Sadly, this actually happened in a military exercise not too long ago

justified by General Peter Pace as follows: "You kill me in the first day and I sit there for the next 13 days doing nothing, or you put me back to life and you get 13 more days' worth of experiment out of me. Which is a better way to do it?"

Granted, the 'goal' was to test the chain of command in the event of taking casualties, not how good command was supposed to prevent those casualties in the first place.

I've heard about that before, and I don't think that the small boat attack demonstrated the inherent incapability of a modern fleet to defend itself against small boats, just how communications difficulty resulted in the fleet not attempting to defend itself.
