Empire might be positively delighted with the removal of Paraksani as a border ulcer. And the United Empire had affairs to deal with in the Old World as it continues locking horns with the Triad.

Cities all across the border were taking fire in one form or another. Most of it was artillery as the Taua Ea was bsuing removal key structures. However, one of Taua Ea most critical job was to help in the entrapment and destruction of the Parakani 13th Army Group. Paraksani could not hope to match the manpower possessed by Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa, but it did field a relatively large army considering its national size. The annihilation of one of Paraksani most useful and capable strategic assets. At over 500,000 strong, itself could be affect the timetable planned for the operation if it had time to dig itself in. Not adversely, but enough to be an irritant.

That is why a several flights of FM.29A Pīwaiwaka had been tasked with the removal of several possible exits that the 13th Army Group might take so it can pull back and reinforce a different area. Although they could have been of some use to Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa, it had been decided that ensuring the total annihilation of the 13th was more useful than having some more access. A mix of bridges and railway tunnels that without which would cripple the movements of a large, mechanized force. From the initial zone, there was exactly 14 bridges and 5 railway tunnels that would impede its movement. You almost have to feel sorry for Paraksani. They never stood a chance.

As the neared their targets, there was some slight disruption by attempts of Paraksani to retaliate with their own aircraft. But before they could even get a target, the FM.29A's blew them from the sky with impunity. Not a single aircraft was lost to an opposing aircraft, and even attempts to defend themselves with ground-based systems was futile as commanders realized with horror that their primary form of aerial defence had been annihilated by the Kaitiaki. The targets were sent either into the water or made utterly uninsurable with little difficulty.

But whilst armies clashed, something else was happening. In Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa there was a secret. Not a particularly dark one, but a secret nonetheless. Deep within the Kaitiaki there was a small group of indivudals who had gone beyond been hand-selected. They were the elite within the elite within the elite, and no one was really aware of their existence. They didn't operate like normal soldiers, and the few rumours that discussed them were almost wholly disregarded as mere fairytale. Surely such actions could only be done by those who possessed some sort of power. No one would literally be able to become a shadow, surely?

Although often exaggerated, the Ngaro were different. They operated only under the words of the Māori Kīngi himself, and they always operated alone. They were essentially granted the authority of the Māori Kīngi and could command anyone to assist him. But to do so was extremely unlikely, it might make people believe in their existence, and they did better when no one even thought they were real.

One Ngaro had been sent to Paraksani to, in part, keep an eye on things. The other was to stalk a few agents of foreign origin. He didn't plan to kill them, he simply wanted to observe them before and make sure they made it out alive. The last thing Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa required was foreign agents being killed and placing it under suspicion. Odd, that agents working for the Soeverign Empire would have a Māori “Guardian Angel” of sorts.

As he looked over the burning remains of the edge of Basti Ramzān and several hundred people running for their lives, he began his vigil. He then jumped of the edge of a 22-story building.

Sondria, Telraina
City of Basti Ramzān

The city was burning.

The historic Christian bastion that served as the city's defence during the late middle ages was being decimated by artillery barrage as the armies of the Ngāti Onekawa-Nukanoa surged north. Panic soon filled the city's populace and its garrison soldiers as they frantically try and escape the rushing enemy. The motorway exits were the first to be struck during the first wave of airstrikes, severely hampering the Paraksani military's ability to maneuver its beleaguered armies on the country's southern front. With the city in chaos, the inhabitants quickly turned to petty thievery and began forming bands of militia to defend their homes. Foreign citizens in particular are still struggling to escape the warfare, as either the embassies and consulates are under lockdown or abandoned.

Gristol-Serkonos

With the city's airport currently being contested between the two armies, the remaining route for foreign citizens to escape is the country's eastern borders with the Sovereign Empire. With all military units in Paraksani ordered south to assist in the defence, the Imperial Border Guards in the Sovereign Empire are ordered all crossings from Paraksani be locked down. As all this were happening, the Rieshistagi ordered resources to be pooled for the rush of refugees that will arrive once they declared all borders to be open. The last thing the incumbent government needs is a humanitarian crisis, as the current administration is suffering an all-time low approval ratings between the cancellation of the VC (Victory over the Communists) Day celebrations in Rien-Stadt, the slow recovery from the recession of the economy in 2008, and the insurgency crisis in Valcea.

In a surprise announcement, Lord High Chancellor Petro Calroni resigned from the Chancellorship. With the Deputy Lord High Chancellor currently in power, he ordered the immediate security measures in the country's eastern border, mobilizing two Field Armies to the eastern borders between the Sovereign Empire and the Paraksani Republic. Reinforcing the borders and getting the Imperial Citizens from Paraksani were the two main priorities of the Deputy Lord High Chancellor. In an emergency meeting, he met with the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Director General of the Directorate of Military Intelligence.

He'll need everything they know about the situation before he would act.

Maria Blanchett (alias)
IMI-6 Agent in Charge of Delta Section

The smaller roads were the remaining path out of the city.

Sitting on the passenger seat with her laptop, Maria Blanchett browsed through the latest satellite imagery from Fort Cortana. Her fiance Demetrios was on the wheel, watching for traffic as the city descended into chaos. Mercifully, the area of the city where they resided has yet to be affected by the ongoing warfare. But as the conflict intensifies, it will not take long before they see troops from both sides clash in the district. A horn from a retreating Paraksani Army MRAP was the only warning they heard as it rammed Demetrios' side of the vehicle, sending it flying towards the curb.

Then it all went black.

Emerging from her unconsciousness, Maria realized their vehicle was upside down. Her laptop that was originally resting on her lap was outside the vehicle, broken and in two pieces. The seatbelt was keeping her on her seat, albeit hanging upside down. She was fortunate to have suffered minor injuries, apart from a concussion and scratches to her face. Reaching for the unlocking buckle, she pressed it and fell forward to the ground. Groaning in pain, she looked towards her fiance and was horrified to see his state. His pupils were dilated and sustained a number of fatal injuries including a broken neck. Murmuring her fiance's name, she gripped her collar and wept in agony for him. The onlookers began to open the door of the flipped vehicle, pulling a grieving Maria and her deceased fiance as the city, like the rest of the southern edges of the country, descend into chaos.
